Welcome to High Street Summertime Fun in the ‘Hoods!

From the Publisher Welcome back to High Street! Not that it ever really went anywhere, but as you know, High Street Neighborhoods became Live Local! Columbus for a few years. Now as we go into our 13th year of publishing, we decided to go back to our roots and give you the savings magazine you’ve loved for over a decade.

As former HSN publisher Aaron Leventhal says, “High Street is magical. Few American cities can boast 20 miles of diverse, historic neighborhoods with vibrant restaurants, shops and services. One of its unique qualities is the vast number of small owner-operated businesses offering quality products ranging from

music, antiques and herbs to Oriental rugs, flowers, tattoos and books.”

HSN is a celebration of our city that gives you the opportunity to try new restaurants, businesses and shops at a savings. Think of it as a Thank You for trying awesome things. Enjoy the city! Christopher Hayes Publisher

Franklinton is the first settlement in Franklin county, founded by Lucas Sullivant in 1797. The neighborhood is immediately west of Downtown and a portion of the community is nicknamed “The Bottoms” because it lies below the level of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. Franklinton is often described as “up and coming” but residents and fans say it’s arrived. Groups like the Franklinton Development Association and Franklinton Arts District are promoting redevelopment in the neighborhood in order to build an environment for creative and commercial exploration.

Donatos and its scrumptious thin crust was started in 1963 by Jim Grote on Thurman Avenue on the South Side with only $1,300. He built and owned the chain until 1999, when McDonald’s bought the company from him. McDonald’s took Donatos global, operating a few restaurants in Munich, Germany. Grote and his daughter, Jane Grote Abell, bought the company back in 2003 and reintroduced it as a family business. Company spokesman Tom Santor spoke with High Street Neighborhoods about one of central Ohio’s homegrown big businesses. Brock Flint: Why Donatos?

www.HighStreetNeighborhoods.com

Tom Santor: Actually, Donatos was the name of the existing pizzeria that Jim purchased when he was 19 years old. Before Jim purchased it, it was only open a couple evenings a week. Jim purchased the business and equipment, implemented his own recipes, but kept the original name, thinking that in the 1960s, Grote Pizza wasn’t the best possible name. The name “Donatos” is actually derived from the Latin verb dono donare, which translated means “to give, to bestow, to grant a gift.” Thus, Donatos is loosely translated “to give a good thing,” which is something that Donatos strives to do everyday. BF: If I ever wanted to get a Donatos pizza while outside Ohio, where would I look, and is Donatos looking to expand? TS: Donatos currently operates 157 restaurants in the following seven states: Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ala-

Summertime Yum in the ’Hoods! bama and Virginia. We are continuing to develop new franchise territories in existing states, as well as states contiguous with our current footprint. We have never been in the mode of growing simply for growth’s sake. Rather, we want to be sure that each and every new restaurant that we open is a true asset to the community that it serves and operates in accordance with our stated mission: “To promote goodwill through product and service, principles and people.” BF: Does Donatos have a preferred charity in Columbus? TS: Last year alone, Donatos provided more than $130,000 in monetary and in-kind donations to more than 600 nonprofits and charitable organizations across central Ohio. Although there are a number of high-profile causes that we partner with (the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research and Pelotonia, for example), we strive to be a great neighbor in all of our 62 central Ohio locations. The Grote family’s roots trace back to their first store on Thurman Avenue on Columbus’ South Side, and they remain actively committed to that area’s success. The most recent evidence of this was the $1 million donation that the family contributed to help a $3.2 million city plan to revive the Parsons Avenue corridor on the city’s South Side. BF: In 1999, McDonald’s purchased the company, and Jim and Jane repurchased it in 2003. Why? TS: Jim Grote had always wanted to grow Donatos and when McDonald’s HSNM

came calling in the late 1990s, it was an opportunity that few business owners get. McDonald’s was the largest restaurant company in the word and had more international restaurant experience than anyone. McDonald’s ex-

amined over 60 pizza concepts around the world and deemed Donatos to be the “gold standard” of the industry due to our famous pizza quality and taste and operating systems that were unmatched. After pursuing their diversification strategy for several years, McDonald’s returned to a focus on their core business. At this point, Jane approached Jim about buying the company back and returning to the company’s original focus of making a difference on every block that we do business on and sustaining the Donatos mission. ... By the end of 2003, Jim and Jane had put their plan together to buy back the company and McDonald’s worked with them on the financial arrangements.
