DOMINATION… What a powerful word ! Some may see it as vulgar and some might see it in a different light. Why Domination and why now? It’s a question I often ask myself. With this issue, I wanted to explore and dive deeper into the notion of Domination which for some reason, seems to be hidden and talked down on when in fact, there are so many different ways of looking at it! Many of us may feel shy or ashamed when talking about this notion but this VULKAN magazine and your bound to expect this! Time to learn and discover how one could dominate their world in various ways… It doesn’t always have to be represented in a sexual way but when it is… there is no shame in it! A change of power during sexual practices is healthy and should be accepted rather than discriminated against.To me, Domination could be interpreted in a simple way where you could start dominating your every thought and action to reach your life’s goals! Having the power to control your life and your life’s path is a choice I believe everyone should take on fearlessly. No matter the line of work you are in, why not be the best? Why not dominate it and your fears of going for it? Why steer clear of the conversation out of fear of conflict when it could be manifested in a good direction. As you flip through this issue, get ready to be Dominated and see domination in a different light.

After finding his calling apprenticing under some of the most renowned hairstylist in the industry, his career began to soar. A native east coaster, Doug Mengert has done hair in New York, New Jersey, Colorado and Los Angeles. He has worked on various projects from high fashion/editorial to beauty and commercial, working with brands like Fendi, Rodarte, Hanhey, L'Agence, MAC Cosmetics and fashion magazines like Elle, VOGUE, Harpers Bazaar, L'Officiel, Grazia among others. Doug has also worked with notable talent such as Megan Trainor, Leslie Mann, Linda Cardellini, Constance Wu, and more.

DEREK YUEN @dereksyuen HAIRSTYLIST Known for his effortless creative techniques and precision cutting, hairstylist Derek Yuen is making his mark in the beauty and entertainment industries. As an artist, what is most important to you when releasing a song? I think it's the lyrics. Many people can be comforted through music and have various thoughts through the lyrics, so that's why I think lyrics are the most important thing. 저는 가사라고 생각해요. 많은 분들이 음악을 통 해서 위로받고, 다양한 생각을 할 수 있게 하기 때 문에 가사가 가장 중요하다고 생각합니다. What would you say makes your style unique? I think it's your unique personality and self confidence. I think that they are revealed through your personal style. 자기가 가지고 있는 개성과 자신감이라고 생각 해요. 그걸 통해서 옷이 드러나는 것이라 생각해 요. When performing, how long does it take you to rehearse and nail down the full show? I need to rehearse for at least 3-4 days to perfect the show in my mind. 기본적으로 3-4일은 리허설을 해야, 완벽하게 제 가 생각하는 무대를 보여드릴 수 있는 것 같아요. 3-4일은 걸리는 것 같아요. If you had to pick one artist to represent the soundtrack of your life, who would it be and why? The singer I admire the most is Michael Jackson, and there are so many different messages in Michael Jackson's songs. They contain various kinds of humanitarian messages including environmental protection and love. What is it like being a K-Pop artist who is also making it Internationally? I'm still not sure how to describe… hmm… I have a thirsty heart. I still want to keep running and show you more. Because I have a lot of passion and love for my work, I am so happy and grateful to be loved by many people. It gives me joy, and it also gives me a sense of mission. What will I show you? What will I release next? It makes me worry, and on the other hand, I think it creates a good sense of pressure. 저는 아직 뭐랄까.. 흠…목마른 마음이에요. 아직 도 계속해서 달려나가고 싶고 더 많은 것들을 보 여드리고 싶고 일에 대한 열정과 사랑이 많기 때 문에, 많은 분들에게 사랑받는 게 너무 기쁘고 감 사하고 행복한 일이면서도 사명감도 생기는 것 같아요. 여러분들에게 어떤 모습을 보여드릴까 고민하게 되는, 그래서 한편으로는 좋은 부담감 이 생기는 것 같아요. From a group to playing solo, what are some lessons you learned over the last few years? Whatever we do, let's do our best! Let's do it right! This is how I felt since the group days. As much as I pour out my passion, I cherish each stage and opportunity. I've always been there with the mindset that I'll show you all my best. From the group stage to the solo stage, I perform with all of my heart, so the audience seems to recognize the passion and hard work. 저는 무엇을 하더라도 열심히 최선을 다하자 ! 제 대로 하자! 라는 그런 마음이 있었는데 그룹 때부 터 지금까지 쭉 가지고 있는 마음이거든요. 저에 게 주어진 일에 모든 열정을 받칠 만큼, 한 무대 한 무대를 소중하게 여기는 편이에요. 나의 모든 최선의 모습을, 최고의 모습을 보여드리자 라는 마음으로 늘 지내왔는데 그룹 때부터 솔로까지 그런 마음으로 무대를 하니까 많은 분들이 그 모 습을 알아봐주시는 것 같아요. While creating, what would you say is the most dominant instrument you use? I tend to use melodies a lot in my creations, so I think I use my voice a lot. Of course, I also want to learn various instruments, but when I create, I first record my voice as the base. Then, I produce accordingly. 제가 창작함에 있어서는 멜로디를 많이 쓰는 편 인데, 그렇다보니까 제 목소리를 많이 사용하게 되는 것 같아요. 물론 다양한 악기들을 배우고 싶 은 마음도 있는데, 창작할 때 저는 일단, 목소리를 미리 녹음하는 것 같아요. 그에 맞게 또 제작을 하 는 편이죠.

Speaking of “dominant,” when I say DOMINATION, what comes to mind? Music has been such a dominant part of my life that I can say that it is my life. It occupies my life in difficult times, in sad times, in good times, and in happy times. Because I listen to music in every stage of my life, I think music is the most dominant part of my life. 음악이 저의 인생이라고 말할 수 있을 만큼 음악 이 제 인생에 있어서 지배적인 부분을 차지하고 있죠. 힘들 때나 어려울 때나 슬플 때나 좋을 때 나 즐거울 때나. 행복할 때나 음악을 듣기 때문에 인생 속에서 음악이 가장 크게 지배적인 부분을 차지한다고 생각합니다. Share with us a story of a time you had to overcome an obstacle. What was it? How did you overcome it? In my case, I wasn't good at singing from the beginning, and I didn't learn it properly, so it was difficult for me to use my voice from a young age. I've had vocal cord nodules, and went through a period where I wondered if I could ever sing again. I used this time to focus and not give up. I was able to find my voice again because I did not give up. So I became who I am now. 저 같은 경우에는 처음부터 노래를 잘 하는 편이 아니었었고, 제대로 배웠던 것도 아니어서, 어렸 을 때부터 목소리를 사용하는 게 어려웠어요. 성 대결절도 걸렸었었고, 노래를 다시 부를 수 있을 까 하는 시간들도 겪었었는데 계속 포기하지 않 고 집중하는 시간이 필요하더라구요. 포기하지 않고 집중하니까 저의 목소리를 찾을 수 있게 되 었고 사용할 수 없었던 저의 목소리를 제대로 잘 활용할 수 있는 그런 상황들이 생겼죠. 그래서 지 금의 제가 되었습니다. In your opinion, what makes an artist “good”? I think my music and performance is influenced by the positive energy that I get from my fans, and everyone I work with. They influence me in a positive way. So it makes me want to communicate with the fans more and create good synergies with the crew. I think my success is mainly because of all the positive influence everyone has on me. 제가 저는 팬 분들에게나 사람들에게 또 함께 같 이 일하시는 모든 분들이 주시는 긍정적인 에너 지를 통해서 저의 음악이나 활동에 영향을 받는 것 같아요. 좋은 영향을 받는 것 같아요. 그래서 팬 여러분들과 더욱 소통하게 되고, 스텝 분들과 좋은 활동들을 만들어 나가게 되고 어떻게 보면 그게 다 그분들에게 받는 좋은 영향력이 있기 때 문에 그런 게 아닐까 하는 생각이 듭니다. 20

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? For more than entertainment? When I use social media, I think I use it as a place for fan meetings and non-face-to-face fan meetings. I'm curious of how the fans are doing, and the fans ask how I'm doing. The audience is curious of things like behind-the-scenes so I think it's being used as a place to meet and connect. 저는 소셜 미디어를 사용할 때 팬 미팅, 비대면 팬 미팅의 장소로 활용하는 것 같아요. 궁금하잖아 요? 팬 분들이 어떻게 지내는지, 또 팬 분들은 제 가 어떻게 지내는지, 어떤 모습으로, 비하인드 씬 같은 것들도 궁금해 하실 거니까, 그 곳에서 만나 면서 이야기하는 장소로 활용을 하는 것 같아요. Which ones of your songs hold an important place in your heart and why? I like the song Superwoman the most out of my songs. Superwoman is like my autobiography. In the song, included lyrics about overcoming difficult times, so whenever I listen to the song, I feel stronger and more alive. I feel like I get energized from listening to that song because it gives me the power to overcome any challenges. 저는 슈퍼우먼이라는 곡을 제 노래 중에서 가장 좋아하는데요, 제 곡 슈퍼우먼은 저의 자서전 같 은 곡이에요.제가 힘들고 어려울 때마다 그걸 뚫 고 이겨나가는 그런 내용의 가사를 슈퍼우먼 노 래 안에 담았는데 그 노래를 들을 때마다 힘이 나 고 생동감이 생기고 더 힘을 내서 어려운 부분들 을, 어렵게 생각했던 부분들을 패스하자! 하는 힘 이 생기기 때문에, 그 노래를 들으면서 에너지를 얻는 것 같아요. How does fashion fit into your life? Favorite accessory to always carry on you? Fashion is another way to express myself. Just like how I like express myself through dance, I think fashion is one of the best ways to express my personality or appearance. And my favorite accessory is earrings. What are some events you were part of that left a strong impact on you? Explain. The event that had the biggest impact on my career was when I visited Times Square during my past time as 2NE1. That was the first time a Korean girl group received the MTV Iggy Award at Times Square, so for me, that was the most memorable and glorious time. Most recently, I think being on stage at Coachella with our members was the biggest, most beautiful stage of my life. 저의 커리어에 있어서 가장 큰 영향을 남겼던 것 은, 투애니원으로서 활동했던 지난 시간들 속에 서 타임 스퀘어에 방문 했을 당시 인데요, 그 때 당시 그 첫 한국 걸그룹으로서 타임 스퀘어에 선 게, 엠티비 이기 상을 받은 것이 처음이었기 때문 에, 저에게는 그 때 가장 영광스러운 사건이었구 요, 최근에는 우리 멤버들과 함께 코첼라에 섰던 게 저의 인생에 있어서 가장 크고 아름다운 무대 였던 것 같아요. A World kept in the dark…never spoken about on mainstream media but yet practiced in the shadows influencing the world of fashion and celebrity. The word BDSM has blurred lines between pleasure and pain.It has been a practiced since ancient Mesopotamia which is one of the first known advanced human civilizations. Circa 3100 BC BDSM was recorded involving gods and goddesses finding sexual joy through the act of pain. Throughout history BDSM has been integrated in Ancient Greece and Rome to the Americas along with Christopher Columbus.

Given its rich culture, BDSM is being scrutinized in 2022. There is a social stigma attached to practicing BDSM. Living in a world full of hypocrisy , It's not surprising that BDSM is not accepted by the general crowd. General crowd referring in this case to all of those who cringe when hearing the word Dominance, submission, sadism and masochism. The fashion world find itself very accepting as it incorporated the world of BDSM into their runway collections. Balenciaga brought BDSM to the NY stock exchange showcasing their Spring summer 2023 collection where all models wore latex headgears and paired with Balenciaga-fied corporate wear. Following the footsteps of Mugler and McQueen fashion brands like Gucci , Givenchy to Christopher Kane and Y/ Projects brought out their kinky BDSM sides. Celebrities like the Kardashian , Cardi B , Beyonce, to name some, have repeatedly been inspired by BDSM. Fashion accepts and integrates BDSM and hopefully the World

The Pleasure Chest started in 1971 in New York, at the height of the sexual revolution. Founders Duane Colglazier and Bill Rifkin started out selling waterbeds, but found unexpected success in selling erotic novelties like mood lighting, cock rings and handcuffs. They decided to turn the store into a full fledged sex shop. The company’s first location, which opened in a 47” x 12’ long space in the West Village in 1971, challenged convention by refusing to block out the store windows with XXX, which was standard for any store with adult material. Founders Duane Colglazier and Bill Rifkin aimed to create a department store feel. “We treat our customers just as though they were walking into Gimbel’s to buy a table and chairs,” said Bill Rifkin in an interview in 1972. This simple principle continues to guide and set the Pleasure Chest apart today, now under the leadership of Duane’s nephew Brian Robinson. Pleasure Chest’s bold embrace of sexuality, particularly alternative sexualities, as a healthy part of life has garnered loyal fans along the way such as Joan Jett, who has been quoted saying she bought her leather ringed belt from the Pleasure Chest’s Los Angeles store, and gave it to Sid Vicious. The belt can be seen in many photos of them from the 70s. Pleasure Chest even inspired Queen, whose 1978 song “Let Me Entertain You” contains the lyrics: • • • •

From the 70’s on, the Pleasure Chest has been at the center of our culture’s ongoing sexual revolution. Just as Deep Throat made its mark on the world of porn, the Pleasure Chest opened its first location. As the celebrations of sexual freedom of the 70s were tempered by the brutal reality of the AIDS epidemic in the 80s, Pleasure Chest faced its own heartbreak at losing many of its leaders to the disease.

How do you go about making first timers feel safe and comfortable? Approaching a first-time guest who has never been in an adult boutique can be hard but once I break the ice with them, I like to make them feel comfortable by first acknowledging them, crack a smile and let them know I am there to help them. Most important is to give them their space and let them explore. It usually doesn't take long for them to start asking questions about products. I have been in adult retail for 23 years and through the years I have retained customers who come to see me because I make them feel comfortable. What does the training for the employees look like when dealing with the sale of sex toys? Training is extensive since there are always new products coming out. We have trainings with the toy companies so we can better understand the products when it comes to features. Before the pandemic we had training frequently. We are barely resuming training now since they lifted the mask mandate in West Hollywood. Which toy would you say is the most dominant one in the store? Tell us about yourself , your background and how did you became Temptress Tiny? I’m a 28 year old Puerto Rican queer woman born in Miami and raised in New York. I have been focused on my craft as a dominatrix since 18 years old. Growing up in the city I have always had a very aggressive personality, making me the leader in many situations. When I turned 18 I began working as a cam girl on MyFreeCams where I took on a dominant role working with pay pigs, slaves and different types of submissive people. My role as Temptress Tiny includes many responsibilities. Being attentive to my clients and submissive mental health, physical health along with their needs and desires. When you tell people about Temptress Tiny what is their reaction Most people are not surprised when they hear about my role as Temptress Tiny. Many have told me it was destined to happen as I’ve always been the one in charge while having a very nurturing energy. Those who are not aware of BDSM/kink may ask certain curious questions such as why we do it and how it’s done. Then there are the few people who do not have proper understanding, who try to shame me or those who serve me. Do you believe BDSM is still considered stigma among the general crowd? Can it crossover mainstream? I believe in our more recent years BDSM has become more accepted, but not always in ways that benefit the actual kink community.

Famous artists and brands have showcased more BDSM centered work such as fashion, art and even within music now, but there is still a lot of shame towards those who actually play and embrace various kinks and fetishes. Being a dominatrix is also linked in with me being a sexworker, which as we know, holds major stigma. This has made it difficult for many of us to hold a consistent platform to promote our services or lifestyle via social media since there are issues surrounding the accounts of SW’ers constantly being removed. Tell us about an experience which blew your mind. Over the last 10 years I have taken part in a ton of mind-blowing scenes. I’ve encountered many submissives who can take extreme pain through bondage and impact, but I’d have to say trampling one of my current submissives has been one of the top. They are able to withstand an immense amount of impact through stomping, kicking, punching and I’ve been in awe with the amount of bliss they express while experiencing such cruel, agonizing pain. What would you say is the most sex dominant piece you own? I own a wide variation of different bdsm toys. Different pieces for different ways of dominating my subs and clients. I’d have to say one of the most sex dominating pieces I own are chastity belts and cages. Controlling when they touch themselves or enjoy any sexual activity is definitely something I very much find pleasure in. Do you have a favorite practice you like to do when working with first timers? A lot of my first time clients are generally more intrigued by my shibari (rope play), wax play and fire play. Sensory play is a good choice to introduce kink with the intention of helping the client feel at ease and safe to release control. Shibari can be approached in a platonic sensual way or it can be sadistic, sexual and intense, so this gives each client the option to choose what type of headspace they’d like to be in throughout our session.

What advice would you give for people trying BDSM for the first time? And for experienced individuals? Something that everyone who’s new to BDSM should understand is that explicit, consensual consent is the forefront of all kink based power exchange dynamics. Advice would be to always ASK before assuming. Just because someone expresses they like pain, doesn’t mean they want to be hit randomly. Finding out what, when and how they like pain is very important. Same goes for attending a play party, always ask for consent to touch anyone! For those who are experienced, my advice is to be more accepting of those who’s kinks are different from yours and to have more diversity within our community spaces including LGBTQ+ folks and people of color. I decided to pursue a career as a dominatrix because I realized how in demand my services became the more I educated myself and perfected my craft. Witnessing my clients fall into such a vulnerable space with me was so liberating and profound. I had found one of my purposes in this life. I wanted to continue to experience this in a way that benefited me both mentally and financially. Mentorship and on-going education is vital in order to become a well versed professional. Getting to know other seasoned Mistresses and Masters along with attending kink munches and play parties. Become familiar with the community and be honest about your level of education when coming in contact with other kinksters. Visiting a dungeon can be exciting yet nerve-wrecking for most. Verbal negotiations are always had prior to any physical interactions in order to orchestrate safe and smooth scenes. There are many toys and activities to choose from, so generally we would decide on a few to incorporate into our session and discuss what type of feeling they are seeking to experience with me. Most people are wanting a cathartic release so I focus on creating a therapeutic space, where we can both explore our fantasies.

Tell us about yourself , your background and how did you became Girl JO? I generally just go by Jo— the girl was added in front because my male best fried was also named Joe so it got confusing for people if they yelled out our name in a room so we started going by girl Jo and boy Joe. Probably not as relevent to the conversation.I don’t have a name that I use within the scene I just go by Jo. As far as my background goes I am 41 years old and a synthetic organic chemist who specializes in oncology medicines. I have always been into the goth music scene since the early 90s, and the kink scene has always been on the periphery of it. Once I was 18 I dipped my toe in the waters and began to play with power exchange dynamics with my partner at the time who identified as a dom. I always knew I had submissive tendencies and we had an excellent dynamic that we built. I’ve gone in and out of the scene for awhile depending on partners but craving submission is always there in my brain. Tell us your role as Sub? My role as a sub depends entirely on my dominant. There are so many different types of subs— from pets, service subs, littles, slaves, etc. I identify mostly as just a submissive or impact bottom, perhaps with some switch tendencies that I am beginning to discover and explore (a switch is someone who is both dominant and submissive and can switch between roles) . I am currently not in a collared dynamic, nor am I “owned” by anyone so my role right now is to honor myself and know that my submission is a gift when the right dominant comes along. I do belong to a group— the Haus of Temptation and we

all have roles to represent the Haus and its values.The Haus throws it’s own events too. What does Submission means to you? Submission is the ultimate gift I can give someone. It is my pure trust and essentially me putting my life in your hands as many activities such as breath play can be dangerous.It allows me to be what I consider is the best version of myself. When I go into “sub space” (which can be defined many different ways but it’s often just a trance like state for me where everything feels perfect and balanced) it brings me so much relief and comfort. I have to be very dominant in my day to day life and career so being able to relinquish that power and let someone take over is very freeing for me. Why do you believe letting others dominate you is important for you? I believe it is important for me because it makes me feel good. It makes me feel worthy. It makes me feel like a bad ass, quite frankly. The bond that you form with a dominant— even if it is not someone who is a partner— is beautiful. The trust, the scenes you do, and the after care (how you take care of each other afterwards) is all very special. When being asked if you are a Dom or a Sub most people lean towards saying they are a Dom even though they are not , why do you believe there is a stigma in being a sub? This question is hilarious to me because I feel like most people I talk to are subs and everyone complains of a “top shortage”, but perhaps many people don’t want to be seen as weak because often submission is equated with weakness. I find that to be a misjudgment though— you have to be strong to be a submissive. There are a lot of

arguments that being a sub “isn’t feminist” or is “abuse” but that discourse does not interest me. If this is something I enjoy and want and my dominant is respecting my needs and limits there is nothing abusive happening. Also what is more feminist and empowering than doing what you want? I think that stigma mostly comes from people outside of the scene who just don’t understand what goes on, and I don’t participate in debating that discourse with anyone because people tend to have their minds already made up. Tell us about an experience which blew your mind? The experience that most blew my mind was the first time (and only time thus far) where I’ve done electroshock play where electricity conducting toys are used on you to stimulate nerves and cause sensations. It’s a very unique experience, and definitely something I never expected to enjoy as much as I did. Also, the first time that Temptress Tiny bound me in ropes was incredible. I have very little "Shibari" experience and the way she was able to tie me just made me feel so safe and close. It felt very comforting despite not being able to move. Tell us about the underground BDSM scene in Los Angeles The great thing about Los Angeles right now is that there are so many great events being run by femmes and queer bipoc. I personally prefer to only attend events run by femmes, and especially queer bipoc femmes. These individuals know what its like to experience cis het male dominated beds spaces and how they can feel unsafe (not all of them of course— that is a broad generalization), and take steps to make sure there is representation and consent. There are more of these events popping up in all kinds of spaces which is great for beginners who want to start learning about the scene beyond internet resources. It is refreshing to see femmes leading the way to create these new spaces that feel very safe and welcoming. I also feel that there is a lot of whitewashing of the kink scene, so its great to be in a city that is so culturally

diverse and see that representation in the events. How do you find/attract your Dominator? I think the key to attracting the right dominant is to first know yourself, know your likes and limits, and become the best sub version of yourself that you can be. This applies to finding any partner even outside of the kink scene in my opinion though. Many dominants are people you hire. Kink is not always sexual, though it is practiced between partners as well. I have done both. It’s easier to hire a professional dominant if you have something specific in mind that you want and they are an expert in it. For partners it often depends on luck as finding a kinky partner on apps or websites can be a living hell of unicorn hunters and fake dominants. Attending events and meeting like minded people in person has seemed to be the best course of action for many people. It really just depends. I know many people who have converted their seemingly vanilla partners into full blown ministers. There’s no one right way to do it. How and what are your limits being a sub? Every time I play I am learning more about my limits. When I do a scene with someone there’s always negotiations of what the limits are, but some limits are soft and throughout a scene a proper dominant will check in with you and see how you are doing. If you are feeling up to it you can decide to play with those soft limits a bit. Personally, I like impact play the most, but I do not like to be caned and that is a hard limit for me. There have been many things that were hard limits for me that I have softened on over time, but I still prefer to avoid any kind of impact play with a cane. What advice would you give for people trying to be a sub for the first time? My advice for anyone looking to begin their self discovery into submission would be to absolutely make sure you do alot of research, and when you think you’ve done enough research do some more. Do not just jump in and play with someone. Read as much as you can. Take an online

course (Haus of Temptation offers a great one, so does Lina Dune from Ask a Sub). Listen to podcasts. Read books — The New Bottoming book by Janet Hardy and Dossie Easton is a great place to start. Learn about yourself and what you like. What do you fantasize about and why do you think submission would feel good. You can’t find the right person to dominate you if you cannot properly communicate your wants, needs, and limits. Learning about what to expect from negotiations, a scene, after care, and the potential for sub drop is incredibly important. From there you can start to attend local events and experience what is going on and talk with like minded people. Most importantly learn how to properly vet people whether it’s through taking a course on vetting (many are offered these days) or asking around. You do not want to play with someone who is going to ignore your limits or aftercare needs. The most important advice is to be safe and have fun, and also prepare for things to go wrong or be funny. Not every scene is going to be perfect and that’s ok.

Swedish born and currently living in Los Angeles, Joakim Andreasson is the owner of CULTURE EDIT which is an umbrella company for a number of endeavors, and one of them being that they operate the Culture Edit and Tom of Finland Online Store and storefront that carries all things Tom of Finland and beyond in the sectors of fashion, design art, and adult goods. Sex is back and Joakim is here to share with us what his store offers, the empowerment it brings and more. Share with us more about the store’s history and how it came to be. My company manages all the licensing endeavors for the Tom of Finland Foundation, meaning anything that has Tom artwork goes through my hands and direction. Over the years, since 2013, we have done all kinds of collections from home decor and in the last few years we have been going into high fashion collaborations with brands that include JW Anderson, Honey Fucking Dijon and more. Over the years, in what ways has it continued to go “to the next level”? It has been a very organic process. When I started with the licensing program, it was very limited to calendars, t-shirts, there was a fragrance but we really took it to the next level proactively and with a lot of support from Finland, Tom of Finland’s home country as they finally recognized him as their cultural hero as opposed to that “guy who does sexy drawings that we can’t really speak of.” With their help and our efforts here in America and Europe, we have a much more solidified program which covers most categories. At what point did “domination” become trendy? Do you know by chance what was one of the first pieces sold? It’s also a trend to be dominated you know? So, I think it is a two way conversation and depends on who you ask. It’s like top or bottom. The store has been around for five years…We prepared everything throughout a few months and the first day was kind of nuts but the item that sold the most was a yellow t-shirt with a Tom drawing of a guy being pissed into his mouth.

Who runs the store today? Who runs the world? (laughs). I own it and I have an amazing team of guys that run the day-to-day operations and it’s a collaboration, not a hierarchy. Everyone finds their pieces of the puzzle and supports each other. What do you usually look for in clothing? Artistic integrity, longevity, no trends, something that can withstand the test of time. Tell us more about what the store means to you. It’s more through the reaction of others. What I sense when people come in is that they get this kind of utopic feeling and that it is the place for them, it caters nurturing expressions that they may not tap into in the day-to-day “straight” world. Being able to nurture individuality and creativity in that sense. In what ways is this store leading true change? I mean I wouldn't say we are a political store, it’;s much more organic in the sense that you connect with an item, it becomes yours and that is the tool we use for self-expression. Which work of art has had great success? In the store context, we sell sex toys the most. In what ways has this store motivated and empowered others to express themselves fully? Everyone expresses themselves best when they are at their most unique, I think. If you are trying to belong to a tribe you are turning into a more homogenous version of yourself but if you can tap into what makes you unique and shine like the start that you are, that is the best way to do it. What makes the brand stand out and unique? Depends where I am. I created a work cosmos where I just do whatever I want and I think that is unique.

When faced with adversity, what do you believe is the best way to handle the situation? To have people fall flat on their faces, meaning if you sort of let them ramble on and go deeper into the situation, a lot of times they end up looking like idiots and I win! What can people expect from Tom of Finland in the upcoming years? More amazingness across the board. There are two different dimensions of Tom when it comes to this conversation. I manage the commercial side (collaborations, products etc) and then the Foundation deals with exhibitions and cultural manifests. There are amazing ones coming up, one that just opened up in Venice and is sponsored by Diesel so in response,

there will be a Diesel fashion capsule and that exhibition will travel to Paris then Helsinki which will be the biggest one yet. What is your favorite piece of artwork of Tom of Finland? There is one drawing that has a very hot close up of a double penetration that is kind of sexy. I like it when he gets nitty gritty with certain erogenous subject matters and it’s not jsut about the full figure. Do you think sexual practices, talking about sex and practicing it in a unique way has become a mainstream culture? Clearly not because we are still facing adversity, at least in terms of being a member of the LGBTQ community and there are a lot of adversities we are still overcoming. It really boils down to sex and the issue at hand…anythign that re-

Having started painting at the age of 11, Hass moved to London at the age of 18 where he pursued his dreams in fine arts. Curating much knowledge an experience so young, there is no surprise that he is where he is today! Leading a “creative army where he tailors garments that put the woman forward rather than the garment itself,” he combines pieces from vintage old school techniques all the way to state of the art technology. Only working with the finest quality materials, Hassidriss is truly a beautiful, eccentric, and unique brand! Tell us more about the brand’s history and how it came to be. I started off as a Central Saint Martin student, very confused between the world of fine art and the world of fashion. I thought the only place they would meet was in fashion photography, but that changed very quickly when I created my first collection. I then opened my own couture house in Lebanon and interest shuffled quickly from a loud clear message of fashion advertising to a quiet secretive message of individuals during their fittings; the way they saw themselves, what they were trying to hide, what image they wanted to show others etc. In what ways did your vision for the style evolve? My vision in style evolved a lot technically, creating the perfect garment that can flatter the different body shapes and still have perfectly clean finishing. I had the opportunity to work with different types of women from around the globe with different body types and styles, all wanting to look thinner, taller and younger. 40

“Few years into my career, I realized that my main client became the camera. Not only is social media a bigger platform now rather than the physical social world, but clients also observe themselves more through pictures rather than the old mirror. So contouring my subject with colors and creating optical illusions became a major factor in any garment process. Going darker on the sides to elongate the figure, creating a traine to a fuller figure ‘meant for people to stand in front of her for pictures’ to make her look smaller in the final image etc. Many little tricks of the triad came to fruition.” What are your top trending pieces? What about your favorite piece? Since Covid, our main trending garment was our wedding dresses. However, I have to admit that lately, I have a little obsession with everything metallic (not sparkles).My favorite piece at the moment is a nude seethrough bodysuit that is all hand threaded. The hand threading itself looks like scarification, displaying psychedelic/Ancient Arabic medicinal patterns. It’s a piece that says so much and so little at the same time. Describe the Summer collection and that you hope it brings to those who wear it? My Summer collection is very earthy and very skin toned. It is a post corona, liberating, progressive, feminist, sexy and empowering collection. In your opinion, how have you dominated the world of fashion? I still have not dominated the world of fashion, but watch out! It’s going to happen! How does your brand stand out from others in the same category? What makes you unique? In the world of couture, most designers focus on making their client look rich and expensive. The princess aesthetic of very sparkly, voluminous dresses is mainly invading the catwalks. I personally find this approach outdated, misogynistic, and in many ways objectifies women and puts a limit to their dream, even as a fantasy. Our brand, on the other hand, focusses on looking humble, effortless, strong and empowering; It somewhat portrays the image of a warrior Goddess with super powers. 41

If you could be a piece of clothing, what would it be and why? If I were to be a piece of clothing, I would like to be corset. I will have your back, make sure you stand proud, cover your most vulnerable secrets, and help carry everything you have on your chest, no matter how heavy, using strong solid pillars (boning). Who is a designer you are inspired by? I obviously have a ton of respect for many designers, but there is no one in particular that inspires me. How do you find your power in acting and singing? The power I find in what I do is being able to create a product that moves people and affects them personally. I love that aspect of my job. Tell us more about your workout routine and any tips for our readers? I love to incorporate nature along with weight training. I start my day off with a prayer and then a hike. I follow that up with some protein and strength training. The ocean is also my happy place and I love to surf. What does 2022 look like for Max Ehrich? While performing, what would you say is your most dominant dance move/song? I’ve always loved singing since I can remember. I always knew somehow that it was exactly what I wanted to do my whole life. On a spiritual level, what do you feel you bring to the world? And what do you hope to gain from the world? I feel that spirituality is different for many people. For me, I was born Muslim and so I believe in the power of Islam. But I also believe in the power of me (my soul, my light and my love) as I believe we were all created to create.

How does your ethnical background help you with your music? My ethnical background doesn’t support music. Even though music and fashion are huge in my home country, in Senegal, many believe it to be "against the good", meaning it’s seen as a distraction for most. But for me, music is an art music is my way to freedom. What do you hope to accomplish in this lifetime? Growing up, I didn’t get to experience a loving childhood. The traumas I experienced during that time of my life made me look at every single thing and every single person differently. Even though I didn’t receive much love back then, I want to turn my energy and pain into a love language and connect the world with it. It’s possible to live in a loving world free of hate, and I feel that’s my mission.

Describe your musical and fashion style in a few words. I’m an undead gothic 2000s pop star sent from the past to change the future who loves Britney Spears as much as they love Nine Inch Nails. My style is a little goth, a little runway, and a lotta I don’t give a shit what’s cool or not.

Carlos Zaur jumped into the world of music and has been producing covers of songs ever since. Taking this as a road to his own music, the talented artist is truly on his path of light. Hoping to convey emotions in the most raw form, consistency and hard work are the key ingredients to making it in this world/ industry. Self-love is vital and Carlos Zaur continues to dive into that each day through his music, hard work, and passion. Why did you decide to jump into producing covers of songs? What is your process like? I honestly always saw covers as a road to my own music. I thought covering songs in a way true to myself could help me eventually be able to release my own music and create a following that already liked my way of creating music. I always picked a song I felt I could do justice to, and decided with my producers Gil Elguezabal and Lalo Bladinieres what the right direction for the song was, I never wanted to do a copy paste cover, I felt it was very important to create covers that were musically related to what I eventually wanted to create with my own music. It was an amazing journey. I learned a lot about the sound I wanted and what I wanted to project as an artist. As an artist, what do you believe your purpose is I would love to convey emotions in the realest, most heartfelt way in my songs. I think my purpose is hopefully inspiring and connecting with people that have been through similar hardships as me and maybe help us all realize we always have more things in common than differences.

How do you use your platform for more than just releasing content? I'm trying to work on having more personal content on social media to be more authentic to myself and not just portray who I want to “look like” as an artist. I try to talk about anything and everything that matters to me, social causes and my point of view. I also find value in posting content that is random and just funny and lighthearted. If you could go back in time to visit a certain artist, who would it be and why? I’d wanna meet Bob Marley. I just think he’s a wise man with true values based on the way he wrote his music and went about his life. Would love to learn from a goat like him. Describe your music to us and what you hope it makes your audience feel. Each song makes me feel differently. Honestly, I don’t really care what you feel from my music as long as you feel something. Share with us a time you made the encounter of a lifetime. Explain. The time I met Michael Jackson. Long story short I was in Las Vegas watching the David Copperfield show, second row right in the middle of the theater. All of the first row was empty which was weird since the whole place was sold out. The show starts and in every single theater door appears a bodyguard, and right in front of my seat a “woman” with a kid and a friend sits down. I couldn't tell who she was because it was dark and she was literally in front of me. I thought it was Cher, then there is this trick where David throws beach inflatable balloons to the audience. I decided not to look back but the “woman” in front of me does and all of a sudden I have

Michael Jacksons’ face 50cms from mine. I could not believe it, I was a fan. He had the most perfect skin I have seen in my life, doll skin. So when David took audience members to the stage nobody paid attention to him they just stared at Michael. During the show they played his songs and he would move his head and feet dancing to the music. When the show finished I shook his hand and told him i loved him lol he was extremely nice. Best advice for upcoming artists? Don't stop. Consistency, and I believe this career is a resistance one, whoever has the most patience is the one who I feel does it better. It's tough, get used to rejection and don't take it personally. How do you hope to make 2022 a memorable year? I want to embrace myself more, love myself more in every way and release my album!!!

Music. Such a broad term when you really think of it, no? What is music? Sound? Lyrics? A mix of it all? Pretty much. And with music comes themes and feelings which are so different for each artist, which makes meeting different ones unique experiences in themselves. Sk8 has recently released a song which we highly recommend you check out and he continues to rock his way to the top! When I say the word “domination,” what comes to mind? In what ways do you “dominate”? Lots comes to mind, but honestly I try to keep control over my life as much as possible, but that’s hard in the industry I’m in.

Share with us the earliest memory you have encountering music and how it made you feel. Who are some of the most influential people in your life? In what ways did they help shape who you are today? The earliest memory I have of diving into music would be when I was 14, I was like a sophomore in highschool so maybe 15, I went to BestBuy and bought the 30 or 40 pack of blank CD’s and brought them home. I put all the music on them individually, each one. I downloaded the songs onto them and tried to sell them at the school but I ended up just giving them all away cause no one wanted to buy my CD.

Being a musician, what would you say has been the most difficult obstacle you have overcome so far? As a musician the most difficult obstacle to overcome has just been believing in yourself. No matter how many accolades or gold records or anything you get you still sometimes have that little doubt. So the biggest is just to stay on the course and not give up. What is the most dominant theme in your song releases? Most dominant instrument? Your most dominant song? In my recent releases the most dominant instrument would probably be the drums. They usually are depending on the types of guitars but the drums really stand out and dominate the whole record.

There is always more room for women to have power and hold space and be a force in the tv/film industry or any industry! I am an African-American woman leading a hit television show written, directed and produced by the first black billionaire who owns the largest production studio in the world. Today, anything is possible. What do you believe is your most dominating characteristic when walking into a meeting? I believe my most dominating characteristic is that I move with intention. When I want something, I will get it. It may take a while but I am willing to do the work required and have the patience to see it through. I walk into any meeting with intention and purpose. Through your acting, what do you hope to accomplish? I plan on accomplishing a lot of things; from Broadway, to putting out my own music, to producing my own projects. I am excited for my future and my goal is longevity within industry.

"As a black woman alone, I face situations that may have me feeling defeated, but prayer, theraphy and controlling what I control refuel me."Maya Angelou dropped this gem on defeat. “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, and how you can still come out of it.” At what point did you feel yourself connected to your true power? At this point in my life, I feel like I am starting to tap in and am connecting to my true power. Dancer and artist, Timo Nunez, has our hearts here at Vulkan as he shared with us what it is like being a performer and more. Having always been drawn to singing/dancing from a very young age, there is no surprise that he is doing exactly what he was destined for. Through practice and dedication, he is able to accomplish so much and as he embraces his culture, he also pushes forward what makes him unique! Te quiero, Timo! As you step onto the stage, what do you believe dominates you? Takes full control over you? I feel so many things. I feel nervous that I never know what will happen, but also I feel prepared and that I am meant to be there. Sometimes I feel emotional because I am grateful and other times I feel like a bitch that wants to enjoy being fearless. As all these thoughts run through my head super fast, I take deep breaths, to quiet them all down, look up to heaven and think about my loved ones who have passed. I thank them for watching over me. Share with us your journey as an artist up until now. I was in the living room of my parents house when I was 4 years old. I was dancing and singing the show CATS and making everyone watch me perform. I knew I needed to dance. I began ballet when I was 7 hrs old and flamenco when I was 8. I was always dancing wherever I went. I danced at school during lunch time and I was bullied everyday from age 8 until I graduated high school. When I was younger I suffered a lot because on one hand I was very affected by the things people would say about me

because I wanted to be accepted and on the other hand I was stubborn and fought for what I loved. I continued to dance and never stopped. I was hired professionally for the first time when I was 12 and continued to have success as a flamenco dancer over the years. Secretly I also wanted to sing. I had a personal breakthrough after a tough relationship where I realized that this life was given to me as a gift and that I needed to do the things I felt passionate about with zero fear. Deep down inside, I knew that I had a strong urge to use my voice. I have devoted the last 3 years to creating the first male singer/flamenco dance act. I am a Spanish, Mexican, German artist born in California who has been studying in Spain my whole life but grew up at the beaches listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I love storytelling, drama, passion, pop culture and I strive to include all of the influences of my life in my performances. I am many things, a combination of the people who have helped me arrive at this moment. Favorite performance to date and why. I have so many special performance memories over the years. This month has been very fulfilling for me. I performed my new song, “Loco” at the opening for Debbie Allen and Shonda Rhimes on the same stage as Jennifer Hudson and Billy Porter. To see the faces of so many people that I admire in the industry, looking back at me with smiles, was so epic for me. But last week I performed with the incredible artist, super estrella Gloria Trevi at the Latin American Music Awards. To walk the carpet with her and interview with her was something I’ll never forget. We shared a special moment backstage before we performed and she noticed my necklace from my grandmother. I always pray to this necklace before I perform. To share that with her and then

perform our song La Recaída together felt amazing. I was feeding off of her energy the whole time. There is nothing like performing with Gloria. I am very blessed. How long does it take for you to master the skills of your craft? Do you have any tips/tricks? With everything, practice is essential. The time I put in reflects on the product. I like to think I have a healthy obsession; a love affair with my work. I respect the work, the process and the weight of what I’m doing. Every day I do something for my art. Every day. I wake up and go to sleep thinking about it. My advice is to find what you love so that it never feels like work. It sounds like bullshit but it’s true for me. In what ways does fashion play an important part in your life as well? Fashion is an extension of our identity. Music and dance without any attention on fashion is not a full expression in my opinion. Fashion reflects my persona- who I am. I have shot many fashion editorials that have felt like authentic moments for me. Although they tend to have an emphasis on flamenco, they also show androgyny, sexuality and freedom to share my life experience. I’m not faking it, I love it. Talk to us more about how you fully embrace your culture and who you are. Culture is what makes us each unique. No one is exactly like anyone else. I grew up listening to Mariachi, flamenco, pop, rap, musicals, Motown, classical music, and it all matters to me and to the art I want to make. Culture is about coming together to create something that people can connect with. Feel something for. Something special that we are all a part of.

What makes singing so special? In what ways does it feed your soul? I feel the most powerful when I’m singing. I’m someone that has a hard time opening up/speaking up, but through singing I somehow feel safe to say anything, it gives me a voice. I truly consider singing and making music (or any art) a form of alchemy. It allows you to take any emotions and transmute them into something new and beautiful. And then allows you to connect to others with it. The connection aspect of singing is the most important to me. It truly makes the soul feel whole. Gah I love music haha. At what moment did you know becoming an artist was your path? After my first vocal lesson. During that lesson it seriously felt like something shifted in my brain. I walked in just wanting to learn how to sing and I walked out absolutely hell bent on making music my career. It was the first time I attempted to take music seriously so I guess that just turned on a switch in my brain and absolutely nothing was going to turn it off. It was literally life changing. What can our readers and your fans expect in the next year? I may or may not be finalizing an EP currently that may or may not be coming out in the fall.

Your hairstyle and color make you stand out/ unique! Tell us more about it. Thank you! I grew up as a VERY shy person, like my everyday goal was just to blend in as much as I could. So now that I've finally worked through that & found myself, I NEVER want to go back to feeling so small. So my everyday goal now is to be viciously authentic and be ME loudly. Which involves having wild colored hair. It’s definitely a form of self-expression for me. Lucas Tamaio is the hair WIZARD behind all the styles/colors :) The most rebellious thing you have ever done? Honestly, probably pursue music. Not a SINGLE person in my personal life supported me/understood what I was doing for years. Many people told me to stop. And honestly, it didn’t make any sense for me to pursue music. My purpose in regards to my vocation is to participate in making art that connects with my community. Tell us more about your different projects and the different parts of yourself that they have reflected. I have played “Jan Hurst” in Sunrise In Heaven who is the daughter of a man in the military. She falls in love despite her fathers wish for her to not be with someone like himself. I played Kathy in Willy’s Wonderland who wants to escape her small town. In Frank and Penelope I played Penelope who has a dark past but overcomes the circumstances to which she was born and finds true love. I think that all of my characters have parts of

myself reflected in them. Ultimately I think those characteristics are perseverance, grit, determination, and a desire to overcome the circumstances they were born into. Growing up, what was the most dominant factor in your life that made you who you are today? Growing up, we didn’t have much. That has taught me to be a person who gives to others and values material items less than relationships. It has taught me that the simplest things that can make you happy in life cannot be bought. If you could co-star with anyone (dead or alive), who would it be and why? Casey Affleck because I love him and I think he’s the most underrated brilliant actor alive today. Of course, I’m a bit bias. Or maybe I’d pick Sam Shepard because he was not only an actor, but also a brilliant playwright who wrote some of my favorite plays. I’d also like to work with Tilda Swinton because she’s great, and the other night, when my Uber didn’t show up, she gave me a ride home. Define power and domination in your own terms. Real power is influence, and it increases as we offer more support to others. Being powerful is more about giving support than getting support. Service is the highest form of leadership and it creates the kind of influence that truly powerful people wield- the kind that resonates and uplifts. Real power is increased within a person simply by the choices they make, actions they take, and the thoughts they create.

Many of you may be familiar with artist Jnr Choi and for those of you who don’t… what better time than now to get to know him?! Rapper and artist, he was born in Gambia and moved to the UK where he was able to tap into his love for music. Known for his song TO THE MOON, there is a lot more coming from the talented artist and we are excited to see what he has in store for us next! As an artist, in what ways do you have the power to influence people in a positive way? I’d say the main source of influence is the music and the power to positively influence peoples moods. I’ve had tons of people tell me that my music has saved them, uplifted them or influenced their day. But also action. The world is full of negativity that people feed off of it but there are millions of people that filter that urge and look for the light. Me consistently doing things for the better has proven to inspire a lot of people to do and go after what they want and there’s a lot more positive influence to come. Do you have a story of a time you used your platform for the “greater good”?I There was a time I was due to release a song. Unfortunately a lot began to happen in Africa and their governments, & releasing this song during that time didn’t sit right with me so I promised to donate all of the profits of a song I was releasing towards various charities to help what was going on. What are the most dominant aspects of your character that you want to reflect through your music? The power to do whatever you like. The world is your oyster and you are the director of your own movie.

Have you found your muse? Explain. My muse is currently, and has always been myself to be honest. I bounce off my own energy and in regards to music It’s influenced my lifestyle. Champagne bottles and designer clothes. Describe to us what gets your heart pumping and feet going. Having goals to complete. I set new goals every day in lineup to the bigger goals ahead. So waking up and ticking off the smaller goals keeps me charged up. In what ways does music dominate you? How do you dominate it? When I’m in the studio it really takes over me. So much goes into the creative process. So much comes out of me and I tend to surprise myself once a solid product is ready to listen to. I dominate it by staying in control of my intentions. Focusing on the bigger picture once I’ve let myself go and using all the pieces to paint a masterpiece.

Growing up in a small town, there were never many individuals looking to pursue a music career but that did not stop Brady Tutton from finding his true calling. With the love and support of his family, he decided to give singing a shot and thank god he did! Pinpointing what you like is the ultimate first step in writing music, which seems so simple yet many forget! Discover more of the talented Brady Tutton in this exclusive interview for Vulkan and feel yourself getting inspired! How did you discover that music was your passion and that you wanted to pursue a career as an artist? To be honest, when I was younger the idea of being an artist seemed so out of reach, that I hadn’t considered it a possibility for me. I knew I had a good ear for arranging and harmonies, but at that time I couldn’t see how that could translate to a career. In a way, that worked out very well for me as it allowed me to explore different types of music, without the pressure of deciding which genres align with my own. Without a doubt, signing to a label so young expedited my path to where I am now, and showed me all the small ways artists go right and wrong. Growing up, in what ways did you express your unique self. Did you feel like you could? I grew up in a town called Shorewood, Wisconsin, which, although a very arts-centered town, was very small so there weren't many other people trying to pursue a music career. It's kind of a double-edged sword because it gives you perspective, and room to decide who you want to be sonically, but also makes the idea of having any success sound much less possible. Despite it not being very common where

we lived, my family was always supportive of me and what I wanted to do in life. I remember once, after living in LA for a while and working in music, I asked my mom if I should get a second job, and she told me, “If you get a job, you’ll be too tired to be creative when you get home.” What would you say is the most dominant object in your room? I have this little money tree on my dresser and it was one of the better purchases I have made for sure. I’m not sure why, but having plants makes the long nights feel less lonely, and improves the overall atmosphere. I have several plants now, but he was the og. I named him Ty Dolla tree. When writing a new song, what inspires you? If you make music or any type of art, it’s hard not to have an element of spirituality in your process. I wouldn’t consider myself religious, but there are many times when being open to ideas or thoughts that may come from somewhere or something you don’t fully understand is helpful. My whole life I’ve loved beautiful things, so much of my goal in music is simply to make something I find beautiful, whether it fits the billboard mold or not. I would also consider myself a maximalist in every sense of the word; If you have a nice melody, why not add strings, horns, a key change, and everything you can fit without it being annoying.

the artist. Doja Cat fits into the first category, but everything she makes feels genuine and new and fresh. For some artists that get as big as she did and so fast, it’s hard to see how they can evolve and where they can take their music next; I think she has a lot more years ahead of her to be on top, and there are so many different directions that she could go that would make sense. Best lesson/advice you have ever been given? There’s an interview with Chick Corea, where he talks about how the first and most basic step of making any form of art is knowing what you like. This sounds so simple but many people skip that step. What do you find beautiful? It can be much harder to answer than it seems at face value. When you spend time learning what you like and why you like it, creating things you like becomes a much less daunting task.

Who is an artist that is dominating the music industry in your opinion? There are a lot of artists that make songs that are perfect for right now, do very well, and make lots of money. And then some artists make songs that may not be universally loved in the same way but feel like a genuine representation of
