Verdagte verskyn in hof oor rivierlyk

It has come to the attention of many, that we often plague our minds with the opinions of others. Families, friendships and communi ties are often rocked by the harmful words or citations that others speak. We should learn to bite our tongues before saying something out of anger and pride, entertaining sensa tionalist accusations. No one likes to be caught in between a “he said, she said.” Facts are often misleading, but rumours on the other hand whether true or false are revealing. ) Everyday should be Mandela Day, we all enjoy the excitement around doing good in honour of the late legend, imagine if we prac tised these deeds everyday.

Should Paarlites set aside 67 minutes for Mandela? “Nelson Mandela fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67 minutes. “We would be honoured if such a day could serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace and reconciliation.” This statement to promote the Mandela Day campaign invites the world to get together to honour the legacy of this great statesman on 18 July, his birthday. On this day, participating individuals and businesses will devote 67 minutes to helping people who are less fortunate. Even after Mandela’s death, many Paarlites and others around the world will still spend 67 minutes extending a helping hand to the needy. In so doing, they will be keeping his memory alive. Paarl Post spoke to some locals and asked them what Mandela Day meant to them.

Michel Jacobs; “To be totally honest, not much, it is just another day.”

Alicia Eksteen; “You must do something for 67 minutes to help oth er people. But I have not yet participated.”

Philemon Gwinyai Sit hole; “Like other public holidays it is meant to serve as a reminder, to those of us who so of ten forget, that the free dom we enjoy today did not come for free, or was not simply handed over and that it had to be fought for by Man dela and others. But I feel that it is quickly los ing the significance it previously had.”

Auviane Ontong; “Man dela Day is a day that should be observed eve ry day, every minute, as often as we can. Charity starts at home.”

Liezel Möller: “To pick just one day is silly. You need to do something good when ever you can see that it is necessary.”

Tian Capes: “ It is a day to give back to the community, especially those who are less for tunate.”

LoganPearl Williams; “Mandela was a living legend and it’s only fair that we pay tribute to him.””

Possible Facebook scam hits Paarl Unsuspecting Paarlites may also be victim to an alleged Facebook scam during which especially ‘older women’ have been defrauded. Paarl Post has received information that at least two local women have been scammed out of thousands of rands after befriending men on the social media platform, Facebook. According to reliable information received, these women where made promises of romance from foreigners who wanted to visit them in South Africa. But they needed money to make their way to this country ‘while they waited for their investments to be cashed in’. And in Somerset West a similar case of such fraud is unravelling in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court. This after a Somerset West woman was defrauded of about R240 000 in just over a month in an alleged Facebook scam. Evidence of the scam was presented in the bail application of Pius Emokpe (37) on Monday 30 June. Emokpe was arrested by the Somerset West Police at a flat in Gordon’s Bay on 20 February on a charge of fraud pertaining to the depositing of the above amount into his Standard Bank account. According to Somerset West police spokesperson, Sgt Suzan Jantjies, Emokpe targets middle-aged women on Facebook by setting up various profiles. It was Emokpe’s alter ego, Charlie Legget, who the

54-year-old woman had fallen prey to between 7 May to 12 June last year. Legget won the woman’s trust after he presented himself as a successful Texan engineer residing in Bloubergstrand. He said he was a widower whose wife had died of cancer and also a single parent to a young daughter. On 7 May, while allegedly in America, Legget first made telephonic contact with the woman informing her that he was robbed and asked her to transfer R10 000 to him via a friend’s Standard Bank account. A week later, after a part had allegedly broken at the oil rig and needed to be fixed at a cost of R51 364, he allegedly contacted her again, asking for more money. After this incident he also contacted her on four occasions, requesting about R220 000 in total. The woman apparently borrowed money from her mother and used this and money from an investment, to deposit another R5 000 into the account on 12 June. Later, the same day, she received a call from Standard Bank’s fraud department informing her that she may have been a victim of a scam. * Police suspect these scams may be the work of a syndicate and are requesting all possible victims to phone the investigating officer Sgt Nolan Fisher on 021 850 1325/1300 or 1301. All information will be treated confidentially. * Source: Delia Brinkhuis, District Mail

New face welcomed at Paarl Police MARYKE SWART Paarl Police Station recently welcomed its new commander in chief, Brigadier Vuyisile Ncata. Ncata (41) who previously headed up the Langa Police Station, joined the Paarl team at the beginning of this month. His appointment comes after the sudden death of the former commander of the Paarl Police, Brigadier Leon Grobbelaar in January. Ncata grew up in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth and completed his police training at Hammanskraal. He has been in the service for the past 20 years. Ncata says his transition to Paarl has been nothing but rewarding. “This is a lucky station in that there is enough manpower and there are people with many years of service and experience working here,” he said. “Everyone is very friendly and I have a team that will cooperate and travel the jour-

Power generation: what to know The continued electricity and energy supply crisis in South Africa has necessitated consumers to come up with creative and more cost effective ways to save electricity. It is in this spirit that the Drakenstein Municipality has taken up the challenge to save energy and find alternative ways of providing sustainable energy. At a provincial and national government level, municipalities and consumers have been encouraged to save electricity to prevent Eskom from instituting load shedding. The focus must be moved to renewable types of energy for electricity generation for example wind, sun, hydro, biofuels, wave and tidal energy sources, the municipality says. “Drakenstein Municipality is eagerly moving down this path to reduce its reliance on non-renewable energy sources by the current investigation of the installation of a Waste-to-Energy Plant,” says Deon Louw, executive manager for infrastructure services at the municipality. “The aim is to reduce the quantity of waste dumped at landfill sites by 90% and also generate approximately 10% of renewable electricity, thereby achieving our quota of 10% per year.” The municipality also hopes to increased this quota to 20% by introducting wind-generated and photo voltaic (electricity from the sun) generated electricity. Louw added that the municipality has now taken another step in the facilitation of more effective electricity use by allowing all types of consumers to generate their own electricity through the use of renewable energy sources such as wind or sun powered generators. “The council has formally accepted a set of electricity tariffs whereby electricity customers may generate electricity into the municipal electricity grid with the use of wind electricity generators, photo voltaic (PV) sun electricity generators or similar electricity generators operating on a renewable basis of electricity energy generation.”

Electricity tariffs, for this purpose of customers wanting to purchase as well as sell electricity, have been designed to allow the municipality to generate sufficient funds for operations and maintenance of electricity networks, and also allow customers to buy and sell electricity energy at the same tariff. Special meters will be installed, which will measure the amount of electricity consumed and the amount of electricity generated, separately. Customers will be allowed to build up a credit on accounts for electricity generated, in excess of own use, within any municipal financial year, but the credit will be zeroed at the end of each financial year. “Special power purchase agreements (PPA) will be entered into with customers wishing to only generate electricity at a large scale,” Louw explained. He warned however that due to the inherent danger of working with electricity, special safety features will have to be adhered to. Customers wishing to co-generate will be expected to pay a co-generation connection charge in order for the municipality to register the co-generation source, fit the special meter described above and to formally be allowed to co-generate electricity. The Municipal Electricity Supply Bylaw is currently being adjusted to allow the installation of such a system as the previous bylaw disallowed such an operation. For further detail regarding the above, contact Willie Albertyn of the Drakenstein Municipality at 021 807 4663.

churches where he spoke to members and urged them to assist the police by reporting crime. He said he intentionally chose churches as a meeting place. He also plans to address learners at schools and hold Imbizos, specifically in areas where there is a lot of crime. Ncata says people should also get to know their neighbours and become more involved in their neighbourhoods. He says Whatsapp groups, for example, are a good way to be in contact with one’s neighbours and report any suspicious activity in the area. “We need to mobilise the community, the police can never do it alone.” He also encourages the community to make use of the suggestion box that was put up at the station and to attend CPF meetings. “The community must be the eyes and ears for criminal activities, but also for the police, with regard to corruption and officers who are not doing their job.” Ncata celebrates his 42nd birthday tomorrow.

Briewe Letters

17 July, 2014

Is 67 minute werklik genoeg? Môre is Kersfees!

Dis maar my beskeie mening. Organiseer ons ’n gig of twee?

As jy nie daarna omsien nie, gaan dit nie bly leef nie.” So, as jy weet jy het talent, doen so voort! Doen tog net iets.

Will anyone act against these unruly cyclists? Last week I coincidentally had two unpleasant experiences with cyclists. It is evident that they do not follow the rules of the road, and no one is keeping an eye on them either. At the four-way-stop at Breda and Van der Lingen Streets, a cyclist nearly rode into my car. I had come down Van der Lingen, stopped and all the other vehicles where following the correct stop and go procedures at the stop street. Just as I wanted to turn into Breda Street, as it was my turn, a cyclist leisurely drove across the stop street, not adhering to any rules of the road.

Then in Main Road, I drove past a cyclist who was also leisurely riding on the wrong side of the road against oncoming traffic, taking no care or note of vehicles around him. And just take a look how often

cyclists also drive straight past red traffic lights. And these incidents are not in secluded back roads, but on main thoroughfares in Paarl, and no where is a traffic officer in sight. In any case, I would actually have liked to see whether a traffic officer would have apprehended cyclists who were breaking the rules of the road. The problem is also that if I had to accidentally knock down such a cyclist, I would probably be the one to blame, even when I am following the rules of the road.

P. LESSING PAARL

vasgestel waar my ouma-grootjie se graf is. Baie dankie, dit was regtig gaaf: min woorde, maar so opreg.

Lawenforcement nonexistent in Paarl I agree whole-heartedly about the chaos on Paarl and surrounds “death roads”. When is this going to end? I am convinced that this tendency of reckless driving has bred due to lack of law-enforcement. In all my years of driving the

roads in and around Paarl (21 to be exact) I have never seen, never mind been stopped, at a roadblock. Not that I am one of those who disregard the laws of the road, but this just goes to prove that law-enforcement basically does not exist

in Paarl. Also, take the continuous illegal street racing which takes place – the public is just laughing at the various law-enforcement units.

Paarl needs a descent festival I once again attended the Franschhoek Bastille Festival on Saturday, and wow, was it as per usual an entertaining affair, attracting thousands of visitors. I could not however help but wonder why Paarl has for many years been unable to provide the town with a similar event from

which the entire town could benefit, at the same time drawing much needed tourism to the area. We have just as lavish a history as Franschhoek and perhaps an even more beautiful historic centre: Main Road from the Berg River Boulevard until Market Street. Previous organisers of festivals

have only organised such events for own gain and not for the benefit of the rest of Paarl residents and businesses, so they failed. Could someone please wake up and give Paarl an event that we can all be proud of, part of, and enjoy.

TANDYLEE MARINUS Franschhoek truly lived up to its name as the “French corner” as the town was decked with an array of blue, white and red this past weekend. The annual Franschhoek Bastille Festival from 12 to 13 July boasted an array of all things French and celebrated the Valley’s centuries-old French Huguenot heritage. Locals and visitors indulged in award winning wine and various gourmet street food made by Franschhoek’s well-known chefs. According to organisers, the weekend proved to be a huge success. Now in its 21st year, the festival moved to a bigger and better ven-

ue, the French Huguenot Monument. This allowed more people to enjoy the offerings in the popular food and wine marquee. A social calendar highlight, not only did the town attracts thousands of visitors during the weekend, but the marquee attracted just under 5 000 visitors on the Saturday. The weather also played its role in providing a gorgeous winter’s day on the Saturday. There was a smaller crowd on Sunday and although the weather was a lot colder and the rain clouds loomed festival-goers’ spirits would not be dampened. The Bastille Festival refers to the Storming of the Bastille in Paris, France, which was a turning point in the French Revolution.

Entries open for Green Wine Entries are open for the sixth Nedbank Green Wine Awards. This is the only wine competition in Africa that acknowledges and honours wine producers farming for the future and wines that are made in an environmentally conscious and sustainable manner. Fiona McDonald, former Wine editor and judge for several prestigious local and international competitions, will once again head the panel. She will be joined by judges Christian Eedes (former Wine editor and judge for the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, among others), François Rautenbach (director of Singita Premier Wine), Winnie Bowman (Cape Wine Master and regular judge for Veritas and Platter’s South Af-

rica Wine Guide) and new panel member Nomonde Khubeka (former KWV winemaker and judge for SA Young Wine Show and SAA’s Trophy Wines). Judging begins on 28 July, with the winners announced at an awards function on 16 October. Immediately thereafter, wine lovers will be able to view the full results at www.greenwineawards.com and purchase certain winning wines at select Checkers outlets. The Nedbank Green Wine Awards was launched in response to increased popularity and consumer interest in this category. Nedbank was the natural partner for the awards because of its ongoing involvement with conservation projects. The bank’s support for the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) through the WWF-Nedbank Green

Trust has been in effect since the organisation’s inception in 2004. The awards focus on three categories: best wine from organically grown grapes, best BWI wines and best environmental and farming practices. In the first two categories, producers are asked to submit wines that are made either from organically grown grapes or are produced by a BWI member farm. The wines are divided into categories according to grape variety or style and tasted blind. The objective of the best environmental and farming practices award is to recognise the effort SA wineries are making to farm in a way that is sustainable in the long term. Contact the project manager Kathryn Frew at 021 530 3308 or kathryn.frew@ ramsaymedia.co.za.

Grande Provence strikes gold at the Decanter world wine awards Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate, situated in Franschhoek, part of The Huka Retreats, proudly announced that its Sauvignon Blanc 2013 has been awarded a gold medal at the 2014 Decanter world wine awards. Only 3% of entries achieved this. This award is an addition to the very many awards the Grande Provence wines have received over the years. General manager and celebrat-

ed winemaker Karl Lambour, comments: “It is a huge honour to receive such a prestigious international award and to be acknowledged for the work that goes into creating beautiful wines that can be enjoyed by experienced and emerging wine lovers. “We look forward to welcoming guests to try all our wines in the Tasting Room or beautifully paired with our new winter menu in the Restaurant.”

ORGANIC WINE WINNERS: Sonop Organic Wine Farm in the Perdeberg, this year excelled in Germany at the Inter national Organic Wine Awards 2014. The cellar was award ed with a Grande Gold Medal, as well as two gold and three silver medals for six wines that were entered. An inter national jury of professionals scored the wines according to colour, bouquet, body, fruit, acidity, aroma, tannins and ag ing potential. Wines must be produced 100% from organic grown grapes and must be in accordance with all wine laws, meeting the national requirements as well as those of the Eu ropean Union. Here is the proud team from left, Johan Bar nard (farm manager and viticulturist), Sophie Germanier (co owner and executive director of Sonop Wine Estate) and Jaco Marais (winemaker). The winning wines were all from Sonop‘ 2014 vintage.

WP crowned the unofficial champions of the Academy Week Western Province beat KwaZuluNatal in the final game of the u. 18 Coca-Cola Academy in front of a packed and very partisan crowd at HTS Drosdy in Wellington recently. Western Province got off to a very good start and immediately put KwaZulu-Natal under pressure. It did not take long before Province’s wing Andre Manuel broke through the KZN defence to score the first try of the game. Province found themselves back on their opponents’ tryline directly from the kickoff, and with the defence in tatters, Michael Meyer ran through the centre field defence and broke 4 tackles to score their second try. Up to this point KwaZulu-Natal had only touched the ball to restart the game. Province’s dominance was complete. Once again the Cape side broke easily through the KwaZulu-Natal defence with a quick backline move that finished close to the right hand corner. Province lock, Sybrand Du Toit, was in close support of his backs, and he dug the ball out and went over for his team’s 3rd try. The Sharks finally got some possession and took the game into the Western Province half. This brought about a slight pause in the scoring. WP regrouped and seemed to take a breather. This did not last long and they scored again in the 30th minute

This was the last try of the first half and Province went into the break 24-0 up. The second half started the same as the first, with KwaZulu-Natal missing tackles and Western Province easily breaking through to score through yet another try this time through their prop Edward Marais. Hayden Tharratt scored a consolation try for KwaZulu-Natal in the 46th minute. Province brought on most of their bench for the rest of the game and it did not stop the scoring Taigh Schoor

ran in their last try in the 66th minute to round off a game of complete dominance. The other unbeaten teams this week were the Gauteng Lions, Boland XV and Blue Valke. ) Players from Paarl who played for the Western Province team include: Carlton Fortune, Danrich Visagie, Hugo Vlok and Bertus Smith all from Boland Landbou with Derrick Marais and Rayhann Lombaard from Paarl Boys High. Players from Paarl Gimnasium included Joshua Vermeulen, Taigh Schoor and Johan Visser.
