Towers are Good Folks! We had just arrived on Tuesday before our 2018 Southern Tow Expo and Beach Bash, and I decided to go on a run. I was five minutes out of where we were staying there in Orange Beach when I saw a tow truck on the opposite side of the road about to pull out onto the main highway. I flagged the guy down and invited him to our trade show that was about happen in a few days just around the corner at the Orange Beach Event Center. The 22-year old tower turned his truck off, got out of it, and hopped onto the back of the flatbed carrier he was driving. He then started telling me about what it was like to be a tower. He said he took calls 24/7. He said, “I will take a call at 2:00 o’clock in the morning. I don’t care because there are people out there that need help. I hook up cars in 112degree heat on my back in heavy traffic with trucks and cars flying past my leg.” After he said that, I asked him, “Why do you do it?” What he said next caught me totally off guard, and I think I will put it in my “How to Handle Life” toolbox. The young tower said, “When I was in the 9th grade, I went to football camp.” (I was wondering what does football camp have to do with towing?) He continued saying, “Nick Sabin was my coach. Coach Sabin said, ‘True victory comes after we go through adversity. You can have that victory, but you must put in the discipline, effort, commitment, and time required. After you do that, then you can feel proud of what you have done.’ It was cool because I got to shake his hand, and I have a picture to prove it.” I was impressed that this guy in front of me was impacted by a ninth-grade football camp coach and was living out daily what he had learned from him. This tower was good people wanting to help others and willing make his life happen even if it was at 2:00 a.m. After being involved with the towing industry these two years, seeing the towers listed on the Wall of the Fallen, who die every year in the line of duty, and hearing this driver’s story about what his life was like with vehicles whizzing by and not moving over, 112degree weather, and calls at all hours of the night, I have a clear view. I see towers as good folks—they are the ones that show up at 2:00 a.m. to help us when everyone else is asleep. Thanks to all the men and women who risk their lives daily to help those “people (us) out there that need help” and thanks to all the companies that empower them to do so! After a great experience at Southern Tow Expo, our focus is back to the products that make a tower’s life easier. In this issue, we are featuring wheel lifts, so we will be hearing from Dynamic, Hide-A-Lift, Lift & Tow, Jerr-Dan, and Miller about what they have to offer along with the other companies offering products and services through Tow Professional. Dan Messina will also be sharing as he always does from his experience in growing his own towing business and what he has learned in helping others across the nation to do the same in “Insightful Talk.” Also, thanks to all of you who attended our show and those who came from the other towing trade shows to help us-a true spirit of cooperation in the towing industry making it a great success. We look forward to seeing you all again this next year! Keeping reading and drive safely,

SIDE RECOVERY AND R.A.I.L. SYSTEMS BOOST SAFETY AND PRODUCTIVITY Vehicle recovery can present challenges when it comes to finding just the right position to more safely and securely pull or tow vehicles. There are a number of technologies and equipment in the market to help, including Jerr-Dan’s Side Recovery System (SRS) and Rear Awareness Indicator Lights (R.A.I.L.).
The Most Versatile Recovery Boom in its Class Jerr-Dan’s 10,000 lb. Side Recovery System (SRS) is by far the largest and strongest in the industry, and the boom swivel feature allows the operator to set up either driver or passenger side pulls in no time. The patent pending Independent Hide-Away Flip down Claw/Spade with Dual Stabilizing creates a solid foundation for any type surface and assures the utmost in stabilization. Unlike the competition, this unit will also allow for front, side or rear pulls, making it the most versatile unit in the industry. Jerr-Dan also offers a heavy duty SRS option for wreckers that offers power and choice. With 25,000 or 35,000 lb. capacity planetary winches, you’ll have the strength you need for maximum recovery potential. Better Visibility for Greater Peace of Mind Get noticed in a flash with Rear Awareness Indicator Lights (R.A.I.L.), Jerr-Dan’s exclusive lighting system. Through darkness, fog, rain or heavy traffic, R.A.I.L. uses bright amber LED strobe technology to increase rear visibility and command attention. Rearward positioning minimizes distraction for the operator and its corrosion-resistant mounting bracket is as durable as it gets. And the 15-degree upward angular placement optimizes horizontal visibility for oncoming traffic while the deck is lifted. www.jerrdan.com/equipment/innovations 6

Tower Saves Baby’s Life
On July 27, 2018, Andre Harris, a parttime driver for Bambarger Wrecker Service in Tuscaloosa, Alabama came upon a frantic woman standing in the middle of State Highway 171. Andre immediately saw that her vehicle was on upside down, on fire, and a distance down a hill. The moment Andre was told a baby was trapped in the car, he ran without hesitation to the vehicle and knocked the window out with his fist. Andre then reached in, grabbed the baby (Demarcus Richardson) by his leg, and pull him from the burning vehicle. Andre is absolutely a picture of what a hero embodies--with no thought to his own safety, he ran to risk his own life to save a baby’s life. Andre Harris has been honored by the City of Tuscaloosa, the Alabama Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and by his employer, Heath Bambarger. Heath told us that he always knew Andre was a special man, and that God had a great calling on his life. We here at Tow Professional magazine, salute your service, selflessness, and courage, Andre Harris!!
FMCSA Denies TRAA’s ELD Exemption Petition After seven long months, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has denied the Towing and Recovery Association of America, Inc.® (TRAA) petition for an exemption from electronic logging device requirements for the towing industry. Their decision is based on the premise that the exemption “would not achieve the equivalent level of safety that would be achieved by the use of ELDs.” TRAA greatly appreciates the efforts of those instrumental in writing and supporting the ELD exemption petition. While we did not achieve our desired goal, our voice was heard. The TRAA Cabinet and the TRAA Legislative Advocacy Network® (TRAA 10
LAN ®) feel strongly that FMCSA’s decision is misguided and that they truly do not understand the uniqueness of the towing industry. FMCSA continues to view towing as equivalent to the trucking industry. For years our industry has been plagued with ill fitting regulations that have negatively impacted us. It is imperative that we lobby legislation to reclassify the towing industry as first or primary responders, therefore, removing ourselves from under the trucking class. A reclassification would provide relief from unrealistic regulations, protections as emergency responders, and professionalize the towing industry once and for all. TRAA and the TRAA LAN® will continue to work diligently on behalf of the tow-

ing industry towards this effort. Now is the time for every towing company in the United States to join TRAA and make our one national voice loud, strong, and unrelenting! www.traaonline.com

Life After Towing You just cleared an accident, and you are driving back to the shop. Did you ever wonder what you would be doing if it wasn’t towing? Is it time to start thinking about life after towing? I never gave it much thought because I was not ready to sell until someone walked into my office and made me an offer. My wife and I concentrated on how to prepare to sell the company and not what we would do when I walked out the door. Here are a few things we did to prepare for the sale: 1. Told our employees we were selling the company. After seven years, our employees were like family, and we knew it would be hard to break the news. 14
2. Notified our biggest and best customers and broke the news to them. I had to assure them the service levels would not change, and the new owners will take care of them just like I did. 3. Paid off debt that we did not want the new owners to be stuck with. When we left, we did not want things hanging over our heads. 4. Educated our new owners on how our business worked, did an employee review, and showed them who our best customers were. What we did not do was think of what we would do once we walked out the door. We were still young and not ready to retire, so we had to come up with a

plan. It’s ironic that for all these years I taught towers to have a plan, know your numbers, and be prepared, and yet I had no clue what I was going to do. We knew we loved this industry and the people in it, so we wanted to stay close to towing. I developed a web page that tow companies could sign up for that would help them develop business strategies I had learned through the years. That lasted two years and allowed me to help tow companies. I attended trade shows and held seminars on private-property towing and other topics that related to towing, again helping tow companies with their businesses. My wife was appointed to the advisory board for the state of Texas for the towing industry. I
knew my wife would be busy for the next 5 years, so I had to find something to do. I sold a business by myself and used others when needed, so I thought I could be a consultant for the industry. I was able to help several companies that called me and asked for help, but this was not enough. I was able to stay involved with the association I had started, and this kept me close to the industry.
Then came a time when I retired for 2 weeks, but I went crazy, and I knew I would work the rest of my life, which is what I wanted to do. All my tow shows and seminars that I attended allowed me to see the problems in the industry. I looked at tow companies and the problems they were having in their day-to-day operations, and I looked at the source for tows and identified things I could do to help them. I decided to make a plan. Here are a few things I wanted to accomplish with my new business: 1. Develop a way to provide tow companies with more tows. 2. Assist tow company to cut expenses when responding to a service call. 3. Offer a free service that tow companies could use to increase revenue. 4. Work with law enforcement or motor clubs and help them get tow trucks for their customers as needed. Digital dispatch became the new fea-
15
ture for the towing industry. All the software developers were adding this feature to their dispatch systems. Motor clubs looked to dispatch software companies to help them address their problems. New companies like Honk, Swoop, and Urgent.ly came on to the scene and started to compete against the motor clubs. I took a close look at what was happening

Insightful talk By D an Mes s ina in the industry and realized what I could do to help the industry and execute my plan. The one thing that motor clubs, dispatch software companies, and all the new companies had in common was they all needed tow companies. My plan is to build a network of companies using a product I developed that would address everyone’s needs. It had to be free to the
tow companies while giving them more tows and reducing expenses. I knew the towing industry, so I gathered a group of technical people that had the skills I needed to develop the product I needed to address the industry problems. After 2 years of developing and testing my product, I am ready to enter the market place. My product provides a
win, win, win for all parties involved. I’m 70 years old and many people ask me why I don’t just retire. I worked hard all my life, and I found an industry I love with people I love to work with. I do have an exit strategy, but first I want to help the people that helped me for the past 25 years. I think I found my life after towing, and it allows me to stay in the towing industry. If you are to the point when you hate to go to work and your employees are becoming a bigger problem than you want to face it might be time to start thinking about retirement. Here are a few things to help prepare you for that decision: 1. Talk to your family about it. Remember they are the ones that will have to put up with you day in and day out. 2. Put your company in a financial position that allows you to have money to retire. 3. Prepare your employees for their life without you. Regardless of all the problems they had with you, they will miss you. 4. Know what you are going to do when you don’t have to go to work anymore. Fishing every day is not the answer. 5. Make sure you have enough money to support your new life style. Make sure you can continue to spoil your grandchildren. Many people will be affected by your decision.
It took me several years to adjust to not towing cars, but I think I finally found my new life. If you are having trouble when the time comes, call me, and I will help you find yours. 16

WHEEL LIFT | REPO equipment
DYNAMIC The Original Self-Loading Wheel Lift By Anthony Gentile, President, Dynamic Towing Equipment & Manufacturing Dynamic is the original self-loading wheel lift! We are not only the original, but we are also the most recognized name in the repo industry with a proven track record of consistent growth. Our success has had a clear path: We are family-run business; we have a reachable, problem-solving customer service department; we are leaders in technology for the industry while providing a wide range of products for the wide range of needs; and finally, we have a big heart. Dynamic has come to be as many of the repo and towing businesses have come to be—grown out of a grass-roots, family-based tradition. Family is important, and its why we do what we do. Yet, we are not just related, we are also reachable. We answer our phones on simple to diffi18
cult service issues and get back as quickly as we can with trouble-shooting help for the variety of problems that do arise. About the better product, Dynamic has been the leader of innovative technology for safer and quicker repos. We have become that leader by placing a high value on hearing from the people of the industry and then using their input to constantly improve our products. To make those technology ideas a reality, Dynamic has its own in-house engineering department to consistently develop cuttingedge technologies that address the everchanging needs of the industries we serve. A good example of this is Dynamic’s addition of robotics to our equipment that includes a dual-cell robot welder and a python which is a very spe-
Tow Professional | Volume 7 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com
cialized machine that is used to cut machine steel tubes and angles. Leading technology is not all that Dynamic has to offer; we have a wide range of units for everyone from the startup person with a beginner’s budget to the largest companies in the industry who have been using the Dynamic products from day one. Leading companies have been replacing the equipment they have been using for years with Dynamic’s topof-the-line products. For the budget-minded company, the go-to unit is the Dynamic Slide-In and the Stealth unit which has an under reach. Both are designed to mount on pick-up trucks or on a cab and chassis. The Slide goes in the bed with an easy install that any mechanic can do. Both units are clutch pumps which are great for
those tight spaces in the cities especially since the pick-up truck has a narrower width. Another group that benefits from need-tailored Dynamic products are the companies that put many miles on their equipment because the units are easily swapped from vehicle to vehicle. The Dynamic Slide has many options available too: 3500 lb. and 5000-lb. wheel lifts. You can also order your unit with a winch and with an extendable boom and winch. The next step up in the Dynamic lineup would be the 701 Series. The 701 is available with the original Classic body or the Lighting-body style. The Lightning has the fenders dropped down 3 inches and cut back 12 inches. The benefits are better visibility, and when doing 90-degree hookups, there is less a chance of damaging the vehicle being towed. The Lighting is also available with an optional polyfender upgrade. The upgraded fenders include fenders, tool boxes, and lids. The benefits of the poly fenders are no more rust, light weight, and better fuel efficiency. The 701 has a 5000 lb. wheel lift rated fully extended with 75 inches of reach. The original 701 had a floating style wheel lift. Now Dynamic offers negative tilt with 25 degrees of positive and negative tilt and 79 inches of reach. The 701 Series, also has Dynamic’s 3-year warranty. The 701 can be ordered with many different configurations from just a wheel (701B) to a wheel lift with a drag winch (701BDW) or with a single winch recovery extendable boom (701BSW) or with dual winches (701BTW). The next series up that Dynamic offers is the 755. This unit comes with Dynamic’s 4-year warranty. It has a 5500-lb. fully extended rated wheel lift with 80 inches of reach and has 25 degrees of positive and negative tilt. This is a heavy-duty unit that is also available with the poly fenders and all the other configurations that the 701 Series has. Also, Dynamic has a complete product line for the towing industry. They carry a complete line of rollbacks including the Dynamic Radius which is the only rollback that rotates 240 degrees on the market, designed for recovery work and to repo cars out of the tight spots such as
parking lots, apartment complexes. Dynamic does have fork-lift attachments, 5th wheel attachments, and counter-balance weights. Dynamic also provides service trucks to motor club providers and mid-duty wreckers. Dynamic offers three types of fork-lift attachments from an economical unit to our heavy-duty 9000-lb self-loading unit key for both the repo person and the tower. The basic unit is designed for the shop that has a fork lift and has a need to move cars that aren’t running around the shop to do repairs on them. This basic unit is not self-loading; it’s a manual wheel-lift hook up that is able to move the vehicle into any spot that you need it to get into. Then the other two are self-loading wheel lifts based on Dynamic’s original design with 5000 and 9000-lb. capacities, 90-degree hook ups, and the 5000-lb. fork-lift attachment based on Dynamics 701 units. Then, we also have the heavy-duty unit larger, heavier kingpin plate and larger diameter pin. The top and bottom plates are doubled. These units are the best in the market used by many municipalities, major auctions, remarketing services, salvage yards, and repo/tow yards worldwide. These units are easily and quickly installed. Slide your forks into the unit and then secure with the safety chains. The two hydraulic lines can be hooked up to your auxiliary port of the fork lift. This complete process takes about five minutes. To save even more time you can also add quick disconnects. There are so many uses for Dynamic fork-lift attachments from storage yards, dealership, municipalities, repair shops setting up auctions and just moving cars and truck around the shop. There is no quicker way to move vehicles than with Dynamics attachments. Since damage is always a concern when relocating vehicles in tight areas with great visibility of the fork-lift attachment and ability to do 90-degree hookups, the self-loading unit is something you need in your operation. It’s safer and allows you to park more vehicles per square foot, and its designed to quickly attach to your fork lift. Stop putting wear-and-tear on your trucks and on your back. Get Dynamic’s fork-lift attach-
ment today. We can ship our fork-lift attachments worldwide. Now, Dynamic does not just have big ideas to take the repo and towing industry to the next level, we also have a big heart for those who have hit hard and tragic times. In 2008, Dynamic started donating a Dynamic Slide-in Unit to the Recovery Agents Benefit Fund (RABF/www.recoveryagentsbenefitfund.org), a 501C3 organization that assists those in the repossession industry faced with debilitating injury, circumstance or even death. Valued at over $10,000, the donated unit raises thousands of dollars annually that contribute to the RABF providing financial help to families affected by the dangers of the repossession industry and the unfortunate circumstances that may prevent those in the industry from being able to plan for unexpected circumstances that can arise and devastate a family. Dynamic also donates NASCAR suite tickets for each repossession show to benefit the RABF. The tickets donated by Dynamic, often valued at over $3,000, are provided by Speedway Motorsports Inc. to Dynamic because Dynamic is the official recovery vehicle of Charlotte Motor Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway, and Kentucky Speedway. Dynamic’s hope is that donating the NASCAR tickets to the RABF auction events at various trade shows will inspire others to give as well and encourage others to contribute to such a noble cause. So, to help us in helping others, please buy a raffle ticket and have a chance to win a Slide-In. Just go to Dynamic or RABF websites for your chance to win and to help someone in the industry at the same time. Whether you are a tower who needs to effectively get into hard-to-reach places or a repo business who needs to handle business quickly and efficiently, Dynamic has products you can use today and tomorrow. Go with the company whose drive for growth and innovation produced the original self-loading wheel lift and the only rollback that rotates 240 degrees—a company committed to listening to you and then helping you take your business to the next level.

WHEEL LIFT | REPO equipment
By Joseph Keene
Being the World Largest Manufacturer of Towing and Recovery Equipment means that the equipment we build must live up to its reputation. That being stated, the philosopher Aristotle actually said it best in that “the whole is more than the sum of its parts”. When it comes to the focus on light-duty wreckers and autoload style wheel lifts, our autoloaders put the ball in our wheelhouse- no pun intended. We manufacture Century®, Vulcan®, and Chevron™ light-duty wreckers in both conventional and integrated configurations. In our 24/7 high-demand industry three of these light-duty integrated autoloaders stand out: Century® Express 312 G2, Vulcan® 812 Intruder II, and Chevron™ Renegade 408TA. These three autoloaders are engineered for the precise purpose of efficiently recovering and towing of light-duty vehicles. It is true that these wreckers are much more than 22
the sum of their parts, however, to understand this let us look at what makes them tick. Wheel lifts are the primary component on these three autoloaders that must be considered. The Century® and Vulcan® 2nd generation wheel lifts are designed to maximize L-Arm to tire surface ratio by way of their slanted diamond shaped LArm. This maximizes the grip on the tire, which is critical during negative sloped recovery scenarios, such as in a parking garage or down a steep driveway. The addition of optional spacer socks makes the Century® and Vulcan® wheel lifts perfect for small diameter or flatten tires. Features like a self-centering full 90degree pivoting crossbar found on both the first and second-generation Century® and Vulcan® autoloaders are what make parallel parked recoveries possible- an everyday situation in cities and urban

environments. The Chevron™ Renegade 408TA has its own unique self-centering wheellift called the AutoGrip™ II. The AutoGrip™ II features hydraulic self-locking curved arms (claws) that can be opened or closed to fit most any diameter tire. This is especially helpful when the towed vehicle is a disabled casualty with a damaged tire or rim. Additionally, when the claws are fully closed the crossbar can be used as a tow bar for towing casualties in which the front axle is damage. Other features found on the Century®, Vulcan®, and Chevron™ autoloaders are negative tilt and for the Century® and Vulcan® models there are programmable limiting switches that take the guess work out of setting the wheellift for the approach. The programmable self-limiting switches are designed to stop the wheellift when it is level with the ground.

With a simple release and reengagement of the switch the wheellift can continue into a negative tilt. This becomes especially helpful when the operator is utilizing the control functions from inside the cab of the truck, as it helps prevent unnecessary damage or dragging of the wheellift on the ground. If recovery is a top concern for your light-duty needs, then the Chevron™ 408TA features a few options that are sure to please. The 408TA’s optional dual 9,000 lb. planetary winches and optional hydraulic rear jacks with flipper feet make this autoloader a unique contender for light-duty recovery equipment. Depending on the brand autoloader selected we offer two different style incab controllers to fit your preference. Customized toolbox options and slanted tailboard designs provide greater visibility while also maximizing storage for tools
and accessories. Depending on the model selected these units are available in either Steel, Aluminum, Composite, or PolyBody construction. Smaller components are something to consider too, like the available bolt-on tailboard “D” Rings for tight angle recoveries. Other factors that are less seen, but provide the efficiency and durability that is expected are the hydraulic hose tracking system that effectively guides the internal hydraulic hoses during wheellift utilization thereby reducing the overall wear on the hoses overtime. Whether looking at the Century® Express 312 G2, the Vulcan® 812 Intruder II, or the Chevron™ Renegade 408TA with Autogrip™ II, they all have one thing in common. Each of these tried-and-true light-duty autoloaders are engineered with efficiency in mind. Likewise, each of these autoloaders is
manufactured to the highest standards of quality for an industry that operates 24/7. With this level of convenience comes enhanced safety as drivers are spared the risk of stepping out into high-volume traffic. The lift powers in and out, and up and down, and open and close, all maneuvers as directed by the remote. The Z series can lift up to 4,000 lbs. and tows up to 8,000 lbs. HIDE-A-LIFT MANUFACTURERS OF COBRA, VIPER, and BOA TOWING EQUIPMENT
By Roy Van Engen
Hide-A-Lift, is a family-owned business located in the northwest corner of Iowa. The owners of the business do all the manufacturing, shipping & everything that goes along with producing the Cobra, Viper and the Boa. All three can be found on their Hide-A-Lift website. The Cobra, a totally hydraulic unit, is no doubt one of the heaviest slide in units available on the market today. With a massive 6 x 6 x 3/8 wall main beam and a double pump hydraulic system for more power and speed it can do the job for you. Now it also has a new lower profile head that can get under the low cars easier than ever. The Viper, also a totally hydraulic unit, is again one of the strongest underlifts on the market today. The 3 stage extend

tubes all made from 3/8 to 5/16 inch wall steel are virtually indestructible, with a unique extend cylinder that has no hydraulic hoses in the tubes, no moving tubes running against the hydraulic hoses. And a low profile hydraulic head same as the Cobra so you can pick up the low riding cars. The Boa, our most economical unit is a hydraulic up and down, manual extend. This unit also mounts under the frame to keep your box open for other uses. These underlifts are one of the first on the market and have been in use for 20 yrs. For more pictures and videos of all the units check out our Hide-A-Lift website. 800-634-9340 www.hidealift.com

TRIPLE K - THE TRUE TILT 5TH WHEEL QUICK-TACH
The True Tilt 5th Wheel Quick-Tach is a heavy duty under lift that has the most extension, most retraction, more tilt and the most lifting capacity of any lift on the market. It has a lift rating of 45,000 pounds retracted and 24,000 fully extended. It has a clear extension of 140" to the center of the axle forks and nearly 160" to the center of the Heavy Duty Wheel forks when used. The unit will tilt the full rated load in the given positions. We use 16 nylon wear pads in the boom section, using the nylon pads both top and bottom of the sections. The main unit rolls up and down the mount on large 6 inch diameter rollers. The rollers give no friction in the up and down movement, so heavy loads can be lifted with no friction loss. The boom sections are made of 100,000 pound steel. This allows us to keep the boom height profile very short. Also, the nylon pads are set into pockets milled into the boom sections, allowing us to only have only 1/4" clearance 28
between boom sections. This allows us to keep the overall boom height section very low to accommodate aerodynamics and low profile bumpers. The hydraulic hoses are all “hidden” in the unit, encased in a nylon tracking chain to keep them in place free from wear and tear. Our crossbar is made of a
Tow Professional | Volume 7 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com
one piece solid steel casting made of 100,000 pound steel. The tongue it rotates in is also one piece cast steel (100,000 pound steel). We use spring steel "Connex" bushings throughout the unit, in every place there is a heavy weldment or forging. We use 2 1/2" pins throughout the unit and
a 3" pivot pin on the crossbar. We use a wide stance on our mount and pins, especially the hinge pin so the unit can handle the huge stresses that are induced especially while backing towed vehicles around corners into tight quarters. In that situation, large stresses are transmitted to the hinge and mount sections of the lift unit. We have standard wireless radio built into the unit. The radio is a standard feature with a 6 function controller that will control the lift for up-down; in–out; and tilt up–tilt down operation. We can attach a winch to the gooseneck. We utilize a 750 Holmes boom head attached to the top of the vertical boom. The main unit can be used as a stiff leg during winching operations. We can include a 10 function radio to also operate the winch with the radio control, operating the in and out on the winch and incorporating an air valve with the radio to operate the freespool on the winch.
This is an optional option. The unit is shipped as either an electric/hydraulic or with a valve pac to be powered by the trucks PTO system. The electric/hydraulic is a self-contained unit utilizing two electric pumps for increased volume and speed of the hydraulics. There is also a fail-safe built in so that if one motor fails, the other will continue to function the unit. This unit is provided with battery cable to hook into your trucks battery for the power source. The valve pac system incorporates a valve manifold that will attach to a truck’s PTO pump system. It has a built-in flow regulator to adjust the volume of the oil going to the lift unit. The manifold has an open port to attach an additional valve to operate a winch. The winch valve port is unrestricted, so the winch can be operated at the full capacity of the pump even though the lift unit is restricted. Our unit pricing includes either an electric/hydraulic pump or a valve pac to tie
into your truck’s PTO pump; the 6 function wireless radio control plus a 25’ hard wired remote control; 4 sets of axle frame forks; the parking stands; and all necessary hardware to mount to a road tractor. As options, we have available the heavy duty wheel fork set. Also offered is a boom head, or a winch mount is available if you want to attach a winch to the unit. We have the hydraulic valve and air valve kits available for the winch with the 10 function radio. The units are shipped with the gooseneck unattached to the main mount bracket. The entire lift is assembled. The pump or valve and radio are mounted in the gooseneck. The customer will only have to mount the gooseneck to the mount bracket and install 6 hydraulic hoses between the pump valves and lift unit once the unit arrives. 800-624-2892 www.triplekindustries.com

Beach, Alabama! There is no reason we can’t do business and have a blast at the same time! From the moment you come into Orange Beach over the Foley Beach Express, it feels bigger than life. Immediately you can see on your left the Ferris wheel from the Wharf area which teams with novelty shops and fine eating. If you are not puttputting at the Wharf Mini Golf, puzzling your way out of the
Orange Beach Break Out escape rooms, ziplining over the 6000 feet of terrain on the Hummingbird Zipline Course, sailing into the marina to attend the show or catching a movie at AMC (I caught a movie!), you can get lost in fine dining at the Bayes Southern Bar and Grill (The tenderloin salad was my favorite!), Blue Water BBQ and more! While I was in the Orange Beach Event Center, a person came up to me and said excited, “This venue for the show is awesome!” I knew
what they were saying. Even though we were at the beach, it did not feel like Mardi Gras at college spring break. It was the best of both worlds: vacation beach attractions with a family-friendly commercial and municipal culture. To summarize: the 2018 Southern Tow Expo and Beach Bash in Orange Beach, Alabama was a great success on several levels. On Thursday morning, our fishing tournament participants almost doubled from last year filling two boats
almost requiring a third. Thursday night, our state towing association white tablecloth dinner at Perdido Beach Resort had 15 states represented across the Southeast and Midwest with 70 presidents, vice presidents, key members and first responders attending up from 51 attendees last year with historic strategic dialogue. Gay Rochester, from INA Towing and Michele Murray from Auto Data Direct helped make this a successful event through their supportive sponsor-

ships. We welcomed Cynthia Martineau from the TRAA as a new association to join our dinner this year along with Oklahoma’s OKWA, and Arkansas’s PTRAA. On Friday, I helped with registration, and that was a challenge! Even though it was Friday morning, traffic was like greyhounds out of the shoot. At 5:30 p.m. that evening, I felt like Mufasa after the wildebeest run in the Lion King. It felt like we had 3x a much traffic the first day than 36
we did last year. I had just taken my first breather and a little man about 8 years old came up to me and said, “Sir, do you have my name badge printed, and you do have my family’s printed?” I mentally winced and bit my bottom lip and thought for a moment because registration had ended 30 minutes ago. Then I thought, this young man is confidently asking me for what he needs and trying to help his family out, so I asked, “What is your name?” He said, “My name is “Sabin,” and my middle

name starts with an “E” and my last name starts with a “C.” I was feeling brain dead, so he had to put it together for me. “That makes my initials “SEC.” That was a strong close. I said, “Follow me over to the table, and we will get those badges for you right now.” How could I say “No” to “SEC” Sabin? His grandfather came by later and let me know that Sabin had helped him pick out a truck to buy (which helped the sale with his wife!) This was a good picture of what our show is about--

family businesses coming to the beach and joining together to buy some of the best products in the industry while have a blast of time doing it! During the day Friday and Saturday, WreckMaster conducted Level 2/3 Training. We thank Kurt Wilson and Scott Aey for leading those classes as they had 25 plus in attendance-one of the best training classes they had experienced. Also Friday and Saturday, leaders from across the nation led excellent seminars to help towers grow their businesses with the latest in cuttingedge information. We thank Jeff Spadafora with Zellner Insurance, Dan Messina with TowTrax, Steve Rogers with ARTB, Larry Oxenham with the American Society for Asset Protection, Perry Beaty with Hazmat Responder Network, Steve Young with AutoLock, and Gay Rochester with INA Towing. On Friday night, the Santander/ TowMate Beach Bash went very well with a fantastic band and some of best tasting shrimp and sides at the Shrimp boil. I had never had brussels sprouts in a Shrimp boil. I don’t even like brussels sprouts, but those were delicious! On Saturday, the Tom/Tom party at the Flora-Bama was epic with 5 different bands playing a strong taste of southern beach chill and the rock classics. Even childcare Saturday night went great with our pet rock painting sessions, four kid movies, and Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets all lead by our 3-national-certification childcare worker. Sunday, we had our awards ceremony for our Deep-Sea Fishing Tournament sponsored by Jerr Dan and our “Show-NShine” Beauty Contest sponsored Best Tools. Here are the results: Our “Most Seasick” (“Chumming Champion”) went to Rodney Schrimpshire from Semmes Towing. down from the TRAO show (Sept. 27-30th, www. trao.org) to help ours be a success: Bruce and Sheri Bender, Tug Brock and Joni Holland, Steve and Vicki Schmidt, and Kevin Fox (www.internationaltowingmuseum.org). After an intense setup and being right in the thick of handling all the attendees that were constantly streaming in, I turned to Bruce and asked him, “Bruce, you took a week off from your work to come and work so hard to help us, why?” He said, “It is time we all learn to work
together.” He inspired me—especially since he helped me figure out how to get the volume working on my computer synced Springhill Suites meeting room projector for the kids’ movie during childcare for the Flora-Bama! Thanks, Bruce! You say, “So where did the bull shark fishing come in?” Jaws came out June 20, 1975. My dad decided to take me deep-sea fishing right after I read the book and saw the movie. The guys on our deep-sea fishing boat then during our trip yelled, “Hey Volume 7 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com | Tow Professional

guys come see thi this shark!” We allll llooked h k!” W k d overboard b d tto see about b t 6 to 8- foot shark swimming under our boat. As a 10-year old, I knew it was the end of all things, and the squid on the railing wasn’t going to be the only bait especially since we had gotten up at 2:00 a.m. to go fishing so land was nowhere in sight--I was terrified. I do have to confess nearly 40 years later, I had my eye on shore the whole time Darian Weaver (Tow Professional’s owner and publisher), Butch Cole, (TP’s Director of Business Development), and I went fishing with some of the guys from the show on Monday after everything was over. When Darian yelled out for some help on his line, I watched from a safe distance as he and Butch tag-team wrestled what came to the surface as the largest bull shark that boat crew had ever caught estimated at 400 lbs. plus. and 8 feet to 17 feet long! My heart raced, and I got some shark selfies. It was a moment to remember! So, why did we do a national towing trade show in Orange Beach, Alabama? I will tell you: In a place where families could have a blast, we wanted to take the top products in the towing industry and put them in front of the decision makers who could use them to serve the public even better. After talking with several of our vendors, clearly Southern Tow Expo and Beach Bash was for many a selling show. Because of that, we pulled many new buyers into the market as the most common thing I heard every day in registration was “This is my first show.” Our 2018 Southern Tow Expo and Beach Bash wasn’t just their first towing trade show—it was my first show also, and my first sideline experience with bull shark fishing-both experiences are unforgettable-a great show and a blast of a time! See you next year for the same!

By Gene Eudy- Editor, Tow Professional
In Orange Beach, Alabama in August, we were getting the message out “Over One—Lose None” with our Traffic Incident Management (TIM) scenario in conjunction with Tow Professional’s Southern Tow Expo and Beach. We are just one of many trying to educate the public to help save first responders’ lives. Today, I went to the International Towing & Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum’s (ITRHFM) website (https://internationaltowingmuseum.org ) and clicked on “Wall of the Fallen.” Onsite at the ITRHFM, a solemn and sobering monument stands with name after name listed on it honoring the tow operators killed in the line of service to the public. My eye immediately went to the pictures at the bottom of the page where they had posted tow operators who gave their lives while trying to help others on the side of the road. The first name was “Aaron D Helfrich,” He died at 32. The caption said, “A tractor-trailer hauling construction equipment hit Mr. Helfrich on the side of the interstate and did not stop. He was killed instantly.” He was one of many pictures and stories that stung and caused a surge of emotion as I read them. I glanced also at the mission statement for the Wall of the
Fallen which says: To honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, to generate public awareness of the dangers involved in the towing and recovery industry, and to permanently record and commemorate those involved in fatalities in the towing and recovery industry. Once a year, Tow Professional has dedicated a front cover to list the names of the tow operators who have given their lives in the year before. Darian Weaver, our owner and publisher, shared with me his moving experience at the ITRHFM’s “Wall of the Fallen” ceremony seeing their families present representing their loved ones who were lost while trying to help others on the side of the road. It was very emotional listening to each of their stories and hearing how senseless each death was since all could have been avoided with a simple fix: “Over One— Lose None!” We are committed here at Tow Professional to getting that message out. That is why at our most recent national towing trade show, Southern Tow Expo and Beach Bash (STEBB), we sponsored a Traffic Incident Management (TIM) scenario. We were promoting the INA Towing Network, LLC’s partnership in the Volume 7 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com | Tow Professional
47
campaign “Over One-Lose None!” At their website at www.overone.org., they quote Jeffrey Godwin, chair of the museum’s Wall of the Fallen as well as its Survivor Fund saying that “one tow operator dies every six days.” That shocking statistic really puts things into perspective! Wanting to highlight the message to “Over One—Lose None,” we reached out to several leaders to help us put a TIM scenario together. We contacted the Orange Beach Police Department with Chief Joe Fierro, the OB Fire Department with Chief Justin Pearce and Battalion Chief Kevin Lanford, the Medstar Medical Services (Lifeguard Ambulance) with Michael Sandell, Kurt Willson and Scott Aey, instructors from WreckMaster, and Stephen Weil, Jr., a WreckMaster certified tower, with Weil Wrecker Service from Birmingham, AL out of which Tow Professional magazine is based. On August 12, 2018 in the Orange Beach Event Center parking lot area from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., we recovered a school bus off a car both which had a mannequin victim trapped inside. At 12:00 p.m., the OBPD car sirens went off
48
Tow Professional | Volume 7 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com
as they came rushing in. Right after them the sirens from the OBFD went off as their truck came in next. Following the OBFD, the ambulance arrived and afterward the WreckMaster certified tower arrives. The Police set up the perimeter and were making command decisions over the scene. The OBFD assessed the scene and the victim. Stephen Weil, Jr. using MatJack air bags provided by Tony’s Wrecker Service then lifted the school bus off the car both of which were provided by Pitts and Sons Wrecker Service. The OBFD, then extricated the victim when it was safe out of the car, and then Medstar Ambulance service took the victim to get medical attention. Not only was cooperation seamless as the team used Sonetics’ headsets to communicate, but also during the whole event, WreckMaster instructors, Kurt Wilson and Scott Aey, gave a play-by-play description of the things happening over a PA system so all who attended the event from our show and the community could learn from the event. In the end, everything culminated into one purpose: to educate the public on the importance
of moving over one lane when approaching a first responder on the side of the road to help save lives! Thanks to all involved! I used to not even think about the people on the side of road and rarely moved over. Now after learning about the senseless deaths of sons, daughters, brother, sisters, husbands and wives,
I find myself mumbling the words “Over One-Loose None” and moving over one lane every time I see anyone on the side of the road. I can’t change the world, but maybe I can help save one life or more. Help us do the same by getting the message out to the public— move “Over One—Lose None.”

Fitzgerald Wrecker Sales Fitzgerald Wrecker Sales has been Rock’n and Roll’n since January of this year the company has built and or sold over 150 units thus far including Wreckers, Roll-Backs and roll-off trucks. They pride themselves in the fact that they stock trucks with a higher spec compared to many other dealers. The trucks, in many cases, have more options often with the bigger horsepower engine options and more of the creature comforts inside the cab when compared to other dealers. They work hard to build trucks that will improve driver retention and hold a better resale value. If you’re looking for something a little different, these guys will spec a truck custom to your wants and needs. "With our years of experience in the Class A trucking world we understand that 'cheaper' is not always the best option. There is a lot of added value to owning a truck that will be comfortable and perform well day in and day out. We
are in the business to sell the best possible product at a great price with friendly service and an exceptional buying experience." – Said Tommy Fitzgerald Jr. They have several cab and chassis in stock and can complete the truck of your choice in a very quick timeframe. They currently stock around 15 different beds and a little over 50 built units. Located in
Crossville, TN the facility at Fitzgerald offers a unique buying experience as you can walk around and see, and test drive a larger variety of trucks then most dealers in the country. For more info visit: FitzgeraldWreckerSales.com 888-589-9773 www.fitzgeraldwreckersales.com
