MercedesBenz B200 BE: joyful concept HANJO STIER

F

or today’s review I’m delighted to tell you that our test subject was one of my least favourite automobiles ever and it managed to swing that opinion almost 180 degrees within a week. The previous Mercedes-Benz B-Class never made sense to me. It was just a larger version of the current A-Class, but not large enough (seven seats) to differentiate itself. A Mercedes exec at the B-Class launch finally explained their cunning new plan to me and it makes wonderful sense now. Next year will see the launch of an exhilarating, dynamic, youthful A-Class which moves away from the MPV concept and into the midst of edgy hatchbacks like 1-Series and Golf. The new B-Class was designed to retain and capture clients who prefer the previous A-Class or B-Class MPV design. Potential buyers of the up-coming A-Class will (apparently) will be able to choose from a sensible diesel to a crazy AMG – and every-

thing in between. The new B-Class offers a selection to cater for everyone from your parents to your lead-footed brother-in-law. Our press demonstrator was the range-topping B200 BlueEfficiency turbo-petrol with some youthful bits slapped onto it. These are, in no particular order of coolness, the “Night Pack”, “Sports Pack” and “Exclusive Pack”, as well as intelligent light system, COMAND Online and a few other goodies. Despite all these, my first drive left me completely cold. Not just because someone had nicked most of the fuel, but due to the car’s weird looks and even the trendy white paint, brown and black leather, two-tone wheels and snazzy lights couldn’t convince me. As for the gearbox, that just did whatever it wanted, stuttering around at 1,200rpm in its stupid ECO mode. Switching ECO mode off simply stopped the automated start/stop system while Sport mode meant driving everywhere at 4,500rpm. Jumping into the car to get to a looming appointment must have been the turning point. The car looked amazing just before sun-

Audi’s accomplished A6 3.0 T FSI FRANS LE ROUX

Q

uattro has been synonymous with Audi for more than 30 years. The system was first introduced back in 1980 when the legendary Audi Quattro was born. It ruled the racetracks and dominated rallies all over the globe. What this clever pioneering system does, is it sends the power through all four wheels usually with a 40/60 split. Forty percent of the engine’s power gets directly transferred to the front while the rest (60%) drives the rear wheels. All this is thanks to the German engineer Jörg Bensinger, who came up with the idea in 1977. The other two German giants (MercedesBenz & BMW) rely mostly on rear-wheel-drive which automatically makes the Audi safer and easier to control in any road condition. I recently had the opportunity to sample the new A6. Audi Paarl’s demo had the superb 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 powerplant. This gem of an engine made its debut in the A6 in 2009. Power, however, increased from 213 k.W/420 N.m to 220 k.W/440 N.m. Combined fuel consumption for my trip was around 10 litres/100 km. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h also improved by 0,5 seconds and now stands at a claimed 5,5 seconds. I found the way the engine responded to throttle input and the way the power was put on the road rather impressive. The smoothness of the 7-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox was brilliant. The A6 is still one of the lightest cars in its class. Audi chose to design and build the car utilising primarily aluminium. Aluminium doors, bonnet and side panels are just a few of the lightweight parts fitted to the car. When you select the Dynamic mode, everything sharpens up and the smooth 7-speed

gearbox holds on to each cog a little longer. As the red-line approaches, it is accompanied by an intoxicating 6-cylinder growl that should put a smile on your face. To further improve the sound, shift the gear-lever to the left and use the steering wheel operated pedals. Each time you downshift, especially when carrying speed the V6 sends a bark through the dual exhausts. On the inside is where Audi have been ticking all the right boxes. They arguably have the best interiors and in the medium executive saloon category, it does not disappoint. From the beautifully constructed centre console to the high quality black leather seats, all is well in the world of luxury/Audi. To list all the toys and gadgets would probably take too long. Two SD-memory card slots neatly positioned beneath the multimedia screen were unfamiliar to me. You can up-load music and DVDs which can also be stored on the car’s own hard drive. So no more driving around with old fashioned CDs or even your iPod. The on-board hard drive renders them obsolete. The front seats are electronic and have various comfort settings including lumbar support. Your rear passengers can also enjoy good legroom and their own air-condition vents. Handling in a quattro is very predictable. The suspension has been tuned to achieve a balance of comfort and sportiness. The result is that characteristic under-steering has been lessened, and at the limit there’s a tendency for the bulky A6 to mild over-steer when turning into a corner. I love the look of the new A6. Only one other car trumps it in this category and that honour goes to the Jaguar XF. The new front-end houses beautifully sculpted headlights and pairing them with LED’s makes for a menacing look. At night the true beauty of the light-design is realized. Combined with Audi’s new singleframe grille the A6 becomes even more desirable. Rivals in the medium-size executive sa-

Audi’s A6 is nothing short of perfect. Combine power with Audi’s proven quattro system and you should enjoy every kilometre. PIC: SIEB SIEBERHAGEN loon category come courtesy of the BMW 5-series, Mercedes Benz E-class and Jaguar’s XF. If we compare power output and prices the A6 looks like a promising choice. The A6 3.0 TFSI retails for R683 000, but has the most torque and best acceleration. The Jaguar XF 3.0 V6 is underpowered (175kW/300Nm) but well priced at R638 000. The Mercedes E350 has enough power (225kW/370Nm) but costs R709 000 while the BMW 535i has the same per-

formance credentials as the A6 (225kW/400Nm) but costs R710 000. If you’re a prospective buyer in this segment do consider the Audi. The Quattro system keeps you out of trouble and is confidence inspiring. The A6 is as planted as Bryan Habana heading down the touchline. KIA Soul 2.0: the weird express HANJO STIER

T

his week’s test car is rather special to me for a number of reasons, chief amongst which is the fact that the first ever official launch I attended was for the then new Soul. It’s not the most amazing car on the planet, yet I adore its individuality and cheeky, boxy shape. In a market dominated by small hatchbacks, executive sedans and big off-roaders, the angular sight of a Soul in traffic always cheers me up. Your neighbours already bought a big white bakkie and cute silver hatchback; why not plant a metallic green carton in between the lot? Better yet, order a tomato red one and get yourself a black-and-white cat. Cars can be so much more than just a means of transport and the Kia Soul is high on my list of fun, funky, affordable ways to express yourself during the tedious commute to a drab office building. Zip through the dark multi-story car park and position this little shoebox amongst the hordes of German and Japanese metal, then wait for the inevitable questions in the cafeteria queue. The general opinion of its looks won’t always be positive, but at least you’ve struck up a random conversation. Quite a few of my acquaintances instantly dismissed the Soul as silly, weird or downright ugly. While everyone’s entitled to their opinion, a select few shuffled forward and inspected the Kia with glistening eyes, roaming fingers, perma-smiles and childlike enthusiasm. Should any of the haters still be around, even they will be astonished by the specification levels and packaging of the little Korean. Especially after a recent update, this car offers rather impressive value for money with prices ranging from R197 000 to R244 900. Two engines (1.6 and 2.0 petrol) and two gearboxes (6-speed manual or automatic) make up the range of four, all sold with a 5-year/100 000

Especially after a recent update, this car offers rather impressive value for money with prices ranging from R197 000 to R244 900. PIC: GALIMOTO km warranty and 4-year/90 000 km service plan. The 2012 updates have brought better technology, more powerful engines and a welcome sixth gear to all gearboxes. Standard equipment includes power steering, power windows and mirrors, ABS/EBD brakes, multiple airbags, adjustable multifunction steering wheel, air-con, rear park assist, remote or keyless central locking, radio/ CD with mp3/USB/ipod and bluetooth, two 12V sockets as well as alarm and immobiliser. The 2.0 models boast extra toys like ESC and VSM stability management, hill-start assist, disc brakes all-around, 18-inch wheels, auto

lights, LED daytime lights, cruise control, keyless ignition, leather trim, privacy glass, rearview camera, subwoofer and amplifier. Our test car was a 2.0 Manual and I would definitely recommend the high-spec model over its cheaper siblings, if just for the extra safety features. Other than these and the added luxuries, you also get extra oomph from the bigger engine with maximum outputs of 122kW (166hp) or 200Nm. Kia claims 0-100 km/h in 9,2 seconds which we undercut by 0,4 seconds; top speed is an alleged 186 km/h. Average CO2 output is claimed at 165 g/km and fuel consumption is

3

supposed to be 7L/100 km; we were closer to 10L/100 km with a mixed driving style. Not that the information was easily accessible – my biggest criticism of this car is its multi-display computer in the speedometer, with only the smallest amount of daylight it was completely and utterly unreadable. Other than that, most things were on their best behaviour. Those snazzy 18-inch wheels and low-profile tyres make for a slightly choppy ride at lower speeds but add to the Soul’s fun factor. Handling is impressive by modern standards, the Soul leans quite a bit and the car’s got enough power reserves to wake the traction control. Driven hard there’s an occasional throttle delay after a red-line shift and driven sensibly the gear ratios are well laid out to cruise quietly or power up an incline in a taller gear with low-rev torque. The motor idles quietly but gets going with a gruff bark – I thought this added even more fun to the funky Soul. All seats are comfortable and offer decent space while headroom is of the extremely generous variety. The small 222L boot can extend to 700L, towing capacity is 450 kg, maximum weight hovers around the same and the fuel tank takes a maximum of 48L. The over-assisted steering is feather-light and offers a turning radius of just 5.27 m. All pedals are equally easy to operate, although I didn’t always find the ideal clutch/throttle combo when pulling away. The headlights are good, so’s the sound system and I soon grew attached to my soulful test car. You may be after a small hatchback or SUV but the Soul is just so different and cool. On top of that, it’s good value for money and fun to drive. If you don’t like its looks, I can accept that. But if you do and never test-drive it during your next car shop, I’ll find you and beat you with a cafeteria tray. - Source: Galimoto Media

Nissan Juke Midnight Cowboy

T

he ever-popular Nissan Juke has received a number of styling upgrades in the form of the new Juke Midnight Edition – a limited-production model designed especially for the South African market. Complementing the existing Juke range, the Midnight Edition now offers even more choice for consumers with a sexy styling package to add further appeal to the already alluring crossover. Starting with the powerful Nissan Juke 1.6 DIG-T Tekna as its base, the new Midnight Edition gains styling upgrades to set it apart from the standard model. The already youthful and daring design is further enhanced by the addi-

tion of sporty black 17-inch alloy wheels, red or black spoilers and door mirrors to compliment the body colour, a front styling plate and tinted anti-smash-and-grab across all windows, enhancing the rear privacy glass already fitted as standard to the Tekna model. The range-topping Tekna, with its 1.6-litre DIG turbo-charged petrol engine, embodies the performance and sporty spirit of the Juke perfectly. Its exciting and sporty drive is personified by its 140 kW and 240 Nm output and, with the Juke’s mind-blowing looks wrapping its energetic personality in an overall enthralling package, this performance-oriented derivative speaks to the young at heart who enjoy adventure, adrenaline-filled fun, a thrilling driving

experience and exhilaration around every corner. The new Juke Midnight Edition plays perfectly into the hands of those who want to be even more daring and different in every way, with turbocharged fun from start to finish. Ensuring ultimate exclusivity and furthering the Juke’s persona of standing out from the crowd, the new Juke Midnight Edition will be available in an extremely limited run of just 100 units. The Midnight Edition retails for R272 500 (or R278 500 with leather). Recently it was announced that Nissan South Africa will enjoy an increase in supply of all Juke models leading up to the Christmas period in order to keep pace with demand. – Quickpic

SOLD AUTO BOLAND

supposed to be 7L/100 km; we were closer to 10L/100 km with a mixed driving style.

T

he ever-popular Nissan Juke has received a number of styling upgrades in the form of the new Juke Midnight Edition – a limited-production model designed especially for the South African market.
