From the Publishers Dear Readers,

Welcome to the “Living, Working, and Playing” issue of High Street Neighborhoods, the first issue to be published by us, the new owners, Outlook Media. We can’t tell you how excited we are to add High Street to our family of products. Its mission to highlight the people, places, and businesses that make our neighborhoods great is very much in keeping with the Outlook philosophy, and we’re looking forward to continuing this theme by connecting with you, our readers and advertisers. But before we get into where we’re headed, let’s stop for a moment and consider where we have been. For almost eleven years, the irascible and seemingly unstoppable Aaron Leventhal has guided High Street Neighborhoods, growing it from being essentially a German Village-centric coupon magazine, to a citywide shopping guide encompassing twelve neighborhoods, printing 100,000 copies, distributed at over 500 locations. Aaron has called High Street Neighbor-

Table of Contents

hoods a “cooperative marketing and branding effort”, and while we agree with that statement, and recognize the value of it (we did buy the magazine, after all), really High Street Neighborhoods has been a labor of love. A tenacious cheerleader with a giant heart, Aaron’s efforts to promote Columbus and her neighborhoods can only be measured by the number of business owners who’ve kept their doors open because of Aaron’s help, the thousands upon thousands of dollars Aaron has raised for charity, and the incredible relationships he has created with all of you. This publication, the loyalty of its readers and advertisers, and its longevity are a testament to the mad-scientist-like skills of one Aaron Leventhal, and for his labor, love, and genius, we are exceedingly grateful. Aaron, we thank you so much for the opportunity to become the stewards of High Street, and wish you nothing but the best in the years to come…Though something tells us we’ll be hearing from you (see Aaron’s travel piece on page 35).

We have some big shoes to fill –literally. We are aware of that. And in that vein, we make the following pledge to you. Building upon Aaron’s good work, we will continue to produce a high quality product focusing on small business owners, valueminded shoppers, and anyone who embraces the concept that shopping local is the proverbial bee’s knees. We will continue to focus on our core urban neighborhoods, while expanding our reach into the areas where you, our readers, live, work, and play. We will give you the outstanding service and personal touch you have come to expect. The only significant change we want you to see in the short term is the sudden and frequent use of email in communications –Aaron loved this magazine with all of his heart, but he’ll be the first to tell you, he has no love of email. Columbus, despite the little bit of grey weather here and there, is a town that knows how to have a good time, how to work hard, and how to live the good life. Our generally sunny disposition, friendly small business environment, and extremely stable economy have helped to position Columbus 19 - Franklinton 21 - Downtown 23 - King Lincoln 25 - Olde Towne East

as a city on the cutting edge – we are now too educated, too affluent, and too extraordinary to be that quintessential “test market” for big business. Kudos to us, but more importantly kudos to you. We believe that Columbus is precisely the sum of its parts its unique neighborhoods, incredible people, and positive attitude have made us who we are, and we’re pretty proud of who we are. In this issue of High Street Neighborhoods, we sought to capture the spirit of our city and our neighborhoods through you, the residents. We wanted to make sure we talked to plenty of you, to get your perspective on what life is really like here in good old C-Bus, and we’re very happy with the result. We invite you to take a look, visit our advertisers, and continue to support your neighborhoods. Our next issue “Columbus’ Creative Cuisine” will be on stands in late September, but until then enjoy your summer. We hope we’ll be seeing you around! Michael and Chris Co-Publishers

“I like living here because almost everything is right here! Off of High Street, you have a library, a great Downtown, a mall, the farmer's market, Graeter's, and easy access to the bike trail and Antrim Park. It's such a great place to live.”

“Working in Worthington has been great for my business. Not only am I close to my client base, but I’m also close to all the great stuff in Worthington. It’s the best of both worlds.

“Worthington looks like Maine, and has a night life like the Short North! There’s always something fun happening on the Green or at the MAC, and downtown has some of my favorite places! P.K. O’Ryan’s, House Wine, and the Worthington Inn offers a great night out, no matter what you’re in the mood for.”

“The location in Clintonville is great! We've been here for over two years and I think it's because we feel it's the right place for us and the rightminded people here in the neighborhood.”

“I love living in Upper Arlington because of its small town community feel. It’s this great little town minutes from anywhere in the city. It’s a great place to raise children, we have some great restaurants, and our 4th of July parade is fantastic!”

“Working in Upper Arlington is fantastic. The people are great. We get a lot of fun regulars. Plus you can’t beat the chocolate!”

“I really only go to two places in town... and they are both in Upper Arlington. If I’m not throwing some back with my boys at The Pointe Tavern, I’m savoring some french deliciousness at La Chatelaine French Bakery and Bistro. They are both muy bien!”

“We love that Grandview is an old neighborhood and has so much character. So many amazing locally-owned, family businesses like Riffe’s Market and Knotty Pine. We love the live music scene. Byrne’s has great bluegrass and Woodlands keeps getting these incredible acts that we could only see at a festival!

“What I like most about working in Grandview is the various services and suppliers that are available in such a close proximity"

“Grandview is great to play in. Living here, we play here a lot. After we take up some tennis at McKinley Park, we love to head over to Meister's Bar to watch the, as they say in Europe, 'football'. Soccer rules. Go Crew!”

“I’d have to say my favorite thing about working in the Shorth North is the people. I like the creative people that walk around either on their lunch break or day off.”

“I love Franklinton for multiple reasons. I love the people my neighbors are like family, I spend more time with them than anyone else. Also, I love the promise of what it can be after years of neglect. It’s wonderful to see people who have worked here for ages and they’re now seeing the fruits of their labor.”

“I love working here because it’s close to downtown and the bus lines - which is convenient for me. And I love working at COSI because the people are fun and I feel like I’m doing something important.”

“In the three years I have worked at Franklin County Veterans Memorial, I have enjoyed being part of the Franklinton community. “Living downtown, and especially at the Hartman, is great. The location is so central close to all of the great pocket districts like German Village and the Short North, and so easy to get around, either on foot or super quickly via car. Its nice to be able to go out and essentially never leave the downtown area!”

“Why do I love working downtown? Because the sun is always shining here,” he says laughing. “There's lots of neat people, great restaurants and it's always interesting and fun, even when it does rain!”

“There's nothing better than going out downtown after a hard day working on High Street Neighborhoods Magazine. “I really love living in the King Lincoln district. New surprises keep popping up in King Lincoln all the time. Come down and see our murals! They will put us on the map. Say ‘hello’ to the new Short North.”

“One of the reasons I love to work here is the people who come here - the friendliness of the community. And the other reason is the King Arts Complex, the Urban League, and the Lincoln Theater. All of that culture here.”

“King Lincoln has been my life. My church is here, St. Paul A.M.E., the oldest African-American church in Columbus. And I am now Executive Director of the Community Property Development Organization, which is the non-profit arm of St. Paul. So I volunteer here and have been here since 1999, since we first envisioned the project. I love King Lincoln. All of it.”

“Why do I live in Olde Towne East? It was the architecture that drew me in; you don't find that type of style and craftsmanship anymore. But then I grew to love the people. The community here is always trying to make this a great place to work and live, everyone is committed to making it better!”

“If I didn’t love the neighborhood, I wouldn’t have set up shop here. I really like the diversity of the people and the neighborhood here. It's fun, interesting and the community is so supportive.”

“My son goes to school here, and my husband has a business in this area, so we literally live work and play in German Village. We love the diversity as far as exposure to people, culture and opportunities. St. Mary’s is the best fit for us because of the exposure to real world applications. I come home from work on Friday, park my car, and don’t have to use it again until Monday morning!”

“It’s great working in an area that’s so cool. You know, I’ve always liked the historic feel brick streets, the jolly Englishman down the street, the whole vibe. Oh, there’s a lot to do. But it’s still historical.”

“The Village is a great place to play because it’s all historical. Everyone’s real proud and community-oriented. Schwarzenegger was here like three times last year. Where else can that happen? And Thurman’s! If you come to German Village, you gotta have burgers and beer.”

Traveling with High Street to...

Deer Creek Lodge and Conference Center With gas escalating to more than four dollars a gallon and a still lethargic economy, this summer may not be the best time to travel hundreds of miles to a resort destination. I recommend instead a stay at Deer Creek Lodge & Conference Center, located in Pickaway County less than a oneTravel writer hour drive from downtown Aaron Leventhal Columbus. Some good friends and I recently enjoyed a relaxing stay at the lodge and discovered that it’s ideal for a weekday or weekend getaway. Deer Creek Lodge is situated in the heart of the 3,100acre Deer Creek State Park, once home to nomadic Indian tribes that hunted and gathered plants along the banks of the creek and in the surrounding lush meadows and dense woodlands. Today the region is filled with rich farmland and, thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the creek was dammed in the early 1970s to create Deer Creek Lake. Built in 1981, the lodge, operated by Xanterra Parks and Resorts, has 110 guest rooms, all with balconies overlooking the lake or woodlands. There also are 25 spacious, two-bedroom cottages, each with fully equipped kitchen, bedding and linens, full bath, living room, charcoal grill and screened-in porch.

Park Lodge. Ben is celebrating 10 years as chef at the state park lodges, overseeing the culinary needs of the lodge and conference center and regularly creating new menu selections. Recent additions to the menu include a 14-ounce rib eye steak topped with blue cheese butter, vegetable lo mein with teriyaki sauce and batter-fried cod fillet with homemade hush puppies. He also supervises Harding’s Lounge, with a selection of sandwiches, oven-baked pizzas, full-service bar and large-screen TV, open daily at 5 p.m. Rafter’s Restaurant overlooking Deer Creek Lake in the lodge. Outdoor activities range from Getting There. Take I 70-S to exit 84, left on Route 56 hiking and swimming to tennis and horseback riding. into Mt.
