Lise Beyers TWEE families van Paarl-Oos is op die vooraand van Kersfees in rou gedompel, nadat twee jarelange skoolvriende Vrydagnag saam in ’n tragiese motorbotsing gesterf het. Lionel Philander (28), Eben Adams (27) en Blanche Moses was omstreeks middernag onderweg na Wellington toe die gru-botsing plaasgevind het. Hulle was waarskynlik onderweg om Moses na haar woning te neem nadat hulle vriende besoek het in New Orleans. Volgens ’n polisieverslag, het hulle in Adams se roeskleurige Toyota Corolla gery. Hy het glo beheer oor sy voertuig verloor toe hy ’n ander motor probeer verbysteek het in Jan van Riebeeckrylaan by Daljosafatstadion. ’n Aankomende bakkie met nege insittendes het die Toyota teen die sy getref. Philander het met hierdie slag bo-op Adams beland en albei is op slag dood.

Help battle abuse of women, children THE annual 16 Days of Activism against violence against women and children was once again launched with much fanfare last week. Rape, child abuse, sexual and emotional harassment of especially women and children is rampant, despite a worldrenowned Constitution and a legislative overhaul that safeguards women’s rights. According to statistics, a woman gets raped every 17 seconds in South Africa and one out of six men has raped a woman. Thus the 16 Days of Activism campaign was launched to bring about awareness of this scourge. During this period of time South Africans are challenged to declare a truce on violence against women and children, and to ultimately make it a permanent one. The campaign aims to generate greater awareness of the negative impact of violence on the development of women and children. It also aims to stress the importance of partnerships between government and civil society in eradicating abuse. Victims and survivors of violence are

Berg River embankment blues

BEELD. Die bekende Voortrekkervrou van die Paarl is terug. Hierdie kenmerkende standbeeld wat op die fasade van Absabank in Hoofstraat pronk, het vroeër vanjaar byna vir altyd verdwyn, as dit nie vir bewaringsbewuste Paarliete was nie. Daar is reeds aan die oorspronklike standbeeld begin timmer toe die werk op hul aandrang gestaak is. Die beeld het reeds begin kraak en kon dus nie ten volle gerestoureer word nie. Maar ’n presiese afgietsel is daarvan gemaak en pronk nou trots waar die Voortrekkervrou al dekades lank tuisgaan en ’n ogie oor die Paarlse middedorp hou.

Bloody murder in Mbekweni MBEKWENI police were shocked at the brutal murder of a woman in Mbekweni this past weekend. The bloody body of Letitia Muketiwa (37) was found in her home on Saturday evening. Her throat had been slit and she had multiple stab wounds on her body. According to police, neighbours had said that they had heard Muketiwa and her live-in boyfriend argue in their shack in C-block, White City. They became worried when they heard Muketiwa scream numerous times and then suddenly become quiet.

A neighbour then broke down the locked door to the shack and was greeted by Muketiwa’s bloodied body. Her boyfriend had escaped through the roof of the shack, but handed himself over to police later that evening. A post mortem revealed that apart from stab wounds, she also suffered a fractured skull due to a blow to the head with a blunt object. Lakhikhaya Bakajana (26) appeared in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was charged with murder. He has been remanded in custody until 5 December.

RESIDENTS of Churchill Street along the banks of the Berg River in Paarl, are up in arms over mounds of dust which is daily being blown into their homes. This comes after the embankment here, near the Market Street Bridge, was earlier this year dug for the construction of the new sewage pipeline. Crimes against women and children THE gruesome murder of a woman in Mbekweni comes as a shock. Ironically, this brutal murder comes on the eve of the annual government initiative, 16 days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children. This campaign was born due to the many daily atrocities which are committed against the most vulnerable in our society. During November and December this campaign sets off with much fanfare again, but it seems that once the 16 days are over, the plight of abused women and children is forgotten. Despite a world-renowned constitution and a legislative overhaul that safeguards women’s rights, South Africa is still home to high levels of violence against its women and children. And it seems that no amount of policing can prevent most of these acts. Unless socio-economic upliftment and improved education is focused upon by the powers that be, this will never change. But chiefly - moral values should be instilled at a young age, and the punishment should fit the crime.

Save our Arboretum act now! MY dog and I must be among the more frequent visitors to the Arboretum and derive great enjoyment and benefit from our walks in this tranquil environment. Our thanks to all who look after this area, mowing the grass, picking up litter which is so unnecessarily strewn about and recently removing the lower branches off the trees, thereby increasing visibility and security. My only reservation is, not only my safety, but that of every person in the Arboretum. I accept that safety and security is a concern for everyone whether at home or in the Arboretum.

The mountains above the Main Street have become a preferred area for walking because the cyclists there provide an element

of safety. I also spoke to Mr Venter about a clump of Port Jackson trees near the railway bridge which provide a hiding place for thieves and shelter for vagrants and as such brings a high risk of fire. Apparently these trees are on MetroRail property and bureaucracy prevents the council from removing them. It is in the interest of both the Arboretum and MetroRail who regularly have security personnel watching this particular area for cable thieves, to remove the potential hazard. L Roberts

Armed robbery rocks local school ANOTHER armed robbery has rocked Wellington - the third such incident in barely two weeks. The latest victim was a private school adjacent to Diemersfontein Estate. The incident occurred at 11:00 last Thursday morning when three men casually strolled onto the school premises and made their way towards the office. Here one of the suspects lifted his shirt to reveal a firearm and demanded money. They took the money, then fled on foot. No one was injured and no children were present during the incident. School authorities said that this had been a wake-up call. “We have implemented stringent security measures to prevent anything like this from happening again.”

The previous Saturday, the SPCA in Wellington was also robbed by armed robbers and a week before that, Colibri Factory Shop in Blignaut Street was also hit by robbers. “We are following all leads,” says police spokesperson Lieut Diana Fransman. “We are also not dismissing the possibility that these armed robberies can be linked to a single gang.” Furthermore, Fransman urged the public, and especially businesses and farms, to be exceptionally vigilant at this time of year. “Many people are going to be in possession of large amounts of cash due to end of the year salaries and bonuses, as well as Christmas shopping. Maar met sy afsterwe is die kontrak beëindig. ”Ná mnr Hougarth se afsterwe, is daar aan die onwettige bewoners kennis gegee om die eiendom te ontruim. Die onwettige bewoners het die kennisgewings verontagsaam en voortgegaan om wederregtelik daar te woon. “Die kerk hét die oortollige eiendom waarop die huis staan, verkoop en die kooptransaksie vereis dat die onwettige bewoners dit ontruim. Daarom het die kerk regstappe geneem om die onwettige inwoners te ontruim. Die kerk het alreeds twee uitsettingsbevele vir hulle ontruiming verkry en sal verdere regstappe neem om die onwettige inwoners te ontruim.”

Diefstal skiet hoogte in

KOOR AKTIEF. Die Volwassekoor van die Frank Pietersen Musieksentrum het ’n vol program vandeesmaand. Hulle tree op 3 Desember op by die Musieksentrum, op 4 Desember by die Afrikaanse Taalmonument in hul Kerskonsert en op 11 Desember in die Amfiteater op Paarlberg. DIE diefstal van motorvoertuie gaan ongehinderd voort in die Paarl. En weer eens is Isuzu-bakkies geteiken, met twee hiervan wat op een nag gesteel is. Dit is veral ouer modelle Isuzu’s wat gesteel word, vermoedelik vir taxi. Die eerste bakkie het vroeg Sondagoggend verdwyn vanuit ’n erf in Peterstraat, Noorder-Paarl. Die eienaar het die bakkie voor sy motorhuis geparkeer, maar vroeg dié oggend was dit skoonveld. Terselfdertyd het ’n Isuzu-bakkie ook in Noorder-Paarl verdwyn vanuit Martinstraat. Die bakkie is oornag op die sypaadjie voor sy huis geparkeer. In Suider-Paarl het ’n wit Nissan-bakkie tussen 22 en 25 November vanaf die plaas Picardi verdwyn, terwyl die sleutel daarvan in die besit van die eienaar was.

A spokesperson of the SPCA said that those who intend keeping Huskies must be aware that this breed needs large amounts of exercise and attention and they are known to wander from home. Road closures on Sunday APPROXIMATELY 6 000 cyclists will participate in Die Burger Cycle Tour which passes through Paarl on Sunday morning 4 December. The cycle race over 92 km starts at Stellenbosch High, then passes through Pniel and travels to Paarl along the R45, entering Paarl via Main Street South. At De Soete Inval cyclists will turn into New Eskdale Street travelling towards the Paarl Mall. From Paarl Mall traffic circle, cyclists travel along Arboretum Street to Jan van Riebeeck Drive, then via Lustigan Road and Sonstraal Road back onto Jan van Riebeeck Drive (R301) in Dal Josaphat, and from there to Wellington. From Wellington they cycle back to Stellenbosch on the R44 via Champagne Street, Agter Paarl and Klapmuts. Those cycling the shorter route (44 km) will cycle through Simondium to Klapmuts, missing Paarl and Wellington Expect short delays as a result of the race. Japie nie net ’n skaap nie Lise Beyers MENSE het vreemde troeteldiere soos slange en apies, maar dit is nie aldag dat jy ’n skaap en ’n hond saam sien stap nie. Dit is presies waaraan inwoners van Val de Vie-landgoed die afgelope jaar gewoond geraak het, nadat ’n skaap hiér as troeteldier intrek geneem het. Maureen de Waal het ’n jaar gelede vanaf Johannesburg per motor na Kaapstad gereis. Sy vertel dat toe sy en haar man in die hartjie van die Karoo gery het op die N1, het hulle ’n verdwaalde lammetjie langs die pad gewaar. “Daar was geen ander skape in die omgewing nie en die lam was weens dehidrasie baie swak. Ons het ’n veearts gekontak op ’n nabye dorp en hy het gesê dat ons die lam melkmoetgeeenverderversorg.Hywastwyfelagtig of die lam sou oorleef.” So is die De Waals, die lam en bababottels vol koeimelk na hul huis by die spog landgoed, Val de Vie. Japie het aangesterk en toe ook sommer vol streke geraak. Hy het ook met die De Waals se Jack Russell-terriër, Stoffel, nes ’n hond begin speel. “Japie was van die begin af baie gemaksugtig. Hy het selfs saam met my man op die rusbank gelê en televisie kyk. “Ons het ’n huis vir hom gemaak in ons motorhuis, maar hy het steeds die hele huis en tuin volgestap.” Maar Japie het ’n paar keer by die veearts beland toe hy siek geraak het omdat hy huishoudelike goedere probeer vreet het. “Hy moes selfs een aand by die dierehospitaal oorslaap hieroor en ek was siek van bekommernis.” En later het hy weer ’n draai by die hospitaal gemaak om ontknater te word. Maar nou ’n jaar later is Japie nie meer ’n kleine lammetjie nie, maar ’n volgroeide vet skaap. Hy het dus verhuis na ’n perdekamp op die landgoed waar hy steeds goed versorg word. “Ek en Stoffel kuier ten minste twee maal ’n dag by Japie. Ons het vir hom ’n stalletjie gebou en elke aand word hy hierin toegesluit en soggens weer uitgelaat. “Hy stap ook baie graag saam met ons.” Japie is so bederf dat hy selfs sy eie reënbaadjie het, omdat hy glad nie daarvan hou om nat te word nie. Maureen vertel dat sy die afgelope jaar met nuwe oë na skape kyk. “Almal sê dat hulle so dom is, maar nie Japie nie. Hy verstaan wat ek hom sê en hy reageer op bevele. Hy is ook baie jaloers op my en as iemand te veel aandag aan my gee, sal hy eenvoudig vir hulle uit die pad uit begin stap. Japiekomskuurgraagteensymensvriende en wil sy kop gekrap hê. En dit is ’n gegewe dat Japie beslis nie op die etenstafel sal beland nie.

Handel’s Messiah performed THE grounds of Lac de la Lune in Franschhoek will be opened for the first time to host a Christmas presentation of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday 4 December at 16:30. The Messiah, undoubtedly one of the most well loved pieces of sacred music, will be performed by the Canticum Novum Choir accompanied by the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Louis van der Watt. Waar is sy Bybel? ’n KAPENAAR, Philip Spies (31) het verlede Saterdag omstreeks 10:00 op die N1 gery op sy motorfiets onderweg na Worcester, toe iets van sy fiets afwaai. Hy het naby die Sonstraal-afrit gestop en gestap na waar die item afgewaai het. Toe hy omdraai, sien hy ’n man die rugsak gryp wat by die fiets was en weghardloop. Benewens sy beursie asook klere en bril, was die Bybel van sy sendeling-oupa (90) in die rugsak. Hy was op pad Worcester toe om dit vir hom terug te neem. Gold medal for Grande Provence THE Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate in Franschhoek has received international recognition at the 2011 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC). They received gold for ‘The Grande Provence 2006’ , ‘Silver Best in Class’ for the Grande Provence Chardonnay 2010 and Grande Provence Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 and silver for the Grande Provence Sauvignon Blanc 2011 as well as the Grande Provence Shiraz 2007,

Athletics projects set for 2012

WITH the 2011 athletics season rapidly drawing to a close, a number of capacity building projects are scheduled for January in the Boland to assist athletes, coaches and technical officials in their preparation for the 2012 season. The first capacity building project will be an advanced coaching training camp that will take place at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch from 5 to 8 January which will cater for athletes and coaches who need guidance in preparation for the 2012 Track and Field Championships in April and eventually for the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games. THE organisers do not want to give anything away for the more than 100 competitors who will take part in Saturday’s three hour long NavChallenge in and around Paarl, but they suggest four spots for spectators to watch the challenge from. The NavChallenge presented by Capestorm will start at Laborie Wine Farm at 08:00 and takes teams of two trail runners and mountain bikers through the beautiful Paarl area including Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve on a navigation challenge. Registration will take place at 06:30 and the prize-giving will take place at 12:30.

The race is held over three days and will lead experienced mountain-bikers through more than 200 km of some of the most spectacular terrain in the Boland – including 4 600 m of climbing. Community Games start THE Drakenstein Municipality’s Community Games will start on 7 December and will continue until the final on 16 December. The games will be held at a different venue every day, from 10:00 until 16:00. The children will take part in athletics, rugby, cricket, soccer, netball, indigenous games, dancing, singing and art. This games aim at providing a platform for the youth to create a culture of continuous learning. The games kick off at Simondium Primary School on 7 December, followed by New Orleans High School (8 December), Paulus Joubert Primary School (9 December), Mbekweni rugby field (12 December), Van Wyk’s Vlei play park in Wellington (13 December) and Saron rugby field (14 December). All children from u.9 to u.17 are welcome to attend. Children will be under supervision du-

During the week there will be coaching clinics where teams for the respective sport and age groups will be selected to represent their area at the final day at the Dal Josaphat Stadium on 16 December. “Our aim is to utilise sport and culture as a medium to encourage mass participation and to assist in the need for talent identification within the Drakenstein area,” says Maawyah Moerat, head of Sport of the Drakenstein Municipality. “An awareness program, relating to the disadvantages of drug abuse, social and mental abuse and gangsterism, will form part of the event,” he added. NUWE BAAN. ’n Nuwe basketbalbaan is onlangs by Hoërskool Franschhoek in gebruik geneem onder leiding van Kyle Ray (Delta Trust) en Doug Gurr van Kusasa. Leerders en onderwysers het mekaar die stryd aangesê met die inwyding van die baan en almal sien uit na die 2012-seisoen.

Die spanne is in twee afdelings ingedeel en die wenners sal op 15 Desember in die finaal speel om die SA Kampioenspan te bepaal. In afdeling A neem die Boland A (Foxes), WP A (Seals), WP B (Sharks), Gauteng A (Gryphons), Gauteng B (Gryphons), Namibië A (Hawks) en Natal A (Panthers) deel. Derik Bezuidenhout (16), ’n stoeier van die Paarl Stoeiklub, het tydens die onlangse SA Graderingskampioenskappe silwer medaljes verower in die Grieks-Romeinse- en Vrystyl in die 76 kg tot 84 kg gewigsklas. Derik, wat maar in 2008 begin stoei het, het vanjaar tydens die SA Jeugkampioenskappe in beide die style brons medaljes in sy gewigsklas verower. Peoples is uitgeboul vir slegs 86 lopies, met net die kaptein, Edwin Jacobs (35) wat enige weerstand kon bied met die kolf. Die tuisspan behaal die wentotaal van 91/1 redelik maklik, om sodoende ’n nege paaltjie oorwinning te verseker. Die tweede span het op sy beurt sy onoorwonne status behou en Paarl-Oos III met 8 paaltjies verniel. Peoples moet net 82 lopies vir ’n oorwinning aanteken, danksy vernietigende boulwerk deur die kaptein, Riaan Damonse (8/12) wat agt paaltjies laat kantel het. Hy was goed bygestaan deur Gareth April (2/10). Die Tiere eindig op 84/2, met Brett Mitchell (36) en Herscelle Barron (36) wat goed gekolf het. Paarl members will take part in record gym attempt ON Monday 5 December Virgin Active members of Paarl will join members across the globe who will simultaneously pedal during a spinning class to beat the current world record for the most people cycling on stationary spinners. The international challenge will see clubs in Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Australia, Portugal and South Africa participating at the same time. The class will commence at 20:00 South African time at all 98 clubs in South Africa and participants will be asked to cycle for 15 consecutive minutes. The process will be officiated by a timekeeper alongside the spinning class instructor, while an independent wit-

ness verifies the number of participants at each location. Virgin Active South Africa’s group exercise manager, Ceri Hannan, says the idea was born following a suggestion from a member. “We are always open to trying new and exciting things. A member at one of our clubs in the UK suggested doing a group exercise class and setting a record in aid of a charity she is supporting and we loved the idea. “We then decided to take the record attempt global uniting our members across the world,” Hannan added.
