Held at the glittering Sandton Convention Centre last Friday (26th April), the 12th annual Oliver Empowerment Awards saw VWSA handed the coveted Skills Development award – beating other major contenders such as First Rand, KPMG and NetCare. Recognised as the country’s most influential empowerment accolade, the Oliver Empowerment Awards identify and acknowledge empowerment leadership and innovation. The awards celebrate companies and individuals in the public and private sectors which excel in job creation, entrepreneurship and enterprise development. VWSA director of corporate and government affairs, Nonkqubela Maliza, was delighted at the news and said the company would continue to strive towards employee skills development. “VWSA not only focuses on employment equity and management matters pertaining to empowerment, but we have also invested heavily in skills development, training, education and enterprise development,” she said, adding that the company had invested about R450 million in various training and skills development initiatives between 2006 and the end of 2011. “This investment has benefited the company’s employees, employees within the nation-

al vehicle dealer networks as well as members of the broader community. VWSA is honoured to have received this prestigious accolade and will continually strive to improve and further the development of our people.” The judging panel of twelve consisted of distinguished business people, including IBM SA’s head of governmental programmes, Gavin Pieterse, MD of the Centre of Supplier Development, Molebatsi Moagi, and CEO of the Black Business Council, Xolani Qubeka. “Volkswagen scored a 10 by our judges for their excellent efforts, at all levels, from adult literacy to technical skills. VWSA is a company with a well-balanced skills development that accommodates all aspects of business,” said Pieterse. Moagi said the company’s programmes were “in line with the learning programme matrix”. “Skills development spans across the entire Volkswagen Group organisation, from technical to leadership skills addressing skills shortages from ABET to production skills. “They have excellent programmes in line with the learning programme matrix that exceeds the skills development targets and compliance requirements,” he said. VWSA’s submission to the Oliver Awards included that it had set up various learning academies at its Uitenhage plant, as well as “a world class small-business incubator in Uitenhage”. “This incubator supports 16 small businesses and costs R5 million to run per annum,” it said in the submission. It also noted its commitment to youth development with the sponsoring of R20 million for the KwaNobuhle loveLife Y-Centre, which opened last year.

Toyota Auris XR CVT: the honest change

HANJO STIER Many years ago there was a hatchback Toyota called Tazz, a purely South African invention for the five-door Corolla shape. This cheapie offspring could only watch VW’s Golf and other premium hatchbacks drive off into the sunset. Tazz and Citi Golf battled it out for entry-level sales while Toyota South Africa had no answer to Golf, Astra, etc. That was until the RunX came along, another local-is-lekker name for what would’ve passed as a perfectly good Corolla hatchback elsewhere. The RunX had a sense of honest simplicity about it, something most Toyota owners appreciate. It was far from beautiful yet pleasing to the eye, especially with some bigger wheels to fill those great Toyota wheel arches. Its successor was the world-market Auris, another Toyota that wasn’t bad looking or bad to drive. It also gave us a taste of things to come with more curves, better proportions and a rather exciting dashboard and instrument cluster. This year saw the introduction of the second-generation Auris which showcases Toyota’s new design language with daring lines defining a slightly more aggressive shape. Some observers noted Korean influence which, considering what they’re up to nowadays, is a back-handed compliment. Its interior is also a refreshing change from previous attempts with a whiff of retro and 86. The dash rises almost vertically and meets the central tunnel through 1970’s Mercedes air vents and a silver swoop which (big sigh) houses the obligatory 1982 Toyota clock. This top-spec XR’s climate control also relies on old-school LCD displays but its efforts are flawless. A big touch-screen infotainment system takes centre stage and offers features like radio, CD, mp3, Aux, USB, Bluetooth and a reversing camera.

Powering the Auris XR is a 1 598cc 4­cylinder petrol engine (97kW/132hp/160Nm) through either a six­speed manual gearbox or CVT (con­ tinually variable transmission). PHOTO: QUICKPIC Instrumentation is clearly drawn with a good trip computer and chrome-ringed main instruments behind a fat, adjustable, multifunction steering wheel. The wheel’s bottom section has a big silver accent, as does the gear lever surround, both front door handles and two round air vents. Leather covers most other surfaces and is held together across the belly of the dashboard by beautifully contrasting white stitches. These are reflected in the door pockets and whereas Toyota still has their own idea of what leather should look and feel like, the new Auris front seats got heaps of praise. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split to increase luggage capacity and you get the usual sus-

pects like central locking, alloy wheels, power windows and mirrors, multiple airbags, advanced ABS brakes, vehicle stability control, ISOFIX anchors, cup holders, alarm and immobiliser as standard. Powering the Auris XR is a 1,598cc 4-cylinder petrol engine (97kW/132hp/160Nm) through either a six-speed manual gearbox or CVT (continually variable transmission). Most people gasp, freeze or recoil in horror at the mention of those three letters but thankfully we have a CVT owner on our team. Said owner confirmed that this Toyota has a pleasing combination of bubbly engine and excellent response. There isn’t much throttle take-up delay and you’ll only have to endure

the hair-raising constant scream if you need full power. Cruising around town or on the highway is extremely smooth, quite frugal (claimed 6.1L/100km, 143g CO²/km) and very relaxing because the 160Nm of torque really do more than they promise. This box also offers manual gear simulation for situations when you simply need to keep the revs up. Comparative 1,600 automatic hatchbacks range from R198 995 to R291 000 against the XR CVT’s asking price of R265 600, not factoring in specification levels.
