LISE BEYERS The Paarl Waterfront development has come to a grinding halt after the Western Cape High Court granted an interdict in favour of the applicants who objected to certain irregularities pertaining to the tender.

A storm has been brewing over the proposed waterfront development on the banks of the Berg River in Paarl for a number of years.

The Drakenstein Heritage Foundation (DHF) and other concerned business owners served High Court papers on the Drakenstein Municipality, the Western Cape Government, the waterfront’s developers and other involved parties last year, to stop this development.

The development was planned in 2007 when Paarl had hoped to be chosen as a 2010 World Cup base camp.

Initial plans, which were approved very quickly by the Drakenstein Municipality, made provision for

Die beeste wat onlangs langs die oewers van die Bergrivier in die hartjie van die Paarl gewei het, is miskien nie ’n slegte ding nie. Dalk kan ’n mens juis die oewers in ’n gemeenskaplike plaas omskep, nie net vir vee nie, maar ook om groente te kweek. Dis hoog tyd dat daar ’n kultuur geskep word waar mense leer om vir hulself te sorg, in plaas daarvan dat hulle bakhand staan. ) The shopping frenzy of the festive season has started. Twee kleuters, Gadieja Muller (2) en Keyshia-Lee Diedericks (3) het Vrydagaand tragies gesterf toe beide dogtertjies in ’n nabygeleë plaasdam verdrink het.

Gadieja en Keyshia-Lee was beste maats en hul het soos elke ander dag tussen werkershuise gespeel. ’n Getraumatiseerde Hennie en Susanna (grootouers) van Keyshia-Lee sê: “Alles voel nog so onwerklik. Ons het haar soos ons eie kind grootgemaak en sy was haar oupa en ouma se oogappel.”

Keyshia-Lee se tannie, Babes Smit, vertel hoe hartseer die gesin is.

Residents attack police DEVIDEAN MOSES Several police officers were pelted with bricks and stones during a routine police operation in PaarlEast last Friday.

Members of the Paarl-East Police were conducting a joint crime prevention operation with the Technical Response Team (TRT) in the Chester Williams informal settlement in Amstelhof, and Pointsettia Street in Klein Nederburg when the incident took place.

Theyreceivedinformationfrom the public which led them to the homes of two alleged drug dealers.

Residents started pelting the police with stones as they tried to arrest the alleged drug-dealer at his home in Chester Williams.

When police arrived in Poinsettia Street, they were also attacked by members of the public. In both cases the police were forced to fire rubber bullets and stun grenades at the crowd.

A spokesperson for the PaarlEast Police Station, said the police

had valid search warrants to search the premises and to make arrests.

“During the mayhem, one of the officers had a narrow escape when a member of the community threw a stone at the police vehicle’s windscreen. Fortunately, the stone just bounced against the windscreen and the officer drove away.”

No one was injured, but several police vehicles were damage.

The police warned the community that anyone who is found guilty of misconduct during an official police operation will be arrested for public violence.

“The police will not stop doing such operations. The public must stand up and help us to fight crime.”

Two suspects arrested during the operation for the illegal possession of drugs, appeared on Monday 1 December in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court.

Volgens die munisipale bestuurder van Drakenstein, Johann Mettler, behoort die beeste aan ’n aangrensende plaas. Die beeste het glo uit ’n kraal gebreek en ingewandel deur ’n heining wat vroeër tussen die plaas en die Arboretum afgesteel is. “Daar is reeds met die betrokke eienaar gepraat en die situasie is uitgeklaar. ‘n Kennisgewing is aan die eienaar uitgereik. Hy het die versekering gegee dat sy veewagter ’n beter ogie sal hou oor die diere.” Die heining is ook in die proses om weer opgerig te word. Mettler het gesê vee mag nie in die Arboretum of dié deel van die rivieroewer wei nie.

Clean bill of financial health for Drakenstein For the 2013/2014 financial year, the Drakenstein Municipality has received a clean audit from the Auditor-General.

According to the mayor, Gesie van Deventer, this is the first time that Drakenstein Municipality has received a clean audit.

“This means clean financial statements, with no problems on predetermined objectives, no problems with non-compliance to key legislation or any significant deficiencies in internal control,” Van Deventer said.

She said since the establishment of Drakenstein Municipality in December 2000, the Municipality has received qualified and unqualified audit opinions on the annual financial statements.

She explained that since the 2007/2008 financial year, Drakenstein has received unqualified audit opinions on the annual financial statements with either material findings on the usefulness and reliability of reported performance information, or material misstatements in the annual financial statements that had to be corrected during the audit process, or material non-compliance to key legislation and internal control deficiencies that led to the aforementioned.

“With my election as mayor in 2011, my team and I set out to achieve the goal of a clean audit.”

She said that following the appointments of a new municipal manager, chief financial officer and executive managers since 2012,

the hard work began to address these internal control deficiencies and other areas of shortcoming.

“The highly capable newly appointed executive management team under the leadership of the municipal manager successfully implemented our strategy within two years, to turn this gigantic ship around and to obtain an unqualified audit opinion with no other matters for the 2013/2014 financial year, thus a clean audit, for the first time in Drakenstein’s existence.

“I am incredibly proud of the political and administrative leadership of the Municipality. It is a joy and privilege to announce that our financial records, procedures, processes and internal controls are at a level that in the opinion of the Auditor-General is clean.”

Van Deventer said that the public of Drakenstein can be assured that the current political leadership and the administration are responsibly managing their assets and are rendering services at acceptable levels.

“There is always room for improvement and we will endeavour to enhance the citizens’ quality of life through a clean administration. These audit results are a stepping stone to the vision and dream of Drakenstein as a Place of Excellence and serves as proof that my administration has put its money where its mouth is. We will continue to build on these results and make sure that our residents reap the benefits of a clean administration.”

The brakes on for learner drivers LISE BEYERS Many learner drivers will now have to seek an alternative place of practice, after authorities shut down the Dal Josaphat Test Centre to them.

For many years, learner drivers have been able to use this facility to practise their driving, especially various parking manoeuvers.

But last week the Department of Transport informed the local traffic department that no person should be allowed to practise in the yard at any time.

This is according to an instruction published in the Government Gazette in 2006.

Well-known local driving instructor, Christa Mostert, said that driving schools have never heard of this ‘law’ and this is the first time that they have been informed of it.

“We have always used the test centre for practise sessions for youngsters. It is especially handy to teach children how to park.

We simply cannot do these manoeuvers in, for example, Lady Grey Street. There is nowhere else to practise safely.”

Mostert said that they have in the past asked the municipality to identify a premises for driving schools where they can teach learner drivers, but to no avail.

“There are so many youngsters who are going to depend on their own transportation next year, when they either start with their studies or with work.

“This arrangement is simply unfair and unnecessary.”

Mostert added that there has never been a negative incident at the test centre regarding a learner driver.

Drakenstein municipal manager, Johann Mettler, said that the decision is not that of the municipality.

“This is a directive from the National Department of Transport to which we must adhere. This does not only affect local learners, but the entire country.

“The guidelines from the national department stipulate that test areas must be used to test a candidate and that should not be used as a training course. Driving instructors will thus have to train students on normal roads to pass the required tests.”

Twee voetgangers is in twee afsonderlike voorvalle op die N1 dood.

Louise du Plessis, sê op Sondag 30 November omstreeks 12:00 is ’n vrou op die N1 naby die tolhek raakgery toe sy die pad wou oorsteek. Sy het ernstige beserings opgedoen en is aanvanklik na Paarl-hospitaal geneem maar later na Tygerberg-hospitaal oorgeplaas waar sy Maandag aan haar beserings beswyk het. Die bestuurder van die voertuig het nie beserings opgedoen nie. Die identiteit van die vrou is onbekend.

Saterdagaand is ’n 24-jarige man, omstreeks 20:00 ook op die N1 naby die Jan van Riebeeck/R301-afrit doodgery. Die oorledene het op ’n nabye plaas gewoon. Die bestuurder van die motor is nie beseer nie.

Klagtes van strafbare manslag word in albei gevalle ondersoek.

Nog twee voetgangers is Vrydagmiddag kort ná mekaar raakgery. ’n Bejaarde vrou (74) is voor 11:00 in Nuwestraat, voor Paarl Post se kantoor, deur ’n afleweringsvoertuig raakgery. Sy moes vir ’n kopbesering behandel word nadat sy geval en vermoedelik haar kop teen die teerpad gekap het. Sowat ’n uur later is ’n 35-jarige vrou in Lady Greystraat raakgery.

Sy het ’n besering aan haar linkerbobeen opgedoen.

In nog ’n enkel-voertuigbotsing Saterdagoggend het die bestuurder van ’n motor omstreeks 01:15 teen ’n muur van die Hugenote-tonnel gebots. Die bestuurder, ’n 33-jarige man, het ’n sny aan die kop gehad terwyl sy passasier, ’n 19-jarige vrou, vir

Volgens ’n verklaring van die WesKaapse departement van vervoer en openbare werke, is 22 padsterftes vir die naweek in die provinsie aangemeld. The Water Run - 22 November

Founded in 2013, Ford Novelsport Owners Club relooked the way car clubs reach out to communities and identified one key element that one can so easily miss. They discovered that although their efforts in handing out soup and bread is good, people really have a bigger need for a more basic essential - fresh drinking water.

The Water Run's mission statement is to essentially bring a relief to people in need by providing them with the basic essentials such as water and food; raising awareness about the scarcity of fresh drinking water and the importance of preserving it.

For the 2014 Water Run Valcare Trust has identified Block 1, Klipbok Street, Paarl. This small community of 200 people especially stood out because they didn't have toilet facilities and only one tap supplying water to everyone in the community for cleansing purposes, cooking, washing and every other basic requirement for water.

On 22 November 2014 Novelsport Owners Club's journey began at 9am when they convoyed to Paarl from Cape Town. They setup their vehicles not only to give a bit of a show to the children of Chicago but as food stands where people could come collect what they were able to provide.

There were a Soup Mix stand (sponsored by Monte Christo Miqlat) where people could get two packets of soup mix suitable to feed about 100x people at a time.

They had their infamous water stand (sponsored by Oasis Water & DURR Bottling) where they gave each person 5 litres of water that they could take to their homes and use for drinking purposes. In addition to that there were huge containers with chilled water that served as a water fountain to immediately bring relieve on a 32 degree hot summers day.

Furthermore there were a fresh food stand where they handed out a van full of fresh fruit and vegetables (sponsored by BDH Logistics) and for the children, just to spoil them a bit, they had a sweet station (sponsored by Truda Snacks & Novel Motor Company) where each child was handed a lucky packet filled with chips and sweets. Tullow SA also made a financial contribution towards this event.

World Toilet Day - 19 November

Access to sanitation and proper ablution facilities is a global issue, with more than 2.5-billion people not having access to a clean toilet. According to a report prepared for World Toilet Day, 1.1-billion people have to defecate in the open due to lack of access to any ablution facilities.

In South Africa, diarrhoea is the greatest killer of children under five according to a report on global sanitation commissioned by the United Nations. To mark World Toilet Day, which were held on 19 November, Cape Town based NGO Breadline Africa in partnership with Valcare Trust opened a new container toilet at Inkwenkwezi Home Base Care centre in Mbekweni.

Until recently, the pre-school had only two open potties in an alleyway, to cater for the ablution needs of more than 60 children in their care, ranging from six months to five-years-old.

"One can only imagine the lack of dignity and the risk of illness for these little ones. Without the basics of hygiene, running water and proper ablution facilities, the children of Inkwenkwezi Home Base Care were at risk of picking up a number of diseases," Project Officer for Breadline Africa, Edna Titus said. "In light of this issue and Breadline Africa's focus on children, we provided the pre-school with hand basins, three toilets for the boys and three for the girls fitted into a reconverted shipping container," Titus said. "As part of World Toilet Day, we have been teaching the children how to use the flush toilets and most importantly why it is important to wash their hands regularly."

Through Valcare Trust, Rand Merchant Bank also became known with other needs that existed at the centre. They partnered in celebrating World Toilet Day and donated toddler tables and chairs, stackable beds and other necessities to the pre-school.

Gestremde parkering nou bekostigbaar LIEZL DAVIDS Tydens ’n onlangse munisipale raadsvergadering is goedkeuring gegee om die parkeerpermit-tariewe vir persone met gestremdhede te verlaag vanaf R288 tot R60.

Dié verlaging kom ná ’n klagte by die Drakenstein-munisipaliteit ingedien is oor die hoë tariewe wat persone met gestremdhede moet betaal wanneer hulle van die toegekende parkerings in die dorp wil gebruik maak. ’n Opname is deur die munisipaliteit gedoen waar die tarief vir ’n parkeerpermit in Drakenstein vergelyk is met dié van verskeie omliggende munisipaliteite. Daar is gevind dat Drakenstein-munisipaliteit die hoogste tarief het. ’n Permit in Kaapstad kos R80 (geldig vir twee jaar), R60 in Stellenbosch (onbepaalde tyd), R110 in Overstrand (onbepaalde tyd), R35 in Mosselbaai (per jaar), R30 in Knysna (per jaar) en Worcester, Malmesbury en George se permitte is gratis.

Volgens die burgemeester, Gesie van Deventer, is die stap egter net die begin om een deel van ’n probleem aan te spreek.

“Die munisipaliteit kry gereeld klagtes van mense sonder gestremdhede, wat op hierdie parkerings stop, wat spesifiek toegeken word aan persone met fisieke gestremdhede. Ek wil hierdie skuldiges maan dat die munisipaliteit

se wetstoepassing en verkeerspolisie aktief hierdie parkerings monitor. Sou ’n lid van die publiek betrap word op ’n gestremde parkering, sonder ’n wettige permit, sal jy ’n allemintige boete van R800 ontvang. Hierdie parkerings word met ’n doel gereserveer en dit is uiters onbedagsaam om hierdie parkerings met opset te beset.”

Levona Solomon van Arise and Shine, ’n organisasie wat hulle bemoei met persone met gestremdhede, verwelkom die prysverlaging.

“Ons is regtig verheug dat dit meer bekostigbaar is. Die prys was juis die rede hoekom baie mense nie ’n permit kon kry nie,” het Solomon gesê.

Volgens Solomon is die toeganklikheid om ’n permit te bekom ook nou beter, omdat waar persone met gestremdhede eers ’n doktersverslag moes indien, dit nou nie meer nodig is nie.

Die prysverlaging was ook net betyds om Internasionale Dag vir Persone met Gestremdhede, wat op 3 Desember gehou is, te vier.

Die doel van die dag was om bewustheid te kweek vir persone met gestremdhede, hulle behoeftes te verstaan en hul waardigheid en regte te bevorder.

Die nuwe tariewe is geldig vanaf 1 Julie 2014 en persone wat ná 1 Julie ’n nuwe permit uitgeneem het, se geld sal deur die munisipaliteit terugbetaal word.

LABIRINT BY DE POORT: Die Paarl-tuinbouklub het verlede week die nuut geboude labirint by De Poort in Suider-Paarl amptelik oorhandig. Die ontwerper van die labirint is Terry de Vries, wat ook gedurende die oorhandiging as spreker opgetree het. Volgens De Vries kan dit beskou word as ’n veilige en heilige ruimte wat jy betree. Die labirint bied ook die geleentheid om rustig te loop en ontslae te raak van enige swaarkry in die lewe. Die labirint is oop vir almal om te gebruik en is nie geloofsgebonde nie. Hier knip Cecile Joubert (regs) van die tuinbouklub die lint saam met De Poort se bestuurder, Johann Burger.

This is no way to fight crime A senseless murder, most probably due to excessive alcohol consumption, led to the death of another young man last weekend.

At the same time, one reads of police who were attacked in two separate incidents while they were trying to tackle drug smugglers and the illegal sale of alcohol, not too far from where the very murder had taken place.

The police were attacked so ferociously by members of the community that they had to fire rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

And this is by no means the first time that the police have been attacked while trying to enforce the law.

Earlier this year two police officers landed in hospital after they, too, where pelted with rocks by community members in similar incidents.

The irony of it is that all too often the public complains about the scourge of drugs and alcohol in their areas. They then ask: “Why are the police not acting on this”?

But when they do, they are literally putting their lives in danger.

We must also beware of a “cry wolf” situation.

The broad community, who is truly against the destruction of lives due to drug and alcohol abuse, should equally condemn such unruly behaviour by members of the community, and assist the police in shutting down these illegal establishments.

Hoekom maak die gimnasium jou bang?

Vir die meeste van ons is die plaaslike gimnasium nie juis ’n gunsteling-plek om te besoek nie.

Veral as daar in ag geneem word dat elkeen van ons smag na daardie perfekte somerlyf. Ons moet hiervoor die media bedank vir hul oppervlakkigheid en die konstante druk om soos die volgende Hollywood-ster te lyk.

Ek weet die winter is nou reeds iets van die verlede, maar party van ons klou langer vas aan die winter-vetjies.

Nou die rede vir hierdie lang inleiding is om aan die nie-gimnasium-gangers te verduidelik hoekom selfs die poging om by een aan te sluit jou dalk net sal help vorentoe.

Kom ons begin by die begin. Jou kleredrag vir hierdie uitstappie na ’n gesonder jy is belangrik. Moet nou nie met jou gr. 10 netbal tekkies en ’n ou atletiek-broek die gimnasium binnestorm nie. Daardie faded kinderkrans t-hemp is beslis ’n no-go. Trek gemaklike oefenklere aan en vermy deurskynende goedjies.

As jy weet wat goed is vir jou, man of vrou - pasop vir die gewigoptel-afdeling. Hierdie is beslis nie ’n eerste stop vir die kranige amateur by die gimnasium nie. Hier kry jy baie interessante spesies.

Party groot, party klein en dan party wat glo hulle is groot. Dit geld ook vir beide geslagte. Hier sal jy meer as normaal die harde gekreun vanuit ‘gymmers’ se monde hoor. Moet nie bang wees nie, dit is slegs ’n teken van hul brute krag terwyl hul sonder ’n glimlag vir die laaste keer hul 12 kg gewig tot by die elmboog buig.

Moet jou nie bekommer nie, daar is ander gedeeltes in die gimnasium wat jy ook kan probeer.

Nog een van my gunsteling-areas is die ateljee. Hier moet jy eers vir ’n tydjie van buite af loer voor jy jouself oorhaal vir deelname.

Binne hierdie glasmure is waar jy ook gou besef hoe moeilik dit is om jou lagspiere te beheer. Deelnemers aan hierdie dansklasse het oor die algemeen die ritme van ’n Russiese-sirkusleier na ’n paar sopies wodka. Daar word verskillende tipes dans en aërobiese klasse aangebied en jy betaal geen ekstra geld om dit by te woon nie.

Nietemin is hierdie ’n heerlike plek om nuwe vriende te maak en

ook die gimnasium beter te leer ken.

Nou beweeg ons na die opwarmarea. Hierdie word deur alle gimnasium-gangers voor of na hul sessie gebruik. Mense strek, rol, knak en buig hier tot in die vreemdste vorms. Alles met die hoop dat hul môre sonder ongemak uit hul bed kan opstaan. As dit lyk of iemand homself soos ’n koeksister geknoop het, moenie stres, hul keer weer terug na normaal.

My persoonlike gunsteling-plek om uit te hang is spinning klas.

Hierdie is gewoonlik tussen 3045 minute lank en die resep is eenvoudig: lekker musiek, lekker sweet en lekker mense. Negentig persent van die mense wat hierdie klasse bywoon sien dit as goeie oefening om daai vetjies te verbrand asook ’n kans om fiets te ry. Meeste het dit as kind laas gedoen en die vreugde op hul gesigte is besonders.

Jy kry ook altyd die een ou (ja hier bring ek geslag in) wat die spinning klas te ernstig opvat. Terwyl almal met hul kortbroeke en tekkies die klas bywoon is daar hierdie een man wat met sy volle fietsry-pakkie die klas bywoon.

Hy het sy fancy skoene, stywe spons-broek asook sy handskoene aan. Want, volgens hom ry hy buite rond in ’n kompetisie waarby hy wil goed lyk terwyl ander mense vir hom wegry. Ek wag vir die dag wat hierdie ou opdaag met sy valhelm op.

Laastens is die badkamer ’n vreesaanjaende plek. As jy net ’n bietjie skaam is, bly hier weg en sorg dat jy reg aangetrek by die gimnasium opdaag.

Vir die mans is dit chaos wanneer oud en jonk die storte gebruik. Handdoek om die nek paradeer hulle in hul geboortepak rond.

Dit is genoeg om jou eetlus en slaappatroon te versteur.

Van wat ek hoor is dit nie beter by die vroue-badkamer nie. Hier voel dit kompleet soos koshuis of terug by die huis as vroue mekaar se make-up, haardroërs en selfs spuitgoed gebruik.

Moet dus nie dat hierdie tong-indie-kies opmerkings jou finaal wegstoot nie.

Neem die eerste stap en sluit aan.

Onthou dat almal daar binne ook begin het waar jy nou staan.

Only police could stop the parties I would publicly like to say thank you to WO Pierre Hugo of Wellington SAPS. On Wednesday 19 November my neighbour hired out his facility to some institution to hold their Christmas party. As the day progressed and the liquor bottles emptied, the crowd and music got louder and louder. I tried contacting municipal officials but to no avail.

As a last resort I contacted Hugo and within an hour the music stopped and the cars left (I estimate about 50 cars).

On Saturday and Sunday (22 and 23 November) my neighbour also rents out his property to picnickers who are very rowdy. I contacted Henk Strydom from the municipality who gave me the number of Mr

Syster, who is responsible for such issues. He said that I must contact them with problems, as this property owner is operating his premises illegally.

On Friday 29 November, my neighbour again had a big crowd on his property. I called Strydom’s office again and he promised to send

someone out to investigate.

But later when I again enquired, I was told that someone did go and took a look, but they reported back that there was no evidence of a party.

I then phoned the mayor’s office and was told by her very friendly secretary that they will look into the matter.

Soon after this I received a call fromMrAdamswhotoldmeto“stop making waves and join the party”.

I again turned to Hugo, and low and behold, within an hour, the noise stopped.

I would also like to thank the helpful municipal officials, and those unhelpful ones. Shame on you.

I would like to thank the people who assisted in catching a man who broke into my house and for retrieving goods that where stolen from me.

I see that Joy wrote a letter to Paarl Post last week explaining what happened, but she went on to say that they received no thanks.

I was however not at the scene and have been trying to get these do-gooders’ contact details from the police to personally thank them, but to no avail.

Thank you to farmer for acts of generosity We recently had to close one of our congregations on the farm Blijdschap, near Wellington, due to the farm being taken over by new owners.

The last service was held on Sunday 16 November.

The previous owner, Mr P Orphen, has shown tremendous generosity to the members of our church, of whom some lived on his farm and

the surrounding farms, as well as a few people who lived on the farm, but who were not in his employ.

He accommodated them on his farm for over 20 years, and made a house available for church services to be held in.

He made R1 million rand available for a housing project for those who lived on the farm, whether in his employ or not.

They received beautiful spacious three and two bedroomed houses and have subsequently taken occupation in the areas of Paarl and Wellington.

This has surely warmed the hearts of many and we want to publicly express our gratitude to him.

De Poort is beslis ’n besoek werd Ek het onlangs die Erfenis-museum by De Poort besoek en dit was ’n belewenis.

Dit huisves ’n uitstalling van ou perdekarre, waens en koetse wat in die ou dae in die Paarl vervaardig is.

Daar pryk honderde foto’s teen die muur met die geskiedenis van outydse vervoer. Met die koms van

motors het die bedryf tot niet gegaan.

My man was traag om te gaan – ek moes hom aan sy hare sleep.

Maar toe moes ek hom weer aan sy hare uitsleep om hom daar uit te kry.

Gelukkig is daar ’n oulike kafeetjie waar ons heerlike koffie, tee en versnaperings kon geniet.

Die bestuurder, Johan Burger, sê hy is elke Dinsdag vanaf 09:00 tot 15:00 daar om besoekers te ontvang.

Hulle sluit middel Desember en open weer in Januarie 2015. Dis beslis ’n besoek werd en toegang is net R10.

Wykskomiteelid en kranige sportman sterf ’n Wykskomiteelid van Klapmuts is onverwags oorlede ná ’n hartaanval.

Anthony (Tony) Jacobs is Dinsdag 25 November op die ouderdom van 54 by sy huis oorlede.

Hy was bekend vir sy rol as wykskomiteelid in wyk 18 van Klapmuts en het die portefeulje sport in Stellenbosch se munisipale raad behartig.

Jacobs het sy matriek aan Paulus Joubert Sekondêr behaal en hom ná skool by sy pa se bouonderneming aangesluit. Sowat 18 jaar gelede het hy sy eie bouonderneming op die been gebring.

Spesifieke projekte waarby hy betrokke was, sluit in verskeie laekostebehuisingsprojekte soos die Klapmuts-behuisingsprojek, en projekte in Kayamandi, Kylemore en Klipheuwel.

Sy onderneming het ook die Klapmutssportgebou in 2004 suksesvol voltooi.

Op sportgebied was hy ’n kranige sportman wat rugby gespeel het vir die Unitedrugbyklub in Wemmershoek.

Gedurende 1998 help hy met die samesmelting van die klubs United en Blue Stars van Klapmuts om die klub, Blue Stars United, te vorm.

Hy was die eerste voorsitter van die saamgestelde klub en sedert 2006 die klub se president. Hy het ’n groot rol gespeel om dissipline by die klub te vestig.

Hy laat sy vrou, Mirinda, drie seuns en ’n dogter agter. Hy word Saterdag 6 Desember in die Volle Evangelie-kerk in Klapmuts begrawe.

VROUE TEEN GEWELD: Woman on Farms het Sondag 'n vreedsame optog in Franschhoek gehou waar hulle deur die dorp gestap het tot by die monument. Hier het hulle ’n griefskrif aan Franschhoek-polisie se stasiebevelvoerder, Kapt. Cynthia Miti, oorhandig waarin hulle kla oor mans wat hulle mishandel en die polisie wat hulle nie altyd help nie. Die klagtes was egter nie op Franschhoek-polisie gerig nie en daarom het Miti onderneem om die griefskrif na die betrokke stasiebevelvoerders te stuur.

Festival of Lights full of entertainment This year the Drakenstein Festival of Lights will take place in Paarl, Mbekweni, Saron and Gouda.

On Friday 5 December the festivities will make its way to Mbekweni in Poking Street where the Extreme Scorpions dance group, as well as Zolani Bongo, Korus and Fabian Smith, to name a few, will entertain the crowd.

On Saturday 6 December, Paarl can expect a full line-up, when Signe Pietersen, Karin-K and Dance Domain will entertain locals, along with Global Spotlight winner, Arno Arendse. Between 20:30 and 20:45, the Mayor, Gesie van Deventer, and Mr and Miss Drakenstein will make an appearance, whereafter the lights will be switched on.

Simply Smooth will feature as the guest artist and Afrikaans Ruk as the main artist.

Go-karts and other activities will keep the children busy.

On Friday 12 December, Tjiff and Tjaff will grace the locals of Saron with their presence.

Last year’s Saron’s Got Talent winner, Derrick Plaatjies, will perform as well as Kelly Fortuin.

On Saturday 13 December the Festival of Lights will come to a close in Gouda where the N&H Dance School will showcase their talents, supported by the Defenders Crew, BlackSuga, Soul Beats and Young Stars.

Here Clarence Carolissen congratulates Franklin Sitzer, the recipient of the Aibprof merit award.

This uttered by his grandmother, reverberated in the mind of Franklin Sitzer who, now at the age of 50, has completed his third year towards a Bachelor of Divinity at Stellenbosch University.

Besides receiving a bursary from the Athlone Institute, the board of directors unanimously voted him for the merit award.

Harwin Smith, an Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund (Aibprof), founder member and deputy chairperson, explains that for the past fifteen years the Athlone Institute Trust (AIT), through Aibprof have been awarding students with bursaries or bursary loans.

The AIT, a recipient of the prestigous Impumelelo Social Innovations Centre Award, has been in existence since 1926 through the collective effort of members from five churches, namely, Bethel United Congregational Church, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Immanuel UR Church, St Stephen’s Anglican Church and Zions U R Church.

Clarence Carolissen, the chairperson, confirmed that in 2014 R520 000 was issued as bursaries or bursary loans to 63 students studying at various tertiary institutions in South Africa.

Students in their second and subsequent years of study will be considered for bursaries based on academic merit and or financial need.

Awards are variable and cover a percentage of the cost of tuition, registration and books.

Aibprof bursaries are not repayable and the fees are paid directly to tertiary institutions.

In 2015, a maximum of 20 bursary loans will be made available to first year students with strong motivation for financial need, who have obtained the “Acceptance to do a Baccalareus course” matriculation exemption.

First year students who matriculated at Klein Nederburg Senior Secondary School, Paarl, who register for a qualification in AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University, may also apply for the Erna Witbooi Bursary.

Applicants must be permanent residents of Paarl or Mbekweni and be a parish member in good standing of one of the member churches of the AIT, or a member in good standing at a religious institution in Paarl or Mbekweni.

Application forms, more information and all the requirements for the bursaries and bursary loans are available from the Aibprof website, (www.athlonebursaries.co.za), at the offices of the member churches in Paarl, and from Drakenstein Pharmacy.

Tobacco giant’s vehicle robbed A delivery vehicle from British American Tobacco (BAT) was hijacked and robbed while making a delivery in Mbekweni last Wednesday.

Mbekweni Police spokesperson, Sergeant Nceba Vanqa, said on 26 November at around 09:00, the driver of a BAT delivery vehicle was busy off-loading stock at a tuck shop in Goniwe Street, when two armed men approached him and ordered him to climb into the back of the vehicle.

One demanded the keys to the vehicle and got into the driver’s seat, while the other suspect climbed in the back with the driver.

They then drove to an area where a white Toyota Quantum was waiting.

The suspects parked the delivery vehicle next to the Quantum and started offloading boxes containing cigarettes from the delivery vehicle into the Quantum. They instructed the BATdriver to help them.

Once they were finished, they ordered him to get into his vehicle after which they locked the doors and fled the scene with two cellular phones and the keys to the vehicle. No shots were fired. It is still uncertain how many boxes were stolen.

Police are investigating the matter.

No arrests have been made.

Like any business in South Africa, we take the threat of criminal misconduct very seriously and as such, we are constantly looking at ways to enhance the protection of our workforce. The safety of our employees is our priority.” She said at this point they cannot disclose any further information as to the incident or the stock stolen as the investigation is still ongoing.

A police vehicle from Paarl that was helping to search for the suspects involved in the hijacking, was on its way back to Paarl when it was involved in a collision at the intersection of Piet Retief Street, Wellington. The two constables were admitted to hospital but have since been released and declared fit for duty. * The theft of cigarettes has become ever increasing in South Africa as they are regarded as ‘quick cash’.

Stolen cigarettes are sold to especially home and spaza-shops, and it is almost impossible to trace stolen cigarettes.

HOKKIE: Verskeie hokkiespelers van die Laerskool Gimnasium is in PSI-binnenshuise hokkie-spanne opgeneem wat in Desember aan ’n toernooi in Kaapstad deelneem. Agter van links is Yani Winter, Kirsten Hofmeyr, Reuben van der Nest, Megan Venn en Chané van Zyl. Voor is Matthew Venn, Robyn Susie Luis en Christiaan Fourie.

Van links is Janco Marais, Bianca Steenkamp, Elizabeth Labuschagne, Rozanne Theron, Stiaan Klopper en Ernst van Rhyn.

Gimmies deel van Noord-Suid-projek Die uitruil-projek tussen ’n Noorweegse skool, Oslo Handelsgimnasium en Paarl Gimnasium, vier vanjaar hul vyftiende bestaansjaar. Dié jaar se tema was “volhoubaarheid” en “volhoubare ontwikkeling.” Daar is werksessies rondom die tema aangebied, navorsing is gedoen en projekte is van stapel gestuur.

Al Paarl Gimnasium se gr. 11leerders het die geleentheid gehad om aansoek te doen en ná vyf intensiewe rondes waarin hulle kennis en vaardighede wel deeglik getoets is, is ’n groep saamgestel: Ernst van Rhyn, Janco Marais, Stiaan Klopper, Bianca Steenkamp, Elizabeth Labuschagne en Rozanne Theron.

Sarah van der Merwe (projekbestuurder) en Nico Momsen (personeellid) het die groep bestuur en ver-

gesel.

Die Gimmies het die Nore vroeër vanjaar in die Paarl ontvang. Om die tema van die projek te ondersoek, het die groep die Koebergkernkragstasie, Spier met Treepreneurs en die Lynedoch Village asook Butterfly House Palliative Hospice besoek.

Die Suid-Afrikaners het met Tafelberg, die Paarl, Kaapstad en ander besienswaardighede in die WesKaap gespog.

Die Paarl Gimnasium-groep was in Oslo, Noorweë. Hulle het onder andere die Haraldrud herwinningsaanleg in Oslo, die Smola windplase en die Aura hidroëlektriese kragstasie naby Kristian-sund besoek.

Ander besienswaardighede wat besoek is, is die Nobel Vredesentrum, Vigelandpark en Holmenkollen Skihelling.

SILENCE IS GOLDEN: During a special ceremony held at Boland Park in Paarl, the karate fraternity of the Boland sympathised and mourned the death of various local heroes, thereby showing their belief in a peaceful and nonviolent country.

UITBLINKERS: Vincentia Johnson en John de Wee van die Hoërskool Labori is die 2014-Omnia-wenners. Dié toekenning is vir ’n matriekleerder met die grootste bydrae tot Labori se sport die afgelope vyf jaar. Hulle is ook die victrix en victor ludorum.

PRYSUITDELING: New Orleans Sekondêr het onlangs hul sportleiers aangewys by hul akademiese prysuitdeling. SEASON OF GIVING: Paarl Post held a donation drive with the help of the community for the past two months. The community donated several products and accessories for a crèche in Paarl-East and Mbekweni to use for their learners. Between the toddlers are Paarl Post staff members Liezl Davids (journalist) and Christoffel Beukman (advertising representative), principal of Kiddies Paradise nursery school, Elaine Adonis and her staff.

Paarl artist, James Dick, will be having an exhibition at Blaauwklippen Estate in Stellenbosch from Sunday 7 December.

James Dick’s understanding and life experience infuses his art with the forces of nature, sky, sea and the earth’s flora and fauna.

As a young man James was always outside observing his surroundings. After matriculating at Paarl Boys High, he graduated from Elsenburg College with degrees in agriculture, horticulture and oenology. While working in the Eastern Cape he taught local farm workers to play rugby and established a rugby league, while they in turn taught him

how to speak Xhosa.

James travelled the world extensively and then settled in Tucson, Arizona where he now lives with his wife Sarah and two sons James and Gordon.

Sarah, Yale educated in art history, finally put the palette knife in his hand. James is self-taught and expresses what comes naturally to him.

As an impressionist, his palette-knife strokes and colours are full of movement, deep and rich.

James uses the moment and moods and his expert knowledge of the subject to inspire his art.

Wellington Cricket Club edges out Paarl CC Wellington CC obtained their first victory of the season in their fourth round match against old rivals Paarl CC at the Pen Basson oval in Wellington.

On a sweltering day, home captain Tiaan Cloete won the toss and decided to bat on a pitch that looked excellent for batting but provided uneven bounce throughout the course of the match.

Openers Mohsin Khan (4 off 12 deliveries) and Rudi Andrews (16 off 53) made gradual progress against the experience of Hilroy Paulse (2 for 16 off 9) and the swing bowling of Kyle Solomon (3/22 off 8) until Khan succumbed and got trapped LBW by Solomon.

Thereafter, Paulse accounted for the wicket of Craig Abrahams and Cameron Engelbrecht took the wicket of Rudi Andrews.

This allowed Tiaan Cloete and Junaid Cassiem to enter the fray and the two set about in a very business-like manner by running

excellently between the wickets and hitting straight to accumulate boundaries.

Their partnership of 50 runs was obtained off 70 deliveries, indicating that although batting wasn’t easy, their exuberance allowed the batting side to put pressure on the visitors.

It was especially Cassiem who found the going easier and picked holes in the Paarl defence with the judicious use of his feet and smart stroke play on either side of the wicket.

He succumbed for 26 off 37 deliveries when he tried to slog sweep Godfrey Stevens against the turn of his orthodox left arm spin.

Tiaan Cloete (51 off 78) continued his good form with sharp running and obligingly punishing any loose delivery.

The lower order could not make any worthwhile contributions and the home side was dismissed in the 44th over for 152 runs.

James Tennent clinches prestigious cycle race James Tennent from team Giant Durbanville clinched the 8th Stellenbosch Cycle Tour title this on Sunday in superb weather conditions, finishing the 95 km route in just 02:15:25 and edging out second place Jos le Roux (Team Lights by Linea) by half a tyre width.

In a sprint finish, Le Roux held off stiff competition from Nolan Hoffman (team Abantu) who secured third place to complete the men’s elite podium at the 2014 race.
