Noue ontkomings toe skote klap MARYKE SWART

Volgens Brenda het die donkerkleurige motor, wat toe nou voor hulle ry, spoed vermeerder, verby die Jetta gejaag en dié motor gestamp. Die Jetta het met die stamp geswaai en met sy neus oos, dwars in die pad tot stilstand gekom.

Die donkerkleurige motor het weer op die Jetta afgepyl en hom gestamp. Onwetend of hulle die teiken is en of hulle net in die spervuur van ’n dispuut tussen die twee motoriste beland het, het Gert besluit om weg te jaag. Dis toe dat hulle ’n harde klapgeluid hoor. Brenda sê sy het gesien hoe ruk haar man se lyf, maar hy het aanhou ry. “Die weg-spin, die klap en sy lyf wat ruk ... dit het alles so gelyk gebeur.” Eers toe hulle in die Hoofstraat, Paarl, is, het hy stilgehou en het hulle hulp ontbied. Hulle het toe vasgestel dat ’n skoot wat deur die agterruit gevuur is, die agterkant van die sitplek getref het en Gert in die rug gewond het. Hy is na die Paarl Mediclinic

geneem waar hy in die intensiewe sorgeenheid opgeneem is. Brenda sê dit gaan nou goed met hom en hy is intussen na die algemene saal oorgeplaas. Volgens haar sal die koeël waarskynlik in sy rug moet bly, omdat dit glo te gevaarlik sal wees om dit te verwyder. * In nog ’n voorval slegs ’n uur vroeër, het ’n man en sy passasier, albei van Seepunt, ook ’n noue ontkoming gehad toe ’n onbekende motor op dieselfde pad in hulle baan inbeweeg het. Toe die man spoed verminder om ’n ongeluk te vermy, het hy gesien hoe iemand van die kant van die pad af op sy motor afpeil. Hy het petrol gegee om weg te kom toe hy ook ’n harde klapgeluid hoor. Hy het besluit om aan te hou ry.

By die huis gestop, het hy ondersoek ingestel en die koeëlgat in sy deur gekry. Hy het die voorval by Seepuntpolisie aangemeld waarna dit na die Paarl oorgeplaas is. Paarl-polisiewoordvoerder, kapt. Louise du Plessis, sê geen verdagtes is nog geïdentifiseer nie. “Paarl-polisie wil die publiek inlig om ekstra versigtig te wees wanneer hulle hierdie pad ry en nie op die pad te stop nie.” ’n Klag van poging tot moord word ondersoek. * A man from Paarl was shot in the back while driving on the Simondium Road near Paarl. In another incident on the same day, a man from Sea Point discovered that his car had also been struck by a bullet – on the same road.

NARROW ESCAPE: The driver of a BMW was lucky to escape with only light injuries after he allegedly lost control of his vehicle, whereafter it rolled on the Swawelstert Road, in the Klein Draken stein farming area. Moments later the vehicle burst into flames. Tessa van Leeuwen Boomkamp, secretary of the Drakenstein Farm Watch, a new structure registered by the Community Police Forum in Paarl, heard the crash and went to investigate.

Man escapes from burning vehicle “I was sitting in the kitchen when I heard a loud ‘bang’, and immediately went to see what had happened,” says Tessa van Leeuwen Boomkamp, secretary of the Drakenstein Farm Watch, after a vehicle rolled and burst into flames on the Swawelstert Road. “When I arrived at the scene, the car was only burning slightly. I asked two men on the scene where the driver was and if anyone was injured. “But they told me that the driver was not in the vehicle.” Tessa removed the fire extinguisher from the Farm Watch vehicle and tried to extinguish the flames. Unfortunately the car wouldn’t stop burning and soon it was engulfed in flames. Tessa then noticed the driver wandering around, with blood coming from his head. She approached him and

asked him to sit on the ground so that she could give him some medical assistance while waiting for the emergency services. “Once the driver was sitting down, stabilised and breathing normally, I went back to the road to warn oncoming traffic of the accident scene as the car was now burning badly,” explained Van Leeuwen Boomkamp. She then stayed with the driver until the ambulance service arrived. The 39-year-old driver from Kylemore was transported to Paarl Hospital for further medical treatment. He sustained head and lower back injuries. ) The Drakenstein Farm Watch is a new body registered by the Community Police Forum in Paarl, and consists of a group of active people in sector 4 (rural area) who help others with firefighting, medical emergencies and crime prevention skills.

Laerskoolleerder moker ’n dubbele honderdtal ’n Laerskool-krieketspeler het oornag homself byna tot in die Protea-span gespeel met ’n skitterende vertoning met die kolf. Luan Grundlingh (13) het Saterdag vir sy klub, Northern Bears, teen Pinehurst-krieketklub gespeel. Sy merkwaardige statistieke lees soos iets uit ’n 5-dag toets. Luan was 136 minute voor die penne en het altesaam 103 balle getrotseer. In sy tyd voor die penne het hy ’n allemintige 202 lopies aangeteken. Dit het bestaan uit onder meer 27 viere en 13 sesse. Hierdie was dan ook sy eerste honderdtal wat toe aangegroei het tot ’n sprokies-dubbelhonderdtal. Luan is tans ’n gr. 7-leerder aan die Laerskool Paarl Gimnasium en is ’n kranige sportman. Nie net speel hy vir die skool se o. 13Akrieketspan nie, maar hy is ook die kaptein van die o. 13A-rugbyspan. Sy span het Saterdag vroeg gesukkel met die telling op 19/1 in die vierde boulbeurt. Hy is toe op nr. 3 ingestuur om te gaan kolf en van daar af was hy die doring in sy teenstanders se vlees. “Voorheen het ek gedink ek gaan my rugby verder vat, maar ná die naweek weet ek nie,”

Met die koue winter nou iets van die verlede, het boere reeds begin met hul voorbereiding vir die 2015- oesseisoen. In ’n druiwe- en sagtevrugte-omgewing soos die Paarl, moes boere langer as gewoonlik wag vir die eerste somerreëns om hul gewasse die nodige hupstoot te gee. Wanneer die afgelope twee jaar se winterreënvalsyfers in oënskou geneem word, was 2013 heelwat kouer en natter as 2014. Van Mei tot Augustus 2013 het die Paarl 712 mm reën gekry, terwyl gedurende dieselfde tydperk in 2014 net 561 mm neergesak het. Jaco Engelbrecht, wingerdboukundige by Boland Kelder in die Paarl sê: “Dit is bietjie vroeg om ’n definitiewe skatting oor volgende jaar se oes te maak. Te danke aan die min en laat somerreën het ons beslis gesonder druiwe hierdie jaar. Ons het ’n bestendige winterseisoen gehad en as ek dinge so kyk, kan ons ’n goeie tot bogemiddelde oes vir 2015 verwag.” Jan Eksteen, ’n boer in die Perdebergarea, meen: “Aan die koring-kant gaan ons

Laasjaar was die Bergrivier-dam byna 99% vol terwyl die Wemmershoekdam op 95% gestaan het. In 2014 is die Bergrivierdam steeds op 99%, maar die Wemmershoek het tot 87% gedaal. Zean Bourbon-Leftley, ’n steenvrugboer van die Paarl sê: “Ons verwag volgende jaar ’n vol oes. Hierdie jaar was daar byna die perfekte blomweer in Augustus en September wat toegelaat het vir die vrugte om baie goed te set. Uitdunning van die boorde is reeds gedoen en die vrugte word daagliks groter. As die weer vorentoe saamspeel sal ons ’n goeie jaar met die steenvrugte beleef.” Met nog somerreën wat vandeesweek verwag word, hoop boere regoor die wye landbouspektrum dat moeder natuur haar wakende hand oor hul oeste sal hou.

"Vergeet-my-nietjies” is n diensorganisasie wat meer as 30 jaar gelede deur ‘n groepie vrywillige Paarl-dames op die been gebring is. Sedert die ontstaan van die organisasie, word daar huidiglik nog steeds maandeliks deur 15 'Vergeet-my nietjies'-lede ‘n gesellige funksie of uitstappie vir al die inwoners van Rusoord-tehuis vir bejaardes aangebied, en deur hierdie groepie vrouens gefinansier.

Bostaande foto was ter viering van lente in Oktober-maand, en die inwoners hulle eie skeppings van lentehoede gedra het.

Op Dinsdag 11 Nov het die afsluitingsgeleentheid nl die Kersfunksie plaasgevind, en geskenkies aan die senior burgers oorhandig is.

Die Frolicks-familie se woordvoerder het vertel dat Dane saam met die familie besig was om voorbereidings te tref vir ’n familiepartytjie wat die volgende dag sou plaasvind. “Die Frolicks-gesin het verskeie mense die aand by hulle huis gehad. Later het twee mans hier aangeklop en gevra of Dane Tatts hier woon. “Hulle wou hê dat Dane vir hulle tattoos moes maak. Dane en sy vriendin het toe die mans by die voorkant van die huis ontmoet. Dane het aan hulle gesê dat as hulle tattoos wil hê, moet hulle ’n afspraak maak. “Die een man het toe sy vuurwapen na Dane se neus gerig en die sneller getrek. Hierna het hy nog drie skote na sy kop geskiet,” vertel die familiewoordvoerder. Volgens ’n bron het daar nuwe inligting aan die lig gekom van ’n insident drie weke gelede waarby Dane betrokke was. Die voorval het glo by ’n koswinkel in Ivanhoe Park, oftewel die Stoepe, plaasgevind, waar Dane en nog jong mans glo teëspoed met ’n Kaapse groep mans opgetel

Eers het my dogter gedog iemand is dalk besig om ’n braaivuur te maak,

maar toe sy die baie rook sien, het sy gaan ondersoek instel.” Sy het op die opslaanhuise afgekom wat in ligte laaie was. Arendse het gesê dat die vlamme baie vinnig na die aangrensende wonings versprei het. “Talle lede van die gemeenskap het enige houer wat hulle in die hande kon kry vol water gemaak om die vlamme te blus terwyl die brandweer onderweg was na die toneel. “Die bekwame brandweermanne was in ’n japtrap op die toneel en het die brand geblus,” sê Arendse. Maar daar was niks meer te redde nie. Die Drakenstein-brandweer het Maandag kospakkies en komberse aan die brandslagoffers geskenk.

Fietsryer sterf in botsing ’n Jong man (26) wat onlangs vir hom ’n fiets gekoop het om fiks te word, is die naweek dood ná ’n botsing met dié einste fiets.

Neil Benecke, wat eers onlangs na die Paarl verhuis het, het Saterdagmiddag omstreeks 17:00 met sy fiets in die Hoofstraat vanaf Noorder-Paarl in die rigting van die dorp gery, toe hy teen ’n motor, wat in Kleinstraat wou indraai, gebots het. Volgens ooggetuies het Benecke versuim om te stop. Hy is op die toneel dood. Die bestuurder van die motor

het nie beserings opgedoen nie. Benecke is oorspronklik van Port Elizabeth in die Oos-Kaap en het Paarl toe gekom opsoek na werk. Hy het ’n agtjarige seun wat in Port Elizabeth woon. Now we all have to fight crime The news this week that gunshots are randomly being fired along the Simondium Road near Paarl is really shocking. During one of these incidents a man was struck in the back by a bullet, while another victim’s car was damaged. And there is evidence that the now notorious balaclava-gang is still very much active, with another attack taking place on a Stellenbosch farm. The once relatively quiet Drakenstein valley is now truly being battered by the unrelenting fist of crime and it seems as if the long arm of the law is battling to take control the situation. It is clear that the police force just cannot deal with the current spate of crime. There is now far more pressure on residents to assist them by being the so-called eyes and the ears of the police force. This isn’t fair, many will say, but unfortunately, that is now how it is. The community is therefore encouraged to become involved in their local neighbourhood watches, or to establish one. It is also important to become involved in community policing forums and to keep the telephone number at hand of your police sector manager. Putting every possible kind of pressure on criminals must eventually deter them from committing crimes in our valley.

Ervaring behoort die kriteria te wees In jeugdige voortvarendheid het ek male sonder tal, in uitgelese geselskap, my uitgelaat oor iets waarvan ek geen ervaring het nie. Nogal met gesag ook. Dankie tog dat ek nie bewus was van die kundige toehoorders se dunk van my intellek nie. Genadiglik het ek vroeg in my grootmenswêreld besef dat dit maklik die domste ding is om te doen in enige geselskap; die praat oor iets waarvan jy nie kennis dra nie. Juis daarom het ek simpatie met die jeug wat agiteer vir en praat oor die lewe se goed waarvan hulle nog niks weet nie. Behalwe natuurlik oor drank, dwelms en seks, waarvan ’n beduidende persentasie heelwat meer weet as die gemiddelde volwassene. Volwassenes wat hulle uitlaat en van my verskil oor iets waarvan hulle werklik nie kennis het nie en selfs opgekook raak indien hulle my nie kan oortuig nie, het heeltemal ’n ander uitwerking op my psige. Ek verwonder my aan die arrogansie waarmee hulle ’n standpunt handhaaf en vind dit amusant dat iemand so dom kan wees dat hy nie besef dat daar moontlik ’n ander kant van die munt of selfs ’n heel ander munt is nie. Ontstellend is wanneer die wat behoort te weet, soos bv. ons agbare adjunk-president, hom uitlaat en sy opinie afdwing oor iets van kardinale belang vir stabiliteit op landbouvlak waarvan hy duidelik geen praktiese of kundige agtergrond het nie. Die onderwerp; plaasuitsettings. Styf teenaan hom staan sy bloedbroer in sy nulervaring van die boerderybedryf in Suid-Afrika. Onderwerp; dopstelsel. ’n Gebalanseerde en kundige opinie oor enige saak, vra heelwat meer as net hoorsê, teorie of selfs emosies. Om dit in ligter luim en op ’n heel ander vlak te illustreer. dat hulle praat oor die verlede se sleg en goed. Daarna hunker om weer die ou paaie te loop. Ou vriende en plekke te sien. Geheel stuitig vir my as hulle bejaarde susters of broers aangespreek word as boetie of sussie. Ek het geluister en my dinke gedink. Soos dat hulle bietjie laf is miskien? Kon nie hulle bekommernis begryp oor kinders, kleinkinders of ’n stokou familielid nie. Dié almal hoeka volwassenes met eie belange, ’n eie lewe. Hulle selfs aanspreek oor vergrype? Of hartseer is oor ’n afgeleefde geliefde wat volgens my lankal saliger moes wees. Nie verstaan hoekom soveel tyd afstaan aan die soort gesprekke of gedagtes nie. Nie wysheid nie, maar goeie opvoeding het my weerhou om my uit te spreek oor die meriete daarvan of erger nog, die gesprek in ’n ander rigting stuur. My jong kop was heeltemal deurmekaar. Waarom mymer oor die ou tyd, wat te sê daarna verlang? Dalk by gebrek aan ’n beter onderwerp? Daar was hartseer en tragedie. Stuk-stuk sekerlik persepsies en nie net feite nie. So dankbaar vandag dat ek nie toe ook myself verswaap het deur my uit te spreek oor iets waarvan ek géén ervaring gehad het nie. Ek is nou daar. Lààànkal verby sestig. My 67-jarige broer is steeds my baba-boetie wat ek wil beskerm en bederf. My kinders, volwassenes op hul eie lewenstog, se wel en wee raak my ten diepste. Vermaan hulle ook. Het onlangs ’n duisend-plus kilometers Oumaalleen gery na my geboortegrond sodat ek en my baba-boetie saam die ou paaie kon loop. Selfs ons 82jarige oom en sy vrou gaan opsoek, nét om die ou goed te praat. Op ’n dowwe noot: ’n Uitstekende voorbeeld van argumentering en veroordeling sonder enige ervaring van ’n situasie is die geval dr. Davison. Ek het ervaring van ’n geliefde se lyding te moet aanskou wat, soos sy moeder, onhoubare pyn verduur a.g.v. ’n kanker-deurtrekte liggaam. Empatie is dus beter as teëspreek.

Blouhuis raak net erger Nadat daar verlede week breedvoerig berig is in Paarl Post oor die berugte blouhuis, was ek diep teleurgesteld teenoor die houding van die munisipaliteit se noodkamer. Saterdag het water vanaf die blouhuis dwarsdeur my erf begin loop. Oënskynlik is ’n onwettige waterkoppeling gemaak en die water stroom toe net van daar af uit. Toe ek dit die Saterdagmiddag aan die munisipaliteit rapporteer, is daar aan my gesê ek moet eenvoudig die voorval Maandag rapporteer. Maar intussen stroom duisende liters water daar uit. Dit is sekerlik ’n reuse vermorsing van water, en wie gaan op die ou einde van die dag daarvoor betaal? Ek sal maar my munisipale rekening goed moet dophou om te kyk dat daar nie skielik ’n reuse-aanslag op my gemaak gaan word nie.

hann Mettler reageer: Die Munisipaliteit het reeds ’n proses begin om ’n oplossing vir die probleem te vind. Die staankraan op erf 832, waarop die sogenaamde blouuis geleë is, word deur die moedswillige bewoners op die erf oopgedraai. Die staanpypaansluiting is onwettig deur iemand gekoppel aan die hooflyn. Dit is nie met toestemming of deur ’n munisipale amptenaar gedoen nie. Hierdie aansluiting het dus ook nie ’n meter nie. Die water wat die heeltyd vloei het ’n vlei gevorm wat van tyd tot tyd in die aangrensede erf invloei. Die

Munisipaliteit het reeds op verskeie geleenthede die onwettige aansluiting probeer ontkoppel, maar die amptenare is egter met geweld gedreig. Die Munisipaliteit het vandeesweek die kraan geskuif van die privaatgrond na ’n aangrensende stuk publieke grond. Die inwoners sal dus steeds toegang hê tot water, maar die munisipaliteit sal toegang hê tot verbruikersdata en ook beter beheer hê om vermorsing te voorkom. Die klagte wat op Saterdag, 8 November, by die munisipale beheerkamer aangemeld is, is oorgedra aan die Waterafdeling. Die Waterafdeling kon as gevolg van die dreigemente,nieopdaardiestadiumdiesituasie aanspreek nie en het aangedui dat ’n besluit Maandag, 10 November, geneem sou word. Die eienaar van die huis is tans besig met die uitsettingsbevel-aansoekteen die bewoners. Die blouhuis gaan nou ook ingevolge die by-wet op probleemgeboue aangespreek word.

Telkom service has become ridiculous I am an 80 year old pensioner living in De Soete Inval, Paarl, and have been waiting for three months now for a landline. I have on various occasions been to Telkom in the Paarl Mall and the service is just terrible – no one helps you. I have completed all the necessary documentation. A month and a half ago a technician, David, was at my house to as-

sess the previous line etc. and he said all was in order for the connection and the line will be connected within a day or two. But I am still waiting and that was the last I heard of him. I am elderly and have health issues and I am looking after my daughter who is also ill. A landline is thus crucial for me, also for my safety.

The strange thing is that I left my previous address in Orange Street, Paarl, a year ago, and I have been informed that Telkom technicians have now been to my old address four times to install a phone. This just does not make any sense and is an example of really poor service.

Op Sondag 2 November het my opslaan-hut in Pietersenstraat, Mountain View, begin brand. Tydens die voorval was ek by ’n familie-funksie.

My seun, wat toe in die huis geslaap het, het betyds wakker geskrik. Die gemeenskap was wonderlik en het almal hande geneem en die brand saam met die brandweer geblus. My opslaan-hut het egter ten gronde gebrand en ek het alles in die proses verloor. Weereens baie dankie vir almal wat gehelp het om die brand te blus.

Paarlite shines in bandana design competition A young Paarl designer has won The Sunflower Fund competition 2015 to design a bandana.

During this competition, second year students from design colleges and universities across South Africa are commissioned by The Sunflower Fund to design the bandana for National Bandana Day. The judges were overwhelmed with the number of entries received and the high standard of the designs, making the final decision a very difficult one. The winning design as well as third place were awarded to students from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). This is the first time since the inception of this competition that CPUT has had two entries in the top

three. The first prize was awarded to Melinda van der Merwe from Paarl, who will receive a Pick n Pay voucher to the value of R5 000, the second place to Terry Jonyo, NeliswaJili and Nathabiseng Molefe collectively who will share a Pick n Pay voucher to the value of R3 000, and the third place winner, Suzanne Swanepoel will receive a Pick ’n Pay voucher worth R2 000. The inspiration behind Melinda’s winning design relates to how every person in the world is different, but whenputtogether,theycreateabeautiful pattern. She particularly used South African shapes and traditional patterns to illustrate this. Her design symbolises that everyone is equal, no matter who they are and that by uniting we can give

hope and decorate each other’s lives in a positive way. National Bandana Day is The Sunflower Fund’s biggest fundraiser and is celebrated on 12 October each year. Melinda’s design will adorn the official Bandana Day bandana next year. All funds raised from National Bandana Day are used to assist endeavours to educate and recruit well-informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors that are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those patients needing a transplant, when suffering from life-threatening blood disorders like leukaemia. Drie van klapmus bende weer voor hof Drie vermeende lede van die berugte klapmusbende wat reeds vir meer as ’n jaar die landelike gebied van Paarl, Groot-Drakenstein, Franschhoek en Stellenbosch teister, verskyn weer eersdaags in die Stellenbosch-landdroshof. Eikestadnuus het vroeër berig Joshua Filipus (37) en Fanuel Boinifituis (24) is in Oktober ná ’n roof op die plaas L’Oliver buite Stellenbosch, vasgetrek. Die twee Namibiese burgers van die Owambo-stam het sedertdien minstens drie hofverskynings gehad, maar dit is elke keer uitgestel omdat daar steeds op ’n Oshiwambo-tolk gewag word. Hulle staan tereg op aanklag van roof met verswarende omstandighede. Mlungisi Mdlangazi (51), die eerste vermeende lid wat in hegtenis geneem is, is steeds in aanhouding nadat hy vroeër op aanklagte van roof en huisbraak met die opset om te roof, verskyn het. Sy saak is intussen by dié van sy makkers gevoeg en die drie sal op 24 November saam in die landdroshof verskyn. Intussen is ’n vrou Saterdagaand op die plaas Lo Relle buite Stellenbosch ook deur twee mans met klapmusse oorval. Volgens ’n polisiewoordvoerder was die vrou besig om televisie te kyk toe iemand haar van agter probeer wurg het. ’n Onbekende man het voor haar kom staan en ’n vuurwapen op haar gerig terwyl ’n man van agter ’n lap in haar mond gedruk het. Hulle het die kluis se sleutels en ander waardevolle items in die huis geeis. Die verdagtes het haar voete met skoenveters vasgebind en hulle het met onder meer ’n Samsung Galaxytablet, ’n Samsung-platskermtelevisie, ’n X-box en speletjies, ’n kamera en ’n grys Mitsubishi Pajero gevlug. Die Pajero is later in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, teruggevind. Die vrou het geen beserings opgedoen nie. Niemand is nog weens die voorval in hegtenis geneem nie. Flats targeted by burglars

Numerous burglaries were reported at flats in the Paarl area this past weekend. Residents of flats are urged to take precautions with regard to leaving windows and sliding doors open. In one incident a woman awoke to find a suspect in her bedroom. The suspect ran off with her handbag. In another incident at another block of flats the suspect entered through an open window and ran off with the complainant’s laptop.

Every dog has a great day MARYKE SWART They say “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”, but that is literally what Lloyd Bristow has been doing for the past 14 years. When he was growing up on a farm outside Port Shepstone in Kwazulu-Natal, dogs would always follow him around, whether they were his own or belonged to family members. This ultimately led him to dog training, a hobby that eventually paid off to such an extent that Bristow, an electrical engineer by training, decided to sell his business and pursue a career in dog agility, devoting his time and attention to training his talented collection of canines and performing with them in The Incredible Dog Show. After being chosen to represent South Africa at the World Agility Championships in 2000, Bristow started presenting dog shows at schools in order to raise funds to go to the championships. This went so well that he eventually decided to make it a permanent hobby, doing at least a show a day and touring the country, educating children and adults alike about dogs. Bristow spends five months a year in Paarl, presenting shows at schools, fundraisers, agricultural exhibitions and festivals across the Western Cape, after which he tours the country for seven months doing the same. Bristow says he mainly uses five dogs in his shows, and also trains them on a daily basis. “It is playing more than training.” He

says the dogs love the show and that is why he uses them as long as they are willing, usually up to the age of 12 or 13. “As long as they are fit and healthy and show me they still want to perform. If you stop, most times they will fall over and die because they love the show so much.” Bristow won the South Africa agility championships in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 with a toy poodle called Vibe and then

again, this year, with a toy poodle called Dazzler. Since 2000 he has participated in the world championships eight times – held in Finland, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Germany again and The Czech Republic. He qualified many other times, but had to decline due to the costs thereof. Bristow says the participants do not get sponsored and therefore have to carry the cost themselves. Most years, about 33 countries compete at the world championships. His best individual result at the world championships was 10th position and their best team result was fifth place. The best part of his job? Spending time with his dogs and making a positive difference in South Africa. “To teach children to look after their animals and to have the opportunity to inspire people to work hard to achieve their goals and dreams.” He says the show is much more that just great entertainment. “It teaches important aspects of responsible pet ownership and the very best part is that it carries a powerful motivational message. Sakeman van Gouda weer in die hof SAMUEL WALTERS ’n Sestigjarige sakeman van Gouda het Donderdag weer in die Tulbagh-streekshof verskyn vir die verkragting van ’n minderjarige laerskoolleerder. Die beskuldigde is tans op borgtog van R1 000 vrygelaat, met streng voorwaardes. Die beskuldigde, ’n familievriend, ontken alle bewerings. Die ma van die slagoffer (11) wou Donderdag die saak terugtrek teen die beskuldigde omdat sy hom al baie jare “ken”. Die staatsaanklaer het egter geweier en aangedui dat dit ’n staatsaak is en sat die ouer geen bevoegdheid het om so ’n besluit te neem nie. Op die oomblik woon die minderjarige klaer elders, waar sy beskerm word teen verdere blootstelling. Streeklanddros Annemarie Immelman, wat die spesiale streekshofsitting op Tulbagh behartig het, het ook die beskuldigde finaal gewaarsku om ’n prokureur te kry vanweë die erns van die klagte teen hom. Indien hy dit nie doen, nie sal regshulp vir hom aangestel word. Die saak is tot 29 Maart 2015 vir pleit en verhoor uitgestel, waar getuies van maatskaplike dienste ook geroep sal word om hul verslae aan die hof voor te lê.

SURPLUS APPORTIONMENT - UPDATE

As advised in Surplus Communication Number Four, the Trustees have submitted the proposed project plan to the Financial Services Board to complete a Surplus Apportionment Scheme (detailing how the surplus is to be distributed amongst eligible stakeholders). The Actuary appointed by the Fund to assist the Fund with its Surplus Apportionment has analysed the data required for the surplus calculations and has requested that the administrator of the Fund provides additional data in order to complete the surplus apportionment calculations. Since most of the data required were not stored electronically as the data is required from January 1980, the administrator is in the process of extracting the data from paper records which has significantly lengthened the process of finalising the data for the surplus apportionment. The Trustees have thus submitted a revised project plan to the Financial Services Board to complete a Surplus Apportionment Scheme (detailing how the surplus is to be distributed amongst eligible stakeholders).

CELEBRATION: The staff of Desmond Mpilo Tutu Secondary School recently celebrated Teacher's Day at Schoongezicht Restaurant in Paarl.

The Actuary needs to finalise the calculations before the Trustees of the Fund can consider the Surplus Apportionment Scheme. As mentioned earlier, the Actuary has requested additional data required for calculating the proposed distribution of surplus and to identify the members who will be eligible for surplus. Please note that registration as a former member of the Fund is not a guarantee that any surplus payment is due, as this will only be finalised once the authorities have approved the scheme. The Surplus Apportionment Scheme has to be formally approved by the Financial Services Board before any payments can start. This approval process can take many months, and is not likely to be finalised before the end of 2015. There are six main points to understand at this stage: 1. The process is going to take a long time to complete. This is not the fault of the Trustees or the Administrator of the Fund, but simply due to the complexity of all the required steps, as prescribed in legislation. It is not possible at this stage to give an indication of when the process will be completed. 2. It is unlikely that there will be much money, if any, to distribute to active Fund members as former members who did not receive both their and the Employer's contributions when they left the Fund have to be paid before any surplus can be awarded to active members. 3. No cash payments can be made to anyone who is still an active Fund member. 4. No payments will be made until the required approvals from the authorities have been obtained and the surplus process is completed. As the surplus process will not be completed this year no payments to any potentially eligible past members will be done this year. 5. Once the surplus apportionment process has been completed every past member who has registered with the Fund will receive a letter from the Fund advising them whether they have qualified for a surplus benefit or not. 6. Die meubels wat sy salon deur die jare gekenmerk het, staan nog in die vertrek waar hy onlangs vir oulaas van sy ou klante se hare gesny het: Die groot rooi haarkapper-stoel, die tamaai geldregister wat hy jare gelede by ’n bekende winkel op Wellington gekoop het, die twee gerieflike stoepbanke waarop sy klante al die jare hul beurt sit en afwag het en langs die stoel, die ry knippers waarmee hy die dorpsmense se hare geskeer het. “Al die goed sal seker een van die dae weggepak of weggemaak moet word,” sê oom Sakkie en kyk vanuit die hoë rooi stoel na die meubels in die vertrek om hom. “Ons sal seker maar daarvan ontslae moet raak ... Boland Landbou skitter in krieket

Die eerste krieketspan van Boland Landbou het die afgelope kwartaal uitstekende krieket gespeel.

Die span onder leiding van Luke Philander het sover hierdie seisoen 13 wedstryde gespeel en slegs een verloor met goeie oorwinnings oor Wynberg, Boishaai, Potch Volkskool, New Orleans en die Hoërskool Klerksdorp. Die span het slegs teen die Hoërskool Noord Kaap verloor. Uitblinkers vir Boland Landbou was Slabbert la Grange wat reeds 500 lopies dié seisoen aangeteken het. Philander wat ook gekies is vir die Boland o.18 Coca Cola-span het reeds 400 lopies aangeteken wat ’n honderdtal teen New Orleans en ’n skitterbeurt van 75 teen Boishaai insluit. Ander kolwers wat uitblink is Keenan Jones met ’n honderdtal teen Potch Volkskool, Jondré Williams en Louis Frylinck. Die boulers wat die beste gevaar het is Louis Frylinck en die draaiers Jandré Prinsloo en Philander.

Die oorgrote meerderheid van die span speel reeds die afgelope twee seisoene saam wat wys dat hierdie span ’n hegte eenheid is. Die span se sukses kan toegeskryf word aan ’n uitstekende spangees, goeie kapteinskap en dat elkeen in die span sy kant bring. Die skool het die afgelope tyd twee SA krieketspelers opgelewer. Jan Frylinck is gekies vir die SA Skolespan in 2012 en speel tans provinsiale krieket vir Griekwas. Stiaan van Zyl het onlangs saam met die Proteas in Sri Lanka getoer en speel vir die Cobras. ’n Blink toekoms word ook vir die huidige kaptein Luke Philander voorspel. Die skool se krieketgeriewe is onlangs opgeknap en die krieket A-veld by die skool is van die mooiste in die Boland. ’n Nuwe borgskap van KFC het dit ook moontlik gemaak om ’n nuwe elektroniese telbord op te rig. Boland Landbou is uitgenooi om in Januarie aan Jeppe se 150-jarige krieketfees deel te neem waar die span teen KES, Waterkloof en Jeppe te staan sal kom.

KEEP ON SWIMMING: The 14th Annual Winelands Mile Charity swim was held at Calais Wine Estate on Saturday. The beautiful scenery was enjoyed by more than a 100 participants who braved the 1,6 km swim. Chilly conditions could not keep an enthusiastic crowd away while they enjoyed a funfilled day.

Opwindende baanfiets aksie op Faurestraat Indien die eerste baanbyeenkoms van 2014 wat onlangs plaasgevind het as ’n maatstaf gebruik kan word, wag daar hierdie Vrydag weer opwindende fietsry-aksie op die Faurestraat-bane. Die uniekheid van die Paarl byeenkomsisdatditbinneslegs twee ure voltooi word. Die wedrenne is dus kort en spannend met die langste wedren wat oor slegs 25 rondtes beslis word. Die oud-Springbokfietsryer en viermalige wenner van die 25-myl-wedren, Garth Thomas, het ook laat weet hy gaan moontlik die dag bywoon. Nog ’n interessante toevoeging tot die program is dié waar enige fietsryer met ’n padfiets kan deelneem.

Jy hoef ook nie aan ’n klub te behoort nie en inskrywings is slegs R20. Die top-naelryers in die land sal ook meeding met die vinnigste juniors oor slegs 400 meter. Die naelryers sal ook aan ’n Keirin-wedren deelneem waar die pas deur ’n bromponie vir die eerste drie rondtes aangegee word. Die progressiewe punte/uitvalwedren behoort ook een van die hoogtepunte te wees van die aand. Die dag begin om 19:30 en sal dien dan as goeie voorbereiding vir die Boxing Day-byeenkoms op 26 Desember. Braaigeriewe sal ook beskikbaar wees.
