A JEWEL OF A WINE FARM
Miravel wine estate for sale The Oxford Dictionary describes a jewel as something precious “of fine and enduring value”.
This maxim applies perfectly to Miravel, an exquisite and special wine farm which is exclusively marketed by Leapfrog Gordon’s Bay for R22,5 million. Miravel is a superlative wine farm in the cradle of the Helderberg mountains with sea views from almost every vantage point on its 39,30 hectare domain. The homestead and adjacent Fynbos Cottage (a fully functional and profitable self-catering cottage) offers consummate country living around the swimming pool and manicured garden. Both homes reflect the taste and application to detail of the owners, Maarten and Janine van Beuningen who have developed Miravel into a breathtaking property. The four-bedroom home comprises 450 m² under a double-volume thatch roof, with two en suite bathrooms, huge open plan kitchen, dining room and a separate lounge. An upstairs study and lounge compliments the lounge area which opens to a veranda and large, one hectare garden. A manicured garden surrounds the homestead, with automatic sprinkler system and separate brick garden shed to house garden implements. Adjacent to the main house is the delightful 80 m² Fynbos Cottage
which features a separate entrance for guests arriving for short term rentals. The cottage is as large as a conventional house, featuring two bedrooms with en suite bathroom and a spacious living-dining area with fireplace. Miravel Farm has enjoyed six consecutive seasons of successful wine production, including the farm’s flagship Sauvignon Blanc, Family Blend 1952 and Family Reserve Ella wines. Miravel also produces outstanding Merlot, Pinotage and Petit Verdot wines. The success of the farm’s grape and wine production can be ascribed to the dedication to scientific vineyard practices by owner Maarten van Beuningen, manager Francois Hanekom of Winelands Estate Management (WEM) and viticulturist Paul Wallace. Six percent of the farm’s annual 160 ton crop output is retained to bottle the Miravel brand (6 500–8 000 bottles per annum), while the remaining crop is outsourced to other cellars, wineries and winemakers. Any new owners of Miravel will have the choice of farming themselves or utilising the services of WEM, which supplies all the management and labour activities for the productive operation of the vineyards as no farm workers reside on the property. The farm has abundant water from the Theewaterskloof dam (25% of 80 000 m³), a storage dam (40% of 30 000 m³) and a borehole for domes-

tic use. Almost ninety percent (24 83 ha) of land under vine (21 70 ha) is irrigated, resulting in superb quality grapes and crops. Additional facilities include a pump station with two pumps and sand filters, independent irrigation reticulation, a drill and equipment borehole with supply line and filtration system, Eskom supplied electricity (including step up and down transformers) and cables to the homestead and pump stations. Precedent for rezoning and consent use, granted by the Stellenbosch Municipality, of a portion of the farm as a leisure and venue facility exists and could be renewed should the new owners wish to pur-
sue this option. The elevated portions of the farm have uninterrupted views of the ocean and on a clear day the whole False Bay features as background, completing a kaleidoscope canvas of unprecedented beauty. Leapfrog Gordon’s Bay principal Kevin Wearing believes that Miravel farm will appeal to winemakers who want to produce their own brand of wine or to owners who just want to enjoy retirement and the Stellenbosch winelands experience. “Determining the value of a jewel such as Miravel is not too difficult because it offers everything a new owner could hope for. All the facilities are first-rate, the two houses are
in mint condition and the location is unbeatable. Who wouldn’t want to own a Stellenbosch wine farm like this?” concludes Wearing. A tour of the farm reveals how Miravel estate has benefited from Maarten van Beuningen’s lifetime experience in the farming industry in Zimbabwe and South Africa. The farm focuses on sound viticultural practises which translates into quality grape production and premium wines. It is, in short, a wonderful farm. To arrange a viewing of Miravel Farm, call Leapfrog Gordon’s Bay on 021 856 1535 (e-mail gordonsbay@leapfrog.co.za) or Henning van Aswegen (082 344 5641) and Kevin Wearing (082 676 0109).

JAPAN : SUBARU BRAND KEEPS GROWING
Subaru’s Fuji Heavy Industries turns 60 QUICKPIC Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru vehicles, is pleased to announce that July marks the 60th anniversary of the company. The origins of FHI go back to the 1917 founding of the aircraft research laboratory which was later incorporated as Nakajima Aircraft Co. Ltd. After World War II, Nakajima Aircraft was re-organized as Fuji Sangyo Co. Ltd. Fuji Sangyo was divided into twelve separate companies in 1950 and shortly thereafter, on 15 July
1953, five of those companies merged to form Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. In 1958, FHI flew the first Japan-made T-1 jet trainer test plane and released the Subaru 360 mini car. Throughout its history, FHI has continued to deliver innovative technologies and unique, epoch-making products such as the Subaru 1000, Japan’s first mass-produced front-engined, front-wheel drive car; the Subaru Leone, Japan’s first mass-produced allwheel drive passenger car; the Subaru Legacy which led the sta-
tion wagon boom in Japan; and the EyeSight driving assist system.
The company’s technological competence has been passed down in its non-automotive businesses
as well. The aerospace business is recognised for its expertise in unmanned aircraft systems and participation in international joint development of commercial aeroplanes, while the industrial product business has been offering highly reliable general-purpose engines and other engine-driven products to support industries and everyday lives of people worldwide. Through its history of innovation, FHI has been earning trust and support from customers for its commitment to engineering excellence as the source of func-
tionality, safety and reliability of its products. Pursuant to its guiding principle “Confidence in Motion”, FHI will continue to serve as a responsible global corporate citizen and commit itself to fulfilling expectations and further enhancing the confidence of customers around the world. In South Africa, Subaru Southern Africa celebrated a fruitful 20 years of operation in 2012, Subaru vehicles being voted as the number one most loved vehicles in the 2012 RamsayMedia AutoBrand Survey for the second year in a row as well.

Toyota prepares for 2014 Dakar Rally QUICKPIC Tough just got tougher as Toyota Motorsport South Africa announced a new look team to kick start their Dakar Rally campaign in preparation for the world’s toughest race in January 2014. Dakar champions Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz will return for the 2014 race and this year they will be joined by Toyota racers Leeroy Poulter (driver) and navigator Rob Howie. Construction of the first of two all-new racing Toyota Hilux 4x4s has commenced in Toyota Motorsport’s Barbecue Downs workshop near Kyalami. The Toyota Imperial South Africa Team will return to the Namib Desert near Walvis Bay at the beginning of August for four days of testing in the sand dunes with the 2013 Toyota Hilux in which Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz finished second in this year’s Dakar Rally. “The Hilux has shown its mettle in the past two Dakar rallies and have mounted a strong charge for the top of the podium. We believe the youthful energy of Leeroy, and the experience of Giniel will combine to make a strong team in 2014,” says Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors. “Know that you carry the hearts and hopes of all South Africans with you on the back of your Hilux.” De Villiers and Von Zitzewitz, winners of the Dakar Rally in 2009, will reunite for the first time since their heroics in South America in January to begin their preparations
for their third Dakar together in the all South African team and the locally-built and developed racing Toyota Hilux. After finishing third in Toyota South Africa Motors’ first attempt at the world’s longest and toughest motorsport event in 2012 and second last year, the Toyota Imperial South Africa Team will attempt to win the iconic event in what would be a major coup for South African motorsport. The team will again enjoy the backing of Toyota South Africa Motors and South African companies the Imperial Toyota Group, Duxbury Netgear, the Innovation Group and Toyota Financial Services. “The Dakar Rally is a huge challenge and we must be realistic about our chances of winning,” said team principal Glyn Hall. “Just to complete the 8 500 km route through two countries over 14 days, with its 13 timed special stages, is an achievement. We are very proud of our podium finishes in the last two events and we will be aiming to finish on the podium again. A win would be a great reward for the whole team and for its sponsors.” The 2014 Dakar Rally starts in Rosario in Argentina on January 5 and ends in the Chilean city of Valparaiso on January 18. There will be seven special stages in Argentina as well as a rest day in Salta on January 11. Chile will host six special stages. The motorcycle competitors will also have a marathon stage and an overnight stop in Peru. Commenting on the new Dakar Hilux, Hall confirmed it would again feature independent rear suspension and would incorporate a number of changes designed to make it fast-

Hyundai Veloster: The pleasant surprise
FRANS LE ROUX If you are reading this, I would advise you to sit down. The news I am about to break might just shock you, or even worse, make you faint in disbelief. But, bare with me, this is worth it. Hyundai has made a sexy, sporty and mildly desirable coupe. Yes, the first word to that sentence is correct. I indeed uttered the word Hyundai. I know, when I returned the car to Hyundai Paarl after a few days of testing I reluctantly handed the keys back to the salesman. I am off course referring to Hyundai’s new Veloster. Barring the Tiburon, this is the most exciting car to roll off the Korean giants assemble line in years. Unfortunately the Veloster is only available in a docile 1.6 F four cylinder engine. But, like those irritating commercials on TV, there is more. Hyundai will answer the call of those desperate petrolheads in South Africa, who are only after one thing – power. The Veloster will also receive a much needed turbo, which will be strapped to its 1.6 F mill. This turbo will boost power towards the 140 kW range. Let’s get back to the current model on sale. You can have it in a 6-speed manual (which I prefer) or with a automatic dual clutch system. The price starts at R265 900. The engine pushes out a decent 103 kW with the torque figure being slightly low at 167 Nm. Bearing in
mind that this is a naturally aspirated motor, it does rev freely. The redline is reached at about 6 500 rpm, and the Veloster is eager and happy to chase it every time. Acceleration to a 100 km/h is claimed just below 9 seconds and it runs out of puff near 210 km/h. How is it to drive then? Well in short, rather good. I drove close to 400 km on varying road surfaces. Wet and dry tarmac, long straights and off course some corners. The corners were provided by the majestic Franschhoek pass and Dutoitskloof. The Veloster does its job of getting around corners quiet well. No fuss, no tyre screeching, good front end grip and general satisfactory road manners. Even with the traction switched off, I still felt in control as I pushed harder into corners. Another trick this Veloster has up its sleeve, is its three door configuration. On the driver’s side, there is one door, and you could be forgiven if you think this is a normal coupe. However, on the left side, Hyundai ran out of crazy pills and added a door. So that's two doors on the pavement/sidewalk side. The Veloster claims to be a three door 2+1 coupe, with space for four adults. If you are lucky enough to sit in front, stay there. The rear is far less comfortable due to the dramatically sloped roof. Passengers above 1,7m tall won’t be too happy on longer journeys. The rest of the interior has a certain sporty appeal. Hyundai used good quality soft-touch leather and

The silver accents on the dash, adds some welcome colour. A standard 7-inch multimedia display screen sits nicely in the middle of the centre console. It works with a mixture of switches and touchscreen interface. The boot (440F) is pretty useful considering the cars overall size. Standard features are impressive for a car in this price bracket. At the rear, a reverse camera and park assist makes parking a breeze. You
need these aids though, visibility through the rear-view mirror is not that great thanks to the glass boot lid obstructing your view. The Veloster is in my opinion a sexy car. Low slung coupe body, wide stance, 18-inch alloys and an in-your-face dual exhaust system at the back just adds to its appeal. Rivals include the likes of the Renault Megane Coupe, Mini Cooper and even Volkswagen’s Scirocco. Hyundai offers a comprehensive 5 year/150 000 km manufacturer
warranty and a 5 year /90 000km service plan on their Veloster. To conclude then, the Veloster as its available at the moment is a good car. It is a good buy and there is certainly a level of desirability that oozes from this Hyundai. But if speed and performance is your thing, I would suggest that you wait a couple of months for the much anticipated Veloster Turbo. If money is no object, I would advise a test drive. Personally I can’t wait to get my hands on one.
