FROM THE EDITOR Publishing HIGH STREET Neighborhoods for the past 10 years has been one of the most enjoyable enterprises of my career, both professionally and personally. It has been a pleasure to work with an incredibly dedicated group of sponsors, advertisers, organization representatives, board members and staff.

High Street Fund, dozens of non-profit neighborhood organizations have received grants to support their programs and services. To date, through the generosity of our business partners and special event fundraisers, we have raised in excess of $80,000 to support the organizations you will find listed on the inside back cover.

Through our cooperative marketing and branding efforts, High Street and its adjacent neighborhoods have been positioned as the heart and soul of the city, from the South Side with German Village and Merion Village north to downtown, the Short North Arts District, the Arena District, University District, Clintonville and Worthington. This once fragmented urban landscape is now recognized as a contiguous stretch of vibrant residential and commercial landscape, predominantly owned and operated by small business entrepreneurs committed to offering quality goods and services.

As Outlook Media, Inc. takes over the reins of HIGH STREET, please be assured that the publishers are committed to the same mission that High Street Neighborhoods has established since its founding in June 2001.

Another objective has been to serve as a community cheerleader, promoting special events and activities taking place in High Street neighborhoods. Through the ART PRODUCTION David Vance 614-261-9905 www.greenshagdesign.com greenshag@columbus.rr.com

Traveling with High Street to...

Yellow Springs, Ohio Travel writer Aaron Leventhal

The village of Yellow Springs, surrounded by cornfields and lush woodlands in rural southwestern Ohio, has been a bastion of creativity, activism and nonconformity for nearly two centuries. Tecumseh, leader of the Shawnee nation, made frequent visits to the healing waters of Yellow Springs in Glen Helen. Renowned educator Horace Mann chose to serve as Antioch College’s first president in 1853, championing equal educational opportunities for both men and women. The Underground Railroad, Civil Rights struggle and anti-Vietnam demonstrations are all a part of the historic fabric of this funky Midwest college town of almost 4,000 residents. (The college is closed, but will reopen in 2012.) Many art galleries, bookshops, boutiques and new age stores are found in Yellow Springs.

Recently, my wife Beth and I spent a delightful weekend in Yellow Springs. We stayed just outside downtown at the Yellow Springs Country Bed & Breakfast – a restored 1820s home with a large living room, kitchen and gourmet breakfasts served by the cook – and savored a few days of total rest and relaxation. When we were ready for activity, we enjoyed strolling down Xenia Avenue, the village’s main street with loads of specialty shops, art galleries, bookshops, boutiques, neighborhood pubs and excellent restaurants. Thankfully, you won’t find any franchise or big box operations here. There are hundreds of acres of nature preserves nearby with wooded trails to hike and bike. If wellness and spiritual quest are your passion, there are dozens of professional practitioners offering workshops and individual appointments from massage and yoga, to acupuncture and Tai Chi. In the evening, several cafés offer live music, and the Little Art Theatre shows independent films and documentaries. The Great Outdoors: The 1,000-acre Glen Helen Nature Preserve east of town has 26 miles of foot trails which take hikers past waterfalls, limestone and dolomite cliffs, a pine forest and trailside museum. Native wildflowers are in continuous bloom. John Bryan State Park, adjacent to the Glen, is a 750-acre preserve with trails overlooking Clifton Gorge and Little Miami River. Bikers will enjoy the 78-mile Little Miami Scenic Trail, paved over a converted railroad corridor running through Yellow Springs. Nearby Attractions: The historic Clifton Mill (www.cliftonmill.com) is one of the largest water powered grist mills still in existence. The Mill hosts its popular Christmas show from November 26-January 1 with more than four million lights, 3,500 antique Santas and a toy collection from the ‘40s through the ‘60s. The newest addition to the show is a replica of Script Ohio. The Mill offers breakfast and lunch daily, and dinner from Thursday-Saturday from 4-9 p.m. Just outside of town is Brandeberry Winery and Vineyard (www.brandeberrywinery.com), open for wine tastings and light refreshments. Young’s Jersey Dairy Farm (www.youngsdairy.com), located on Route 68 a mile from downtown, is nationally recognized for its homemade ice cream and

Nightlife: Three cafés, Peach’s Grill, 104 Xenia Ave; Emporium Wines and the Underdog Café, 233 Xenia Ave; and The Gulch, 128 Dayton St. have live music and great food every weekend. In addition, it’s only a 30-minute drive to Dayton’s historic downtown Oregon district for excellent dining and entertainment. Where to Stay: Lodging is plentiful and economical, especially in the winter season with rates under $100 a night, double occupancy. Check out Arthur Morgan Bed & Breakfast, (www.arthurmorganhouse.com), Grinnell Mill Bed & Breakfast (www.grinnellmill.com), Springs Cottage (www.springscottage.com), Springs Motel (www.thespringsmotel.com) and Yellow Springs Country Bed & Breakfast (www.yscountrybedandbreakfast.com). Getting There: Yellow Springs is about an hour drive from downtown Columbus. Take I-70 west to U.S. 68, 52A exit. Turn left and it’s eight miles to Yellow Springs. For more information, log on to http://www.destinationyellowsprings.com/ or call (937) 767-2686. Traveling with High Street to...

New Orleans: Good Eats in the Big Easy New Orleans is back. Hurricane Katrina could not damage the indomitable spirit of the residents of this remarkable city dedicated to the pleasures of music, food and good times. The city’s colorful, historic past has influenced its architecture, its music and especially its food. From its founding by French Creoles almost 300 years ago to its Spanish, Yankee and African influences, the Big Easy is unique in retaining an Old World ambiance and a certain joie de vivre found nowhere else in America. Orleanians have elevated cooking and dining to a fine art. Its Cajun cooking originates from the French Acadians who migrated from Nova Scotia in the 19th century. Robust, peppery and loaded with fat and flour, Cajun specialties include crawfish etoufée, andouille sausage and jambalaya. Creole cooking, on the other hand, is more urban and less spicy, created by people of mixed French, Spanish, Caribbean and African origins. The Creoles have given us red beans and rice, beignets and gumbo. Before my wife Beth and I recently went to New Orleans, I asked Henry Butcher, owner and chef of the Creole Kitchen in Mt. Vernon Plaza, for his suggestions about where to eat. Henry, a Louisiana native and former New Orleans cook, recommended a half dozen restaurants, many of which are local favorites. Mother’s could have the best homestyle cooking in the city. The laid-back, Midtown diner, established in 1938, specializes in gumbo, caramelized black ham, grits and red beans and rice. According to owner/chef Jerry Amato, “New Orleans is unique because it has an authentic regional orientation. All of us use the same basic ingredients – red fish, oysters, crawfish, red beans, rice and plantains. That makes New Orleans a whole lot different than, let’s say, New York or San Francisco.” (401 Poydras St., 504-523-9656) Arnaud’s, a French Quarter landmark since 1918, specializes in authentic hauteCreole cookery. Known for its Shrimp Arnaud (remoulade), oyster stew and rack of lamb, Arnaud’s also has a distinguished wine cellar. (813 Bienville St., 504-523-5433)

Dooky Chase’s, established in 1946, is a Creole dining landmark in the heart of the ‘hood, with an impressive collection of African American art. It is famous for its fried chicken and catfish, sausages, mac and cheese, greens and other classic soul food dishes. (2301 Orleans Ave., 504-821-0600) Gumbo Shop, just around the corner from St. Louis Cathedral, is located in a 1795 French Quarter building. This casual dining favorite serves Creole favorites from seafood okra gumbo, crawish etoufée and shrimp Creole to po-boys, macque choux corn and hot bread pudding with whiskey sauce. (630 St. Peter St., 504525-1486) New Orleans attractions: Travel writer Aaron Leventhal with owner/chef Sightseeing is the perfect way Jerry Amato at Mother's. to work up an appetite between meals. Check out the Audubon Zoological Gardens, Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours, the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar Line, above ground cemeteries and voodoo temples, Natchez Riverboat Cruises operated by Gray Line Tours (800-233-2628) and the oldest continuously operating street railway in America, dating back 150 years. For more information, contact the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau, 800-672-6124 or www.neworleanscvb.com. Hubbard Mansion Bed & Breakfast is our choice for the place to stay in New Orleans. Located on historic St. Charles Avenue, the elegant Greek Revival home features five guest rooms, a carriage house, period antiques and delectable Continental-plus breakfasts. (504-897-3535, www.hubbardmansion.com)

Camellia Grill is near Tulane University on the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line. This classic, counter-only diner serves what could be the best cheeseburgers and chili-cheese omelets anywhere. (626 S. Carrollton Ave., 504-309-2679) Court of Two Sisters was once the French Quarter residence of the royal governor of colonial Louisiana in 1726. Its daily jazz brunch buffet from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. has more than 60 items, including eggs benedict, standing rib roast and duck á l’orange. (613 Royal St., 504522-7261)

Columbus-based travel writer Aaron Leventhal has established a new, small group vacation travel business and will be taking visitors to the upcoming New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April 2011. Check it out at www.leventhaltravel.com. The elegant Hubbard Mansion Bed & Breakfast is located on historic St. Charles Avenue.

The Florentine Restaurant Tony Penzone founded the Florentine Restaurant in 1945 after serving as a cook in WWII. By adopting old family recipes from Italy, where he grew up, Tony’s emphasis was on Italian dinners with old European flavors. Tony’s oldest son Joe managed the restaurant from 1976 to 1998. Joe’s expertise was in refining the Old World recipes and creating new dishes that remain many of the most popular dishes today. Joe’s sons Peter and Nick manage this great Columbus tradition, now in its third generation and is one of central Ohio’s oldest restaurants that remains true to its Italian heritage. The Florentine is located minutes from downtown and remains a popular gathering place noted for its authentic Italian food. HOLIDAY SPECIAL: $5 off any dinner entrée

Serving the High Street corridor between Clintonville and downtown, COTA’s popular Night Owl (Line 21) service operates Friday and Saturday evenings from 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Enjoy the many entertainment and cultural destinations in the corridor without the cost and hassle of parking. And, beginning in January 2011, Night Owl service is being extended to German Village and the Brewery District. For more information go to www.cota.com or call (614) 228-1776

Co-owners Joe Spinelli and Bill Ward are particularly fond of the large front windows that can open to the street and the new Gallery at Spinelli’s Deli. Creole Kitchen

King Arts Complex

Owner and chef Henry Butcher Sr. was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. He moved to New Orleans as a young man to attend chef school and cooked for several years at the Gumbo Shop and The Hyatt Superdome. Henry moved to Columbus in the 1980s and served as chef at Tony’s Italian Ristorante and the Delaware Hotel before opening his own Creole Kitchen in 2006. The business is a family affair with son Henry Jr. and daughters Tonya and Antonette all pitching in. The popular carryout features authentic Louisiana specialties from jumbalaya to crawfish etouffée.

Opened in March 1987, after a $2.7 million renovation of the Pythian Theater, the King Arts Complex is one of the oldest African-American instituions in the city, serving as a major anchor for development of the King Lincoln District. The Complex is an oasis for cultural and educational activities as well as a community facility for special events. The King Arts Complex highlights significant contributions of African-Americans throughout the year.

When publisher Aaron Leventhal launched the High Street Neighborhoods magazine, he had two goals: to make it a financial success and to give back to the community. He accomplished both objectives! The Columbus Jewish Foundation is proud to have partnered with Aaron Leventhal in fulfilling his charitable aspirations through the High Street Fund. We enjoyed every minute of our wonderful association with him and the High Street Fund’s board of advisors. Now that High Street Neighborhoods has changed hands, we look forward to working with its new owners, Chris Hayes and Michael Daniels of Outlook Media. We wish them every success.
