On the fashion front, I finally got to put into action an idea that’s been brewing in my head for years – the first Bears in Swimwear photo shoot. We teamed up with Coley Cummiskey from Growlr to find a variety of Ohio bears to model the hot swimwear available this season. We also convinced CMH Fashion Week founder Tommy McClure to do a Columbus Queer Style spread and our former fashion writer Ryan Harris to show you how to achieve two hot current looks for less money than the designer prices. I think you’re going to be pleasantly surprised. We are also all atwitter about the cover this month. Brad Henry, president of EduTechnologic, came to me with the idea of taking the cover of outlook and creating an augmented user experience. When you download the Junaio app to your smart device, launch it and then hold it over our cover (and other places in the magazine) you’ll be engaged in an interactive 3-D experience. It’s freaking cool.
Outlook is proud to be the first local publication to bring this experience to Columbus. We thought you deserved something new and fun. In that vein, AR is just one of several changes you will begin seeing over the next few months. Without giving away too much, just know that we will be tweaking, rearranging and sprucing up everything in the magazine. Times are a-changing, and so are we. We hope you enjoy this issue. Virginia Fills the Stadium
by Robby Stephens, Social Tsar Ever wonder what Virginia West is really like? She probably doesn’t know it, but I’ve been attending Virginia West shows for many years.
Columbus Represents! For the second year in a row, a Columbus team took home first place in the Bluegrass Classic Bowling Tournament, which took place Feb. 15-17 in Louisville. Congratulations to Dan Vaccarrella’s team - Dan, Kevin Hepner, Cary Orlando and Shane Wirth - for their victory!
I like her music selection, cast members and super fun choreography, and Virginia’s most recent show certainly delivered all of my favorite things. Make sure to keep your eye out for her upcoming shows.
I had a great time at the tournament, which draws hundreds of GLBT bowlers from around the United States and Canada. The hospitality suite at the host hotel was destination No. 1 — after bowling, of course. After indulging in some spirits, it was off to the bars! The weekend’s host bar, Tryangle, was a cheap cab ride from the hotel. Another hotspot was Connections, an amazing nightclub offering six different bars. It’s one of the biggest GLBT nightclubs in the country. Louisville is a great place for a quick getaway weekend. For more on my visit check out our Facebook page.

Ex-Columbus Crew Player Comes Out A member of the 2008 Columbus Crew team that won professional soccer’s MLS Cup came out Feb. 15 with a blog post that triggered a wave of support from fellow athletes and fans. Robbie Rogers, 25, who played in Columbus from 2007 to 2011, posted a message online titled, “The Next Chapter,” in which he alluded to the difficulty of being a gay man in professional sports. “Life is only complete when your loved ones know you. When they know your true feelings, when they know who and how you love. Life is simple when your secret is gone. Gone is the pain that lurks in the stomach at work, the pain from avoiding questions, and at last the pain from hiding such a deep secret.” Rogers was released by his team in England weeks before coming out. He said he planned to “step away” from soccer but was not clear on whether that’s for good. He co-owns a men’s clothing line called Halsey.
Gay Softball Series Will Return in 2015 They had such a good time in 2010 that they’re coming back. The North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance voted to bring the Gay Softball World Series back to Columbus in 2015. It’s an unusually quick second date: Cities usually have to wait longer to get another turn as host of the event, which draws more than 4,000 visitors. “The feedback has been so positive,” said Dallas Aldridge of the Columbus Lesbian and Gay Softball Association. Organizers are seeking volunteers to help with fundraising, event planning and marketing. They’re also sponsoring a contest to find a slogan and logo for the 2015 series. Seach for “2015 Gay Softball World Series” on Facebook to get contact info.

Local High School Hosts Drag Pageant A high school where everyone can be who they are doesn’t just exist on Fox. The Arts and College Prep Academy, a Columbus charter school that prides itself on an open, accepting atmosphere, hosted its firstever drag pageant Feb. 8. Six students sang or lip-synched, danced, strutted the runway and answered judges’ questions before classmates and family. Arsenio Williams, aka Lauren Pointer, won the ACPA Drag Superstar title. Pointer is a senior who’s an accomplished performer on other stages as well. She said she got a callback recently from America’s Got Talent, which conducted auditions in Columbus in January.
Anti-Gay Slurs Cost Ohio Mayor Her Job The mayor of a small southeastern Ohio village resigned under pressure Feb. 9 after the police chief and much of the force stood up to her repeated slurs against a gay officer. Mary McAngus was the mayor of Pomeroy, along the Ohio River in Meigs County, since late 2011. According to Police Chief Mark E. Proffitt, she said she didn’t like “a queer” working for the village and didn’t want the partner of officer Kyle Calendine visiting the station like other family members do. Proffitt and eight others submitted sworn statements against the mayor. “Kyle Calendine would lay down his life for anyone in need,” Proffitt told The Columbus Dispatch. “This is a win for Kyle, for our department and for the gay community. It lets people know that no matter what, we’re all in this together.” Calendine told WSAZ-TV in Huntington, W.Va: “It was a big sigh of relief to know that ... I could now work without the added stress.”
’02 Buckeyes Captain Backs Marriage Effort A co-captain of the 2002 Ohio State football team that won the national championship has endorsed the effort to put marriage equality on the 2013 statewide ballot. Simon Fraser, a defensive end for the Buckeyes who went on to play for the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons, said he supports the Freedom To Marry and Religious Freedom amendment proposed for the Ohio constitution. (See Page 12 for more on the effort.) “Now is the time to end marriage discrimination in Ohio,” Fraser said. “Among great American traditions are equal treatment under the law and religious freedom for all. These principles do not conflict, but exist in harmony. This amendment respects a religion’s right to recognize or not recognize marriages while putting all Ohioans on equal footing.” Fraser is currently a student at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Traxx Columbus Finds New Downtown Home Traxx Columbus, which bills itself as the only official African-American LGBT club in the Midwest, made a comeback in February with eight nights of events at Downtown’s Long Street Live. Since its start in 2010 as an expansion of the popular Atlanta dance club of the same name, Traxx has been housed at the Outland Club in the Brewery District, then at Wall Street.
Ohio Mayhem Take to the Ice The Ohio Mayhem, the team organized by Gay Hockey Ohio, is currently 2-1-2 and in the middle of the standings for the 13-team Columbus Adult Hockey League. The Mayhem have four games in March: March 7 vs. Direwolves at Chiller Ice Works, 401 E Wilson Bridge Rd, 9p. March 14 vs. Home Brew at Chiller Dublin, 7001 Dublin Park Dr, 8:40p. March 21 vs. Donkeys at Chiller Easton, 3600 Chiller Ln, 8:10p. March 28 vs. Rhinos at Chiller Dublin, 7:30p.
Capital Pride Band Seeks New Members The Capital Pride Band, Columbus’ LGBT marching and concert band, is looking for new members. The band needs percussionists, woodwind players, and flag corps and color guard members. The musical backgrounds of members range from band directors and those with degrees in music to others who haven’t picked up an instrument since high school. Capital Pride will start rehearsing in April for the Columbus Pride parade on June 22. The band also plans a trip to Chicago’s Pride festival the week afterward. If you’re interested in joining the Capital Pride Band, email info@prideband.org or call 614.325.1590.
Sign Up for LGBT Tennis The Columbus Metropolitan Tennis Organization, a 40-year-old group that promotes competitive and recreational tennis in the LGBT community, will be accepting registrations in March for spring and summer leagues.
General manager Brandon Chapman said the new Traxx will feature a greater variety of DJs and live entertainment, and he’s offering birthday and VIP packages as well. Another new draw: People 30 and older get in free from 10:30p and midnight.
Singles and doubles leagues, some of which are organized according to skill levels, run from May to August. The organization hosted its first tournament in 2012, and organizers say they’re planning another this year.
“It’s for anybody and everybody,” Chapman said. “We are a destination spot.”
It costs $25 to $35 to participate. You can register online at cmto1.org.

qmunity Church Fires Assistant Principal Who Spoke for Marriage Equality by Pete Lovering
LGBT Pentecostals Gather in Columbus Being part of a Pentecostal church often means denying one’s identity as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. And being gay for many means leaving churches in which they were raised. The few, proud people in both groups — openly gay Pentecostal pastors, congregation members and allies who accept and welcome them — convened in Columbus from Feb. 14 to 17 for the national conference of a group working to change perceptions in both groups. The Fellowship of Reconciling Pentecostals International worshiped, prayed, ordained new clergy and discussed issues faced by LGBT people of faith. The group believes that scripture used to condemn LGBT people actually denounces actions that aren’t related to sexual orientation. “We believe God made us all, and He loves us and wants a relationship with us,” said Pastor Kelly Cross, a lesbian who leads Master’s Commission New Covenant Church on Columbus’ South Side.
Events Focus on HIV in Black Community Throughout Ohio and the rest of the United States, HIV has disproportionately affected the black community in staggering numbers. Columbus Public Health, AIDS Resource Center Ohio and Nationwide Children’s Hospital were among groups that stepped up testing efforts to mark National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on Feb. 7. Wall Street Nightclub was part of the day, too, giving out $20 gift cards to people along with their results. “A proactive approach is the only way to reverse these high infection rates,” said Dwayne Steward, an outlook columnist and HIV testing coordinator for ARC Ohio’s Mpowerment Center. “We, as a community, need to be educated, we need to test, and those who are positive need to seek treatment. We can’t win this fight until the stigma ends.”

Al Gore Shares Tale of Mikey’s Pizza Line Former Vice President Al Gore isn’t Facebook friends with Joel Diaz, but he, too, knows the story of the late December confrontation between the ARC Ohio development officer, a friend, fellow pizza-buyers and one homophobe waiting in line for some Mikey’s Late Night Slice. He shared it with Ellen DeGeneres on her Feb. 12 show. Gore was telling Ellen about how the tide turns on issues — the environment, racial tolerance, gay rights — when people start calling out those who spew nonsense. “I saw a story recently about two gay guys waiting in a pizza line and some homophobe made some nasty comment and literally everybody else in the line spoke up and said, ‘Hey, cut that out,’” Gore said. “We’re winning that conversation. It’s a great thing.” Diaz, whose Facebook account of the Mikey’s incident went viral, called Gore’s comments “one of the coolest things ever.” Got qmunity news? Mike Moroski faced a difficult choice. Following a Facebook conversation with a friend about the topic of marriage, he posted a blog entry to his website that declared his support for marriage equality. “I unabashedly believe that gay people SHOULD be allowed to marry,” he wrote as part of a 650-word essay on Jan. 27. “Ethically, morally and legally I believe this.” Moroski has always been a supporter of marriage equality for gay couples. “I never had to ‘come to terms with it,’” he said. “It was al- “Over the course of my 12-year career in ways something I felt just made sense.” Catholic schools I saw this shift: Students who were really in favor of marriage equality But he also was an assistant principal at to those who were really against it, to stuCincinnati’s Purcell Marian High School, dents who either support it or just don’t which is part of a Catholic church that vehe- care.” mently opposes marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples. Rush Limbaugh Can Make You Fat by Regina Sewell I’m serious. Listening to Rush Limbaugh can make you fat. And it’s not just Rush Limbaugh’s blathering that can do it. Fred Phelps’ hate mongering can do it, too. In fact, anyone who grabs your attention and plays on your fears can do it. Of course, it’s not enough to just listen. For the fear-mongering to really affect you, you have to really listen to it and believe the message. You can’t just hear Rush talk and think, “What a moron.” You have to believe that a second term with Barack Obama will lead to the end of the world as we know it. You have to believe that you will burn in hell if you don’t stop the gay menace. And it’s not enough to listen to this once, believe it and then forget about it like all those dates you memorized for history exams. You have to keep listening, keep hearing the message and live in mortal fear that awful things are happening now. For most of us, that’s good news because Rush Limbaugh and Fred Phelps aren’t really top hits on gay talk radio. The not-so-good news is that right-wing nutcases aren’t the only sources of chronic fear. Most of us feel the impact of fear on a daily
basis. Whether the fear we struggle with is fear of rejection, judgment, humiliation, pain, disappointment, meaninglessness, commitment, intimacy, failure, death or the unknown, the fear is real. It invades our lives, limits our decisions and guides our choices. How does fear make you fat? Fear floods the body with adrenaline and cortisol. This is great when you are actually being threatened. If you’re facing a hungry tiger that thinks that you look tasty or a street punk who’s pumped to beat you up, these hormones will give you the sudden energy boost you need to get away. But when adrenaline and cortisol racing through your body becomes the status quo, you’re in trouble. Elevated cortisol levels knock your blood sugar levels out of kilter, which leads to sugar cravings. Elevated cortisol levels can wreak havoc on your thyroid, causing your metabolism to slow down. With your metabolism running in low gear, it’s hard not to pack on the pounds, even if you manage to power through the sugar cravings caused by the blood sugar imbalances. Sounds far-fetched? Think about the last big chronic scare you had. Maybe you were watching the polls and it looked like Mitt Romney might win the presidential election. Maybe you were sexually or physically abused as a child and the memories haunt you. Maybe you were horrified by the possibility that your parents would reject you if they found out you’re gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgender or that you secretly fantasized
14 mar 2013
about becoming an accountant. The key is what happened when the fear took hold. If you found yourself at the Starbucks drive-thru with a cheesecake brownie and a Caramel Macchiato or making an emergency run for potato chips and Reese’s Pieces, you’re not alone. Fear sends you looking for a feel-good rush that only a high-carb treat can provide. What to do? Obviously, it’s not good to listen to fear-mongers like Rush Limbaugh or Fred Phelps. And research — real research — shows that Fox News makes you stupid. But it’s not a bad idea to cut back on your intake of news every so often. Even NPR can bring you down. I hate to say it because Amy Goodman is one of my personal heroes, but a daily diet of Democracy Now can lead to bad-news overload. Second, acknowledge your fear. Name it. Journal about it. Accept it. Acknowledging the fact that you’re terrified of speaking in public or that you were sexually abused as a child and are afraid that your partner’s touch may be similarly hurtful can take some of the power away. Then explore it. What is the worst thing that will happen if you forget what you were supposed to say in front of 10 or 100 or 1,000 people? What is the worst thing that will happen if you let someone touch you this way? Then analyze the fear. Most of us hide behind our analytical
The only Rush we like around here is the 1974 rock powerhouse.
minds anyway. “Who me? I don’t need to feel. I can think just fine, thank you.” But we can use this to our advantage. If you accidentally say fornicate instead of formulate in front of your audience, will you really die? Or will you just be embarrassed as they laugh at your faux pas? Are you really the powerless child you once were or do you now have the power to make someone stop hurting you? Can you list the differences between your lover and the person who sexually abused you? Can you list the sources of power you have now that you didn’t have then? And respond to your fear. Find a way to address your fear in a safe way. Maybe do a speech in front of your partner or best friend and imagine there’s an audience. If this goes OK, you might try stepping up your speaking efforts at a Toastmasters group. Not everyone responds to fear by overeating and gaining. Some people manage their fear by obsessing about food and not eating it (anorexia), or they slide into a binge/purge cycle of bulimia. Both come with extensive emotional, psychological and physical costs. If you’re struggling with either anorexia or bulimia, it is really important to find help. These strategies can be deadly. Contact me at the e-mail address below and I will help you find someone who will listen and help you and who won’t judge you or treat you like you’re crazy. I swear on my cats. Two Bossy Grrls Café Goes Old School in Couple’s Joint Venture by Alisa Caton If you’ve seen the Sex Kitten Purr-lesque show around Columbus, you already know the redheaded retro pinup, Bossy Grrl; she’s the scantily clad group’s front woman and founder. Now you no longer have to wait for the next show to catch a glimpse of Bossy Grrl. You can find her at her very own café, Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint. Sandy Rollins, the woman behind Bossy Grrl, and her wife, Amber Myers, attended the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend two years ago and returned to Ohio motivated to open their own retro spot here at home. The annual Las Vegas event features retro cars, music, fashion and burlesque. “It was so much fun being there with the hot rods and the burlesque shows and just the girls walking around. You knew it was happening. ... All the sudden you’d see these women with their hair in pin curls and you were like, ‘OK, its time for the Viva!’” Myers said. Rollins has had a longtime love for everything old school. “We fell in love with it,” she said. “Retro, pinup style is something I’ve always been into.” After a couple years brainstorming what exactly Bossy Grrl’s business venture would be (a food

truck was briefly considered), a spot on N High Street became available, and in November the two started work on Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint. Their café breaks all the rules for your typical coffee spot, but all pinup girls are rule-breakers, right? Bossy Grrl’s is opening at 2598 N High St. They’re online at bossygrrlspinupjoint.com. “We took everything we like, coffee and beer being the staples,” Rollins said. The café features those staples, plus “samiches.” When the two discuss the menu of the place, it’s easy to see who’s at the heart of each. “I’m a beer snob, so we are not going to have Bud Light or Miller Light or anything like that. It has to be good stuff,” Rollins said. “We are definitely having Thirsty Dog. We want local and Ohiobrewed.”
something fun but comfortable.” Caffé Apropos in Harrison West is the coffee supplier for the Pin Up Joint. Antonio, the owner, has been extremely helpful during the opening, Rollins and Myers said. They put “The Big Tony” Italian sub on their menu to show their appreciation. Rollins said they’ve been receiving a lot of help from friends while getting Bossy Grrl’s together. “We’ve had a lot of people from the community help. It’s actually really awesome how many people have helped.” The café is filled with personal touches, as Rollins spearheaded decorating the place. She made the curtains and decoupaged pinup girls and photos of old country stars like Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline to all of the chairs and electricity wall plates. “It’s all in the little things I think,” she said.
Myers is the mastermind of sandwiches. She created a full menu of paninis. One of her favorites is a sandwich her mom used to make for her, dubbed “The Elvis,” with peanut butter, banana and bacon. The menu also features “The Elvis Impersonator” with soy bacon. “Sandy is a vegan, so I’m always conscious in trying to make things that are friendly to people that are vegetarian or vegan,” Myers said. “I like cooking. I like messing with ingredients and making
When you visit for the first time, it’s absolutely necessary to check out the back lounge, because it’s where some of the true gems of the place are being kept. The floor is covered in more than 54,000 pennies — and a couple dimes. “That’s the game, to find the dimes!” Myers said. In the middle of the penny floor is the “’70s Porn Table.” Rollins took old Playboys from the era and

decoupaged a collage of the women on the table, making the furniture completely one-of-a-kind. The woman who claims to have no experience in crafting has done pretty well for herself. Aside from the food and drinks, Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint plans to serve up a regular amount of entertainment. On the fourth Friday of every month, they’ll have a Doo-Wop DJ for “Corsets and Coffee.” Rollins said the event will be geared toward to kink community, and all the music will be retro. Music and passion is another love for the burlesque performer, and she plans on performing in the new café, too. “I tried to sing as much as I could when I was doing burlesque. I’m trying to put together a ragtime, old-school house band.” Other acts the two plan to bring in are The Songbirds, Buckle and Boots, The Velvet Hearts and of course, the Sex Kittens. Rollins said they’re open to bringing in any local acts that match the feel of the place. When asked how it felt to finally be opening Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint after years of planning and dreaming of owning their own place, Myers said, “It just doesn’t feel real.” Small Pond features LGBT business owners in central Ohio. Greg Turner Takes His Boutique From the Web to N High Street by D.A. Steward When looking at the economic landscape in Columbus, or any metropolitan city for that matter, you find few openly gay people of color who own businesses. I’m not sure I can even name 10. But there are a select few, such as Greg Turner of the newly opened Fringe, who are breaking the mold. When Turner, a Columbus inner-city native, found himself working at a grocery store with a bachelor’s degree in political science, he began questioning everything he thought he knew about himself. He was in the process coming out and realizing that law school was his parents’ dream and not his own. He started “living life on the fringe.” Quite literally. “I was going through a depression era and the idea of ‘living life on the fringe’ came out of that journey, because that’s what I felt like I had to do to be who I truly am,” Turner said. Turner took his love of fashion and an early dream to start his own business and founded Fringe, originally an

e-commerce website that’s become a full-fledged casual fashion boutique located at 1177 N High St in the Short North (fringedlife.com). He stocks a host of alternative fashions, a sort of cross between hipster chic and business casual realness. “I was really just trying to create a sense of happiness for myself,” Turner said. “Growing up closeted really suppressed my interests in fashion, but after I came out and really starting discovering who I was, it unlocked my creative self.” The popularity of Fringe’s e-commerce beginnings quickly spiraled into “pop-up shops,” a popular venture during the most recent recession that had artisans creating shopping compounds in empty storefronts. Turner also worked the festival circuit, building a brand through purely grassroots efforts. Soon he was pulling thousand-dollar days through just pop-ups and festivals. “The Fringe launch party in 2010 and my first Independents Day Festival were pinnacle moments,” Turner said. “What blew me away was that people actually did buy
things, they got my dream and understood what I was trying to create.” Turner moved Fringe into the Short North location late last year and had a light opening on Oct. 6, mostly featuring graphic tees and accessories. Expansion plans include a denim line and more women’s options. A grander grand opening is in the planning stages. “My approach to fashion isn’t rigid or hardcore,” he said. “I consider fashion an extension of our inner selves and how you express that on the outside. If you can wear anything confidently and look like you own it, to me that is true fashion.” Turner took a dream and a little gumption and made his own little place of paradise. He admits to not possessing any sort of traditional fashion or business training, yet he operates one of the city’s few black gay-owned establishments. “There were definitely a lot of challenges, but I had a lot of support from friends and family,” he said. “Columbus could become a major retail powerhouse if we just stuck together more as a retail community.”

by Thomas McClure of CMH Fashion Week photos by Cunningham Charlowe Photography Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself. - Oscar de la Renta The LBGT community represents diversity in all forms: boy/girl, brown/white, twink/bear, Regina George/Lindsay Lohan’s character (what was her name?). That’s what makes our community stand out in an accepting and positive light. Such a diverse world also comes with a rainbow of styles and personalities. No matter who you are, no matter which subgroup of the LGBT community you belong to, you have fashion. You have style. You have a story to tell. We’ve all heard the stereotyping when it comes to LGBT fashions. Lesbians like flannel, gay boys like high-end designers, bears like camouflage, twinks like platinum hair, and so on. As fun as it may be to joke about them, the majority of people I know in those categories don’t fit into those stereotypes, nor do they desire to. For those who do, more power to you. Be YOU. That’s what style is all about! Let’s talk about this amazing photo shoot that took place at the Garden Theater in the Short North. (If you haven’t been there to enjoy a Short North Stage production, you must go. The space and the shows are getting rave reviews. I even heard there was full frontal - male - in one recent show.) Emulating Annie Leibovitz’s famous Vanity Fair covers, where celebrities are shot (and later airbrushed) as a group while also portraying their individuality, we decided to showcase people and styles within our own community. For the session with one of Columbus’ world-renowned fashion photographers, Scott Cunningham of Cunningham Charlowe Photography, each person was asked to bring a favorite look that best portrayed their personality and style. Briden C Schueren brought out his self-designed shirts and ties. Jackie Vanderworth busted out her Chanel, while Caroline Woliver went for the simple and chic black dress. Something I noticed was how every person’s best fashion brought out his or her best selves. Never underestimate the power of fashion! This photo shoot not only showcases the diverse fashions of LGBT people, and everyone’s individual style, but also how their collective creativity forms one incredibly awesome community. Each person has a story to tell, and often you can get a glimpse of that story through someone’s fashion. Here’s what our models have to say...

The Lesbian Uniform by Teena Parker

I don’t think we can blame it on The L Word (like we can just about every other trend in lesbian culture), because not even Dawn Denbo or her lover Cindy would be caught dead in a pair of kneelength plaid shorts.
Amen! And I love her point: that no matter how we look on the outside, we’ll always be filled with rainbows and strap-ons on the inside. So you can maintain a butch look Now, don’t get me wrong. I adore butch women. And I’m without making Bermuda shorts the all for women feeling comfortable in their own skin (and, staple of your summer wardrobe. What by extension, their clothing). I’m also aware that there about suspenders? Or vests? An alterhasn’t been a mainstream female fashion model with native-lifestyle haircut? Give it a try! same-sex tendencies since Gia Carangi. It’s quite possible for a woman who loves women to look and feel like a But that doesn’t mean we have to settle for something woman who loves women without wearthat looks like it was rejected from Adam Sandler’s ing plaid Bermuda shorts and popping closet - or Justin Bieber’s for that matter. the collar of her polo shirt. Lesbians, on the whole -and, yes, I realize that I’m about to make an unfair, ridiculously broad generalization here - have championed some poor fashion choices in the past. Cases in point: the mullet. Combat boots. Anything flannel. Melissa Etheridge concert T-shirts.
Let’s face it. Being at a lesbian bar wearing the Lesbian Uniform is a lot like being at a Tegan and Sara concert wearing an “I Heart Tegan and Sara” T-shirt: It’s a bit redundant, isn’t it?
And I’m guilty of it too, folks. I admit it: I love my Tevas! And in 1995, you could’ve found me wearing all of the above simultaneously (minus the mullet, though I did have an embarrassingly bad haircut). But I left that look in the ’90s - where it belongs.
So please. I beg you. When the first winds of spring blow through Columbus later this month and you feel the urge to pull your summer clothing out of storage, please: Put down the Bermuda shorts and simply walk away. Just leave them behind. Forever. Don’t even donate them to the thrift store, either, for some poor, unsuspecting teenage lesbian to discover. Just throw them in the garbage bin. Immediately. Or, better yet, burn them.
Today, the phrase “Lesbian Chic” has become a somewhat controversial topic after a Style story last fall discussed the menswear-for-women trend going more mainstream and the fact that a plethora of female fashion models have come out of their well-appointed closets. In fact, more and more out and proud women are

Credits, Title Getting Longer for Gregg Araki’s White Bird in a Blizzard
Benedict Cumberbatch to Fill DiCaprio’s Shoes as Persecuted WWII Hero
Unlike filmmaker Gregg Araki’s most acclaimed film about troubled youth — the novel-based Mysterious Skin — his latest project is more of a secret from advance spoilers, almost a protest to Internet movie information glut.
It’s turning into Benedict Cumberbatch’s year at the movies.
What we’ve known up to this point is that its title was White Bird and it starred The Descendents’ Shailene Woodley as a teenage girl whose life is thrown out of control when her mother (Eva Green) disappears. Well, we’re still fresh out of details regarding the plot, but there are other developments. Its title has grown and is now called, evocatively enough, White Bird in a Blizzard. The cast has expanded, too, rounded out with Chris Meloni, Angela Bassett, Precious star Gabourey Sidibe, Glee’s Jacob Artist and Ugly Betty’s Mark Indelicato. And now for a reader’s poll: Who among you quit reading after seeing Meloni’s name and went off to obey a Pavlovian response involving old Oz DVDs? No judgments.
Channing Tatum and Sean Bean Are Ascending with the Wachowskis The crazy heart-on-its-sleeve sci-fi epic Cloud Atlas didn’t get the kind of love Andy and Lana Wachowski were looking for, but their latest project, Jupiter Ascending, is reported to be much more like their mega-successful Matrix trilogy (and that’s good for everyone’s bottom line in the long run, since Atlas made about 35 cents at the box office). Of course, that doesn’t mean anybody can adequately explain the new film’s plot, which involves genetic superbeings who’ve been bred with animal DNA and the bounty hunters whose job it is to track them. But no matter. The Wachowskis are never boring, as though their own genetics were incapable of something so routine. It can be about anything, really, and nobody will accuse them of slacking. The movie stars Channing Tatum, Sean Bean (as a Han Solo-esque rogue), Mila Kunis and Les Mis’ Eddie Redmayne in what is sure to be a head trip to Jupiter and back. That is, unless the characters never actually ascend to Jupiter.
Co-starring in The Hobbit trilogy, Star Trek Into Darkness and the film adaptation of August: Osage County will put the acclaimed, chameleonic British actor (pictured left) on multiplex screens stateside for the foreseeable future. And now he’s in talks to star in The Imitation Game as famed British World War II hero Alan Turing. Quick history lesson: Turing helped Allied forces win the war by cracking the German “Enigma” code; he was prosecuted in the 1950s for homosexuality, chose chemical castration over imprisonment, and later committed suicide. Originally planned as a vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio, Cumberbatch is the likely successor to play the man widely considered to be the father of the computer. Morten Tyldum will direct Graham Moore’s screenplay, and OK, yes, it’s another gay tragedy in the Brokeback Mountain and Milk vein, but it’s also the type of historically important story that all too often has been hidden. And you can bet it’ll be the kind of prestige project that gets the heavy Oscar push when it all finally comes to pass.
Lust For Life Digs Deeper into the Velvet Goldmine Director Todd Haynes’ trippy art-fantasia about an imaginary glam-rock past, Velvet Goldmine, was never meant to be a faithful portrayal of the glitter-bombed 1970s. His David Bowie wasn’t really Bowie and his Iggy Pop wasn’t really Iggy. A more historically accurate representation now falls to Lust For Life, the story of the friendship between the musicians, their collaboration on both Bowie’s Low album and Pop’s first two solo records and their years spent being cooler than everyone else in West Berlin. A script is ready from Robin French based on Paul Trynka’s Bowie book, Starman, and his Pop biography, Open Up and Bleed. Gabriel Range (Death of a President) is attached to direct. Now for the fun part: Who gets to play the two iconic musicians? Casting news coming soon...
We’ll all just have to wait and see. photo: Helga Esteb / Shutterstock.com

BROADWAY CLASSICS... and All That Jazz by Pete Lovering
The Associated Press once referred to her as “one of the best voices on Broadway.”
While Broadway music and jazz can certainly be categorized as authentically American, they aren’t exactly bursting with similarities. Sure, they might have more in common than, say, hip hop and new age music, but to lump “Bitches Brew” and “I Dreamed a Dream” into the same category would be a bit of a stretch. Broadway tunes are melodic and lyrical, usually a key part of a character’s story arc. Jazz has a looser and more unpredictable vibe. Broadway is usually led by one or more vocalists, while jazz is a collaborative effort between a group of musicians. Each has its own style of instrumentation as well: Jazz is percussive, usually with a steady pulse, while Broadway tunes generally have a more orchestral and symphonic sound.
When she isn’t performing on Broadway - or television for that matter, as she has been featured on several TV musical productions Gravitte is usually on the road with various companies and symphonies performing highlights from her diverse singing career. She has performed here with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra a number of times, but this will be her first appearance with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra.
Gravitte said the Big Band on Broadway songlist includes some of her favorites, such as Chicago’s “When You’re Good to Mama” and “Mr. Matrimony.” The latter is the signature tune from her Tony award-winning role in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway. Heart to Heartthrob: by Gregg Shapiro Tegan and Sara — the duo consisting of openly gay, Canadian twins Tegan and Sara Quin — has been evolving from singer/songwriter acoustics to fuller arrangements that draw on a variety of influences. Their latest disc, Heartthrob, is the culmination of those efforts. Heartthrob pulses with irresistible songs that incorporate trademarks of their style such as infectious melodies, vocal interplay and harmonies, and a distinctive lyric repetition. The songs “Closer” and “Drove Me Wild” are fullfledged club anthems, placing Tegan and Sara firmly in dance diva territory. Tegan and Sara will perform in Columbus on March 9 to a sold-out crowd at LC Pavilion. I spoke with Sara shortly after the release of their latest disc: Gregg Shapiro: The music video for “Closer” features you and Tegan acting out singing karaoke to the song. Have you ever watched someone sing a karaoke version of a Tegan and Sara song? Sara Quin: [Laughs] Sometimes I feel like that could be the description of what I’m doing with some of my own music. I’ve never been in a bar and seen anyone karaoke one of our songs. We always check out fan videos and people doing versions of our music. I think it’s incredibly flattering. I love karaoke, I love singing other people’s music. I think it’s a really wonderful tradition of infus-
ing your style and your ideas on somebody else’s music. The day that we go to a karaoke bar and they have a Tegan and Sara song on the playlist, I’ll be thrilled, really excited. GS: The “Closer” video features a variety of couples, including a few same-sex pairs. How important is it for you to be inclusive in that format? SQ: This is the first time that we purposely included a narrative involving other people and characters. Most of our videos are sort of abstract and we just focus on me and Tegan. ... But with this video we knew that we were going to rely a little bit more on a narrative, and when it became clear that there was going to be couples involved, it was the most important thing for us that there was going to be same-sex couples represented. I think we walk a fine line in our band where we are completely proud and comfortable and open about our sexuality. But we’re also very cognizant about the fact that we still live in a world where if things are not portrayed properly or in a respectful way they can suddenly take a crazy left turn. I would never want people to think that we’re exploiting anyone, straight or gay. I want to honor what I
An Interview with Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara
think is a really diverse fan base. Tegan and I have seen our band develop over some really important years in our society where being gay and being in a band doesn’t necessarily mean you are a gay band. It also doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re only going to have a gay audience. GS: I think the most heart-wrenching song on the disc is “Now I’m All Messed Up,” which contains the emotionally weighted line “Now I’m all messed up sick inside wondering where/Where you’re leaving your makeup.” What can you tell me about that song? SQ: It’s interesting, that was the first line that I wrote for the song. It was something I had scribbled down. It is a really intense and emotional song, and it started from one lyric. I wasn’t going through a breakup or a trauma of anything like that. I had started to date someone really significant in my life. It was starting to get serious. I was starting to write music for this record. I was thinking about the breakups that I had in the past and how traumatized I was by them. When you start to fall in love with someone, even when you’re happy, that can be the scariest time for introspection and writing. At least that’s my experience. When you’re deep in the shit and you’re sad and you
think there’s nothing worse that can happen, there’s nothing to lose. All you’re doing is reflecting. For me, being very happy and feeling like I was in a good place and I was falling in love with someone, I was utterly paralyzed by the idea that I could go through a breakup or someone cheating on me or leaving me. I had this idea of that line in my head. My girlfriend wears makeup. She wears mascara. I would wake up and there would be mascara on my pillowcases. I thought this would be the worst thing in the world, the idea that she would be with someone else, leaving her makeup in their bedroom. GS: Jack Antonoff, who co-wrote the song “How Come You Don’t Want Me?” with you and Tegan, had a good night at the Grammys with his band Fun., as did your fall 2012 tour-mates The Black Keys. What would it mean for you and Tegan to get some love from Grammy voters? SQ: I was delighted to see both Fun. and The Black Keys getting so much love at the Grammys. It’s really cool. Jack’s such a sweet guy. [Note: Tegan and Sara will return to Columbus in July for another LC Pavilion show as Fun.’s special guests.] ... I’ve never really subscribed to the idea that anyone can judge somebody’s art against somebody else’s. I struggle with the idea that one thing should be a winner over another. But I also think that there’s a part of me artistically and as an ambitious person (who feels that) recognition on that level would be, it would be totally a lie to say that it wouldn’t be significant [laughs] and be something very important to me.

Louis van Amstel wants to teach you the Samba, Cha Cha and Jive. With his new dance fitness program, LaBlast, you can learn all the same dances you see on Dancing with the Stars, where he has performed with celebrities for nine seasons. It’s ballroom-based but completely different because it’s partner-free. We met up with van Amstel while he was in town teaching his certification program to instructors at Diamond Dance in Gahanna. He’ll be back to teach LaBlast at the Arnold Sports Festival on March 1. Erin McCalla: Now is LaBlast a class like Zumba or…? Louis van Amstel: No, no, no. BV: I remember a really moving statement you made on the show, though... LVA: That was with Niecy Nash, week three, story week. We thought, let’s make it about the first interracial married couple. So that was our story. It wasn’t what it became, but that was our story. We were in rehearsal, and she breaks down and said, “I cannot imagine that I could not marry the love of my life.” She broke down, and I started getting choked up for her, and at the same time, I’m like, “Yeah, but I AM that person.” Then I started crying and we were both hugging each other, with the cameras on us. And I said, “Now you have to help me, so that I can get married if I choose to do so.” So it became about marriage equality but neither one said the word “gay” or “gay marriage” but everybody knew exactly what we were talking about. I have a feeling that Margaret [Cho] herself kind of turned her dance into that, but she didn’t tell me, because her demographic is gay. She makes everybody believe that she’s a lesbian, but she loves dick like no one else. BV: Have you ever watched Dance Moms? LVA: Yes. And Mark [Ballas], Derek [Hough], the three of us, have attacked that bitch [on Twitter] like you have no idea. This is such an insult to dance, such the wrong impression the dance world gives young mothers or parents in general. Because that is not how the dance world operates. That’s how she operates; that is not 1 percent of how it should be done. I think it is a disgrace. Absolute disgrace. And Mark and Derek and I let her know. And she says we are just jealous, saying that we are a part of a show, but we don’t have our own show. I’m like, “Bitch, we’re on the No. 1 show in the world; 35 countries have our show.”

Queer Goggles I am writing about a friend. By all appearances, he is straight. However, on more than one occasion, he has gotten drunk and tried to hook up with a transvestite or a person who could have been one. In one instance, he went to a club and was approached by a really masculine-seeming girl who proceeded to give him head. My friend, in his drunken state, reached into her pants and felt for a pussy only after she started giving him head. On a trip to Las Vegas, he drunkenly picked up someone who I was told looked like “Kevin Garnett in a wig” and was very obviously a man. He tried to take this person back to his hotel, but friends put a stop to it. I just received a message from a friend who is with him on a trip to Europe, who said that he just tried the same thing again with yet another manly looking transvestite type. Again, my friend was stopped before he did anything he might regret. I can understand if these cases happened with transvestites who looked like real women. It’s easy to fool someone when he’s drunk. However, the situations I have seen personally and have heard about all seem to indicate he is seeking out transvestites. Could he be harboring some gay or bisexual tendencies? I’ve never seen him act this way when sober. Or could he just have the world’s thickest pair of beer goggles? Cautious Lad Observing Developments When we speak of “beer goggles,” CLOD, we refer to someone too drunk to realize that he/she has accidentally picked up - or fucked the shit out of - a type that he/she would not normally/soberly find attractive. But I don’t think your friend is getting drunk again and again and going after this particular type again and again by accident. Once? Yes, that could be an accident. Twice? That could be a coincidence. But three times that you know of? Sorry, CLOD, your friend isn’t going after these types because he’s drunk. He’s getting drunk so he can go after these types. Before we go on, CLOD, a word about the particular term you use to describe your friend’s type: transvestite. That word? I don’t think it means what you think it means. A transgender woman is not a transvestite, and a transvestite is not a transgender woman. A trans woman is someone who was “coercively assigned male at birth,” as they say on Tumblr, but who now identifies and lives as female. A transgender woman may or may not have had sex-reassignment surgery - which means, of course,

by Dan Savage that a transgender woman could have a dick or she could have a pussy. “Transvestite” is an archaic term for “crossdresser” that no one uses anymore. Now, I don’t know what your friend is looking for in a sex partner, CLOD, but considering his observed pickup history (“a really masculine-seeming girl,” “Kevin Garnett in a wig,” “another manly looking transvestite type”), it’s possible that he’s not interested in either trans women or crossdressers. I did drag for nearly a decade, and there was a certain kind of guy who lurked around drag shows. By all appearances, these guys were straight. But they weren’t interested in women, they weren’t interested in boys who could pass, and they weren’t interested in trans women. They were interested in “girls” who were obviously men in drag. They were interested in guys like me: six foot eight in heels, big tits, 26-inch waist (thank you, waist cincher!), and a latex minidress. I was pretty - I’ll tweet out a few pictures to prove it - but I didn’t look like a woman, cis or trans, I looked like a great big fuckin’ drag queen. (My drag name? Helvetica Bold.) The queens I ran with called the guys who wanted to fuck us “panty chasers.” It was an odd choice, seeing as none of us actually wore panties. (Trans and cis women wear panties, CLOD; drag queens wear dance belts over tights.) I didn’t know at the time that there was an actual $20 term for guys who were into us: gynandromorphophiles, aka “lovers of males in the shape of females.” Some gynandromorphophiles are into crossdressers, some are into drag queens, and some are attracted to trans women. While some want partners who can pass, many gynandromorphophiles do not. They want the mix to be obvious. Give the kind of gynandromorphophile who chased after me and my friends in drag a choice between a “real woman” - cis or trans - and a guy who looks like “Kevin Garnett in a wig,” and he’ll choose Kevin Garnett every time. So back to your panty-chasing friend, CLOD. I’m pretty sure the reason you’ve never seen him “act this way when sober” is because booze provides him with the courage he needs before he picks up “Kevin Garnett in a wig” and the alibi he needs after. My advice: Stop cockin-frock-blocking your friend and let him know you accept him for who he is, and you may help him find the courage to accept himself before his liver gives out.
