Feature:Photography by Gaz Gaz has been a prominent portrait photographer in London since 2004, and has just had published his first collection of striking male imagery entitled ‘Fight Club’. His passion for photography has introduced him to an eclectic array of clients from the worlds of art, fashion, stage and screen, his work being featured world wide in magazines, online and on TV, but it is his characteristic work with the male physique that has caught the most attension and been used in advertising from underware campaigns to the Terrence Higgins Trust’s health promos. We had the pleasure of interviewing Gaz about his book inspires him, what makes him tick and what to create such fantasic work. but first... What makes a man a real man? With ‘Fight Club’, Gaz proves that this question does not worry him at all his models are doubtlessly everything a man wants to be. They have muscled bodies and they stare at you. Drops of sweat, special light contrasts and the language of the bodies, which doesn’t speak of compromise these are the significant attributes of the art of Gaz. His hunks are incredibly impressive and it takes a man with guts to withstand eye contact with them. If you want to face them, be alerted as if you are about to taming a tiger: Be respectful but decisive; be focused, for these animals could attack you and tear you apart, if you do not watch them carefully. Gaz is a true master of his business; you can clearly recognize that he was influenced by movies with a dark picture language such as David Fincher’s ‘Fight Club’, which also inspired the book’s title, as well as films like ‘300’ and Film Noir. With FIGHT CLUB he has created a first class photo book, athletic, rough and hunkylicious … ...let the fight begin!

Feature:Photography by Gaz When did you first get interested in photography ? Actually I always played with my parents film cameras when on holiday as a child and was fascinated to see how the photos came out getting them back from the processors a week after posting them off (God I sound so old! LOL) but it wasn’t till one of my Art teachers at school lent me her SLR that I really got bitten by the bug. I still didn’t follow it as a career choice though as I was trained as an illustrator and designer. It was only when I worked as a junior in a design studio that I learnt studio photography assisting the photographer on advertising shoots that I really saw it as a possible career. Do you think a formal education is important? I would say it’s important. I learnt ‘hands on’ which for me was the best way but the contacts and connections to industry that a lot of Uni courses have, really can help get a foot in the door in the real world. Where do you get your inspiration? Ooh tough one. I get inspired by the individual I’m shooting firstly, the direction it needs to go (as far as a commercial or editorial story) but also I study light and shade and how that creates mood and atmosphere. I’m creatively inspired by Cinema and Art and the art training I had was invaluable. What makes one image stand out from the rest? That I can’t say, it’s a gut thing, instinct. Any one who’s shot with me will know I have a habit of expressing myself during a shoot so when it’s really working I’m usually making a lot of noise! LOL So much of the photography of men today is the more feminised metrosexual image where as your work focuses more on the masculinity in a man was this a conscious choice or more an organic one? For me personally I like all types. People fascinate me, faces, bodies, character all do it for me. I do a lot of fashion shots that have to be on the nail as far as right model right time and currently the trend is for the metrosexual look but fashion changes and so do the fashion models. I do shoot a lot of physique models... strong moody lighting can really show power and definition without it looking like a body building competition shoot but they have to have something extra for me beyond just the body.

07

Feature:Photography by Gaz How do you come up with concepts for campaigns? I worked for a long while as an art director and you really learn how to work with a client to create for their market. That can be a particular style or age group, demographic etc all kinds of things. What has been your biggest challenge photographically speaking to date? I actually love a challenge, shot in some odd locations - on one roof top shoot I broke my finger falling down the fire escape but still carried on shooting. LOL What excites you most about photography? Every day is different for me... can be shooting a Actor for an editorial one day, the next a campaign for THT and the next a personal portrait for an internet profile... love it all big and small... I always enjoy meeting people and I have great fun on my shoots, and I tend to stay friends with a lot of the clients and models I shoot. Do you think its important to work on personal projects as well as commercial ones ? yes always... I do a lot of test shoots for new models and come up with different ideas for our portfolios. My first book that’s just been published called ‘Fight Club’ (published by Bruno Gmuender) was originally a concept to do some gritty, non pretty shots with 3 stunning fashion models using body paint (I’m a member of the British Body Painting Association) and very moody lighting and it ended up as my signature style. What project or person would you most like to work with? I’d like to do a lot more creative celebrity portraits for magazines and the actor Tom Hardy would be top of my list (woof!).

Rome, Italy

Rome the eternal city, the home of some of Europe’s most beautiful site’s from Art, Culture, History, Religion and entertainment. This city has it all. 2011 is no exception to this but it has an added attraction as 2011 Rome is the base for Europride (www.europride.com). One main point to remember when in Italy most venues require you to be a member of Arcigay to enter (www.arcigay.it). As Rome is one of busiest cities in Europe and as such accommodation can be booked up fast. In the summer, the city can get very hot and when site seeing make sure you take comfortable shoes to wear as you will need them, also make sure you dress appropriately when sightseeing as this is a Catholic country and you may not be let in to places when too much flesh is on show. Have a great time..... What not to miss The Forum, warning to all, this is a HUGE site so a map is advised to gain the most from your visit . The Borghese Gardens, home to main museums, fountains, temples and a lake which can be a great break from the heat in the summer. The Castel sant’ Angelo, One of Rome’s finest sights a must see for any tourist to the city. Palatine Hill, The Colosseum & The Spanish steps. He has spent the last 16years working with businesses large and small to tranistion change through leadership and people development to deliver outstanding business performance. How to win your dream job Written by As a HR & Training consultancy firm we’ve been involved in a number of recruitment and assessment centres projects to select the best leaders and professionals for both large and medium firms. Over the next couple of months we’ll share some considerations which we hope will increase your chances of winning your dream job through a series of short articles. What is your dream job? Always begin with the end in mind! Before you search for your next job it’s always worth writing down your own job description for your dream job that balances with your future career aspirations and lifestyle. Think about things that are truly important to you including minimum and maximum salary, location, the types of industries as well as the type of people you would develop and flourish around. Think about your lifestyle and personal circumstances too so that you are clear on how your dream role would support these. Take some time to then step back and write down a list of your qualifications, experience and personal strengths. Now evaluate - is your dream role achievable? If you were recruiting someone for your dream role would you recruit you? This should help you to create some flexibility or make some reasonable adjustments and provide some valuable insight into where you need new skills or experience before you make the next move. Now you have clarity and a realistic picture of the type of dream job you truly want you can then start to search for your dream job and develop areas you need to improve your chances. Over the next few months this section will develop with columists who are leaders in their fields to enable our readers to gain valuable insight.

Lifestyle: Fashion Fashion, love it, hate or don’t get it. This modern art form dominates our modern world. Over the coming months our team of fashion writers will take you on a journey through this world which contributes nearly £21bn to the UK economy (BFC-Value of Fashion report) I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of Bristol’s hottest new independent boutique, Garment Quarter and let me tell you, it’s not often I fall in love with a store so quickly.

Written by Brad Palmer

After being greeted by Managing Director John Reid, myself and Dan from Last Style of Defense enjoyed champagne, sushi and some heavenly chocolates whilst taking in all that the boutique has to offer. One thing that I can safely declare is that Garment Quarter has one of the best product ranges in the city and with a fantastic mix of established designers amongst up and coming talent it’s safe to say this will be one store I will definitely be returning to.

Myself, designer Ashley Marc Houvelle (modeling a Tee from his own collection- separate post to follow) and Dan.

Garment Quarter 25 Penn Street Bristol BS1 3AU 01173 294405 garmentquarter.com Opening Times Mon- Wed 10am - 7pm Thurs 10am - 8pm Fri 10am - 7pm Sat 10am - 7pm Sun 11am - 5pm

Lifestyle: Fashion As I continually told many of the staff during the evening, I really did LOVE the store. And with brands including Vivienne Westwood Gold and Red Label, Markus Lupfer, Comme Des Garcons Play and Unconditional (many of which are a first for Bristol) what’s not to love? After not a lot of convincing from Dan and a lovely store assistant / Henry Holland look-alike, I made the executive decision to try on this gorgeous cape from Vivienne Westwood Red Label. It may be from the Women’s collection but once on it was surprisingly easy to pass off. Androgynous, but never the less it was added to the already seemingly endless mental shopping list I was swiftly creating in my head. I fell in love with these boots from the moment I saw them and at a very reasonable £185 I know where my next pay check will be going.

Check out what else Brad has to say and what else he has been up to at fashionyouthindulgence.blogspot.com.

Anyone who knows me will be fully aware that I have something of an obsession ,healthy liking for Unconditional and so it wasn’t long before my eye were diverted to the impressive range of pieces on offer. For me, Garment Quarter has really hit the nail on the head (apologies for the out of character manly expression, very unlike me I know). A fantastic range of products, excellent visual merchandising and a team of friendly and helpful staff. Now John, if you could just ban me from the store so I don’t end up giving everyone ‘I Owe You’ vouchers for Christmas that would be great.... Check out next months edition for all the must haves for the winter holiday’s an remember always be stylish, be yourself and be happy.

www.tallulahtheatre.com

Tallulah is the new community performance group, meeting weekly in the heart of Bristol. Tallulah welcomes lesbian, bisexual, transgender or questioning women who have a passion for drama and performance and want to be part of a like-minded community of theatre creators. Tallulah are now working towards 2 separate evenings of theatre performance for the LGBT history month in 2011. The first performance of ‘READING RUBYFRUIT’ will take place on the 11th February during OUTSET (the Brewhouse Theatre, Taunton’s LGBT theatre weekend) and then in May (date tbc as soon as possible) part of the ‘Sistershow Revisited’; a new exhibition project that enables audiences to take a fresh look at Bristol’s feminist past. The group is run and directed by Louise Barrett. Louise is a freelance theatre practitioner and also Director of Pretty Good Girl Dance Theatre. Louise says, “Response so far has proved just what a needed theatre resource this is. Amateur theatre groups have a great robust community, however the plays and musicals are often heterosexual in their plots and themes. This could mean gay women feel disconnected with such work and such groups. We are busy creating a totally relevant piece of theatre for the lesbian community. The women have a varied amount of performance experience but all this means is you will find real lesbians up there on stage telling your stories and exploring issues in a truthful and heart felt way. Something happens when you start to explore your sexuality journey through theatre– what happens is you liberate yourself and those around you” TALLULAH not only gives women a chance to be themselves but it gives them the platform to CELEBRATE themselves and their sexuality through live performance.”

Community : Pride

News from Prides around the UK Manchester Pride 2010 raised £115,000 for charity, bringing the total generated since 2003 to £895,000. Headline acts such as Kelis, Chicane, Beverley Knight and Belinda Carlisle helped generate a large number of ticket sales during the Big Weekend over the August Bank Holiday. The money will be used over the coming months to support various lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) groups and projects across Greater Manchester. It will also support the Lesbian and Gay Foundation’s ‘Free Condom and Lube’ scheme and the George House Trust HIV Welfare Fund. Jackie Crozier, Festival Director of Manchester Pride, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and we’re absolutely delighted with the figure. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that everyone who supported Manchester Pride 2010 has made a positive contribution to the future of the LGBT community in Greater Manchester. Manchester Pride is a team effort and it wouldn’t be possible for us to stage the event we do without the help and support of so many organisations and individuals from across the city. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to each and every person who helped us along the way.”

Manchester Pride 2011

Great news Manchester Pride is celebrating its 21st Birthday in 2011. Now what better way to celebrate August Bank Holiday than to celebrate with them. As you read above Manchester Pride is not just about a good time but about doing good. So if you have not been before, 2011 is one not to miss, and if you have been before you will know why you have to come back. Manchester has long been a city that fully embraces its diversity and appreciates the contribution that the LGBT community make to their city . Their lead is one that many cities should follow, and Manchester Pride lead on a truly community lead event is one many cities should take note of. Now as one of the many who love Manchester Pride I would remind you to book early as the accommodation is the first thing to go. Find out everything you need to know at www.manchersterpride.com

Politics: Bristol South

Dawn Primarolo MP Dawn Primarolo MP response..... I’m proud of Labour’s achievements, working with and on behalf of LGBT people. Thankfully, the UK in 2010 is a much more tolerant place than it was in 1997. There are, I believe, two central reasons for that. The first is that social attitudes are continuing to change – people, on the whole, have become more tolerant and open minded. Just as importantly is that the law has been changed to help let LGBT people know that the Government is on their side. The equalisation of the age of consent, the abolition of Section 28 and the introduction of Civil Partnerships have all made a huge difference to thousands of people in Bristol. As a Minister, I was very proud to take the lead on legislation which gave more rights to gay and lesbian parents. We had to fight for all of these changes, and there are some people who would want to turn the clock back. That celebration was there for everyone to see at Pride. Thanks to the tireless work of so many volunteers, Bristol finally has a Pride event which helped to unite all of our city’s communities. I know that many Labour Party members attended, and were delighted that the festival was such an overwhelming success. While things have changed so much for LGBT people, we need to continue to work hard to promote equality throughout Bristol. Tackling homophobic bullying in schools, for example, must not be a casualty of public spending cuts. And, while we recognise the tremendous advance that Civil Partnerships brought, we should go further, and support the introduction of marriage for gay men and lesbians. Bristol is a wonderful city – proud of its tolerance and diversity. I can assure Out Bristol readers that Labour will always work with you to keep it that way.

Community : Peter Holt Name: Position: Organisation:

Peter Holt Service Director of Communication and Marketing Bristol City Council

What is the remit of your role? I’m the city council’s communication and marketing director - which means I’m responsible for promoting the council’s policies and services to the people of Bristol and beyond - through the media, our own publications, and on the internet. I’m also responsible for managing complaints about council services, for consultation and research activity, for promoting Bristol as a location for TV and movie filming, and for supporting and arranging festivals and events - including supporting next year’s Pride. What does your role mean for LGB Bristol? As an out gay man myself - and the most senior out LGBT officer in the council - I guess I’m always conscious of needing to make the most of being in a position of influence. As a professional communicator, I try hard to make sure that Bristol’s LGBT community isn’t left out of the dialogue. It’s also my job to recognise that many LGBT individuals are just that - individuals - and aren’t going to be reached through collective LGBT channels (important though publications like Out Bristol are!). What do you find most rewarding in your life? The variety, the intellectual challenge, and the ability to work with so many people genuinely dedicated to high quality public services. What is your proudest moment in your career to date? Tricky question. I used to be in charge of housing in a London borough, for 5 years in the mid-late 90s. At the start of those 5 years, we had 8 tower blocks of council flats. At the end of my 5 years, we had knocked four of them down and replaced them with terrace houses with individual back gardens. Hundreds of individuals families who used to have a sometimes urine-soaked lift to negotiate then had their own front door and own back garden, and I guess I take some pride in being one of the people who helped overcome a mountain of difficulties to make that happen. What would be your one piece of advice to anyone starting out in their career? I haven’t worked out yet what I want to do when I grow up, so not sure I’d be the best person to give such advice. I would say though: have a careful think through not just what you’re good at, but also what you’d enjoy. I love my job, and that’s what makes it easier to get up on cold winter mornings. Having held two senior civilian roles in policing (in London and in Belfast) and seeing how far policing has come (including in terms of LGBT issues, albeit with further still to go), if I were starting my career now, knowing what I know, I think I’d seriously consider becoming a copper (not least to help them continue the necessary journey).
