Myth, Magic and Madness. 9th September - 30th October 2011 View Art Gallery www.viewgallery.co.uk Our next major exhibition is co-curated by Clare Ferguson-Walker. We first got excited by Clare’s work last year when she made the trip from Wales to show us her beautiful sculptures and we were riveted by the stories behind them. We were even more excited to discover Clare was part of a collective who had a strong connection with each other through their love of myth and magic, with a hint of madness. We were soon planning an exhibition. The best way to describe the theme of the exhibition is in Clare’s own words… Throughout history people have told and retold stories, and often through them have passed on covert insights into human nature via fantasy characters and scenarios. Over time a subtle language of metaphor and symbolism has been built up often uniting people of differing cultural backgrounds. We dream in metaphors, it is how our subconscious mind relates to the world, and perhaps when the barriers between the conscious and subconscious mind break down in waking hours and “normal” reality is experienced from a different perspective we can be called mad, yet some cultures would and do seek out these states, going into trances to retrieve information from the symbolic realm, which can be brought back and used to help the community. So perhaps the “mad” have something to share, to teach, and perhaps if we learn to decipher the clues we see in our dreams we can become more holistically ourselves. If we can influence the wider world by manipulating objects of symbolic significance, can we perform magic? Are we the creators of our own destiny if we believe we are? Perhaps truths hidden deep within old myths and fairytales can help to unlock our

Jim Moray Band at the Colston Hall Jim Moray is a 27 year old singer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer who has created startlingly contemporary recordings of England’s traditional songs which have been described as the most significant development in folk music in the last 30 years. Jim has gone from performing in local folk clubs to playing the main stage at Cambridge Folk Festival, Sidmouth Folk Festival, WOMAD and beyond. He has been featured in The Independent, Guardian, Mojo, The Telegraph, Uncut and The Times and reviewed in countless other publications here and abroad. He has performed radio sessions and been interviewed on BBC Radio 2, 3, 4 and 6Music and been featured on TV several times including on the landmark BBC4 Folk Britannia series. He has also had his music featured on the trailer for ITV’s drama Murder City. He has toured in the UK, Benelux, Australia and Canada. In February 2004 Jim received both the Horizon Award as best newcomer and the prestigious Album Of The Year Award for Sweet England at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. He has followed Sweet England with two further album ‘Jim Moray’ (2006) and ‘Low Culture’ (2008) which went on to win the fRoots Critics’ Poll Album of the Year Award, Mojo’s Folk Album of the Year and gain him three nominations in the BBC Folk Awards 2009. With support from Duotone Duotone is the name under which Barney Morse-Brown (cellist for The Imagined Village and Chris Wood’s Handmade Life) and James Garrett (London based singer-song writer and percussionist) write and perform their own contemporary acoustic songs. They loop guitars, cellos, percussion and voices to create ethereal soundscapes for their poignant lyrics to weave in and out. There is no escaping the fact that we live in stressful times – everyday worries about work, relationships and money have been compounded by the financial crisis and the subsequent recession. With people worried about losing their jobs and even their homes, figures for people suffering stress, anxiety and depression have soared. According to a 2010 study from academics at Roehampton University and the children’s charity Elizabeth Finn Care, incidents of depression jumped four-five fold, with 48% of people who had had a salary cut or reduction in hours suffering from anxiety. Yet this is only part of the picture and a reaction to a particular event. Mental health issues in general in the UK are far more widespread and cover a vast range of conditions – from bipolar disorder to stress and anxiety, from depression to schizophrenia. Thankfully, as more people, such as Stephen Fry, openly talk about problems they have had, mental health is moving more into the public domain. Yet there is still work to be done in moving beyond the taboo. One of the issues for many people diagnosed with mental health issues is whether or not to ‘medicate’ – some people are willing to accept pharmaceutical help, yet others are not happy to go down that route. So what are the alternatives? I am a massive advocate of exercise prescription for dealing with certain mental health issues, most notable stress, anxiety and depression. It is not a new theory, however it is only in the last 15 or so years that rigorous scientific testing has shown a link between exercise and the reduction of these conditions. In 1999, Professor Daniel Landers at Arizona State University released his paper ‘The Influence of Exercise on Mental Health’, which concluded that: “We now have evidence to support the claim that exercise is related to positive mental health as indicated by relief in symptoms of depression and anxiety.” Interestingly, the study discovered that different types of exercise were responsible for relieving those symptoms, citing that vigorous exercise was better for depression, while more steady work was better for anxiety. The one thing that applied to both was that exercise needed to be taken several times a week. Since Landers’ study there has been a growing number of scientific studies that have come to similar conclusions and it is quite normal to see articles in the press talking about the benefits of exercise on our mental as well as our physical health. In my time as a personal trainer I have seen how people have increased their self-esteem and become more confident. But one person I know stands out as a shining example of how exercise can help with mental health. Sian Fletcher was 21 years old when she was diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease – a benign tumour on the pituitary gland. After having had a successful operation to

remove the tumour, she found herself sinking further and further into depression which was eventually diagnosed as post-traumatic stress. “Basically I couldn’t handle the fact that I had had a brain tumour,” Sian explains. “Week after week I was having more trouble getting out of bed, was sleeping loads and felt like there was this big, black cloud hanging over me. I keep hoping that I would fall asleep and not wake up.” Prior to the tumour, Sian had regularly been training at the gym and as a kickboxer. Around the time of the operation, this had tailed off, but she decided that she had to break the depressive cycle and signed up with a local personal trainer. “It gave me a responsibility. If I didn’t go to the gym I would not only be letting myself down but my trainer as well. In the early days, coming to the gym was the only thing that would get me out of the house. It lifted me up and gave me a buzz and helped me feel good about myself.” So much so, that Sian has now become a personal trainer herself so that she can hopefully make people feel better about themselves as well. However, there is a cautionary tale to be had here. Exercise is not necessarily a ‘magic bullet’ when it comes to mental health. While there are many people who will testify to how it has helped them, it won’t eradicate the underlying causes. As Sian explains: “I am still taking my medication and I don’t believe exercise will get me off that, but it gives you a purpose and a sense of achievement. There are still times when I have dark moments, but exercise lifts me out of that.” As a personal trainer, and as someone who has personally suffered from depression and anxiety in the past, I have personal experience of the benefits of exercise on how much better I felt. It is possibly the hardest thing for someone who is depressed to go to a gym or speak to a personal trainer, and someone who is stressed or anxious might not even consider appropriate exercise as a solution. But if this is you, then I would urge you to think of taking up exercise – whether that is simply getting out and walking for 30 minutes a day, taking up swimming or joining a gym. It can help make your life so much better.

Working at UWE? : UWE is out + proud as an inclusive employer

Have you thought about working for the University of West of England? Many people told us that ‘I am not academic so I don’t think there is anything for me at UWE’. However, there are approximately 3,800 staff working at UWE and we offer a huge range of posts from teaching and research to professional, administrative and technical roles including manual and casual roles. Our HR policies are fully inclusive of LGBT staff and LGBT staff are entitled to the same benefits regardless of their sexual orienation or gender identity. At UWE, there are several gay or lesbian staff in same-sex relationships who have recently taken co-parent or adoption leave when their families have been blessed with arrivals of new members. As homophobia and heterosexism exist in the wider society and the University isn’t a separate entity detached from it, there is still some work to be done to ensure that LGBT staff can achieve their potential. UWE has signed up as a Stonewall Diversity Champion and has been working with Stonewall in creating more LGBT inclusive workplace. Our LGBT action plan has been developed to make this happen. A key to these initiatives is a contribution from our active LGBT staff network. The UWE LGBT Staff Network provide a valuable opportunity for networking and mutual support and contributes to promoting LGBT equality on campus. It is a self-organised group run by LGBT staff for LGBT staff and its membership is confidential. The University supports staff networks and all staff are entitled to attend staff network meetings up to 15 hours in their work time. Lisa Baxter, Student Advisor, says “I’ve found the University a supportive environment and would say the biggest challenge working at UWE is its size which presents both opportunities and challenges! The size of the staff group inevitably means that there are many other LGBT members working here who I’ve been able to meet with as part of the LGBT Staff Network but the number of staff has also meant that coming out is an ongoing task!
