ARMED robbers have again rocked the area, leaving a victim with a gunshot wound in the leg and several others traumatised. In both cases the robberies took place in broad daylight and at peak trading hours. On Monday at 13:00 Wayne Muller of Wamakersvallei Liquor Store was overpowered by robbers in the quiet Prins Street, Wellington. SMS kos R1 When Muller got out of his car, he was attacked by four men who demanded the money. He resisted and a shot was fired, striking Muller in the right leg. While the wounded Muller tried to escape to the storage room of a nearby furniture store, the robbers managed to grab the money. They fled in a white VW Polo. The police were notified and Muller was taken for medical treatment. It is suspected that the robbers followed

Due to swift action byPaarl police, two suspects were arrested within 30 minutes after the robbery. The incident occurred at 12:30 when the manager of Liquor Post, next to SevenDays supermarket, noticed a suspicious vehicle

in the store’s parking lot. The driver drove off again, returning from the Main Street to stop in Grawe Street. “I immediately became suspicious,” said liquor store manager, Juanita Summerton. “Two men walked from the vehicle to the store and acted like customers. But a third man suddenly came from behind, grabbed me and pressed a gun against my side. “One of the suspects then went behind the counter and held a knife at our cashier’s neck, forcing her to open the cash register. He grabbed all the cash.” A client was robbed of his cellphone and wallet. The robbers were demanding the key to the safe, when they suddenly turned and fled to their waiting Datsun Skyline. The police were on the scene within minutes, searching for the fugitives. The Skyline was spotted near Mbekweni where two suspects, Daliwonga Booi (27) and Khumsile Makefelele (27), both of Mbekweni, were arrested. A third suspect is still at large.

Pofaddertjie in skoolswembad Lise Beyers VERLEDE week was matrieks vuur en vlam oor hul laaste amptelike skooldag, sommiges meer vurig as ander. Terwyl talle leerders aan die einde van hul 12-jaar skoolloopbaan trane gestort het terwyl hulle vriende en onderwysers groet, het die hitte van die dag vir een jong man te veel geraak. Hy het in sy adamsgewaad deur Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle se skoolgronde gehardloop en in hulle swembad gaan afkoel. Deur die jare het dit tradisie geword vir Boishaaiers om ná hul uitstap-funksie die pad te vat en in die swembaddens van die twee meisieskole in die Paarl te spring. Dit word egter gewoonlik met skoolklere en al gedoen! Vrydag was daar ’n oorgretige jong man tussen die Boishaaiers wat op La Rochelle toegesak het. Terwyl die seuns, volgens ooggetuies, by die skoolhek ingehardloop het op pad swembad toe, was van hulle reeds kaalbolyf. Kom ons neem ons dorp terug

DIE gebied is die afgelope week weer eens geruk deur gewapende rowe. Wat ook skrikwekkend is, is dat kriminele nou helder oordag en skaamteloos eenvoudig by besighede inloop, ten volle gewapen, en sonder om te skroom hul misdaad pleeg. Met hierdie statistieke, toon dit dat misdaad aan die styg is in dié gebied. Nie net met hierdie soort strooptogte nie, maar kyk na die skrikwekkende styging in die diefstal van motors, veral bakkies - 150% volgens ondersoekbeamptes. Dit is ’n groot jammerte dat ons pragtige vallei nou in dieselfde strik geval het as die stedelike gebiede, waar misdaad ’n geruime tyd seëvier. Dit is duidelik, asook verstaanbaar, dat die polisie nie al die tyd oral kan wees nie. Hulle vra juis dat die publiek betrokke moet raak by hul gemeenskapspolisiëring-projekte. Woon jy egter een van hierdie vergaderings by, is dit ooglopend hoe min die publiek daarin belangstel om betrokke te raak met die bekamping van misdaad. Dan is dit juis diegene wat hul rug draai, wie die grootste klaagliedere sing wanneer hulle slagoffers word van misdaad. Neem een woonbuurt teen Paarlberg wat ’n gemeenskapsgedrewe buurtwag in hul gebied gestig het. Maar skaars 40% van inwoners is bereid om hierbybetrokketeraak,terwylhulleop dierugryvan inwoners wat ’n daadwerklike verskil in die gebied wil maak. Ons kan eenvoudig net nie meer staat maak op die polisie om ons te beskerm nie, ons moet begin om self verantwoordelikheid te neem. Netsokanonsookonsdorpeterugneemuitdiegreep vanmisdadigers.

Box Box Bus moving? Bus Which way are we THERE was an advertisement by the country’s intelligence services. It was the first and the last one I’ve seen from them. It punted some of their achievements, including silencing the violence linked to Pagad. Their punch-line was that people notice when things go wrong. I found that true, as we tend to notice and criticize when things are going wrong. It is easy to take what is good for granted and not worth commenting on. I guess that’s why the loudest voices are those who are not happy. Allow me to do something different and comment on what is good. One of my favourite songs is that of Baby Face, “Simple Days”. I find myself responding when he mentions that they were a LUVUYO struggling family of ZANTSI nine who shared a four-roomed house. I would silently respond that we were about seventeen people sharing a three-roomed house at 147 Matakata Street in Mbekweni. I can tell you that every room became a bedroom at night. There were many people sleeping on the floors all over my grandparents’ house. The house would not have been able to cope if there were not one or two family backyard shacks to accommodate the overflow. This situation pertained until my mother moved to get a tworoomed shack in another family’s backyard. This was shared by four people. I would have to wait until I was at university to have a room of my own. My situation was in no way unique in Mbekweni. Many families experienced dire lack of housing and as a result privacy. Far from complaining about how bad the past was, this column is about appreciating the present and the improvement it has brought. Former President Nelson Mandela once defined service delivery by making an example of houses. He said we should be able to point

I understand that there are things that the government could have done better. I am angry about a number of things. However, I believe it is not true to argue that nothing has changed in this country. It is seriously stretching the truth to say the past was better than the present, at least not for black people. I am using the question of housing as an example and I choose an example of ordinary folk in the township of Mbekweni, a place with which I have been associated with LUVUYO for just over fourty yeZANTSI ars. When you get into Mbekweni you see a lot of houses that were not previously there. I have heard people from many townships commenting about the number and quality of houses that were built in Mbekweni. My mother has her own house, her three sisters also have their own houses and one still has to occupy her “RDP” house. There are still shacks at number 147, but they are not borne out of a desperate situation as before. Some are accommodating people who are not family and one is used as a store room. Beyond my family, I see people that I grew up with having their own houses in the township. The previous councils of Drakenstein enthusiastically participated in changing the face of my home township. I can now state this fact without being accused of trying to get the former Mayor elected, as the local government elections are long gone and the next ones still far-off. It is when looking at concrete examples of people’s lives that we can draw conclusions on whether we are moving forward or backward.

My ma, wat al meer as 30 jaar huur, was baie opgewonde oor die uitnodiging wat die Munisipaliteit aan haar gerig het. Sy moes 10 Oktober om 18:00 vir ’n vergadering aanmeld by Hugenote-gemeenskapsaal. Al die mense teenwoordig was baie opgewek en gelukkig oor die uitnodiging, wat gegaan het oor die behuisingskema 68, die Schoongezightprojek. Tot almal se teleurstelling het

Probleme duur voort by SARS IN opvolging van my brief in die koerant van 1 September insake die powere diens van SARS, graag die volgende: Op 9 September het ek persoonlik ’n brief by hul kantoor in Markstraat ingehandig waarvoor hul geteken het en waarop ek tot op datum geen reaksie gekry het nie. Vandag ontvang ek egter weer ’n Engelse aansoekvorm met datum 29 September en keerdatum 30 September. Daar is ook weer die bewering oor my sogenaamde verklaring insake geen SA bankrekening nie.

Na omtrent vyf versoeke was hulle nog nie in staat om die korrekte Afrikaanse vorm aan my te voorsien nie. Nou wonder ek of hulle nie kan lees nie of slegs net bloot moedswillig is. Dit is uiters onbeskof om iemand se taalkeuse aanhoudend te ignoreer. Eerstens die kwessie van die skoolgeld. By elke vergadering vir die matrikulante en hulle ouers was daar elke keer gesê dat die kinders nie matriekafskeid toe sal gaan nie indien hulle skoolgeld nie betaal is nie. So, die ouer en die kind het geweet wat die nagevolge gaan wees indien hulle nie skoolgeld betaal nie. Volgens mediaberigte is Waylon (of haar ouers) agterstallig met drie jaar se skoolgelde. Wie se skuld is dit? Die hoof s’n? Elke ouer is verantwoordelik vir die betaling van sy kind se skoolgeld. Waylon se ma wil nou kom sê dat sy werkloos is. Ek wil net sê dit is nie die punt nie. LAPPIES-WERK. Inwoners van Pleinstraat was vandeesweek behoorlik warm onder die kraag oor die lappies-werk wat aan hul geliefde straat gedoen is. Hierdie padoppervlak is volgens hulle al ’n geruime tyd besig om te verkrummel en behoort geheel en al herteer te word. Maar in plaas hiervan, het munisipale werkers tientalle plekkies in die teer uitgekap, om slegs hierdie swak plekke te herteer. “En volgende jaar sit ons weer met dieselfde slaggate,” sê ’n inwoner.

Tough census THE quest to count every single person in South Africa has begun. But this is proving to be not such an easy task for the men and women walking the streets. Local workers say they are often not allowed through the gates of residences, are treated with animosity and many people refuse to divulge the necessary information. The task of census CENSUS. A census worker will be clearly identifiable with a badge, the census forms, a census bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. You do not need to invite the census worker into your home as you can speak to him outside. Do not give your identity number, credit card, banking or financial situation information to anyone even if they claim to need it for the census. Census workers may contact you by telephone, post or in person at home, but will never contact you by email.

Around the Arboretum in 80 minutes Lise Beyers TO get a hands-on feel of the Paarl Arboretum, the mayor, Drakenstein municipal councillors as well as municipal management, took to the Arboretum last week, covering its length and breadth. This jewel of Paarl, on the banks of the Berg River, was established in 1957 and since then developed into the magnificent tree park which it is today. The Arboretum is situated on the eastern bank of the Berg River, is 2,8 km long and covers approximately 31 ha of land. Divided into six continents, with each continent being represented by its own trees and shrubs. In excess of 2 000 trees grow here, with 600 different species from right across the world. But during the past few years, the Arboretum has become home to vagrants and criminals. The identification plaques, which were originally metal, were all stolen. They were then replaced by plastic plaques, but these too have now been vandalised. Littering takes place, trees are damaged and people are often victims of muggings and attacks. Executive mayor Gesie van Deventer has identified all open recreational areas as priority areas, wanting to utilise them to their best potential for the public. The Arboretum especially is important to the Paarl tourism indus-

try, as it draws many arbor enthusiasts from throughout the world. “We are in the process of looking at ways to make the Arboretum a safer place and to keep it clean and tidy for all to enjoy,” said van Deventer. “I have fallen in love with this park today. Its beauty is magnificent. “We must take back the Arboretum from the criminal elements and boost it to reach its full potential, not only for the people of Paarl, but for our visitors as well.” Stef Venter, parks superintendent of the municipality, said that there are few places in the country where such a variety of trees from across the world can be seen. He pointed out a South American Araucaria and said that in the early 1990 a virus had depleted the population of this tree world-wide. It was then discovered that these trees in the Paarl Arboretum where the only trees which were virus free. These seeds from Paarl were then harvested and planted throughout the world. During the visit, van Deventer immediately decided that her favouritetreewastheemperor’stree, which boasts a beautiful, perfume-filled flower in Spring. “Everything will not change overnight, but we have a business plan in place which will step by step re-invent the Arboretum.” An essential part of this plan is to have regular law-enforcement patrols to keep criminals at bay.

Relieve Eskom’s load HOME-OWNERS in Paarl and Wellington will be joining Drakenstein Municipality and Eskom to help reduce the electricity demand – by participating in a programme aimed at installing appliance control devices connected to geysers in their homes. These units will be installed at no cost to the home-owners. The first phase of the project will be undertaken in the Groenvlei area. This Residential Load Management (RLM) project forms part of Drakenstein’s demand management initiative in the region. An appliance control device is a load disconnecting relay that can be used to disconnect specific domestic loads, such as geysers, for short periods. Currently, the Municipality will use one of the circuits to control geysers, while in future, the other circuit will be utilised to control loads, such as pool pumps, underfloor heating and air-conditioners. Geysers account for between 30 and 50% of the electricity consumption in a household and this makes them an ideal starting point for electricity demand management in the residential sector. The main advantage of the load management system is that the appliance control device can switch the heating element off during times when it is required. However, it is important to note that interruption of supply can be done while still providing hot water to a household due to the heat retention properties of a geyser. Geysers will be switched off during times of peak demand – this project focussing on

the evening peak. Geyser control is done as and when required depending on system demand. The capacity associated with the project will mainly allow the Drakenstein Municipality to shift load between 18:00-20:00 in the evenings, but also if required during other peak time periods. The RLM project in Drakenstein works as follows: a small appliance control device is installed in the home of the customer. Groups of geysers will be controlled and monitored through a radio sent from data concentrators, managed from the municipality’s Control Centre. According to Gerard van der Merwe, manager utilities, Municipalities and Commercial Business Unit at Powertech IST Otokon, qualified contractors were appointed by the company to install the appliance control devices in houses. This will take place during October and November 2011 as part of the first phase of the project. The second phase of the project will start in March 2012 and a total of 17 000 relays will be installed in Paarl and Wellington. Home-owners are being assured that only approved and trained contractors with proper identity cards (displaying logos of Eskom, Drakenstein Municipality and Powertech IST Otokon) will visit homes to install the appliance control units. Die derde spel teen Oos-Kaap het hulle verloor, maar met ’n silver beker weggedraf.

KLAVIER. Felrie Oettlé (links) van Hoërskool Gimnasium aangewys as die algehele wenner van die intrumentale kategorie vir haar klavieruitvoering by die SA talentkompetisie in Gauteng. Felrie het twee platinummedaljes gewen vir klavier. Sy het ook saam met haar suster, Tilanie Oettlé (regs) ook ’n Gimmie, drie goue medaljes gewen vir hul viool- en tjelloduet.

SKUT. Danie Obermeyer van Courtrai Laerskool het deelgeneem aan die internasionale jaggeweer-kompetisie te Robertson. Hy het met 540/600 die junior o.17 afdeling gewen. en daarmee vyfde uit 117 skuts gekom. In die SA Jaggeweer SuidKaap ope-skietkompetisie te Oudtshoorn het hy die eerste plek behaal in die penkopafdeling en is 30ste geplaas uit die 113 skuts.

RUGBY. Johan Serdyn van Hugo Rust Laerskool was deel van die Boland o.13sewe-aan-’n-kantrugbyspan wat aan die SA-toernooi in Rustenburg deelgeneem het.

Daar sal môre en Saterdag gekuier word in drie plaastuine, vyf dorpstuine en ontspan word by die gratis Tuin-expo op die Langkloofroseplaas aan die hange van Groenberg. Besoekers kan stalletjies, eetgoed en blomrangskikkings in die historiese herehuis geniet terwyl kinders heerlik op die grasperke speel. Spesiale werkswinkels word oor die periode van die Oop Tuine aangebied. Belangstellendes kan leer skilder, leer oor tuinfotografie, ’n planthouer versier en kinders kan leer plant en saai. Die maatskaplike werk studente van Hugenote Kollege, Wilmaine Kellerman, Naomi Matthys en Sandy October, het tydens die onlangse Week vir Bejaardes hul gemeenskapprojek gehou by Silwerkruin in Wellington. Dit was ’n intergenerasieprojek waar erkenning gegee is aan ouer persone wat bydra tot die ontwikkeling van die samelewing. Hulle het ’n sportdag, handvaardighede, talente-aanbieding, modeparade en sangdag gehou.

DIE KLUGSPEL, Kinkels innie Kabel van André P Brink, word deur Weltevrede Sekondêre Skool aangebied op 27 tot 29 Oktober in die CP van der Merwe-saal, Wellington. Die toneelstuk is gebaseer op Shakespeare se komedie, Comedy of Errors, en fokus op wat gebeur as persone met mekaar verwar word, natuurlik met komiese gevolge. Die stuk staan onder regie van Marc Morilly met Rowen Geneke as musiekregisseur en Monrico van Wyk as chereograaf. Donderdag 27 Oktober is daar ’n middagvertoning vir leerders om 16:00, teen R15. Five stars for Diemersfontein IN a first for Wellington wine producer Diemersfontein, and a first for a white wine of Wellington origin, the Carpe Diem Chenin Blanc 2010 has won a coveted five-star rating in the 2012 edition of Platter’s South African Wine Guide. Farm owner David Sonnenberg sees the result as a tribute to winemaker Francois Roode and consultant Brett Rightford, who together have achieved near-top ratings over various vintages of the wine. Of the Carpe Diem Chenin Blanc, Roode says, “This is a blend of low-yielding vines, including dryland bushvines in three diverse terroirs, that produce exceptional fruit complexity. The 2010 vintage is showing a fine balance of flavours from the nine months it spent on the leaves.”

The five star rating comes in the midst of the annual Pinotage pilgrimage, Pinotage on Tap, due on Saturday. The event sees the new-vintage launch of Diemerfontein’s original coffee chocolate Pinotage; a consistent four-star performer in the Platter guide, whose wins this year include a prestigious double gold at the Five Nations Challenge and 91 points in Wine Spectator USA. Interested parties should submit partnership proposals that illustrate how their project will assist the CWDM in meeting its objectives for the year 2012/2013 (1 July 2012 until 30 June 2013). Drakenstein official to present paper in Netherlands THE Drakenstein Municipality’s Engineer-Waste Management, Ronald Brown, has been nominated as member of a South African delegation to the International Water Week in Amsterdam. Brown will also, in collaboration with the Department of Water Affairs, present a paper on the prestigious Blue and Green Drop Certification, the first such accreditation model in the world. The Consulate of the Netherlands in South Africa requested that a South African delegation be represented at this esteemed International Conference.

Local restaurants on top list SEVERAL local restaurants have been nominated for Eat Out DStv food network restaurant awards. There are 20 nominees on the list from which the restaurant of the year, chef of the year, service excellence award as well as the top ten restaurants will be chosen. The nominees are Babel, Bosman’s, The Restaurant at Grande Provence, Pierneef à La Motte, The Tasting Room as well as further afield the Azure Restaurant, DW Eleven-13, The Greenhouse, Hartford House, Jordan Restaurant, La Colombe, Mosaic Restaurant, Nobu, Overture, Planet Restaurant, Roots, The Roundhouse, Terroir, The Test Kitchen and Tokara. Michael J Rhode, head of Drakenstein department electrical services, was invited by the Brazilian government to do a presentation on “The Regulation of Prepayment Metering in South Africa” at their international prepayment seminar. Rhode was selected for his superior knowledge in metering and having been one of the technical drivers of prepayment metering since 1990.

Jive competition commences this weekend THE Boland Cricket Board (BCB) and Quality Beverages (Jive), have renewed the sponsorship of the Club and Regional Pro20 competition to the value of R280 000 for the 2011/12 season. The Jive Regional 20/20 competition will commence this Sunday 23 October, at the Coetzenberg cricket fields at the University of Stellenbosch. The round-robin phase of the competition will continue on the following two Sundays with fixtures divided into morning and afternoon sessions, with the semi-finals and final played on Sunday 27 November. This would be a perfect day for a family outing and the provincial office would like to extend an invitation to all members of the public to join them and make this day a huge festivity. The semi-finals will be played in the morning and early afternoon, with the final being a day-night match.

The Jive Club 20/20 round fixtures are scheduled for the weekend of 12 and 13 November. The club fixtures are divided into different sections within the regions with the semis and final played on 3 December at an allocated field within the region. These matches will also be played during the course of the day and divided into a morning and afternoon session. The winner and runner-up in each region will proceed to the quarter final stage of the competition which will be hosted at the Parys fields in Paarl. The semi-final and final will be hosted at Boland Park on Sunday 11 December. There will be financial gain for the winners, but the sponsors again stressed that the money must be used for coaching and the development of the game. Entrance to the semi-finals and the finals played at Boland Park will be free to the public.

LAST Saturday the 2011 Winelands Basketball League final matches were played at the Paarlzict Primary School and in the final of the Gold division the Dream Team of Drakenstein Correctional Services was victorious beating Kayamandi 17-15. In the primary school final for girls PC Petersen was victors over Simondium by 2019. In the Boys’ B-Division PC Petersen out run Kayamandi by 26-4 and Franschhoek High School beat Dalabuhle 12-0. In the 3rd place game Kayamandi beat Dalabuhle 10-7. In the finals of this division PC Petersen beat Franschhoek High School 30-6. The results in the Boys’ A-division are as follows: Solms Delta 27 - Kayamandi 19, Groendal 23 - Simondium 20. 3rd place game: Kayamandi 28 - Simondium 22 and the finals: Solms Delta 56 - Groendal 22. The results in the high school league (Silver Division) the results were: Bridges Academy 35 - Ligstraal 28, Charleston Hill 36 - Franschhoek High School 28. In the 3rd place game FHS beat Ligstraal 32-18. In the Silver Division finals Charleston Hill beat Bridges Academy 45-31. In the H.S./Prison League (Gold Division) the DCS Dream Team won their match against Desmond Tutu H.S. 32-28 and Kayamandi beat DCS Daredevils 26-9. The 3rd place winners was Desmond Tutu who beat DCS Daredevils 25-18.

In a fast paced game the Boishaai team were unable to break down their opponents, as the Gymnasium defence stood firm. Scorers for Gymnasium were Schalk Burger, and Human and an own goal from Boishaai. In the second half Boishaai pulled a goal back and briefly threatened.
