Sumayya Vally Spotlighted as one to watch on the TIME100 Next List, Sumayya is a force that is forging her path across the global scene. Hailing from Johannesburg, which she often cites as her biggest source of inspiration, the city is a recurring theme in her works and that of her experimental architectural firm Counterspace. Sumayya’s practice infuses history with structure, boldly reflected in her work on The Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development in Liberia. In 2020, Counterspace was appointed to design the 20th Serpentine Pavilion, making Sumayya the youngest architect to be commissioned for this honour. 2023 saw Sumayya ticking off another first when she started the year by directing and co-curating the inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale, where contemporary Muslim artists were celebrated alongside artefacts in a historic contribution to the industry. By June, she revealed her winning design for AsiatDarse Bridge in Belgium, a meeting spot for travellers that highlights stories of the past and inspires the future, which is set to begin construction in April 2024. With a vision that is rewriting narratives in the architectural world, we can’t help but feel Sumayya’s voice is current, curious, and taps into a deep sense of identity, ever present in her works and permeating the industry as she moves forward. www.counterspace-studio.com

Based in both South Africa and Switzerland, this multi-disciplinary powerhouse reaches beyond her homelands to reconsider the universal meaning and influence of a dwelling with her latest Matri-Archi(tecture) exhibition showing in Munich – Homeplace: A Love Letter. Gillian Holl Founder and Lead Architect, Veld Architects Joburg We first came across Gillian in 2015 when, during a residential issue, we admired what we thought was a rather exquisite home, which we later realised was her family home. Going on to publish the project (winner of the PIA Award for Architecture 2015), a spark immediately began to burn within us, and we’ve been keeping an eye on this unique and exciting leader ever since. Almost ten years down the line, Gillian continues as the driving force behind Veld Architects, a contemporary design firm with a difference that is setting the bar for sustainable design. Her work celebrates the fine balance between the simply natural and the technical, with projects like Ode to the Industrial Revolution, which uses regenerative and sustainable practices to take the industrial and make it modern and luxurious. Soil and Serenity – a tranquil home that creates a deep connection between human and landscape – is a prime example of environmental principles the industry needs more of. www.veldarchitects.co.za

24 Kelly de Gouveia Winner of the UCT Corobrik Student Architecture Awards 2023 Cape Town, Paris Crafting endurance and situated within the context of Cape Town’s East City, Kelly’s winning project aims to counteract expedient, rushed, and wasteful trends in urban development in the design proposal of a new 'Civic Stitch’ – a multi-purpose public facility which houses the new premises for the department of home affairs as its primary function. The design engages with notions of time, form, space, and memory to create a new locale for slow city life which stitches the fragmented civic realm between Cape Town’s City Centre and the scarred urban fabric of District Six. By harnessing time and slowness as design tools, the project re-establishes the concept of endurance as a more sustainable approach to architecture and urban development which values craftsmanship over standardisation, use value over exchange value, and long-term durability over short-term gratification.

To highlight her role as a pioneering female architect locally and globally, Kate was recognised with an invitation to give the Sophia Gray Memorial Lecture in 2013, an honour in the name of South Africa’s first female architect. Resurrecting N’Djamena Cathedral
ur Lady of Peace Cathedral in N'Djamena, Chad – a religious monument that endured a 40-year-long road to redemption, serving the Catholic community in Chad since 1965 – has been faithfully restored to honour its historical glory. Through an award-winning effort by MiTek South Africa (using 120 tonnes of light gauge steel), 2023 saw the reopening of a space filled with religious significance for the Chadian Catholic community.
Every year since 2017, the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) celebrates industry achievements, recognising the best in design, engineering, and construction across the steel industry, and elevating both the projects themselves and the people who make them possible. More importantly, the awards spotlight the positive impact the works contribute. In 2023, in the Light Steel Frame category, a truly special tale of perseverance and dedication to engineering was placed in the limelight: the Cathedral restoration.
Respecting a community Our Lady of Peace had served the Catholic community in Chad since 1965, but standing in a nation’s capital during a civil war puts any building in the line of fire sooner or later. After the country’s second civil war saw widespread damage across N'Djamena’s southwestern districts, the cathedral was largely destroyed and in need of revival.

Up to the challenge The Cathedral can’t be mentioned without noting its roof. The grand arch once evoked the wonder and splendour of classic religious architecture, but the damage done in 1980 stole that splendour. A temporary solution had used a flat double-pitch steel replacement, but didn’t do the building any justice. It was clear that for true restoration, the team had to return the original arched roof; 21 m high and 18.6 m wide at its base. The challenge at hand was putting this new roof on top of the unchanged structure, since the team needed to accommodate the site’s religious significance, which meant the existing wall structure, parabolic gable, and bell tower couldn’t be changed.
Up to the challenge, the MiTek team were tasked to design a replacement solution against the clock. Using Ultra-Span, this new design split the roof’s weight across 850 individual centres. A lightweight steel structure could then be anchored to a concrete ring beam, while a specialised shell design accounted for wind. Even with the revised design, the roof was still an impressive construction. It represented the singlebiggest use of steel on any MiTek South Africa project; 120 tonnes of light gauge. Logistics challenges meant the steel couldn’t come through Cameroon. Instead, it had to travel through Spain and via Algeria by road to reach Chad. With political instability mounting, overcoming these hurdles took confident project management. Once the steel finally arrived, frames could then be fabricated on site. The new roof’s shell design created intricate geometry around its back end and the carefully tight spacing of frames maintained a consistent span distance for roof purlins. Of course, ample insulation was needed to keep the finished building cool in Chad’s hot climate, and so, an advanced polyester membrane was hung underneath the new roof, also serving as a screen for projecting lights and patterns during church services.

A powerful new symbol of peace Notre-Dame de la Paix de N’Djamena Cathedral was formally reopened in April 2023. Religious and secular leaders gathered at the opening, including the Transitional President and representatives of many faiths, to witness its re-dedication. Six months later, SAISC recognised the project with 2023’s Light Steel Frame Award. Being celebrated by peers is always welcome, but this achievement represents so much more; it was the human reality and consideration behind the story that really won the vote of the judges. The city’s Catholic community once again has the place of worship that was intended for them. Success here proves that peace and healing are possible when we work together – a lesson not for only one nation, but for the whole world.
