A MBEKWENI mother is experiencing sleepless nights after the inexplicable disappearance of her 6-year-old daughter. Asemahla Ntsabo was last seen on Saturday evening where she had been playing with friends barely 50 metres from her home in Drommedaris Street, a stoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s throw away from the Mbekweni railway station. She returned home to her mother, Ntombizodwa, at 17:30, before going off to her friends again. When she had not returned by 18:00, her mother went to look for her, but her friends said that she had gone home. Her frantic mother alerted neighbours who started to scour the area. The police were later notified and a full scale search proceeded into the night. The search continued on Sunday and Monday, also with the help of the K-9 dog unit.

The banks of the nearby Berg River were thoroughly searched as well as the length of the railway line in Mbekweni, but still there was no sign of Asemahla. Ntombizodwa said that her child often played with friends, but always returned home and never wandered far. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a blue skirt and light pink T-shirt. She is of small build and has braided pony-tails. Anyone who thinks that they saw her is asked to contact the Mbekweni police station urgently at 021 868 9900 or Missing Children SA at 072 647 7464. * There is still no sign of Amila Mahlamvu, the five-year-old boy from Franschhoek who went missing in an informal settlement in April last year. Personeel van Charleston Hill Sekondêr, wat vanjaar sy 21ste bestaansjaar vier, het met die aanbreek van die skooljaar verneem dat vyf lugreëlaars ter waarde van R36 000 gesteel is. Die skool het ook vyf rekenaars, een drukker, een modem en ’n elektriese klok verloor. “Ons skoolgebou is van ’n ligte montasiestruktuur en dus is dit makliker vir diewe om deur die mure te boor. Mense moet oplettend wees en die polisie skakel as hulle iemand sien inbreek,” sê adjunkhoof Cyril van Wyk. “Die skool, wat nie skoolgeld hef nie, word finansieel swaar getref deur inbrake, wat beteken onvoorsiene uitgawes vir herstelwerk styg.” Paulus Joubert Sekondêr moes twee weke na mekaar vier van hul deurpanele vervang, nadat diewe geslaag het om dit albei kere te steel. Ons subsidieer ook skole wat aansoek doen met gewapende reaksie en monitering.” Verder spoor hy skole aan om hulle alarmstelsels gereeld te toets om te verseker dat dit wel in ’n werkende toestand is. Sy raad aan skole is om ’n netwerk in plek te stel wat insluit die sektorpolisie, buurtwag, die gewapende reaksiemaatskappy van die skool en ouers en leerders wat rondom die skool woon om ’n oog te hou. “Kry daagliks iemand om ’n draai by die skool te maak. Rapporteer verdagate optrede onmiddellik aan die polisie. Tree chopper taken to court A PAARLITE who cut down four municipal trees in the leafy neighbourhood Vrykyk last year, is to be taken to court by the Municipality. The four Pride of India trees in Weltevreden Street, at the corner of Treurnicht Street, were chopped down on 24 March by the owner of the house at 14 Weltevreden Street, Mr R Gray. Initially, a municipal official requested that he desist from pruning the trees, and gave him a fine of R100. Gray continued and eventually chopped down four trees in front of his house. The Municipality subsequently sent him an invoice for R4487 which represents the replacement value of the trees (according to the British Tree Formula)

and gave him until 20 May to pay for the damage. As Gray has refused to pay the amount, the Municipality is now proceeding with a civil suit for damages, in order to send out a strong message against destruction of municipal property and the chopping down of trees without permission. Albert van der Merwe, head of the Municipality’s parks division, said that residents cannot do as they please on municipal property. “If anyone has a problem with a tree on municipal property, they must contact our parks division on 021 807 4500. We will investigate the situation and ensure that the correct procedures are followed.” Van der Merwe added that trees on private property which are problematic, can also be reported to the Municipality.

Gesie en komitee gaan nou ‘volspoed vorentoe’ NÁ ses maande van oriëntering het die Uitvoerende Burgemeester, adv Gesie van Deventer, op die eerste Burgemeesterskomiteevergadering op 13 Januarie ’n aankondiging gemaak dat sy en haar komitee die jaar gaan afskop met ’n veldtog genaamd “Volspoed Vorentoe”. Die veldtog sal hoofsaaklik die optimalisering van dienslewering aanspreek, spesifiek uitstaande en agterstallige aangeleenthede. Die sperdatum vir fase 1 is 31 Maart. As ’n vertrekpunt het die Burgemeester en haar Burgemeesterskomitee saam met senior amptenare op 19 Januarie ’n feitereis onderneem na die brandpuntareas van Drakenstein. Gedurende die toer is verskeie areas besoek om ’n prioriteitslys op te stel. Die Burgemeester en haar komitee sal nou ná bespreking met die

senior amptenare besluit watter take voor die eerste sperdatum aangepak sal word op die lys om dienslewering op voetsoolvlak te verbeter. Raadslid Van Deventer het dit beklemtoon dat sy en haar komitee baie ernstig en doelgerig is om die prioriteitslys te implementeer. Berg River blues as homeless take over Lise Beyers THE scenic Berg River in central Paarl still remains a bone of contention. Not only has the Arboretum here become notorious due to muggings and robberies, but the banks of the river have become a public wash, bathing and partying area. This is especially obvious early in the morning when numerous homeless....people strip naked to do their daily ablutions in the river. Washing is also done in the riverandthenhungalongthebanks to dry. Late afternoons and weekends, vehicles filled with partygoers ascend upon the banks near the CBD, openly consuming alcohol and playing loud music. The owner of a guest-house along the river embankment in Churchill Street, Brian Alley, says that his guests daily have to endure these unsightly practices along “one of the most beautiful areas of Paarl. “Notonlyisthewashingandlitter that is spread along the embankment unsightly, but it is unacceptable that people are bathing naked in the river. “Then public drinking

by rowdy individuals who play loud music from their vehicles, ensues. This can go on until midnight some evenings, disrupting residents in the area.” A municipal sign clearly warns that no drinking and music is allowed on the banks of the river and vehicles are also not allowed access here, but these regulations are blatantly ignored in broad daylight. “Occasionally law-enforcement officers will appear when we complain, but once they have turned their backs, the antics take place again.” Alley says that this is negatively impacting on his business. “I have many guests staying here, including foreigners, and this conveys a very bad image of Paarl as a tourist destination. We are one of the very few towns which have such a beautiful river running through its centre. The river should be a tourist attraction.” Whatisalsoworryingisthefact that people swim next to the weir which has in the past claimed lives, despite a warning sign, and most recently, a new fence on the bank. It is also a known fact that vagrants have made this area their home, living under both the Market Street and Lady Grey Street bridges. This has led to many crimes taking place here, such as drug peddling, the dealing in stolen goods,andlastyearawomanwas murdered under one of the bridges and her body dumped in the river.

Moordenaar kry sy loon ’n INWONER van die Paarl, Martin Geel (33) van Amstelhof, het Maandag ’n pleitooreenkoms met die staat aangegaan en is tot 25 jaar gevangenisstraf gevonnis vir moord. Geel het erken dat hy en ’n vriend op 18 Februarie verlede jaar naby die Bergrivier Boulevard vir Aletta Sias gedood het deur haar verskeie kere met ’n mes te steek. Sy het gesien hoe hulle ’n persoon aanrand en hulle het besluit om haar stil te maak. Streeklanddros Patrick Ross het die skuldig pleit aanvaar. Nadat die staat met die familie van die oorledene en die ondersoekbeampte gekon-

sulteer het, is daar oor ’n vonnis ooreengekom met die staat. Die feite toon dat almal langs die Bergrivier gebly het en dat die drank ’n rol gespeel het. Die hof het die misdaad as wreedaardig en brutaal beskryf. “Geen mens verdien om so te sterf nie. Hierdie tipe geweld raak te algemeen in Suid-Afrika veral in die lig van ons nuwe demokrasie,” het Ross gesê. Geel se medepligtige, Johannes November, is ook tot 25 jaar vir dieselfde daad gevonnis, omdat hulle ‘n gemeenskaplike opset gehad het naamlik om haar te dood.

Gevind DIE liggaam van ’n man van Kuilsrivier wat vermis geraak het, is aangetref op ’n plaas in Suid-Agter-Paarl. Victor Swartz (23) het sy woning in Kuilsrivier verlede Maandag om 06:00 verlaat vir ’n mediese ondersoek by Karl Bremer Hospitaal. Hy het daar mediese behandeling ontvang vir ’n hartprobleem. Hierna sou hy verder per trein na Klapmuts reis om by familietegaankuier. Hy het egter nooit op gedaag nie. Twee dae later is sy liggaam in die veld op ’n plaas gevind.

Safety paramount for Sunday’s cycle race THE Paarl Rotary Club has pulled out all the stops to make the Bouckaert-Soenen Paarl League Ride & MTB Challenge on Sunday the best ever. Particular attention has been paid to ensure riders’ safety and the Drakenstein Municipality’s traffic department will play a major role in regulating traffic through the various stages of Sunday morning’s races. The day’s races start at the Paarl Boys’ High sports grounds in Brug Street at 06:30 and ends by 12:30. There will be traffic disruption in the vicinity of the sports grounds, along sections of Main Street and Berg River Bou-

levard in Paarl and the main routes towards Wellington, Hermon, Riebeek Kasteel, Malmesbury, Paardeberg and Agter Paarl. Access to Jan Phillips Drive and the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve will be restricted during the races and riders and spectators are reminded to leave only their tyre tracks and footprints behind on this natural local treasure. Taking back our river

IT is high time that the community of Paarl steps in as taxpaying citizens and take back the Berg River. For a long time now it has been no secret that the Arboretum is no longer the safe tree park which it is meant to be. In the past holiday season alone, two attacks took place and at least one of the victims was a foreign tourist. But the rest of the river banks in central Paarl are being equally abused. Although the Municipality does take care to see to the trimming of the banks and general maintenance, the area is being overrun by vagrants, loiterers and litterers. And despite clearly displayed signs forbidding camping, the consumption of alcohol, the playing of music and more, these regulations are blatantly ignored. Even sexcapades have been openly displayed here. Paarl is one of the very few towns in South Africa which has such a spectacular river running through its heart, but law enforcement is sadly lacking. What should be the pride of Paarl and a tourist attraction, is becoming an embarrassment. Residents await municipal action with bated breath.

Seker omdat hy ’n sakeman was, kon hy ‘daardie dae’ behalwe ’n bietjie tuinmaak en enkele hoenders, ook ‘n paar varke op sy eie werf aanhou om as’t ware lewensbelangrike voorraad op te bou. Dáárdie varke moes gevoer word en hulle stapelvoedsel, soos die seisoen dit toelaat, was die akkers wat byderhand was. Dit was net om iemand so ver te kry en aan te spoor om ‘die oes in te haal’. Ja, dit was (en is nog steeds) doodgewoon akkers - vruggies van die akkerbome wat op die dorp se sypaadjies groei. Die goedjies was meestal ’n lastigheid omdat hulle raas wanneer die wind waai; wanneer hulle los gekom en op ‘n huis se sinkdak geval het. Wanneer hulle dik gelê het op ’n sypaadjie was dit ongemaklik en gevaarlik om daaroor te loop omdat hulle onder jou voete wegrol. Eintlik was hulle nie juis nuttig nie, behalwe vir eekhorinkies wat daarvan gevreet het. En dan slagters kon hulle otjies daarmee vet maak. Kinders het gereken oom Niekie kon maklik praat, want so ’n knolletjie is klein, bitter klein. Maar hy was gewillig om vir jou te betáál om dit op te tel en vir hom tot by die slaghuis te bring. Ses sjielings en ’n ikspens vir ‘n streepsak kropgevat vol. Of een sjieling en ’n sikspens vir ’n paraffienblik vol. Ses blikke op ’n sak. (as ek reg onthou). Dit was goeie geld. die optel’, was dit ook nie rêrig ‘net vir die optel’ nie, want al dra die bome almal vruggies, was hulle nie almal eenders nie. En daar was ook ’n lekker een by Enslinstraat se hoek, maar toe hy begin vrot het, is hy afgesaag. Die groot ou boom op die hoek van Ceciliastraat met die Hoofstraat, dis nou waar die hokkie met die tiekiefoon gestaan het, daai boom se akkers het jou hande sommer gou-gou vol gemaak. By oom Niekie gelewer, was dit meer as net kitskos vir sy swyne. Vir later wou hy ook nog kos hê. Die oorskot is opgegaar en gedroog om as winterkos weer net oornag in water te laat week. Het ek ook verneem dat so ’n lading kan gis ook nè! Maak dit toe met ’n streepsak en laat ’n paar dae lê. Die bron en gebruik van hierdie eikevruggies sou aktiviste by die onlangse beraad van COP 17 groen gemaak het van pure jaloers. Dis ’n plaaslike produk, dit het ’n werk geskep, dis volhoubaar omdat dit volgende seisoen weer gebeur. En dit alles sonder ’n sweempie van ’n koolstofvoetspoor. Wys jou net. Eureka! Dit laat ’n mens wonder waar om varke te kry wat nog ’n aptyt vir akkers het.

AS a new resident of Paarl, I feel really disillusioned. I approached the Paarl firm M&R Mechanical Services to fix my car’s overheating problem and they (Maurice and Riaan) quoted me R2300 for the job. This included a service and a tuPosbus | PO Box 409 ne-up. Paarl 7620 Within one km after collecting edit@paarlpost.co.za my car it overheated. Two days later they delivered my car as fixed. I drove 3 km and yes, it overheated again. I phoned them and they assured me that they would follow up and fix it. That was the Friday and I told them that on the next Wednesday I had to take my wife to hospital in my previous hometown of Atlantis. They did not appear and I took my wife to hospital on the Wednesday. My car subsequently overheated and it blew a top gasket with related top damage. I was stuck at 04:30 in the morning in rainy weather in the Klipheuwel area. I had the car towed to Atlantis and got another mechanic to fix my car. R3000 later my car was fixed.

Maurice Theys, account holder of the firm, promised to make amends, but up to date has made no move to contact me, making me the loser of R2300. This one incident has demeaned Paarl in my eyes. Elvis Miller Maurice Theys responds: Mr Muller approached me to service and replace the waterpump on his 1986 BMW 320i. When we started to replace the parts, we saw that the waterhousing was also broken. We repaired it at no cost, and serviced the car and fitted a new waterpump. When the client collected his car the

first time, and it broke, we collected the car at the roadside. We saw that one of the existing pipes that connects at the intake had burst, and although we didn’t work on that pipe, and were not instructed to replace it, we repaired it at no cost. We took the car back to the client’s house and there was no mechanical fault on the car. The next day he contacted me around 07:00 to say the car had broken down on the way to Atlantis. He asked if I was prepared to repair the car and I agreed that I would, if I was at fault. However two days later he told me that a mechanic in Atlantis had repaired it. I asked him to provide the report from the mechanic, but to date I have not received anything. The reason the new waterpump cracked is that the car’s clutch fan was permanently locked by the owner or his predecessor, therefore the claim on the waterpump could not be honoured.

Recruitment scam THE Department of Defence has warned the public about a scam that has surfaced in the Western Cape whereby members of the public are promised hoax employment in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). The perpetrators of the scam invite the public to pay money with the promise of getting employment in the SANDF through its Military Skills Development System (MSDS). The Department is aware of such a scam and is urging the public not to fall prey to such

misinformation. Currently the alleged suspects are operating around the Western Cape. The Department would like to inform the public that it does not cost money to join the SANDF. Suspects arrested for Simondium thefts MEMBERS of the police in Groot Drakenstein and Klapmuts have arrested three suspects that were allegedly responsible for various burglaries in the Simondium area last year. This came after an attempt to break into a house on Southern Cross farm in Simondium. The owner of the house was awoken when an unknown person tampered with the burglar bars. She activated the alarm and ADT contacted the police station. The area was searched and ADT security came across a suspicious red Toyota Corrolla. The three male occupants of the vehicle tried to escape, but were caught by ADT members. They were arrested when burglary implements were found in the vehicle. The three suspects aged between 30 and 39 appeared at Paarl Magistrate’s Court on a charge of attempted housebreaking.

Good investigation by Detective Constable Haydn Maart, led the police to the residence of the three suspects in Wesbank, Malmesbury, where a large amount of suspected stolen goods were found and seized. These goods then linked the suspects with other burglaries that have taken place in Simondium since October. Items such as flat screen televisions, cellphones, computer equipment and other electronic devices were stolen. The items that were seized may be some of the goods that were stolen during these or other burglaries. The police are in the process of determining ownership of the property and the public can assist them in their investigation by coming forward to identify their stolen possesions. Anybody who can assist is requested to pay a visit to Groot Drakenstein police station or call 021 874 8000.

ALL systems are in place for speedy construction at the Drommedaris Housing Project near Mbekweni, after the annual builders’ holiday. New Africa Construction, the contractors, and CSM Consulting Services, the implementing agents, have been managing and co-ordinating all activities on the construction site between the Provincial and Local Government. Since construction commenced in December, workshop sessions have been held with the Drakenstein municipal officials for housingandbuildingcontrol,worksinspectors and officials from the PHP section of the Provincial Government Department of Human Settlements, the community committee and the community liaison officers. At these workshops CSM shared relevant information concerning the different hou-

ses, building specifications, construction phases, methods of progress control, testing, snagging and final handover procedures. The construction progress is ahead of the programme to date with the excavations for the foundation of the first 304 houses. Each construction phase consists of 76 houses. The first 120 strip footing foundations have been poured with concrete and approximately 100 foundation plinth walls have been completed. Construction of superstructures will commence on 27 January. Drakenstein Municipality’s Electrical Department will provide electricity to the houses at the end of February, after which the completed houses can be signed off and the first 76 handovers should commence shortly thereafter in March.

Herwinning brei nou uit na Noorder-Paarl Frans le Roux DIE herwinning van afval op Wellington en Suider-Paarl is so suksesvol, dat dieselfde deur-tot-deur-stelsel nou in Noorder-Paarl gaan afskop tussen Optenhorst- tot Retiefstraat vanaf 8 Februarie. Herwinbare materiaal sal weekliks reg voor elke inwoner se deur opgelaai word deur ’n kontrakteur. Om deel te word van die Besin-en-Herwin-roetine hoef inwoners slegs hulle herwinbare materiaal gedurende die week in ’n aparte deursigtige sak te plaas wat gratis deur die Munisipaliteit verskaf sal word. Wanneer hulle dan hulle roldromme met die gewone vullis uitsit, plaas hulle eenvoudig die sak bo-op of langs die drom. Wanneer die rommel verwyder word deur die herwinningsvragmotor, word ’n nuwe plastieksak agtergelaat vir die volgende week se afval. Herwinbare goedere sluit in plastiekhouers, skuimplastiek, blikke (uitgespoel) en

bottels (uitgespoel en sonder deksels of proppe) asook kartondose (wat platgedruk moet word). Die doel is om die hoeveelheid afval (sowat 300 ton per dag) wat vir storting genereer word in Drakenstein,teverminder. Boonop skep dit werksgeleenthede by die terreine waar herwinbare materiaal gesorteer word. Om dit vir inwoners maklik te maak om te herwin, het die Munisipaliteit ’n kitsgidspamflet saamgestel wat duidelik uiteensit wat herwin kan word en wat nie, asook ’n vinnige verwysing as yskasmagneet. Ander vullis kan steeds afgelaai word by die oorlaaistasie in Distillerystraat (Paarl) en die vullisterrein op Wellington. Witboois hou Nama-herenigingsaamtrek DIE Suid-Afrikaanse en Nama-vertakkings van die Witbooi-familie het onlangs van ver opgetrek om ’n herenigingsaamtrek te hou by Bergkroon op Wellington, nadat hulle vir 158 jaar uiteen was.

SEREMONIE. Bewoë lede van die Witbooi-Namafamilie steek kerse aan tydens die herenigingseremonie.

STAP. Die Namastap word gedemonstreer tydens die Witbooi-reünie op Wellington.

Gedurende 1853 het kaptein Cupido Witbooi, op daardie stadium leier van die Witbooi-Namastam, besluit om met van sy stamlede vanaf Pella, in die Noord-Kaap, na Namibië te trek. Ná die dood van Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi op 28 Oktober 1905 en weens die massamoorde op die Namas deur die Duitsers, het van die Namastamlede na Suid-Afrika teruggevlug. DieWitbooi-Namastamledehethullehoofsaaklik gevestig in die Noord- en Wes-Kaap, maar later ook oor die hele Suid-Afrika. Die reünie in Desember is gereël deur John Cornelius Witbooi van Wellington en kaptein Christiaan Rooi van Namibië om die hereniging na 158 jaar van skeiding te verseker. Die herenigingsgeleentheid oor die langnaweek van 16 Desember was hoofsaaklik gewy aan die Namataal, -kultuur en -kultuurerfenis. Kaptein Christiaan Rooi het ’n treffende boodskap gelewer en het belowe dat die stamlede in Namibië sal help met aanleer van die Namataal, bevordering van die kultuur en kultuurerfenis. In die proses sal hulle die Suid-Afrikaanse stamlede help om hul menswaardigheid terug te kry. Die Namastap is gedemonstreer deur Namastapdansers van Pella (Noord-Kaap) en uit Gibeon (Namibië). Die Namamusiek is verskaf deur Zak Dirkse van Namibië. Witzenberg se rieldansers, die nasionale rieldanskampioene van die afgelope drie jaar, het ook die riel gedemonstreer. Die herenigingsdiens die Sondag is gelei deur dr Allan Boesak. Marlene le Roux van Kunste Kaap was die genooide spreker. NUWE SKOOLHOOF. Mogammat Fadiel Nackerdien (agter heelregs) is die nuwe skoolhoof van Al-Azhar Instituut in die Paarl. Hy was voorheen 27 jaar ’n onderwyser aan Paulus Joubert Sekondêr en departementshoof vir Engels. Saam met hom pronk die tweede groep matrieks van die skool. Agter (van links) is Sakeena Potgieter, Raneem Khan, Virgil Hendricks, Muhammad Esa Jeppie en Mogammad Ghamza Moffat. Voor sit Aqeelah Martin (hoofmeisie), Farzaana Crook (onderhoofmeisie), Mogammad Eesa Moffat (onderhoofseun) en Zieyaad Fredericks (hoofseun). During the December holidays, Nina Hess of La Rochelle Girls’ High represented South Africa at the 9th African Junior Swimming Championships in Nigeria, where she obtained silver medals in the 50 m, 100 m and 200 m breaststroke and a fourth place in the 50 m butterfly. At the Western Province Championships she achieved four golds, one silver and three bronze medals, as well as three national youth qualifying times.

DEBATING. A leg of the World Debating Championships being held in Cape Town was held at Bridge House this past week. Participants for the championship must be aged 14-18 and have debating experience. Four international teams from Hong Kong, Singapore, Bermuda and Zimbabwe competed, with a team from Bridge House also taking part. Above are members of the teams from Bermuda and Hong Kong. The theme debated was “developing nations should place limits on internal rural-urban migration”.

DEBATING. La Rochelle Girls’ High School hosted the teams of China, Lithuania, Estonia and Ireland, who competed against each other in the World Schools’ Debating Competition held in Cape Town recently.

Groot stortingsterrein beplan Johan Nel TYDENS ’n inligtingsvergadering verlede week is ernstige besware deur plaaslike inwoners geopper teen die groot nuwe stortingsterrein wat die Wynland- distriksmunisipaliteit beoog om buite Wellington aan te lê. Op ’n vergadering op Wellington het die konsultante van die distriksmunisipaliteit aan belangstellendes gesê dat aansoeke tans voorberei word om toestemming te verkry om ’n tamaai stortingsterrein langs Wellington se bestaande stortingsterrein op die wal van die Bergrivier te bou. Die nuwe stortingsterrein sal aanvanklik hoofsaaklik as stortingsterrein vir Stellenbosch se munisipale gebied gebruik word aangesien die stortingsterrein by Stellenbosch vol is en daar geen uitbreidingsmoontlikhede is nie. Op ’n vraag waarom daar juis op hierdie terrein besluit is en nie op plek-

ke soos Gouda of Klapmuts nie, het Jan Palm, een van die konsultant-ingenieurs, gesê dat verskeie terreine ondersoek is. Na deeglike oorweging is daar besluit dat die terrein by Wellington die enigste terrein is wat aan al die vereistes vir grootskaalse storting oor ’n lang termyn voldoen. Volgens Palm sal die nuwe terrein so ontwerp word dat dit met die bestaande tegnologie om afval te herwin, minstens vir die volgende vyftig jaar gebruik sal kan word. Boere het hul kommer uitgespreek oor besoedeling van die Bergrivier weens syferwater uit die vullisterrein. Palm het gesê dat die metodes wat gebruik gaan word om syferwater te keer, die gevaar van storting in die Bergrivier of van besoedeling van grondwater heeltemal sal uitskakel. Die vloer van die terrein word baie deeglik afgeseël en die fondamente van die walle om die stortingsterrein sal 18 meter breed wees. Die walle sal ook

Wellington se watertoevoer lol oor die feestyd EEN van die twee hooftoevoerpype wat water aan Wellington voorsien, het aan die einde van Desember begin lek. Dit het veroorsaak dat die toevoer in die pyp afgesluit moes word. Die pyp is ’n 375 mm pyp wat ’n gemiddeld van 100 liter per sekond lewer. Die paar warm dae wat tydens die vakansietyd ondervind was, het veroorsaak dat die oorblywende waterpyp nie ’n voldoende hoeveelheid water kon lewer nie. Daar was dus sommige strate wat in die dag sonder water was. Water van ander sones is na die probleemareas gekanaliseer, maar dit het nie die probleem in geheel aangespreek nie. Pogings om die pyp onmiddellik te herstel was onsuksesvol aangesien die breuk onder die N1 brug oor die Bergrivier was. Gespesialiseerde toerusting tydens die vakansietyd was nie beskikbaar om veilige toegang tot die probleemarea onder die brug en bo die rivier te verkry nie. Met die einde van die vakansie is toerusting uit Kaapstad verkry wat die swaar pyp en ook die personeel veilig tot by die probleem kon bring, sodat die pyp herstel kon word en die watertoevoer weer aangeskakel kon word. Drakenstein Munisipaliteit het die inwoners van Wellington wat deur die wateronderbrekings beïnvloed was, bedank vir hulle geduld en vriendelike houding teenoor die personeel wat alles in hulle vermoë gedoen het om die situasie te verbeter en die probleem op te los.

WATERTEKORT. Spesiale toerusting moes gehuur word om die gebreekte waterpyp wat water aan Wellington verskaf, onder die N1 te vervang.

Big plans for Klapmuts RAPID expansion of Klapmuts is on the cards, with the provincial approval of an application for rezoning and subdivision by developer Francois Klomp. The Stellengate development of 38 hectares will be located directly south of Merchant Street, next to the Stellenbosch road (R44). The property is to be subdivided into about 1000 erven, with a number of business erven along the R44 between Merchant Street and the Potbelly Pantry. The street front is being designed by well-known architect Hannes Meiring. There will be a business park and a number of office blocks, as well as single residential erven, group housing and blocks of flats.

The development will include 260 smaller erven with low cost housing intended for farm workers from farms in the area. Other investors in this section include farmers of the Simonsberg area who wish to grant their workers property rights. Further south will be an extended private development including group housing and a retirement village. Provision will also be made for a high school and a service station. The development will also entail the development of a new roundabout at the intersection of the Stellenbosch road and the Simondium/Franschhoek road, opposite the access to the new Stellengate area. THE European markets have matured and their economies will not recover within the next decade; however the USA and Asia hold promise for the SA wine industry, which is facing its toughest time yet. Africa also has potential for growth. This was the message from various presenters at the seventh Nedbank VinPro Information Day in Somerset West, where 530 delegates from the wine industry value-chain were clearly looking for answers. The wine industry is plagued by low profit margins, decreasing sales and a shrinking area under vines. “We should consistently make good wines and market ourselves with a simple, sincere and repetitive message,” said guest speaker Johann Rupert, prominent businessman and owner of L’Ormarins Estate. He expressed concern about the dumping of cheap wines from overseas into the domestic market, but warned against uncertified bulk wine exports to Europe. “The day that Europe suspects us of dumping, we can forget about exporting any more wine to them.” Marian Kopp, managing director of Niederkirchener Weinmacher eG in Germany, predicted that the USA and Asia will drive a 6% growth in global wine consumption

over the next four years. In the meantime, South Africa’s domestic wine market is stagnant and wine producers’ profitability is the lowest in eight years. “Of a bottle of wine sold at R70 in a restaurant, the waiter receives a R7 tip, whereas the producer only receives R3. Producers’ income did not keep up with soaring production costs,” said Phillip Retief, head of Van Loveren Vineyards. The new generation wine drinker likes consumer-driven wine styles, Chenin Blanc, sweet reds and MCC and sparkling wines. Wine consumers also avidly seek wine information online. Kopp and Dave Duarte of the Ogilvy Digital Marketing Academy both emphasised the potential of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus. Rupert announced the launch of an Institute for Viticulture and Oenology in Stellenbosch later this year to bridge a gap between the practical and academic sides of the wine industry – “a world-class institution for knowledge transfer where the correct information will be made available to the industry online”. Wesgro launches web portal for business THE Western Cape Investment and Trade Promotion Agency (Wesgro) has launched its new web-based trade portal which allows Western Cape businesses to register their corporate details, at no cost, and post trade leads. The portal has two specific functionalities which allow businesses to post buying and selling trade leads. The Wesgro trade portal also includes research and intelligence which the Agency has conducted on international market access. Users can access a wide range of regional and country briefs, as well as sector research. The trade portal provides information for international and domestic investors on accessing finance, immigration, national government incentives, location benchmarking and business retention and expansion services Wesgro CEO Nils Flaatten says, “We worked hard to ensure that our site is business driven. Its objective is to increase investment, increase exports and market the Province as a business destination. “And its only requirement is that busi-

ness needs to first register in order to access the trade portal. “We tested the market with a soft launch and in three days we had 147 exporters, 8 buyers, 6 investors, 92 service providers and 24 special interest companies register on the trade portal. Venter crosses the line first Doolhof wen THE u.16 Yorkshire Academy riders had an early wake-up to participate in the 30 km Cape Cobra League race in Cape Town on Saturday with Ivan Venter crossing the line first. It was a short race, but the hills definitely tested the youngsters, finishing on the 4 km uphill of Ou Kaapse Weg. The Academy was represented by Graeme Ockhuis, Ivan Venter, Lee Arthur Green, Nicol Carstens and Damian Davids. A threat for the riders would be Stefan de Bod (Aca Joe) who was in 2nd overall position after the first league last week. The Academy youngsters

went into the race with a plan and first it was Damian Vaughan of the Academy that attacked after about 4 km into the race. Lee Arthur Green of the Academy is also emerging as a great team player and he also launched an attack. Eventually it was Ivan Venter who attacked on Black Hill. He got away, got caught, but attacked hard again and finally built a comfortable lead. On the last 4 km climb, Ou Kaapse Weg, Venter had a good lead. De Bod started to chase, but had Nicol Carstens and Graeme Ockhuis on his wheel. Venter crossed the finish line with a comfortable lead. The riders will be preparing themselves for the 3rd League Race this coming Sunday, the Bouckaert-Soenen 72 km race, that starts and finishes in Paarl.

DIE eerste sokkerspan van Doolhof Warriors United het onlangs met Landou (3-1) en Mountain Green (2-1) afgereken. In die Landou-wedstryd het Fanta een doel en Norman twee doele aangeteken terwyl Norman en Trevor in die Mountain Green-wedstryd elk een doel aangeteken het. Nuwe stoeiklub open sy deure DIE Solid Rock-stoeiklub, wat volgende week sy deure in die Paarl open, het sy naam geleen by die Paarlse granietrots, ’n wêreldbekende baken. Die doel van dié klub is om leerders van die breë gemeenskap van Drakenstein te bereik en potensiële stoeiers so gou as moontlik op die Suid-Afrikaanse stoeimatte te kry. Dié klub gaan hulle stoeiers onderrig in vry- sowel as Grieks-Romeinse styl. Dié klub werk ook nou saam met WP Rugby se Kidz-program om laerskoolkinders die geleentheid te gee om sterker bolywe te ontwikkel om sodoende die stampe en stote van rugbyspeel beter te kan hanteer. Daarom dat die organiseerders, Raynardt Botha en Louis Koen (albei verbonde aan Hoërskool Gimnasium se sportkantoor), volgende week by die Paarl Polisiekollege se gimnasium die bal aan die rol wil sit met openingsaande waar leerders hulle potensiaal kan kom uit-

stal. Alle leerders van die Paarl en Wellington word uitgenooi om die openingsaande by te woon. Selfs leerders wat nie die klubgelde kan bekostig nie, word aangemoedig om die openingsaande by te woon. Indien hulle potensiaal toon, het die Polisiekollege onderneem om hulle klubgelde te betaal, vertel die organiseerders. Laerskool-leerders wat deel is van WP Rugby Kidz en by die Solid Rock-stoeiklub aansluit, en andersom, gaan ook kwalifiseer vir spesiale tariewe. “Daarom moet almal wat belang stel by die openingsaande wees,” vertel Botha, ’n Suid-Afrikaanse stoeikampioen en tans die sportwetenskaplike by Paarl Gimnasium. Hy gaan ook die hoofafrigter wees. Hy gaan bygestaan word deur Kurt Hetzog, ook ’n SA stoeier van die Worcester-stoeiklub. Botha het op sesjarige ouderdom begin stoei en het al twaalf jaar ondervinding met verskeie Suid-Afrikaanse streektitels agter sy naam

asook ’n Suid-Afrikaanse titel. Hy was nog onlangs die stoei-afrigter van die Maties-rugbyklub se rugbyspelers. “Daar is reeds baie belangstelling en ons kyk daarna om 100 stoeiers af te rig,” sê hy. “Stoei gee nie net fisiese krag nie, maar dit maak kinders ook geestelik sterker. Kinders leer met stoei om verloor te hanteer. Baie outjies kan nie teleurstellings hanteer nie en met stoei leer die outjies dit van kleins af,” sê hy. Die openingsaande is Maandag (30 Januarie) en Woensdag (1 Februarie) tussen 17:30 en 19:30 by die Polisiekollege in Hoofstraat. Laerskool-leerders kry van 17:30 tot 18:30 kans en die hoërskoolleerders van 18:30 tot 19:30. Belangstellendes word versoek om met ’n kortbroek, T-hemp, tekkies en ’n handdoek op te daag. READY FOR SUNDAY. Paarl Rotarian Luc Bouckaert (main sponsor of the Bouckaert-Soenen Paarl Rotary cycle races) is preparing for this Sunday’s challenging mountain-bike race in Paarl. Organisers expect more than 2000 cyclists to enter in the MTB and road races. Those still wanting to participate can visit the website www.paarlrotary.co.za for an online entry. Sunday’s races start at 06:30 at the Boys’ High sports grounds and end at 12:30. A new feature of this year’s event is the 19 km untimed MTB race on Jan Phillips Drive along the lower parts of Paarl Mountain, which is geared towards development and fun for the whole family.
