Feature: We Are: Proud There have been lots of questions about Pride events in Bristol and Daryn has been kind to take time out of his insane shedule of planning our cities great free Pride event to answer the two biggest questions Out Bristol readers had. After Daryn’s answers comes two statements from the Police regarding the English Defence League event. We would like as many people to come support the We Are: Proud event as a celebration of Bristol’s diversity and not to mention a bloody good time :-) Why College Green? College Green was chosen as the home for this year’s Pride Festival as a more accessible site and, with a lot of hard work and creative thinking, has allowed a free and unfenced event that means that Pride is open and welcoming to everyone. Pride gets no funding and is run by volunteers. In a year that has seen several Pride’s across the UK, other major events in Bristol cancelled and the Olympics taking the majority of the corporate sponsorship it’s been hard work but Bristol Pride is something special and with great financial or in-kind support from local and national firms we have managed to make a fantastic event with over 50 acts performing, over 40 organisations and champions present in the largest community area yet and fantastic Family area with giant play toys and entertainment. Having a fantastic, large and visible pride draws thousands of people to the city and supports the whole gay scene. Throughout Pride Day and into Pride Night we are expecting in excess of 20000 people who will come to celebrate, engage and enjoy the fantastic entertainment lined up across 2 full stages of live music and a further 3 performance areas home to workshops, dance, performance and art as well as the wonderful evening events across Old Market and special Pride Night street fiesta. It would have been a great shame to not have a Pride in Bristol this year. We thanks the 100’s of people that have been involved in planning events over the last 6 months and giving up their time, for free, to make Pride happen. What’s going on with the EDL? Pride have been liaising with the Police and The Council with regards to the EDL for several weeks. The EDL stands for English Defense League and ‘peacefully protest against Islamic extremism in the UK’ whilst we do not condone their racist and bigoted views they have continually expressed that they are not a homophobic organisation and that LGBT people have nothing to fear from them. Ideally the EDL would not march in Bristol, which is a city that thrives on it’s diverse communities who all work together, but banning them would only make matters worse and legally would also mean banning the Pride march.

The EDL have very little support here in Bristol an area with one of their lowest membership rates - their numbers will be small and their march lasting little over an hour. The Police have moved the EDL to the other side of the city center, moved their location and start time and will be flanking and escorting them throughout the whole period they are in Bristol. The EDL march goes nowhere, nor will they be allowed to come near, Pride is a whole day of celebration and is a safe space for you to be proud of who you are and to come and support equality. Pride is a celebration but also a statement against prejudice of any kind and a chance for people to make a stand for equality, diversity and acceptance for all. The EDL presence in Bristol has actually served to bring Bristol communities closer together, united together at Pride, and in response we are proud to be working with groups in the city including from the muslim community to bring you a screening of “A Jihad for Love (details coming soon). Thank you Daryn again for taking the time out to answer the communities concerns. Pride Programmes can be picked up in the Pride Shop but we have also placed the full programme in the back of this issues Whats On Section.

Keeping You Informed

EDL Information for city centre businesses On Saturday July 14 the English Defence League will be holding a demonstration in Bristol. The event is confined to Queen Square and the roads in the immediate area and should not impact on tourist destinations or the central shopping areas of Cabot Circus, the Galleries and Broadmead. The protest will take place in a small geographic area and the police, city council and other partners are working hard to encourage protestors to stay at that location. Coaches carrying protestors from outside the city will drop them off and collect them from the protest location. Those people arriving by train will be escorted between the station and protest. In recent weeks police officers have been liaising with the protest organisers to remind them of their responsibilities to ensure their event is a safe and peaceful one. There will be an increased police presence in the Queen Square area on the day to deal with the march and a significant counter-protest which is expected from groups who oppose EDL. This will ensure any violence or disorder is dealt with quickly and robustly. Information leaflets will be circulated to businesses and residents along the march route. Work is also being done to let people know that Bristol is open for ‘business as usual’ and that there is no need for those people who live in, work in or visit the city to stay away. You can stay up-to-date on the day by following us on Twitter @ASPoliceLive or visiting our website at www.avonandsomerset.police.uk If you have any concerns about the march you can speak to your neighbourhood policing team by calling 101.

Keeping You Informed

EDL March Information for communities On Saturday July 14 the English Defence League will be holding a demonstration in Bristol. There will be a short march and demonstration which will be confined to Queen Square and the roads in the immediate area. When the EDL gather in towns or cities in this way, counter-protests also often spring up in response, often under a Unite Against Fascism [UAF] banner. There have sometimes been clashes between EDL and UAF groups (and fringe elements also present) in other parts of the country on such occasions. Various groups and individuals involved in protest or counter-protest will seek to encourage the local community to get involved in the protests. The police will act quickly and robustly to ensure any disorder, violence or crime is dealt with and the offenders brought to justice. Avon and Somerset Police have been liaising with the event organisers to remind them of their responsibility to ensure the event is a safe and peaceful one. The police do not regulate or organise protests but do work with organisers to facilitate them. In extreme circumstances processions can be banned but this does not include static protests. Experience shows it is better to work with organisers to facilitate the march rather than deal with the consequences of an unregulated event. A large police operation is being planned to minimise the disruption caused by the march and a significant counter-protest which is expected. Public safety is our priority and there will be an increased police presence in the area of the march and in communities who may feel particularly threatened by the demonstration. While everyone has the right to peaceful, lawful protest anyone who becomes involved in violence or disorder will be dealt with quickly and robustly. Community leaders are advised to remind people of the risk that some people will seek to exploit faith communities for their own means and that violence plays into the hands of extremists. The protest itself will take place in a small geographic area and the police, city council and other partners are working hard to encourage protestors to stay at that location. People should not be afraid to go to work, shopping or socialising in Bristol as the disruption will be minimal. Anyone who has concerns about this event should contact their neighbourhood policing team on 101.

Lifestyle: Gay Wedding Show

BRISTOL is to host its first-ever gay wedding show this summer. Organisers hope scores of gay couples will find everything they need for their civil partnership when they walk through the doors of The Council House in College Green on Sunday July 8. “We guarantee that everyone you meet on the day will be gay-friendly,” said Lisa Cullender who has organised the event with her assistant Kath Pratt. “This is about making sure gay couples are exposed to the very best wedding suppliers in the Bristol area.” Last year Lisa, who owns Add2Attract, launched Pink Partnerships, a new business aimed solely at gay couples choosing their engagement and wedding rings. “We did not just want to add the words ‘civil partnership’ to our existing advertising material,” she said. “We wanted our gay customers to know that we would go out of our way to make them feel welcome.” They launched the business at Bristol Pride, which was attended by 20,000 people. “We’d never had such a fun day at work,” said Lisa. “The reception we received at Pride was amazing. “People were shaking our hands and thanking us for making this kind of service available to them.” The reaction, though, prompted Lisa and Kath to dig a little deeper. “From our research we were horrified to learn that many gay couples had experienced prejudice in the run-up to their special day,” said Lisa. “As far as we are concerned planning a wedding should be a wonderful and enjoyable experience, regardless of sexuality.” Lisa said Add2Attract had been attending traditional wedding fayres for about 15 years. “We know from our research that most gay couples don’t feel comfortable attending these shows,” she said. “In fact, I think we have only ever met four gay couples.” For more information on the event and to purchase discounted tickets please visit www.pinkpartnerships.co.uk.

Summer Salon Exhibition Runs: 5th Jul - 2nd Sep 2012 www.viewgallery.co.uk During the Summer months of July and August, rather than lazing in the sun, we’ll be upping the pace at View with a rotating exhibition full of energy and surprise. We’ll be introducing many new artists, dabbling again in the international art market, and holding some very special events. Most significantly, we’ll be introducing new work in this changing exhibition every week. The theme will be the usual combination of high impact, emotionally driven art, with superb technical skills in a variety of style and medium. The difference will be the dynamic nature of the curating, such that it will be impossible to spend the usual hours deliberating over the visual distance between a particular painting and adjacent sculpture from a certain angle (yes, we are that ridiculous!). So, we’ll enjoy a more free and ‘off-piste’ style to setting up a show, which will give us huge scope for experimentation. We don’t expect to get it right all the time and we won’t be surprised to see a few eye-brows raised. I’m particularly looking forward to First Impressions, the student art show, that will be making its debut during the Summer Salon. We hope to have a few events supporting education, charity, and other forms of creative expression. We’ll be keeping everyone informed of the new work being introduced by the usual communication methods. As ever, feedback welcome (of any sort). Some of the artists featuring in Summer Salon are: James Tebbutt, Amelia Cirello, Jon Bently, Nigel Oddy, Rowdy, and Stephen Lovatt. Plus we’ll be showing new work from some of our regular exhibitors such as Beth Carter, Fran Williams, Paresh Nrshinga, and Adele Underwood.

Community: Chris Morgan Chris Morgan, the current Gay Games Powerlifting champion has this weekend won his fifth world championship title. He was lifting in the World Deadlift Championships held in Autun in France where he made lifts of 202.5 kilo’s followed by 220 kilo’s and then 240 kilo’s to win the World Open title in the 82.5 kilo class. Speaking about the competition, Chris Said, ‘I’m delighted to have won my fifth world championship title here in France this weekend. This is the first time in my fourteen year career that I’ve held British Open, European Open, World Open and Gay Games titles all at the same time.’ ‘This special moment seems ironic considering that only two weeks ago I almost decided not to compete at all due to a series of injuries’. Chris Continued ... ‘It was only when viewing an old photograph of the opening ceremony of the London Olympics 1948 that I changed my mind. The photograph carried the words that sometimes the important thing in the Olympic Games is not the winning, but the taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering, but fighting well’ ‘This year we all have an amazing opportunity to participate in sports in some way through the Olympic experience’s that are happening around us. Even if you are not competing in the Olympic games, or have tickets as a spectator this summer there is in fact a way which you can contribute to an equal fairer sports community for all of us’. ‘I’d like to remind you about The UK Governments Charter For Action to tackle homophobia and transphobia in Sports and if you are still to sign up to the charter in this Olympic year then please visit the facebook page http://www.facebook/ lgbtsportscharter and/or send a message of support to sportscharter@geo.gsi. gov.uk Contact Details Website: www.chunkymuscle.com

No father, no food and an unknown future This is a guest article by my friend and colleague David Heap who is currently based in Tulkarm. It was originally published on the EAPPI website. For the Abu Ihab family, Friday wasn’t too bad. Admittedly there were Israeli soldiers on their roof firing tear gas, they couldn’t leave the house, the sons had been chased down the stairs by armed soldiers and the stink of tear gas and burning car tyres drifted through the room. But Isra’a, the youngest daughter, said they weren’t really afraid today. Kafr Qaddum is a pleasant Palestinian hillside village of some four thousand people. It has a mayor, a mosque, an elementary school. It had a road joining it to the next village one and a half kilometres away – but not anymore. Between the two villages are two Israeli settlements, legal under Israeli law, but illegal according to UN Resolutions, which expressly forbid the civilian settlement of lands occupied as a result of conflict. The road was closed for security reasons by the Israeli authorities in 2003. The only security problems the townspeople were aware of were some damage to their crops and olive trees in the early days of the settlement, but all had been peaceful for a good while. Israeli authorities had reportedly promised to re-open the road at the same time as the main road beyond it to Nablus re-opened. This happened two years ago, but their road remained closed. Since the first of July 2011 the people of Kafr Qaddum have held a demonstration every Friday against the closure, which means a 20 kilometre detour to get to families and friends and a six-fold increase in bus fares for students. It can get very angry, as it had on the 15th of June this year, because the Israeli army had raided the village in the middle of the night before and detained 20 young men. They can be held in administrative detention inside Israel, many kilometres away from their families for hours, days, weeks, months or years, often without trial. If they admit to the claims against them (often stone-throwing) they can be released upon payment of a fine that is around 10,000 shekels (€2000.) A Palestinian going to work in Israel as a labourer or farmhand earns 120-180 shekels per day. That Friday, it was a game of kids advancing and throwing stones, soldiers dashing forward threateningly with the guns, kids running back, soldiers withdrawing, kids advancing again went on till the main adult procession came up the hill. Tyres had been set alight and were now billowing smoke. The same pattern of ebb and flow was repeated, only now tear gas was being lobbed regularly. Mostly into a field to the side of the demo, but some skittering along the road into the crowd. Men were regularly brought back choking and temporarily blinded and a

Politics: Commentary Red Crescent ambulance zoomed up and down giving aid to the worst affected. One man was hurt more seriously as it seemed his shirt had caught fire and he was burned. Things quietened down after an hour or so and the procession came back chanting slogans. A quiet enough day we were told. Unlike the previous week there had been no chemically-created “Skunk water shot from water cannons and no sound bombs, which disorientate and nauseate as well as deafen. Back in the Abu Ihab house, which is at the outer limit of the village and always caught up in the midst of things, things were now quite calm. The soldiers had left the roof and for once had not cut the television cable. The mother was preparing a huge and delicious meal of chicken, rice, vegetables, pickles, pitta bread, tea and coffee.

Politics: Stonewall Homophobic bullying ‘a daily nightmare’ for over half of Britain’s gay school pupils Pioneering research reveals serious concerns about homophobic language Nearly a quarter of gay young people attempt suicide New research carried out by the University of Cambridge forStonewall’s School Report 2012 has found that 55 per cent of lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils in Britain’s secondary schools experience homophobic bullying. The research, based on a national survey of 1,614 young people, also found that nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of gay young people have attempted to take their own life, and more than half (56 per cent) deliberately harm themselves. The School Report 2012 reveals that 99 per cent of gay young people hear homophobic language – like ‘that’s so gay’ and ‘you’re so gay’. However, a quarter of gay young people – rising to over a third in faith schools – report that teachers never challenge homophobic language. In schools where teaching staff never challenge homophobic remarks, the rate of homophobic bullying is far higher than in schools where such language is always challenged (71 per cent compared to 43 per cent). Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill said: ‘It’s unacceptable that over half of gay young people face a daily nightmare of homophobic bullying, and deeply worrying that many schools and teachers still fail to challenge it effectively. Thankfully Stonewall’s years of work with thousands of schools and local authorities has reduced the overall level of homophobic bullying significantly. But we won’t rest until every single gay young person in this country can walk through their school gates every morning without fear of being bullied just because of the way they were born.’ Schools Minister Nick Gibb said: ‘Homophobic bullying, of any kind and of any child, is completely unacceptable. No child should have to suffer fear, victimisation or disruption as a result of bullying, either on or off school premises. Tackling poor behaviour and bullying are top priorities for the Coalition Government. Working with Stonewall and other groups, we are supporting schools to take a zero tolerance approach to all forms of bullying. We are also clear that homophobic language should become as unacceptable as racial slurs.’ Shadow Education Secretary StephenTwigg, speaking at Stonewall’s Education for All Conference in London today, paid tribute to Stonewall for making a ‘vital contribution’ to discussions about homophobic bullying. ‘Every school and college must be a safe environment for everyone learning and working there,’ he said. ‘Stonewall’sSchool Report sets out challenges for schools, the Department for Education and Ofsted. It also makes recommendations for local authorities and academy chains - it’s vital that these are adopted.’ Today’s report updatesStonewall’s 2007 School Report, which found that nearly two thirds of young people were beinghomophobically bullied. Homophobic language remains as prevalent today as it was in 2007, although twice as many young people today report their schools say homophobic bullying is wrong (50 per cent, up from 25 per cent in 2007). www.stonewall.org.uk/schoolreport2012.

The Bristol Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Forum (LGBT Bristol) is looking for new Management Committee members. We are looking for people with a passion for and committment to LGBT rights, willing to put their skills, creativity, intelligence, flair and confidence to work. Help us continue to challenge homophobia and make Bristol a City that welcomes LGBT people. You would be working with other Management Committtee members and staff to serve our Membership and LGBT communities in the City. In the 18 years since the Forum came into existence, and 8 years after it became an independent Charity, there is still much left to do to consolidate the rights of LGBT people. The local PCT, Constabulary, Fire Service and other major service providers regularly consult us on a wide range of issues and our influence gives a voice to LGBT people within both, the Equalities Team and other departments of Bristol City Council. One of the major outcomes of our work has been the Authority’s rapid advancement in the Stonewall Workplace Equality List (41st) and, following three years’ lobbying by us and other LGBT groups, it has joined the Stonewall Education Champions Programme, following intense lobbying by the Forum on action against homophobic bullying in Bristol schools. Our current projects include developing anti-bullying policy and practice in primary education and promoting universal inclusion of trangender, as well as older and disabled LGBT people. We have funding for 20012/13 and will be submitting our bid for the following 3 years, in July, but we are committed to developing new strategies to help us remain financially viable in the changing landscape of Charity funding and at this difficult time of cuts and austerity. We are asking members of the LGBT community to join us and leave their legacy in our brilliant, vibrant City, and help put it on the map as an LGBT destination of international calibre. For more information about LGBT Bristol and how to join please visit http://lgbtbristol.org.uk/join/

WE ARE : PROUD

WELCOME

WELCOME TO PRIDE 2012 — WE ARE : PROUD WE ARE: PROUD is a vibrant celebration of the lives and talents of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) people. It promotes equality, for all, and spreads a positive message of acceptance in the biggest Pride festival across the whole South West. We invite everyone who values equality and diversity to join us. It’s been a tough year to make Pride happen; arts and cultural events across the country are feeling the squeeze but support for We Are: Proud has been overwhelming. Support from partners, celebrities, venues, individual donors and some creative thinking has helped make Pride happen. There is a real demand for Pride with hundreds of people coming forward to help make pride happen and be a part of the hottest ticket in town. We’re often asked ‘Is Pride still needed?’ Whilst it’s true that there have been huge strides towards equality we still see reports of homophobia and bullying in everyday life, schools, workplaces and social institutions which continue to marginalise LGBT people. For people who are out and proud, it’s still common to find ourselves in situations where we have to hide who we really are with colleagues at work or with families & friends. No-one should have cause to feel ashamed of who they are, or make tough decisions about being open about sexuality knowing it could have serious consequences to their relationships with families, friends or their jobs. So, Pride is the chance to celebrate, educate and engage with everyone, show that you are not alone and can feel proud.

2

Pride Day is free but costs thousands of pounds to organise. Please support the event and keep Pride a free, open event by making a donation. If everyone donated just £4 (a lot less than a cinema ticket) this would help towards covering the costs of the event. If you like what you see today then please feel free to donate more to help secure the future of Pride and the work of We Are: in Bristol. Why not get a Pride Supporter Wristband, offering free entry into evening events including the fantastic Pride takeover of the O2, discounts at the bars, food and market stalls on Pride Day. Most importantly you’re helping make Pride happen. We Are: is an organisation that works all year round with highly visible, engaging events that promote equality & acceptance, giving a voice and presence to those who might feel hidden or ignored and showcasing vibrant and talented communities. Equality and diversity are a gift and We Are: Proud is a chance for LGBT people, their friends, families and the whole of the South West to stand up and declare that they are proud of who they are and their loved ones. We cannot wait to welcome the thousands of people who join our celebrations across Pride Week including the South West’s largest, most colourful parade and the most visible Pride festival Bristol has ever seen. However you celebrate......

BE PROUD! Daryn J Carter

We would like to thank all our Partners & Supporters. These proud partners provide significant in-kind or financial support to the festival. WE ARE : PROUD

WE ARE : PROUD SUPPORTERS STEPHEN FRY Sending all my love and support to Bristol Pride this year. Sorry I can’t be there but I’m sure it will be a fantastic event. Sometimes it can seem that for every step forward the LGBT community makes in terms of acceptance and equality, we are sent two steps back by the forces of bigotry and intolerance. We only have to look around the world to see how the twin evils of nationalism and distorted religion have focused on LGBT people as the target for their hate, just as the Jews were singled out in the 20s and 30s. If that sounds hysterical and exaggerated - remember the words of Edward Burke, that “for evil to flourish all that is required is for good men to do nothing”. Open pride, sane insistent debate and a refusal to accept a culture of bullying, taunting and hatred are as necessary now as they have ever been.

CATHERINE JOHNSON There’s a significant line in ‘Mamma Mia!’ - “There are all kinds of families” - says Harry, a gay man to Donna, a single mother. He’s telling her to be true to herself, to celebrate her own worth and most importantly, not to feel judged by other people. That’s the message of Bristol Pride and I am 100% behind their campaign for LGBT youth. Be happy!

MATT LUCAS As a former student who remembers going to Bristol Pride at the Watershed and watching Labi Siffre in 1995, I am delighted to know that the Pride event is still going strong, and I’m very happy to support it. I think I’ve still got that free condom somewhere, actually.

SURAN DICKSON Each and every one of us have the potential to be role models; simply by being respectful and considerate members of society who happen to be LGBT. By quietly acknowledging you have a same sex partner to the dry cleaner, hair dresser or anyone else you may encounter, you are educating society and therefore making a difference for those who come after you. A role model doesn’t need to successful, good looking or rich - a role model is simply someone who communicates to LGBT young people that sexuality or gender identity are NOT a barrier to happiness and fulfilment

GRAHAM NORTON I hope that everyone coming to Bristol Pride have a great day and an out and proud year

FILM TUESDAY 10 JULY

WERE THE WORLD MINE WE ARE: AND SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL, STRANGE BEDFELLOWS? PRESENT A NIGHT WITH THE BARD VENUE : CREATIVE COMMON TIME : 7:30 pm | PRICE : £6 (No one turned away for insufficient funds) Creative Common is a brand new space in the heart of Bristol, located next to Temple Meads Station this exciting big top will be home to the fairy kingdom…Do I entice you? Working with the Bristol Shakespeare festival who are passionate about bringing the freshest, most exciting productions of Shakespeare’s plays to Bristol we are proud to present a very special pop up performance followed by the award winning reworking of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Were The World Mine. If you had a love-potion, who would you make fall madly in love with you? Timothy is openly gay, which doesn’t make him popular with his fellow classmates. His eccentric teacher casts him as Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and he discovers a secret recipe hidden in the script. Playfully he creates a new reality by turning much of his narrow-minded town gay, beginning with the rugby-jock of his dreams….but the course of true love never did run smooth. This event is supported by BYlaw, the social and networking group for gay professionals in the legal sector. We thank them for their continued support.

Performance will be followed by a screening of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH Directed and staring John Cameron Mitchell (who brought us Shortbus),this outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious adaptation of the hit musical tells the story of Hedwig, born a boy named Hansel in East Berlin, who fell in love with an American G.I. and underwent a sex-change operation in order to marry him and flee to the West. One of our all time favourites we are proud showcase this heart-warming, emotional roller coaster, with the magic of the silver screen and wonderful performances from BID.
