MEET THE 2018 BIA PRESIDENT ANDY WILSON, WILSON ENTERPRISES

OF NWFL, INC.

How long have you been in the area?

I have lived in the area for 34 years. I was born in Biloxi, MS at Keesler AFB. We moved to Crestview, FL when I was one. My dad was stationed at Duke Field AFB so I was able to grow up in the area. I love the Emerald Coast and wanted to stay here following high school and OkaloosaWalton Community College. There is no other place I would want to call home!

What created your interest and passion for building and how did the interest evolve to where you are today?

“I will continue to work on Government Affairs issues in both Walton and Okaloosa Counties.” “I also want the BIA to have a larger social media presence through such things as growing Facebook marketing...”

My first construction job was as a plumber. I was a plumber for over four-years. I really enjoyed plumbing and working on the new construction homes. I decided I wanted to build a house at the age of 21. I enlisted a builder we had done plumbing for and who was kind of a "hands-on type of guy." I helped him every chance I could. He was the first person to encourage me to gain the experience and knowledge to become a builder. Then came some hard work after that decision, and the rest is history.

Tell us about your family life.

I met my wife, Yvonne, eight years ago and we have been married for two years. I have one son, Johnathan, who is 16 and attends Niceville High School. Yvonne, Johnathan and I live in Niceville. As a family we love and enjoy everything the gulf coast has to offer, from our pretty beaches to the many great local restaurants like Toast. We spend time with Yvonne's twin sister Christine and my brother- in-law Jared and really enjoy our time with our nephew and niece. My grandparents and parents both live in Crestview so weekly family dinners are fairly regular. My son Johnathan shares the same passion for skateboarding that I had growing up and also a (recent) similar passion for VW cars. These common interests make for special father-son times.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In spare time I like boating, sporting clays, enjoying the beach, spending time with my family and friends, and two dogs Sadie (Scottish Terrier) and Zeb (West Highland Terrier).

How has BIA membership benefited you and your business?

I initially joined the BIA to put an entry in the Parade of Homes. The Parade of Homes has given me more exposure than any other marketing that I have done for my company. Another way I have benefitted by being an active BIA member are the relationships that I have built with other Builder and Associate members. If a challenge arises in new construction, I now have direct contacts at various companies to assist me in solving my challenge.

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing the BIA of Okaloosa-Walton Counties?

The biggest challenge for the BIA is solving the ongoing government affairs issues we deal with at both a local and state level.

What is the state of the building industry in our local area?

The building industry in our area has been in an upswing for a while now and the BIA is benefitting from monthly new member growth and an increase in active members.

What are your goals for 2018 as the President of the BIA?

I have a list of goals for 2018. I want to continue to grow our membership and look for new opportunities to have monthly meetings or events. I will continue to work on Government Affairs issues in both Walton and Okaloosa Counties. I also want the BIA to have a larger social media presence through such things as growing Facebook marketing with Builder/Associate Business videos or live Facebook posts. Another goal includes the completion of a successful showcase home that I am building in Crestview. 4

THE BIA CARING, CREATING, & CONTRIBUTING Let me say "Thank You" for the opportunity to be your Executive Vice President and how very thrilled I am to lead your association. As your Executive Vice President, it is my job to work with you, the leaders of this Association, and carry out the policies made by the Board of Directors. With that said, let me say that it has been a pleasure to have worked with our 2017 BIA President Terry Hymel (Bluewater Central Vacuum Systems). Terry was the first Associate President of the BIA in our 55-year history and was always there when we needed to get a job done. "Thank You Terry".

do business with our local government officials. Events like the Nail Drivers Golf Tournament and Mike Josey Memorial Sporting Clay Tournament that help provide the funds needed to award scholarships to the sons and daughters of BIA members.

I am also excited about the year ahead and I am looking forward to working with our new President Andy Wilson (Wilson Enterprises of Northwest Florida, Inc.). Andy is both energetic and positive about his role as President and I know he will provide the leadership necessary to get the job done very effectively. I welcome our new board members and officers, and I challenge them to work diligently with Andy in the pursuit of greater things for the BIA. I challenge each of you to follow Andy’s lead and devote your time and talents to the BIA whenever possible.

This is your Association and I hope this year you take advantage of the opportunities you have as a result of your investment. As a member of the BIA, you receive a wealth of benefits that not only protect our industry, but also provide you with money saving discounts, education, instant access to legal documents and so much more. The BIA is a great organization, filled with talented people with great ideas and many opportunities to realize the value of your membership. My hope for 2018 is that you take advantage of your membership with the BIA and get "INVOLVED".

Last year your BIA and its members were involved in many aspects of the industry. We had members like Jeremy Stewart, who not only was the President of the Florida Home Builders Association, but spent many hours/days in Tallahassee fighting on your behalf and the issues that affect our industry. Felix Beukenkamp and Skip Miller lead the BIA Governmental Affairs Committee to make positive changes to the way you

If you would like to get more involved or learn more about your membership, please contact myself or Jennifer Fleming and we would be happy to help.

You know the quote "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child" In 1962 a group of people involved in every aspect of the building industry, who were concerned about improving the area in which they do business and were willing to do something about it, created the Building Industry Association. Their goal and our goal today, is to create a climate where builders can prosper which also provides a climate in which to prosper for all those related industry trade partners.

RAIN BARRELS ON PARADE The Inaugural Rain Barrels on Parade was a huge success. Art Department students from 20 schools in both Okaloosa and Walton Counties, painted 32 rain barrels that were featured at homes in the 2017 Parade of Homes. Thanks to BIA members, Northwest Florida Daily News and Waterstone Mortgage Corporation, for their support of this new endeavor. As a result of the online auction of the rain barrels, the BIA was able to donate half of the proceeds from the sale of the rain Barrels back to each of the school’s art departments and created three scholarships for students going to college for a career in Construction. Let us know if you and your business want to be part of this year’s Rain Barrels on Parade Brigade. For more information, please contact Jennifer Fleming at 850-863-5107 or jgf@biaow.org

39 TH ANNUAL

AN EVENT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

The 39 th annual BIA Home Show will be held at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on Okaloosa Island Saturday, February 24th 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday, February 25th 11 am - 4 pm.

This year we have partnered with the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors (ECAR) for our Home Show to offer a larger variety of vendors and seminars for all of your home buying and remodeling needs.

The Home Show features indoor exhibit booths filled with information on products and services for those who plan to build new homes, wish to remodel or even just “spruce up” their current homes. This year’s show will also feature many new “Green” Products and Services now available to our local area!

We are also partnering with SOCKS (Save Our Cats and Kittens) this year to present the Inaugural Kits for Cats project. We are looking for companies to build custom made Cat Trees/ Furniture. These will be displayed at the Home Show and will be voted on by our attendees. This is a great opportunity to help SOCKS and get some great exposure within the community! Details on this project are on the BIA’s website under News. SOCKS will also have cats available at the show!

Spend the whole day at our show with your family! Informational seminars and tons of booths to view are just some of the things you can do at the 2018 Home Show. Our popular informational seminars include seminars on lawn care, remodeling ideas, and more. These seminars are a great way to learn about products and services offered by our local builders and associates. Advance tickets for the event can be purchased for $2 at any Eglin Federal Credit Union branch locations beginning in February. You can also buy your tickets at the door for $5. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Those attendees with military IDs receive $1 off the ticket price at the door.

SOCKS is a no-kill shelter in Fort Walton Beach that provides safe and healthy shelter for kittens and cats waiting for adoption. To learn more about SOCKS, please visit www.saveourcatsandkittens. com. You don’t have to be a member of the BIA to become a vendor in our event. Check out our website, www.biaow.org for the official rules and entry form.

This year we have partnered with Okaloosa $aves to make this event bigger and better! Okaloosa $aves will be at the BIA Home Show on Saturday, February 24th to display their Piggy Bank contest entries for public judging and conduct several financial seminars. In addition, Okaloosa $aves will be signing up Savers for prizes and to receive copies of the America Saves newsletters and other offers from Okaloosa $aves throughout the year. Be sure to stop by the Okaloosa $aves table to vote for your favorite piggy bank. Youth bank entry winners will be announced on February 24th and will receive cash awards. Okaloosa $aves is a coalition of volunteers in Okaloosa County under the national America Saves program in conjunction with the University of Florida/IFAS Extension, with a mission to encourage individuals to build wealth and reduce debt. Okaloosa $aves provides free financial information, educational programs, and many other events. www.biaow.org
