RESIDENTS of Paarl and Mbekweni were furious when they were left sitting in the dark on Sunday night, after the Municipality had shut down the electricity grid for essential repairs from 07:00 that morning. Despite an undertaking that the power would be switched on by five o’clock, the town remained dark until seven, and in many homes power was only restored after nine o’clock. Meanwhile people spent the dark evening sitting out the cold, angry that the repairs had not been undertaken during the summer months. Residents of Paarl East and Mbekweni were further angered when they saw the lights of homes on the slopes of Paarl Mountain switched on at seven, while they had to wait another hour or more. Afrikaans ‘sal bly leef’, sê Blacky Lise Beyers

’n PLAASLIKE uitvoerende vervaardiger van televisieproduksies, Blacky Swart, is goed op dreef om die Paarl as taalikoon te laat herleef. Swart, wat al verantwoordelik was vir televisieproduksies soos Kyknet se Net-vir-dieGrap en vele SuperSport produksies, staan op die drumpel om ’n breedvoerige televisiereeks te verfilm oor die Afrikaanse Taal. En waar is ’n beter plek om te begin as in die Paarl, waar dié taal se wortels as’t ware gesetel is? “Van Taalmonument tot Voortrekkermonument” is ’n televisiereeks van 13 episodes wat sal begin met die Afrikaanse Taalmonument en eindig by die Voortrekker monument om die invloed van Hollands, Frans, Engels en Duits onder Afrika-omstandighede aan die Kaap in die sewentiende eeu te illustreer, en wat daarna gebeur het. Kwessies wat aangepak sal word, is onder andere: Waar kom die Afrikaanse taal vandaan? Hoe het dit ontstaan en ontwikkel? Wie was die mense wat dit gepraat het? Hoe sien ander volkere en kulture die taal? Swart, ’n oud-Matie, het verlede jaar ná 35 jaar met sy gesin na die Paarl getrek. Swart vertel dat die Paarl hom juis gelok

Binnekort loods Swart, in samewerking met die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum, die Voetspore van Afrikaans inisiatief, wat ’n taalroete deur die Paarl sal insluit, vanaf die Taalmonument na Augusta Kleinbosch, waar die eerste Afrikaanse skool (die Hugenote Gedenkskool) geleë is. Municipality buys Ikhwezi Centre

THE Drakenstein Municipality has purchased the Ikhwezi Community Centre (formerly Vlakkeland manor-house) in Mbekweni for R420 000, after the Ikhwezi Trust was liquidated. Plans are to develop it as a skills centre, once the dilapidated buildings have been renovated. The theft continues

COPPER cable theft during the past years has cost Telkom alone hundreds of millions of rands. This does not include many other businesses who have also been severely affected by this scourge. And beyond the financial implications is the disruption of crucial services for many. Some are forced to switch to 3G phone links. It is evident that there is a huge syndicate at work encouraging this theft to line their pockets. This is indeed a very lucrative business as metal prices are high. It is also due to the middleman, the scrap dealer, who eagerly and illegally purchases the metal, that this theft continues. Recently the new law on second-hand goods came on the statute books, to curb the rampant theft of especially metal. This law aims to regulate the business of dealers in second-hand goods, as well as pawnbrokers in order to combat trade in stolen goods. Dealers must register at the police. Failing to do so he or she can be fined R1 million or spend ten years behind bars. Scrap dealers will have to be more vigilant when making purchases to ensure that these goods are not stolen or they can have their doors closed by the police.

Iron claw in velvet glove POST WE all know when it is getting cold. One has trouble moving the cats off one’s lap. They always squabble and swear over prime position until someone gets nicked – usually my hand. Kick them off and they just leap back like Australian throwing sticks. And, when its cold in bed, I am often tempted to ask the wife to just put on another cat. She may remind me that I already have two, usually inconveniently distributed, to share whatever heat we collectively may entice from the electric blanket. Or one cat will just climb precipitously up to the highest part of the wardrobe and then do a bungy jump (sans rope) on to the most sensitive part of my anatomy. Then he stalks off in a huff or hangs around with soft plaintive meows designed to make me feel guilty. Well, I must confess that I do not speak “cat”, not even “un peu”, “weinig” or just a smattering, but I can read the signs. I know their accents and habits differ but, like Cantonese or Mandarin, cat talk is all written or mouthed the same way. Verder spandeer hulle tans honderde duisende rande aan die restourasie van die munisipale kantore. Dis as gevolg van hierdie wanbesteding dat die Munisipaliteit nou meer as R200 miljoen moes leen. Nou verwag hulle dat die armes van Drakenstein dit moet terugbetaal. Wyk 14 verwerp hierdie lening en die feit dat armes se dienste nou gestaak word om fondse te styf. Ons versoek ernstig dog dringend dat afskakelings gestaak word, samesprekings gehou word om verantwoordbare oplossing te vind en dat werkskeppingsprojekte toeganklik moet wees, sodat die armes werk kan kry ten einde hul munisipale verpligtings na te kom. Die DA-beheerde Raad gee inderdaad baie om vir ons mense, daarom is ons besig om ons Munisipaliteit te herstruktureer tot ’n uitstekendeorganisasie.Ukanseker wees alle uitgawes word noukeurig geplan en beheer deur die Munisipale Bestuurder. Om ’n effektiewe diens te lewer, moet ’n personeelstruktuur met aanvaarbare werksomstandighede egter bestaan. Werkloosheid is ’n landwye krisis en nie maklik om aan te spreek nie, daarom is ons hooffokus werkskepping, ekonomiese groei en toerisme sodat geld na Drakenstein kan vloei. Selfs met min geld beskikbaar, het ons baie meer geld as enige vorige Raad bewillig vir werkskepping en ekonomiese groei.

En dit is juis die rede waarom Ikhwezi aangekoop is: dit gaan spesifiek vir die werkloses gebruik word as bedryfsgerigte opleidings- en werkskeppings-sentrum. Die aankoopprys was slegs R550 000, waarvan R130 000 in agterstallige dienstegelde weer teruggekry is, so dit het effektief R420 000 gekos wat ’n winskoop is vir 2,8 hektaar grond met uitgebreide geboue daarop en gewaardeer op R2,2 miljoen. Raadslid Lourens du Toit se sakevernuf het inderdaad ’n geleentheid geskep om ons arm mense te kan help. Die geboue is egter tansin’nverwaarloosdetoestand en moet herstel word, want mense moet in ’n waardige omgewing opleiding kry. Ons is in gesprek met verskeie private instansies vir skenkings en hulp om die programme te begin. Gesprekke het reeds met baie rolspelers begin oor spesifieke werkskeppingsprogramme. Die fokusgroepe in die eerste fase is werklose jongmense en enkelmoeders. Ek ontmoet hierdie week reeds twee vroue elk uit die eerste 6 wyke as stigtingskomitee vir ’n Vroueforum in Mbekweni waar opleiding, werkskepping en armoedeverligting ons fokus sal wees. Ook in Paarl-Oos word dieselfde beoog (onder leiding van die onderburgemeester) en die ander gebiede sal daarna volg. Ons is ook in gesprekke met lede van die meer welvarende gemeenskappe om betrokke te raak by ons agtergeblewe gemeenskappe. In samewerking met die Munisipale Bestuurder sal ‘n datalys van alle werklose persone in Drakenstein saamgestel word, sodat ons die volle omvang van die probleem kan bepaal. Programme word ook beplan om skoonmaakaksies in woongebiede uit te brei op ’n volhoubare basis en ’n werkindaba te hou. ’n Jeugforum word tans ook beplan ten einde jongmense se insette te verkry oor hul probleme.

Clowns at work? THANK YOU for the article in the Paarl Post of 10 May, as well as the beautifully stated letter by Rael, all in regards to the circus, aka road-works on the R301, led by the NMC/Heath & Brink clowns. Being a daily R301 user, as well as the owner of a business on this road, one starts to lose faith in the competency of the project managers/company when having to deal with seeing the majority of workmen standing around chatting or just watching one person work. All this talk about the weather having an influence on the work is utterly ludicrous. What do the people in Northern Europe or Scandinavia do for road works? I have serious doubt that they stop working. The actual fact might be that our local contractor doesn’t have the experience necessary to work in adverse weather conditions? The delays have put immense pressure on all businesses on this road, with extreme loss of income to all. With the same company doing numerous projects around the area one has to wonder if they didn’t bite off more than they can chew? As Rael stated, they obviously didn’t plan their materials properly, but then again it also didn’t deter them from ripping up more sections that they couldn’t complete! Lastly, I drive this road at very odd times of the night as well - whose job is it to make sure that the people manning the booths are actually awake and doing their job? I have come across the extras from Sleeping Beauty on numerous occasions, including 10 March and 14 April. When you actually bang the windows to wake them, you are treated like the transgressor. Maybe the answer to the penalties imposed on NMC is simple. Guest-house in Paarl attacked by robbers THE owners of a guest-house in Paarl were tied up and robbed over the weekend. The incident took place late on Sunday evening when two white men booked into a guest-house in Lower Plein Street. Shortly after this, they indicated to the owner that they would like to settle their account. At this stage, the owner’s wife was locking up the house when she was overpowered by two coloured men who came from outside. The couple were manhandled, threatened with a knife and tied up, after which the four robbers ransacked the house, tak-

ing cash, a television set, jewellery, cameras and cellphones. They fled in a Honda vehicle with a Free State registration number. A high alert was sent out to all surrounding police stations to be on the look out for the fugitives. Thereafter information was received and one suspect was arrested in Paarl East. THE Desmond Tutu TB Centre at Stellenbosch University has just completed an international study on TB, which included Mbekweni in Paarl. The study showed that one in fifty people here has TB and one in five children carry potential infection. The Zambia-South Africa TB and AIDS Reduction (ZAMSTAR) study, looked into which methods worked best to reduce TB in the community. The director of the Desmond Tutu TB Centre, Professor Nulda Beyers, reported back on the ZAMSTAR research to health care workers, school principals and members of the community at a meeting at the TC Newman clinic in Paarl on Monday. Charlotte het in verskeie komitees gedien waar sy ook haar merk gemaak het, soosdieVerfraaiingskomitee, Estetiese Komitee, Vriende van die Wellington en ook Ouma-Granny’s museums. Sy was die stigter van die Vriende van Ouma-GranCharlotte Cupido ny’s Huismuseum en ook die eerste voorsitter. Sy was ’n nooi Busby en is op 12 Mei 1921 gebore. DASSIES REUNION. Old girls of HS van der Walt High School in Paarl (which closed down 20 years ago), recently held a happy reunion in Paarl. Former students and staff travelled from all over the country to attend the event at the old school building (now Boland College Paarl’s Drakenstein campus), after making contact via facebook. The students were known as the “Dassies”, as the school was founded as an “industrial” school for girls in 1915. A centenary reunion is planned for 2015.

Literary festival a hit

Die doel van hierdie avontuur is om fondse in te samel vir die skoolprojekte van Orleansvale Primêr. Hulle vertrek alreeds op Maandag 2 Julie vanaf die skool na Knysna en sal elke dag ongeveer 100 km aflê tot Donderdag 5 Julie. Hulle sal bloedskenkklinieke fasiliteer op Worcester en George, saam met die WP Bloeddiens. Die Vrydag en Saterdag is ruskans voordat hulle die fietsren tussen Knysna en Wildernis en Knysna en Tsitsikama op Sondag 8 Julie aanpak. Die opbrengs sal onder andere aangewend word vir opgradering van die skool, die biblioteek, ’n speelpark vir graad R, veiligheidshekke, skoolmini-bussie en terreinverfraaiing. GESONDHEID. Tydens die Franschhoek Literêre Fees het die bekende komediant Pieter Dirk-Uys met die leerders van Hoërskool Franschhoek kom praat oor die waarde van boeke en lees asook die voorkoming van Vigs.

THE 6th annual Franschhoek Literary Festival was a great success according to organisers and audiences alike. While plenty of people took the opportunity of the beautiful weather to spend some time in the Franschhoek restaurants and surrounds; the real heat was felt inside venues where hot topics such as The In-between 80s, Freedom of Information, and On Being Bolshy were debated to overflowing houses. A total of 8 550 tickets were sold for the 90 events on offer – an increase of more than 2 000 tickets over last year’s festival. A third of the events sold out completely, with some reaching capacity well before the festival began. The inaugural Book Week for Young Readers took place this year, meaning that in the week prior to the Literary Festival, each of the 130 classrooms in the Franschhoek Valley received a visit from one of 50 children’s authors, who read to and interacted with over 4 000 learners. Through donations from a number of publishers, books were also placed in the school libraries.

Wellingtonner verrig diens in Indië DIE Wellington ACVV Dienssentrum was onlangs volgepak met mense wat na die vertellings van Joan Malan kom luister het. Dit was voorwaar ’n belewenis om saam met haar “in Kolkata tussen die armstes van die armes rond te beweeg”. Joan het, ná haar man Danie se dood in 2005, besluit om haar te wy aan welsynswerk en as vrywilliger Kolkata toe gegaan in Indië, Moeder Teresa se tuisstad en die hart van die “Missionaries of Charity”. Hier het Joan persoonlik ervaar wat Moeder Teresa se nalatenskap beteken, naamlik liefde in dade. Daar het sy ondervind dat daar ook blydskap en skoonheid in selfs die

haglikste omstandighede is. Joan was reeds vier keer in Kolkata en telkens het sy by die Heilsleër gaan bly in ’n armoedige gebied waar sy ’n kamer met 11 ander vrywilligers van die Missionaries of Charity gedeel het. Moeder Teresa het gesê dat heiligheid hande is wat dien en harte wat liefhê. Dit is hierdie leuse wat Joan wil uitleef, want hierdie merkwaardige Wellingtonner beplan om weer Kolkata toe te gaan. MUSEUMWEEK. Leerders van Wemmershoek Primêr het die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument besoek ter viering van Internasionale Museumdag. Die leerders het ’n program bygewoon oor omgewingsvolhoubaarheid wat in samewerking met Kaapse Natuurbewaring aangebied was. Die program het die leerders bekend gestel aan die ekosisteem en die mens se verhouding met die natuur ten opsigte van brandstigting, aardverwarming en waterbesoedeling en -besparing.

DEBAT. Drie leerders van Hoër Meisieskool Paarl, Louise King (links), Emma Wiehman en Jackie van Schalkwyk, het deelgeneem aan die DF Malan Dink-of-Sink-debatkompetisie. Hulle het twee debatte gewen en een verloor.

PROMISING CYCLIST. Ashleigh Parsons of Huguenot Primary achieved outstanding results at the SA Track Cycling Championships. She participated in races where boys and girls were in tough competition and won four gold medals. She is also the SA u.12 girl champion and was awarded National Colours.

BIKER. A Grade 12 learner of La Rochelle High, Michaele van den Heever, is a keen mountain-biker and took part in a 30 km marathon race in the Nuy Valley, where she came first in the ladies’ u.19 section. The following day, she participated in the Western Cape Cross Country Mountain-biking Series 2 Race, in which she was placed second.

BIATHLE. Twee broers Ulrich (links) en Henry le Roux van die Paarl Primêre Seunskool het aan die Boland biathle-kampioenskappe in die Strand deelgeneem. Ulrich het ’n goue medalje vir seuns o.10 gewen en Henry le Roux ’n silwer medalje vir seuns o.14. Hulle is beide in die Boland-biathlespan opgeneem.

Van links is Tammi Minnaar, Mandi Mongwanyana, Heinrich Portwig en Tori Minnaar. Tammi en Tori is in die o.16A-dogterspan opgeneem, terwyl Heinrich Portwig sy plek in die o.16A-seunspan losgespeel het. Mandi is in die o.16B-dogterspan opgeneem.

SKUTS. Tilanie (links) en Felrie Oettle van Gimnasium Hoërskool het deelgeneem aan die skietkampioenskappe van die SA Pistol Association. Tilanie het ’n goue medalje verower terwyl Felrie ’n bronsmedalje ontvang het. Tilanie word ook ingesluit in die SANSSU nasionale skietspan wat Suid-Afrika in Londen gaan verteenwoordig tydens die Britse internasionale pistoolskietkompetisie.

’n Wildsbok is meer as net biltong DIS weer eens tyd dat die jaggewere uit die kluis gehaal word, skoongemaak en goed geolie word. Want binnekort gaan die paaie vol viertrekvoertuie wees wat noorde toe mik om wild te gaan haal. My grootste opwinding van ’n jag is die avontuurlustige disse waarmee daar vorendag gekom word nadat die bokke afgeslag is. Met ’n jag verlede jaar in die Namib-Kalahari het ek tog te lekker gespeel. Dit is veels te dikwels dat jagters hul bokke skiet en dan tevrede is met net die beste snitte. Natuurlik is dit heerlik om die boude en filette huis toe te neem, maar daar is soveel meer aan ’n wildsbok. Die harsings byvoorbeeld. Dit saag ons uit en braai dit dan in ’n pan met botter, ’n proesel knoffel en ’n knerts suurlemoensap. Manna uit die hemel. My basis vir enige pot is sowat ’n koppie elk fyngekapte ui, wortel en seldery, en ’n eetlepel knoffel. Dit word stadig in olyfolie gebraai totdat dit byna deurskynend is. Die dikgesnyde wildskenkels, of hele nek, kom dan hierby. Voeg dan ’n blik tamaties hierby, ’n koppie Old Brown Sjerrie en ’n blik bier. Die pot moet nou vir ’n uur en ’n half stadig prut, voordat die groente bykom. Ek hou van babawortels, -aartappels en -uitjies, en murgpampoentjiesensampioene. Natuurlik kom die twee laasgenoemdes eers ’n bietjie later in die pot, want die harde groente vat mos langer om sag te word. Daar is min dinge wat so lekker is as in die donker nag van die winter in die Karoo of Namibië om ’n kampvuur te sit en so ’n pot te geniet saam met ’n glas rooiwyn.

Standup comedy nights launched LOL Comedy Nights hosted at the Old Mill Theatre in Paarl are the start of the valley’s very first stand-up comedy evenings. The brainchild of young local actor, John Koopman, the idea is to gather the best comedic talent – whether an established comedian, a businessman, a rugby player or even a teacher – and showcase their talent to local audiences. First to take to the stage on Thursday 31 May at 19:30 is Siv Ngesi. Siv, aged 27, has been in the business of comedy from a young age. His comedy show Dekaf won the Golden Ovation Award for the best comedy show at the National Arts Festival. His most recent projects include a lead role in League of Glory on MNet, Kululeka on SABC 1 and 2 and future episodes of Stokvel. Internationally, Siv has worked with Clint Eastwood, Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman on Invictus, and Kiefer Sutherland and Jon Voigt on 24 Redemption. Siv will be doing a 30 minute routine on the night. The evening will be hosted by Koopman also known as Mr Cooper, who will be doing a 20 minute performance. Part of the evening is also a short open mic session where members of the audience are invited to come on stage and share a joke or two for a maximum of five minutes. South African Sopranos perform THE South African Sopranos, a group that consists of five opera singers (Jo-Nette le Kay, Lynelle Kenned, Goitsemang Lehobye, Marlie Kock and Janelle Visagie), will perform on 30 May at 19:00 at Heuer in Stellenbosch. They will be directed by Niël Rademan and accompanied by Elna van der Merwe. Between the seven of them,

MINISTER VISITS MBEKWENI. As part of the Budget Vote outreach, Minister Collins Chabane (Minister in the Presidency) and his deputy, Obed Bapela, visited Klapmuts and Mbekweni recently to promote service delivery to the public. The minister highlighted the purpose of the Thusong Service Centre programme. Feedback from the public reflected their problems with housing. Complaints were also raised regarding the influx of foreign nationals which hampers the small business development growth. Youth development programme is the area was also seen as a priority. ENTRIES for the First Round of the Bollinger Exceptional Wine Service Award 2012 for sommeliers are now open and candidates are urged to enter soon, as entries close on 31 May. The winner will win a trip to France including a trip to the prestigious House of Champagne Bollinger. This annual competition, which is aimed at enhancing and recognising the calibre of local sommeliers and wine service staff, was launched in 2011 and proved to be a resounding success. The competition is a joint initiative between specialist wholesaler Vinimark The Wine Company (importer of Champagne Bollinger) and The Reciprocal Wine Trading Company, importers and distributors of Riedel Glassware. Neil Grant, Chairperson of the South African Sommelier Association (SASA) and one of the judges of the 2011 Competition, says: “Wine service has a poor history in South Africa and

Old Mutual Trophy competition reveals great wines from South Africa THE 2012 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show looks set to consolidate its position as the most important arbiter of the top end of the South African wine industry. With 1023 entries – fractionally down on last year’s 1059 and slightly up on 2010’s 1014 – it has not succumbed to the cutbacks which appear to have afflicted other competitions. Despite enormous financial pressures – the result of the global financial crisis and the continued strength of the Rand - 224 wine producers delivered an average of five different wines each to South Africa’s most important wine bench-marking event. Chairman and judge Michael Fridjhon was particularly pleased with the spread of entries. “In the past,” he said, “the focus has often been on a few high profile classes, at the expense of the more niche categories where increasingly we find the undiscovered vinous treasures. This year the representation across the classes suggests a broader, as well as a greater depth of talent.” Shiraz nevertheless remains the largest class with 136 submissions, followed by

submissions – and reveal what is clearly a change in focus amongst the country’s super-premium wineries. “In the past, they were intent on using the show results to drive sales of current release wines,” observes Fridjhon. “Now they are also sending a message about the age-ability and age-worthiness of their best vintages.” Recognising the importance of the rigour which goes into the Show’s judging methodology, Old Mutual takes the top wines on a national roadshow to introduce them to discerning wine lovers in seven cities in Southern Africa. The 2012 Show results will be announced at the awards function to be held at the Mount Nelson Hotel on 30 May and will be detailed in a new look Icons guide which will be published at the same time. The 2012 panel comprised three international judges and six local judges covering a broad range of expertise. The international judges were: Brian Croser (Winemaker and industry icon, Australia); Anthony Rose (UK and Asian wine columnist) and Tom Cannavan (online wine guru: www.winepages.com and UK wine broadcaster).

On 17 and 18 May, thirty students from Nederburg Primary School, Paulus Joubert Secondary School and young people who have dropped out of school, met with students from West Chester University in Pennsylvania, USA, to discuss their dreams for the future and the stumbling blocks they have to overcome. The 36 students and lecturers from West Chester University are in South Africa on an educational trip with the theme, A Legacy Of Leadership: Messages From Africa. These interviews formed part of WCU’s ongoing relationship with the schools in Paarl East

which they serve and visit on a regular basis. All the data will form part of a multi-national, multi-school project called Dream-Catchers, which Mission Vision Tours from South Africa have initiated as part of their community involvement through international tourism. The students are exposed to developmental needs of South Africa to train them to become involved in sustainable projects of upliftment; thus creating opportunities of hope. The students donated several items to both schools. Results will be made available in South Africa and the USA, says Deon Kitching, CEO of Mission Vision Tours.

A countrywide roadshow will follow immediately after the results are announced on May 30. Public tastings take place on Friday 15 June at the CTICC (17:00-20:30). Tickets are available via Computicket at www.computicket.com and cost R100 if purchased by 27 May or R120 thereafter or at the door.

Still time to take part in 100Miler

CYCLISTS who want to take part in Saturday’s 100Miler (160 km), with a total elevation of 2252 m can still register. Registration is today from 16:00 till 19:00 at Chris Willemse Cycles, Willow Bridge in Tyger Valley, on Friday 25 May, from 12:00 till 19:00 at the Dirtopia Trail Centre at Delvera and on race day from 06:00 at the Swartland Cellars. Action will start at 07:30 at the Swartland Winery outside Malmesbury. This event is not for the single track junkies. It is a gruelling endurance race with the route containing a little bit of everything including farm track, gravel roads, 4x4 track, railway crossings as well as wide open roads. And don’t forget about the climbs - short steep ones and long not such steep ones. The first section (32 km) has several undulating climbs and

narrow jeep tracks and it won’t be an easy start to the day. For the next 21 km the terrain is flat, with fast open roads and some minor climbs. It will be good to use this section wisely. The following 28 km to waterpoint two will include a demanding 5 km climb. From waterpoint two till the lunch stop (31km) is another easy section - depending on Mother Nature of course. If the north-easterly picks up, it could prove to be difficult. The next 31 km will be demanding on already tired legs with several undulating climbs. The last 19 km has more undulating climbs, but also some downhills for respite. There will be five water points and three spectator points. Pollard het vandeesweek aan Paarl Post gesê dat hy ongelooflik verras was om die nuus te hoor. “Natuurlik moes ek eers by almal toestemming kry om in die oefengroep ingesluit te word,” vertel Pollard wat vanjaar reeds 118 punte vir Paarl Gimnasium se o.19A-span aangeteken het. Pollard, wat vanjaar in verskeie wedstryde as Speler van die Wedstryd aangewys is, het seersekerlik bygedra dat Gimnasium nou die nommer een rugbyskool in Suid-Afrika is. “Wat in my guns tel, is dat ek groot is en kontak kan maak, op

die aanval en die verdediging. Ek is glad nie bang om kontak te maak nie,” vertel hy. “Ek geniet dit vreeslik baie by die oefengroep en leer verskriklik baie. Dawie Theron, die afrigter, is ongelooflik. “Die afrigtingspan is baie professioneel. En die spelers is ook great”, sê hy. Pollard sou gisteraand vir 40 minute ’n kans kry om homself te bewys. Louis Koen, oud-Springboklosskakel en sportbestuurder van Paarl Gimnasium, is ook baie in sy noppies met dié besluit en hy ondersteun dit ten volle. “Ek dink Handré is volwasse genoeg en ek ondersteun die besluit ten volle,” sê hy. Christoff Lötter, afrigter van Gimnasium se eerste span, is ook baie trots op Pollard. “’n Mens kan dit nie van hom ontneem nie. Dawie Theron het ons verlede week oor sy besluit ingelig,” sê hy. Theron het aan Paarl Post gesê dat hy vir Pollard al ’n geruime tyd dophou. “Hy het baie potensiaal en sy vaardigheid en fisiese voorkoms maak hom ideaal. “Vanaf verlede jaar het hy baie ontwikkel en dit maak van hom ’n baie sterk kandidaat om in die groep ingesluit te word,” sê Theron. Gerugte wil dit ook hê dat Pollard volgende jaar by die Blou Bulle gaan aansluit.
