LINDA VAN NES IN RE/MAX SOUTHERN AFRICA’S HALL OF FAME

Local RE/MAX estate agents in top 10 RE/MAX released their spectacular 2013 YTD results in May. Included in the latest results are three RE/MAX Helderberg sales associates – Linda van Nes, Elmaré Doran and Maarten Laubscher – who received quarterly achievement awards for their rankings within the top 10 RE/MAX agents in the Western and Northern Cape. “Having three of the top 10 RE/ MAX Individual Sales Associates in the Northern and Western Cape regions on our team is a massive victory for us,” says RE/MAX Helderberg broker/ owner, Lee Siebert, proudly. “There are literally several hundred highly successful RE/ MAX sales associates within these two regions – and the cream on the top is in our Somerset West office in Waterstone Village!” RE/MAX Helderberg was again recognised as the top single office in the Western and Northern Cape in RE/MAX SA’s 2013 results and is in second position nationally. RE/MAX Southern Africa announced last week that Linda Van Nes had attained RE/MAX Hall of Fame for the Southern African region, one of the most prestigious career achievement awards within the international RE/MAX Group. “Carefully listening to my sellers and buyers and making an inventory of my client’s requirements and desires, is elementary in brokering a successful deal,” was her reaction. “Good communication and feedback to my clients is an absolute must too. In that respect, speaking several languages is a big advantage – I am skilled in conversations in Afrikaans, Dutch, English, German and even a smattering of French. Dutch iris – more than just a master painting When the Flemish botanist Clusius travelled through Spain in 1564, he was so fixated by the blue Iris xiphium that he sent bulbs back to Belgium, introducing what is known as the Spanish iris to the country. Fast forward to the end of the 19th century when this Spanish variety had spread to the Netherlands and was crossed with Iris tingitana from north-west Africa… The resulting plant, because of its hybridisation taking place in the Netherlands, was immediately known as the Dutch iris, its flower presenting as larger and broader than its two parent plants. The spectacular iris is a plant that does not easily pass the eye without eliciting a sigh. Even master artists such as Vincent van Gogh have painted these blooms to last an eternity on canvas. Luckily for non-painters, a garden canvas is possible if we plant our irises with care and water them with the regularity they require. One of 260 iris species, the Dutch

iris follows the same form as all other plantsinthisgenus,displayingsixexquisite petals (three central, upright “standards”; three larger outer “falls” that recurve outward). This species, which falls into the iris’ bulbous category, grows up to 80 cm high, a lovely length in a flower bed that allows it to show off its blues, whites and yellows, depending on the type – colours befitting the root of the word “iris”, which stems from the Greek word for rainbow. For natural planting, choose to plant your bulbs at the beginning of May, when autumn temperatures are cooler, as this is not a heat-loving plant at all. This will result in blooms during late September and early October. However, you’re easily able to manipulate this adaptable plant and make it flower in early September if you’dlikespringtomakeitselfvisible in your garden earlier. Place the bulbs in the fridge for six weeks from mid-March until the end of April before planting them, and the flowers

will appear sooner in your garden. Create a separated space in the fridge for these bulbs (one that allows them to be stored without being in contact with food, preferably in their own drawer, as they may have been in contact with certain poisons that you don’t want contaminating your edibles). The advantage of this “fridging” method is that, because Dutch irises love a cooler climate, they’ll flower for longer at this earlier time of year. Have you noticed the affinity for the word “cool” associated with these plants? This is why, when it comes to planting them, make sure it’s in a spot where the soil is cool too – not anywhere close to hot paving or touching a north-facing wall, and definitely not in a position that receives full sun. Keep your spot somewhat shaded – overhanging branches work well because they serve the dual purpose of protecting the plants from frost. As for the soil, ensure it has sufficient compost worked into it, and add more on top of the soil surface so that

you have a cooling mulch. Place bulbs 5 cm below the ground, 7 cm apart from one another, which will allow space for layering with another plant such as the hyacinth, eventually creating a denser display of blooms. In November, when the foliage begins to turn yellow, it’s time to lift the bulbs. Unfortunately, because of South Africa’s hot spring season, the bulbs generally don’t perform as well during repeat seasons, although small bulblets can be pulled off from the mother bulb for replanting the following year. Store these bulbs at room temperature until autumn comes around and it’s time to start the cycle again. However, do not fret if your garden is not cool enough for these beauties – they’re generally available from florists as cut flowers throughout the winter months. Chevrolet Spark LS: the amusing friend HANJO STIER I’d like you to meet a new friend of mine. He’s fun, friendly, kinda new in town, wears a blue coat and thanks to the random collection of letters on his Eastern Cape number plate, I nicknamed him Fayzel. His official name is Spark LS and you can find him in your nearest Chevrolet dealership. The Spark range was apparently updated a few months ago and holds five models. “Campus” is student fodder for R106 100, a regular Spark starts at R113 600, the more luxurious Fayzel Spark LS costs R123 000, an even posher Spark LT requires R136 500 and the panel-van “Pronto” is just R101 500. Pronto is poverty spec, but Campus comes with power steering, air-con, radio preparation, two airbags, central locking and ABS/ EBD brakes. The regular Spark tops that with 60/40 folding rear seats, ISOFIX anchors, odometer, radio, two speakers, remote central locking, alarm, immobiliser and optional alloys. Our LS model uses the extra R9 400 to give you front power windows, height-adjustable multifunction steering wheel, powered and heated exterior mirrors, front fog lights, some exterior colour coding and shiny trim, 14-inch alloy wheels, auto-locking doors and two more speakers. The audio system’s quality is de-

cent and we enjoyed the multiple input options. Next to radio and CD, a Spark (except Campus and Pronto) can reproduce noise from Aux or USB sockets with mp3 and ipod capabilities. The button layout and basic steering controls take some getting used to though. My six foot plus frame had no major problems piloting Fayzel. Occasionally my left knee would touch the dashboard and I would’ve liked the steering wheel to be reach-adjustable as well. Rear space is a little less but the 170 dm² boot easily swallowed the six bags of a big weekly shopping spree. Although weight, altitude and heat will unravel the Spark’s performance, I was impressed by the vocal antics of the 1,206 cc 16-valve petrol four-cylinder. It stems 60 kW (82 hp) or 108 Nm against a kerb weight of 1 355 kg to reach 100km/h in 13,3 seconds (we hit 12.5) and a top speed of 164 km/h. Claimed average fuel consumption is 5,4 F/100 km with 129g CO2/ km and we can confirm that Fayzel was quite economical with the contents of his 35 F tank. Thanks to light weighting of pedals and steering, he was a delight to dart around town with except at crawling speeds – throttle take-up is a bit sharp. High speeds, cross winds and vigorous cornering are not his forte, confirming city car credentials. The rear suspension can get choppy, but follows safe, progressive under-steer beyond the im-

Sparks don’t have traction or stability control; they wouldn’t be used very often. Rushing to the far reaches of the Boland for a meeting, Fayzel put up with quite a bit of abuse in the middle of a nasty cold front. On this trip I grew to love his combination of basic technology, peppy engine and lively handling. There’s something refreshing and amus-

ing about a simple, energetic little car. Other things our new friend aced were a bit of gravel road, Cape Town’s afternoon traffic and tight parking spots. The instruments are slightly weird, the headlights’ high beam is acceptable and the Spark comes with a 5-year/120 000 km warranty and roadside assistance; the 3year/60 000 km service plan is op-

tional. Your final purchasing decision will boil down to many things and I believe the funky and chunky Chevy Spark offers good value with its various models. Lexus IS: 1,6 million kilometres of testing QUICKPIC Before the all-new Lexus IS arrives in South Africa in July, it has already accumulated over 1,6 million kilometres of testing and development – enough kilometres for two return trips to the moon. At the heart of the IS development process was the desire to ensure that all IS models maintained their outstanding dynamic capabilities while increasing overall

space and comfort. Testing of the all-new IS took place on the road, track and laboratory with the IS tested to breaking point in the ice and snow of the northern hemisphere, the heat of the southern hemisphere, along with the gruelling test bed of circuits such as the Nürburgring in Germany and Fuji Speedway in Japan. Key to attaining the “fun to drive” characteristics of the new IS was a new development process that saw driving dynamics priori-

tised over all other functions, explained IS Chief Engineer, Junichi Furuyama. “The conventional approach to development would involve developing each of the individual aspects with ‘fun to drive’ as the outcome, much like a pyramid would be built by first constructing the foundation and then proceeding to build up from there,” he said. “The problem with this approach is that there is no knowing whether it will result in achieving a ‘fun to drive’ experience.

“In contrast, development of the new IS flipped this process on its head. “It called for first establishing the pleasurable driving experience users will sense as the peak of the pyramid, and then developing the individual performance elements to support it,” Mr Furuyama said. The process resulted in the adoption of new body strengthening techniques, including laser screw weld and body bonding (25 metres of which is contained in the new

IS), and a suspension system that delivers a 20% increase in roll rigidity. Volkswagen Group South Africa’ passenger car sales grew by 9,8% in the first five months of 2013 when compared to the same period in 2012. The sales growth is 5% better than the market average of 5,9% for this period. Volkswagen Group South Africa’s reported sales in January to May 2013 were 44 103 units (39 777 in 2012: 10,9%). Volkswagen sold 36 143 units (33 033 in 2012: +9,4%) and Audi delivered 7 960 units (6 744 in 2012: +18%). The sales performance further strengthened Volkswagen Group leadership position in the South African car passenger market in 2013 resulting in a passenger car market share of 23,8% (22,7% in 2012: +1,1%). Polo Vivo, which is manufactured at Volkswagen’s Uitenhage factory, was the best-selling passenger model with 15 135 units. Vivo has been the top-selling passenger car in South Africa for the past three years. It was followed by Polo with 11 987 units. Audi’s market share has grown in the premium segment during January to May 2013. It gained a 1,9% further and now stands at 22,3%. This performance has been supported by the introduction of new models such as A3 Sportback and Q5. “The Volkswagen Passenger and Audi Brands have continued to perform strongly in 2013 and we are confident that we will be able to consolidate our leadership position for the rest of the year,” said Mike Glendinning, Director of Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Group South Africa

After testing the Fiat 500 Abarth I would like to write something fun, happy and exciting about the passionate Italians. For those of you who are not familiar with Abarth (and my guess is there are many) it is Fiat’s hi-performance models. You could, to a certain extent, compare Abarth to AMG of Mercedes and M- of BMW. It’s the sort of car that is sportier and demands the driver’s attention. Currently on sale in South Africa, you can buy three Abarth models, two of which can be found in the 500 shape and one in the Punto. I recently had the privilege of driving the 500 Abarth for a weekend, and boy, did I enjoy it! Visually one would never think that this tiny city car is capable of leaving many sportier (and more expensive cars) behind. For the trained eye, the changes from the standard 500 are
