HUMAN HERMITS GROUP ABSTRACT ABSTRACT
We’reall all about WhatWHAT we’re about
“If people are not motivated to do something, they won’t do it. If there is no reward after their action they will not continue. Whether the reward is mental or physical, there is always a reward with an action. A sense of satisfaction. A sense of accomplishment. With the movement within Melbourne’s CBD increasing more and more every year, a push for ease of biking transport is a must. What better way to move yourself from place to place then cycling. The benefits are uncountable. There is a need to establish why people don’t ride to work more. But, does this come down to people feeling unsafe, facilities, equiptment, storage, or just laziness? All these areas need to be addressed and acted upon to create the free movement of more efficient cycling in and around the city”.
The Human Hermits project is a design initiative aimed at gaining insight into the lives of commuter cyclists regarding their routes, their interests, and their thoughts on the cycling community of Melbourne. Upon initial research into commuter cycling, it was clear the Melbourne was lacking the infrastructure to help the cycling community grow socially. The lack of a social community directed at commuters specifically meant that getting from A to B for many Melburnians is a solitary commute. In Melbourne, cyclists account for 75% of transport injuries, (Better Health Victoria, 2010). Many of these injuries are due to poor infrastructure and a large number due to the lack of isolated bike lanes. Cycling in numbers is a great way to increase cycling safety for those travelling long distances but without a way to connect with cyclists in the same area, many are forced to tough it out on their own. The Human Hermits set about gathering information directly form cyclists through small events and interviews at several locations. Human behavior was also studied to see whether or not a large percentage of people had the time to stop during their commute to and from where they were going to meet people of similar background, sharing stories, bike tips, and other interesting information. The progression throughout the semester has shaped the project and aspects from almost all previous assignments can be seen.

QR Codes With smart phone being a thing of the ‘now’, everything is at one’s fingertips. With the touched of a button and the slide of hand, one is able to browse the internet, gathering information of the fly. With the implementation of QR codes into the commuter lifestyle, one is able to simply take a photo with their smartphone (eg. iPhone) and be immediately directed to the website linked to it. The QR code above is a direct link to the Human Hermits homepage.
