Leerders weggewys op eerste skooldag DEVIDEAN MOSES Gemoedere het op die eerste skooldag by Mary Help of Christians Primêre Skool hoog geloop toe 132 leerders weggewys is. Ouers is die afgelope maande in ’n twis met die skool weens ’n skoolfooie-kwessie wat probleme veroorsaak. Volgens ’n ouer wat anoniem wil bly, het sy reeds Juliemaand 2014 haar dogter se skoolfooie klaar betaal. “Maar toe ek my dogter op 19 Desember 2014 by die skool vir gr. 7 vir 2015 wil registreer het die skool geweier om my geld te vat. Ek het die volle skoolfooie vir vanjaar gegee, maar niemand wou die geld neem nie. Tot vanoggend was ek vreeslik onseker of hulle my kind gaan terug neem. Ek het die skool vroegtydig gebel en die skoolhoof het aanbeveel dat die kind skooltoe moet kom.” Nog ’n ouer, wie se kind verbied is om skooltoe te gaan, het ook haar misnoeë uitgespreek oor die kwessie. “Ek en my man het persoonlik ons appèlbrief by die skool afgelewer om uitstel te kry tot Oktobermaand om ons uitstaande skoolfooi van R500 te betaal. Maar ons het nog geen reaksie hierop gekry nie.” Volgens die skool se voorsitter, Lawrence Smith, is dié skool as ’n Engels-medium, onafhanklike skool geregistreer. “Dié onafhanklike skool se subsidie van die Wes-Kaap Onderwysdepartement is substansieel minder as die subsidie wat gewone openbare skole ontvang. Ons opvoeders se salarisse en ons munisipale rekening word

nie deur die WKOD betaal nie. Daar word van die skool verwag om alle uitgawes uit die lopende rekening te dek. Die instandhouding van geboue is ook die skool se verantwoordelikheid. Alles in ag geneem is dit duidelik soos daglig dat die skool nie kan oorleef net van die subsidie nie,” vertel Smith. Verder meen hy dat die beheerraad ’n baie hoë premie op geldinsamelingsprojekte en 100% betaling van skoolgeld plaas – alle ouers weet dit.” Smith vertel voorts: “Ouers teken ’n kontrak wanneer hulle hul kind vir die volgende jaar registreer. Die tweede betaling verskuldig is betaalbaar voor die einde van Maart en die laaste betaling verskuldig is voor die einde van Mei. Ouers wat sukkel om te betaal is verlede jaar ingelig om vroegtydig geen skoolfooiskole vir hul kinders te soek. Millicent Merton van die departement van onderwys het bevestig dat onafhanklike skole privaat bedryf word en op geld staatmaak wat ingesamel word deur die eienaars van sulke skole. “’n Senior WKOD-beampte het ’n vergadering met die beheerraad in Desember 2014 bygewoon. Vagrants on CBD property a problem LISE BEYERS

Yesterday was another big day for all the first time school attendants. Hundreds of Gr 1 learners were dropped off at various schools where they will begin an exciting 12 year journey. As usual Paarl Post photographers were sent out to cover a couple of schools. Each year we see less crying children but this year we saw a few crying parents. Mostly the mothers who looked rather distraught when their children finally let go of their hands. We hope that all Gr. 1 pupils have a wonder ful (short) first week.

Is central Paarl just another example of urban decay? This is the question of residents in and around Derkesen Street, close to the heart of Paarl CBD, as a property on the corner of Derksen and Loop Streets remains a bone of contention. For years the property was under the spotlight due to the condition of the dilapidated house and the hordes of vagrants who were living within its walls. Heritage Western Cape had repeatedly denied requests from the owner, Giepie Brandt, for a demolition permit. But eventually the house, which was regarded by some as a historical central Paarl building, was so badly neglected, that it had to be demolished. A vibracrete wall was then erected right around the property to keep vagrants out. But now, behind the closed walls, vagrants are still making the property their home. Various nearby residents of the apartment buildings, have raised much concern.

“There are up to 12 people staying their at night. Their is no running water or ablutions and one can sometimes smell the stench of urine and faeces, especially now in the hot months. The property is strewn with litter. We have to often at night contend with fighting going on amongst the vagrants and abusive, filthy language. “We were overjoyed when the dilapidated house on the property was eventually demolished, because we thought that it would

solve the vagrant problem. But now they are back in droves. “Once or twice they have been removed but a few hours later they are back. We really fear that if they start building real structures, then we will never get rid of them.” A resident of the adjacent Atlanta flats, who also asked to remain anonymous, said that residents are often cursed at when walking in the area and they are even exposed to these vagrants in the midst of sexual deeds.

The owner of the property said that he is also despondent about the situation. “We have done everything in our power to keep these people out, but they keep returning. “We have continuously contacted the police about the trespassers. But nothing seems to help.” Brandt said that their initial intention was to develop the property, but due to the current economic climate of Paarl CBD, it is now not viable. He added that they are looking into the possibility of removing the trees, which could curb the vagrants from making it their home. Municipal Manager, Johann Mettler, said that the municipal law-enforcers and the police often patrol the area to tackle this problem. “We are aware of homeless people who from time to time illegally stay here, even though the property is well fenced. “Furthermore, it is not our responsibility to patrol a private property, but it is the owner’s responsibility to do so and to secure the property.”

The quick reaction of the members of Paarl East Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) led to the arrest of three men who had allegedly used a stolen police vehicle to rob a cigarette van. The incident took place last Thursday morning after the alleged thieves first stole a blue Nissan bakkie belonging to the SAPS Nyanga’s Detective branch, before heading to Paarl East. According to Paarl East police spokesperson, lieutenant Diana Linee, sgt. Quinton Stipps and a colleague were on a routine patrol in Lantana Street when they where alerted via the police radio that the driver of a British American Tobacco vehicle had reported that he was being followed by a suspicious vehicle. “The members immediately attended to the complaint and soon spotted the suspicious vehicle. When the three men inside the vehicle saw the police they made a U-turn and tried to flee the

A high speed chase through the streets of Paarl East followed with the vehicles skipping several red robots and stop streets. The suspects then jumped out of the vehicle while it was still moving in Meerhof Street, Charleston Hill, and

it crashed into a stationary vehicle in front of the owners house. The three suspects of Khayelitsha were arrested on the scene and appeared in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of possession of stolen property, fraud and reckless and negligent driving. The public of Paarl East is asked to report all crime by phoning 021 877 5900.

Nierversaking stuit hom nie LIEZL DAVIDS “Ek weet nie hoe ek deur die eksamen gekom het nie. Dit is definitief die Here, want as ek Hom gevra het vir krag, dan het Hy dit vir my gegee.” Vir die meeste matrikulante is hul grootse uitdaging in hul laaste jaar op skool om die eindeksamen suksesvol te voltooi. Maar vir Geaton Martins (18), ’n leerder by Hoër Geaton Martins laat Jongenskool Paarl, was dit nie onderkry nie. al uitdaging wat op hom gewag het nie. Geaton het aan die einde van sy gr. 11eksamen die skoknuus gekry dat die erge krampe wat hy gekry het nie stresverwant was soos die dokters vermoed het nie, maar wel nierversaking is. Dié nuus het sy hele lewe verander. Die eens aktiewe sportseun moet nou drie keer ’n week vir vier uur lank op ’n keer aan ’n dialise-masjien gekoppel word. Maar volgens Geaton het sy diagnose hom ook geestelik laat groei. “Ek was baie geskok en hartseer toe die dokter sê ek het nierversaking. Ek dink die ergste skok was toe ek hoor van die dialise wat ek weekliks moet kry en dat ek nie meer mag rugby speel nie.” Al moes hy sy leefwyse verander en ook rugby, atletiek en swem opgee, gee Geaton nie op nie. Behalwe dat matriek op sy eie

’n stresvolle jaar kan wees, het Geaton ook baie skooldae gemis weens dialise of omdat hy nie goed gevoel het nie. “Ek was baie min by die skool en dit was moeilik om in te haal met die skoolwerk, maar die onderwysers en ons skoolhoof, mnr. Swart, het my baie ondersteun.” Toe Geaton hoor hy het matriek geslaag, was hy oorstelp van blydskap. “Toe ek hoor ek slaag, was ek so bly. My hele familie is nie sy siekte hom baie trots op my. FOTO: LIEZL DAVIDS Ons het almal gehuil.” Volgens hom het dit maar moeilik gegaan met die voorbereiding vir die eindeksamen. “Omdat ek baie moeg raak, het ek nie altyd die energie gehad om te leer nie. Ek wou net lê. Maar ek glo met die Here se hulp het ek geslaag.” Een van sy vakke moes hy ook in die daghospitaal skryf waar hy vir sy dialise gegaan het. Geaton se droom is om ’n pastoor te word en natuurlik ook om binnekort ’n geskikte nierskenker te kry. “Dit is nie maklik om altyd positief te bly nie, maar dit is waar die toets lê. En ek weet om probleme te hê is nie maklik nie, maar sodra jy opgee verloor jy klaar.” * Geatin Martins matriculated successfully at Paarl Boys’ High School, despite his battle with kidney failure.

Sunday shootings leave 1 dead, 3 injured Mbekweni was just short of a scene from the Wild West on Sunday after three different shooting incidents left a 25-year-old man dead and three others hospitalised. The first incident occurred at around 01:00 on 18 January, when two males were shot at their residence in Chris Hani. According to Mbekweni police spokesperson, Sgt Nceba Vanqa, police responded to a complaint of a shooting incident in the area, but upon their arrival at the scene the victims had already been transported to Paarl Hospital. Vanqa said an eyewitness told the police that he was inside his house when he heard gunshots and went outside to investigate. There he met the victims, Bulelani Sankwenkwe (26) and Mmeli Mpolweni (29), who told him that four armed men had entered their yard and fired shots at them while they were outside the house. Sankwenkwe sustained a wound to his right arm and has been discharged from hospital. Mpolweni was shot in his left shoulder and is still recuperating in hospital. It is believed that the suspects wanted to rob the house. Two cases of attempted murder are being investigated. No arrests have been made. At 15:10 police responded to a second shooting incident in H-Block. Upon their arrival they found two men, Mcebisi Phoswa (25) and Bokang Lefatsa (34), in a shack, lying in a pool of blood. Both were still alive. Phoswa told police that they were sitting inside the shack when two men entered and, without saying a word, they fired shots at them before running away.

Lefatsa sustained multiple wounds to his head, arm and leg, while Phoswa sustained a bullet wound to his upper torso. When paramedics arrived at the scene, Phoswa could barely speak and went into shock. Both victims were transported to Paarl Hospital, where Phoswa later succumbed to his injuries. Vanqa said nine empty 9 mm bullet cartridges and one bullet projectile were found at the crime scene. A case of attempted murder and a case of murder is being investigated. The police are looking for Lubabalo Diko (Player) and Mzo, who can help in the investigation of this incident. On Sunday night a policeman from Paarl’s Criminal Investigations Department and his family were also in the firing line when two suspects fired shots through their bedroom window. According to Vanqa, the incident happened at 23:39 at the Detective Constable’s house in New Drommedaris, while he was asleep with his girlfriend and child. He allegedly woke up when two people were passing the bedroom window. When he went to investigate, four shots were fired from outside. No one was hit. He instructed his girlfriend to take their child and lie on the floor. Together they crawled to the kitchen where he managed to get his cellular phone and contact the police. When they arrived at the scene, the suspects had already fled. Four bullet holes were found in the bedroom window, while three bullet casings were found in the kitchen and one on a couch. Overcrowded classes hamper education Apart from a few tears here and there, hundreds of Grade 1 learners were very excited to take their first step into the “big world” this week, as they started their school careers. If nurtured well through their schooling years, any child should make the grade and successfully complete their school careers. But because of the many cracks in the education system, one wonders how many of these little ones will make it through to matric. A major problem which many schools have to contend with is overcrowded classrooms. Schools are simply forced by the authorities to make room for learners in classrooms which are already filled to capacity. Little developing brains need tender loving care to develop to their full potential. This can not happen in overcrowded classrooms, as many a teacher will agree. Time and money will have to be spent by the authorities to alleviate the burden of teachers and in doing so, pave the way to success for all learners.

Geestesgoedere wat mense vir verskeie redes nie het of nie ag nie, of selfs nie begryp en tot voordeel van hulself en ander kan aanwend nie, kweek ’n brandarm nasie. Om geestesgoedere te kan erken asook herken, dit te handhaaf, koester en versamel, eis meer as tersiêre opleiding. Dis iets veel kosbaarder en lê op ’n ander vlak van jou psige. Madiba se reënboognasie-visie was omdat sy geestesgoedere hom gevat het deur die hoogtes en laagtes in sy lewe sonder om ander te blameer. Daarom kon hy met sy denke, sinvolle uitsprake maak en pleit vir die goeie en mooie. Kinders verwek kinders. Maak aanspraak op finansiële hulp by die regering sonder kennis van wat en wie ’n regering is. Landgenote verkrag, vermoor en mishandel mekaar. Verniel ou mense en kindertjies. Dreig en bedreig die voortbestaan van die kosprodusente. Moord baljaar op die paaie deur mense wat voertuie bestuur terwyl hulle nie eens behoort te kwalifiseer vir ’n kruiwalisensie nie. Tienduisende van die Reënboognasie is gaste van Korrektiewe Dienste op die belastingbetaler se rekening en dra niks by tot die vooruitgang van die land nie. Nog meer loop los rond en vergal die lewe van dié Suid-Afrikaners wat ten spyte van the straight and narrow volg. Hierdie bitterbek-skrywe is ongelukkig die waarheid. Johann Mettler, die Munisipale Bestuurder, reageer: Met die ontwikkeling op die hoek van Bergrivier- en Lady Greystraat. is ’n verkeersimpakstudie gedoen, soos wat vereis word. Dit het gevind aanpassings is nodig in die padinfrastruktuur as gevolg van die verhoogde verkeersvlakke, om verkeersvloei en padveiligheid te verseker. Voertuie kan die Boulevard bereik deur Bergrivierstraat via Van der Spuy- en Hospitaalstraat of Bergrivierstraat via Lady Greystraat om in Bergrivier Boulevard aan te sluit by ’n verkeersligbeheerde oorgang. Die voorgestelde wysigings is aan die raad voorgelê en goedgekeur en die kostes van die wysigings is deur die ontwikkelaar gedra en nie deur die belastingbetaler nie.

Excellent service was a pleasant surprise During the holidays I spent much time doing chores that I never got time for; things such as paperwork. I realised, though, that it was time for me to go to Paarl Police station to renew my fire arm licences. This I had actually been delaying because I dreaded the

thought. But to my delight, I was pleasantly surprised. The lady who helped in the charge office to certify my numerous copies of documentation, was friendly and quick with the task. On to the firearm licensing office, where I was

greeted by Hazel who, very smoothly, went through the applications, and within less than 15 minutes, everything was done and dusted. Thanks guys, you made my day.

NOTICE OF ROAD WORK CONTRACT No. C819: THE REHABILITATION OF DIVISIONAL ROAD 1126 BETWEEN SLENT ROAD AND WINDMEUL AND MAIN ROAD 218 BETWEEN WINDMEUL AND PAARL The WESTERN CAPE GOVERNMENT, Provincial Roads and Transport Management Branch, have awarded the contract to AmandlaGCF Construction /Umzali Civils Joint Venture in November 2013. The contract is now 12 Months into the approximate 20 months duration. Ongoing Rehabilitation works will now change focus from DR1126 to MR218 heading towards Paarl. We would like to formally notify all Paarl residents that works on MR 218 will now continue from the R44 side Towards Paarl, whereby a one-way system will be established for traffic from the R44 towards Paarl. Traffic from Paarl towards the R44 will have to utelise Paardeberg Road and MR25 towards Malmesbury to join the R44 again as per attached illustrated map below. The reasons for the one way system was decided in conjuction with the farmers during the harvest period coming up, that will minimise the stop & go delays and speed up the construction process Traffic will be accommodated on the existing road or on temporary deviations. In some instances, signalled one-way traffic will be necessary. Access to and from both commercial and private properties as well as intersecting roads shall be maintained at all times. It is a provision of the contract that traffic shall be accomodated with the least delay and discomfort to the public. The safety and convenience of the travelling public are of the utmost importance and every effort will be made to ensure that all temporary road signs, traffic cones, flagmen and speed controls are maintained and are effective, and that courtesy is extended to the public at all times. The public is requested to be patient and exercise caution when using the road. The Western Cape Government will endeavour to maintain and improve the provincial road network for the social development and economic growth of the Western Cape. Hope Through Action opens sports centre in Franschhoek The non-profit organisation, Hope Through Action, opened an indoor community sports centre, the Franschhoek Valley Community Sports Centre, in Groendal. The opening was officiated by Western Cape premier, Helen Zille, together with the mayor of Stellenbosch, Conrad Sidego, and Hope Through Action patron, Philip Green. The centre ties in with Hope Through Action’s vision, “through the power of sport – to change lives, to bring hope and to release potential” – by provided the facilities where young people from the surrounding community, aged six to 18, now have the opportunity to enrol for various free sporting programmes. In this way, they are included in an uplifting environment that not only contributes to their physical development but plays a meaningful role in teaching them social, communication, health and other life skills.

This establishment aims to mirror the success that has been achieved at Hope Through Action’s first community sports centre in Mbekweni. Hope Through Action places particular emphasis on uplifting communities that are often overlooked and without much aid. The facilities in Groendal comprise a multi-purpose indoor pitch, training and meeting rooms, a resource centre, showers and kitchen facilities. The centre is open seven days a week and operates according to a specific class schedule. Furthermore, like the Mbekweni facilities, it includes an early-learning centre which is operated by The Kusasa Project. The opening of the centre in Groendal was made possible through donations raised by Philip Green. A man who wears many hats, Green is also the chairman of Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale. Bearing testimony to Green’s generosity, he was awarded a CBE (Commander of

the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in November 2014 for his philanthropic and business efforts. Among others involved in Hope Through Action, are three familiar South African faces namely, former swimming champion Ryk Neethling, celebrity chef Reuben Riffel and former cricket star Gary Kirsten. These three men not only contribute as ambassadors for the organisation, but also as excellent role models to the young people of South Africa. “It makes me incredibly proud to be a part of an initiative of this nature and to have witnessed the opening of a development that is going to shape children’s futures, nurture upcoming sports stars and offer hope to a community,” Ryk Neethling said: The sports centre is run on a volunteer basis and the development thereof was facilitated by a number of companies. SCORE, an NGO is responsible for the running of the centre and its sports programmes.

MARYKE SWART ’n Langverwagte buurtwag is amptelik op die been gebring in Noorder-Paarl en slaag reeds daarin om dié buurt “skoner” te hou. Rainier Nel, oudspeurder en een van die stigterslede van die Noorder-Paarl buurtwag, sê toe hy onlangs ’n Facebook-blad van Noorder Paarl FB Buurtwag 082 444 3194 sektor 3 begin volg en al die klagtes van inwoners lees, het hy besef dit is tyd dat hulle as inwoners self inspring om die buurt te beveilig. Toe ’n oudpolisiekollega boonop op Facebook sê sy en haar gesin gaan begin patrollie loop, het Nel en sy 17-jarige dogter dadelik by hulle aangesluit. Hulle het daarna gereeld van voor middernag tot 06:00 in die oggende die strate van die buurt te voet gepatrolleer. “Ons moes, want die meeste men-

Hy hoop om deur sy films ’n positiewe boodskap aan die jeug oor te dra en hulle uit bendes te hou. Kwayo Louw (20), ’n student in maatskaplike werk aan die Hugenote Kollege op Wellington, maak sedert einde verlede jaar ’n verskil in die denkwyse van die Klapmuts-jeug deur naweek ná naweek optredes en aktiwiteite te hou om jong mense van die strate af en uit bendes te probeer hou. Een van die maniere is om hulle te betrek by films met ’n sterk boodskap oor bendegeweld, dwelm- en alkoholmisbruik en vrouemishandeling. Met die hulp van ’n videograaf het hy reeds twee kortfilms verfilm oor bendegeweld in Kaapstad, en onlangs besluit om ’n soortgelyke projek op Klapmuts te doen. Louw sê nadat vyf jong mans onlangs in bende-aktiwiteite in sy tuisdorp van Scottsdene, Kraaifontein, doodgeskiet is, het hy net weer besef dit is tyd dat gemeenskappe saamstaan en die jeug positief beïnvloed deur ’n positiewe boodskap aan hulle oor te dra. Louw en sy span het sowat twee weke gelede begin skiet aan die film Tears of a woman wat handel oor vrouemishandeling, maar ook aspekte van alkohol- en dwelmmisbruik uitlig. “Die jeug (op Klapmuts) het niks om hulle mee besig te hou nie en daar is nie rolmodelle vir hulle nie. Van die manne wat ons (in die

fliek) gebruik, is met bende-aktiwiteite besig. Maar hy weet as hy nou in die film speel, moet hy hom gedra, want mense kyk op na hom. Dan gaan hy al die goed ook later los.” Louw, wie se passie eintlik by musiek lê, het aanvanklik ’n liedjie geskryf oor die bendegeweld in Kraaifontein en later besluit om dit in ’n musiekvideo te omskep. Toe hy sien hoe goed die video geredigeer is, het hy die videograaf ingespan en besluit om sy liriek in ’n kortfilm te omskep. Dié kortfilm, Change of life, het gehandel oor ’n bendelid se bekering. Daarop het die kortfilm Back home gevolg oor jong bendelede wat hul bendebaas, Papa Luke, verafgod en as rolmodel beskou het. “Toe Papa Luke aan die einde van die film sterf, het hulle besef niemand is te groot om dood te gaan nie en het tot bekering gekom.” Hy sê sy nuwe film handel oor ’n man wat sy vrou en twee kinders mishandel. “Sy moet dan besluit of sy hom gaan vergewe of vir altyd gaan haat.” Die tweede helfte van die film wys ’n ommekeer in die man se lewe. Louw sê hy hoop om dit teen middel vanjaar te voltooi. Wanneer die film klaar is, gaan hy dit by die Klapmuts-sportveld met ’n projektor aan die gemeenskap wys. Hy hoop om daarna van dorp tot dorp met die film te toer. KONSEP HERSIENING VAN RUIMTELIKE ONTWIKKELINGSRAAMWERK (ROR)

DRAFT REVIEW OF SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK (SDF)

Die Raad het op 2 Desember 2014 besluit om die Konsep Hersiening van die Ruimtelike Ontwikkelingsraamwerk (ROR) beskikbaar te stel vir publieke kommentaar. Die Hersiene ROR sal toekomstige groei and ontwikkeling van hierdie munisipaliteit rig gebaseer op 'n ooreengekome visie en beginsels om sodoende struikelblokke te addresseer asook geleenthede te skep vir sosio-ekonomiese ontwikkeling.

On 2 December 2014, Council resolved to release the Draft Review of the Spatial Development Framework (SDF) for public comment. The reviewed SDF will guide future growth and development of the municipality based on an agreed vision and principles which are aimed at addressing challenges and creating opportunities for sustainable socio-economic growth.

Poskantoor weer by Malan-stasie JOHAN NEL Vir die eerste keer in bykans 40 jaar spog Malan-stasie, buite Wellington, weer met ’n eie poskantoor danksy die eienaar van die grond waarop die stasie en die ou poskantoor vir meer as 110 jaar die mense van die omgewing bedien het. Volgens Pierre-Jean Gerber, die eienaar van die ou stasiegebou, is Malan-stasie enkele jare gelede na ’n nuwe perseel verskuif toe ’n nuwe spoorlyn gelê is. Die plaasbewoners in die omgewing van die ou stasie het destyds almal gebruik gemaak van die poskantoor wat sedert 1904 in die stasiegebou gehuisves was. Die poskantoor is egter met die verskuiwing van die spoorlyn gesluit. Gerber het die ou stasiegebou en die omliggende gronde gekoop en toe hy onlangs ’n plaaswinkel naby die ou stasiegebou open, het hy besluit om ook ’n poskantoor deel van die winkel te maak. Hy het ’n stewige posbushouer, met 146 posbusse wat kan sluit, by ’n poskantoor wat gesluit het bekom en dit in sy nuwe winkel geïnstalleer. “Die plan het dadelik groot byval onder die omliggende plaaseienaars gevind. Brand (en water) verniel Crazy Store JOHAN NEL ’n Brand wat verlede Donderdagnag in die winkel van Crazy Store op Wellington uitgebreek het, het saam met die gepaardgaande pogings om dit te blus, ook groot waterskade in die winkel veroorsaak. Omstanders het agterna bespiegel dat die brand waarskynlik veroorsaak is deur ’n kortsluiting by een van die buisligte in die winkel.

In ’n poging om die brand met brandslange te blus, is verskeie groot vertoonvensters aan die voorkant van die winkel stukkend geslaan om water op die vlamme te spuit. Benewens brandskade was die voorraad in die winkel ná die brand deurdrenk met swart, rookbesoedelde water. ’n Amptenaar van Crazy Store het Vrydagoggend gesê dat ’n deeglike ondersoek na die oorsaak en

die omvang van die brand aan die gang is. Die brand- en waterskade was so omvangryk dat daar besluit is om die hele winkel nie alleen te herstel nie maar ook om die winkel splinternuut te herontwerp en te moderniseer. Eers dan sal die nuwe voorraad uitgepak kan word sodat die winkeldeure weer oor nagenoeg drie weke vir die publiek oopgemaak sal word.

Dr Tineke van Zyl 'n Nuwe Tandarts het so pas haar deure in Wellington oopgemaak. Alhoewel 'n boorling van die Noord-Kaap, het Tineke reeds goed kennisgemaak met die Drakenstein gebied as 'n leerder van Hoërskool Gimnasium. Na skool het sy eers 'n Toerismediploma verwerf, en daarna vir twee jaar as stoelassistent in Engeland gewerk. Nadat sy teruggekeer het na Suid-Afrika het sy haar diploma in Mondhigiëne voltooi. Sy het vir 'n paar jaar as Mondhigiënis gepraktiseer, maar het besef haar passie en droom is om as Tandarts te kwalifiseer. Dit het bewaarheid geword en sy het ook haar Nagraadse Diploma in Kaak-, Gesig en MondRadiologie voltooi. "Dit is my absolute passie om met mense te werk en te kan help waar ek kan. Ek het die voorreg gekry om my praktyk te vestig by Medicross in Wellington en ek sien nog baie jare van voorspoed en geluk wat hier voorlê.

RIDING FOR THE HORN: In December a team of five students, includ ing veterinary students, a nature guide and a couple of natureloving en gineering students, cycled more than 2 000 km from Johannesburg to Velddrif on mountain bikes, as part of the Riding for the Horn initiative. This is the initiative of a few young people who decided to stand together and to put their passion for wildlife, more specifically South Africa’s rhi nos, into action. The team members are Arno Scholtz, Ruan Janse van Rensburg, Henno Smit, Naomi Brand and Dalene van Staden. They not only created awareness but also raised more than R10 000 for the orga nisation, Save the Waterberg Rhino. Paarl was one of the group’s over night stops. Pink walk for PinkDrive Pink will be the order of the day on Saturday 31 January, when the first Pick n Pay Women’s Walk for the year sets off from the Coetzenburg sports grounds in Stellenbosch. Proudly decked out in their pink T-shirts, the aim of the walkers will not only be to raise funds for PinkDrive, a public benefit organisation that provides free breast-cancer screening for women around the country, but to also raise awareness of the importance of regular screenings. While it’s called a women’s walk, men are most welcome to join in the 5 km walk, so bring the whole family, or a group of friends and join in the fun. The walk isn’t timed, so you can do it at your own pace. The walk village will be set up at Coetzenburg sports grounds, which will also serve as the start and finish points of the walk. Kanon by Taalmonument afgevuur ’n Kanon sal Saterdag 31 Januarie om 12:00 by die Afrikaanse Taalmonument afgevuur word. Hierdie maandeliks plegtigheid word in samewerking met CAOSA (Cannon Association of South Africa) aangebied en sluit ’n kort praatjie oor die geskiedenis van Suid-Afrika se kanonne en die VOCkanonseinstelsel in, asook ’n demonstrasie van die gebruik van al die laaigereedskap. The 27 for Freedom Walk takes place on Saturday 7 February, at Drakenstein Correctional Services.

This day marks the 25th anniversary of former President Nelson Mandela’s release from Victor Verster Prison (now Drakenstein Correctional Services) and to commemorate this historic moment, the Drakenstein Correctional Services in partnership with the Drakenstein Municipality, the Cape Winelands District

Municipality, Capitec Bank, Old Mutual, Sanlam and Nolitha will stage the sixth annual 27 For Freedom Race. According to the Area Commissioner of Drakenstein, director Jeremy Matheyse, this event will be particularly significant since it would coincide with the quarter of a century celebrations since Madiba’s release from prison. “I therefore particularly call upon the communities within the Cape Winelands precincts to make a special effort to join us in

honouring our greatest statesman ever by walking or running in the paths where Madiba did before he took those historic revered steps to freedom,” Matheyse said. Besides the 50 m toddlers dash, 5 km, 10 km and 27 km races, athletes and visitors can again look forward to high-class entertainment, such as The Rockets. There will be a great selection of food and novelty stalls, a kiddies corner and several spot prizes (32” flat screen TV, a smart phone, Walka Portable TVs, and

more) to be won. The closing date for the 10 km and 27 km races are 25 January for manual entries and 1 February 2015 for online entries. The 5 km-race and 50 m-dash entries are open until race day. Entry forms are available at the Drakenstein Correctional Services, Drakenstein municipal offices, certain Capitec Bank branches, Sportsman’s Warehouse stores and at the 3@1 store at Paarl Mall.
