VYFTIEN huisgesinne is Sondagmiddag dakloos gelaat nadat ’n woonstelgebou in Huguenot in ligte laaie opgegaan het. Die brand het omstreeks 16:00 uitgebreek in die dak van die Katz-woonstelle in Klein Drakensteinweg. Chaos het hierna geheers soos die brand vinnig deur die dak versprei het, op ’n tyd wat talle inwoners gerus het om van die hitte van die dag te ontsnap. ’n Inwoner, Mark Simonse, het gesê dat alles baie rustig was die middag, totdat hy rook geruik het. “Als het so vinnig gebeur. Ek het bure wakker geklop en het ’n deur stukkend geskop om ’n buurman na veiligheid te bring.” Shane Gardiner, wat daardie tyd verby die woonstelgebou gery het, het op daardie stadium ’n bietjie rook vanuit die dak sien borrel en het dadelik die brandweer gebel. Toe die brandweer binne enkele minute hierna op die toneel kom, was die brand in die dak van die woonstel buite beheer.
Drie woonstelle aan die voorkant van die gebou het ten volle uitgebrand. Verskeie inwoners het daarin geslaag om van hul goedere te red, maar vele ander het alles verloor. Een hiervan is ’n administratiewe beampte van die polisie, Amore September. “Ek het 11 jaar gelukkig hier gewoon, nou is alles verwoes.” Toe die brand onder beheer gebring is, moes brandweerbeamptes nog tot 22:00 die situasie monitor om te sorg dat die gebou nie weer vlam vat nie. Die operasionele hoof van Drakenstein brandweer, Dereck Peceur, het bevestig dat die brand in die dak van die gebou ontstaan het, maar hy het gesê dat slegs ’n forensiese ondersoek die presiese oorsaak van die brand sal kan vasstel. “Die brand het vinnig deur die dak versprei omdat daar geen brand-mure was nie. Daar was wel brandblussers teen die mure en inwoners het hiervan gebruik gemaak om die brand te probeer blus.” Hierdie woonstelle is geleë bokant die bekende vrugtehandelaar, Boeties. Die eienaar, Achmat Khan, het gesê dat sy winkel geweldige waterskade opgedoen het en dat duisende rande se voorraad beskadig is.
Bo en behalwe dit, sê hy dat elke dag wat sy besigheid se deure gesluit bly, ly hy ’n groot finansiële verlies. “Ek weet nie hoe ons hier gaan deurkom nie.” Peceur het gesê dat dit onseker is wanneer die winkels onder die woonstelle heropen sal kan word. “Die forensiese ondersoek moet eers afgehandel word en die veiligheid van die gebou sal bepaal moet word.” Na beraming sal dit maande neem voordat die woonstelle herstel is, weens die omvang van die skade. In hierdie tydperk sal daar nie hiér intrek geneem kan word nie. Omdat alle munisipale noodbehuising tans vol is, het die gestrande inwoners alternatiewe blyplek by familie gekry. WA Joubert Laerskool het ’n muntlegging gehou, en die pragtige totaal van altesame R1704,30 ingesamel. Dit bring die insameling tot dusver vanjaar te staan op R25 856,75 met net een week oor om die mikpunt van R35 000 voor Kersfees te haal. Alle bydraes word in ’n afsonderlike bankrekening inbetaal en deur die Ge-
meenskapskas teruggeploeg in die Paarlvallei. Die organisasies wat sal baat by u skenking is die ACVV (Paarl, Paarlvallei, Wellington en Franschhoek), Rusoord-ouetehuis, Oase-dienssentrum vir senior burgers, Badisa (Paarl, Wellington en Saron), Kindersorg (Paarl en Wellington), die Drakenstein sentrum vir gestremdes, Carecraft, Abbeyfield-tehuis vir bejaardes op Wellington, Andrew Murray-kinderhuis, Haven nagskuiling, Amado-perdryterapiesentrum en Good Hope sielkundige dienste. Vrou probeer haar kinders, haarself uitwis ’n PLAASLIKE vrou het verlede week eers haar kinders probeer doodmaak, voordat sy die mes op haarself gedraai het. Dié voorval het Donderdagoggend in ’n huis in D’Olivierastraat, langs Bolandpark in Paarl-Oos, plaasgevind. Die vrou het glo haar kinders, ’n tienerdogter en -seun,
bedwelm en hul polse met ’n mes gesny. Hierna het sy haar eie polse gesny, asook haar keel. Haar man van wie sy geskei is, het toevallig kort hierna by die woning aangekom om sy onderhoudsgeld aan haar te betaal, toe hy op die bebloede toneel afgekom het. Hy het sy gewese vrou en twee kinders inderhaas na Paarl Mediclinic geneem. Die vrou, wie se naam nie bekend gemaak mag word nie om haar minderjarige kind te beskerm, is volgens gerugte ’n depressielyer. Die kinders is Vrydag uit die hospitaal ontslaan maar hul ma, wat toevallig ’n verpleegster is, is in ’n ernstige toestand in die noodeenheid van die hopsitaal opgeneem. Sy is steeds in die hospitaal waar haar toestand vandeesweek as ernstig, maar bevredigend beskryf word. ’n Woordvoerder van die polisie, kapt Louise du Plessis, het bevestig dat twee klagtes van poging tot moord teen die vrou ondersoek word. “Die vrou kon weens die erns van haar toestand nog nie ondervra word nie. Ons wag ook vir die resultate van toksikologie-toetse om vas te stel of sy wel die kinders bedwelm het. Hulle sê dat hulle nie bewus is van enige bedwelming nie.”

Die voorval het plaasgevind naby die noordelike ingang van Paarl Mall. ’n Motorwag het opgelet dat die baba wakker geword het en met ’n bloedrooi gesig binne die toegesluite motor paniekbevange geraak het. Toe die motorwag besef het dat hy nie toegang tot die motor kon kry nie, het hy sekuriteitsbeamptes van die Mall nader geroep. Hulle kon sien dat die kind erg begin ly het weens die hitte binne-in die motor en hulle het ’n venster gebreek. Die skreeuende kind is uitgehaal en kort hierna het sy ma teruggekom. Polisiebeamptes het op die toneel aangekom en die vrou en kind is na die kantore van die Mall geneem. CELEBRATE. On 1 December Het Gesticht Museum, in collaboration with the Afrikaanse Language Museum, celebrated the emancipation of the slaves. Slaves played an essential role in the history and heritage of Drakenstein Community. Het Gesticht slave church in Paarl was built in 1813 and is the fourth oldest church building in South Africa. Talle klagtes is reeds oorgedra vanaf woonstelbewoners in Lady Greystraat, asook die omliggende residensiële areas van Waterkant-, Kasteel, Swartvlei-, en selfs Sinagogestraat. A gift that changes lives
WITH just more than two weeks to go before Christmas, the frenzy of spending has started with shops stock-piled with Christmas goodies, enticing the public to part with their hard earned cash. With the financial crisis far from over, it is to be recommended that one thinks twice before emptying one’s pockets on unnecessary, lavish gifts. This time of the year we should rather take a moment to remember the thousands of less fortunate people in our midst - people whose lives depend on organisations such as Hospice, the Haven homeless shelter, old age homes and children’s homes, to mention just a few. Many of these organisations have very little or no government funding and depend entirely on donations from the public. And then they go that extra mile to try and bring cheer to the lives of people whose days are a constant battle for survival. The Paarl Post Christmas Fund was established to lend a helping hand to such organisations right across the Drakenstein area, to give something back to the members of the community who are in dire straits, so take a moment to think where you can cut back and help give the less fortunate something to smile about.
Is Heath objective? JUDGE Willem Heath has been re-appointed to head the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). He is the founding head of the unit under President Mandela who stepped down after the Constitutional Court ruled that a sitting judge cannot head such a unit. Heath resigned as a judge after President Mbeki refused to grant him early retirement and eventually stepped down as the head of the SIU. There was a huge outcry when President Mbeki let him go. President Zuma has brought Judge Heath back. One would expect that there would be ululations now that he has been brought back. Alas, there is none. There is an outcry from the same quarters that complained when he was allowed to leave. They argued then that he was a man of integrity and they complain now that he lacks the same. I did not take much notice until I read an interview of Heath with the City Press. I could not help feeling that Heath brings factional party politics into his work. He is making comparisons betLUVUYO ween the current ZANTSI ANC leadership and the previous one. Heath claims that the post-Polokwane leadership is far better than the previous one, whilst bitterly complaining about his treatment by the previous ANC leadership as presided over by former President Thabo Mbeki. He claims Mbeki made him a “pauper” and caused him to start his life “from scratch”. Reading the interview one can not miss the bitterness that oozes from the former judge. In the entire interview Heath comes up as a factionalist who wants to protect everything about the ANC President and has a grudge against those who might disagree with him. It is not his place as a head of the Special Investigations Unit. He can just join an ANC branch and pursue that line of thinking within it. interests, none has ever verbalised it like Willem Heath did. Isn’t he supposed to be impartial? The SIU head’s masterpiece was when he was responding to a question about why only Schabir Shaik and Tony Yengeni were prosecuted for the arms deal. His response was: “They were sacrificed. It was easy to sacrifice them. And then, of course, Mbeki initiated Zuma’s prosecution – not only as far as the corruption charPosbus | PO Box 409 ges were concerned, but also on Paarl 7620 the rape case.” edit@paarlpost.co.za Heath was asked whether he had proof for this and responded that Mbeki “dictated to the NPA what decisions they had to take. I can’t disclose the evidence to you, but generally there was no doubt he had a strong say in those decisions; yet the NPA was supposed to be completely independent.” The journalist probed further and asked whether the rape case was a set-up. The man who will lead the Special Investigations Unit responded that it was indeed a set-up. What the above comments actually do is to allege that a LUVUYO president broke the ZANTSI law whilst in office. They also allege that the National Prosecuting Authority has not acted without fear or favour or prejudice as envisaged in the preamble of the legislation that governs it (Act 32 of 1998). I am in agreement with the Centre for Constitutional Rights that the NPA “bears the sole responsibility for determining who will, and who will not be, prosecuted”. That is, at least, according to legislation. Is a senior member of the NPA not supposed to ensure that something is done about his/her knowledge of violations of the law? Should he run to the media and make many reckless allegations that have not been investigated and proven by any court of law? As the ANC is going to its Mangaung Congress in 2012 it is expected that allegations of the improper use of state organs will be rife and unfortunately the new head of the SIU is not reassuring on this aspect.

By nadere ondersoek vind Koos dat dit ’n besonderse Familiebybel is. Behalwe vir die buite-omslag wat losgeruk het, was skade aan die Bybel minimaal. VRYDAG haas ek my na die Landdroskantoor op Wellington net om te kyk of my vriend gehelp is met die aansoek om interdik. Maar almal is na die ‘party’ toe. FUN. Despite the sweltering heat on Sunday, there was enthusiastic particpation in the first Wine, Dine & Dog Day held at Nelson’s Creek Wine Estate on Sunday. Dogs and their human handlers travelled from as far afield as Cape Town and Somerset West to take part in the day of four legged fun. All proceeds of the day went to the Wellington SPCA. CRIME. On the eve of his 100th birthday, a visitor from Wales, Searson Thompson was shown the ropes at the Paarl police station by Col Desmond van der Westhuizen. Thompson was very interested in the workings of a police station, as his home town of Aberdovey has no police station, due to the lack of crime. Here Thompson is shown the operational room at the police station where police officers monitor footage from closed circuit cameras which have been placed along Lady Grey Street and at Huguenot railway station. Glenn ken van vasbyt Frans le Roux GLENN WARD (21), ‘n passievolle “bloubloed” Paarliet, se lewe het in 2008 tydens sy matriekjaar aan Hoër Jongenskool drasties verander. Glen was die passasier agterop ‘n vriend se motorfiets toe hulle ‘n ongeluk maak. Hy vertel wat daardie aand gebeur het: “Ons het gery toe sien ons nie die gat langs die drein nie. Toe ons deur hom is, was dit reeds te laat.” Hy was maande lank in die hospitaal en rehabilitasiesentrum. Glen is vandag ‘n parapleeg, verlam vanaf die bors tot by sy voete. Op skool was hy ‘n kranige sportman wat in rugby sowel as krieket geskitter en sy provinsiale kleure verower het: “Sport was my lewe op skool, ek het Boland krieketkleure gekry en het eerstespan-rugby gespeel.” Ná baie moeilike tye het hy uiteindelik besef hy sou nie sport kon ignoreer nie. Die atletiekgogga het hom gebyt en hy kies gewigstoot en diskus as sy twee areas. Hy ontvang in 2009 toe WP-kleure. Tydens sy deelname aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Paraplegiese Spele in 2010 oortref hy verwagtinge en slaan twee goue medaljes los in sy onderskeie items. Goud was steeds nie vir hierdie lewenslustige jong man genoeg nie en hy het ‘n nuwe uitdaging gaan soek: “Ek het nie daarvan gehou om stil te sit tydens atletiek nie.” Ward het hom toe by ‘n handfietsgroep aangesluit. Hy beoefen al reeds vyf maande die nuwe fietsry en geniet elke oomblik. “Die fietsry maak dat ek kan leef en rondbeweeg”. Handfietse is egter geweldig duur en Ward het lank gesoek na die regte een. “Ek gaan nog lank aan hom afbetaal,” vertel hy laggend. Kort nadat hy begin het, ontvang hy WP kleure vir handfiets ook. Die onderhoud op fietse is nogal duur en baie tegnies: “My pa help my daarmee en sonder hom sou ek nie kon deelneem nie.” Hy is so gretig om te verbeter dat hy net wil inklim en ry. Sy dryfkrag is ongelooflik. Volgens Ward put hy sy grootse motivering vanuit sy geloof. “Ek staan elke oggend op en sê vir die Here dankie vir alles wat ek het.” Hy sit in ‘n rolstoel, maar wil steeds berge versit en die onmoonltike vermag. Hy deel die sport met legendes soos Ernst van Dyk (ook van die Paarl). Naas sy geloof het hy ‘n baie sterk ondersteunersbasis wat bestaan uit sy liefdevolle familie en natuurlik sy meisie. “Ek het ‘n awesome familie en ‘n great meisie wat my lewe ná die ongeluk baie vergemaklik het.” Ward volg ook ‘n streng oefenprogram. ”Ek is ses dae van die week in die gimnasium en naweke op die fiets.” Onlangs het 6 Star MuscleTech sy potensiaal gesien en besluit om hom te borg: “Dit is baie cool dat hul my borg, ek kry gratis aanvullings wat my help tydens my oefeninge.” Op die pad vorentoe vir Ward is die SA Spele 2012 in Durban: “Ek beoog om gekies te word vir die SA byeenkoms in Durban en sal enige hulp of donasies waardeer om my daar te kry.” Hy benodig hulp met reis-, verblyf- en onderhoudskoste vir sy fiets. Arrive safely home after holidays “ALL Safely Home programmes and initiatives aimed at increasing road safety during the festive season are in place as a transversal approach between the Western Cape Departments of Community Safety, Transport and Health.”k These were the words of Minister of Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, at the launch of the annual Safely Home campaign. This festive season, authorities will once again focus on visibility, enforcement and education on all national and provincial routes in the Western Cape. “Our Safely Home campaign sees an integrated law enforcement approach and has brought about a 23% reduction in road fatalities in two-and-a-half years. “Whilst all law enforcement officers and medical personnel will be out in full force, we urge every road user to take responsibility and to act in the interest of safety.”
During this period all law enforcement operations will be integrated with SAPS and local Traffic Departments as well as other role players like SARS and Home Affairs. The road agencies are on board to assist with possible emergency road closures and road works, barring major road projects like the N7 project, will be removed to ensure a free flow of traffic. Alcohol and speed are the biggest contributing factors to fatalities on roads and the focus will be to act and rid roads of drunk drivers and speedsters. Integrated weekend alcohol operations will thus continue and motorists can be assured that they will be stopped and tested for driving under the influence. The authorities will be holding more than double the usual number of roadblocks over the two-month period. A total of 325 roadblocks will see 320 000 vehicles being pulled over.
DIAMONDS. Paarl East police literally struck gold last week when they discovered diamonds (foreground) to the value of possibly hundreds of thousands of rands, in the possession of an alleged drug dealer. Police noticed the vehicle of Riduaan Abrahams (alias Waanie) who has previously been linked to drug dealing in Canary Street, Amstelhof. They stopped and searched him and instead of finding drugs in his possession, they found a handful of uncut diamonds in a pocket together with almost R5000 in cash. Abrahams could not explain where the glistening stones came from. He was arrested and the case has been taken over by the organised crime division of the police. Local jeweller Wickus Viljoen said that because the diamonds have not been cut yet, it is difficult to establish exactly how many carats they are, as well as their true value. Pic: Lise Beyers

Steppingstones to a successful education THERE are various steppingstones and skills that parents need to develop in their children to prepare them for school. ) Language: Sing nursery rhymes and make up nonsense sentences to make your child laugh and encourage them to correct the sentence (the frog was riding a bike in the sky). ) Talk and laugh with your child. Tell familiar stories and also make up stories together (cut pictures out of magazines and stick them in a blank book to make own story). Encourage your child to talk about himself and how he feels. ) Pre-reading: Teach your child the basic colours, saying the alphabet, he/shoud should know the names and sounds of letters and develop an early interest in books by reading to him/her as often as possible. ) Knowledge skills: Talk about the different sizes of everyday objects. Use daily activities to discuss concepts such as wet/dry, hot/ cold, bigger/smaller etc. Build jigsaw puzzles together. ) Give step by step instructions so they know how to do things, as they get older tell them what you want done and they must work out the best order to use, give them choices (2 or 3 things at first, then more – don’t give choices about non-negotiable things). ) Encourage your child to ask questions, ask them questions to prevent them from merely accepting things as they ask, ask ridiculous questions to get them to expand their imagination and curiosity – what if you had 4 arms, what if we had a magic carpet etc. Look for shapes every way, make them out of biscuits and bread, cut out

Skool stel eie CD van koor bekend Devidean Moses DIE junior en senior kore van Wagenmakersvallei Primêr het onlangs hul eerste CD, getitel Yonga Amazi (Spaar Water) in die CP van der Merwesaal bekend gestel. Hierdie landelike skool se CD bevat vier liedjies wat in Afrikaans, Engels en isiXhosa gesing word. Nadat die skool vanjaar aan die jaarlikse Waterweekkompetisie van die Drakenstein Munisipaliteit deelgeneem het, het ’n opvoeder, Dimitro Moses, gemeen dat leerders hul liedjies moet opneem. Die kore het tydens die kompetisie in die junior en senior sang-afdeling die eerste plekke verower. Albei groepe het R3500 vir die skool ingepalm en ook ’n ekstra R3000 vir ’n tweede plek wat die leerders in die Plakkaat-afdeling behaal het. “So kon ons met die toestemming van die

Libraries closed
Piekniek met Kersvader
THE municipal library in Gouda will be closed today and the library in Groenheuwel will be closed tomorrow for stock-taking. This is the first Provincial Library Services stock-taking after the migration to the new library information management system (LIMS). During April of this year all libraries in the Drakenstein municipal area were closed for the migration and training of staff in the new system. Drakenstein Library Management encourages and invites patrons to make use of any of the municipal libraries for their holiday reading material. * Local libraries will close at 17:00 during the holiday period with the exception of Wellington Libary which closes at 17:30. The libraries will be closed on 24 and 31 December.

ONE of the top students this year at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow is the promising violinist Jeffrey Armstrong from Wellington. Jeffrey is a Grade 8 learner at Bridge House near Franschhoek. At the recent concert Jeffrey Armstrong at the centre, the near capacity audience was treated to performances of the centre’s top orchestra, the Young Strings, and the four top students. Jeffrey captured the Centre’s Strings Cup and shared the Junior Cup with clarinettist Danielle Rossouw from Bellville. He is a member of both Hugo Lambrecht’s symphony and senior string orchestras. Apart from performances par excellence and awards at the Stellenbosch Art Competition, the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod, Franschhoek Chamber Music Festival and the Stellenbosch Strings Symposium and international chamber music festival, he was a finalist at the Pieter Kooij Competition and a semi-finalist at the national Artscape Competition for soloists. He was voted the most promising student.

Benefit concert A BENEFIT concert for singer, Roberto Meyer (19), will be held at the Strooidak Church in Paarl on 18 December (19:30). Meyer, a student at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre, will be representing SA from 28 December to 9 January at the international competition, Actors, Models and Talent for Christ in Florida. The fund-raising will assist in covering his travel costs. Among those performing with him are soprano Jo-Nette Le Kay, organist Arno Jones and Roy Ferguson (tenor) and Elzaan Smit (violinist). The program will include wellknown solo pieces and duets from opera, oratorio and musical theatre. New river front factories for Paarl THE Paarl business sector was recently given a new lease on life with the development of the Riverside Industrial Park in Textile Street. Here, the old and almost forgotten factories of British American Tobacco were purchased by Van der Sluys Projects and they are being transformed into upmarket factory and office space. The main factory building on the corner of Textile and Moni Streets has been stylishly converted into ten sectional title factories, of which seven have already been purchased. The public have been turning their heads here at the new ‘polka-dot’ fascia of this building. Van der Sluys Projects have themselves converted partofthesiteadjacenttotheBerg River to house their own offices. Currently work is also in progress, converting another factory on the property into the new headquarters of Collotype Labels. This move means that Collotype (currently housed at the corner of Market Street and Jan van Riebeeck Drive), will be quadrupling the size of their factory and office space. Developer Alex van der Sluys said that this project was definitely a boost to the local economy. “The owners of the factories which we have already sold are from out of town and are bringing their business here. “The location of the factory is ideal and it is also within walking distance from Huguenot Station.”

Prepare now – before the season gets too silly IN the rush and thrill of composing gift lists, making holiday bookings or preparing Christmas menus, consumers should not forget the more mundane, though arguably more important, preparations for the silly season. Without wishing to be the Grinch who stole Christmas, Gari Dombo, Managing Director of Alexander Forbes Insurance, cautions South Africans “to take a few moments to go through the following check list ahead of setting off on holiday, welcoming your visitors or laying out on that big family bash.” Are your 24/7 numbers up to date, for both car and household emergencies? Take a few minutes to call them and check that they are indeed right and still operable. “You don’t want to be wasting valuable time or, worse still, be unable to reach your insurance and other emergency providers on a public holiday,” warns Dombo. If you are travelling long distances by vehicle make sure your cover is up to date and fully paid. “If you are planning to take your vehicle across one of our borders check that you are covered in the neighbouring territory that you are travelling to” adds Dombo. If not, purchase any additional vehicle cover necessary, including vehicle repatriation cover as it can be very expensive to repatriate a damaged vehicle from a neighbouring country. Also, when travelling across our borders be sure to purchase the compulsory motor liability cover of the country that you are entering and “it pays to find out what is required in advance so there are no surprises at the border,” suggests Dombo. Panel beaters close from mid December to mid January. So, if you are dependent on your vehicle for the holiday period make sure your policy provides a replacement hired vehicle, or buy temporary vehicle replacement hire cover for the period, “because if your car is damaged it may well not be able to be repaired until mid January,” warns Dombo. Check that you have sufficient personal accident cover as well as sufficient medical emergency evacuation cover for that international trip. Local medical aid cover, as well as the cover provided through credit card ticket purchase, is usually insufficient to cover the amounts required for treatment in or emergency evacuation from a foreign country. If you are leaving your home, ideally leave it in the care of a competent house-sitter. Make sure the house-sitter knows all your 24/7 numbers and, beyond police and security companies, that your house-sitter is also able to liaise with your insurer, deal with your vet and contact your plumber and electrician. Ideally, empty your freezer and fridge and switch them off for the whole period that you are away,” advises Dombo. It is also a good idea to switch off all your geysers as this saves electricity and eliminates the possibility of water damage from a burst pipe or leaking geyser. Policy holders should also ensure that pipes, drains and gutters are cleared of debris and leaves so that water can flow freely through and off their property avoiding flooding and damage in their absence. Either way, ensure that your household contents cover is up to date and correctly lists the current replacement value of your insured goods. Check the details of your cover to see what security is required. Most policies require burglar bars, security doors, and an electric fence and/or an alarm connected to a security response team. “Not having the security required by your policy could see any claims lodged on your return rejected,” says Dombo. If you are renting a holiday home on the coast or anywhere else, “make sure that you have an all risks policy that covers electronic and other goods, jewellery and clothing that you and your family take with you in the event these are lost or stolen from you condo or car while on holiday,” adds Dombo. While this seems like an exhaustive list of preparations they are actually all very logical and each only involves a few calls, checks or explanations. Putting the right precautions and preparations in place in the weeks leading up to Christmas or your well-earned break will ensure that if anything does go wrong on public holidays or while you are away it is managed with minimum cost, lost time or inconvenience.”

Ronald Brown, Engineer Waste Services at Drakenstein Municipality (right), recently visited the Netherlands as the South African Water Sector Mission leader to International Water Week in order to establish a partnership between South Africa and the Netherlands. During the International Water Week, Brown was also elected as an International Judge to evaluate water projects designed by engineering students from Asia, Africa and the Netherlands. Here he is seen evaluating one of the projects. According to Brown the Dutch will plan to extend their assistance to local municipalities with low skills and financial capacity.
A NATIONAL travelling exhibition of artworks by Cecil Skotnes, from the KWV art collection, is to be opened in Paarl on 14 December. Titled“Homecoming”,thisisthefinalexhibition in an epic journey which has continued nationwide throughout 2011, and a celebration of the return of the collection back to its home at the Laborie Wine Farm. In 1977, Cecil Skotnes created a piece for KWV which is arguably one of the artist’s most exceptional works. Based on one of the oldest stories of humankind, the Epic of Gilgamesh, Skotnes reimagined this story as the Origin of Wine, and translated it into a remarkable woodcarved panel. This work celebrates not only the complex heritage of the wine-making industry in the Cape, but evokes a love for wine which stems from the ancient epoch of Gilgamesh and continues to the present day. KWV again asked Skotnes to create two series of works for their 1979 and 1982 art calendars. The 1982 series depicts twelve extraordinary landscapes from the Cape region, which powerfully capture the unique terroir from which KWV’s wines are produced. To honour Skotnes and his association with wine, KWV is pleased to present The Epic of Everlasting. Somerreeksatletiek op Coetzenburg DIE voorlaaste atletiekbyeenkoms in die Geelbladsye se Somerreeks is op Donderdag 15 Desember by Coetzenburg. Die vernaamste doelwit van dié Somerreeks is om Suid-Afrikaanse atlete kans te gee om kompetisie-voorbereiding vir die Binnenshuise Wêreldbyeenkoms in Maart te doen. Om dié rede sal elke byeenkoms verskeie nie-standaard nommers op die program hê soos naellope oor 60 m, 150 m en 300 m. Die hekkies-nommers sal oor 60 m en 300 m in plaas van 110 m en 400 m beslis word. Die vier byeenkomste in die Somerreeks is in Port Elizabeth, Oudtshoorn, Stellenbosch en Parow. Elke byeenkoms sal waardevolle blootstelling vir van die land se voorste atlete gee.
Een van die hoogtepunte van die byeenkoms op Coetzenburg, wat om 16:30 begin, beloof om Jan Nehro, ’n blinde atleet, se aanslag op ’n wêreldrekord te wees. Nehro en sy gids, Duane Fortuin, wil ’n nuwe wêreldrekord vir die myl (1 200 m) in die ouderdomsgroep 35-40 jaar opstel. Die 38-jarige Nehro het sy oog op ’n plek in die Suid-Afrikaanse span vir die Paralimpiese Spele in Londen volgende jaar. “Ek wil met die aanslag op ’n wêreldrekord my 2012-seisoen op ’n suksesvolle noot begin,” het Nehro gesê. THE country’s top tournament waterskiers will be descending on the picturesque Bon Esperance waterskiing lake, 17 km south of Malmesbury on the N7, for four days of skiing, which will include a night slalom competition tonight (8 December) and the West Coast Championships which culminates on Sunday. Paarl Boys’ High School pupil Lohann Vermeulen is part of a large field of nearly 40 skiers representing all age groups in all three tournament disciplines – namely slalom skiing around buoys, ramp jumping and trick skiing. Skiing gets underway at 08:00 each day from Friday, with the night skiing starting tonight at 20:00. Spectators will enjoy commentary to enjoy the relaxed family event and are welcome to bring picnic baskets or can enjoy refreshments available at the ski site. Entrance is free.
THE Drakenstein Municipality’s Community Games started yesterday and will continue until the final on 16 December. The games will be held at a different venue every day, from 10:00 until 16:00. The children will take part in athletics, rugby, cricket, soccer, netball, indigenous games, dancing, singing and art. This games aim at providing a platform for the youth to create a culture of continuous learning. Today the games continue at New Orleans High School, then Paulus Joubert Primary School (9 December), followed by Mbekweni rugby field (12 December), Van Wyk’s Vlei play park in Wellington (13 December) and Saron rugby field (14 December). THE first Taalmonument Night Race, presented in collaboration with the Historium Conference Centre and Paarl Athletics Club, takes place on Wednesday 14 December, at the monument on Paarl Mountain. The race is held in aid of Andrew Murray House, a Wellington orphanage. Drakenstein Municipality is one of the main sponsors of the event. The race, held in accordance with the rules of Athletics South Africa and Athletics Boland, follows an exciting and challenging route. The 10 km race starts at 18:30 and the 5 km fun run at 18:40. The entry fee is R40 for the 10 km race (temporary numbers will be available at R25) and R15 for the fun run. Walkers are welcome to enter. Entrance will be free for
Full moon hike ON Friday it is again time for the Delvera Hi-Tec Full Moon Hike. The starting point is at the Dirtopia Trail Centre on Delvera farm on the R44 between Klapmuts and Stellenbosch. The hike will start not later than 18:00 with the sunset at 19:49 and the moonrise at 18:59. The cost is R50 (R20 for children u.10). It includes an optional shuttle to the halfway mark and a map. The distance is a 9,75 km in total with a 5 km option with a farm vehicle assistance to the half-way mark. Bookings are essential. In die semi-finaal wat Saterdagoggend gespeel is, het Young Peoples (133/7) vir Wellington-CPUT geklop met 18 lopies met Lorenzo Jacobs (62) en Kurt Martin (25), Jacobs (4/25) wat ook met die bal uitgeblink het. Cyclists can prepare PREPARATIONS are well underway for the upcoming Bouckaert-Soenen Paarl Road and MTB Race organised and managed by the Rotary Club of Paarl, under the auspices of the Pedal Power Association (PPA) on Sunday 29 January next year. Supported by a generous sponsorship from local textile and clothing company, Bouckaert-Soenen, as part of their social responsibility activities, all proceeds from the race will be channelled through Paarl Rotary towards community development projects. This league race is also a fun-ride event, aimed at the whole family. The event will include two road races, the longest being 120 km, and two mountain-bike races on Paarl Mountain, with the long MTB race route still under negotiation with the local authorities. The shorter MTB race along Jan Phillips Mountain Drive is billed as a development race with affordable entry fees. Saints up against big guns in Mayoral Cup final THE men from Powell Street (Saints FC) will take on the big guns, Mbekweni United, in Saturday’s final of the 2011 Mayoral Soccer Cup. This match starts at 15:00 on the A-field of the Mbekweni Sport Stadium. Saints play in the Promotional League, which is two leagues lower than the national Vodacom League, in which Mbekweni United plays. The forecast is that Saints will give them a run for their money with Gianno Fransman en Johnwin Samuels back in the team. The Mayoral Cup finals start with the ju-
nior matches at 09:00. In the u.11 final, Mbekweni All Stars will play against Mbekweni United. At 09:45 Mbekweni Sundowns will play against Spoilers in the u.13 final. Mbekweni United will meet All Stars in the u.15 final at 10:30 and in the u.17 final (11:30) Mbekweni United is up against City Killers.
