Preparation Oxfam Trailwalker is not an easy event. The last 6km route towards the Finish Point will be more challenging, so participants must have a reasonable level of fitness, good planning and adequate training in order to be able to complete the 100km trail. Attending a first aid course together with your teammates is recommended, and good communication between members is essential to avoid any dispute due to differences in expectations.
The Team Leader Good communication and thorough understanding among team members are essential. The team leader in particular plays an important role in the preparation and coordination work before and after the event, and is required to: 1.
Confirm the team members as soon as possible and affirm that teammates are ready to commit the time and resources required for preparing and attending the event.
2.
Keep teammates informed of the information provided by Oxfam Hong Kong.
3.
Work out a training schedule with teammates and set targets for the team according to the training progress.
4.
Organise a support team and ensure other preparations are in place.
5.
Collect total sponsorship after the event and send it to Oxfam Hong Kong by 18 December 2012.
Training 1.
Make sure you are familiar with the route with practice walks, particularly those sections that you will be walking in the dark. The trail is clearly marked on the countryside maps of Sai Kung and Clear Water Bay, New Territories Central and Northwest New Territories. These maps are available at the following Map Publications Centres: • 23/F, North Point Government Offices, 333 Java Road, North Point, Hong Kong (Tel. 2231 3187) • 382 Nathan Road, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon (Tel. 2780 0981) For locations of checkpoints, please refer to P.19-27 or refer to Oxfam Trailwalker Google Map at the Oxfam Trailwalker website. Always take maps with you and learn how to use them together with a simple compass.
2.
Start practice NOW! Walk at least once a week for a minimum of 4-6 hours (about 15-25 km). Plan a schedule with your teammates and stick to it! However, if the weather conditions become unfavourable (e.g. rain, thunderstorm or high temperatures with high humidity) on the day of practice, you should consider changing the route or even suspending the practice. Since the rules require that team members stay together along the trail, it is advisable to train all members to walk at a similar speed. 32
