RANDY WISE HOMES AND UNITED BANK PRESENTS CHECKS TO TAYLOR HAUGEN FOUNDATION AND SPECIAL FORCES ASSOCIATION-CHAPTER VII
Randy Wise Homes and United Bank were proud to split the proceeds from the sale of a Mill Creek Farms home to benefit the Taylor Haugen Foundation and the Special Forces Association, Chapter VII. In August, Randy Wise and Robert Jones presented checks in the amount of $50,534 each to the two organizations to give back to the community, and to honor the memory of a special young man and our Special Forces military and their families. “We call this our Community Spirit House, as this project is another example of how our community comes together to assist local organizations to accomplish their missions and to do good. Bob Jones and his team at United Bank stepped up to donate the homesite the home is built on. We are thrilled with this partnership we have formed. We are extremely grateful for our local vendors and subcontractors who gave free or discounted services and products for the home. Our employees are the heart and soul of our company. We are very proud of the talented team of professionals that came together for this project. Their dedication, attention to detail and desire to exceed expectations is the driving force of our success,” remarked Randy Wise.
RISE has schedule its Special Forces Ground Breaking Event for October 18, 2019 at 9am at Brooks Elementary School, 109 McGriff Street, Fort Walton Beach. Up to 30 Green Berets will be onsite working and preparing the property for its new future. The Brooks Christian Academy will be a home for youth transitioning out of foster care providing education and training in the construction industry and entrepreneurship. Every child counts and every child deserves a future. RISE invites the entire community and all area businesses to become involved. To learn more about RISE and to donate to this cause, please go to www. riseth.org or www.McGriffcdcorp.org. If you would like additional information and how to become involved please call Rev. Willie Farrow 850-865-6029 or Kevin Reeves 850-830-9500.
“We are honored to be a part of this charitable donation. Through this partnership, United Bank and Randy Wise Homes were able to further the mission of the Taylor Haugen Foundation and Special Forces Association, Chapter VII. Locally, the Taylor Haugen Foundation supported the Northview High School Chiefs football team, outfitting them with high tech performance protective rib shirts. At United Bank, we have a multi bottom line mission - focused commitment to improve the lives of our customers by building resilient and vibrant communities in the areas we serve,” said Bob Jones, United Bank. Special Forces Association President Amil Alvarez said, “Randy is an authentic and servant leader who always seeks to improve the community he is a part of. He is a great supporter of the military and through the years, has been instrumental in improving the lives of numerous active duty service members, veterans, and their families. The Special Forces Association appreciate his support and leadership.”
Renderings for the new Brooks Christian Academy that will have the capacity to accommodate up to 200 students.
“There are just no words to describe Randy Wise’s passion, charity and selflessness. He consistently and humbly does charitable works for the community and we are simply honored to be a recipient of his benevolence. And we thank Bob Jones and United Bank for supporting the outfitting of Northview High School Chiefs football team with abdominal protective gear,” stated Brian and Kathy Haugen. The home, located at 1486 Mill Creek Drive is the Live Oak II floorplan and features 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2,618 square feet and is another Southern-style brick bungalow home in the rich, wooded area of Mill Creek Farms, where small-scale gardening, large 2/3 plus acre homesites, and a rural setting are enticing new home buyers. COMMUNITY The Beginning RISE (Recruit-Insight-Support-Educate) was formed with the desire to provide educational support for our youth. The initial target of the organization was the youth assigned to Department of Juvenile Justice. However, it was quickly determined that the need was far greater. Looking for support, two local nonprofits came forward; Kemp Development Center and The McGriff Community Development and Services Corporation. RISE then reached out to Okaloosa Technical College, to provide a supporting curriculum. Upon learning that The McGriff Community Development and Services Corporation along with Beulah First Baptist Church had acquired Brooks Elementary School, it was determined that Brooks Elementary School could serve as an excellent venue to teach youth construction trades. The RISE leadership team then began to look at the feasibility of remodeling the Brooks Elementary School as an historical landmark. The school has a rich history that began when Fort Walton Beach was known as Camp Walton.
church became the core of the community’s Spiritual, Educational, and Social life. It was the church and the school that served as shelter in the time of floods and hurricanes. The two buildings were the only place where the colored community could safely gather in large numbers. This gave a sense of freedom and normalcy to the residents of the quarters. In-spite-of or maybe because of segregation, separatism, and Jim Crow, many of the students of Brooks Elementary School, have gone on to do great things. They persevered and have come out triumphantly, as the world watched their careers play out on the national stage. Most notably among them are: Al (Alexander) Green, representative for the 9th district of Houston Texas. Congressman Green attended Florida A&M University and Tuskegee University. He received a law degree from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. Dr. Oscar L (Pewee) Montgomery, pastor of Union Hill Primitive Baptist Church in Huntsville Alabama. Dr. Montgomery has a PhD in theology and also earned a Doctorate in Agronomy from Purdue University. He is a retired professor at Alabama A&M University. There are many more students who have achieved greatness in the face of adversity. Most have gone on to earn degrees and advanced degrees or training in fields that sustain themselves and their families. In the face of racism and mistreatment by the school board we have stepped over all the blocks that were put in our path. No weapon formed against thee shall prosper. Isaiah 54:17
The Future The excitement of this project has grown with the added help of: community builders, the Future Builders of America (FBA), the education community, and the Department of Juvenile Justice.
The History of Brooks School It is impossible to write the history of Brooks School without recognizing, The Colored Community Church. It was the church that took on the duty of starting the education of its children. The existence of Brooks School and that of the church is forever entwined. The school would not exist had it not been for the actions of the church. The parents of the ever-increasing number of school age children, some of whom could not read or write themselves, wanted better for their children. These mothers and fathers were good, common, hardworking people. They lived in an area located in the center of Camp Walton, in a place called the quarters. It spanned a distance of about two miles in any direction. In a time of segregation and Jim Crow, they lived a separate and unequal life. There was no school for the colored children of Camp Walton, but there were some trained teachers who began classes in their homes. There was also no place or time for worship, except after work at night, so they began bible study and Sunday worship services in their homes. From these two needs; a school for the children, and a place to worship, came the Colored Community Church. The school and 18
