SMS scam costs woman R10 000 A WOMAN is more than R10 000 out of pocket, after she became a victim to an SMS fraudster. According to Paarl East police spokesperson, WO Anthony Sauls, the complainant, a woman from Groenheuwel, received an SMS informing her that she had won R250 000. She was told to phone a certain number and then told to deposit R3650 deposit into a bank account, before her winnings would be paid to her. She did this, but was once again contacted and told to deposit another R6700 into the account. This she also did and needless to say, the fraudster disappeared. Sauls said that the woman has laid a charge of fraud and the police are currently tracing the cellphone number and investigating the bank account into which the woman deposited the money. He added that people should ignore such SMS messages. “The public must not respond to any such messages.”

Armed robbery suspect caught A SUSPECT was arrested last week in connection with a series of armed robberies that have taken place in the Wellington area. Ten days ago an armed robbery took place at a fish shop at Weltevrede Centre. Here a armed man demanded money from the owners and then fled in a white Mazda. The next day a similar incident occurred at Rheeder Butchery in Melling Street. But Sgt Morné Claasen received information about the vehicle which the suspect had been using. He was able to trace the vehicle and monitored the driver’s movements, before arresting him. Police said that they are investigating the possibility of whether this suspect can be linked to the spate of armed robberies which hit Wellington during the last six months. Wellington police also released two identikits of suspects in last year’s armed robbery at American Swiss in Church Street, Wellington. Man charged with abduction of missing child Lise Beyers THERE is still no sign of the six-year-old child who went missing in Mbekweni almost three weeks ago. This despite a confession from her alleged murderer and an intensive search of the entire area in and around Mbekweni by police and community members. Asemahla Ntsabo went missing without a trace on Saturday evening 21 January after she had been playing VICTIM. But despite the dam being scoured by police divers and the area searched with the help of a police helicopter, no sign of the child has been found. Oud-leerder bedrieg Wellingtonners ’n OUD-LEERDER van Bergrivier Sekondêr is glo besig om talle mense te bedrieg, deurdat hy onder valse voorwendsels fondse insamel. Volgens Louis Davids, skoolhoof van Bergrivier Sekondêr, is die 22-jarige man inderdaad ’n oud-leerder van die skool. “Maar hy samel wederregtelik geld in, kamstig vir ’n atletiekbyeenkoms in Sasolburg waaraan hy moet deelneem.

“Hy is reeds ’n paar jaar gelede uit die skool uit, maar hy klop by mense aan vir geld en dra ’n atletiekfrokkie van Bergrivier Sekondêr.” Davids vra die gemeenskap om lig teloop en beslis nie vir hierdie man se streke te val nie. “Indien kinders om fondse vra, kan die skool gekontak word by 021 873 2301 vir navrae hieroor.”

A FISHY STORY. Grown fisherman would have had tears in their eyes this week at the sight of more than 100 large carp which surfaced belly-up at a fresh water dam adjacent to the Paarl water treatment works. These dams are renowned for the amount of large fish in them, both barbel and carp. The deaths are due to a decrease in the water level, thus causing a shortage of oxygen in the water. The fish were destroyed after they were retrieved from the dam by municipal workers, as they are not fit for human consumption. Freedom Race draws thousands to Paarl THE 27 for Freedom race this Saturday takes place on the same day as Nelson Mandela’s release from prison 22 years ago. This race is becoming as iconic to Paarl as the Two Oceans is to Cape Town and the Comrades Marathon is to Kwazulu-Natal. It is a lasting tribute to Nelson Mandela, his first steps to freedom and his contribution to reconciliation in South Africa The date of the race is not the only association with the man who became South Africa’s first democratically elected president. The course will include Drakenstein Prison, where Mandela took his first steps to freedom on 11 February 1990. The full race distance, 27 km, signifies the number of years which he was behind bars. Runners will also be able to catch a glimpse of the house in which he spent his last days as a prisoner in Paarl. Last year more than 10 000 people took part. Indications are that the number of participants will continue to grow this year. What makes the race different from other athletics events is the fact that it’s a family event, as well as an opportunity for serious runners looking to get some running practice. Categories range from the full distance of 27km, a 10 km race as well as a 5 km one (enter on the day).

Avoid these malicious scams

MANY will say that those falling prey to a get-rich-quick scheme got what they deserved. But still it is sad to hear of another local resident who has stepped in this trap, losing more than R10 000 - basically her life savings. It has become evident that around every corner there is someone trying to maliciously make a quick buck, selling the public tall stories of getting rich quick. And unfortunately, in this dire economic climate, more and more people all falling for these scams. An increasing number of fraudulent scams and hoaxes are being circulated, not only via SMS. Computer users are inundated by this every day with messages such as: “Congratulations!!! You won R1 000 000,00 in the on-going Chevron UK bonanza.” Or “Your e-mail address has won US$ 500 000,00. Please contact Elizabeth to claim your prize”. Unfortunately, there are simply no get rich quick schemes. Those luring the public into these traps are the only ones who are going to make a quick buck, leaving the already embattled individual in dire straits.

Playing power POST games THE oldest liberation movement in Africa, the African National Congress (ANC), is 100 years old. This is a big deal as evidenced by the comments of leaders from many political parties. The President of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Mangosuthu Buthelezi commented thus: “I attend this celebration as a leader whose life story cannot be read in isolation from that of the African National Congress. My destiny was linked to the ANC both by choice and by birth”. The United Democratic Movement’ president Bantu Holomisa says that being in the ANC was a “learning curve” for him and that he feels “fortunate to still have that background”. The Acting Secretary General of the Congress of The People (COPE), Lyndol LUVUYO Shope-Mafole, reZANTSI members growing up in the ANC as an “honour”. I believe that it is useful to celebrate the past through a learning mentality and a willingness to reflect on the present. One of the successes of the founders of the ANC has been the foresight and profound understanding that Africans are more than tribes and language groups. They came out strongly against tribalism and formed for the first time an organisation that united Africans across tribal and provincial boundaries. This is because tribalism has bedeviled many African countries and there was also going to be no way to later unite black people if Africans were divided. This is why many of us were horrified when there were ANC members who wore “100% Zuluboy T-shirts” before the Polokwane Conference in 2007. We believed that this was in stark contrast to what the ANC traditionally stood for. We were however consoled by the fact that those who supported both Presidential candidates came from diverse groups and therefore the demon of tribalism had not triumphed. Would they take kindly to the fact that in the Eastern Cape, a province that fared poorly with matric results, the teachers belonging to the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) are on a go slow? One of these teachers’ demands is for the Head of the Education Department to LUVUYO resign because he is ZANTSI not doing what they “deployed him for”. I did not understand this statement from a SADTU leader until I learnt that this Head of Department had previously left the Department and this teacher union pushed for him to be reappointed. Our nation cannot sit idle whilst careless people play power games with the future of our children. From what I read I am confident that those dedicated teachers like Langalibalele Dube, ZK Mathews, Oliver Tambo who led the African National Congress in its hundred years, would denounce SADTU’s action as being counter-revolutionary. The current history of the ANC seems to belie the historical selfless spirit of the organisation as factions are focused on triumphing even if it is over the carcass of what used to be a glorious Movement. The Polokwane conference in 2007 was an example of this and Mangaung is threatening to be worse, unless the attitude of the founders of the ANC re-manifests itself. As we hope for the best, we still feel proud to say: Happy one hundred years “Khongolose wa Bantu (Congress of the People)”

Ek verwys na die brief “Vodacom stel my baie teleur” in die Paarl Post van 26 Januarie waarin Ongelukkige Kliënt kla dat hy teleurgesteld is in die Vodacom-winkel in Paarl Mall. Hy het sy foon op 16 Desember ingelewer vir herstelwerk en teen 12 Januarie steeds sonder foon gesit. Nadat sy klagte onder ons aandag gebring is, is daar kontak gemaak met die klient om hom in kennis te stel van die status van die foon. Die kliënt het sy foon ontvang op Vrydag 27 Januarie en ons het bevestig met die klient dat die foon 100% werk. Taking back the Arboretum “THE Arboretum is a very special place and Paarl can be proud to have such an asset. It is indeed one of its kind in the world,” says Drakenstein Executive Mayor, Gesie van Deventer. Unfortunately for many years it has not been secured against entry of vagrants and people with criminal tendencies and has become an unsafe place for public use and recreational purposes. And now it is time to take back the Arboretum. During a fact-finding outing, the Mayor, councillors and heads of department visited the Arboretum last year and are now in the process of drafting a strategic economic plan for the use of the Arboretum which will benefit the entire community. This will include utilisation of the Arboretum, whilst reserving the botanical value and heritage for future generations. As a first step limited security patrols will commence early in February during certain hours of the day. Notice boards will be erected to indicate the hours of the patrols. Law-enforcement will also take place over weekends, especially during hot weather when the rivers banks are used for relaxation. A private security company has been contracted for the first five months of this year to patrol the park. This will consist of two security guards on bicycles, with a radio or cellphone that is connected to a control room. The times of these patrols will be from 06:00 until 09:00 and from 16:00 until 20:00 from Monday to Friday and 06:00 until 20:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The public is still warned to be vigilant when visiting the Arboretum. This program will be expanded over a period of time to eventually cover the whole Arboretum. Safe paths for running and walking will also soon be indicated with markers. Members of the public are invited to contact the Mayor’s Office should they wish to make a contribution, be it financial or by means of other support. “It is my heartfelt intention to restore this amazing asset to the glory it deserves, but limited resources are a serious restraint,” said the Mayor. As part of this strategic plan The Mayor’s office invites all interested parties and experts to make themselves available as part of an Advisory Committee to advise the Mayor about the Arboretum’s Biodiversity. Vir 800 jaar voor die ontstaan van Valentynsdag het die Romeine ’n heidense feesviering in middel-Februarie gehou ter ere van die god Lupercus, waartydens jong mans se oorgangsrites herdenk is. Dié verrigtinge het onder meer bestaan uit ’n lotery waarin jong mans die naam van ’n tienermeisie uit ’n hoed getrek het. Sy was dan vir die res van die jaar sy minnares. In ’n poging om ontslae te raak van hierdie heidense gebruik het Pous Gelasius beveel dat die lotery verander word – die vroue se name moes vervang word met dié van heiliges. Rev Jonathan Clayton who lived in Charleston Hill was known as the quick schemer. He left Paarl 25 years ago because of his lifestyle of crime. He worked as a Design Engineer until 2006 and in 2007 he moved into a product management role for Actronic’s information solutions products where he was responsible for delivering productivity improvement products used in several mining and aggregate industries across the world, including South Africa. Nigel relocated to the USA in April 2010, where he is currently completing a Masters of Business Administration at the prestigious WP Carey Business School in Arizona. New institute of viticulture launched THE South African wine and table grape industries and Stellenbosch University, in a joint venture, have established an Institute of Viticulture and Oenology (IVO) to enhance the international competitiveness of the country’s wine and table grape sectors. To be housed in Stellenbosch University’s Department of Viticulture and Oenology, IVO is intended to promote world-class teaching, research and technology development, focusing on projects that will strengthen the relevance and quality of the country’s offerings on international markets. Jan Booysen, executive manager of Winetech that currently co-ordinates research, training and technology transfer in the wine industry, has been appointed IVO’s interim director on a part-time basis. An interim board has been appointed whose members include representatives from Stellenbosch University, SA Liquor Brandowners’ Association, VinPro, Wine Cellars South Africa, as well as private cellar owners, the table grape industry and donor organisations. The board will also include two specialist independent experts. A spokesperson for IVO said that now that a structure for the institute has been created, the next step would be to seek funding from the private sector. MORE than 3 000 entries have been received for the 27 km, 10 km and 5 km events that kick off at 06:30, 07:00 and 09:00 respectively, on Saturday 11 February, for the 27 for Freedom Race. It is the 22nd anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s historic walk to freedom from that very spot in front of the Drakenstein Correctional Facility on the R301 between Paarl and Franschhoek. All participants who successsfully entered before last Sunday’s deadline may collect their race numbers at the Boland Park Stadium (cricket) on Langenhoven Avenue in Paarl East, today (11:00 to 20:00) and tomorrowbetween 11:00 to 17:00. All successful entrants will be notified by SMS or e-mail of their registration as well as their allocated race numbers. Their website will confirm that you are registered. The organisers said the physical administrative process is now closed. No late paper, fax or email entries will be accommodated nor will any cash or deposit payments be accommodated at any point. The only exception is for those who wish to enter for the 5 km Freedom Route. They may enter up and until the morning of the race. They can also enter today and tomorrow at the Boland Park Stadium.

To accommodate special circumstances and late entries for the 10 km and 27 km, prospective participants can only enter and pay online on www.nm27forfreedomrace.co. za between 08:00 and 12:00 today. “There is no other option available. Check the website to confirm that you are registered. These participants may only collect their numbers from Friday 18:00 or on the race day at the Main Hall at the Drakenstein Correctional Facility,” Harlan Cloete, one of

the organisers, said. Traffic will be free flowing on the R301 road on the morning and vehicles will be able to access the prison grounds until 06:00. Thereafter participants will be directed to park at an adjacent farm. Participants and spectators are advised to arrive early on the race day.
