Die voorval het vroeg Saterdagoggend (14 Maart) in Klein Drakensteinweg plaasgevind. Jacquin (Jackie) van Rooyen (27), van Magnolia-woonstelle, het op die sypaadjie in Klein Drakensteinweg by sy vriende gestaan en kuier toe hy deur ’n BMW-motor getref is. Na bewering was die ongeluk die gevolg van ’n onwettige straatwedren tussen twee familielede. Omstreeks 01:00 het ’n wit BMW en ’n wit City Golf in ’n oostelike rigting in Klein Drakensteinweg ver-

moedelik resies gejaag. Volgens ’n ooggetuie, Marlo Davids (22), het hy gesien hoe die BMW-motor van Mervin Andrews glo twee keer daardie nag resies gejaag het. “Die bestuurder van die BMW en die bestuurder van die Golf het teen mekaar resies gejaag in Klein Drakensteinweg. Die bestuurder van die Golfie het toe naby die tandarts in die straat remme getrek, terwyl die BMW se spoed vermeerder is. “Ons vriende het op die sypaadjie gesit en gesels toe ons sien hoe die BMW buite beheer raak. Ons het almal soos sardientjies uitmekaargespat, maar Jackie is hard deur die motor getref. “Jackie het toe eers teen nog ’n motor geval en daarna op die grond beland. Die bestuurder van die BMW het gestop, uit sy motor gespring en weggehol. Toe die polisie

en ambulans op die toneel aankom, was hy nêrens te vinde nie.” vertel Davids. ’n Insleepdiens wat op die toneel was, het toe die BMW tot voor sy eienaar se woning in Magnolia-woonstelle gesleep. Andrews het Maandag 16 Maart in die Paarl-landdroshof verskyn op aanklag van roekelose en nalatige bestuur. Klein Drakensteinweg is berug vir sy straatrenne. Dit is ook bekend dat hul ondersteuners op die stoepe van die Ivanhoe Park-gebou vergader om die resies dop te hou. Wellington is gearing up to welcome Absa Cape Epic Mountain Bike riders and supporters in style when the race passes through this town during the weekend of 20-21 March. On 20 March a huge procession is being organised in Wellington, starting at the Welge-leë Plein, all the way up Church Street and returning to the shopping centre. The Wellington Klopse, drum majorettes, the horse brigade from the SAPS and locals on decorated bicycles, dressed in green and white costumes, will all welcome the riders. This is taking place around lunch time, just prior to the cyclists’ arrival – scheduled around 14:00. The cyclists end the day at the race village at CPUT Sport grounds in Wellington. On Stage 6, 21 March, they set off through the treacherous Welvanpas trails in Wellington before they end the day back at CPUT. Stage 7, 22 March, sees the cyclists head off through towards Paardeberg before they finish their journey at Meernedal Wine Estate in Durbanville. There are various venues in and around Wellington from where to enjoy the live action. Bosman Family Vineyards will be hosting a Bubbles and Breakfast on 21 March between 07:30 and 12:00 in celebration of this great sporting event. Get a closer look at the cyclists, as Bosman Family Vineyards is one of the Wel-

lington watering points. Welbedacht’s No.6 Restaurant will also be open for a special Epic breakfast throughout the weekend. The restaurant will also be providing Epic Specials for the full duration of the ABSA Cape Epic. Linton Park is offering a burger breakfast, MCC and orange juice with wine tastings starting at 09:00. They will also be creating a welcome fly-over for all to see and enjoy. Doolhof will also be organising a special breakfast, wine tasting and a fly-over. Val du Charron also welcomes the Cape Epic cyclists and visitors. The race is passing directly through the working farm and visitors can enjoy breakfast with stunning views. Wine tasting will be freely available, but this March tastings are particularly special at Val du Charron. The picturesque Aux de Hex Boutique Hotel, which offers spectacular views of The Hawekwa Mountains, will also be hosting breakfasts. Ayama Wines in the Voor Paardeberg near Wellington is also a viewing point as Epic riders pass through the Paardeberg on Sunday 22 March. Various scenic spots along the mountain side are set aside for spectators, and it is suggested that they arrive from 08:00-09:00 to settle in for the day, as the riders should come past from 10:30. Italian-style brunch boxes, wine, cold drinks and water will be on sale.

Italian cyclist injured in Franschhoek bus accident dies One of the cyclists who was critically injured in the recent bus accident on Franschhoek Pass, has died of her injuries. Linda Scattolin, an Italian, and fellow cyclist, Edith Niederfriniger, a former European champion, were training on the pass on Saturday 7 March when they were hit by a bus transporting players and supporters of the Franschhoek Rugby Club. Initial reports suggest the brakes of the bus may have failed.

Two rugby players on the bus – Russel Riffel (23) and Denzil Boonzaaier (20) – and a supporter, Abraham Lybrand (55) died on the scene. A total of 23 people were injured. Scattolin was airlifted to Groote Schuur Hospital, where she was treated in the intensive care unit. Hospital spokesman Alaric Jacobs confirmed that Scattolin died early last Friday. Niederfriniger is still recovering from her

injuries at Paarl MediClinic. Enquiries at the hospital regarding her conditionwerereferredtothefamily’slawyer and spokesman, Gavin Roberts, who could not be reached for comment. Both athletes reportedly arrived in South Africa in November to prepare for the Ironman competition in Port Elizabeth in April. Scattolin is said to have hoped for a podium position.

Die pa van ’n dogter van 17 maande sou na verwagting gister om borgtog aansoek doen nadat hy verlede week weens haar dood in hegtenis geneem is. Lee-Heino Goosen (19) van Ou Ruigtevleiplaas, Wellington is verlede Dinsdag in hegtenis geneem nadat hy na bewering op 1 Maart sy dogter, Shandre Lee-Ann Goosen, sonder toestemming by haar ma Chantelle (ook Goosen) se huis op die Voorspoed-plaas gaan haal en na sy huis geneem het, waar sy later dood verklaar is. Nadat Goosen met die kind weg is, het Chantelle glo ’n klag by die Wellington-polisie ingedien en ’n soektog na die vermiste paar is op

tou gesit. Polisiebeamptes het Goosen in ’n veld op die plaas gevind waar hy glo met sy bewustelose dogter in sy arms gesit het. Ambulanspersoneel is na die toneel ontbied en het die peuter dood verklaar. Goosen het na bewering aan die polisie gesê hy het Shandre op ’n muur naby die spoorlyn neergesit om vir haar water te kry, en sy toe daarvan afgeval het. ’n Geregtelike doodsondersoek is aanvanklik ingestel, maar nadat verskeie kneuswonde regoor haar lyf gekry is, is ’n moorddossier geopen. Goosen het aanvanklik Woensdagoggend aangedui dat hy nie borgtog gaan vra nie maar later glo van plan verander. Teen druktyd het die saak nog nie voorgekom nie.

Hugenoter lei wêreld se eerste suksesvolle penisoorplanting ENGELA DUVENAGE ’n Voormalige onderhoofseun van Hoerskool Hugenote op Wellington, uroloog prof. André van der Merwe, was vandeesweek behoorlik in die internasionale kollig as leier van die wêreld se heel eerste suksesvolle penisoorplantingsoperasie. Van die New York Times tot CNN en BBC het al oor dié wêreldeerste berig – een wat aan die ontvanger ’n volle werkende geslagsorgaan besorg het. Dit beteken dat die man nou weer soos normaal kan urineer én pa word. Die 21-jarige ontvanger se eie moes twee jaar gelede geamputeer word nadat ’n lewensbedreigende infeksie ingetree het ná sy tradisionele besnydenis. Die operasie is reeds in Desember uitgevoer. Dit het sowat 10 ure geneem om die liggaamsdeel korrek van die ontslape skenker te oes, en nege ure om dit te heg. Sedert die sukses daarvan verlede week op ’n perskonferensie bekend gemaak is, moes Van der Merwe behoorlik bontstaan om die navrae van joernaliste van alle uithoeke van die wêreld te hanteer. Die operasie was deel van ’n proefstudie om ’n prosedure vir penisoorplantings te ontwikkel wat in ’n tipiese Suid-Afrikaanse hospitaalteater uitgevoer kan word. Daar is ’n groot behoefte in SuidAfrika aan hierdie tipe prosedures aangesien minstens 250 jong mans jaarliks hul penisse verloor as tradisionele besnydenisse verkeerd sou loop. Die prosedure kan selfs uitgebrei word na mans wat hul penisse verloor het

Van der Merwe reken die operasie sal ook eendag hoop kan bring vir babaseuntjies wie se besnydenisse weens mediese of geloofsredes soms skeef loop. “Hierdie operasie sal dus ook op hulle gedoen kan word wanneer hulle eendag groot is,” het hy aan die Paarl Post vertel. Van der Merwe het as koshuisseun uit Sutherland van 1983 tot 1987 aan Hugenote skoolgegaan, in die geselskap van sy ouer broer Cobus. As kranige sportman en diskuskampioen het hy die Westelike

Hy het as tiener reeds geweet dat hy medies wil studeer en is Maties toe. “Maar mens weet nie noodwendig op skool al dat jy wil spesialiseer en ’n uroloog word nie,” vertel hy oor dié wye mediese spesialisasieveld. Van der Merwe het onder meer opleiding in Engeland ontvang voordat hy in 2000 na Suid-Afrika teruggekeer het. Vandag is hy ’n medeprofessor en hoof van die Afdeling Urologie by die Tygerbergkampus. Hy het reeds ses kwalifikasies agter sy naam. Die mees onlangse daarvan – ’n MSc in Kliniese Epidemiologie – het hy in Desember ontvang. Hy het ook al ’n handboek vir uroloë geskryf. Van der Merwe vertel dat om ’n skenker te vind een van die groot uitdagings van die studie was. “Die helde in hierdie storie vir my is die skenker en sy familie. Hulle het die lewens van baie mense gered omdat hulle die hart, longe, niere, lewer, vel, korneas en die penis geskenk het,” het Van der Merwe in ’n persverklaring gesê. Die beplanningswerk het reeds in 2010 begin. Die tegnieke wat gebruik is, is geskoei op dié van die eerste gesigsoorplanting. Weens vele ander besigheidsbelange, het ek dit goedgedink om eerder my aandag op ander meer winsgewende besigheidsgeleenthede toe te spits. “Waar een deur toe gaan, gaan daar duisende ander oop”, sê ek altyd. In Franschhoek staan ’n man tereg op aanklag van die kweek van dagga nadat 13 daggabome en 10 sakkies dagga na bewering agter sy huis in Mooiwater, Groendal, gevind is. Paul de Bruyn (49) is op 13 Maart in hegtenis geneem tydens ’n gesamentlike operasie deur polisiekantore in die Stellenbosch-gebied. Hy het Maandag in die plaaslike landdroshof verskyn en is op borgtog van R300 vrygelaat. Die saak is vir twee weke uitgestel. Die spoorwegpolisie op Klapmuts het ook Vrydag groot sukses gehad toe hulle bykans 2 kg dagga op ’n trein in die gebied gevind het. Volgens inligting het spoorwegpolisiele-

de drie mans opgemerk wat verdag gelyk het. Die mans het twee sportsakke by hulle gehad. Die sakke is deursoek en 1,97 kg dagga is gevind. L. Freddie, J. Jansen en F. Marbe (voorname onbekend), onderskeidelik van Kraaifontein en Klapmuts, is in hegtenis geneem en het Maandag weens die besit van dwelms in die Paarl-landdroshof verskyn. Die saak is tot ’n latere datum uitgestel. Die mans is uit op borgtog. Tussen 18 Februarie en 8 Maart het die spoorwegpolisie talle suksesse gehad met die vind van dwelms op treine. In dié tydperk is 18 mense in hegtenis geneem vir dwelms op treine tussen Kraaifontein en Klapmuts en altesaam 1, 56 kg dagga, tik en Mandrax is gekonfiskeer. * Police have confiscated large amounts of dagga in various operations.

Robbers target railway station The Mbekweni Police are in search of three suspects believed to have robbed and hijacked an employee of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) at the Mbekweni railway station. According to Mbekweni Police spokesperson, Sergeant Nceba Vanqa, three men approached two security officials stationed at the railway station at around 03:00 on Thursday 12 March and forced them into the guard room where they were handcuffed. When the supervisor (55) of Prasa arrived to open the ticket office, a security official was sent to open

up the gate for him. While waiting for her, the supervisor told police he was approached by one of the suspects after which the other two suspects joined them threatening him with firearms. He was instructed to keep quiet. A warning shot was allegedly fired after which the suspects took his cellphone, returning his sim card, also robbing him of R200 from his wallet before demanding the keys to his vehicle. They fled the scene in his Black Toyota Yaris (registration no. CJ 32320) valued at R159 000. A hand radio was also stolen. No injuries were reported.

DEVIDEAN MOSES Drie gewapende rowers word steeds gesoek nadat hulle ’n groot bedrag kontant en sigarette gesteel het. Volgens die Paarl-Oos-polisiewoordvoerder, het die voorval verlede Woensdag (11 Maart) omstreeks 12:05 by ’n winkel op die hoek van Ambagsvallei- en Pedrostraat plaasgevind. “Die drie mans het vermoedelik die sigaret-paneelwa agtervolg tot by die winkel in Paarl-Oos. Die drywer van die paneelwa het toe uitgeklim om besigheid binne die winkel te gaan doen. Terwyl hy binne die winkel was, het die drie gewapende mans die winkel binnegekom en vuurwapens op die winkelassistent en die drywer gerig.

Een van die rowers het die paneelwa-drywer van sy sleutels, ’n sak met ongeveer R8 500 daarin asook sy BlackBerry Curve selfoon beroof, waarna die verdagtes na buite gegaan en in die paneelwa gevlug het,” vertel die polisiewoordvoerder. Die polisie is na die toneel ontbied en het die verdagtes agternagesit. Hulle het binne enkele minute daarin geslaag om die paneelwa in Regentstraat, Dal Josafat, op te spoor, maar die verdagtes het toe reeds ontsnap met ’n onbepaalde hoeveelheid sigarette. Niemand is in hegtenis geneem nie. ’n Klag van gewapende roof word deur die polisie ondersoek. Enigiemand met inligting oor die verdagtes, kan die polisie se tolvrynommer 10111 bel.

Vyf maande swanger vrou verkrag ’n Vyf maande swanger vrou van Loverslane, Paarl-Oos is na bewering Saterdag (14 Maart) deur haar kêrel aangerand en verkrag. Volgens ’n polisiewoordvoerder van Paarl-Oos was die 32-jarige vrou in hul opslaanhut in Loverslane reeds aan die slaap toe haar kêrel haar beskuldig van owerspel. “Volgens die klaer het haar kêrel haar beskuldig van owerspel en slegte bewerings teenoor haar gemaak. Hy was vermoedelik kwaad en het haar met ’n ketting

aanhoudend geslaan. Die weerlose vrou het probeer wegkom. Hy het toe haar nagklere van haar liggaam geskeur en haar verkrag,” sê die polisiewoordvoerder. Die verdagte het op Woensdag 18 Maart in die Paarl-landdroshof op aanklag van verkragting verskyn. Inwoners rondom rivier is raadop FRANS LE ROUX Sportklubs soos die Paarl-kanoklub, krieketklub en muurbalklub is raadop met die hoeveelheid onwettige inwoners wat hul persele binnedring, besteel en vadalisme pleeg. Nie net dit nie, maar die hele oewer van die Bergrivier in die gebied word deur hierdie booswigte vervuil en ontsier. Die Paarl-kanoklub is bekend vir sy uitstekende werk in die gemeenskap deurdat kinders vanuit alle agtergronde topgehalte roei-opleiding ontvang. Die kanoklub is die afgelope tyd swaar getref deur inbrake en saakbeskadiging. Dan is daar ook hul nuwe klubhuis aan die oorkant van Markstraat wat weens ’n betaalkwessie half klaar gebou is. Die voorsitter van die Paarl-kanoklub, Hannes van der Westhuyzen, vertel van hul probleme. “Ons sukkel byna daagliks met die haweloses wat skade aan ons perseel aanrig. So byna ’n jaar terug

How does the Epic affect our town Even if you have never been on a bicycle, or do not have the slightest interest in cycling, you should sit up and take notice of the ABSA Cape Epic. In its short 12-year history, this tough eight-day event has not only been a major business success, but an internationally acclaimed adventure as well, which sees all available entries sold out online in less than one minute. What makes the Cape Epic so special is that it is a proudly South African idea. Every year, participants, fans and the media eagerly await the announcement of the new route. This year was no exception and locals from Drakenstein will be able to enjoy the Epic on their doorstep once again. From a local point of view, Wellington is the place to be this weekend. International news crews and riders from all corners of the globe will gather there to enjoy true South African hospitality. When you greet a foreigner in a shop or give someone directions, who knows, you may just have reassured these fans of the Epic to return to Wellington. Toe ’n lastige buurman laat weet dat hy, danksy die Internet nog steeds op Google die motors agter die hoë muur kan sien, het die eienaar ’n tamaai bord opgerig waarop daar staan: “Moenie loer nie! Kyk voor jou in die pad!”

Is hierdie toilet-belasting regverdig? Ek sal graag wil weet wat die opname van die aantal toiletpunte by gewone woonhuise wil bereik (Paarl Post 5 Maart). In baie van ons ouer mense se huise is daar twee tot drie toilette en dié word daagliks “miskien” twee keer gebruik deur slegs twee persone. Daar is mense in minder gegoede buurte waar tot 10 mense (en soms meer) ’n huis met net een toilet deel. Nou wil ek weet: wat het woonhuis-toilet-belasting te doen met die aantal toilette per woning? Nee, ek dink dit gaan nie oor die aantal toilette per woning nie, maar wel oor die aantal mense op die perseel wat hierdie geriewe gebruik. So word ons al weer van ons geld beroof om ander te help.

BELASTINGBETALER PAARL

Die munisipale bestuurder, Johann Mettler, reageer: Hierdie inligting is belangrik om die korrekte aanslag vir elke huishouding te bepaal en seker te maak die munisipaliteit beskik oor akkurate data. Die getalle word op ons finansiële stelsel aangeteken en geverifieer. Hierdie verifiëringsproses word geloods ten einde seker te maak dat persone die korrekte heffings betaal

om toekomstige ouditnavrae te voorkom. Die riooltarief word bepaal volgens die aantal rioolpunte op die erf. Die munisipaliteit kan nie die riooltarief bepaal volgens die aantal inwoners op ’n erf of die hoeveelheid mense wat ’n spesifieke punt gebruik nie, want dit kan nie akkuraat vasgestel of gekontroleer word nie. Dit is standaardpraktyk vir munisipaliteite. Munisipale veldwerkers gaan elke perseel besoek. Die publiek word versoek om hierdie veldwerkers toegang te gee tot hul perseel sodat die bevestiging gedoen kan word. Elke veldwerker word voorsien van ’n munisipale identiteitskaart en moet dit ten toon stel. Vir enige navrae oor die egtheid van die veldwerker se identiteit, bel 021 807 6350.

Lig, laat sak of vat weg daardie bord wat die pad N1 toe wys Ek het onlangs in die Paarl Post navraag gedoen oor die padveranderings rondom die ou Rembrandt-gebou. Ek en my vriend Klaas verstaan egter nog steeds nie die munisipaliteit se verduideliking van die kwessie nie, maar dit daar gelaat. ’n Mens kan seker aan alles gewoond raak: die Paarl het slegs drie verkeersirkels, maar ons as dorp vind die probleemvrye gebruik daarvan steeds haas onmoontlik.

Ek glo dit is hoofsaaklik toe te skryf aan die onderlinge inkonsekwentheid van die vloei rondom al drie die sirkels en dan natuurlik ook die basiese onverdraagsaamheid en ongeduld van die meeste padgebruikers, myself inkluis. Ek skryf egter vandag nie om te kla nie, maar wel om Drakensteinmunisipaliteit geluk te wens en ook te bedank vir die aanbring van pyle by die verkeersligte op die hoek van Bergrivier Boulevard in die rigting

Toename in verkeer by ontwikkeling pla As inwoners van Bergrivierstraat en die ander omliggende strate om die nuwe Rembrandtontwikkeling is ons bekommerd oor die toename van verkeer daar en veral swaarvoertuie wat dikwels baie vinnig ry. Ons kinders is gewoond aan ’n rustige buurt, maar nou het dinge drasties verander. Ons is regtigwaar baie bekommerd dat ’n persoon, veral ’n kind, nog om gery gaan word hieroor. Ons het al met die verkeersafdeling hieroor gepraat, maar niemand beantwoord ons vrae nie. Ons vra dat padtekens en spoedhobbels aangebring word om die area te beveilig en dat die publiek veilig hier moet bestuur.

BEKOMMERDE INWONERS PAARL

Munisipale bestuurder, Johann Mettler, verduidelik: Met enige groot ontwikkeling, is daar ’n toename in verkeer, veral

swaarvoertuie. Tydens die ontwikkelingsvoorstelle word daar ook ’n verkeersimpakstudie gedoen waarvolgens daar voorsiening gemaak word om die bestaande infrastruktuur op te gradeer, indien daar gevind word dat dit nodig is. Die opgraderings wat aanbeveel is vir hierdie ontwikkeling word nog geïmplementeer en sal die verkeersvloei verbeter. Tydens die konstruksietydperk van so ’n projek is daar ’n toename aan swaarvoertuie op die pad. Die situasie rakende verkeerskalmering kan eers weer ondersoek word ná die voltooiing van die projek, wanneer die abnormale verkeersvloei gestop het. Indien daar dan gevind word dat kalmeringsmaatreëls nodig is, sal dit aangespreek word. Wanneer die verkeersdepartement dan ook vind dat voertuie, insluitend trokke, te vinnig in dorpsgebiede ry, sal daar diensooreenkomstig opgetree word.

Hoekom laat die regstelsel toe dat die diewe ons gyselaar hou in ons eie wonings? Vir ’n klap of ’n stoot gaan al die sake hof toe, maar sake soos dié word summier uitgegooi.

Thank you.” With these words, Dr. Lizette Phillips congratulated Riana Marsh and other Saron residents who alerted authorities to the fire at the Saron Clinic in 2014. Community members in Saron were presented with a certificate of commendation by the Western Cape Government health for their positive efforts during the fire last December.

The fire, which was caused by an electrical fault, started in the patient records room. Due to the high volume of paper in the room, the fire spread quickly, destroying the network line, telephones and patient folders in the process. The fire brigade were able to extinguish the fire before any consultation rooms were damaged. However, the smoke and water damage was extensive and the clinic was forced to close for renovations. The clinic is again fully operational after a temporary mobile clinic was used until all repairs were completed. The department’s engineering department started work as soon as pos-

sible and according to Karin Beerwinkel, operational manager of the facility, the fire gave them the opportunity to address a few problems that seemed to be a priority at the clinic. The engineering department undertook the following improvements: ) New shelving for storage was built. ) The whole clinic was repainted. ) A new alarm system was installed. ) The antiquated intercom system was replaced. ) All the computers were replaced. ) All the consultation and waiting areas now have air conditioning.

I can take pride in saying that they have walked this journey with me and that they have experienced the highs and lows that come with it.” Meyer said he enjoys the rush of acting live in theatre. He has just finished working on Book Wings South Africa, a collaborative bilingual theatre initiative produced in partnership with The International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, University of Cape Town, African Arts Institute and Artscape Theatre. The play called Waiting For Marcel, was streamed live from the Artscape Theatre to the University of Iowa. “I am also in the musical called Stranger Here Myself directed by Tober Reilly, Godfrey Johnson and Geoffrey Hyland, which started on 18 March.” About the challenges in the industry he said: “The most difficult thing is knowing that there are a lot of other actors who look just like me, and that I am replaceable. This is good in a way, because it forces me to work twice as hard. “Also, it frustrates me knowing that a lot of people think that acting is just some hobby and that you can easily make it. One has to work extremely hard to be taken seriously in this industry, both by practitioners and just people in general.” Meyer said he would like to eventually build a strong enough brand as a performer, to the point where he doesn’t have to be concerned about work. “I would like to reach a stage where I, as an actor, can choose what to partake in, as opposed to the industry choosing my work for me.”

Roberto Meyer, an ex-learner of Klein Nederburg Secondary School, made his debut as an actor on television when he featured in the Golden Globe-winning series Homeland. Meyer, who is currently a fourth-year student at the University of Cape Town, studying for a BAHons in Theatre and Performance, featured in episode 7 of season 4, when he played the role of Marwand, who is the eldest son of the main antagonist in season 4. According to Meyer he was not planning on doing professional work until he graduated from university, but last year a casting director encouraged him to audition for a role in Homeland. “I auditioned for the lover of Claire Danes (Carrie Mathison), but did not get the role. The role went to Suraj Sharma who plays the lead role in Life of Pi. I thought to myself: ‘Ok, cool Roberto, this was your first time auditioning for anything, you win some and you lose some’, but the casting director said she liked me nonetheless.” A few months later Meyer was asked by the same casting director to audition for Gavin Hood’s upcoming feature film Eye in the Sky and he got the part. Eye in the Sky will be released this year. A few days after the audition he was asked to once again audition for Homeland and this time he was successful. “Whilst shooting Homeland I got to meet and work with Mandy Patinkin and Numan Acar and whilst on the set of Eye in the Sky I got to meet and work with Vusi Kunene (Isidingo), Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) and the Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning Alan Rickman (Severus Snape in Harry Potter). The 22-year-old Meyer, who was also a student at Frank Petersen Music Centre in

The gift of sight For the past two years, Paarl Lions has been assisting many people to regain their sight. This was made possible by a partnership between the Lions and Dr Martin Stalmann, a local ophthalmologist. Stalmann currently assists the Lions by performing cataract operations on behalf of Paarl Lions. He also runs a full-day cataract screening clinic for patients, which the Paarl Lions also sponsors and Stalmann offers his services at a drastically reduced rate. Paarl Hospital provides their facilities for these procedures at no extra cost, such as theatre time, the services of their staff as well as the lenses required per patient. This Lions project is provided to persons from disadvantaged areas in and around Paarl and in particular to persons who do not have medical funds. Paarl Lions relies on the assistance of the public for donations to continue with this project to help the less fortunate. Wanted for questioning Mbekweni Police are urgently looking for information regarding the whereabouts of the following men, who are wanted for questioning in connection with armed and business robberies in Mbekweni. ) Arrests: Paarl Police arrested three people for drunk driving, while fines worth about R20 000 were issued for various other driving offences during combined operations held by the police, provincial and local traffic services. In Mbekweni, a 28year-old man was also arrested for drunk driving after allegedly causing an accident in Ubisi Street, Q Block, when he bumped into another vehicle at a stop street. A traffic official attending the scene noticed that the driver of the vehicle smelt of alcohol and was struggling to stand on his feet. She used a breathalyser to test his alcohol level, which proved to be higher than the legal limit. Mbekweni youths trained in agriculture and conservation The Western Cape Department of Agriculture launched an awareness campaign for schools in the Cape Winelands as to promote environmental awareness among children. And during this process a competition was held for learners to draw a picture depicting what they had learnt about their environment, and learners of Langabuya in Mbekweni won first prize. The overall object of this educational awareness campaign is to make the learners aware of, among others: the dwindling surface and ground water resources due to pollution and pesticide, herbicide and fertiliser contained in agricultural run-off; alien infestations which kill off indigenous vegetation and drain water supplies, also increasing the intensity and frequency of fires in the region.

It was established that children in the township had no access to commercial farms or any knowledge of the ecosystem services that is rendered to the larger community. They had no knowledge about their natural environment that they are living in. The department thus feels that youths must be informed in a practical way about these issues so that they will be a new generation with a proper knowledge of how to use water sparingly. The project will give “hands on” practical training to youths, teachers and leaders regarding relevant environmental issues to ensure sustainability of our natural resources. The aim of the project is, among others: Youth development; awareness of veld care / conservation / restoration and water monitoring and the development of sustainable food gardens.

Here learners of Langabuya in Mbekweni proudly stand with the posters they designed during the environmental awareness campaign, winning them an award from the Western Cape Department of Education. The learners are from left, Simamkele Yakobi, Siphahle Ndzuzo, Thimna Qudalele and Qwabi Ayakha. With them are their proud educators.

Dwelmverslawing: ’n Lelike werklikheid Jou kind of geliefde tree vreemd op maar jy sukkel om vas te stel wat die oorsaak daarvan is. Vra jouself af: is hy/sy nie dalk ’n dwelmverslaafde nie? Gebruikers steek soms jare lank hul verslawing weg en partykeer wil ouers/geliefdes eenvoudig nie die tekens raaksien nie. Paarl Post het by Leilanie Phillips-Losch, kliniese sielkundige van die departement van gesondheid, gaan aanklop vir raad. ) Hoe weet jy wanneer jou kind verslaaf is aan ’n dwelmmiddel? Is daar tekens/simptome of kom gedragsversteurings voor? Verandering wat gedrag betref, behels onder meer die volgende: * Daling in akademiese standaarde – punte word laer en kinders wil dikwels nie meer skooltoe gaan nie; * skielike emosionele of woede-uitbarstings; * toenemend uitdagende gedrag; * persone onttrek hulle van die gesin; * vriende verander – waar hulle gewoonlik saam met hul portuurgroep sou kuier, begin hulle kuier met mense wat nie heeltemal die goedkeuring wegdra nie, gewoonlik kinders of mense wat self ook dwelms gebruik; * selfsorg gaan agteruit – meisies wat gewoonlik grimering gedra of mooi aangetrek het, se kleredrag en voorkoms verander; * artikels in die huis begin wegraak of kinders kom met duur goed by die huis aan wat hulle ouers gewoonlik nie kan koop of bekostig nie; * hulle begin later saans uitgaan of oornag elders slaap en kan nie rekenskap gee van waar hulle was nie; * hulle kom besope of bedwelmd by die huis aan.

) Wat is die beste manier om hom/ haar te konfronteer? Die benadering is baie belangrik. As hulle onder die invloed by die huis kom, laat hulle eers uitslaap. Praat dán met hom/haar, maar benader dit met liefde en hou woede en ontsteltenis eers in toom. Laat hulle verstaan jy wil praat oor wat aan die gebeur is omdat jy bekommerd is. Wys hulle op die voor- en nadele, maar nie op ’n neerhalende wyse nie. Dit is belangrik dat hulle verstaan jy wil hulle net waarsku. Indien die kind/volwassene erken dat hy/ sy gebruik dwelms, probeer vasstel hoe ernstig dit is. Die familie kan iemand gaan sien om te bepaal hoe ernstig dit is en saam besluit watter behandeling of intervensie nodig is. Die kind/volwassene moet verstaan hy/sy word nie verwerp nie en die familie ondersteun hom/haar. ) Wat is die hoofredes vir die verslawing – kan dit aan een enkele faktor toegeskryf word of verskil dit van persoon tot persoon? Daar is baie faktore: * Gene/genetiese kwesbaarheid – as ’n familielid ’n drank- of dwelmprobleem het, kan ander familielede dit ook erf; * jongmense se portuurgroep – daar is baie emosies en veranderinge wat by adolessente plaasvind en hulle wil “in” wees; * lae selfbeeld – mense met ’n lae selfbeeld, wat voel hulle is nie goed genoeg nie, of baie angstig is, is ook baie vatbaar. Dwelms en alkohol verrig vir hulle “wondere”; * emosionele trauma – dwelms word gebruik om sterk emosies draaglik te maak; * rolmodel – as iemand in die gesin/familie dwelms of alkohol oormatig gebruik en die persepsie skep dat dit probleme oplos; * beskikbaarheid – die beskikbaarheid

Die rush wat hulle kry, dien as ’n uitdaging. ) Wat is die gevare van dwelmge-

bruik? Dood is natuurlik die heel ergste, en kan die gevolg wees van ’n oordosis dwelms of skadelike of toksiese dwelms. Verslaafdes raak ook al hoe minder bewus van die besluite wat hulle neem (risikogedrag) en begin deelneem aan byvoorbeeld onbeskermde seks wat kan lei tot MIV of seksueel oordraagbare siektes. Hulle kan ook bestuur onder die invloed en betrokke raak by misdaad – gewoonlik om die verslawing te onderhou, wat op sy beurt kan lei tot bende-betrokkenheid en prostitusie. Die wyse waarop dwelms gebruik word, speel ook ’n rol. Inspuitings kan verdikte are veroorsaak en vuil naalde kan gevaarlik)e of dodelike aansteeklike siektes oordra. ) Hoe help mens iemand wat nie gehelp wil word nie? Is daar ander maniere waarop ouers kinders kan help wat nie na ’n rehabilitasiesentrum wil gaan nie? Dit is baie moeilik as hulle weier. Die beste is maar om ’n professionele persoon, gewoonlik ’n maatskaplike werker of kliniese sielkundige te nader. By minderjariges help die Kinderwet om die nodige stappe te beskryf. Dit is egter steeds nie verstandig om iemand teen sy/ haar wil te dwing om vir behandeling te gaan nie. ’n Hof kan wel ’n kind of volwassene stuur vir behandeling, maar dit moet die laaste uitweg wees. Probeer eers die betrokke persoon oorreed om verstandig op te tree. Hawks bust men transporting drugs Three men trying to transport huge amounts of drugs from Gauteng to the Western Cape were caught red-handed on Tuesday during a sting operation by the Hawks at the Huguenot tunnel. With the help of the Boland K9 Unit and forensic services, the suspicious looking vehicles were pulled off and searched at the toll gates. The Hawks found 117 000 Mandrax tablets and 10 000 Ecstasy tablets as well as cash hidden inside the door panels of the vehicles. The suspects were subsequently arrested. Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed the incident. He said the arrests form part of an investigation by the Hawks together with the Crime Intelligence Unit of the police. As the suspects were arrested in the Western Cape, they will be tried in the province, Mulaudzi said. The suspects were scheduled to have their first appearance in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court yesterday facing charges of possession and dealing in drugs. The outcome of court proceedings was not available at the time of going to print.

Khanyisa Day Care Centre in Mbekweni versorg sedert 1997, kleuters. Gedurende Desember 2012 het rukwinde die opslaangebou omgewaai waarin die kleuters versorg is. Verskeie donateurs het na vore getree om as vennote betrokke te raak by die droom om 'n nuwe struktuur op te rig. Breadline Africa het opgeknapte skeepsvraghouers geskenk wat ingerig gaan word as vroeë kind ontwikkelingsentrum. Met behulp van MPact gaan die sentrum toegerus wees met nuwe tafeltjies, stoeltjies en ander toerusting om aan elke kleuter 'n positiewe leeromgewing te skep. Mpact het ook 'n 'jungle gym' geskenk. Op die foto is Gloria Siphula en 'n bestuurslid van die sentrum met die nuwe toerusting wat hulle ontvang het.

Oom Theunis Goosen se stem vir altyd stil CHRISTINE SIEBRITS Die bekende en geliefde Wellingtonner, Oom Theunis, se stem het vir ewig stil geword op 11 Maart, slegs drie dae voor sy 100ste verjaardag. Theunis Goosen is op 14 Maart 1915 op Wellington gebore, waar hy die res van sy lewe sou deurbring. Oom Theunis was in Wel- Wyle Oom lington op skool – nog in die Hoër Goosen. Seunskool, lank voor die eerste twee skole saamgesmelt het. Na skool het hy by Hugo’s Jam Factory in Bainstraat begin werk. Toe Hugo’s oorgeneem is deur Associated Canners, het hy by hulle gaan werk. Die fabriek is later oorgeneem deur Langeberg, waar hy hulle in Dal Josaphat gewerk tot en met sy aftrede. Na Oom Theunis se aftrede het hy en Tannie Jossie verhuis na Dwarskersbos, waar hulle vir 17 jaar gewoon het. Die afgelope sowat elf jaar was hy en Tannie Jossie inwoners van die Silwerkruin Huis vir Bejaardes op Wellington. In sy later jare was Oom Theunis veral bekend as kranige stapper. Hy was tot onlangs toe nog fiks en tot onlangs het hy nog elke oggend in Fonteinstraat afgestap winkel toe om sy koerant te koop. Hy het ook gereeld die Perdeskoen-roete van agt kilometer afgestap, sommer nog voor ontbyt. In September 2013 het hy en Tannie Jossie

hulle 70ste huweliksherdenking gevier. Op 94-jaar het hy ook die Perdeskoen getem, ook sommer so nog voor daar ontbyt geëet. is Daardie dag het die wind erg gewaai, maar dit het oom Theunis nie afgeskrik nie. Die roete het by Hugenote Hoërskool begin (dit was die staproete van die Safari Halfmarathon in 2009), om die Perdeskoen geloop, by die Blouvleiskool en Dwergiebos Theunis verby, Bergstraat af, en toe links in Burgstraat tot by Silwerkruin, waar hy en Tannie Jossie gewoon het. Nadat hy die Perdeskoen op 94 getem het, het oom Theunis besluit om die 10 km om die Hexberg plase en terug Wellington toe te stap. Ja, dit het hy ook vermag. Oom Theunis het graag vertel dat ’n mens kleintyd moes stap tot waar jy wou kom. Sy pa het destyds ’n koei op Hermon gaan koop, ’n tou is om die nek gesit en Oom Theunis het met koei en al die langpad teruggestap Wellington toe. Oom Theunis was nie baie lank nie, maar vir ’n streepsak het hy nie geskrik nie, het hy vertel. Hy het dit sommer so op die plaas maklik rondgedra. Hy en Tannie Jossie het ook graag na hul aftrede die land platgery totdat hy so ’n paar jaar terug sy motor verkoop het. Hierdie Wellington-legende wat lank nog onthou sal word, laat sy vrou Jossie, hulle kinders, kleinkinders en agterkleinkinders na.

ROTARY PROJECT TO EDUCATE GIRLS: Andreas Freytag, left, member of the Ernst Abbe Rotary Club of Jena in Germany, recently exchanged club banners with Deon Erasmus, president of Paarl Rotary, to celebrate their cooperation on a big charity project. These two Rotary clubs, along with the Rotary club of Bayreuth, also in Germany, joined forces and succeeded in obtaining a Rotary Global Grant to sponsor a local project, Girls Talk. This is a project in which a gynaecologist, Dr Burga Schwoerer, middle, uses role-playing and anatomical models to teach girls at local primary schools about female anatomy and physiology, pregnancy, the value and consequences of sex, contraception and sexually-transmitted diseases. Dr Schwoerer launched the project at Klapmuts and Simondium Primary Schools.

VODACOMBEKER: Die Boland Kavaliers skop eerskomende Saterdag sy Vodacombeker-veldtog af teen die Westelike Provinsie op Caledon. Die Kavaliers het verlede Vrydag op die Bolandstadion, in sy laaste opwarmingswedstryd van die seisoen, ’n sege behaal oor Victoriane van Stellenbosch. Hier is Boland-slot Yves Bashiya op pad doellyn toe vir een van sy span se vier drieë. Boland het ’n puik vertoning gelewer en met 3125 geseëvier.

PUIK DERBY: Paulus Joubert Sekondêr en Noorder-Paarl Hoërskool het mekaar op Woensdag 11 Maart op die krieketveld gepak. Die jaarlikse derby is op Boland Park gespeel en die formaat was 20 beurte. Paulus Joubert het eerste gekolf en teken 164 lopies aan. Hier kolf Antonio Fortuin van Paulus Joubert, wat met sy telling op 52 lopies die beste kolwer op die dag was. SA STAR: Local table-tennis star Stephany Martin, 24, from Paarl recently took part in the International Table Tennis Federations Africa Championships in Egypt. She is a member of the South African National Team where she is ranked number two in the country. Martin also represents the Boland Table tennis Union and is sure to headline table-tennis news for years to come.

Die opgradering van die pypleiding bestaan uit ses afdelings: (a) Pyplyn van Ysterbrug pompstasie na Enslin Straat en Jan Phillips-rylaan, (b) Pyplyn van Jan Phillipsrylaan na Victoria Pompstasie, (c) Nantes Dam gravitasiepyplyn na Nantes Dam inlaat (d) Pyplyn van Nantes Dam na Bethel Dam; (e) Pyplyn van Bethel Dam na Klipdam Reservoir, en (f) Pyplyn van die fontein na Meulwater Water-suiweringswerke. Omgewingsmagtiging (OM) is verkry vanaf die Departement Omgewingsake en Ontwikkelingsbeplanning op 16 September 2013 asook ’n gewysigde OM op 25 September 2013 (om die Victoria Pompstasie op te gradeer).

The Drakenstein Municipality is in the process of upgrading the Paarl Mountain and Ysterbrug water pumping mains. The upgrade of the pipeline consists of six sections: (a) Pipeline from Ysterbrug Pump Station to Enslin Street and Jan Phillips Drive; (b) Pipeline from Jan Phillips Drive to Victoria Pump Station; (c) Nantes Dam gravity pipeline to Nantes Dam inlet; (d) Pipeline from Nantes Dam to Bethel Dam; (e) Pipeline from Bethel Dam to Klipdam Reservoir; and (f) Pipeline from the Spring to Meulwater Water Treatment Works. An Environmental Authorisation (EA) was received from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning on 16 September 2013 and amended EA on 25 September 2013 (to upgrade the Victoria Pump Station).

Wellingtonse netbalspeler nou Sewes-Bok OUTSIDER ONS

Sunelle Barnard, boorling van Wellington, oud Hugenoter en voormalige Boland-netbalspeler, maak die komende naweek haar debuut vir die SuidAfrikaanse Sewes-vrouerugbyspan. Barnard is die enigste nuweling in die groep wat hierdie naweek aan die Atlanta Sevenstoernooi gaan deelneem. Barnard het einde verlede jaar by die groep, wat by die Stellenbosch Akademie vir Sport (SAS) gebaseer is, aangesluit. Volgens Barnard het sy ’n nuwe uitdaging gesoek en op die aanbeveling van ’n vriendin op sewesrugby besluit. “Ek het nog altyd sewesrugby baie geniet en toe ek saam met die groep begin oefen, dadelik besef dit is presies wat ek wil doen. Ek is mal oor die uitdaging en die spoed van die spel. Dit was nog altyd my droom om ’n professionele sportvrou te wees en hier het ek nou die geleentheid gekry om my droom te bewaarheid.” Barnard het haar mede-spanmaats en verskeie van die mansspelers, wat ook permanent by SAS gebaseer is, beïndruk met haar toewyding en vermoë om die spel baas te raak. Sy het binne drie maande aangepas by spelers wat al drie jaar deel van die sisteem is. “Ek moet erken dat ek ongelooflik hard moes oefen om in te haal. Ek het so bietjie natuurlike aanvoeling vir die basiese vaardighede van die spel gehad, maar van die veld af het ek ure en ure benut om op die vlak te kom waar ek kon meeding met die ander. Dit beteken egter net dat dit nog ’n vaardigheid is wat ons moet bemeester.

NIGHT RACE: The annual Drakenstein Correctional Services night race took place last Wednesday evening, with almost 350 eager athletes taking to the streets of Paarl. The race is now in its 18th year and features a 10 km and a 5 km run. Here the 10 km race gets underway in Faure Street. Both races ended at the Faure Street Sports Stadium. Winner of the men’s category was Angelo Booysen from Wellington (31:52) with Pamela Meyikwa VOB (42:46) taking the women’s race.
