RE/MAX Tre has moved! RE/MAX Tre, the real estate division of the Tre Group, has recently relocated its office to 86 Beach Road, Strand. Somerset West
Two vacant plots of land in the Somerset West area will be auctioned on 17 May. The first plot is a 1,4 ha piece of land in the sought after High Riding Estate at the foot of Sir Lowry’s Pass. The smallholding is zoned residential and is situated in an ideal position in the shadow of the Helderberg Mountains. The popular equestrian estate contains a community of smallholdings with property sizes ranging from 1 400 m² to 8 500 m². The area is rural in nature, far from the bustling crowds, with stunning views and idyllic surroundings but close enough to the town of Somerset West for all your shopping and entertainment needs. The second property on auction is portion 4 of the Farm Greystones. The erf measures 9,6768 ha in extent and is zoned agricultural. The smallholding is situated on the popular Greystones Farm, which

The area is close to Somerset West – a popular town situated 45 minutes from Cape Town. With False Bay on one side and the Hottentot and Helderberg mountain ranges on the other, with well cared for vineyards and wine farms dotted in-between, the area is in high demand for its idyllic, country-like setting. In addition, Somerset West is just a mere 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport and is close to the Cape winelands. Says Willie van Rensburg of BKB Properties: “Both these properties are in highly sought after secure estates. One offers a lifestyle purchase and the second a commercial plus lifestyle opportunity. The interest for the two has been enormous and we are expecting fierce bidding for both properties come auction day.” The auction takes place on site on Friday 17 May at 11:00. Getting your garden spring-colour ready There’s a colour revolution going on around us. Colour-blocking recently saw a major resurgence in fashion and décor, and then out popped some blooms, and people realised that their flowers had been following this trend for centuries already. Take the magnificent Ixia – known as the wand flower (how can anything possibly look this pretty without a bit of magic, right?) – that turns out brightly coloured petals, from purple to red and yellow. The centre of this flower appears in a contrasting hue, giving it that fashionable edge that warrants closer inspection. Plant it now, between April and May, in full sun or semi-shade, to get the best multicoloured results in spring. Another plant that carries this inner-outer colour clash is the Sparaxis, flashing its colour-blocking tendencies in tear-shaped splashes on its star-shaped blooms. It loves
colour so much that it’s even available as Sparaxis tricolor, with three contrasting colours laid out on its petals. It’s best grown in full sun over the same period as Ixia, but grows about a third shorter than Ixia, so be aware not to hide these dashing petals behind plants that are too tall. Ornithogalum saundersiae and Ornithogalum thyrsoides can grow up to a metre high, so place these toward the back of a group of plantings. Although the full sun-loving Ornithogalum flower is either white or greenwhite, it can also occur in bright orange or yellow shades. It doesn’t quite follow the colour-blocking movement within its blooms, but the impact these clustered flowers create when seen en masse with the long green stems is a striking colour pairing in itself, proving that colour combos can sometimes be enhanced with striking foliage. Because of its longevity as a cut flower, you
Sparaxis
Ixia
PHOTO’S: HADECO BULBS
can easily transport this colour movement into all your rooms, with the added bonus that Ornithogalum contains both summer- and winter-growing species, so you never have to be without flowers in your vases. With the common name “blazing star”, it’s obvious that Tritonia would fall into this group of colour creators. Manifesting in anything from bright orange and cream to salmon and white, this indigenous plant is found mostly in the Western Cape. Its cup-shaped blooms appear a little later in spring (October and November) than the previous three plants mentioned, although it should also be planted between April and May, in full sun or semi shade. When planting Tritonia in pots, allow the corms to almost touch one another, and then be sure to water regularly throughout the seasons if you want them to flower every year. For this amount of watering, ensure the light, sandy, friable soil is always well
drained. Sparaxis is a little less demanding, and will still grow in poor soil, but loosen this soil and add organic matter or sand for even better blooms (which obviously results in more of a colour feast). Slugs and snails will be attracted to this plant as much as you will, so keep them away. Ixia and Ornithogalum require well draining soil, and you should increase the watering of Ornithogalum just before flowering if you wish to maintain strong plant growth as the weather warms up. This is also an easy genus to multiply, simply by cutting its leaves. Ixia clones itself by cormlet production, with flowers developing from these cormlet plants the very next season, increasing the abundance of colour in your garden without much effort. After all, that’s how it should be. Colour should be natural – never forced. - Rian Swanepoel, Hadeco Bulbs.

moet betaal, ernstig wees.

KOREAN RANGE IN SA: HYUNDAI ADDS ANOTHER COMPETITOR
Hyundai’s sporty Veloster is here QUICKPIC The Veloster has joined the local model line-up of Hyundai – bringing a mixture of fun, innovation and attractive, sporty styling to the Korean carmaker’s range in South Africa. Packed with features and with cool looks that will attract new buyers as well as loyal brand customers, it represents a motoring package that offers great value. The Veloster – with a new 1.6 litre direct-injected four-cylinder petrol engine mated to Hyundai’s first EcoShift™ dual-clutch transmission – brings to a younger customer group a “2+1 door” coupé design with the functionality of a hatchback and a passenger-side forward-hinged rear door for easy rear-seat access. The Veloster with its perky 1.6-litre GDI Gamma engine adds even more variety to Hyundai’s comprehensive range of models – including the other hatchbacks – the i10, i20 and i30; the recently launched all-new Santa Fe and its fellow SUV, the ix35; the Accent and Elantra sedans and their bigger sibling, the Sonata. The Veloster delivers innovation to the compact coupé segment with its 2+1 door configuration for easy rear-seat access and is a perfect example of “New Thinking. New Possibilities.”, the company’s brand slogan. The 4,22 m sports-coupé Veloster is destined to give young, progressive buyers a sleek and distinctive design in an innovative three-door coupé form that provides practicality as well as driving pleasure. Hyundai expects the Veloster’s unique combination of style, practicality and economy to attract new buyers to the brand. Despite its coupé styling (overall height is 1,39 m), clever interior packaging means the Veloster offers class-leading cabin and cargo space. It has a wheelbase of 2,65 m, and Hyundai engineers have sculpted the Veloster’s interior to provide generous interior space for its occupants. Cargo capacity in the Veloster’s boot is 440 litres. The interior is designed to meet the demands of younger buyers. The inclusion of 60:40 folding rear seats offers a flexible luggage compartment, while high-tech gadgets and technological features are stylishly integrated within the cabin design. These elements combine to add visual appeal and to ensure the Veloster is a fun car in which to travel, whether behind the wheel or in the passenger seat.

The Hyundai Veloster is powered by a lively, efficient 1,6 litre four-cylinder GDI petrol engine, generating 103 kW maximum power and 167 Nm torque. Buyers will be offered a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or the company’s first dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This dual dry clutch transmission is Hyundai’s own, in-house developed gearbox which features two shafts – one with first, third and fifth gear, and the other with second, fourth and sixth gear. As one changes gears up or down, the clutches alternate to engage the relevant shaft for feeding the power from the engine to the front wheels. The new DCT builds on the benefits of a manual gearbox, including low fuel consumption and engaging driving characteristics, by adding the advantages of a traditional automatic transmission, such as high comfort lev-

When a more sporty drive style is required, the DCT’s gear lever can be moved to the left into sports mode where a gear will stay engaged up to higher engine revolutions before it changes, when driven in automatic mode. The driver can at any time change a gear up or down by tapping the gear lever forward or backward. Hyundai’s 5 year/150 000 km warranty and roadside assistance forms part of the Veloster package, supplemented by a 5 year/90 000 km service plan. Services are done at intervals of 15 000 km. Young drivers show little regard for road rules Goodyear road safety survey reveals South African under-25s top the list of disobedient drivers. Rules, it seems, are there to be broken – at least by many young drivers, as a recent in-depth survey by Goodyear has revealed – and this attitude could well be a contributing factor to South Africa’s distressing number of road deaths. “While National Transport Minister Ben Martins calls repeatedly for cautionary driving and an obedience of the rules of the road, Goodyear’s 2012 Young Drivers Road Safety Survey revealed that these are traits sorely lacking in the on-road mindset of South Africa’s young driver,” said Lize Hayward, Goodyear South Africa Group brand communications manager. Speeding is the number one on-road sin amongst young drivers, as they admitted in Goodyear’s Road Safety Survey. South African respondents ranked second highest (79% vs global 66%) to Polish speedsters (81%). The survey probed the behaviour of 6 400 drivers under the age of 25. It covered 16 markets (15 European countries and, for the first time, South Africa) and was designed to get inside the brain of young drivers and shed light on a wide range of factors from training through to their on-road concerns. “Speeding is a real cause for concern as the split-second decisions we take when driving are governed by the parietal lobe area of the brain, which deals with perception and spatial processing. Driving too fast does not give the parietal lobe time to catch up, so makes it more difficult for us to judge distance and read the road,” Hayward explained. In the survey, South Africans ranked highest in admitting to an improper estima-
tion of speed of traffic when changing lanes or overtaking (59% vs global 43%) and, even more frighteningly, topped the charts at disobeying traffic signals or signs (62% vs global 39%). Interestingly, the survey explored a number of national driving stereotypes: in previous studies of peer perceptions, Italians have been viewed as the least careful and Germans the most careful drivers in Europe, however Goodyear’s 2012 survey in fact found Italians to be among the least like-
South Africans ranked fifth here out of the 16 nations, with 38% admitting to testing the top limits of their cars, which is still higher than the global average of 31%. Despite extensive publicity and increasingly stringent penalties for offenders, an alarming 20% of young men (24%) and women (15%) globally admit to driving after having consumed alcohol. The knife twist for South Africans is that our youngsters come in streets ahead of that at 45% – a full 14%
ly to speed or misjudge the speed of traffic when overtaking. Similarly, the perception of German drivers is not fully supported as their young drivers were among the most likely to disobey traffic signals! German and Russian drivers are the most likely to try out the top speed of their cars, with 53% and 46% respectively saying they have pushed their motors to the maximum. This is perhaps not surprising for Germany as it is one of the only countries in the world to have no speed limit on its motorways.
more than the next worst offenders, the Spanish (31%). Speeding and drunk driving are not the only areas where young drivers are exhibiting dangerous behaviour. It appears that, despite only having had their licence for a few years, young drivers are also ignoring many important rules of the road. Goodyear’s survey revealed that 43% of men and 35% of women (average 39%) globally admitted to disobeying traffic signals or signs, with South Africans topping the list by far at an
average 62%, a full 11% higher than the Polish who are the next worst offenders. Overall results confirmed that men take more risks than women and are more inclined towards aggressive or dangerous behaviour. Young drivers who finished studying at an earlier age (18 or younger) are generally more inclined to make mistakes than those who continue their education longer. One example is that as much as 47% of those respondents who had finished studying at 18 were inclined to disobey traffic signals compared to 36% of those who continued until they were 22 or older. While transport officials initially boasted better driving, the number of reported fatalities in fact rose tragically in the days following South Africa’s 2013 Easter weekend. The final death toll from the Automobile Association (AA) has been set at 241 people killed on the roads between 28 March and 1 April, a 11% increase from 2012. Reporting these figures, AA spokesperson Gary Ronald said that “little has been done in South Africa to create change or prevent road deaths during the busiest times of the year”. “Young people are disproportionately involved in road accidents and fatalities, making it crucial to ensure that they are trained adequately in driving school,” said Hayward. “With safety at the core of our tradition, Goodyear works with the European Driving Schools Association (EFA) in Europe, the Volkswagen Driving Academy (VWDA) in South Africa and Goodyear 4x4 Academy in the Western Cape, to provide young people with more training on driving safely and responsibly, as well as ensuring optimal knowledge and maintenance of their cars and tyres.”

More Powerful single cab Ranger now on offer QUICKPIC Ford’s Ranger line-up has been expanded with the addition of two new single cab derivatives powered by Ford’s 3.2-litre diesel power train. The 3.2TDCi models will be available in either 4x2 or 4x4 guise with both offered in XLS specification and mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The 3.2-litre Duratorq TDCi five-cylinder diesel engine offers a substantial 470 Nm of torque and power rated at 147 kW. The impressive performance does not come at the expense of frugality with both models utilising only 9.3 l/100 km of fuel on a combined cycle route. Emissions are measured at 245 g/100 km on both the 4x2 and 4x4 models.* The Ranger also offers notable towing capabilities with the 4x4 model able to tow up to 3 350 kg when fitted with the range-topping diesel engine. Both derivatives can achieve a maximum of 800 millimetres wade depth level while maintaining a steady speed of not more than 7 km/h. For more information and guidelines on driving through water please refer to the Ranger owners’ manual before attempting such driving conditions. The high beltline and raised rails of the load box ensure a load box volume of 1,82 cubic metres. Pockets above the wheel wells and along the side of the box allow owners to use timber inserts to carry full sheets of plasterboard or plywood. “The Ranger has been designed to cater to a wide spectrum of customers,” says Gavin Golightly, Ford marketing manager. “Both fleet buyers and small business owners will now be able to take advantage of the greater selection of models on offer while enjoying the quality, fuel efficiency, safety and smart technology that have made the Ranger such a popular choice with South African consumers.”
All Ranger derivatives except the base units come with a 5 year/90 000 km service plan and a comprehensive 4 year/120 000 km warranty with service intervals of 15 000 km. Custom-
ers will also benefit from 3 years of roadside assistance and a 5 year corrosion warranty as part of the Ford Ranger package. Additionally, Ranger 4x4 customers receive free off-
road driver training. Pricing starts at R315 000 for the Ranger 3.2 XLS HR 6MT single cab diesel and rises to R361 900 for the Ranger 3.2 XLS 4x4 6MT single cab diesel.

New Clio makes its marque
QUICKPIC
Capitalising on the model’s hallmark strengths, the New Clio is sure to win over customers - new and old - thanks to its attractive blend of emotive styling borne out of the DeZir concept car revealed in 2012. “Cars are not just for getting us around, they can also inspire dreams and desires,” says Laurens van den Acker, Renault Design Director. “From initial concept through to production, the sensual lines of New Clio have been focused on total seduction. It is so gorgeous that it makes you want to eat it.” Wayne van der Merwe, senior product manager at Renault South Africa concurs, describing New Clio as “a car that you want to get up close to and personal with.” A meeting of fashionable and functional, the fourth generation New Clio remains the ‘small car with big car attributes. In many instances, the new arrival is unparalleled in the small car (B-class) segment and much attention to detail has been paid to the on-board experience of its occupants. A host of rich and innovative features make their first appearance (as standard depending on the variant), each providing a decisive competitive advantage. New Clio’s sporty, coupé-like silhouette is accentuated by the integrated rear door handles concealed close to the rear quarter lights while the ratio of wheel-size to vehicle-height has been fine-tuned to afford a more dynamic look. The lower ride-height benefits the car’s aerodynamics while pronounced shoulder lines make the fourth generation New Clio even more visually distinctive and appealing. Style by design, New Clio is the embodiment of Renault’s new design rebirth which is simple, sensuous and warm. Three words which, thanks to the Renault engineering team’s skill in matching the vehicle to the design team’s
original vision, make it a car high on emotion inside and out. Front-end styling featuring a Renault logo more prominent than previously, set bold and upright on the radiator grille against a gloss black background, makes New Clio’s sleek, sporty silhouette instantly recognisable. Styling is made even more distinctive by headlight units boasting chrome detail and LED daytime running lights which are standard across the range. While the exterior styling suggests coupé, all three variants have five doors with the rear door handles concealed close to the rear quarter lights. Achieving balanced proportions was a priority throughout the design process and the ratio of wheel-size to vehicle-height has been fine-tuned to afford a more dynamic look. New Clio stands 1 448 mm high, is 4 062 mm in length, 1 732 mm wide (excluding mirrors) and sits 45 mm closer to the ground than its predecessor. A steeply raked windscreen adds to its dynamic look and feel as does the improved onethird glass to two-thirds body ratio when New Clio is seen from the side. The lower rideheight gives it an assertive stance and is indicative of a strong personality. Its large-diameter wheels pushed 15 mm outwards compared to previous models, fill and finish flush with the wheel arches, while pronounced but proportionate shoulder lines gives the newcomer substantial presence. Modern, welcoming and ergonomic and with a dashboard sculpted to resemble an aircraft wing, one has the sensation of sitting in a cockpit. Designed to complement the exterior styling and with finely appointed details throughout the cabin, New Clio’s interior inspires strength and confidence, combining beauty with functionality. Features include an optimally positioned central interactive tablet console with a host of multimedia functions, a digital speedome-

Styling on the new Clio is made even more distinctive by headlight units boasting chrome detail and LED daytime running lights which are standard across the range. ter, the use of plush, high-tech materials throughout, comfortable seating and a combination of high-class inserts (depending on the model) make for a modern, ergonomic design. Thanks to Renault’s engineering excellence and expertise in power train development, the new 66kW Turbo engine boasts amazing power and torque for a low capacity engine: ) A very low inertia turbo for quick response at low engine revs: 135 Nm at 2 500 rpm (90 percent of this figure available from 1 650 rpm to ensure good pick-up, acceleration, responsiveness and driving enjoyment) ) Peak power output measured at 66 kW at 5 250 rpm ) Aluminium engine block and cylinder head (15 kg weight saving compared with equivalent cast iron block)
) Ultra light camshafts: The camshafts are hollow tubes further contributing to the engine’s weight saving. The camshaft timing control adopts a scavenging strategy that controls valves at low engine speeds which, together with VVT (variable valve timing), improves responsiveness ) Thermo-management that optimises the heating and cooling of the engine for improved performance As is the case across Renault’s entire product range, the three New Clio variants come standard with a 5-year/150 000 km mechanical warranty, a 3-year/45 000 km service plan and a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty. Pricing starts at R149 000 for the Authentique and rises to R179 000 for the Turbo Dynamique.
AUTO 28 Mercedes-Benz A-Class: The extraordinary newbie Donderdag
BOLAND SOLD
25 April, 2013
HANJO STIER The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a huge deal. Those extraordinary looks guaranteed it phenomenal attention even before its launch. Tons of online information, international reports and a few pre-launch local appearances mean that, unless you live under a rock, you already know about this car. It makes me feel like I am preaching to the converted, but it is concrete proof that Mercedes-Benz has produced an absolute stunner. Even those who thought that Mercs were for grandparents, have taken notice, if not researched and googled the newbie. Mercedes graciously gave all journalists at the launch an extra edge – part of the presentation was done by Mark Fetherston, the A’s chief designer. I was seated next to this pleasant Brit at lunch and his passion for the vehicle’s radical new look infected everyone around him. Based on solid proportions and detail, a lot of work makes sure that the little Mercedes hatchback stands out from the crowd. The Germans also confirmed that A means Attack – on newer, younger customers while the B-Class serves MPV clientele. Mercedes uses its new frontwheel-drive platform for the AClass, B-Class, upcoming CLA and future models; AMG and four-wheel-drive versions included. Start/stop systems, superb aerodynamics, high efficiency engines and gearboxes A250 Sport
or 135 g/km. The A-Class’ independent suspension rolls on 17 to 19-inch wheels and promises the magic mix of sporty handling and ride comfort. Except for big wheels at small speeds, our testdrive established that they had pulled it off; the A-Class feels nimble and planted on mountain passes and highways alike. A250 Sport obviously has masses of clout and its AMG-developed front suspension provides the most involving ride. It feels more nervous than the others while A200’s performance is sedate; the sparing A180 CDI even more so while the A220 CDI was a good combination – fast and frugal. Mercedes fitted the A-Class with impressive standard kit, over and above central locking or electric power steering, every car gets big-boy toys like Attention Assist, Pre-Safe, multiple air bags, ABS brakes, EBD, ESP, etcetera. Optional extras include a myriad of style packages and trim choices. All A-Classes are sold with a two-year unlimited mileage warranty and PremiumDrive six year 100,000 km full maintenance plan. Prices are R300 000 for the A180 CDI (add 10 grand for auto), R355 000 for an A220 CDI, R273 718 for A180, R296 632 for A200 and R392 606 for A250 Sport. That is not exactly cheap but neither is the A-Class. We had words like exciting, safe, luxurious and comfortable thrown at us and can confirm them all. And let’s not forget the prelaunch hype about its looks which might be a very lonely but valid reason why you want one. – Galimoto Media obviously has masses of clout and its AMG-developed front suspension provides the most involving ride. ensure they are very eco-friendly. The interior has also been created with quality and individuality in mind; if the outside wasn’t a clue, this will be your next reminder that they started with a clean sheet of paper. Mercedes-Benz SA aims to be the leading luxury brand by 2016 and a lot of that work will be down to the A-Class. Demand already exceeds supply and South Africa currently gets five models, all turbo four-cylinders. A180 and A200 are 1.6 L petrols
(90 kW/200 Nm and 115 kW/250 Nm), A250 Sport is a 2L petrol (155 kW/350 Nm), A180 CDI is a 1.5 L or 1.8 L diesel (80 kW/250 Nm or 80 kW/260 Nm) and A220 CDI is a 2.2 L diesel (125 kW/350 Nm). Next to a six-speed manual gearbox (A180’s and A200), Mercedes also offers their 7G-DCT double-clutch transmission. Claimed fuel consumption ranges from 3.8 to 4 L/100 km for diesels and 5.5 to 5.8 L/100 km for petrols while average CO2 emissions start at just 105
