ISUZU AND Spartan Motors Celebrate 30,000th N-Series Gasoline Truck Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc., distributor of America’s best-selling low-cab-forward trucks, announced today that the 30,000th gasoline-powered Isuzu N-Series truck has been produced at the Spartan Motors, Inc. facility in Charlotte, Michigan. The truck rolled off the line on Friday, June 10, 2016. “Last April, we announced that our partners at Spartan Motors had produced their 20,000th gas-powered Isuzu truck in only four years. Now, only a year later, we celebrate another 10,000 trucks produced,” said Shaun Skinner, president of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America. “The demand for gasoline-engine low-cab-forward trucks is growing, and we’re the only brand able to meet that need. But we couldn’t do it without the performance and reliability of our Isuzu N-Gas truck and the tremendous build quality of the finished product, thanks to Spartan.”

Assembly of Isuzu N-Series gas trucks began at Spartan in April 2011. Isuzu N-Series gas trucks are powered by a Vortec 6.0-liter small-block V8 engine that produces 297 horsepower at 4,300 rpm and generates 372 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. Tow Times Successfully Wraps Up Third Tow Summit Tow Times magazine recently successfully concluded its third annual Towing & Recovery Management Summit in St. Louis, which industry owners and operators attended to stay abreast of industry trends, continue to professionalize their businesses and network with other leaders. Towing leaders came from as far away as Canada to participate in the three-day event, held at the historic Union Station Hotel in downtown St. Louis, participating in seminars and roundtables conducted by experts in their fields. Where I live in Georgia, Allatoona Lake is a favorite, relaxing and busy spot for the locals, especially during a holiday weekend. Memorial Day weekend was finally here, and several outings had been planned for the grandchildren. We were anxious to watch them play in the lake for the first time. After we boarded our boat, we traveled to the farthest side of the lake to a shallow cove and dropped anchor. As preparations were being made to enter the water, we couldn’t help but notice a large, majestic eagle swarming above. Not sure what he was after, we decided to keep an eye on him. Several other boats had anchored close by. One even had a four-legged friend on board. Sporting his special life jacket, the brown terrier jumped into the water without any hesitation. His determined leap into the water assured me that he had done this before. The eagle took notice too. While everyone was still settling in, the eagle continued to watch all three of the boats from above. The family with the terrier kept watch on their special family member who seemed to thrive in 20

the water. The little dog swam from their boat over to the shoreline and started his trek back to the boat. We watched and commented that the eagle was definitely watching too. So we continued our watch over the grandchildren as they jumped into the water with their mother and grandmother. Secured by their life jackets, we were sure they would be okay but still needed to keep an eye on that eagle. Within a few minutes to our surprise, the eagle swooped down to catch an unsuspecting fish in his mouth and climbed high into the trees to devour his prey. It was a quick capture! That’s what an eagle does. However, was he satisfied? An eagle is really an amazing creature. Did you know that the eagle has the largest life span of its species and can live up to 70 years? An eagle is a predator. He’s usually not prey. The eyesight for an eagle is unsurpassed by any other creature because it can see a small mouse poking his head from inside a hole up to 2 miles away. An eagle has perfect vision. So obviously, the eagle had no problem

seeing this, small dog and my grandchildren in the water. No doubt, he was assessing, “Should I? Or, should I not?” Without alarming the children, all three boats signaled to keep watch over the children, the dog and the eagle. Everyone continued to have fun in the water. While watching the scene unfold, I couldn’t help but remember details of what an eagle experiences during its lifetime. I recalled that it can live up to 70 years of age. However, to reach that age the eagle must make a very hard decision. In its 40‘s, its long and flexible talons can no longer grab prey which serves as food. To an eagle, that’s a death sentence. On this particular holiday, we didn’t take the time to ask the eagle his age. However, by the way he was behaving; he didn’t have that problem. When an eagle turns 40, his long and sharp beak becomes bent while his “old-aged,” heavy wings become stuck to its’ “thick feathers”. This process makes efforts to fly very difficult. The eagle above us wasn’t having any problems flying. So he either wasn’t that old yet or had already been

through his “change”. When an eagle experiences “thick feathers” it has only 2 options. He must decide to die or go through a painful process of change which lasts 150 days. If he chooses to live, then he must choose change. The eagle must fly up to a mountain top and sit on his nest. The eagle knocks his beak against the rock until it plucks it out. The eagle must wait patiently for a new beak to grow back and then it will begin plucking out its’ talons. Whenever the talons have been reformed, the eagle starts plucking its’ “oldaged” feathers. After this process which lasts for 5 months is complete, the eagle once again takes a flight of rebirth and lives for another 30 years. Due to completion of this long, arduous process of change, the eagle has been granted more time. As I recalled the rebirth process an eagle endures, the magnificent creature

circling above Allatoona Lake fled to the trees tops with his catch of the day. At the same time, I noticed that the family had retrieved their spunky terrier from the water and were leaving the area. Not certain of the eagle’s next move, we did the same and found another location on the other side of the lake to continue our fun in the water. The kids didn’t know what really happened that afternoon. They thought we were changing locations. Like the eagle in the sky, sometimes change is a necessary part of life and sometimes it means going in a completely different direction from where we’ve been. Occasionally, in order to survive in this life, maintain our business, or our selfrespect, we have to start a change process that we’re not prepared to make. Sometimes it means getting rid of old memories, habits and other past traditions so we can free ourselves from past burdens and take advantage of the new

opportunities before us. Change just might be around the corner for us within the towing industry in order to experience a rebirth in our business. If this happens, always be ready and embrace good change when it does happen. Until next time.

I can remember growing up my father telling me to start saving for the future. Take a little bit of your pay check each month and save it. He would tell me I needed to prepare for the future. I never listened. I made sure I always had a nice car and other toys like boats and vacations. When I started my towing company it was hard to save in the beginning because you were always spending your money on something for the business. As the business grew my wife and I started to plan for the future. We knew that someday we would sell the business and 22

that money would be our retirement plan. When we thought the time was right to sell we invited a large company in to make us an offer. We were shocked when the offer came. Everyone thinks their company is worth more than it really is and we were no different. We turned down the offer, but they showed us what we had to do so we could get what we wanted when the time comes. The day finally came. I was fortunate to have two buyers fighting for my company at the same and I got the price I wanted. As we ran our companies here are a few things that kept us from saving:

1. SPENDING BEYOND OUR MEANS. It easy to spend when your company is doing well. The first step toward saving for retirement is to spend less than you make. I look at a lot of friends and family members and they are barely making it now that we are retired because they did not plan for the future. They thought they could live off social security only to find out that is not enough. Towing provided a good life style I only wish I would have saved more. 2. NO EMPLOYER HELP. When you are the owner of the company there is no one there to match your savings or con-

tribute to a 401k account. If you look at the world today few people are getting pay increases, and paying more for health insurance. You need to find a way to start saving now. 3. NO AUTOMATIC SAVINGS. Find a way to set up an account that automatically transfers money to some type of savings plan. Many people find that once they set up an automatic savings plan that puts a small portion of their income directly into a separate account, they never miss it, and the savings helps them build the future. 4. TOO MUCH DEBT. It’s even more difficult to save for the future when you are still paying off past purchases. This was one of the things we learned when we were selling our company. Pay off as much debt as possible. I taught a class on how to get out of debt, so I know there are things you can do to become debt

free. Remember the goal is to turn your company over to your kids, not your debt. 5. SAVINGS ISN’T A PRIORITY. When you are running a company you have many priorities, but saving is not one of them. Many current expenses and debts are prioritized above saving for retirement. It doesn’t matter how old you are saving for retirement is a priority that should start now. 6. NO EMERGENCY FUND. An emergency fund of cash outside your retirement account is essential to avoid dipping into your nest egg and paying additional taxes and fees. Most people don’t have additional funds to cover unexpected expenses when they hit. You don’t have to make a lot of money to have the ability to save, You just need to make it a priority and find a way to start saving. 7. FINANCIAL WINDFALLS. When the state gives you a fee increase, or you

get a large tax return take a small percentage and invest it in your future. retirement. Give yourself a retirement raise. Even a 1 or 2 percent increase can help grow your savings account significantly

Our plan was to sell the house at some point and use that money to pay for part of my retirement. The plan is working. We recently sold the house and down sized to our retirement home. As I look back now I would never have built the house I did and used some of that money to invest in my future. I’m not sorry I did some of the things I did because I can’t take them back. I have to make sure I learned from my mistakes and move forward. After talking to a financial planner I’m investing in my retirement and trying to avoid some of the pit falls I had in the past. Administration (FHWA) is currently reviewing the new standard to see if they will formally adopt it into federal regulations. Until the FHWA adopts it, we are still covered by the previous 2010 version of the standard. The new standard still has the same Class 1, 2, 3 and E that the tow industry has been using for years. What’s new is

the introduction of three garment types. • Type O: Designed for off-roadway use where there is no highway traffic or for temporary traffic control zones. An example of this would be parking lots. • Type R: Designed for occupational day or night visibility improvement for workers that are exposed to the roadway from highway rights of way, temporary

There are several regulatory changes in their early stages that will affect the towing industry if they are adopted as a final rule. These standards are The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) High Visibility Clothing standard and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry Level Driver Training standard.

ANSI/ISEA published an updated version of their High Visibility Clothing standard in February 2016. It combines the ANSI/ISEA 107 High Visibility Safety Apparel and the ANSI/ISEA 207 Public Safety Vest standards into one and introduces some new requirements on sizing, labeling and new garment types. traffic control areas or work/construction areas. Examples of use could include utility workers working on the shoulder of the road, traffic guards for schools or airline workers around planes. • Type P: Designed for occupational day or night visibility improvement for public safety personnel. This would cover the same areas as Type R but for fire, police and medical personnel. Here are a few other impactful changes to the standard: • Leg gaiters will be considered Class E compliant so long as the background and reflective material meets ANSI requirements. This will allow workers to pair a gaiter with a Class 2 top and the whole ensemble will be considered Class 3 compliant. It will allow greater flexibility for workers in choosing their workwear. • Type R garments can now be made in size Small. This will allow smaller sized workers to wear workwear that fits to the true shape of their body. • Garment labels must now designate whether or not the garment is flame resistant as well as show the garment type and class. This will make for easier and more consistent identification. In addition to the new ANSI standard, FMCSA has proposed a new rule in March 2016 to create mandatory training requirements for entrylevel operators of commercial motor vehicles. The agency will be gathering comments from the public and incorporating them prior to releasing the final rule. Once the final rule is published 30

there would be a three-year timeframe to come into compliance. The rule would improve safety by creating national training standards for entrylevel commercial drivers seeking a commercial driver’s license (CDL). This would affect drivers seeking a Class A CDL or Class B CDL as well as a passenger bus, school bus or hazardous material endorsement. IT would also affect someone seeking to reinstate his or her CDL. Exemptions would apply to those in certain occupations such as firefighters,

wheel time with a minimum of 7 hours of public road driving. The proposed rule also creates minimum qualifications standards for the trainers themselves. Training providers would need to provide adequate entrylevel training and training program administration as well as set instructor qualifications, provide training vehicles and create the training evaluations. Approved training organizations would be listed on a FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

We will need to wait and see whether these newly proposed regulations are approved.
