Ghost Sharks and the Southern Tow Expo and Beach Bash
darian@towprofessional.com
I was on an early, early morning run during our last visit to Orange Beach, AL to take care of details for our 2018 Southern Tow Expo and Beach August 10-12, and I got reminded of the cool ghost sharks in “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Next to the Marriot Springhill Suites, our host hotel, and in front of the entrance to The Wharf were two metal Blue-Marlin looking fish jutting out of the ground like synchronized swimmers. The first thing that came to mind were the ghost sharks from “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” and this place is really cool! With Summer heating up, so is Tow Professional magazine’s national trade show, “Southern Tow Expo and Beach Bash!” We are not hiding what we are trying to do—we want to get your feet in the sand in Orange Beach, AL August 10-12 to one of the newest and most unique trade shows in the towing industry. Kicking off the 2018 Southern Tow Expo and Beach Bash with a Deep-Sea Fishing Tournament on Thursday with awards for “Largest Fish,” “Smallest Fish,” and “Most Seasick!” No rest for the fish happy and the sun burnt as we will then that night host our 2nd Annual Tow Associational Dinner at Perdido Beach Resort with 15 state towing associations committed to attend with over 55 presidents, state officers and associational leaders joining first responders for a strategic and historical dialogue! The next morning, the show opens at 11:00 a.m. at the Orange Beach Event Center with a blast-of-a-time Friday night at our onsite Santander and TowMate Beach Bash in the parking lot of the Orange Beach Event center with a shrimp boil, drinks, food, and a live band free to of all our attendees. With industry-leading seminars, WreckMaster Training Level 2 & 3, live demos by Jerr-Dan and Custom Built and some of the best products offered in the towing industry, this will be a show you won’t want to miss. After the same great show on Saturday, everyone will be headed to TomTom night at the Flora-Bama where the party in Alabama and Florida comes together for multiple bands, food, and drinks! Ending our Show on Sunday, we will have a live TIMS event with a WreckMaster-certified instructor giving a play-by-play as local Orange Beach first responders lift a school bus off a car and rescue the dummy inside. To register for the event, go to www.southerntowexpo.com and book your rooms today! I can’t promise ghost sharks, but we will put you in front of top products in the towing industry at great prices at one of the most beautiful places on the planet! Grab your flip flops and sunscreen, and we look forward to seeing you in Orange Beach, August 10-12!

JERR-DAN CORPORATION DONATES CARRIER FOR AUCTION BENEFITTING SURVIVOR FUND
Jerr-Dan Corporation donated a tow truck carrier to the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum for its annual museum auction. The 2019 Freightliner M2 with a JerrDan 22-foot XLP flatbed has a retail value of upwards of $95,000. The tow truck is expected to be white with a blue body and boast a vinyl Survivor Fund logo. Additional truck details include: Rail lights Approach tip rollers Greased fittings Camlock 48-inch toolboxes with storage trays and marker lights The Jerr-Dan truck is scheduled to be auctioned Friday, September 14, during the annual Museum Weekend fund raising event with proceeds benefiting the museum’s Survivor Fund, which helps provide financial support to families of loved ones who have died in towing accidents, particularly roadside service to the public. “Jerr-Dan believes there are few professions that can match the heart and soul of a tow owner/operator. Day after day, night after night, these real-life road warriors rise to meet a world of challenges – the elements, passionate customers, aggressive competitors and the many documented dangers of driving – without hesitation or complaint, and without fail,” said the company, one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of tow 6
trucks and equipment. Last year, Jerr-Dan donated an MPL standard-duty wrecker mounted on a 2017 Ford F450 truck whose winning bidder was Joe Gagne of Abrams Towing, Ontario, Canada. Museum Weekend is an annual event that takes place during the Tennessee Tow Show, hosted by Tow Times magazine. “Jerr-Dan believes there are few professions that can match the heart and soul of a tow owner/operator. ” Additional Links Tow Times magazine and the Tennessee Tow Truck Association and scheduled this year for September 13 – 15 at the Chattanooga Convention Center. The auction is one of several activities designed to recognize towing industry professionals as well as raise funds for the towing museum and its affiliates such as the Survivor Fund. About 60 towing-related deaths occur each year in the United States, a high number compared with workplace fatalities among other first responders as well as other industries. “We are extremely appreciative of the generous donation from Jerr-Dan in providing this truck for our auction,” says Jeffrey Godwin, co-chair of the museum’s

Survivor Fund / Wall of the Fallen Committee. “The proceeds will be used to support the families of those killed in the line of service to the motoring public. Most recently, we have had a spike in the number tragedies. I’ve had to mail two checks to two families for deaths that occurred in the last week. Donations such as this allow us to continue this important work for the industry.” The towing museum is accepting donations for the auction until August 19, 2018, the deadline for those that wish to be included in printed donor recognition. All donors as well as the auction sponsor will be recognized by the emcee prior to the start of the auction. Miller Gives Back to Shriners Children’s Hospital Miller Industries WeTow Campaign Supports Children in Need and their Families.
Miller Industries Towing Equipment Inc. donates proceeds totaling over $10,000 to the Shriners Children’s Hospital. Shriners Children’s Hospitals provide specialized treatment for children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries, and other special healthcare needs. This donation came at
the close of the 2017 WeTow campaign hosted by Miller Industries. The WeTow campaign aimed to raise awareness of the towing community’s support for the many charities across our nation, as well as the good deeds towers provide within the communities they serve. Through the sale of custom tow
hook bracelets, Miller Industries chose to promote the awareness of six national organizations: Susan G. Koman, DAVDisabled American Veterans, The Miracle League, Shriners Children’s Hospital, International Towing Recovery Museum & Hall of Fame, and Wall of the Fallen Survivor Fund. The tow hook bracelets are available for purchase at all participating Miller Industries distributors, and the money raised from the sale of the bracelets made it possible for this donation. www.wetow.org www.millerind.com

Stayin’ Alive Thanks to TowMate “I've been using the Move Over Strobe up here in Alberta, Canada. I drive a medium-duty tow truck. Prior to having the Move Over Strobe I had little or no protection when preparing to haul motor-homes, cube vans, or tractor-trailers, as they size blocked the beacon lights on my tow truck. Knowing this is gives me an uneasy feeling when I’m laying under the vehicle, removing the drive shaft. There is a certainty that if the vehicle I'm under gets hit ... I'm going to die, or worse ... be disabled forever. Tonight I loaded a Uhaul on our equivalent to an Interstate Highway, using the Move Over Strobe for protection., Every vehicle moved over to the far lane AND slowed to 40 mph. The purpose of this email is to let you know that the theme song that runs in my head (and YouTube) while I'm using my Move Over Strobe is ’Stayin' Alive’ by the Bee Gees. It might be just the right sound track for advertizing and/or at trade shows. ... just sayin’. Thank you for the years of amazing products ... this one is my new favorite.” Ken Badry Tony's Towing Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada 10

What Really Drives Innovative Product Design? A Look at What Makes TowMate Tick
TowMate engineer Henry Miller programming the robotic pick and place machine to build circuit boards At TowMate, innovation is more than just a buzzword used to raise morale among its employees and clientele. It is deeply ingrained in the culture of the company, from the sub-assembly team to the engineering department to the robotics department to the main production floor and beyond. But why is it so? What drives this type of culture that results in products that are continually blazing the trail that others inevitably try to follow? To understand, first we must look at what it is to be innovative. Simply put, innovation is a new method, idea, product or otherwise, that pushes the envelope forward within its respective field. This could be anything from a new technology to a simple improvement on an existing 12
one. But what we really look to know is what catalyzes these types of leaps forward? The first thought that comes to mind for most is competition. But is this really the case? If that were so, nothing would ever move past its original form in many cases. While this certainly plays a role, the truth is that innovation is driven by Passion, Expertise, Experience, and Feedback from end users of the product or technology (P.E.E.F.). When a leader of an organization is driven by these elements and embraces them, all of those around them begin to catch on and embrace them as well. In the case of TowMate, Bryan Anderson (owner) invented wireless tow lights in the mid-
Tow Professional | Volume 7 • Issue 5 | www.towprofessional.com
80’s and grew the business by way of living by those very tenants. As a result, TowMate continues to grow and adapt along with the workforce behind it. When LED’s became available and affordable to integrate into products without driving up the costs of finished goods too high to be practical, TowMate was the first wireless lighting manufacturer to integrate them into their products. This was the case even considering there was no ‘competition’ at the time. The same goes for more advanced power supplies such as Nickel metal-hydride and LithiumIon batteries. TowMate has adapted with the times and integrated long lasting and easily maintained Lithium Ion battery packs that snap into place in the fashion of a cordless drill into many of their newer models. In their continued efforts to increase safety on the roadside, TowMate has even gone so far as to manufacture LED light strips that can be added to many of their products that assist in moving traffic over with their arrows or highintensity strobes patterns. These ideas did not come from just one man. They were the result of a healthy organizational culture that has been inspired and cultivated over the years stemming from an outlook on business and how things should be that is both praise-worthy as well as increasingly rare these days. Originality, honest business practices, doing things to the best of one’s ability without cutting corners, and promoting US manufacturing are all elements of the TowMate business model. However, a collective of innovative minds embracing P.E.E.F. is the driving force behind the advancements in product design that you see today.

New 5K in Chattanooga to Support Fallen Tow Operators The first annual Run for the Fund will be held Sunday, September 16, 2018.
Motorists rely on towing and road service operators to be rescued when stranded. These men and women work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to keep our roadways clear and traffic moving. The job of the towing operator is one of the most dangerous professions in the world. The men and women work perilously close to high-speed traffic and routinely face the dangers of impaired, inattentive and distracted drivers. The towing industry loses approximately 60 operators annually — a number that is staggering to comprehend. Through fund-raising efforts and the generosity of corporations, individuals and industry associations, the International Towing and Recovery Hall of 14
Fame and Museum’s Survivor Fund was launched in 2007 to provide limited financial support to families who lost a loved one in the line of service (father, mother, son, etc.). The museum is located on Broad Street in Chattanooga, considered the birthplace of the towing industry. The Survivor Fund has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to families since 2007. The initial benefit payout was $500 and recently the board raised it to $7,500 for members of the museum and $5,000 for non-members. The fund’s board evaluates the benefit each year. “The board meets annually to evaluate the status of the fund using a fiscal responsibility formula and to set the benefit level for the coming year,” says

Custer Products on the Move! A Tow Industry Leader in Lighting Prepares to Upgrade to Larger Facility
Ohio-based Custer Products Limited recently announced the company is relocating to a larger facility in Massillon, Ohio. “The move gives us ample room to continue to manufacture and grow our Lite-It Wireless line,” stated Brad Custer. “We had record sales of our light bars in 2017, and 2018 is even better than last year. The towing industry is really embracing our products, and for that, we’re grateful.” The company expects to complete its move in late August. Custer is also taking advantage of their relocation by offering deep discounts on many of its lighting and lighting-related products. “We’d rather sell it than move it,’ said Custer. “I can’t imagine a better time to get discounted prices on our quality lights.”

Custer’s credo is straight-forward: Custer believes its first responsibility is to the tow drivers, truckers, farmers, boaters, recreational vehicle and off-road enthusiasts, distributors and manufacturers who use and sell their products. In meeting their needs, everything Custer does is of high quality. Custer constantly strives to reduce costs in order to maintain reasonable prices. Customer’s orders are serviced promptly and accurately. Insightful talk By D an Mes s ina
How Government Affects Our Business Several years ago, I wrote an article about healthcare or Obama Care as we know it today, and how it would affect our business. I would never have guessed that healthcare would be such a big challenge. Up until now, most of the small businesses never had to offer any type of healthcare to its employees. If we did, the employee would have to pay a portion of it. When I ran my business, for the longest time, I never offered any type of healthcare benefits. As I built my business, I wanted to give my employees the opportunity to have healthcare benefits, so I offered them a policy where they would pay a part of it, and I would pay a part of it. Out of 36 employees, only 5 wanted the benefit. Then the government comes in and makes it mandatory that each employee has insurance. Every two years in the state of Texas, the government tries to pass laws that will affect our business. Last year the trucking lobbyists tried to set rates for tows in the state of Texas. They did not know our expenses or anything about our business. They just wanted a lower rate for them to pay when they 20
get towed. There were some tow companies gouging on the price of a tow, and it’s because of these few companies that every legislative year we are faced with new laws that affect our business. Our association, Southwest Tow Operators, has a lobbyist we pay annually to watch for new laws that affect the towing industry. Many associations can’t afford a lobbyist to help them, and they must fight this battle alone. Your state association tries to watch for changes in the law that will cost you money, but the budget of most associations can’t do this alone. As a result, their business bottomline takes a hit. As tow company owners, we are faced with: 1. High cost of gas 2. Increasing truck prices 3. Employees wanting more money 4. Rising cost of insurance (if you can find it) 5. Rising cost of equipment and training for your staff Yet, our rates manage to stay the same. Tow company owners are not good at following local legislation, and
Tow Professional | Volume 7 • Issue 5 | www.towprofessional.com
they don’t belong to their state associations, so they accept whatever the state says their business should be. Several years ago, the state of Texas decided to give the tow companies a raise, and they hired an outside firm to do research and come up with a new IM rate. The company doing the research did not get help from the industry, and they used their own formula to determine the increase. When it was time for them to make a presentation to the industry, there were about 40 tow companies at the presentation. There were about 15 state officials at this meeting anxious to see what data they had paid for from this research company. The research firm was not 10 minutes into the presentation, and the 40 tow companies started to protest. The tow companies made several points that the research firm never considered. It got real ugly, and the state officials stopped the presentation. The research firm used no industry experience, and their assumptions were totally wrong. The state dismissed the research firm not even allowing them to finish their presentation, and then the state approached the study by getting all their information from the industry. A new rate was established for IM tows that was fair to the industry, and the tow companies ended up with a fair rate. What would have happened if the 40
tow companies were not there to complain? We would have a new tow rate that does not cover expenses. In most states, this does not happen. Most big companies have lobbyist that lobby against the tow company. You have insurance industry, the trucking industry, and the consumer that gets their politicians to lobby for them to get their vote. January of 2019 will start a new legislative period. It will run until June of 2019. Any laws presented will be voted on and be effective September of 2019. Between January and June, our association will make no less than 15 trips to Austin to discuss new laws with our state reps. We will ask our reps to carry bills for us or change bills that will hurt us. We will have multiple companies write checks to their local reps for support on bills we need stopped or passed. Here are a few bills that would have cost us dearly last legislative period had we not fought for changes: 1. No storage to be collected until AFTER vehicle has been stored for 24 hours. In Texas, 80% of the vehicles are picked up in the first 24 hours. This would have been a huge revenue loss. 2. Property manager must be present for all private-property tows. This would have killed private-property towing in Texas. 3. Trucking association wants to cap/regulate towing and recovery fees. They set the price not knowing what our expenses are. 4. Tow company must pay double the tow fee to the state if we lose a tow hearing. No penalty for the person losing a tow hearing-only the tow company. Every year, we face at least 25 bills that are directly related to the towing industry. During the last two legislative periods, our association had a legislative day at the capital. We would get 50 tow companies to meet in Austin, put on matching T-shirts, and march through the capital. We would visit at least 400 legislators and give them a handout asking them to support the towing industry. We would hold a reception that evening at a
bar and serve them food and ask for their support. This helps our industry every legislative year, but the tow company involvement is getting less and less every year. Small companies just don’t understand the impact of a legislative year. We have a strong association in Texas,
and we can survive, but it’s getting harder and harder. I know that most states have small associations and just roll with the punches doing whatever the state tells them. If we are going to survive, we better learn to stand together or end up letting our legislators run us out of business? N

Charging Forward in the Gig Economy By Ethan Galloway, Omadi Inc. Whether you are an independent operator or a fleet, the gig economy offers opportunity for the modern tow company. The gig economy isn’t about individuals acting alone and taking business away. It’s about partners coming together. It’s about “the many” being more powerful than “the few.” So, what is the “gig economy?” The gig economy is matching consumers to providers for on-demand services. A recent study by Intuit predicted that “by 2020, 40 percent of American workers would be independent contractors” (https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/gig-economy). Don’t be afraid of the gig economy. It’s actually here to save you. I was reminded of this as I read the writing of Brad McIntosh from Towing Management Group LLC. He talks about how tow companies need to “adapt or get left behind.” This is something we at Omadi have come to learn more than most. Most, if not all, of our success has come from our willingness to adapt. We launched in 2013 as a solution for parking enforcement and have adapted to be a complete towing management platform, including helping tow operations 52
source and receive digital tow requests or services. In that adaptation, we’ve seen the power of partnerships—the power of coming together. Most recently we’ve seen the next wave of the gig economy in a partnership amongst tow companies to deliver and install new car batteries. Embracing the gig economy means tow companies no longer must risk getting crushed by the burden of upfront purchases and maintaining a hefty inventory of batteries, often dedicating vehicles exclusively to store and deliver batteries (think AAA). Joining the Trust BatteryTrust is a program lead by Exide Technologies, an Atlanta-based company that’s been manufacturing batteries for more than 100 years (proving that sometimes it’s the old dog that TEACHES the new tricks). The program offers car-battery delivery and installation brought directly to the consumer through an online purchase and a battalion of towtruck operators. Towers have an additional revenue stream, and consumers reap the benefits

too by having batteries delivered and installed by professionals. That’s the beauty of the gig economy: everyone wins--less wasted time for the consumer and less wasted time for the provider. How does it work? Consumers can choose to have a battery delivered or installed with a standard or lifetime warranty. Any option gets a two-hour window install guarantee and can be ordered immediately or scheduled anytime over the next seven days. Whether choosing delivery or installation, the basic battery packs a ton of power and includes a 40-month manufacturer warranty. That warranty offers the consumer two jump starts at no charge during the 40 months for any battery-related
Preventative, Battery Terminal Service Kit, Battery Terminal Spreader and Cleaner, Magnetic Fender Cover, Magnetic Telescoping Pick-up Tool, Ratchet and Socket Set. As a bonus, the bag even includes a sticker, so you can rep the program. One of the most important requirements to be a BatteryTrust qualified service provider is getting your drivers certified by Mobile Battery Solutions (MBS) on how to safely and properly change a battery. MBS covers everything from how to safely transport a new battery to the details of installing batteries on specific make/models, and best practices on customer service (specifically how to be professional). MBS offers convenient online training and certification, as well as onsite support for larger fleets. Aside from being required for BatteryTrust jobs, certified providers get immediate access to the MBS classic program for selling batteries. issue. There is also a lifetime-warranty option which is provided by Foreverstartbattery.com and includes an environmentally safe corrosion protection that prevents battery drain, improves electrical flow (to increase start ability), helps protect the battery from environmental elements, and prevents corrosion for the life of the battery. This option extends the battery warranty to as long as you own the vehicle. What’s Different for me as a Service Provider? BatteryTrust disrupts this traditional model and allows providers to leverage their existing fleet for battery service with little to no inventory. The program uses retail partners to store batteries such that any order for service has a storage partner nearby, where a provider can pick up a battery while enroute to the customer. The gig economy is competitive and quickly growing. Too often, however, in these relationships, the service provider is left with little pay to run and grow their business. Success for these services not only needs to make financial sense, but also requires seamless cooperation between service providers and suppliers. This interchange can only be accomplished using the right technology.
BatteryTrust understands the need for appropriate pay to providers, and is leveraging the technology provided by Omadi, Inc. to match battery sales for delivery and installation with providers qualified to do the work. Pilots of the technology with qualified providers in select markets have given BatteryTrust the ability to guarantee consumers that every purchase can be delivered in two hours or less. Each provider receives access to the Omadi App which is used to share assignments for jobs provided by BatteryTrust. The app helps service providers keep track of scheduled and on-demand calls. It is used to record the service experience by capturing information like status, location, and outcome of each job. The app is available on mobile devices or through a computer’s web browser. The web login even allows service providers to dispatch and track each person certified to install batteries. In addition to the provided technology, Omadi has arranged to deliver new tool bags packed full of everything you need to install a battery at no cost to the service provider! The bags, sponsored by BatteryTrust, will help to create a consistent and high-quality customer experience. The bags offer an Auto Memory Saver, Battery Brush, Battery Corrosion
How to Get Involved For those interested in leveraging the BatteryTrust program to diversify their own business, here is how to get involved: 1. Contact Omadi at 801-800-8250 or info@omadi.com to find out how to start using the app and get certified to receive calls. 2. Train and certify all participating drivers before the BatteryTrust program is live in your market with the MBS online training found at mbssolutions.com. As batteries start flowing through your business, you too can “charge forward” with Exide, MBS, and Omadi to expand and diversify your business. N
