Is it just me or has 2024 been a whirlwind of a year so far! The 1st quarter kicked off with the #1 show in the market put on by our friends at the PWOF! The Florida Tow show was better than ever, and as this issue hits the interwebs, the show season is upon us. Make sure that you and your family add to your schedule: TPRNC’s Mid Atlantic Tow Show, held in Raleigh, NC Sept 5th -7th. I personally attended the show last year. That was the first year to be held indoors with the new association management. Karrie Fog and her board members who brought in over 50 vendors and 850 + attendees. It was a great success for all, and a show you will not want to miss this year! Make sure you contact the staff at 919-921-8194 and get your booth reserved today. You will not regret it. The Midwest Regional Show is the following week in Wilmington, Ohio at the Roberts Centre. This place is amazing with onsite camping & showers, and this year, they added a new event, “A Celebration of Life,” which happens Thursday, and this event will end evening with a pig roast at the campgrounds on site. This is one of the best family shows after 46 years and is still growing! Make sure you get your booth now by calling 513-831-7469, or visit www.midwesttowshow.org
In this issue, DJ Harrington with his “Fuel for Thought,” looks at our very own podcast, Tow Professional “On the Go Podcast.” This podcast gives insight to the latest product and services while standing for the flag and kneeling for the cross. Our listeners have propelled its success to over 14k listeners worldwide and # 1 in our market. Dan Messina’s installment of “Insightful Talk,” focuses on future drivers. This is on point and a look into the need for good employees and keyways to retain them. Michelle Sukow brings it home in her column the “Women of Towing.” Michelle reminds us of the biggest time waster, Procrastination. This is one that hits home with me as I write this Publishers letter the day before print.
This issue is centered around our 2024 Buyer’s Guide, including an A-Z listing of companies doing business in this market, and category listings of those manufacturers, dealers, distributors, and service providers to assist in your purchasing needs for your business. Zips looks at the difference between synthetic & steel line, and how to know what works best for you. Tru-Hitch shows us their solution to heavy towing when it comes to 5th wheel attachments. Worldwide Equipment showcases their products, showing that when it comes to Trailers, they have the solutions to get the job done.
We again thank our readers and our vendors and are very proud to be a part of this amazing industry! Until next time, be safe and God bless!

Transitioning your in-person impound, abandoned, or unclaimed vehicle auction to entirely online can be a lucrative move for towing business owners, if done correctly. You can attract a wider base of bidders, reduce your liability by avoiding crowds on your property, and have greater data to measure your performance and improve your success.
Here are some smart practices you can adopt to help you launch a successful online vehicle auction: Ensure full commitment and readiness
for the change across your entire team. Success of online auctions requires dedication and focus, so buy-in from every stakeholder is critical.
Choose a robust and reliable auction management software and participate in comprehensive training sessions with your Customer Success Managers who will guide you through the process and provide ongoing support.
Define clear job roles and responsibilities within your team such as Auction Manager, Inventory Manager, and Cashier/Title Clerk, etc., to ensure operations go as smoothly as possible.
Reach out to previous buyers and key customers to notify them of your online auction platform and encourage their participation.
Integrate a link to your auction website from your towing website and establish a strong social media presence to promote your auctions regularly.
Capture high-quality photos of your inventory from various angles to attract more buyers and drive higher bids.
Schedule consistent auctions at regular intervals to maintain buyer interest and engagement. Stick to a set schedule to cultivate a loyal following. Send auction reminders, updates, and promotions via email to your buyer list to keep your audience engaged and informed.
Making the conversion from traditional in-person auctions to onlineonly auctions can be a daunting move. That’s why there are software solutions out there backed by expert support teams who are dedicated to your success and become your partner throughout the entire journey.

Procrastination is a challenge faced by professionals in every industry, and towing is no exception. I am the absolute worst procrastinator when it comes to many things (just ask my publishing editor). It's like I’ve got a PhD in putting certain things off. I cannot stand it when others procrastinate, but somehow, when it's me, I just turn a blind eye and pretend it's not happening. Hypocrisy at its finest, right? Sorry, Darian. This article is about digging deeper into why procrastination is so pervasive in the towing industry, what factors create a perfect storm for procrastination to thrive, and how we can navigate the road ahead to remove that obstacle.
Why is procrastination so particularly rampant in the towing industry? It is due to the high-pressure, unpredictable nature of the work. Towing professionals often face irregular hours, unexpected emergency calls, dealing with the thin white line, and the constant need to be on alert, which can lead to feelings of overwhelm and stress. I guess I didn’t really rock your world with that info, did I? This environment makes it easy to delay tasks that do not seem immediately critical, especially when the urgent demands of the job are ever-present. Additionally, the lack of
structured schedules and clear priorities can contribute to disorganization, making it challenging to stay on top of administrative tasks, maintenance, and other essential duties. Any lightbulbs going off? The fear of making mistakes under pressure can also cause individuals to put off tasks, further exacerbating the cycle of procrastination. Does any of this sound familiar? In the fastpaced, unpredictable world of towing, procrastination can have significant consequences, affecting everything from customer satisfaction to operational efficiency. Understanding the roots of procrastination and implementing strategies to combat it can lead to better performance and a more successful towing business.
1. Customer Dissatisfaction
• Delays in responding to towing requests can result in unhappy customers, negative reviews, and loss of business. Prompt and reliable service is crucial in this industry, where customers often find themselves in stressful situations.
2. Operational Inefficiency
• Procrastination can lead to missed opportunities, disorganized schedules, and inefficient use of
By understanding the underlying causes of procrastination and implementing targeted strategies to combat it, towing businesses can improve their responsiveness, streamline operations, and create a more positive and productive work environment.
resources. When tasks are delayed, the ripple effect can disrupt the entire workflow, causing bottlenecks and reducing overall productivity.
3. Employee Morale
• A culture of procrastination can negatively impact employee morale. When team members consistently delay tasks, it creates a stressful environment, increases workloads, and can lead to burnout.
4. Home Life
• Pushing off going home, getting to other events late or missing time with our family because we feel that work must get done now creates a vicious cycle of stress and resentment. When we consistently choose work over family time, it breeds frustration and bitterness among loved ones who feel neglected. This resentment seeps into our home life, escalating tensions and adding more stress to our already burdened shoulders.
Understanding the Roots of Procrastination
1. Overwhelm and Stress
• The unpredictable nature of towing can be overwhelming. The constant need to be on call, coupled with the pressure to deliver excellent service, can lead to stress-induced procrastination.
2. Lack of Clear Priorities
• Without clear priorities, it is easy to become bogged down with less important tasks, pushing critical ones to the back burner. This lack of focus can stem from poor time management or unclear objectives.
3. Fear of Failure
• In some cases, procrastination is driven by a fear of failure. The fear of not meeting expectations can cause individuals to delay starting tasks, hoping to avoid potential mistakes.
1. Set Clear Priorities and Goals
• Establishing clear priorities and setting specific, achievable goals can help focus efforts on what matters most. Breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps can make them less daunting and easier to tackle.
• Adopting time management techniques such as the Pomodoro Technique, time blocking, or the Eisenhower Matrix can help structure the workday and reduce procrastination. These methods encourage a disciplined approach to handling tasks.
Do you know a towing lady who deserves recognition?
Please send Michelle Sukow or Tow Professional a message. We would love to share her story! (michelle@michellesukow.com)
• Creating a supportive and collaborative work environment can help reduce procrastination. Encouraging open communication, offering regular feedback, and providing the necessary resources and training can empower employees to take the initiative and stay on track.
4. Address Stress and Overwhelm
• Providing stress management resources, promoting work-life balance, and offering support during high-pressure times can help reduce the overwhelm that leads to procrastination. Encouraging regular breaks and self-care practices can also improve focus and productivity.
5. Use Technology to Streamline Operations
• Leveraging technology to automate routine tasks, manage schedules, and track progress can reduce the administrative burden and free up time for more critical activities. Tools such as CRM systems, dispatch software, and mobile apps can enhance efficiency and minimize delays.
Procrastination in the towing industry is not just a minor inconvenience—it can have serious repercussions for customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, employee morale, and your work-life blend. By understanding the underlying causes of procrastination and implementing targeted strategies to combat it, towing businesses can improve their responsiveness, streamline operations, and create a more positive and productive work environment.

Iremember when I got into towing I knew nothing about the towing industry. Our business was private property towing, which again, I knew nothing about. I had 5 trucks and 8 drivers and I watched them daily fight over trucks. My trucks were old so they all wanted the trucks that would run. I actually had drivers that would sabotage the trucks so they knew when they
started their shift they knew they had a truck to get into.
Then I had dispatchers that were getting gifts from drivers in exchange for call in tows. At this point I was wondering what I got myself into. My experience in management I learned to form my own opinion and evaluate people based on my experience with them and don’t believe everything you were told.
I was running this company 30 years ago, so the driver of today is different. The first thing I wanted to do is learn as much as possible about my employees. I have always preached that your employees are your biggest asset, and I wanted nothing but the best. Knowing your employees would be a key to building a successful business. I asked each employee to fill out a questioner
about the following based on a scale of one to ten with ten being good:
1. How do you rate your job performance?
2. How do you rate your job knowledge?
3. How do you rate your attitude?
4. How do you rate the moral of the company?
5. How do you rate management?
Here is what I learned from their answers:
1. If they had an attitude about the questions, I could correct it without making it an issue.
2. I could see if I had a management problem.
3. They all thought their performance was outstanding.
4. They all thought they knew everything needed to perform the job.
5. I learned about the moral of the company and what I had to do to make it better.
In today’s world I would not even be allowed to ask your employees these types of questions. I talked to tower
BY DAN MESSINA ///
in Minnesota who told me his drivers come in when they want and go home when they want. One driver has purple hair and it hard to put someone like that in front of their customers. They expect breaks and salary increases in a timely manner. With employees like this it is hard to successfully run the company.
When I first got into towing I learned quickly that all towers have tattoos. I don’t have a problem with them, but I knew what I wanted my employees to look like. I would go to Sam’s or Home Depot and find someone I thought would fit into my company. I’d approach them and offer them an opportunity for a exciting career. These people went through a screening
process that I would not have to do. I could offer them a salary increase, and their appearance was good enough to put them in front of my customers. I screened 5, 2 of them were hired. I trained them way I wanted them to tow and they turned out to be good employees.
Once I had the staff I had to figure out how to keep them. They knew they were constantly under review, so they worked hard to do their best. Here are a few incentives I offered to keep them happy:
1. Raises – You can always make someone happy with money.
2. Bonuses – extra money if they tow a required number of cars.
3. Truck Preference – Drivers love their trucks. If they were exceptional, I would let them pick out their own truck and buy it for them.
4. I offered schedule preferences
5. Extra equipment like tools, chains, or go-jacks.
6. Time off, I encouraged them to spend time with their families.
7. Lunch, movie tickets, and envelope pulls. I had 35 employees, and I would put 50 envelopes on the wall. Each envelope had money in it. All employees drew an envelope, so they all got something.
8. Training and certification testing
9. Acknowledgment in from of all their peers.
“We have many good programs out there that could be used to teach future drivers, and plenty of experienced drivers that could teach hands-on when required.”
10. Finally, a good old pat on the back to let them know you acknowledge their performance.
Finding employees in todays world is difficult. You have to be politically correct about everything.
1. Run classified ads in newspapers if you can find a newspaper
2. Job fairs – This is unorthodox for the towing industry
3. Recruiting agencies – This could cost money
4. Networking – You can’t network because that person is looking for
5. Social media, or websites. Again, this cost money and its hard for owners to use these methods.
6. Mobile apps can be helpful if you know how to find the right app.
7. Employee referrals always works, but drivers will not recommend anyone better than them.
Finding drivers for the next ten years will be hard. There will be no family members to leave your company to.
Employees of the future are always on the phone and are not used to the steps required to tow a car, or handle equipment necessary to perform a tow. I run two
companies and I always have trouble finding good employees. They want maximum dollars, they want to work from home, and they want to work their hours.
I would love to open up a trade school for blue collar workers and teach them the towing industry. We have many good programs out there that could be used to teach future drivers, and plenty of experienced drivers that could teach hands-on when required. Associations could get together and set up a nice program that benefits all tow companies. Go to the national association and ask them to get involved.

I have authored an article in this magazine and without fail finish with this line, “See you on the next podcast.” For some who do not know, this publication has a great podcast, and I am proud to be a part of it as your Co-Host on the Tow Professional’s, “On-the-Go podcast. We are living in a content-driven

With a computer, you can type the word PODCAST into Google access, and the first few results will give you several choices. The good thing is
most podcasts are free.
If you want to up your towing game, you should listen to our Tow Professional podcast. Why, you ask. Lots of our listeners are multitasking while driving, cleaning, or working at the office and other regulars listen while they are working out.
Since our podcasts are always archived, they can be heard anytime, day
or night. We feature industry experts like: Brian Ricker explaining safety and compliance, the great Tom Luciano and Bill Johnson, President of TRAA, gave a wonderful update of our industry. We have also had a guest attorney, Kelsey Eckert, discuss downtime claims and how to protect your bottom line. Matt Boileau from Parking Pass was a guest too, and here is one all of us need to hear
and obviously repeat…Michelle Sukow, a former Tow Woman of the Year. Now, that was a fantastic podcast which everyone could learn from Michelle. One of the most listened to podcasts was Richard GUTTMAN, from Jerr-Dan. I am happy to report that Richard is a product specialist who works with JerrDan. That podcast was informative and also archived.

And of course, we had to have my friends from Auto-Data Direct on the podcast. This is a great company. Frank Toms and Matt Harvey did a stellar job explaining all the ends and outs of AutoData Direct. Speaking of great guys, how about Dalan Zartman, from Energy Security Agencies. There are so many great

Wes also has a great podcast, but he came on our podcast and did an excellent job for our listeners. It is one of the most listened to podcasts, along with our friend, Bruce Zinder, from the Midwest Regional Tow Show, the most family-friendly show of the year.
Folks, our podcasts are stacking up, and there are almost one hundred podcasts for you to listen to right now. They are all extremely good, and some of course are even better. My favorite was Griffen and Griffen, a tow company from Columbus, Georgia. Next was Jim Shellhaas’s Innovative Approach to Parking Management. That was an informative podcast.
I know each of you have a favorite podcast. Some will tell me it is Dan
Messina. Let me know which one you really like and particularly if you are an association. Also, please let Darian Weaver, the real host of the show, know which podcast you prefer. Darian is also the President and Publisher of this publication.
Please let us know news about your state association that needs broadcasting, things like upcoming shows or key information about this wonderful industry. We would be incredibly happy

I started this article by saying that I am so proud of being the Co-host of the show. I love it when people at the Florida Tow Show stop me and say that they love the podcast, and that Darian and I do an

When you get called for a tow, you want your towing equipment to be available as quickly as possible. If it is, you can attach the Tru-Hitch™ fifth wheel towing device to your tractor in two minutes and get on the road! No modifications to your tractor are necessary and if you need it for another use, the Tru-Hitch™ can be detached just as quickly.
In contrast, most fifth wheel towing devices require more time to install and uninstall. The 35K winch option utilizes spade caps over the booms to stabilize a tractor to pull up to 100K pounds for recovery winching.
When coupled to the Tru-Hitch™, the truck in tow simply becomes a semi-trailer allowing any fifth wheel tractor to transport the towed load. A short wheelbase tractor is preferred for maneuverability in tight areas, while a long wheelbase sleeper cab tractor can be used for long distances.
Operation is safe and simpleoverloaded axles cannot occur with the Tru-Hitch™. Any heavy truck can be towed down the road with the efficiency of a fifth-wheel tractor hauling any other commodity of freight.
“The Tru-Hitch™ is the perfect complement to your towing operation fleet and will give you full capability for heavy duty transporting and recovery – adding to your bottom line!”
A Tru-Hitch™ on a 16K tractor can lift up to 32,000 lbs. and can tow up to a gross combined weight rating of 140,000 lb. In addition, it:
• Does not overload drive axles; evenly loaded axles extend tire and brake life and provide optimum steering and braking
• Needs no special tractors or modifications
• Does not create a lightened or unsafe steering axle
• Does not cause uneven braking
• Is easily maneuverable; does not cause pinch points in sharp turns
• Is safer and more efficient on long distance tows
• Has lower purchase, operating and maintenance costs
The Tru-Hitch™ is the perfect complement to your towing operation fleet and will give you full capability for heavy duty transporting and recovery – adding to your bottom line! Visit truhitch.com for more information call 1-800-450-8659 or 860-379-7772 to order your Tru-Hitch™ today.
Let’s face it, equipment is expensive, and the economic stability of the near future is uncertain; so, when adding equipment to your fleet, it is critical to get the most bang for the buck. That is where trailers come into play for an innovative tow fleet owner.
Have you ever noticed that all the major trucking companies have three or four trailers for every one tractor in their fleet? They do this because trailers are relatively inexpensive to own, operate and let sit for extended periods between peak hauling or specialized freight seasons. Extra trailers are an excellent way to rapidly shift from one area of focus to another as market demands shift.
For towers, especially medium and heavy duty companies, trailers are must-have units with limitless uses. From sliding axle trailers for hauling wrecked vehicles off the freeway to specialized detachable neck units and even multi-car trailers, there is something for every fleet.
Before buying any trailer, you must have an idea of what you are trying to transport and the market for such services. Freight and machinery transport doesn’t pay the same as emergency towing although many shippers will pay a small premium for the fast service towing companies are known for providing.
A typical entry level trailer is the sliding axle trailer. This trailer is popular because the learning curve for operation is slim since they work very similar to a rollback. These trailers come in a variety of lengths and axle configurations with 48’ and 53’ tandem axle units being the most popular.
Detachable neck, aka RGN trailers, allow for a lower-loaded deck height as well as a greater ability to handle tracked machines with booms like excavators. When selecting an RGN, the “well length” is very important as this is where the cargo will be carried. The longer the well, the larger machines you can fit.
As your transport division expands
there are many other concepts to explore. Expandable deck trailers, sometimes called a “bus” trailer, have a well that is adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of loads. Others have extendable sides to support wider loads or special wheel cutouts to accommodate tractors and other agricultural equipment.
High-mount auto transport trailers are a great fit for towing companies as
well. They can be pulled with a typical road tractor and allow you to transport 5-8 cars in one trip. Consider using your tow trucks to pick up vehicles local to your yard (as backhauls from tow calls) then loading these units onto a trailer for the trip to the auction. This will create additional revenue, albeit at wholesale
rates, and may make auto transport work cost effective, especially in more rural areas.
Bottom line, trailers are an integral part of expanding your offerings as a towing company. They are excellent front line pieces of equipment, not just support units.
The type of winch line you use depends on the type of work you do. Some tow operators trust synthetic winch line for all of their recovery work. Others like to use steel rope for heavy-duty jobs and synthetic lines for light-duty applications.
Each type has its own advantages and drawbacks, and the choice may come down to personal preference. Zip’s AW Direct stocks a wide variety of both options and has offered to compare the two in this article. We’ll start the discussion by looking at the pros and cons of synthetic line and then explore
the different options of steel rope available at Zips.com.
The first thing you’ll likely notice about synthetic line is its weight savings over steel rope. Synthetic line is eight times lighter than steel but equally as strong in pulling capacity, providing a great strength-to-weight ratio. Synthetic line is so light it floats, making it perfect for water recoveries. Impervious to water, the rope is also resistant to UV rays and chemicals, keeping it cleaner
and easier to maintain.
Besides being lighter, synthetic line is also safer to handle than its steel counterpart. Steel strands can often fray and cause cuts and slivers for the operator without proper hand protection. Synthetic line, on the other hand, can be handled without gloves most of the time. Synthetic rope is also “torqueneutral,” so the line won’t twist and a swivel hook or shackle is not always necessary under a load.
Consisting of braided plasma fibers, synthetic line also features low-stretch properties and holds no memory, meaning it just falls limp when severed. Unlike steel cable, there is no whiplash effect to cause serious injury to the operator. If it is damaged, synthetic rope can also be repaired in the field.
Thanks to its exceptional handling and maintenance characteristics, synthetic rope is gaining in popularity across the towing industry, according to Zip’s
rigging expert Jeff Lechtenberg. As operators weigh the benefits, Lechtenberg offers the following recommendation when deciding to go with synthetic line on your carrier or wrecker.
“With the proper precautions, synthetic winch lines can be used anywhere a steel winch line can. You just need to make sure the synthetic lines avoid contact with any sharp edges that may cut the line,” Lechtenberg said. “This includes making sure that the winch drum or fairlead doesn’t have any sharp burs on them. You’ll also want to use compatible rigging tools to avoid trouble areas on any wreckage.”
For traditionalists, steel cable still has a home in towing. Operators here are comfortable with its time-tested strength and durability and are willing to live with the extra weight in return. Unlike synthetic rope, they also like how steel cable typically holds up better to jagged edges, although direct contact
with sharp material should be avoided whenever possible, as Lechtenberg indicated above.
Zip’s offer four varieties of steel winch line, including fiber core and steel core. These wrapped lines both feature extra improved plow steel for strength and flexibility. The fiber core rope secretes an internal lubricant under pressure to prevent corrosion, while the steel core offers greater crush resistance and a higher nominal strength.
Another style of steel winch line is called super swaged. For this type, the rope starts off as the next size bigger but, through a process called swaging, is compressed down to the next size smaller. As a result, the outer wires have a larger surface area than standard winch lines. The working load limit remains the same as the original diameter. The compact design offers greater strength than standard winch lines of the same size. Although less flexible, they also provide better resistance to abrasion, kinking and drum crushing.
The last type of winch line to review today is super flex wire rope. This type of winch line offers better performance and increased longevity by containing more wires within a given diameter. This design makes the line more resistant to wear and tear and results in less fatigue.
Visit Zips.com to learn more about synthetic and steel winch lines. On our blog and product pages, you can find a handy sizing guide and complete information on lengths, diameters and working load limits. After doing your own research, you’ll find the type and style you are most comfortable using in the field.
