LPR - It’s NOT like repo. A frequent misperception is to assume you need cameras on every truck (like repo) which would make PWLPR prohibitively expensive. WRONG. The typical operational model would be to have two LPR cameras on one spotter vehicle (could be a legally separate company?). This vehicle patrols and detects vehicles violating policy. Tow trucks are pre-positioned outside the lot and execute the impounds using the GPS co-ordinates transmitted with the violation to locate the vehicle. The process then repeats by lot.

It’s safer. Rather than walking lots with flashlights and creating suspicion, those patrolling are safely in small, non-descript spotter vehicles. AND, PWLPR enables easy scaling for increased volume – i.e., more lots with the same crew.

Productivity is higher. NO STICKERS – LESS FRAUD! No more printing and tracking of permit labels. No more manual processes and mobile apps to check tags. Saves money! Saves time!

Mental Health Part Deux

I

think that the main reason that mental health issues are so “taboo” and no one talks about them is that most people have absolutely no training or understanding of the subject. We can’t be expected to unless you’ve been in a position where your primary occupation was looking out for the signs and symptoms of mental health issues. It’s time we gave ourselves a collective break and realized there IS a happy medium, so to speak, between ignoring and hiding mental health issues and being a licensed therapist. That happy medium exists where you’re able to acknowledge that issues may exist, and that just talking to the person may help them immensely – and also knowing our limitations and when it’s time to refer someone for professional counseling or other help. I’ll be skipping around a bit, and that’s ok, since I’m hardcore ADHD. (See how easy it was to admit and recognize an issue in myself?) Let’s get something out of the way – it’s ok to cry. Yes, even as a big tough man who recovers tractor-trailer rollovers for a living. It’s also ok to be mad – really mad. It’s not ok to hit our spouse or significant other, it’s not ok to curse out an employee, and it’s not ok to take out all your frustrations on the employee at the Burger King drive-thru when there’s a mistake on your order. Just establishing the ground rules. As I was talking to our magazine’s owner about this article, and the precursor I wrote last month, we talked about men crying. A memory came to mind. Did anyone see the movie “Pumpkinhead”? It’s a late ‘80s B-rate horror flick starring Lance Hendrickson, the guy who played “Bishop” in the Aliens series. It was 1991, I was in the Air Force, and I was stationed on a remote tour in Kunsan, Korea. “Remote” means a lot of things – unaccompanied (no family), way out in the middle of nowhere, and no direct support bases. I’d made two really good friends upon arrival who are still friends to this day. Brian and Dale. All three of us were staff sergeants, had young children, were married, and leaned on each other for company during this remote. One year away from it all. Every Sunday, we’d gather in one of our rooms – the “host” usually rented the VHS tapes and provided snacks – sometimes beer and chips, sometimes milk and cookies. The host got to pick the movie. I picked “Pumpkinhead” on this particular Sunday, hoping that a campy horror flick would break up the monotonous work of doing our time at Kunsan. We settled into the movie, seated with our beer and chips, 16

and as the movie developed, Lance Hendrickson played the father to a young blonde boy. All three of us staff sergeants had young children. My boys were four and five at the time and had blonde hair. Brian had a four-year-old; Dale had a three-yearold. In the beginning stages of the movie, we see that Lance’s character owns a fruit and vegetable stand on the side of the highway. The boy’s mother, Lance’s wife, died from cancer a few years before, so it’s just father and son. Lance has to head into town for a minute so he tells his son to stay put in the house, play with his toys, and watch TV. Just after dad left, a group of people in their late teens rolled up to the store and one of them unloaded a dirt bike to play with on the nearby sand dunes. His companions tried to get the young guy to leave the bike alone, but his ego wouldn’t have it. The guy was revving the bike, and then took off, jumping the small hills. The little boy heard the bike running and busted outside, looking to see what all the noise was about. He ran out onto the dunes to get a better look just as the teen on the bike was jumping a hill – and he landed square on the boy with his motorcycle. The dad came back, and all the kids were crying and freaking out while apologizing. The dad screamed at them to leave. He carried his son, now barely alive, into the house and laid him on the kitchen counter. He washed the boy’s face, straightened the boy’s wire-framed eyeglasses, cleaned the lenses, and placed them on his son’s face. The boy opened his eyes for a second, said “Daddy”, and died.

Dang it. The three of us manly military police staff sergeants burst into tears. The drain of all the factors – being away from the family, being in a remote location, dealing with endless boredom, and the fact that the little boy was very near in age and appearance to our own sons – caused us all to break down sobbing. I’m not talking about a tear rolling down your cheek. I’m talking about triple-dog-throw-down loud crying. Since I held the remote to the VCR, I asked the guys if we needed to take a break. The others said through their crying, “Yes.” I paused the movie. We bawled for about ten minutes. We got up, one at a time, went into my bathroom and washed our faces, and returned to our seats. We gave each other a silent nod that we were once again ready to continue the movie. Pumpkinhead is based on the idea that when something bad happens to your family, you can summon this monster to do your bidding and wreak havoc on your enemies. Lance Hendrickson did just that, and Pumpkinhead went out hunting those teenagers. I still to this day recommend the movie. My point is that it’s ok to cry. It’s ok to be sad. We all deal with things like that – it’s just the normal emotional toll taken on us as we experience life. And to pretend that those things don’t exist is just stupid, and actually dangerous. Trying to bury your feelings only causes more of a reaction later, and at times, borders on being uncontrollable when you finally let “it” out.

Recognize in yourself that you’re not a superhero. You’re not impervious to pain, emotional reactions, and outside influences. You’re also, most likely, not a psychologist or psychiatrist, so you shouldn’t try self-diagnosis and treatment in yourself, nor should you try to treat others. There’s an exception, though, that’s important here – at times, just talking to someone about what may be going on with them can help them immensely. I’ve also noticed several times when I’ve talked to someone about their issues, I’ve realized that something that’s bothering me suddenly doesn’t seem so bad, or by talking it out, I’ve developed a strategy to fix my own problems. It’s time that we make mental health issues no longer a taboo subject. Everyone deals with something, and people have much different methods and levels of selfrepair – some have none at all. It’s important to recognize your own limitations, limitations of your family members and employees, and know when the time is right to seek professional guidance. The first step usually revolves around discovering that counseling is available as part of just about every health insurance plan in the country. All you may need is a medical referral. Asking for that help for yourself or one of your people is a MUCH braver thing than remaining silent and letting it eat you up from the inside.

Podcast Updates

W

hen I say “Hear Ye, Hear Ye, Podcast Updates”, I envision a small-town newspaper boy offering his paper to people on the street. Much like his constant activity, every week we do the “Tow Professional” magazine’s podcast which has been a great success. Don’t just take my word for it. Go to the Tow Professional podcast every week, and you’ll find a new informative episode with guests you already know, and if you don’t, you should know them. Episode 1 had Darian Weaver, the President and Publisher of “Tow Professional” magazine, explaining the reason and purpose of this new media platform. Averaging over 2,000 listeners throughout the US and Canada, this week we also picked up listeners in Japan, 8 more in Europe bringing them to 42 and 4 more added in Australia. It’s evident that we’re adding listeners weekly across the world. Here’s why. If you log on, you’ll hear from people like Dalan Zartman from Energy Security Agency. If you ever asked yourself where the electric vehicle is headed and what training will be needed for towers in the future, then this is the podcast that will answer those questions. It’s one of the favorites and most listened to podcasts that we have, and it’s saved and archived in the system allowing you to review it multiple times. Another favorite was the interview with Syre Perkins, from East Track North America. Syre is a treasure trove in the towing industry. If you hear that podcast, you’ll understand why. He just came back from Italy and knows all about the electric vehicle. Even with a law degree, Syre is a true tower who can relate what you

desperately need to know about properly loading an electric vehicle. During that podcast, he will give his personal number so any tower that needs to talk can call him directly. Great podcast! Another great podcast that you don’t want to miss was with Cindy Martineau, the head person at TRAA. Having the latest information about your industry makes it worth your time to listen to hers. We also did a podcast with our two most-read writers of this great publication, Jim and Dan. Jim E. Lewis, our expert witness was quite informative. Every time I read

I personally want to say that it is well worth the time and money. I made the money back for the class from a job that we did before the class for a stolen recovery in someone’s back yard that I was not sure how to get paid and this class gave me the knowledge to get paid for this job. Long story short, it is a great investment to our business.

tow show, September 22nd – 25th in Mason, Ohio. Listen to the podcast because it was the most fun podcast that we’ve done. You’ll understand why I am saying this. As a reminder, we are located on Spotify, iTunes, Pandora, Google Play, Stitcher, iHeart media, Amazon or wherever you get your podcasts. We have Brian Riker, your DOT guy on an episode. He speaks about his tenure in towing, and we introduce his new segment, “Windshield Wisdom”, in the next episode. My mother used to say something quite simple, “Always look for help from others who know what to do.” An informative person, Brian is a faithful helper for us all. Want to pick his brain, just say, “I heard you on the Tow Professional podcast”, and you’ve got his attention. I’ve just named some of the guests on the podcast, but there are so many other people you should be listening to as well. Please LISTEN, LIKE, REVIEW and SHARE everywhere. We have a dedicated hot line at 706-409-5603. If your association has some news that you want lots of listeners to hear, call and leave your message. If there are people that you are not hearing but you would like to hear, let us know. This is your podcast. We want to be “The Voice of the Industry”, a podcast you and your family can listen to in the car or truck. Every week we have a 30 second blessing on our listeners, family and loved ones. This was built for the towing industry to learn what products and services are available to everyone within our great industry. We continually educate ourselves because when we kiss our loved one’s goodbye in the morning, we can return safely and a little bit better off at night. I’m proud to be the Co-Host with this podcast that will help make your bottom line better. Soon, we will have over 5,000 listeners. See you next time.

Towbook:

We’re All About YOU By Tom Bacon

Your Board Seat is Ready Our industry is built on a foundation of independent service providers dedicated to caring for people in need. This foundation is a virtual family of business owners and their teams who take on the dangerous task of assisting motorists at all hours of the day and night. Our aim at Towbook has always been to build a company, and a team, that supports our clients in the same way they care for their customers. Our mission is to participate in the community we serve and be there for you any time of the day or night, no matter when you need help. These cannot be just words; for us it must be a way of life – just like it is for you. To accomplish this, we decided long ago that the board of directors at Towbook is our customers, and every

customer has a seat in the board room. Each of you has a voice in what we do, how we operate and where we’re headed together.

Introducing Towbook Cares TM Towbook is a brand that cares about our industry, and we’re going to show it. The faith of our customers has enabled us to build Towbook into something more than just a software company. We’ve become the largest provider of towing management software in the world, largely because we’ve teamed with our clients and the industry’s most trusted brands. Now, we are committed to harnessing our team of customers and partners to give back to the towing and

roadside industry. Nothing defines that commitment to our industry more than our new Towbook Cares Program TM. Towbook Cares is a program engineered to advocate and support those who choose Towbook as their management software platform. Towbook Cares will break the barriers of software reaching into sectors of the towing and roadside industry to benefit our clients in many ways. This program will enlist only the most trusted and established brands in the industry, in their field. In the coming months, you will begin to see program features come to life. Providing the best solution means fielding the best team, period.

The Towbook Platform Everything we do at Towbook is focused on helping our customers run a more efficient and profitable business. The Towbook feature set continues to expand, and our pursuit of the ultimate solution will never end. As we’re fond of saying, there is no finish line. Here are a few highlights of the capabilities available with Towbook Management Software. Dispatching. Our real-time dispatching solution delivers the ability to create, accept and receive jobs on any device. We’re integrated with the leading brands in our industry for digital and direct dispatching with many new integrations on the horizon.

Towbook also makes it simple for your customers to send jobs directly to your system via their own web request form. Other features include the option to create quotes, automatically calculate mileage, and add rate items using pricing rules. Users can also quickly add time-stamped and

geocoded photographs that demonstrate completed work. This can help protect against damage claims. Mobile Apps. Towbook’s iOS and Android mobile apps are so powerful that users can do most of their work right from their phone or tablet. With our mobile apps, the user can receive dispatch requests, create and dispatch calls, add photos, create damage reports, record payments and so much more. Request Customer Location. Your consumers need and expect you to find them quickly - even if they have no idea where they are. Towbook’s “ping” feature makes it easy to send a text to your customer, and if they approve the location request, their phone will send the location to your dispatch screen. Provider Locator Service. We have a growing list of partners who send jobs exclusively through Towbook when they need a service provider for a job. Jobs are offered to Towbook users like any other digital offer. If you accept the work, the call is sent directly to your system along with a one-time credit card, so you get paid when the job is completed.

Dispatch to Subcontractor. We’re excited to introduce another important feature that’s unique to Towbook, the ability for any company using Towbook to dispatch jobs to any other company that uses Towbook. We call this feature Dispatch to Subcontractor, and it’s extremely popular with operators who might be too busy to handle a specific job or may not have the right equipment for the work. Another popular use for this feature is car dealerships and shop www.towprofessional.com

TOWING SOFT WARE accounts who may send jobs to several providers in their area. Customer Surveys & Progress Texts. Towbook’s Roadside. io solution, combined with progress texts and our customer survey feature delivers the latest customer experience capabilities to your fingertips allowing you to provide an “Uber-like” experience for your customers. With Roadside.io, you can share info with customers while their service is in progress. This helps customers understand what’s happening without having to call for an update. Roadside.io makes it simple for someone like a family member, who may not be with the vehicle, monitor progress from anywhere. You can also send customer satisfaction surveys when the job is complete. These surveys track the average rating for each driver. Mapping & GPS Tracking. With multiple GPS integrations, including mobile phone, tablet and in-truck tracking units, Towbook helps you track and manage drivers and view jobs in real time.

Our new Azuga integration will soon introduce PTO, camera, and video capabilities directly in your Towbook system. Our replay feature also helps you to analyze the routes that your team travels over a period and allows you to take a deeper look at events that occurred on certain calls. Our mission is to put all the tools needed to manage your fleet, drivers, and jobs at the tip of your fingers. 28 TOW PROFESSIONAL |

Pre-Trip & Equipment Inspections. In Towbook, drivers can complete a pre-trip equipment inspection using the Towbook mobile app. Each inspection can be customized for your business to include the inspection checklist your drivers should use each shift. These inspections are available in a report that can be printed or e-mailed. Impound Management. Towbook’s impound management tools help you manage vehicles stored at your facilities from just about anywhere. When a vehicle is impounded, the system will automatically calculate storage, populate your notification letters and forms, and manage all the tasks you must complete for each vehicle. We also have a unique Vehicle Lookup option allowing you to create a web portal for customers, police departments or private properties searching for a vehicle. This allows them to confirm if you have the vehicle and if so, the address of the lot and any pertinent information related to release procedures – all online! Lien Letters and Forms. In Towbook, we set up all your notification letters and state forms for you. The system will automatically update each form as you add data to calls in Towbook. When you’re ready to send a letter it can be generated for each impound with the click of a button. Auto Data Direct. We’re happy to share the news about our integration with AutoDataDirect. This integration makes it extremely simple for users to locate owner information and send letters via the ADD123 DirectPost-Office feature instead of using title work. Within Towbook, tasks and reminders are set for each step in the lienholder and notification process. As these tasks are completed and notification letters are sent, the progress of each is easily tracked in Towbook.

Auctions. Towbook now has a new and complete set of auction management tools. It’s super simple to schedule your auctions, track the necessary data and forms needed to sell a vehicle and then add vehicles to your auction list. Once a vehicle is sold, we’ve streamlined the release process and have added important reporting tools to help you monitor the results of your auctioned inventory. We’re also introducing direct integrations with leading online auction services. These online services are proving to significantly reduce the workload on your team and increase the average sale price considerably. Payment Processing. We’ve partnered with Square to bring our customers the most trusted payment platform in the marketplace. With our Square integration, it’s simple to process a payment using a Square mobile reader and you can also include a remote pay link on your invoices and statements. QuickBooks Integration. If your company uses QuickBooks to manage its finances, you can sync your towing invoices directly with the QuickBooks desktop or QuickBooks online platform.

Benefiting for the families of our fallen

If each company in the industry gave just $5 when a tragedy occurs, we could generously support the families of our fallen in so many new ways. Can you give $5 when a tower dies? Help us support those left behind by the dangers of our profession.

The Survivor Fund The “Survivor Fund” was created in 2006 to complement the International Towing and Recovery Museum’s Wall of the Fallen. This fund was established to help those families who have lost a loved one in the line of service. A Survivor Fund committee was formed of people from all over the United States from the towing industry. The committee is given the information

BuildingYour Business With

I

t’s no secret that the transportation supply chain is constantly evolving. To remain competitive, carrier fleets continue to seek out new ways to ensure that freight keeps moving. One of the ways that technology is making operations more efficient is by making roadside breakdown management transparent and predictable. By eliminating the hassle of searching the internet for a provider, the back-and-forth phone calls of confirming information, requesting ETA’s, and critical updates, carriers can reduce their handling time making the entire experience much more manageable.

ServiCase Provides Certainty for Carriers and Fleets Unlike traditional listing services or directories, ServiCase allows fleets the ability to search for a towing or road service provider, and digitally dispatch calls. This allows the carriers and other event providers to receive electronic status updates from these providers which provide the clearest indication of when their asset will be back on the road.

ServiCase Technology Adopted by Event Providers ServiCase is a breakdown management system powered by the sureEcosystem digital dispatch platform and used by event providers like FleetNet America. ServiCase allows fleets and event providers the ability to locate service providers and dispatch jobs electronically via sureEcosystem, which recently crossed a milestone of over 36 TOW PROFESSIONAL |

Volume 11 • Issue 2

|

www.towprofessional.com

a half-million events handled on the platform.

Is ServiCase Just Another Directory? Absolutely not. While there may be similarities in the process of searching for a roadside provider, that’s where the similarity ends. ServiCase is unique in that it provides carriers and other fleets the ability to manage, maintain and even keep private records about preferred providers and rates, with the ability to electronically dispatch and manage events when the service provider is connected to the sureEcosystem platform. These unique features are in demand by fleets nationwide. ServiCase is also different in that the service provider is not charged for events or jobs they receive. Again, there is absolutely no upcharge for receiving the call, and under no circumstance are rates mandated. ServiCase does not mark anything up because payment is made directly to the service provider.

How ServiCase Works When a breakdown occurs, fleet managers create a case in ServiCase by providing information about the vehicle and the required type of service. When the service provider is digitally connected into sureEcosystem, jobs can be assigned directly to the provider’s dispatch software. The case information is sent to the provider’s software package, providing an alert and information about the new job. The service provider reviews the request and replies with an ETA and potentially other information. Once the ETA is accepted by the event provider, the service provider is dispatched and a live call is created in dispatching software.

for payment terms. Once the account is added, the service provider simply contacts support@sureecosystem.com to let the sureEcosystem support team know they are ready to get connected. A confirmation email is sent to the service provider, and the team at ServiCase reaches out within a couple of business days to finish connecting and testing the new digital account.

Getting Listed on ServiCase

ServiCase Connects Carriers to Towing & Mechanical Dispatch Software ServiCase is exceptional in that it can connect fleets looking for service directly to service providers through many of the commercially available towing and repair shop software platforms. The sureEcosystem platform is currently integrated with over twenty software packages including Beacon, InTow, Omadi, TOPS, and Towbook.

Connecting Dispatch Software to ServiCase To get started, users create a new Customer account in their Dispatch Software, name it “ServiCase”, selecting C.O.D.

There are several options to get your company listed on ServiCase. The most popular offering is the VIP Package which provides the company with the most visibility and includes a fully customizable ad banner provided by the team at ServiCase. This premium listing provides critical information about your company to those who are searching and includes an expanded search radius as well as a fully updatable company profile including rates, hours of operation, insurance, and more. Step 1: Service providers can search to see if they are already listed on ServiCase. To do this, the provider simply visits www.servicase.com and searches their location and a basic service they provide, i.e.: “Light Duty Towing”. If the company is displayed in the results, the provider can click a “Claim This Business” link to update their existing company record.

POWER YOU CAN DEPEND ON.

TOWING SOFT WARE Step 2: What if the provider does not find themselves in search? The provider can simply visit www.servicase.com and click the “Service Providers” link at the top of the page to choose their listing package and register their company. Once their company is registered, they will be able to update their company information including locations and services offered.

Updating Information The information that is provided for a service provider’s company will be utilized by carriers and fleet managers as they work through their service provider selection process. Service providers are encouraged to fill out their information as completely and accurately as possible. They can update this information at any time by logging in to the ServiCase website with their username and password. Companies whose profile do not include their locations, services offered, or a phone number will not be displayed in the search results. Each service provider location can have its own service offerings and multiple qualifying locations can be displayed in the search results. Mailing addresses are not considered in the search results, but service provider profiles include physical addresses which can be assigned

services to be found by those searching for providers.

Staying Connected The team at ServiCase has set up several social media accounts where they will be communicating updates and announcements. ServiCase can be found on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter. Follow ServiCase today to stay up to date on the latest news regarding ServiCase and sureEcosystem. The Advantages of Processing Liens and Lien Sales with an Integrated Software System Lien Processing State requirements for owner notifications and title applications can make processing liens on impounded vehicles a complicated and daunting task. Using a software system to help manage liens can help take the headache out of monitoring what things need to happen and when. Processing a lien on a vehicle often requires several things to happen, and usually in a specific way. These things generally happen at a particular time, or after a certain number of days have elapsed, or because some other event happened. These represent milestones in the overall lien process. Once all the milestones have been achieved, the lien on the vehicle is acquired. The TOPS Lien Processing System is customized around these milestones, which in TOPS are called lien steps. These lien steps can be scheduled to begin after a certain number of days have elapsed, either after the vehicle was brought into inventory (impounded) or after the previous step was completed. These milestones, or lien steps, generally require something to happen or for something to be processed. These processes are known in the TOPS Lien Processing Module as lien tasks. These lien tasks can be nearly anything. Things like requesting ownership information from the state DMV, printing a letter to mail to an owner, a waiting period for a given number of days, setting a lien clear date and setting the planned auction date are all examples of lien tasks. The TOPS Lien Processing System is designed to allow you to process your liens your way and allows you to process each step along the way with a few simple clicks of a mouse. It is extremely flexible and is designed to work with all state and municipal lien requirements. Once these lien steps and their tasks are in place, the clerks responsible for lien processing are no longer required to know or learn all the nuances of your particular lien process or processes. The TOPS Lien Processing Module takes care of the timing and processing of liens, allowing your clerks to process liens without requiring extensive and expensive knowledge and training. 40 TOW PROFESSIONAL |

Volume 11 • Issue 2

|

www.towprofessional.com

Batch Processing The TOPS Lien Processing System takes lien processing a step further. TOPS is built around processing liens on vehicles using what is referred to as ‘Batch’ processing. Batch processing allows all vehicles that are at the same point in the process to be managed all at the same time, saving time and effort for both large and small companies. Using batch processing, as each step is processed and completed, the vehicles are moved as a group into the next step. Groups of vehicles are moved through all the appropriate steps until the last step is completed. Once the last step is complete, you have met all the requirements to acquire a lien on all of the vehicles in that step.

Integrated Certified Mailing Another real time and money saver for your business is to take the owner notification process to the next level. Sending owner notifications and certified mailings straight from the software rather than printing and mailing saves your staff time – and time is money. The TOPS Certified Mail Process greatly streamlines the

letter mailing process and turns a paper processing nightmare into a paperless process overnight. One click of a button and your certified letters are sent to the post office, and the results are recorded directly into the impounded call’s permanent record. This saves on office products costs, as well as reducing your need to store file copies of notification letters as these can be printed on-demand and only when needed. A ‘Fire-and-Forget’ process for certified letters saves labor and time for both low-volume and high-volume certified mail customers. Low-volume customers spend a large amount of time either going to and from the post office to mail small numbers of letters, and/or double-entering owner data into postage machines. High-volume customers spend hours per day printing, collating, folding, stuffing, sealing, labeling, and then mailing certified letters. With an automated certified mail process, there are no more trips to the post office for certified mail supplies or to mail certified letters, and no more paying metered

postage machine fees. The time saved is real, and the benefits are clear.

Online Auction Sales The math is simple. More auction bidders mean more bids. More bids mean higher sale prices. Higher sale prices mean more revenue on auction sales – revenue that goes straight to your bottom line. The fastest and easiest way to increase your auction visibility is to move your auctions online. In a world where everything and everyone is online, it is no secret that online vehicle auction sales have skyrocketed. People from all over can view your auction vehicles, register and bid, driving your auction sales to heights you may never have expected. Just getting your vehicles into an online auction isn’t enough though. The key is getting them into the RIGHT online auction. The online auction company must be recognized in the industry. It must be robust and be able to handle the load. It must have the features and tools that you need to list your cars properly. Most importantly, it must be easy for your potential bidders to sign up and bid, because when they bid, you win.

TOWING SOFT WARE The TOPS system has integrated with Auction Simplified – a robust, full-featured online auction platform designed from the very beginning for selling cars. Auction Simplified allows you to sell your vehicles your way – whether it be public or private, automated or live, sealed bids, make an offer, and many others, and in any combination of all of those. The possibilities seem endless. The integrated process sends vehicles that are candidates for an auction from the TOPS system to the Auction Simplified system allowing them to be managed in Auction Simplified using their sophisticated auction tools. Once the vehicles sell at auction, the auction results are then sent back to the TOPS system so that the payments are recorded and the vehicles are released from inventory. In addition, if a vehicle is released to the owner prior to it being sold at auction, the TOPS system will pull that vehicle out of Auction Simplified automatically, saving your staff extra work and preventing embarrassing and costly mistakes. Each of these things add up to save you and your staff both time and money, and to raise your revenue. You can do them individually, or you can choose to do them with an integrated system designed to do it all. The

ebfleet Solutions, one of the world’s leading telematics providers and part of Bridgestone provides a complete lineup of services to help your fleet to run more efficiently, save time and money and protect your drivers and assets. Real-Time Location WEBFLEET Tracking and fleet management is a fixed installation to the truck with reliable tracking. It shows precisely the time spent behind the wheel and when, where, and how your fleet is utilized. It provides the real-time location of every truck in your fleet. Our vehicle tracking system tells you which employee is closest to any new assignment as well as giving you instant access to important vehicle information and driving behavior information, such as speeding or harsh braking. Reduce liability with WEBFLEET’s Active Driver Feedback – reduce aggressive driving with in-vehicle coaching, audible/visual instructions and lane guidance, handsfree calling with Bluetooth and with the combination of GPS Tracking, WEBFLEET Video is a seamless integration of front and rear dashcam technology into Webfleet Solutions’ fleet management system. Towers will be able to access and manage both their fleet and their in-truck cameras via WEBFLEET, the award-winning fleet management platform, offering a single interface experience. WEBFLEET Video combines Webfleet Solutions’ vehicle and driving data with artificial intelligence (AI) powered camera technology to give fleet operators insight into critical events, helping to prevent accidents, increase safety for the driver, enhance fleet efficiency and reduce the frequency and cost of insurance claims. WEBFLEET Video will also provide clear evidence in the event of road traffic incidents. This protects the driver against fraudulent claims, while also helping the company to avoid lengthy legal proceedings and to refute incorrect damage or injury claims. The combination of video and telematics data safeguards drivers and fleets in several ways. For example, WEBFLEET uses driving behavior data on things like idling or harsh braking to provide actionable insights and real-time feedback that

supports drivers to drive more safely and sustainably. With the addition of video technology, fleet managers now have a better understanding of why these events occur. They can protect their drivers from non-fault claims and coach them to achieve a higher level of road safety.

Stay Compliant with FMCSA regulations around DVIR Along with ELD Manager, make compliance simpler. WEBFLEET ELD Manager helps integrate compliance best practices into your business processes, to give you and your driver peace of mind that you meet regulatory obligations. Ranger’s new solution - PW± LPR – reimagines the approach to parking management

Property managers face numerous and diverse challenges – often feeling like an overmatched lion tamer. The operational issues alone can be time consuming and can detract from higher priorities like leasing. In addition,

Ranger’s innovative solution – PatrolWorks with LPR (PWLPRTM) – “raises the bar” for Private Property Enforcement and Impounding (PPI), setting new expectations for what defines a complete private property parking management offering and providing a practical solution to improve the professionalism of service delivery. In addition, the solution creates a profitable ($ Million++?) growth opportunity for towing companies delivering services by: • Increasing revenue from impounding • Reducing operational costs • Generating income from permit processing • Creating a new revenue source from ticketing (a.k.a. citations). • Enabling you to control your own destiny

they have strategic responsibilities aimed at increasing the market value of the property - and parking is a key asset. PWLPR creates the opportunity for you to grow by offering a higher-value service proposition in the market to attract and retain more customers – more lots, more violations, more impounds. With PWLPR you can grow market share with “a better mousetrap”. An extra half-a-million dollars to the bottom line from impounding? This market advantage is enabled by the unique breadth and depth of the PWLPR solution: • Mobile-friendly portals for both property managers and residents/ permit holders for information transparency • Flexibility to identify/enter violations using the LPR system and/or with the mobile app • In addition to conventional impounding, there is the option for Ticketing • Software – PatrolWorksTM – that integrates all components into a complete parking management solution, including • Configurability for propertyspecific policy preferences • Dashboards for violations and tows • Impound lot management and auctions More important than the functional components of the PWLPR solution, is the distinctive benefits delivered to properties:

Reducing Operational Costs The most noticeable advantage of PWLPR is LPR – License Plate Recognition. to assume you need cameras on every truck (like repo) which would make PWLPR prohibitively expensive. WRONG. The typical operational model would be to have two LPR cameras on one spotter vehicle (could Co-Pilot Mobile App be a legally separate company?).

AND, PWLPR enables easy scaling for increased volume – i.e., more lots with the same crew.

the first “occurrence” of a violation (e.g., expired permit) results in a ticket of $10. Second occurrence triggers a ticket for $25. Third occurrence results in impounding. The PM has collaborated on the policy design, has access to all violation information (with pictures), and is then prepared to approve impounds. Impounds per lot remain the same, but the focus is on repeat offenders. Operationally with LPR, rather than truncating a patrol with the first identified violators, spotters can scan the entire lot and generate ticketing revenue (still saves time). You generate the same impound revenue PLUS incremental revenue from ticketing.

available to both Property Managers and Permit Holders on their respective portals.

Generating Income from Permit Processing Some apartment managers are reluctant to charge for parking. However, the trend is moving from downtown commercial to residential parking. While the number of vehicles per resident in apartments is increasing (1.5 to 1.8), new residences are being constructed with fewer parking spaces (down to 1.4 or less). An on-line search would surface many companies that are already managing permits and collecting fees on behalf of apartment complexes and HOAs (your current or potential customers?). The “permitting” business model generates a list of valid license plates and relies on others to find the vehicles on the lot that don’t belong. With PWLPR, you can manage vehicle registration and permitting for your customers and the resulting data is fully integrated with your enforcement processes. Even reticent property managers find it appealing to better manage guest parking capacity while collecting a fee. Permit pricing would also assist in allocating carports and garage space. Incremental charges for multiple vehicles become practical. Property owners are seeking ways to increase asset value. Paid parking is a significant opportunity.

Creating a New Revenue Source from Ticketing The initial reaction from towing companies is often that Property Managers (PMs) will never agree to it. From experience so far - Property Managers become advocates! PMs like tagging (costly) and may be resistant to impounding. Ticketing is a “kinder, gentler” tool in enforcement. Permit Holders get the message (a ticket). Property Managers get less grief. You release fewer vehicles at no charge and increase revenue. Ticketing would not apply to immediate “safety-related tows” (blocking the fireplug). However, impounds for other violations can center on “repeat offenders”. For example, 50 TOW PROFESSIONAL |

Controlling Your Own Destiny Many PPI companies respond upon request - PMs often manage parking. These time-constrained PMs discover serious issues, make the impounding decisions, and deal with any blowback from vehicle owners. This approach works until your PM is persuaded to try another towing company. Some towing companies work as “contactors” for a third-party who provides permitting services. The permitting companies controlling the data are the ones who “own” the customer relationship. But what happens if a permitting company decides to add another tower into the mix? PWLPR makes it practical for you to control your own destiny – YOU own the relationships with YOUR customers. YOU provide the leadership for parking management. YOU control the data. Your customers look to YOU as their onestop problem solver for parking. Your role changes from “vendor” to “PARTNER”. The switching costs for a property to choose a different “partner” are much higher than to find a different “vendor”. Ranger is looking for one PPI leader in each market, who wants to grow by becoming the parking management partner for their customers – your success becomes our success. Could exclusive deployment of the innovative PatrolWorks with LPR solution be an opportunity for you to win and prosper in your market? Could it be worth an incremental million dollars in three years? More?? PWLPR is the future of private property parking management. You have the opportunity to be at the vanguard – diversifying and growing your business: profitably serving more customers and more lots. How to get started. First, talk to your customers and gauge their interest. You will likely be pleasantly surprised by their enthusiasm. Then call Ranger to arrange for Q&A around a demo. info.rangersst.com | 440.498.1495

ROTATORS & HEAVY EQUIPMENT

JERR-DAN

HEAVY DUTY EQUIPMENT Backed By 50 Year Commitment To Excellence

J

err-Dan’s five decades of innovation and commitment to quality and reliability have culminated in today’s line of Heavy Duty wreckers and Rotators. These heavy duty units, in particular, require design, engineering, and a final build that tow professionals can rely on 24/7 to get the job done under some of the toughest conditions imaginable.

HEAVY DUTY WRECKERS ENGINEERED FOR STRENGTH AND DURABILITY Whether you are looking to replace an older heavy duty wrecker with a new one or you are adding heavy duty capabilities to your fleet, Jerr-Dan has a model that is just right for your application. Jerr-Dan’s Heavy Duty wreckers are available in 25, 35, and 50-ton configurations; each one built with high-strength steel and designed for maximum power. And all feature our JFB Body made from a polypropylene copolymer material that is highimpact resistant and corrosion-free. 52

TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 11 • Issue 2

|

www.towprofessional.com

The JD25 Heavy Duty Integrated Wrecker features a 50,000 lb. 2-stage wrecker boom, high- impact resistant and corrosion-free body, and a 3-stage underlift – like all Jerr-Dan models designed with strength and performance in mind. The JD35 Heavy Duty Integrated Wrecker features a 70,000 lb. 2-stage wrecker boom, high impact resistant and corrosion- free body, and optional 3-stage underlifts. The JD50 Heavy Duty Integrated Wrecker features a 100,000 lb. 2- or 3-stage wrecker boom, high-impact resistant and corrosion-free body, and optional 3- or 4-stage underlifts. Another exclusive, the Jerr-Dan Touchlink ™ control system, features in-cab electronic controls that come standard with an overhead switch panel, and an optional underlift control panel. It also provides increased control of the light-bar, front, side, and rear strobes, and flood and work lights. And, to improve operator efficiency, each of these models offers an optional fully proportional, Jerr-Dan custom, Scanreco remote.

If you are transitioning from small or medium wreckers to a heavy duty model, you should be aware that there is an increased level of complexity inherent in the machine, and capability comparisons between different heavy duty wreckers are very significant. The buyer really needs to know what the new wrecker will be used for before comparing models. The buyer will want to carefully consider differences in lengths, feature and specification capabilities, and overall suitability for their particular business. Another critical consideration for the company that is purchasing a heavy duty wrecker for the first time is training. Your operators are doubtless experts with your current fleet of small or medium trucks but operating a heavy duty wrecker is simply not the same experience. Making sure that your operators receive proper training and practice with the new wrecker is a key to success.

THE ROTATOR DESIGNED FOR MAXIMUM STABILITY AND PERFORMANCE When assessing the suitability of a house or building, the wise buyer looks first at the foundation. This is because a faulty or unstable foundation is the ultimate red flag; no matter how nice the house atop it is, the problematic foundation foretells problems ahead for the owner. This is the same principle Jerr-Dan engineers started from when designing the JD50/60 HDR1000 Rotator: the strength and stability of the equipment’s frame must be paramount, as these qualities are critical to performance. It must be built upon a strong, stable, dependable foundation. The “foundation” of this rotator is its industry-leading scissor-style outriggers combined with its unique torsion frame design. It utilizes a unique 10 million RBM-rated torsion frame design which is the key to its performance. By properly distributing the forces encountered during lifting operations, the truck and its components remain stable and solid from start to finish. This incredibly stable platform allows an operator to maximize the working area and capabilities of the boom with its best in class 41 feet of reach. Of course, once the stable platform was built, the rest of the rotator followed along the same innovative path. For example, the Jerr-Dan Rotator also has a proven independent knee boom underlift that is offered in a variety of configurations to meet customer demands with or without a drag winch. Underlift options include the 530 model three-stage with 147 inches of reach and a rated capacity, retracted, of 53,000 lb. Another option is the 565 model three/four-stage, with a 56,500 lb. rated capacity when retracted and 181/179 inches of reach respectively. Of course, these are only two of the various options available.

The JD50/60 HDR1000 comes with two DP or Ramsey 50,000 lb. 2-speed boom winches. Jerr-Dan also offers 20,000 lb., 35,000 lb., or 50,000 lb. drag winch options as well as the 20,000 lb. boom-mounted auxiliary winch option. Available in Single Steer or Twin Steer and four or five axle configurations, our chassis are engineered to perform with our rotator. Each chassis is custom ordered to meet Jerr-Dan’s demanding specifications. The JD50/60 HDR1000 360-degree load charts (provided with each rotator) document the full working range, including over the nose of the chassis, which provides a more comprehensive and reliable working area in which to complete the most challenging recoveries. Jerr-Dan’s exclusive Touchlink ™ system features incab electronic controls that come standard and include an overhead switch panel, and an optional underlift control panel. Touchlink allows control of the light-bar, front, side, and rear strobes, and flood and work lights without leaving the cab. Touchlink is a CANBus based system, thereby reducing complexity and the need for additional wiring. Touchlink has built-in troubleshooting with smart keypad indicator lights. The centrally located, self-enclosed power distribution panel provides ease of access and serviceability to all electrical fuses and relays, and protection from the elements or accidental damage. The Touchlink control system includes a protected and

secured automotive-style wire harness, CAN-bus datalink, and weatherproof smart keypads. It is also pre-wired with three auxiliary circuits in the rear control box and one additional in the cab for those who wish to add custom lighting options. emergency shut down, engine throttle up to a preset RPM, winch 2 speed on/off switches, and winch free spool engage. The remote can be operated in a standard mode or set to a slower mode if necessary. Lighted indicators tell the operator when a winch is in free spool mode and indicate when a winch is in high-speed mode. A switchable night light feature makes the remote more visible and usable in the dark and in low lighting. It also has built-in safety features that warn the operator and, if necessary, timeout or shut off the system in certain orientations, such as if the remote is dropped. Our incredibly diverse customer base, with businesses of all sizes, all have slightly different needs. For this reason, we offer a wide variety of options. Options such as multiple storage solution packages, each one enabling you to customize the body to fit your storage requirements. If you want to make your JD50/60

HDR1000 really stand out in a crowd, check out the many available stainless and chrome accessory options we have available. Finally, to cut down on the financing hassle that often accompanies the purchase of heavier duty equipment, remember that Jerr-Dan Financial Solutions (JDFS) offers quick, professional financing and competitive rates for leases and loans on new and used Jerr-Dan equipment.

Whether you’re a one-unit operator or the owner of a large fleet, we can help you find a solution that works for you. Of course, training is critical when you buy a rotator. Jerr-Dan now offers factory training for rotator customers. Need-Driven Beginnings Derek Dangelo started Custom Built Manufacturing, LLC (Custom Built) in 2006 as a small town, American-built, heavy-duty wrecker manufacturer. The reason he launched Custom Built was that in his 30-plus years of experience in running an autobody shop and his 30 years working in the towing business, he saw a clear equipment gap across the towing industry. As a tower himself, he needed a heavy-duty tow truck that was built to handle the jobs that he was getting calls on, so he decided to build them himself. He started with old 750’s and converted them to hydraulics configuring them to the exact specifications of what he needed for the jobs he was doing. Now, he wasn’t the only tower that needed a perfect-fit truck. Towers nationwide were needing tow trucks capable of hauling anywhere from 20 tons to 80 tons. To make sure his truck matches a customer’s need, he gives the customer free reign on the layout as he walks together with them on it based off CAD CAM (computer-aided design and computeraided manufacturing). He focuses on their needs for exact specification of storage sizing. Consequently, because of the wide range of need from truck size to varying equipment on the trucks, Custom Built has responded by offering many 58

options on builds from an integrated 15-ton unit to a 60-ton rotator. So, in summary, why did Dereck start Custom Built Manufacturing? He simply built for others what he made for himself—custom-tailored heavy-duty tow trucks built to handle the varying heavy load sizes.

Multiplying Growth and Success Because Custom Built has experienced such a success from the high demand of towers being able to specific order their trucks to meet their ever-changing needs as a company, the company needed a new home. Custom Built now has a new 300,000 squarefoot facility. They have tripled the assembly department in size and quadrupled their over-all space. Also, they have doubled their work force and, therefore, doubled their truck production from 20 in 2017 to 40 trucks in 2018. Perfect-fit trucks is a major reason for Derek Dangelo’s success in the truck manufacturing business, but there is more. Even though he is driven to constantly innovate, he is a down-to-earth family man who takes time to enjoy life. Family is important to him like it is to the towers he sells to. His son works in the business and runs the assembly plant, and his daughter and daughter-in-law work in the office. Custom Built is a small town, family-run business built with grassroots American pride and integrity. Now life is more than just the year’s quota of sold trucks or the company’s financial bottom line. Derek works hard and enjoys life. He likes to smoke a good cigar. He enjoys taking road trips on his motorcycles, his Harley Electra Glide and his Softail Springer. So, the best of all worlds for Derek then would be to smoke a good cigar while riding his motorcycle down the road! He equally enjoys taking out the RV with the family on trips valuing the time he has with them. In addition to a perfect-fit truck and a core value of enjoying life, what more does Custom Built offer to the potential buyer? Customer Built Mfg. offers a more user-friendly truck when it comes to maintenance and repair, intuitive safety design, and a superior warranty.

tied up in a shop.

Custom Built builds trucks to be worked on, so everything is made to be accessible and easy to work on. You see a lot of cars and trucks that are nearly impossible to work on, and you know immediately that an engineer laid them out, not a mechanic. Custom Built designs all our equipment with service in mind, so that your moneymaker can stay on the road not

Intuitive Safety Safety begins with design, so Custom Built first looks where the danger areas are for the towers. They then layout the truck around two things: they place the towing and recovery tools on the left side of the truck and then place the controls on the right side where the operator will be standing away from

traffic. Their goal is balance between keeping the tower safe and keeping the job work efficient. Another way they enhance safety by design is by providing extra lighting on the truck and reflectives on both the truck and toolboxes which signal on-coming drivers to move over without being too over-the-top which would distract drivers causing them to drift toward the trucks.

Superior Warranty When a company has a quality product tailored to the customer’s day-to-day need that is not only safe, but cost effective, there should be no hesitation in providing a warranty that says the same. That is the very reason Customer Built stands behind their trucks by providing the best coverage in the industry--a 10-year structural warranty. Also, they want everyone who buys from them to know that every truck is 100% built in America; each is built with integrity, are affordable, and are backed by excellent customer service.

Satisfied Customers You don’t have to just consider what Custom Built says about their company, hear what several satisfied Custom Built owners have to say about the “‘Custom Built’ difference”: “Yes, Derick and Nick are great people who stand behind their product. I had an issue with my California spec’d CBR40/50, and they corrected the issue immediately. I will 60

definitely buy my next rotator from them.” “I would like to share a little information on this business and the people who run it. First off, they have answered my questions and concerns day and night even on the weekend. They are a great bunch of people to deal with! 10-year warranty, I total believe it! I had a small mishap, so I called them to see if the body panels were all the same and asked what the cost would be. Guess what! There was no charge, they sent them out at their expense! I have always owned trucks from other manufacturers, but never got this kind of service. Keep up the good work!” “Derek is a true straight shooter, which, as we all know, is hard to find in business these days. He builds both an excellent product that is second to none, while doing it at an economical price. The CB30HD he built for us is a true beast. He will walk you through the building process from start to finish, and even point you in the right direction on where to find a good used chassis to put one of his units on. My wife (and business partner) and I intend on either buying another one of his products that has been previously used or having him build us another truck when we are ready to expand our business again. Keep up the good work, Derek!” “Great products, great people, and great workmanship, they stand behind their product 100%.” “Nick and Derek are awesome; don’t think you’ll find anyone else in the business who cares more about their customers than they do.”
