Welcome!

A New Year to Prosper Alan Baggett, Executive Vice President

Building Industry Association of Okaloosa and Walton Counties

Good bye 2016, you were like a fine wine, you tasted really great, but you were gone before we knew it. Well I say, let’s open a new bottle and call it “Getting the most out of my BIA membership”. Let’s start with our Builder and Remodeler members and what can make you enough money to pay for your membership each year. The Member Rebate Program is a FREE member benefit available to all active Builder and Remodeler members. With 50+ industry leading manufacturers in the program, members are rewarded for their loyalty, the same as a “Top 5” Builder. The average rebate per Builder and Remodeler member who participated in 2016 was $1,178.12! In fact, over 70% of participants received more than their annual dues to their association last year! Don’t leave any money on the table. It Takes Only 3 Easy Steps to Participate: 1. Register – This provides us information on where to send your rebate check 2. Submit a Rebate Claim 3. Receive a Rebate Check. After a brief verification process by the manufacturers, lump-sum rebate checks are sent. Visit www.HBArebates.com to Register & Claim. Use the Member Rebate Program to increase your profits in this year’s 38th Annual Parade of Homes scheduled for June 10-18th.

Your BIA and our community partners bring some of the finest speakers to the area and January starts the year off with one of our best events of the year, the Economic and Housing Forecast Breakfast scheduled for January 18th. Make plans to also join us in Tallahassee on March 27-29th, as we visit our elected officials and discuss ongoing challenges to our industry. Along with our newly elect FHBA President, Jeremy Stewart, and FHBA Governmental Affairs Chairman, Felix Beukenkamp, we are going to make sure the issues that affect the Panhandle are addressed. On the national front, the NAHB International Builders Show (IBS) returns to Orlando and is scheduled for January 10-12th. If you’re in the industry and don’t attend IBS, now that it is back in Florida, you put yourself at a competitive disadvantage to those that attend. New products, techniques and ideas, are the substance if being a market leader. Visit www.buildersshow.com for all the info. Let’s talk marketing for a minute. Did you know that the staff of the BIA, all two of us, have 25+ years of experience in marketing, Jennifer Fleming alone just marked her 10 year anniversary with the BIA. There are many ways for you and your company to get involved from committees, sponsorships, education, home show, parade of homes and many more. Our challenge to you is to call us and make an appointment to sit down and discuss the best ways you and your company can fully utilize your membership with us. We’ll make sure the coffee is hot and candy is on the table. I hope I have peaked your interest in making the most of your membership with the BIA. Your staff of the BIA, your state, and national partners stand ready to serve and wish you all a “Happy and Prosperous New Year”

Meet the 2017 BIA President Terry Hymel, Bluewater Central Vacuum Systems How long have you been in the area?

I was born and raised in New Orleans and moved to the Destin area in September 2006.

Tell us about your family life.

I am single and I have one son and two grandchildren that are eight and two-years old.

What was your first job?

My first earnings came from mowing lawns when I was 12 years old. My first real job was in a “full service” gas station when I was 15 years old.

It sounds like you were entrepreneurial from the start! How has BIA membership benefited you and your business, Bluewater Central Vacuum Systems?

“A great opportunity for exposure exists through various levels of sponsorships for the many events held throughout the year including, one of the largest for our Associate Members, the upcoming Home Show February 25th - 26th.”

Upon joining the BIA, I became very active and involved by participating on and later chairing a number of event committees. This participation offered me the opportunity to meet and develop many profitable business relationships in a nontraditional sales environment. Throughout my ten-year membership with the BIA, I have also formed a number of personal friendships.

Historically, Builder Members have presided as President of the BIA. As the first Associate Member President, do you foresee any special challenges?

No, I do not. As I see it, the president’s job is to preside over the gatherings of the hundreds of unique individuals that are the heart and soul of the BIA. It is the collective effort of these individuals that drive the BIA and the president’s job is to help keep them moving in a forward direction.

How would you describe the state of the building industry in our local area?

This area has been enjoying robust building for a number of years now and the consensus seems to be that it will be continuing at a similar pace for the next few years.

With the strengthening of the area’s building industry, how will the BIA continue to support and partner with its’ Builder Members?

As the voice of the building industry in Okaloosa and Walton Counties, the BIA will maintain an active role in representing our Builder Members in governmental affairs at the local, state and national levels. The BIA also offers continuing education opportunities and seminars for Builder Members in order to stay current on industry issues, regulations and legislation. We are also gearing up for the 38th Annual Parade of Homes, June 10th-18th, which will be a fantastic showcase of new construction highlighting our Builder Members.

You mentioned that being a BIA Member allowed you to foster successful business relationships with other Members. What other opportunities might there be for Associate Members? Being able to connect with hundreds of Member businesses in the industry is an enormous benefit! As an Associate Member one will find that doors are opened, referrals are made and a network is created. All Associate and Builder Members are featured on the BIA website, BIAOW.org, and in The VOICE magazine throughout the year. A great opportunity for exposure exists through various levels of sponsorships for the many events held throughout the year including, one of the largest for our Associate Members, the upcoming Home Show February 25th-26th.

What are your goals for 2017 as the President of the BIA?

I look forward to assisting our members in any and every way that the BIA can, while continuing to grow the organization with the addition of new members.

Not that you will be having a lot of free time on your hands in 2017 with your new role as President and running your business, but what are your hobbies and what do you look forward to doing when you might find some spare time? I enjoy motorcycle riding, scuba diving, playing golf, kayak fishing and my version of gambling - trading options in the financial markets. 6

Outlook

Builder Confidence Closes Year on a High Note December 15, 2016 Builder confidence in the market for newly-built single-family homes jumped seven points to a level of 70 on the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). This is the highest reading since July 2005. “This notable rise in builder sentiment is largely attributable to a postelection bounce, as builders are hopeful that President-elect Trump will follow through on his pledge to cut burdensome regulations that are harming small businesses and housing affordability,” said NAHB Chairman Ed Brady, a home builder and developer from Bloomington, Ill.  “This is particularly important, given that a recent NAHB study shows that regulatory costs for home building have increased 29 percent in the past five years.”   “Though this significant increase in builder confidence could be considered an outlier, the fact remains that the economic fundamentals continue to look good for housing,” said NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz. “The rise in the HMI is consistent with recent gains for the stock market and consumer confidence. At the same time, builders remain sensitive to rising mortgage rates and continue to deal with shortages of lots and labor.” Derived from a monthly survey that NAHB has been conducting for 30 years, the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index gauges builder perceptions of current single-family home sales and sales expectations

for the next six months as "good," "fair" or "poor." The survey also asks builders to rate traffic of prospective buyers as "high to very high," "average" or "low to very low." Scores for each component are then used to calculate a seasonally adjusted index where any number over 50 indicates that more builders view conditions as good than poor. All three HMI components posted healthy gains in December. The component gauging current sales conditions increased seven points to 76 while the index charting sales expectations in the next six months jumped nine points to 78.  Meanwhile, the component measuring buyer traffic rose six points to 53, marking the first time this gauge has topped 50 since October 2005. Looking at the three-month moving averages for regional HMI scores, the Northeast rose six points to 51, the Midwest posted a three-point gain to 61, the South rose one point to 67 and the West registered a two-point gain to 79. Editor's Note: The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index is strictly the product of NAHB Economics, and is not seen or influenced by any outside party prior to being released to the public. HMI tables can be found at nahb.org/hmi. More information on housing statistics is also available at housingeconomics.com.

38th Annual

The 38th annual BIA Home Show will be held at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on Okaloosa Island on Saturday, February 25th from 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday, February 26th from 11am - 4 pm. The Home Show features indoor exhibit booths filled with information on products and services for those who plan to build new homes or wish to remodel or even just “spruce up” their current homes. This year’s show will also feature many new “Green” Products and Services available now to our local area! Spend the whole day at our show with your family! Informational seminars and tons of booths to view are just some of the things you can do at the 2017 Home Show. Our popular informational seminars include seminars on lawn care, remodeling ideas, and more. Our informational seminars are a great way to learn about products and services offered by our local builders and associates. Advance tickets for the event can be purchased for $2.00 at any Eglin Federal Credit Union branch locations beginning in February. You can also buy your tickets at the door for $5.00. Children 12 and under are

admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Those attendees with military IDs receive $1.00 off of your ticket price at the door. This year we have partnered with the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors (ECAR) for our Home Show to offer a larger variety of vendors and seminars for all of your home buying and remodeling needs. We are also partnering with SOCKS (Save Our Cats and Kittens) this year to present the Inaugural Kits for Cats project. We are looking for companies to build custom made Cat Trees / Furniture. These will be displayed at the Home Show and will be voted on by our attendees. This is a great opportunity to help SOCKS and get some great exposure with the community! Details on this project are on the BIA’s website under News. SOCKS will also have cats available at the show! SOCKS is a no-kill shelter in Fort Walton Beach that provides safe and healthy shelter for kittens and cats waiting for adoption. To learn more about SOCKS, please visit www.saveourcatsandkittens.com.

Register today and be a part of the 2017 Home Show! You don’t have to be a member of the BIA to become a vendor in our event. Check out our website, www.biaow.org for the official rules and entry form.

While in high school Adam owned and operated his own landscaping business. In his senior year of high school Adam worked for Airtime Aircraft where he assembled Adam Davis amphibious ultralights. He is currently enrolled at the University of Florida where he is studying for a Biomechanical Engineering Degree. Congratulations to Adam!

2016 William R. (Mac) McClarrie Scholarship Winner Evan Rice is a Choctawhatchee High School Indian and currently has a 3.13 GPA and has declared his major as Civil Engineering. Sherriff Ashley says “His parents are hardworking, kind, gracious and giving and you plainly see Evan Rice that they have instilled the same traits into their two sons”. He helped organize and served as the President in our area’s first high school “Bass Fishing Club”. He has, with the help of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, received permission to organize a massive community service project that will set up collection containers at public boat ramps to collect non-biodegradable and environmentally hazardous fishing line. This young man’s cousin is William R. “Mac” McClarrie, the son of who this scholarship is named. Congratulations to Evan!

Opportunity Place ECAR’s Commuity and Military Outreach Committee members brought dinner to some wonderful people at Opportunity Place! Thanks to Olive Garden in Destin and Fort Walton Beach & Little Caesars in Destin for their contributions. Opportunity Place operates under the umbrella of Okaloosa Walton Homeless Continuum of Care/Opportunity Inc. and are dedicated to help women and families, who are homeless, become self-sufficient.

Groundbreaking United States Air Force Captain Nathan Nelson and his family celebrating the groundbreaking of their new home provided to them by Building Homes for Heroes on December 13, 2016. ECAR's Community and Military Outreach Committee has organized multiple benefits for Mr. Nelson's family over the past two years and were elated to attend this very special ceremony. ECAR would like to thank Building Homes for Heroes for all the amazing work they do and everyone that attended the charity volleyball games. Our Association will continue to work with BHFH in their efforts to provide mortgage and debt-free specialized homes for these members. Captain Nelson suffered a spinal cord injury from a rocket blast in Afghanistan. He has no movement below his chest and limited use of his hands. Captain Nelson was part of a special operations team that took heavy fire in September of 2013 during his third tour in Afghanistan.

Healing Paws for Warriors

Months of fundraising and a culmination of countless generous ECAR members donating to Healing Paws for Warriors came together in December. The Emerald Coast Association of Realtors was able to completely fund two rescue-to-trained ADA certified service dogs for veterans in our community! Healing Paws for Warriors is a local (Fort Walton Beach) registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing post 9/11 combat veterans wounded from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Military Sexual Trauma (MST) rescue-to-trained ADA certified service dogs.

Business Breakers The exclusive listing agency for South Walton’s new “coastal village” RidgeWalk

A Harbor Docks & Habitat Thanksgiving

ResortQuest® Real Estate hosted breakfast on November 16 and 17 to celebrate the kickoff of RidgeWalk – a new French-inspired coastal village. Nearly 140 real estate agents attended the two-day event to familiarize themselves with this new-build option for buyers in South Walton. Currently under construction, RidgeWalk will consist of 74 home sites within walking distance from South Walton’s beautiful beaches and Gulf Place. Randy Wise Homes is the select builder in RidgeWalk. A brick-paved entrance with a timeless iron and wood gate will welcome residents to a village nestled within seven acres of protected habitat, navigated by meandering sidewalks and a heavy timber bridge. Over 100 flickering gas lanterns will illuminate the tree-lined streets and common areas, and residents will enjoy access to a clubhouse and pool. “We invite agents and buyers alike to experience the resort destination that we’re calling ‘the Best New Address on 30A’,” said Carmela Bell, Broker, ResortQuest Real Estate. “RidgeWalk's premium location, amenities, and overall experience make this a unique buying opportunity, and we welcome everyone to see what we mean when we say ‘Live outside the ordinary’." The initial groundbreaking of RidgeWalk has already occurred, and an on-site sales office will be set up in early 2017.

Opening Ceremonies - Keynote Speaker Peyton Manning Kick off IBS 2017 by attending the Opening Ceremonies! Tuesday January 10th, don’t miss legendary quarterback Peyton Manning as the Keynote Speaker at this year’s IBS Opening Ceremonies. Fresh off of his amazing victory in Super Bowl 50, Manning will share his thoughts about his career and what it takes to be a leader. A native of New Orleans, he was named the No. 1 greatest athlete to hail from the state of Louisiana by The Times-Picayune and named a first-team All-Pro selection by the Associated Press on seven occasions. He is the NFL’s only five-time Most Valuable Player and a 14-time Pro Bowl selection, earning his place among the greatest quarterbacks in league history as the active leader in nearly every statistical passing category. In 2013, Manning was named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated. In his first year with the Broncos

in 2012 - and after missing the entire 2011 campaign with a neck injury - Manning finished as the Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year and runner-up for the league’s MVP. For his actions off the field, Manning was honored as the recipient of the Byron “Whizzer” White Humanitarian Award and the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2005 as well as the Bart Starr Award in 2015. Manning serves as a member of the American Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet and The Pat Summit Foundation Advisory Board, and maintains a strong relationship with St. Vincent’s Children’s Hospital (Indianapolis), which in 2007 was renamed the “Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent.” He and his wife, Ashley, established the PeyBack Foundation in 1999 to promote the future success of disadvantaged youth by assisting programs that provide leadership and growth opportunities for children at risk, providing more than $10 million of impact to at-risk youth through its grants and programs since its inception.
