’n KATMOORDENAAR het vir die tweede keer in twee maande toegeslaan in Noorder-Paarl. Wynand Haasbroek van Truterstraat het verlede week op dié gesin se sterwende kat afgekom in hul tuin. “Ek was op pad werk toe, toe my buurman my aandag op Rudi vestig wat onder ’n bos gelê het. “Ek kon dadelik sien dat hy besig was om te vrek. Skuim het uit sy mond geborrel en hy kon skaars beweeg.” Die kat het binne enkele minute gesterf nadat Haasbroek op hom afgekom het. “Ek weet nie hoe lank hy daar gelê het nie, maar ek kon sien dat hy ’n baie pynlike dood gesterf het.” Dit is die tweede kat binne twee maande wat die Haasbroek-gesin aan die dood afstaan. Hul ander kat het op dieselfde wyse gesterf. “Albei ons katte was baie geheg aan ons familie. Hulle was baie lief vir kinders en het nie ver gedwaal nie. Rudi sou soms by ons bure se kinders gaan speel. Niemand het ooit gekla nie.” Wynand se ma, Mimi, het Rudi se liggaam dieselfde oggend na die Boulevard Dierehospitaal geneem. Hier is van sy organe verwyder en na ’n laboratorium gestuur vir toetse om vas te stel waaraan hy dood is. En Vrydag is die resultate met skok ontvang: Rudi is vergiftig met ’n verbode gifstof, dieldrin. Hierdie insekdoder is ’n verbode middel in Suid-Afrika en die meeste lande wêreldwyd. Veearts dr Emile du Plessis het gesê dat ’n dier wat met dieldrin vergiftig word, ’n baie pynlike dood sterf. Hy het bevestig dat dieldrin reeds vanaf 1983 ’n verbode middel is en nie meer verkoop mag word nie. Haasbroekisvasbesloteomniedie saak daar te laat nie en het ’n klag by die Paarl polisiestasie gelê. Ek besef dat hierdie diens geld moes kos en was derhalwe verbaas dat dit gratis aangebied is.” Volgens feesdirekteur Gerhard Meyer was die aanbieding van die fees op Paarlberg ’n uiters uitdagende projek, veral omdat die grondeienaar, die Departement van Openbare Werke, nie al die terreinvoorbereiding betyds voltooi het nie. “Ons moes reuse-uitgawes aangaan om te verseker dat die fees wel voortgaan. “My gevoel is egter dat dit die beste skuif is en dat dit die gerieflikste feeskonsep in die land is vir feesgangers wat uiteraard mos die kliënte is, en waarsonder ons nie ’n fees kan aanbied nie. Xmas Fund a helping hand for the needy THE Paarl Post Christmas Fund annually collects funds for the Western Cape Community Chest, which supports about 30 deserving local charities. Paarl Post readers are invited to contribute to this year’s fundraising campaign in the run up to Christmas. Election of ward committees completed THE 31 ward committees of the Drakenstein Municipality have been elected in a free and fair process under the supervision of the Independent Electoral Commission. The ward committee members must now begin with their important task to serve as the main link between the community and the administration of the Municipality, to identify needs and improve communication. The committee is a non-political advisory body chaired by the Ward Councillor. The Ward Councillor communicates directly with the Speaker’s Office and the Integrated Development Planning (IDP) Unit. Ward Committees must meet at least four times a year and are responsible for at least two public meetings with the community to

gather new inputs and to report back. In a further public meeting each year, the community will also receive the Executive Mayor and Mayoral Committee for direct interaction. Duties of the ward committee members include representation of all ward residents, identifying concerns and acting as spokespersons for the ward residents. They should also use the Ward Councillor projects to improve service delivery to the ward residents, identify and drive it. All minutes of meetings must be submitted to ensure that the information also reaches the IDP Office. Ward committee members will receive training at the end of November and then receive their identification cards.

Hijack drama at Pniel THE Groot Drakenstein police arrested four suspects on Saturday, shortly after they had hi-jacked a vehicle in Lanquedoc, Groot Drakenstein. The members on patrol came across a suspicious vehicle in Pniel at about 02:00. When the occupants of the vehicle noticed the police vehicle, they sped away. A high-speed chase followed, during which the driver of the vehicle in which the fugitives where trying to escape left the road near the entrance to Lanquedoc, crashing into a concrete wall. The four occupants then

jumped out and fled on foot. The help of the dog unit was called in and an intensive search was launched for the escapees. It was then that the police came across an injured man in Lanquedoc, who said that his car had been hijacked. It was then established that he is the owner of the black Peugeot which the fugitives had driven. He explained that he had been dragged from his vehicle and beaten by the suspects. Four suspects were apprehended and appeared in the Franschhoek Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Cowardly measures

THE killing of a cat in Paarl North by means of poisoning, leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. The death of this animal was long, slow and excruciatingly painful. Unfortunately this is nothing new in the area. There have been a number of poisonings and even reports of cats dying after being caught in traps. In some cases, cats are caught, transported into the mountains and left to fend for themselves. A local vet says that cats often go missing and his conclusion is that these cats have been killed or run over, because normally a cat will find its own way home. There is no excuse for people to resort to poisoning animals. Yes, cats can sometimes be a pest to neighbours, and cat owners should ensure that their pets are neutered or spayed to curb their wandering streak. But the irritated party should discuss the problem of a problem pet with their neighbours and not take drastic, cruel and cowardly measures such as poisoning.

Dit is daar waar die versameling en bewaring van ons geskiedkundige rekords formeel begin het, waarmee geskiedskrywers sedert die 1800s begin werk het om die verhaal van Suid-Afrika te konstrueer, sover ons skriftelike bronne kan aanwend. Hierdie argiefversamelings (dokumente, kaarte, geboueplanne en later ook foto’s) verteenwoordig die volledigste gedokumenteerde geskiedenis van enige land ter wêreld – vir die eerste twee eeue daarvan - as erkende, begrensde geografiese gebied. Met “geskiedenis” word bedoel verslaglewering oor die herkoms en samekoms van ons huidige nasie; hoe ons hier gekom het en hoe ons as ’n lappieskombers-gemeenskap met uiteenlopende waardesisteme ontwikkel het. Aanvanklik het die Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), sedert 1652, daarop gefokus om daaglikse verslae van die doen en late van die grootste maatskappy van alle tye en die eerste multi-nasionale maatskappy in menseheugenis, in te samel. Die maatskappy-direkteure, die Here Sewentien, wou weet wat in hul kolonies gebeur sodat ordentlik boekgehou kon word. Daar was geen politieke motiewe nie – dit sou kom met die aankoms van die Britte, reeds in 1795 - maar dit was ook waarom hierdie argiewe as outentiek beskou kan word. Die dagboek- en notuleskrywers wat ons oudste historiese dokumente geskep het, was nie op propaganda ingestel was nie. Hierdie skrywes was nie bedoel om deur enigiemand anders as die maatskappy-direkteure gelees te word nie, maar ons weet ook dat die skrywers uit die perspektief van hulle tyd geskryf het, net soos ons vandag steeds doen. Daarom is dit nodig om soveel moontlike bronne sáám te gebruik wanneer navorsing gedoen word.

Vandag is daar ’n nuwe belangstelling in geskiedenis – Giliomee en Mbenga se Nuwe Geskiedenis van Suid-Afrika boekstaaf die sogenaamde voorgeskiedenis van Suid-Afrika deur te verwys na die heel eerste inwoners. Vandag word dit algemeen aanvaar dat geskiedskrywing aangevul moet word deur geskiedvertelling - sodat gapings in dokumentasie gevul kan word en om ander perspektiewe op bestaande konstruksies te bied. Hier het die Kaapse argief ook ’n begin gemaak deur ’n “Oral History”-projek te loods. Heel gepas was die onderwerp van hierdie projek die Roelandstraat Gevangenis (ons derde tronkgebou ná die Kasteel en die Breekwater), die standplaas waarop die argief vandag staan. Onderhoude is met 20 oud-gevangenes en bewaarders, asook met familielede van sodanige betrokkenes, gevoer. Die dokumentasie van hierdie fassinerende projek, en van familiegeskiedenisse, erflatings, slawegeskiedenis, ontwikkeling van plase, munisipaliteite en staatsdepartemente, kan hier nagevors word deur enigiemand op weeksdae tussen 8:00 en 16:00, asook Donderdae tot 19:00 en vasgestelde Saterdae. Sommige pasiënte het al op stoele gelê en slaap, wat vir my ’n aanduiding was dat hulle al lank daar gewag het. By nadere gesprekke met pasiënte moes ek uitvind dat sommige al sedert die middag daar sit om deur ’n dokter gehelp te word. Dit was hardverskeurend om te sien hoe ’n man op sy knieë gaan sit het van die pyn. ’n Meisie wat in haar oog gesteek was het die hele tyd gehuil. ’n Man met glasstukke aan sy oogbank het toe maar die aftog geblaas en is net met sy oop wond huis toe. Nog was dit nie die einde van ons dilemma nie. My familielid was in pyn en ek het hom net be-

tyds in die toilet gekry om te vomeer. Die ure het stadigaan verbygetik, maar niemand is ooit vanaf die wagkamer geroep nie. Teen 17:00 het ek besluit om huis toe te gaan. My vrou het by die familielid gebly. Die Sondagoggend is ek terug hospitaal toe. My familielid is eers om 08:30 gehelp, maar die dokter het hom meegedeel dat die ongevalle daar is vir messteke en wonde. Die dokter het hom na ’n kliniek verwys en hom nog ’n brief ook gegee om ’n kliniek te besoek. Ek dink dat dit onnodig is om ’n volle nag in ’n noodeenheid te wag vir hulp en dan word jy nie gehelp nie. Ek wil graag weet hoekom daar so ’n vertraagde proses is

om ’n dokter te sien en hoekom daar nie meer dokters oor naweke aan diens kan wees nie. Paarl Ongevalle, julle steek die pragtige nuwe hospitaal in die skande. Teleurgestelde pasiënt Ethne Julius, spokesperson for the department of health, responds: Patient Robert Lewis arrived at Paarl Hospital on Sunday 7 August at 03:50 and was not considered in an emergency condition. He was therefore asked to wait in the waiting room. Paarl Hospital’s Emergency Unit was inundated with patients as the hospital is the only 24hour public health facility in Paarl. There is a dramatic increase in patient numbers over weekends. Lewis was seen to by a Medical Doctor at 08:30, who referred him to a Community Health Centre. Doctors in the Emergency Unit at tended to 131 patients on this parti cular Sunday of whom 38% requi red intensive medical treatment. Paarl Hospital is aware that more doctors are needed in the Emergency Unit over weekends; unfortunately the Department does not currently have enough medical doctors availa ble.

BURN. A 15-year old learner of Langubuya Primary School died in a fire early on Sunday morning. The fire broke out at 03:00 in a wooden structure against a house in Mafila Street, Mbekweni. Here Asenathi Vessel and his older brother, Luyolo, slept. Luyolo was awakened by the flames, but could not see his brother, and fled to safety. Residents enforce street justice in Mbekweni

‘Policemen’ rob delivery vehicle SUSPECTS possibly posing as policemen robbed a delivery vehicle in Du Toit’s Kloof shortly after midnight on Saturday. The driver of the Hyundai truck was transporting a consignment of cigarettes on Du Toit’s Kloof Pass in the direction of Paarl, when he was allegedly pulled over by a white Ford Focus with blue lights flashing on its roof. Two men, wearing bullet-proof vests, ordered the occupants of the truck out at gunpoint. A minibus taxi with five men inside then stopped at the scene and the two victims were forced into it. The minibus drove off in the direction of Worcester and dropped the two men at the weighbridge near Rawsonville, robbing them also of their cellphones and cash. The Hyundai truck was found deserted on Sunday near Kraaifontein, but the trailer with its consignment was missing. Cigarettes to the value of R3,9 million have been stolen. No one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident.

Ystervark in Hoofstraat laat stapmaats draf

Net voor die Polisiekollege het Wynand gesien hoe ’n ystervark vanuit die Hoofstraat stap tot in die tuin van die Polisiekollege. Die veiligheidswag by die Polisiekollege het hom buite weste geskrik vir die “vreemde” gedierte. Die ystervark het stukkende merke langs sy bek gehad en Wynand het besluit dat dit die beste sal wees om die ystervark terug te probeer kry in die berg. Heel versigtig het hy daarin geslaag om hom terug te “begelei” oor die Hoofstraat en op in Malanstraat met die hulp van sy stapmaats. Die ystervark het sy eie roete gekies en sy begeleiers moes soms vinnig draf om by te bly en te keer dat hy in tuine ingaan. In Kruisstraat het hy egter ’n lang ruk in ’n tuin gaan vassteek en dit het nogal ’n tyd gevat om hom weer daar weg te kry. Uiteindelik is die optog op in Bothastraat, dwars in Napierstraat en by van der Poelsdoordrift op tot in die berg. “Die episode het langer as ’n halfuur geduur, maar uiteindelik was hy veilig waar hy hoort in Paarlberg,” vertel Van Broekhuizen.

Join your fire protection association A CHALLENGING fire season lies ahead after the low winter rainfall and the SA Weather Services are predicting a hot dry summer this year that could result in numerous runaway fires. Landowners are urged to join their local fire protection associations (FPA), not only to help combat fires in rural areas, but for their own benefit in case of a fire. Larger insurance companies have started to reject veldfire damage claims in cases where there is a FPA in the area and the claiming landowner is not a member. Landowners who are not members of an FPA will also be presumed guilty if a veld fire starts or spreads from their property and they could end up having to pay for all firefightingcosts,aswellasanydamagesoftheir neighbours. Advantages of FPA membership are a decreased risk of veldfires and assistance in fighting them; no presumption of negligence in civil claims; cost saving through sharing of services, and insurance against costs of firefighting; assistance from the Minister, Government Institutions and other schemes, eg work incentive teams supplied to clear aliens; and provision for relief from certain prevention measures, such as fire breaks. The Paardeberg Fire Protection Association is to shortly incorporate 165 000 ha of the Berg River valley, extending from Riebeek West to Franschhoek, between the Limiet Mountains and Philadelphia (including the whole of Drakenstein, Klapmuts, Simondium and Franschhoek. This will assist the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in their longterm goal of having “back-to-back” FPAs, and will adjoin the West Coast FPA and GreaterCederbergFPA,theStellenboschFPAand the Cape Peninsula FPA. The Paardeberg FPA will hold its Annual GeneralMeetingonWednesday9November, starting with snacks and wine at 18:00 at David Frost Wine Estate, Voor Paardeberg, Paarl. There will be stalls demonstrating equipment and talks on the implications of the Veld and Forest Fire Act for Landowners, with options for extension of insurance cover, including aerial support for wildfires. Bekende oorlede ‘n BEKENDE Paarliet, oud-onderwyser Alwyn Boezak (83), is onlangs oorlede ná ’n kort siekbed weens kanker. Boezak, wat onder meer onderwyser was op Carnarvon (sy tuisdorp), in die Bovlei en Simondium, was besonder musikaal en was alombekend as koorleier. Hy het self ’n goeie sangstem gehad en was ook lief daarvoor om sy eie liedjies te komponeer. Hy het onder meer verskeie skole se skoolliedere geskryf. Boezak was bekend as ’n streng onderwyser, maar iemand wat omgegee het vir sy medemens en wat baie jongmense gemotiveer het om hul skoolloopbane te voltooi of hul musiektalent te ontwikkel. Hy laat sy vrou, Elizabeth, twee seuns, twee dogters en elf kleinkinders agter. Een van sy seuns, André is die VGK-leraar ds André Boezak van Oudtshoorn.

Donations go a long way THE elders at the Methodist Church in Mbekweni thank Paarl Post readers for donating knitting wool, needles, material and embroidery to them. It has “changed the world” for the 50 pensioners who gather every Tuesday and Thursday. CAPE WINELANDS DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY CALL FOR TOURISM EVENT PROPOSALS The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) is awaiting Tourism Event proposals from Tourism Event Organisers, Local Tourism Authorities (LTA’s) and Community Based Tourism Organisations that will partner with the CWDM in: • Promoting Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) and Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMME) participation in the economy • Increasing the number of visitors to the Cape Winelands District • Increasing the duration of stay in our district • Addressing seasonality in tourism issues of poverty and social development. The CWDM aims to provide limited funding within the district to promote and assist Tourism Events in order to establish and or grow their tourism business. Applicants must align their proposed events to the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s marketing themes that include: • Adventure Tourism • Health and Wellness • Go Green • Food and Wine • History, Arts and Culture • Conferencing • Romantic Travel. Applications will be considered for evaluation by an Evaluation committee of the CWDM. All applicants will be informed of the outcome of this process by not later than 30 June 2012. THE final event in the 2011 Boland Road Running League will be taking place this Saturday (5 November) at the sports field in Pniel and forms part of the Dwars River Road Races. The half-marathon will start at 07:00 and the 10 km road race will start at 07:15. With only the final event on the road running league remaining, it is clear that Hillroy Slingers from Worcester AC wil successfully defend his title in the half-marathon (men’s category) which he won in 2010. TWO Paarl paddlers, Giel van Deventer and Herbert Conradie, as well as their team members took podium positions in their categories in the Fish River Canoe marathon that took place in the Eastern Cape. This year this marathon doubled as the South African national K2 river championships. More than 1700 competitors, including several international teams, took part. As it was a national K2 championship, only the standard age categories were recognised. Prins, both from Paarl AC, are leading in this category with a narrow margin of points and their positions on Saturday will determine who the winner in this category will be. In the 10 km men’s category, William Kaptein from Robertson AC is leading the field on points and based on the current points Magrietha Smit (women’s category) from Ceres AC will successfully defend her title which she won in 2010. In the team categories, Ceres AC is currently the Boland champion, but is challenged by Fit2Run AC. The winner in this category will be determined on Saturday.

LANGASEMS. Vier Paarliete was deel van tientalle langasems wat Saterdag die Buffet Olives wedlope buite die Paarl aangepak het. Van links is Charlene Vernooy, Rosan van Wyngaard, Wesley Jacobs en Remo Williams.

MEDALJES. Franco van Niekerk van die Vineyard-swemklub het die afgelope naweek by die UWC 100 Challenge ’n goue medalje losgeswem in die 800 m vryslag vir seuns 11-13 jaar. Anniec Marais het ’n bronsmedalje verower in die 100 m borsslag vir meisies ouer as 16.

Sportdagboek ONOORWONNE. Die o.16-rugbyspan van Boishaai, wat die Burgemeesterstrofee van 2011 vir o.16 spanne verower het, is hier saam met hulle afrigters, Willie Nel, Theuns van Schoor en Torries van Niekerk, sowel as die burgemeester van Drakenstein, adv. Gesie van Deventer (regs), en enkele ampsdraers van die Drakenstein Munisipaliteit. Boishaai, wat onoorwonne was in dié kompetisie, het ook die grootste driedrukker, Ferlin Vers, en die speler van die toernooi, Fernando Kermis, opgelewer.

VAAR GOED. Dawie van der Walt (28) oudleerder van Paarl Gimnasium en oudlid van die Paarl Gholfklub, wat vier jaar gelede professioneel begin gholf speel het, se gholf is deesdae vuurwarm. Hy het verlede week in die BMG-toernooi in die uitspeelstryd verloor en speel hierdie naweek in nog ’n Sunshine-toer toernooi. Dawie woon tans in Houston in die VSA en speel daar in die Nationwide-toer om vir die Amerikaanse PGA-toernooi te kwalifiseer. PAARLIET ’N WENNER. Petrus Malherbe het die afgelope Sondag die Buffet Olives-bergfietswedren oor 50 km buite die Paarl gewen. Dominic Calitz en Christiaan Kriek was onderskeidelik tweede en derde. Malherbe het sy ervaring en kennis van die roete tot sy voordeel gebruik en het seker gemaak dat hy met die laaste paar draaie voor Dominic oor die wenstreep was. Die Paarliete het hul opponente uitgeboul vir 163 lopies, maar goeie veldwerk en boulwerk was nie genoeg nie, want ’n tekort aan groot vennootskappe was hulle ondergang. Vir die Tiere het L Julies (3/32), L Jacobs (3/19) en E Jacobs (2/34) uitgestaan met die bal. Die spelers wat uitgeblink het met die kolf was W October (44) en L Julies (25 n.u.n). Peoples se tweedes het hulle wedstryd teen Bergrivier gemaklik gewen toe hulle die Wellingtonners vir net 64 lopies uitgeboul het. Die beste boulers was A Williams (2/13), D Hendricks (2/9) en J Alexander (2/11). Die Tiere het dié telling in die 12de beurt verbygesteek met B Gabriels op 18 n.u.n en B Mitchell op 15 n.u.n. Peoples se derdes het vasgeval teen Paarl-Oos. Die Tiere moes 228 jaag en is uitgeboul vir 108. Peoples se beste boulers was M Carolissen (3/30) en beste kolwer was H Ontong (32 n.u.n). Vir Paarl-Oos het Earl Collings (30 5x4), Curtley Davids (40 4x4), R. Allies (44 4x4 2x6), Preston Abrahams (25 2x4) en Justin Watts (25 (2x4) die wilgerlat behoorlik geswaai. Curtley Davids (10-1-26-3) en Justin Watts (9-1-35-4) het Peoples se kolwers laat bontstaan. Saterdag speel die eerste span weg teen Paarl, die tweedes teen Paarl-Oos (weg) en die derdes teen Bergrivier. Die klub se bekeruitdeling vind plaas op 12 November by die klubhuis. Net Yusri Abrahim (27) en Darren Isaacs (22) kon ’n bietjie weerstand bied teen goeie boulwerk van JC Goosen (6-1-13-3), JC Hagen (7-0-33-3) en Johan du Plessis (4.4-1-12-2) en word almal uitgeboul vir ’n skamele 95 lopies. Bergrivier II speel Saterdag tuis teen Young Peoples III. Paarl-Oos wen op drafstap Paarl-Oos het Saterdag op ’n drafstap met Worcester United klaargespeel. Die Paarliete het 242/8 opgestapel met goeie vertoning deur Elroy Abrahams (90 6x4 1x6), Waylin September (78 6x4 1x6) en Bruce Miller (25 4x4). Met goeie boulwerk deur Petrus Japtha (6.2-124-4) en Jade Adams (6-2-12-2) is Worcester gougou uitgeboul en die Paarliete het gemaklik met 171 lopies gewen. In die wedstryd tussen Paarl-Oos IIA teen Vredenburg/Saldanha II is die Weskussers vir 155 uitgeboul. Die Paarliete het dié totaal met nog vier paaltjies staande verbygesteek. Werner Erasmus (25 3x6 1x4), Rodger Cupido (53 5x4 1x6), Wilton van Neul (25 2x4 1x6) en Wade Schoor (25 2x4) het goed met die kolf vertoon. Urchil Duminy (10-060-5) en Llewellyn Sedgwick (10-0-41-4) het die beste met die bal vertoon.

TRAMPOLIEN. Trampolien-gimnaste van Wynland Gimnastiekklub het tydens die SA kampioenskappe 17 medaljes verower. Hulle was deel van die Boland-span wat teen nege ander provinsies deelgeneem het. Boland het koning gekraai en die meeste Suid-Afrikaanse kampioene opgelewer. Vyf van dié kampioene, asook 10 ander medaljewenners is lede van die Wynland Gimnastiekklub. Agter van links is Monique Lamprecht (brons Black Top), Larissa Burger (silwer Black top en mini-trampolien), Eugenie Lamprecht (goud mini-tramp en black top) en Eliana Burger (brons black top). Gimmies baas in interskole

DIE atlete van Hoërskool Gimnasium het verlede Donderdag tydens die jaarlikse interskole-atletiekbyeenkoms voortgebou op die welslae van die Bredasdorp Top 10-byeenkoms twee weke gelede toe hulle behoorlik stof in die oë van die ander Paarlse skole geskop het. Aan die einde van die byeenkoms het Gimnasium 32 eerste plekke, 31 tweede plekke en 21 derde plekke behaal. Hulle het ook 8 van die 10 bekers wat op die spel was, verower. Vanjaar het Gimnasium 135 atlete vir dié byeenkoms ingeskryf. Dit was die elfde keer dat dat dié byeenkoms tussen HJS, Boland Landbou, HMS en La Rochelle plaasgevind het. Drie seunspanne en drie meisiespanne het aan dié byeenkoms deelgeneem. Gimnasium het ook 4 van die 6 ouderdomsbekers gewen. Dit sluit die dogters o.14, o.15 en seuns o.15 en o.17 bekers in. Nielke Matthee het die beker vir die beste meisiesprestasie met haar rekordafstand in die diskusgooi van 35,84m (932 ASA-punte) ve-

rower. Jan-Louw Kotze het die beker vir die beste seunsprestasie met ‘n yslike rekordafstand in die diskusgooi van 62,19 m (1005 ASApunte) gewen. Paarl Gimnasium met 310 punte in die meisieskompetisie verower gevolg deur Hoer Meisieskool met 242 punte en La Rochelle met 214 punte. In die seunskompetisie was dit ’n kwaai stryd, maar uiteindelik het Gimnasium (307) se seunspan die kompetisie met 5 punte voor Boishaai (302) weggeraap. Boland Landbou was derde met 225 punte. ) Op 22 Oktober het twee Gimnasiumspanne aan die Bredasdorp Top-10-atletiekbyeenkoms deelgeneem met die eerste span wat skoonskip gemaak het. Hulle het 9159 punte aangeteken met Outeniqua in die tweede plek met 8904 punte. Elke span het uit 10 atlete bestaan met die 10 beste prestasies wat tel. Met dié 10 prestasies het dié span met 17 medaljes weggeloop. Dit het 13 goue-, 3 silwer- en 1 bronsmedalje ingesluit. In

die proses het die Paarlse atlete ook 5 rekords verbeter. Die eerste span se uitslae is soos volg: Nielke Matthee GS D.o.15 bronsmedalje. Silwer medaljes - Helene Swanepoel 200 m D.o.15, Frederik Louw 300 mH S.o.15 en Keenan Abrahams 300 mH S.o.14, Goue medaljes - Marina Swanepoel 400 mH en 100 mH D.o.17, Gustav Marais SG S.o.14, Dylon Fairbridge 110 mH S.o.17, Frederik Louw 100 mH S.o.15, Leon Laubser SG S.o.15, Nielke Matthee DG D.o.15 34,99 m (rekord), Helene Swanepoel 300 mH D.o.15 44,60s (rekord), Keenan Abrahams 100 m en 100 mH S.o.14 13,0s (rekord), Jan-Louw Kotze GS en DG S.o.17 61,39 m rekord en Ami Claasen HS D.o.14 1,59 m (rekord). Keenan Abrahams het die beste prestasie vir ’n o.14seun in die 100 mH (993 punte) gelewer en daarmee die prys vir die beste prestasie van die byeenkoms ontvang. Die tweede span het sewende uit 17 spanne gekom en in totaal 10 medaljes verower.

BEKERWENNERS. Die bekerwenners van Hoërskool Gimnasium is voor van links Suzaan Broodryk en Jan-Louw Kotzé. In die middel is Ami Claasen, Marina Swanepoel, Willem Martinson en Frederik Louw. Agter is Nielke Matthee, Keenan Abrahams.

REKORD. Ruan Brits van Boishaai wen die o.15-gewigstoot met ’n rekordafstand van 17,75 m. Hy het die rekord met 26 cm verbeter.

BLITSIG. Helene Swanepoel, o.15-meisiesatleet van Hoërskool Gimnasium, skop stof in die oë van ander deelnemers in die naellope.
