Kavaliers klop SWD Arende

The recently released crime statistics show both good news and bad news for local residents. Paarl Cluster has one of the highest number of business burglaries in the Western Cape. PAGE 2

Dalk as party van julle in my huis bly, sal julle verstaan hoe erg dit is.

* Illegal drag racing on the streets of Paarl and surrounding areas is still a problem for both residents and law enforcers.

Tienermeisie, tuinier trek vermeende dief vas MARYKE SWART

“You should be of one mind, full of sympathy toward each other, loving one another with tender hearts.” 1 Peter 3:8

* A learner at Girls High School and a gardener managed to stop an alleged burglar in her tracks.

Crime stats reveal both successes and concerns Paarl Cluster is one of the five clusters with the highest number of business burglaries in the Western Cape. This was disclosed when the 2013/2014 crime statistics were released last week. Paarl police station was among the top five police stations in the same category, showing a significant increase in business burglaries with 62 more cases reported than the previous book year. Residential burglaries, however showed a decrease in numbers, with 134 less cases reported. The 2013/2014 crime statistics were released on Friday by national Police Commissioner, Genl Riah Phiyega and Police Minister Nkosonathi Nhleko. In the Western Cape, contact crimes in total increased by 5% from the previous book year. Murders were up by 12,8%, attempted murders by 2,5%, and aggravated robbery by 16,7% which includes sub-categories of robberies at residential premises (14%) and non-residential premises (11,5%). In the Boland region, Paarl police station showed little increase in murders with only two more cases reported.

Sexual offences were down by 16 cases, while common assault went up by 43 cases and common robbery by 34 cases. Aggravated robbery was down by 20 cases, although robberies at residential premises and non-residential premises showed a slight increase. More cases of motor vehicle and motorcycle theft and theft out of or from motor vehicles were reported than in the previous period. Paarl East’s efforts to decrease contact crimes within the area paid off, paid off with all but common assault showing a decline. Business burglary increased by only two cases while residential burglaries remained consistent. Groot Drakenstein showed a slight increase in murders, attempted murders, common assault, common robbery and aggravated robbery as well as theft from and out of motor vehicle. Business burglaries and residential burglaries showed declining numbers. Franschhoek police station had twice as many murders reported than in 2012/2013 and five more case of sexual crimes, but otherwise showed a decrease in contact

crimes. Property related crimes relating to residential burglaries and business burglaries increased. Klapmuts had three less murders while sexual offences remained consistent. Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and aggravated robbery including the sub-categories of residential and business robberies increased. Residential and business burglaries both showed a sharp incline. In Mbekweni, attempted murder, aggravated robbery and business robbery were the only crimes which showed an increase of more than five additional cases than reported in the previous period. The number of murders reported at Wellington police station in 2013/2014 remained consistent with what was reported in 2012/2013 while sexual crimes showed an increase of an additional 17 cases reported. Other contact crimes showing an increase are attempted murder, common assault and common robbery. *For the comprehensive crime statistics visit the SAPS website at www.saps.gov.za. * Go to www.paarlpost.co.za and vote on our poll about the crime stats.

Hulle het geld by hom geëis.

Manuel Brown (41) het in ’n opslaanhut agter sy suster, Anna-Marie Damonse, beter bekend as Koela, se erf gewoon. Ure later

het ek net gehoor hoe Manuel gil. Later het hy na my geroep: ‘Koela, Koela, help my, asseblief!’ * A man of Loverslane recently died in his burning shack.

Take a break and have a braai As I write this, I am sitting on my beloved Paarl Mountain at Christmas Camp. My fire is burning and the steak is waiting to hit the coals. I have just returned to Paarl from the epic National Braai Tour, which took me across the country with a bunch of selected braai enthusiasts. We travelled from Johannesburg to Paarl, crossing the Free State, Northern Cape, Eastern and Southern Cape, until we reached the green grass of the Boland. The Braai Tour is an initiative of Jan Braai. The aim of this tour was to get the nation geared up for National Braai Day, which took place yesterday on Heritage Day, 24 September. And yes, there is no better way of celebrating our heritage than sitting around a fire, getting ready to braai something over the coals. Jan started Braai Day 10 years ago in order to unite South Africans around a braai fire, celebrate our heritage and restore pride in our national flag. Since then South Africans across the world have embraced this initiative. For eight days on tour we passed through beautiful towns, each night setting up camp in a spectacular SANPark, and, of course, braaiing at every opportunity. There were 130 people from all walks of life on the tour. We were divided into teams of four, each team travelling in their own vehicle, camping, cooking and celebrating together for the duration. I had no idea who my teammates were until my arrival in Johannesburg. Things could seriously have gone wrong if our personalities had clashed. But to my relief, the three young men who I was teamed up with were a treat. And after getting to know each other better, it was evident that we all came from completely different backgrounds. But the adventure, the numerous daily braais, and a mutual love of our country brought us together with no problem whatsoever. Across the 2 200 km that we travelled, there were many who wanted to join us around the braai, but unfortunately the powers-that-be have not embraced Jan Braai’s

braai day initiative. They reckon that he has boycotted Heritage Day. Sorry, but what bull! Now, for the first time, Heritage Day is actually being celebrated as it should be, with South Africans being strongly reminded of their unique heritage. It is perhaps one of the only public holidays which now has true significance - not just another day off with no meaning, except to sleep in late. Just take a look at other national days across the globe, such as Independence Day on the 4th of July in America. During this day all Americans fly their flags high and with great pride celebrate their own heritage. So why can we not do what we love doing best on Heritage Day and braai. And here I sit in solitude on Paarl Mountain. After ending my Braai Tour barely twelve hours ago, wanting to celebrate a bit of Paarl’s heritage. The first European settlers named Paarl Mountain ‘Pearl Mountain’ because of the giant granite rocks that glimmer like pearls when wet. But the original inhabitants, the Khoi, called it tortoise mountain because, from certain angles, the rocks resemble a tortoise. Christmas Camp was so named almost a century ago when the Grundlingh and Perold families ascended the mountain for their Christmas holiday with horse carts laden with camping gear and produce. It is a natural campsite with the very old wild olive trees protecting visitors from the elements. On a large granite rock the Christmas Camp symbol is preserved, followed by the names of the children that made their arrival each year. This too is part of Paarl’s rich heritage. And as my fire slowly turns into coals, I think of all the wonderful parts of the country that I have travelled through and all the colourful people that I have met and who I am proud to call compatriots. May National Braai Day in conjunction with Heritage Day grow from strength to strength, making us all proudly South African.

Ek sal graag wil verneem of eni-

Thank you for support for Boland School of Autism The staff and Carla and Volker Gast of Style for Hair, would like to thank all of their clients, friends and family for their wonderful support during the charity auction and dance which we held at short

notice at the German Club on Saturday. At the end of the evening we were able to hand over a cheque to the value of R50 000 to the Boland School of Autism.

SAPS goes on shopping spree We were having lunch at John Dory’s at the Paarl Mall on Sunday 7 September at 15:30. Much to our dismay a police vehicle, “crime investigation unit”, registration BSX 481B Nissan doublecab bakkie, parked in a disabled parking and picked up two ladies in casual clothes laden with several grocery bags. They had clearly been shopping. What would this have to do with official police crime investigation? Will anyone be held accountable?

SHOCKED PAARL

Paarl police spokesperson, Capt Louise du Plessis, said the vehicle was not one of theirs and that she would forward the complaint to the relevant station commander.

We would also like to thank Robert and Heidi Knorr of the Paarl German Club for their kind support that evening.

STYLE FOR HAIR PAARL

Thank you for helping me when I fell ill Herewith I would like to thank the managers and staff and customers of Red Mountain Spur in Paarl Mall for their undivided help when I fell ill inside their premises on Sunday 14 September. To the paramedics, Bester and Adonis, thanks for your medical assistance. The Paarl Hospital management and staff, doctors and nurses, etc - the hospital looks immaculate. To my family and friends, thank you for being so concerned about me. It is indeed in times like these that the song really has its meaning: You never walk alone.

Be on the look out for these con artists ‘from Malaysia’ As a local businessman I would like to warn the public of a crooked couple who are stealing from unsuspecting business people. I too was victim to their shenanigans recently. The couple entered my shop in Klein Drakenstein, claiming to be visitors from Malaysia. They made a small purchase during which money changed hands and started to chat with my shop assistant, telling him how they were enjoying their stay in Paarl. They were very friendly and we really thought they were tourists. They then asked whether we did not have a R200 note for them,

the one with Nelson Mandela’s image on, as they want it as a keepsake and they will in turn hand us two R100 notes in exchange for it. I took out my wallet, which had a substantial amount of money in it, to see whether I did have any R200 notes. I did not and told my shop assistant to look in the till. I put my wallet back in my pocket and the visitors were still chatting to me. When they eventually left my shop, I felt for my wallet and it was gone, together with a few thousand rands. I ran out of the shop and there

was no sign of the two. I even went looking for them in my car. But they had just vanished. The two were well-dressed and well-spoken and the woman had a tattoo on her hand which looked very much like some kind of cross. I want to warn others of this so that they do not become a victim like me. These two are very smooth and the fact that my wallet disappeared was like magic because I did not feel a thing. Please be warned.

waar spanlede geblinddoek was, bietjie vasgeval.

Missing woman’s body found in river The body of a woman who went missing two weeks ago, has been recovered in the Berg River near O.R Block, Mbekweni. According to the spokesperson for Mbekweni police, Sergeant Nceba Vanqa, 19-yearold Vuyiseka Daluka’s decomposed body was found on 18 September around 09:30 floating near a tree trunk in the river. Daluka’s boyfriend, who reported her missing at the Mbekweni police station on the 6 September, identified her body by the clothes she was wearing the day she went

missing, and the traditional beads on her wrists and ankles. Her body was removed by forensic pathologists to determine the cause of death. The autopsy showed no signs or marks on her body that might have indicated that she was murdered. Only a small amount of sand was found inside her stomach. The circumstances surrounding her death are thus still unclear but police have ruled out murder and therefore have also finalised their investigation into the matter.

Kaartjies is R90 by 083 564 0056.

Dan Patlansky will perform in Paarl on Friday. Supreme guitarist Dan Patlansky, with his new album Dear Silence Thieves, can be seen and heard at the Old Mill Theatre on Friday at 20:00. As this is his seventh release in a little over a decade, all ten of Dan’s new album’s original, electrically charged and blues-infused chapter further reinforces just why he enjoyed an invite from the likes of Bruce Springsteen to open his High Hopes show this past Feb-

ruary. After having played at the Horstens Blues Festival in Denmark last year, Patlansky received a summons to headline the November 2014 event. Ever since his debut album, Standing at the Station, followed by his 2004 major label True Blues, Patlansky has been immersing himself in the rich and rollicking world of blues rock music.

Kavaliers ’n stewige 17-0 voorsprong besorg.

Java MTB challenge at Van Loveren Chase the thrill of excitement in fresh country air by signing up for the 2nd annual Van Loveren’s Java MTB Challenge, which takes place on Saturday 4 October at Van Loveren Family Vineyards in the Robertson Valley. Runners can join in too, by entering a new 10 km vineyard trail run across the farm. Riders can choose between four MTB trails varying in distance, terrain and technical difficulty, catering for all levels - from children and beginners through to the seasoned mountain biker. Java MTB is a PPAendorsed event and was adjudged the “Best New PPA Event” last year. There will be activities for the whole family to enjoy, with prizes and lucky draws of over R40 000 up for grabs. Enjoy the day with great music to

set the mood, plenty of food stalls and the basket of Van Loveren’s famous activities such as food and wine pairings, and tasty meals in the farm bistro, Christina’s. Route descriptions The 8 km MTB route is an easy, non-technical fun ride suitable for children, a perfect family event. The 20 km route is ideal for beginners with rewarding vineyard and valley views. The 80 km is a gruelling route for top riders only. It includes many sections of the 2014 ABSA Cape Epic route, virgin territory and custombuilt single tracks. The 1 800 m elevation will challenge even the most seasoned rider, making this an excellent training race for the “Bridge Cape Pioneer Track” and “To Hell and Back” events.

The new 10 km trail run is a very scenic route that crosses the Breede River, taking runners along vineyards and across the Elandsberg Mountain. Don’t be fooled by the distance: the 350 m elevation and rocky terrain will make you look forward to the finish line. The event is held as fund-raiser for a number of beneficiaries including the main one, Robertson Preparatory School. The chief sponsors of the day are Van Loveren, Pick ‘n Pay and Hi-Q Robertson, with additional generous sponsorship from Lelienfontein Vine Growers, Roelou Barry Ford, Imvusa, Tekco Packaging and Cape Winelands District Municipality. For entries visit www.javamtb.co.za. For enquiries, contact Van Loveren on 023 615 1505.
