How Your Donations Help Oxfam Trailwalker is one of the largest fundraising sports events in Hong Kong. Since 1986, more than 73,000 participants have raised over HK$365 million to support Oxfam's various poverty alleviation and emergency relief programmes in Mainland China, South Asia, the Mekong, Africa and more, including Hong Kong. However, there are still around one billion people living in poverty, and they really need your support. Please use your Team Page on www.oxfamtrailwalker.org.hk or the Sponsorship Folder to ask for sponsorship. Remember: the more you raise, the more people you can help.
Better farming, better income (Zambia) Out of Zambia’s population of 13.5 million, about 8.7 million face extreme poverty, living on less than HK$10 a day. Most rural residents face chronic food shortages, even though they themselves are farmers. In 2007, Oxfam started a community development initiative with Hodi, a local partner organisation. Over the years, they have provided training in farming skills and small-scale business principles to a women’s group. Equipped with new farming techniques, knowledge about crop diversification, a motorised pump and other new agricultural tools, the 80 villagers in the group now have better income – and a better life.
Say ‘no’ to erosion (China) Farming is tough for the people of Mawo, a Miao community in Guizhou Province, China. Many of them do not have water supply at home; their land is rocky, severely eroded and unable to yield healthy crops. In 2011, Oxfam and a local partner in Guizhou began an environmental and sustainable livelihood programme in Mawo Village. The initiative includes supporting the building of water storage tanks – four large ones for community use, and a smaller one for each family – and providing seedlings, tools and agricultural training to increase the quality and quantity of the crops.
