Welcome!

It’s Going to Be a Great Year of Opportunity! Alan Baggett, Executive Vice President

First let me wish each of you a prosperous new year filled with many blessings. I am excited about the year ahead and I am looking forward to working with our new President, Jerremy Whitehead. Jerremy is both energetic and positive about the opportunities and I know he will provide the leadership necessary to get the job done very effectively. I welcome our new board members and officers, and I challenge them to work diligently with me in the pursuit of greater things for the BIA. As a member of the BIA (and those of you that are not members currently) the celebration of the New Year is an occasion for opportunity and involvement. I liken the BIA to the Chamber of Commerce of Construction and as a member we provide you with a vast number of resources in your membership toolbox. As a member you receive the benefits and resources of three associations; The BIA, the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). For those who don’t get the picture, just imagine what the construction industry and your business, would be like if the BIA didn’t exist. You would have no “VOICE” on local, state and national laws and regulations that could add thousands of dollars to your operating cost. We have noticed a real change in the makeup of our members and imagine not being able to go home to your family because

you have to attend a local city commission, county and state planning meeting. You have invested in the BIA because we offer and do things that are TOO DIFFICULT!!! TOO EXPENSIVE!!!TOO IMPOSSIBLE!!! for a individual or business to do own their own. Your BIA is your resource for construction contracts, legal services, building code questions, education, networking, member discounts, access to industry experts, and so much more. Know that the overall objective of the BIA is to create a climate where builders can do what they do best “BUILD” and as a result provides a climate for all of our related industry and trade partners. Looking to the future, BIA is deeply devoted to improving local building, supporting education and creating opportunities for young people to pursue rewarding careers in in the construction trades. On a final note, make the BIA one of your new year’s resolutions, one that you keep! This is a great time to get involved in the BIA to make the most of your membership. Committees are gearing up for the year ahead, and you can get in on the ground floor of all the goings-on at the BIA. Together we can grow this organization to new heights in terms of service and participation and have fun in the process. Take a few minutes to call Jennifer Fleming or myself to discuss how you and your business can make the most of your OPPORTUNITY with the BIA. All the Best,

Alan

Meet the 2016 BIA President Jerremy Whitehead, Southern Paradise Homes, Inc. How long have you been in the area?

I am an Emerald Coast native, born and raised in the Fort Walton Beach-Destin area.

What is your educational background?

I attended Choctawhatchee High School and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from The University of West Florida.

What was your first job?

“The work force is getting older and the younger generation is not coming into the building industry. We need to create interest for the youth with incentives to rebuild the workforce.”

My first job was a lifeguard at the Waterslide on Okaloosa Island at age 14.  I started working with my Dad in the construction industry at age 15.

Tell us about your family life.

My beautiful wife Tracy is a Registered Nurse at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. We have been very blessed with adorable twin girls Emma and Brooke.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time I enjoy gatherings with family and friends, fresh or salt water fishing and college football.

What do you see as the biggest challenges for the building industry?

The work force is getting older and the younger generation is not coming into the building industry. We need to create interest for the youth with incentives to rebuild the workforce.

What is the state of the building industry in our local area?

We are all so fortunate to live in such a great area for the building industry from the year round homeowners, vacation homes, rentals and our military families. Building is definitely on the upswing.

What are your goals for 2016 as the President of the BIA?

Looking forward to working with existing members and growing our membership and to help our members to grow and prosper. I am very excited to be the 2016 BIA President.

The 37th annual BIA Home Show will be held at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on the Okaloosa Island on Saturday February 27th from 9:00am-5:00pm and Sunday February 28th from 11:00am-4:00pm. The Home Show features indoor exhibit booths filled with information on products and services for those who plan to build new homes or wish to remodel or even just “spruce up” their current homes. This year’s show will also feature many new “Green” Products and Services available now to our local area! Spend the whole day at our show with your family! Informational seminars and tons of booths to view are just some of the things you can do at the 2016 Home Show. Our popular informational seminars include seminars on lawn care, remodeling ideas, and more. Our informational seminars are a great way to learn about products and services offered by our local builders and associates. Advance tickets for the event can be purchased for $2.00 at any Eglin Federal Credit Union branch locations beginning in February. You can also buy your tickets at the door for $5.00. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Those attendees with military IDs receive $1.00 off of your ticket price at the door. This year we have partnered with Okaloosa $aves to make this event bigger and better! Okaloosa $aves is partnering with the BIA Home Show on Saturday February 27th to display their Piggy Bank contest entries for public judging, conduct several financial seminars including one on social security, and shopping with credit. In addition, Okaloosa Saves will be signing up Savers for prizes and to receive copies of the America Saves newsletters and other offers from Okaloosa $aves throughout the year. 8

The Voice | January 2016

Be sure to stop by the Okaloosa $aves table to vote for your favorite piggy bank. Youth bank entry winners will be announced at 4:00pm on February 27th and will receive cash awards. Okaloosa $aves is a coalition of volunteers in Okaloosa County under the national America Saves program with a mission to encourage individuals to build wealth and reduce debt. Okaloosa $aves provides free financial information, educational programs, and many other events. We are also partnering with SOCKS (Save Our Cats and Kittens) this year to present the Inaugural Kits for Cats project. We are looking for companies to build custom made Cat Trees / Furniture. These will be displayed at the Home Show and will be voted on by our attendees. This is a great opportunity to help SOCKS and get some great exposure with the community! Details on this project are on the BIA’s website under News. SOCKS will also have cats available at the show! SOCKS is a no-kill shelter in Fort Walton Beach that provides safe and healthy shelter for kittens and cats waiting for adoption. To learn more about SOCKS, please visit www.saveourcatsandkittens.com. You don’t have to be a member of the BIA to become a vendor in our event. Check out our website, www.biaow.org for the official rules and entry form.

New Study Suggests Strong Outlook for Green Homes During the prolonged housing downturn, green homes provided support to the ailing residential market and now promise to be an important element of the recovering market as well, according to a new study conducted by Dodge Data & Analytics, in partnership with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and with the support of Ply Gem Industries, (NYSE: PGEM), a leading manufacturer of exterior building products in North America. Despite the headwinds created by growing concerns about the cost of building green, a high percentage of home builders and remodelers are already building green and expect to do so in the future. While home builders and remodelers report that consumers of all ages are interested in green, the study also finds that consumers age 55 and older are the most important group driving the current green market. The findings also demonstrate that consumers’ association of green with healthier homes leads to even higher potential for growth in the future, as do increased use of renewable technologies by 2018. To download the new study, “Green and Healthier Homes: Engaging Consumers of All Ages in Sustainable Living SmartMarket Report,” visit http://analyticsstore.construction.com/smartmarketreports/2015GreenHomesSMR.html. The 2015 study, which surveyed 232 builders and remodelers from across the U.S., demonstrates that they recognize the benefits of green building: Over half (54%) of home builders are currently constructing at least 16% of their new homes green, and 39% of remodelers report that at least 16% of their remodeling projects are green. By 2020, nearly all (81%) home builders will be constructing that level of green, with over half (51%) building at least 60% of their new homes green. By 2020, remodelers report a similar level of growth, with nearly three quarters (74%) making at least 16% of their projects green, and over one third (36%) completing over 60% of their projects green. These expectations of higher green involvement emerge despite growing concerns about the cost of building green. 77% of home builders and remodelers report that building green has an incremental cost over traditional construction of 5% or more, notably higher than the 60% in 2014 and 58% in 2011 who noted that level of increased cost. While higher cost is also the top obstacle to green reported, it does not appear to have dampened the drive toward green in the market.

“Builders and remodelers have long recognized that green is the future of home building,” said NAHB Chairman Tom Woods, a home builder from Blue Springs, MO. “Since we first began partnering on this study with Dodge Data & Analytics in 2006, we’ve seen that commitment grow. The study’s recent findings reinforce this continued growth, with new homeowner feedback showing a desire and expectation that new homes be high-performing, particularly when it comes to energy conservation. Most builders recognize that they need to be at least conversant in green to stay competitive.”  One key factor driving the growth of green is the association of green homes with healthier living. Home builders and remodelers certainly recognize the potential: most (83%) believe that consumers will pay more for homes that are healthier. “We have seen the commercial sector of the construction industry focus on the impact of buildings on the health of their occupants in the last few years, but these findings suggest that attention to healthier homes may offer an even higher gain for green in the residential market,” said Steve Jones, Senior Director of Industry Insights at Dodge Data & Analytics, “especially as consumers become better informed about the features that make homes more sustainable and healthier, and begin to demand them.” Another factor leading to growth in the residential market is the increasing use of renewable energy. The study demonstrates that the use of renewable technologies is expected to grow across the board, revealing an interest in energy performance that goes beyond green. By 2018, nearly half of home builders and remodelers expect to be using solar photovoltaic (48%) and ground source heat pump (52%) technologies. Net zero homes are also emerging as an important trend, with nearly one quarter (21%) of home builders having built a net zero home in the last two years. One interesting finding of the new study is that the greatest impetus for green homes comes, not from millennials as many people might expect, but from consumers age 55 and older. Data from the study suggest that greater familiarity with home features leads to an emphasis on home performance. Therefore, as the environmentallyminded millennials gain more experience with homeownership, it is quite possible that there could be even greater demand for green in the future.  To download the new study, “Green and Healthier Homes: Engaging Consumers of All Ages in Sustainable Living” SmartMarket Report, visit http://analyticsstore.construction.com/smartmarketreports/2015GreenHomesSMR.html. www.biaow.org

Recognition 2015 Builder and Associate of the Year The 2015 Builder of the Year, Chris Taylor of CM Taylor Contracting, is a person who has truly given his time and talents for the betterment of the building industry and the BIA. He was engaged on a state and local level in 2015. Chris has been a Board Member at the BIA since 2011 and joined the Executive Committee of our Board of Directors in 2012. Chris is always there to lend a hand with community efforts as well. In 2015, he joined other BIA members to build a fence at the Emerald Coast Science Center. The 2015 Associate of the Year, Kelle Olsen of Okaloosa Gas, has worked quietly behind the scenes of the BIA for many years. From chairing the most successful Home Show in years in 2015, to delivering signs and driving our Parade of Homes judges, Kelle is always there to help. Congratulations to Chris and Kelle!

2015 APEX Awards

On December 3rd, the Building Industry Association of Okaloosa-Walton Counties presented the prestigious APEX Awards. Since 1999, the APEX Awards have annually recognized the “Achievement of Professional Excellence” by its members in a number of categories which include many of the crafts, trades and professions involved in the homebuilding and remodeling industries, as well as citing companies and individuals who support and enhance the industry. Judging for categories in the APEX Awards is done by an independent panel of judges from outside the local area who have a wide range of expertise in many aspects of the industry. The judges do not score the entries in competition with one another, but instead rate them against a standard of “Excellence”. Consequently, there may be more than one award presented in the same category or the judges may elect to present no awards at all in a category.

We are very appreciative of the award, which means we can now afford to conduct activities for the youth we serve. Gulf Power started the Power of Service awards in 2012 as a way to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service. Since its inception, 34 organizations in Northwest Florida have been recognized and awarded more than $85,000 in grants from Gulf Power.

Money is raised for this scholarship fund from our Mike Josey Memorial Sporting Clay Tournament. This is a great event held at the Shoal River Sporting Clays and Shooting Center in Crestview each October.

Business Breakers Publix Super Markets Charities Donation December Dedication, Fort Walton Beach

Publix donated $60,000.00 for a new Habitat Home in Crestview to be built in 2016, part of a $4M donation to Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the Southeast.

Publix Managers: Bernie Schultz, Patrick Lascell, Tomell Johnson, Ron Littleford, Joe Kerns, (Nitsi Bennett, Habitat Okaloosa CEO/President) Tim Bryant, Chad Sutherland, Natalie Diel, Thomas Peters and Mark Seifert.

Harbor Docks & Habitat Lee Automotive Group sponsored this home and many dedicated church, civic and military groups, and committed businesses have donated time, lunches for volunteers, and additional funds for Cheryl Freeman’s home. She has sole custody of her two grandsons, ages 11 & 13. She is looking forward to the stability of a safe, decent affordable home after having to move them 13 times in the last 11 years due to the unsafe conditions that she was forced into because of her low income. Thanks to our sponsors, volunteers, and donors, they will now have a forever home from which to grow and prosper without worrying about having to move ever again.

Thanksgiving at Harbor Docks, the 21st year was an amazing success! With beautiful weather, about 130 Habitat volunteers served 2012 guests for a free traditional Thanksgiving Day meal, and over $24,000.00 in donations was accepted on behalf of Habitat for Humanity in Okaloosa County and Destin Harvest.

Mike Moras, President of Designer Outdoor Kitchen by Designer Kitchen & Baths Inc., has signed a 5-year agreement with Trex, the world’s largest composite decking company, to design and provide outdoor storage cabinetry under the name ‘Trex Outdoor Storage’. Mike said, “This is an amazing honor to be selected over all other outdoor cabinetry companies in the country.” Mike will be introducing new products to the existing ‘Trex Outdoor Storage’ line at the 2016 International Builders Show in Las Vegas at the Trex Booth in January. Mike created the outdoor cabinetry line Naturekast over 7 years ago which has grown to include over 350 dealers nationwide. The production demands of Trex and Naturekast have outgrown the company’s facility in Freeport, so the manufacturing and sales of the cabinets are now handled off-site. The focus of Mike’s local company remains on the market area between Pensacola and Panama City. Mike says, “This is the most fun I have had in my 30 years of designing and building cabinetry. I am thrilled to be able to direct all my efforts into creating outdoor living areas for our local market.”

#1 Prepare a Budget

A budget bud helps control spending decisions, by making you essmate what you think you’ll make and what you’ll probably spend. Your budget doesn’t have to be complicated or business school perfect; use financial and market trends from the last year to project what you think your small business will earn and what its expenses will be in 2016. But be ready to go “off script” if you generate more or less revenue than anncipated.

#2 Complete a 2015 Review

R eview last year’s goals. Of the things you set out to do, what did you accomplish? If you didn’t get everything done, explore why; maybe beeer oppons came along, maybe a market change prevented 100% success, or maybe you realized halfway through the year that there were other, more produccve things to focus on. Take a few minutes to reflect on all you did accomplish, then move the items lee undone to 2016’s goals or delete them ennrely.

#3 Build a Schedule S

The Voice | January 2016

The start of a new year is a great me to declare how you’ll spend your me. Construct a schedule that includes an hour or more weekly for planning. Whatever you think your business needs but didn’t get in 2015, create space for it in 2016.

#4 Be Prepared for Almost Anything

Be sure su you have a plan for anncipaang and paying taxes, and make sure you have small business insurance coverage for those unforeseen accidents and issues. Professional liability coverage will protect your business from if you are sued for negligence, while General liability insurance protects your business from third party claims for bodily injury, associated medical cost, and damage to someone else’s property. Because you can never acquire insurance coverage aaer you need it, it’s a smart m move to protect your business now.
