MEET THE 2019 BIA PRESIDENT DOUG LILES, SOUTHERN HYBRID HOMES How long have you been in the area? I’ve been a frequent visitor of the area since I was a baby, and have lived here for over 20 years. What is your educational background? I have a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Combined Sciences with a specialty in Microbiology from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
“80% of success in life is showing up. Showing up for BIA’s various events, after hours, and education seminars is important and will benefit both the BIA and your business.”
What was your first job? When I was 14 years old, I worked for a Veterinarian and assisted in the care of animals. Tell us about your family life. I have five beautiful children, ages 12-39, and 4 grandchildren with a 5th on the way! What do you like to do in your spare time? I’m a big fan of being outdoors as much as possible. I enjoy golf, tennis, marksmanship, and spending time with family. How has BIA membership benefited you and your business? Being part of a group of folks with common interests and establishing meaningful connections and friendships, has brought many valuable resources to my business. Because of the abundance of contacts I’ve acquired from being a part of the BIA, the ability to get help and questions answered efficiently if an issue arises has been the biggest benefit. What do you see as the biggest challenge that the BIA of Okaloosa-Walton Counties faces? Apathy. 80% of success in life is showing up. Showing up for BIA’s various events, after hours, and education seminars is important and will benefit both the BIA and your business. What is the state of the building industry in our local area? I think it’s the best I’ve ever seen it. However, I encourage local businesses to take into mind the financial crisis of 2008, and continue to pay down debt and save for the future. What are your goals for 2019 as the President of the BIA? My primary goal is to get more South Walton Builders involved with the BIA. One of the ways I will do that is putting together a monthly BIA Breakfast occurring on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 9:00 AM in South Walton.

THE BIA IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT YEAR!! I can’t tell you how excited I am about what we have planned for this year. First, let me wish each of you a peaceful and prosperous new year filled with many blessings. The New Year always brings with it a fresh, crisp feeling, and I’m not talking about that cold northern breeze nipping at your nose and ears. It’s like a new beginning, a new era, or a fresh start to what could become the best year ever for the BIA. I am excited about the year ahead and I am looking forward to working with our new 2019 BIA President Doug Liles (Southern Hybrid Homes). Doug brings 30+ years of experience as a general contractor and is both energetic and positive about the opportunities for the BIA and I know he will provide the leadership necessary to lead our association this year.
final plans were not completed for the event). The registration form can be found at www.biaow.org, seating is limited, so make your reservations today.
Let’s begin the New Year by congratulating the 2018 Builder of the Year Andy Wilson (Wilson Enterprises) and Associate of the Year Kenny Kilpatrick (Okaloosa Gas) on their selection for these accolades. Andy was our 2018 BIA President and the builder of the 2018 Emerald Coast Dream Home. Both Andy and Kenny are deserving of these awards due to their commitment to the BIA and the industry, and I appreciate all they do through their involvement with the association.
On a final note, make the BIA one of your new year’s resolutions, one that you keep! This is a great time to get involved in the BIA to make the most of your membership. Committees are gearing up for the year ahead, and you can get in on the ground floor of all the goings-on at the BIA. Together we can grow this organization to new heights in terms of service and participation and have fun in the process. Take a few minutes to call Jennifer Fleming or myself to discuss how you and your business can make the most of your INVESTMENT with the BIA.
Your BIA has great things in store for you in 2019 starting with our first general membership meeting the 2019 Economic & Housing Forecast Breakfast. This year’s breakfast is a partnership with our friends at the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors and will feature one of the best lineups of speakers we have ever had. (At the time of the writing of this article
As a member of the BIA (and those of you that are not members currently) the celebration of the New Year is an occasion for opportunity and involvement. I liken the BIA to the Chamber of Commerce of Construction and as a member we provide you with a vast number of resources in your membership toolbox. As a member, you receive the benefits and resources of three associations; The BIA, the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). For those who don’t get the picture, just imagine what the construction industry and your business, would be like if the BIA didn’t exist. You would have no “VOICE” on local, state and national laws and regulations that could add thousands of dollars to your operating cost.
All the Best,
Alan Baggett Alan Baggett, Executive Vice President

A NEW LIFE FOR A LOCAL HERO
Congratulations to Kenny and Andy and thank you both for your continued support of the BIA!
A new home on Sunset Cove in Bluewater Bay, designed to specifically accommodate wounded warrior, Army Green Beret Staff Sergeant Bobby Dove, was presented to Sgt. Dove, his wife and family by the Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. Program on December 5th. Sgt. Bobby Dove, who served with the Army’s 7th Special Forces Group at Eglin Air Force Base until his retirement in 2014, lost most of his right leg and right arm to an IED explosion in Afghanistan six years ago. Sgt. Dove will now have a home to not only meet his needs but improve his and his family’s quality of life. Numerous people and businesses involved in the building of the Dove home, including local Home Depot manager Jaime San Miguel and project contractor Jennifer Jones of Compass Builders of Florida, welcomed the Doves to their new home.
THANK YOU A huge Thank You to ERA American Real Estate, Gloria Frazier and Team, for sponsoring our BUILD with the BIA video series and helping us launch this wonderful project! With an average of almost 10,000 views per video, we’re all working to educate the community one video at a time! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
The Gary Sinise foundation builds eight to ten homes for veterans each year with the help of national sponsors and local contractors. The Dove’s new home is one of 70 homes already provided to veterans through the R.I.S.E. program.

EMERALD COAST CONVENTION CENTER OKALOOSA ISLAND
AN EVENT
FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Be sure to stop by the Okaloosa $aves table to vote for your favorite piggy bank. Youth bank entry winners will be announced on February 23rd and will receive cash awards. The 40th annual BIA Home Show will be held at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on the Okaloosa Island on Saturday February 23rd from 9:00am-5:00pm and Sunday February 24th from 11:00am-4:00pm. The Home Show features indoor exhibit booths filled with information on products and services for those who plan to build new homes or wish to remodel or even just “spruce up” their current homes. Last year’s Home Show had over 2,000 attendees over the two-day event! Spend the whole day at our show with your family! Informational seminars and tons of booths to view are just some of the things you can do at the 2019 Home Show. Our popular informational seminars include seminars on lawn care, remodeling ideas, crime prevention, and more. Our informational seminars are a great way to learn about products and services offered by our local builders and associates. Advance tickets for the event can be purchased for $2.00 at any Eglin Federal Credit Union branch locations beginning in February. You can also buy your tickets at the door for $5.00. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Those attendees with military IDs receive $1.00 off of your ticket price at the door. The monies earned by the tickets sold for the event, is used for the BIA’s community affairs projects as well as our scholarship funds. This year, Okaloosa $aves will be at the BIA Home Show on Saturday February 23rd to display their Piggy Bank contest entries for public judging. In addition, Okaloosa $aves will be signing up Savers for prize drawings, and to receive copies of the America Saves newsletters and other offers from Okaloosa $aves throughout the year.
Okaloosa $aves is a coalition of volunteers in Okaloosa County under the national America Saves program in conjunction with the University of Florida/IFAS Extension, with a mission to encourage individuals to build wealth and reduce debt. Okaloosa $aves provides free financial information, educational programs, and many other events. This year we have partnered with the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors (ECAR) for our Home Show to offer a larger variety of vendors and seminars for all of your home buying and remodeling needs. You don’t have to be a member of the BIA to become a vendor in our event. Check out our website, www.biaow.org for the official rules and entry form.

5 EASY STEPS TO HOME OWNERSHIP
EVERYTHING LOCAL START TO FINISH! PRE-QUALIFICATION
Start with a complementary pre-qualification and see what price range of home you would qualify for.
LOCAL APPLICATION
Once you have settled on your choice of home, we’ll walk you through the application process.
LOCAL PROCESSING
Once your loan request is submitted, all processing activities are conducted locally.
LOCAL UNDERWRITING
When your loan is ready, it’s not packaged and sent out of State. Our staff of Local Underwriters will review your file.
LOCAL CLOSING
Once your file receives an approval, our local closing department works directly with your title company to prepare for your closing.
ONE TIME CLOSE! CONSTRUCTION-PERM VA & Conventional
