VINEYARD COUNTRY ESTATE: STYLISH LIVING
Show house is elegance personified “Darling, just come and look at this incredible view!” an excited wife beckoned to her husband at the launch of the Vineyard Country Estate’s stylish new show house on the evening of Thursday 4 July. At sunset, the expansive panoramic vistas enjoyed from the estate (located on Escallonia Street in Heldervue) are particularly breathtaking. And with a magnificent and uber-stylish show home now showcasing the extraordinary talents of the Manor Homes team (in charge of construction, interior designs and landscaping at Vineyard Country Estate), investors’ excitement has only been heightened – with good reason. Estate developer Andrea Robertson (from Paladin Development) observes, “This truly is the last remaining estate of this kind in the area offering views and home designs of this calibre, and is precisely why there are now only nine properties left out of the initial 34 available. “The team of architects from the Dennis Moss Partnership have done a remarkable job, which means we’ve been able to offer our clients a great range of fantastic plot–andplan designs, but also the freedom and joy to tweak where they see fit. Those who have chosen to invest here are truly delighted to be part of this unique project,” she says. Kelly Harris, head of sales agrees, “It’s a testimony to the quality of life people envisage for themselves at Vineyard Country Estate that we sold 20 of our 34 plots within a fourweek period in 2012. People realise what they’re getting here is something special. “I feel so proud knowing that this product delivers. Whether it’s the beauty and elegance of the home designs, or the impeccable landscape designs of Otilia Gericke and her team, (also of the Dennis Moss Part-
nerships), or the comfort of knowing you’re part of a friendly and secure gated community, Vineyard Country Estate not only meets, but actually exceeds clients’ expectations.” According to Harris, another draw card is the estate’s inclusivity. “We have residents of all ages who’ll be living here, which is lovely.” And what about the homes themselves? Martina le Roux, representing the Dennis Moss Partnerships, explains their vision: “Our intention was not to replicate traditional Cape homes, but rather to adopt traditional elements derived from regional Cape architecture, such as their proportions, simplicity and so on. Homes would best be described as Cape Vernacular with a decisively modern flair. Focal features such as pergolas, traditional chimneys, low walls and verandas were added to complement the character of homes and create a unique sense of place.” One gets a sense of the forthcoming homes’ potential when walking through the plush interiors of the show house tastefully designed by Leanne Beukman of Manor Homes. There’s a feeling of space and luxury in every room. An inviting plunge pool and well-sheltered barbecue area look particularly enticing for lazy weekend and after work entertaining. Leanne’s design options allow homeowners to choose between five different colour schemes, each named for a different wine cultivar. “These schemes are just guides to help inspire our clients. Homeowners are more than welcome to take elements from one design and merge them with another. We want owners to have a sense of freedom and creativity. They can play around with our design specifications to quite a degree.” Manor Homes also offers its clients a choice between various

standard finishes and upgrades when it comes to fittings, flooring, etc. Leanne has chosen a combination of options as well as some of the “green” products available, such as the option of using of Cocomosaic (winner of the Best Green Product Award at Decorex 2013) cladding and tiles, or certain energy and water-saving devices. “We’ve tried to go green wherever possible.” Leanne is also proud of the fact that Manor Homes is able to use local suppliers based in the Helderberg, some of whom also generously donated materials for the show house, such as Top Carpets, JDW Glass Company and Tiletoria. Overseas perspective on life in the Western Cape Every country has its issues. Yes, we have ours – plenty of them. And we know how to complain about them too. But sometimes we lose focus of what we do have, and how fortunate we are. Over the past month I’ve had the pleasure of hosting a number of high profile overseas clients – from Australia, New Zealand, Romania and Austria. They have travelled independently and all passed through the Western Cape, where they have tasted the usual tourist attractions: Table Mountain, Robben Island, Cape Point, Gansbaai shark cage diving, the Winelands, and so on. They have also visited some of the private game lodges in Sabi Sands and Kruger Park. Without exception they were all totally blown away by the Western Cape. And what touched them wasn’t just the usual tourist attractions. It was the people. It was the natural beauty. It was what most of us take for granted every day. As a property owner in the Western Cape, and specifically the Helderberg Basin, you may have wondered whether the grass is greener on the other side – whether you should consider a move to a place that we perceive as having fewer issues. The reality is that we live in one of the most magnificent areas on the planet. Our geographic location, nestled up against lush mountain slopes and the sparkling ocean, and hugged on the side by worldclass vineyards, is truly special. But don’t forget the people. We know that things take longer in the Western Cape, and it’s a given that service levels in many in-
Property Talk by Steve Caradoc-Davies, principal of Harcourts Platinum stances need to improve. But the people of the Western Cape are friendly – and visitors are totally taken by the warmth of Capetonians. What does that mean for real estate? It means that other people envy us – they can see the attraction to living here. This is borne out by the strong flow of purchasers from Gauteng and KZN who still stream to the Western Cape. At Harcourts Platinum roughly one in eight buyers are relocating here from elsewhere in South Africa.
That means there is consistent demand for local property. And that’s healthy as strong demand and diminishing supply means upwards pressure on prices. That makes property ownership a good investment, especially in the Helderberg Basin. It’s only human to get frustrated about service delivery, protests and increased costs. But think “big picture”. There will be issues and problems wherever we live. But in most cases they are a small price to pay for living in this amazing place we call home. A few of my visitors made a comment that took me by surprise: “Thank you for not leaving”. I thought about that for a while and it hit me that it’s a message we should be sharing with all those that have been able to stay here and who contribute towards making this a better society. We are privileged to live in this beautiful place and we are wise to invest in it. Visitors leave vowing to return and spend just a little time in this amazing place we call home. Granted, not everyone living in the Western Cape enjoys the same standard of living – something that needs to change with time – but many of us have the ability to enjoy it. So, instead if focusing on all the negative issues, why not spread some positivity about the Western Cape Let’s do our bit to make things better. And reflect on the benefits of property ownership in an area that overseas visitors rate as truly world class. Thanks for not leaving. E-mail your real estate question to steve.cd@harcourts.co.za.

Citroën DS3 Cabrio racing concept car QUICKPIC
Citroën has chosen the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the annual meeting of historic racing cars, to reveal its new concept car: Citroën DS3 Cabrio Racing, a nod at Citroën’s involvement in the WRC. The car’s next appearance will be in Germany at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The Citroën DS3 Cabrio Racing was also on show in Sussex at last week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, Britain’s emblematic motor sports meeting.Thenewconceptcarcombinesthebest of the Citroën DS3 Racing with the sophistication of the DS3 Cabrio. This is a choice that makes sense, since the Citroën DS3 Cabrio is not only easy to customise, it also features optimised architecture (weighing in at just 25 kg more than the hatchback), for an exceptionally lively and agile performance, as demonstrated by Sébastien Loeb himself at Col du Corbier in the French Alps a few weeks ago. The Citroën DS3 Cabrio Racing makes a spectacular first impression, with its extreme customisation and sporting appeal. Moondark matt-textured grey paintwork is allied with gloss black 19” wheels, and black chrome inserts on the handles, boot trim and door mirrors. The concept is DS through and through, with bold identity statements such as the DS pattern featured in gloss weave on the black canvas roof with its high-tech carbon-fibre look and engraved on the door mirror housings and Carmin-coloured brake callipers, wheel hubs, doors with the wide side strips, parts of the lettering and badge. Citroën Racing know-how also takes centre stage, with special running gear, brakes and carbon kit. And the car maintains the performance of the Racing version, with a 1,6 F engine

developing 150 kW. On board, the Citroën DS3 Cabrio Racing combines performance and elegance with bucket seats featuring a new take on the DS watch strap design in three types of fabric (Napa fullgrainleather, embossedleatherandAlcantara), DS watchstrap upholstery on the bucket seats. Special DS pearl top-stitching, featured in Carmin for the first time, is used on the seats, dashboard and gearshift. Carminalsoappearsontheseathousingsand dashboard, echoing the door side strips. The Citroën DS3 Cabrio Racing concept car mindset extends through a line of lifestyle products including a child seat in three-material watchstrap-design leather upholstery, coordinated with the other seats, and helmets in the car body colours. Citroën’s new concept car is an expression of custom-built excellence, radical choices and sophistication in every detail — a convertible DS3 with the performance and sporting looks of a car tuned by Citroën Racing..

Tour Volkswagen’s factory in a custom-made bus QUICK PIC People planning to visit the Volkswagen Group South Africa’s manufacturing factory in Uitenhage can expect a tour with style and in comfort. The Volkswagen FactoryTour is now mobile, allowing visitors to rest their feet, sit back and enjoy the ride while witnessing the intricate manufacturing process of the current best-selling passenger cars in South Africa, the Polo and Polo Vivo. The new FactoryTour vehicle was custom built by two Volkswagen Motorsport employees using recycled and unused car parts from the factory. Their novel approach and ingenuity in manufacturing a vehicle by using three
incomplete cars, have resulted in a comfortable, practical and stylish vehicle. “We were initially planning to outsource the project, but we changed our minds after realising we had a vast amount of experience in the company, which we could tap for our ambitious project. The decision to use internal expertise saved the company money and delivered world-class, quality work that we are very proud of,” said Matt Gennrich, General Manager of Communications at Volkswagen South Africa. It took Johnny Allen and Cobus Barnard from Volkswagen Motorsport over three months to complete the three cars. “Each car took nearly 30 days to complete. We spent most of the time designing, sourcing parts and manufacturing the cars,” explained Barnard, who

has been with Volkswagen for nearly 10 years. The vehicle was built using spare material and parts from the Motorsport workshop and factory. “We used left-over paint from the rally cars, spare nuts and bolts as well trim offcuts to deck out the cars. We built the chassis out of old tyre racks, which we cut into required lengths. The side panels and doors were moulded from scrapped parts from the factory,” added Barnard. The FactoryTour vehicle can comfortably seat 21 people and is pulled by an electric tow motor. In the past five years, nearly 43 000 people have visited the Volkswagen manufacturing factory, and Gennrich said the FactoryTour
vehicle would help speed up the factory tours especially with senior citizens, who sometimes struggle to walk around the factory. “We hope the vehicle will give our visitors a comfortable and memorable tour of our facility where we build world-class cars,” added Gennrich. The FactoryTours take place during weekdays. There are two tours on Monday to Thursday at 09:00 and 12:00. On Friday, there is only one tour at 09:00. Bookings can be made through the Volkswagen AutoPavilion on (041) 994 5941/3. The FactoryTour includes a tour of the AutoPavilion, where some of Volkswagen South Africa’s classic cars are on display.

The new E 63 AMG 430 kW “S” model QUICKPIC Mercedes-AMG continues to champion performance, dynamism and efficiency: the newE 63 AMGisnowalsoavailableasaparticularly exclusive and powerful S-Model with an output of 430 kW and 800 Newton metres of torque.
Despite added power and enhanced performance, all models of the E 63 AMG offer high efficiency, low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. PHOTO: QUICKPIC
The AMG 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo engine continues to be the absolute pinnacle of efficiency: the combination of high performance and low fuel consumption remains unrivalled by any other competitor in this segment worldwide. The powerful V8 engine has been uprated from 386 kW and 700 Nm to 410 kW and 720 Nm of torque. With this range, Mercedes-AMG is premiering high-performance passenger car models geared for driving dynamics. The launch of the new high-performance, exclusive S-Model brings an even more attractive proposition than the AMG Performance packages, which have enjoyed great popularity to date. The S-Model forms an integral part of the new AMG model range constellation as distinctive model variants; additional AMG high-performance automobiles will become available as S-Models in future. The E 63 AMG’s appeal is also boosted by substantially enhanced value for money: customers now receive more performance and driving dynamics and a broader scope of standard equipment and appointments. The new E 63 AMG also presents a more dynamic appearance than its predecessor. The new AMG design philosophy is immediately apparent at first glance, with the “twin blade” radiator grille and the “A-wing” in the AMG front apron defining the exclusive look. The top AMG model is available locally as a sedan variant. Acceleration to 100 km/h from a standing start in 4,1 seconds provides the E 63 AMG S with a comfortable lead over the entire competition; the top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited). On the new S-Model the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine generates a maximum output of

430 kW and maximum torque of 800 Newton metres – representing an increase of 20 kW over the AMG Performance package which was previously available as an option. This enhanced performance and power results from adaptation of the engine application, an increase in peak pressure and a rise in the charge pressure from 0.9 to 1.0 bar. At 410 kW and 720 Nm, the basicmodelalsoboastsanincreaseof24 kW and 20 Nm over its predecessor. Despite added power and enhanced performance, all models of the E 63 AMG offer high efficiency, low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. The AMG 5,5. litre V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series production V8 engine around – with substantially more cubic capacity than its direct competitors. The E 63 AMG rated at 410 kW with rear-wheel drive runs on 9,8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in accordance with NEDC (230 grams of CO2). The S-Model rated at 430 kW has only marginally higher fuel consumption, at 9,8 to 9,9 litres per 100 km (232 grams of CO2). On top of this, following the implementation of internal engine measures all E 63 AMGs meet the requirements of the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard which will not take effect before 2015. Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system A very special highlight among the optional equipment and appointments is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surroundsoundsystem,developedbyMercedes-Benzand Mercedes AMG together with renowned Danish audio specialist. The sound system brings an exclusive audio experience of the very highest standard. As with all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, it comes with the standard class-leading PremiumDrive maintenance package of sixyears/100 000 km, with no customer contribution.
