) After law-enforcement officers cleaned up the vagrants which have been defacing the banks of the Berg River at the Market Street bridge in Paarl in the run-up to the recent canoe marathon, the vagrants were back again before the last canoe left. And this week, with the kick-off of the annual charity power-boat race, spectators had full view of one of these vagrants bathing naked in the river. Could this possibly be the start of the Paarl nudist waterfront development?

Sunny, but cold AT last we can look forward to a sunny weekend, although still pretty chilly. Today will be partly cloudy with a high of only 14°C. Tomorrow is sunny, but keep those winter woolies on, because during the entire weekend, althought bright, the mercury is not expected to rise higher than 16°C. The weather however is expected to warm up on Monday and Tuesday and the next rain can only be expected next Thursday and Friday.

Koopkragtariewe word weer bekyk DIE Drakenstein Munisipaliteit is tans besig om die koopkragbetalingstelsel te heroorweeg nadat die burgemeester kennis geneem het van die groot ongelukkigheid wat heers oor die kragtariewe wat so pas in werking getree het. “Ons besef dat die huidige ekonomiese situasie dit moeilik maak vir die mense om kop bo water te hou. Ons moet ook aanvaar dat Eskom jaarliks kragverhogings gaan instel, soos wat gebeur het op 1 Julie,” het Van Deventer Dinsdag gesê. “Die nasionale beleid van die Nasionale Elektrisiteitsreguleerder (NERSA) verplig die munisipaliteit om tariewe so te hef dat alle vasteen kapasiteitskoste verhaal word. “Dit sluit in die instandhouding van die koopkragkaartjiestelsel, wat die munisipaliteit minstens R1 miljoen per maand kos. Daarby betaal ons ook verder vir die onderhoud van die totale plaaslike verspreidingsnetwerk. “Nasionale beleid skryf ten minste 6% van die totale kragverkope aangewend word vir onderhoud, wat jaarliks meer as R37,5 miljoen beloop. “Ons nuwe tariewe wat deur NERSA goedgekeur is en waarvolgens vasteen

kapasiteitskoste gehef word, is voordelig vir die 20 Ampere gebruiker omdat geen vasteen kapasiteitskoste op 20 ampere gehef word nie “Dit blyk egter dat die gemeenskap verkies dat die vastekoste eerder by die tariewe ingesluit word. Dit is die stelsel wat tans in Stellenbosch gebruik word, waar vastekoste en kapasiteitskoste ingesluit is in die koste van ’n eenheid krag. “’n Eenheid gaan dus meer kos as die huidige tarief, maar vastekoste sal nie apart betaal nie. So sal ’n koper altyd presies weet hoeveel eenhede ontvang sal word. “Daar word nou dringend gekyk of NERSA Drakenstein sal toelaat om hierdie aanpassing te kan maak. “Ons sal die publiek in kennis stel sodra ons van NERSA goedkeuring ontvang het.” Intussen kan verbruikers hul uitgawes verlaag deur die stroombreker kosteloos af te gradeer na ’n kleiner een indien hulle klein kraggebruikers is (doen aansoek by die munisipale kassiere of wyksraadslid). “Help ons ook om die mense wat onwettig krag gebruik aan te spreek, sodat die hele gemeenskap kan help betaal,” het Van Deventer bygevoeg.

Squatters evicted by fire Lise Beyers ONE of central Paarl’s problem buildings was almost razed to the ground last week, when a fire started in a room on the first floor. The old building on the corner of Lady Grey Street and the Berg River Boulevard, which previously housed Lady Grey Paint and Hardware, caught alight at 13:00 on Friday afternoon. The building’s electricity had the previous day been disconnected by the Drakenstein Municipality and residents were thus relying on candles and gas for light and heat. It is unsure how the fire started, but it quickly swept through the nine rooms on the second storey of the building. Residents were forced to leave all their belongings and flee. The northbound carriageway of the Berg River Boulevard and the westbound lane of Lady Grey Street were hereafter closed, in fear that the delicate walls of the building could collapse. Questions are now being asked about what led to at least 30 people occupying this building. The owners of the building, Connie and Louis Rodrigues of Lady Grey Paint and Hardware, had let the second storey to one individual. But of late it has become what can be described as a squatter camp. The Rodrigues family were not prepared to comment on the matter, but word has

it that a tenant had sub-let beds, especially to foreigners, and that the owners were in the process of having these residents evicted. The building was earmarked for a lavish restoration project. The municipality also disconnected the electricity to the building because of illegal and dangerous connections which had been made, allegedly by these residents. The residents were up in arms on Monday morning when they were denied access to the building, to salvage what was left of their belongings. They also wanted to know why they could not move into ground floor rooms of the building. The operational chief of the Drakenstein fire department, Derek Peceur, said that no access could be allowed due to safety considerations. “The floor on the second story has collapsed, making the building very unstable. “Engineers are currently compiling a report on the damage, as well as means of stabilising the building. “The roads have been closed because of fears that the walls can collapse. It is at this stage unsure when they will be reopened.” In the mean time, residents have been offered accommodation at the Paarl Nightshelter, but most of them have chosen to find alternative accommodation, while many of them have been squatting under the verandah of an adjacent building. It is currently unsure what their future is.

Hy het R50 by hom gehad, maar hy is meegedeel dat dit nie eens genoeg was om sy agterstallige dienstegeld te betaal nie. Hy moes dringend ‘n werkstuk voorberei maar kon nie sy rekenaar aanskakel nie. ’n Ander briefskrywer sê: “Ek het vir die DA gestem omdat ek glo dis primitief om, as jy iets onder die stadsraad se aandag wil bring, jy in die strate bande moet brand en toi-toi. Jy stel hierdie dinge by die stembus reg. “Ek kan nie glo dat dit nodig is om ’n DAstadsraad aan so ’n basiese beginsel te herinner nie!”

Skrootdiewe vas, danksy handelaar Lise Beyers VERMEENDE skrootdiewe is verlede week vasgetrek met ’n half ton koper. Die storie het ontvou toe ’n man by die bekende Wellingtonse skroothandelaar Mr Metal aangeklop het. Hiér het die eienaar, Christo Saayman, dadelik onraad vermoed toe hulle met hul rooi sedan by die perseel ingery het. “Die agterkant van die motor het so laag gehang dat ek gedink het dat die motor nie skokbrekers gehad het nie. “Hulle het die kattebak oopgemaak en daar was ’n geweldige hoeveelheid koper daarin - van plate tot soliede silinders.” Toe Saayman die mans vra waar hulle die koper kry, het hulle gesê dat hulle dit vanuit Johannesburg kry. Hieroor was Saayman verder agterdogtig. “Hulle het probeer verduidelik dat hulle die koper vanaf Johannesburg per vragmotor vervoer en wat oor bly, mag hulle hou. Een van my werknemers het vir my kom sê dat hy weet by watter vervoermaatskappy een van hulle werk. “Ek het die maatskappy gebel en die situasie verduidelik. Die eienaar het gesê dat hul storie nie waar is nie en dat ek hulle nie moet betaal vir die koper nie. Ek het toe ook die polisie geskakel.” By nadere ondersoek het dit aan die lig gekomdatdiewerknemervandieplaaslikevervoermaatskappy onderweg was met ’n vrag koper vanaf Johannesburg na Kaapstad. Hy het glo in Worcester gestop waar sy makker op hom gewag het met die rooi motor. Van die koper is toe in dié motor oorgelaai. Die verdagtes is in hegtenis geneem in ver-

band met die voorval en het in die Worcester Landroshof verskyn op aanklag van diefstal. Saayman het gesê dat dit sy plig is om die polisie te verwittig indien hy enige onraad vermoed. “By Mr Metal werk ons nouliks saam met die Wellington polisie. Ons skakel hulle gereeld as ons vermoed dat gesteelde goedere op ons perseel beland.” Saayman het bygevoeg dat skroothandelaars nou volgens wet verplig is om kopieë van ID te hou van diegene met wie hulle handel dryf. “Ek het ten duurste ’n nuwe stelsel hiervoor geïmplementeer. Ons het ook sekuriteitskameras geinstalleer wat die perseel 24-uur van die dag monitor. “Dit is vir my baie belangrik om ’n skoon besigheid te bedryf. Ongelukkig is daar diegene in die bedryf wat ons almal se naam swart smeer. Dit is veral agterplaashandelaars wat die bedryf ’n slegte naam gee.” Volgens Saayman koop hierdie handelaars onverpoos enige metaal. Hy het gesê dat hy reeds onderneem het dat hy geen gebrande draad sal aankoop nie, tensy hy gewaarborg is van die bron. “As ek enige twyfel het, dan moet die persoon ’n verklaring by die polisie gaan aflê oor die afkoms van die skroot. Ek neem ook geen voertuie in nie, indien die persoon wat die motor wil verkoop nie in besit is van die wettige registrasiedokumente van die motor nie.” Saayman het bygevoeg dat talle mense afhanklik is van skroothandelaars om hul families gevoed te hou. “Hulle maak ook die dorp skoon van blikkies en allerlei gemors en verruil dit vir geld.”

Father and son go for icy swim Lise Beyers A FATHER and son had a narrow escape on Friday, when the bakkie they were driving in plunged into a farm dam. The incident took place at the Waterzicht farm of André Livingston-Louw in Klapmuts. Wayne Coetzee from Tableview and his seven-year-old son, Ross, were on a fishing excursion when near tragedy struck. “We often fish here as it is very good fishing grounds for carp. “Because there is no place to turn at our fishing spot on the dam wall, we reverse in. Last week, due to the wet weather conditions, the road was extremely muddy and wet. And to make things worse, cattle that graze here also trample the ground into an absolute mess.” Just before Wayne, who is an experienced 4x4 enthusiast, reached the fishing spot, his 4x4 Colt bakkie started sliding.

“My vehicle was already set in maximum traction, but it just kept sliding and then started to roll down the dam wall into the water. “It was a terrifying experience. Fortunately Ross’s window was open and as we plummeted into the dam I told him to swim out to safety. I followed suit.” “Ross is a good swimmer and reached the bank quickly. He was just a bit shocked and freezing cold.” The following day Wayne returned to Waterzicht and with the help of a wetsuit, tried to gain access to his vehicle and retrieve fishing equipment to the value of thousands of rands. The bakkie was now submerged three metres under the water and due to safety constraints, he was unable to reach it. And only on Tuesday, after much deliberation as to how the vehicle would be salvaged, was it eventually pulled out of the dam. But it is beyond repair.

Spyker in doodskis? DIE brand wat verlede week in ’n ou gebou op die hoek van Hoof- en Lady Greystraat ontstaan het, het weer eens die verval van hierdie deel van die Paarl beklemtoon. Hier het skynbaar ten minste 30 mense in ’n klein woonstelgebou ingetrek, sonder naastenby voldoende geriewe vir soveel mense. Die woonstel is na bewering aan een individu verhuur, wat toe onwettig sub-verhuur het, veral aan buitelanders. Volgens nooddienswerkers wat tydens die brand teenwoordig was, was toestande in hierdie gebou maar swak. Intussen het die eienaars van die gebou planne gehad om hierdie gebou, asook aangrensende eiendom, teen ‘n koste van miljoene rande te ontwikkel. ’n Argitek is reeds aangestel en onderhandelinge met die munisipaliteit en bewaringsowerhede was onderweg. Maar elke keer as die onwettige inwoners genader is om die perseel te ontruim, is vyandige reaksie ontvang. Nou is die skade gedoen en dit is twyfelagtig of hierdie historiese gebou gered sal kan word.

Waar daar ’n wil is.... EK het met ’n nuwe stokperdjie begin: Scrapbooking. Heel melodramaties het ek voorin geskryf: “Dis die jaar 2012 en noudat ek byna-byna 50 jaar oud word, doen ek uiteindelik wat ek jare t’rug al vir myself beloof het…” Dis nou op my “te doen voor ek doodgaan”-lysie. Op daai lysie is dinge soos hiking, bungee jumping, reis, perdry, ’n nuwe taal aanleer, my eie film maak ensomeer. In my scrapbook pryk nou foto’s van ons groep hikers wat die afgelope paar maande die een staproete na die ander aandurf. Dit was lankal my begeerte om staproetes aan te durf, maar daar was maar altyd ’n (goeie) rede of verskoning waarom ek nie kon begin nie. Eers was dit die regte stapskoene (wat onbekostigbaar was), rugsak, en die belangrikste: om fiks genoeg te wees! Kyk, as ek gewag het vir die regte skoene, rugsak en dat ek fiks genoeg moet wees, het ek wraggies nooit by die stap uitgekom nie. Laasjaar het ek toe vir die eerste keer ’n staproete aangedurf, met die uwe se óú paar staptekkies, sónder rugsak, en darem ’n paar kilometers per week se stap agter die rug. Kom ek vertel vir jou, as daai gogga jou eers byt, laat los hy jou nie weer nie! Ons is nou ’n groep van 18 persone wat gereeld saamstap en probeer om een keer per maand ’n ander staproete aan te durf. Dis nou jonk en oud, fiks en onfiks. Sommige woon in en rondom Paarl, ander van oral in die Kaap, en ’n paar manne van Worcester. So word nuwe vriendskapsbande so tussen die stap deur gesmee, en elke keer is daar een of twee meer. Toe ek die eerste keer ’n staproete in die Dutoitskloofberge aangepak het, was ek kompleet uitgeboul deur die skoonheid, grootsheid en rustigheid van die natuur. Ek kon eenvoudig net nie die gevoel beskryf nie. Om eers tussen die wingerde deur te loop, en sodoende meer te leer van die verskillende druiwe en wyne, het dit boonop ’n opvoedkundige uitstappie gemaak. Om bo-op die berg te staan, en

bo-oor die Vallei uit te kyk. Aag man, dis prysloos! Ek en ’n vriend het dit eers alleen gedoen, en ek’t by tye as hy nie naby is nie, vinnig ’n traan weggepik. Dis prentjie-mooi tonele wat jou elke keer na jou kamera laat gryp, want jy wil so graag elke oomblik verewig vaslê. In die natuur besef jy veral weer die alomteenwoordigheid van ’n Opperwese, en hoe klein, nietig en weerloos jy in werklikheid is. Behalwe dat jy jou verkyk aan die natuurskoon is dit ook terapeuties, en dien hierdie manier van stap ook as ontvlugting as jy bietjie terneergedruk is, of as jy sommer net wil wegkom van alles. Jy bly boonop gesond, want wat is beter as stap? Ek besef telkemale as ek stap of ’n dorpie besoek hoe ’n mooi land ons het, met sy mense inkluis. Dit herinner my gedurigdeur aan die woorde van ons gewese president, Thabo Mbeki wat lui: “I owe my being to the hills and the valleys, the mountains and the glades, the rivers, the deserts, the trees, the flowers, the seas and the ever-changing seasons that define the face of our native land. “So by exploring our country, the valleys, the mountains, the small little towns, other cultures, I know that none dare challenge me when I say - I am an African!” Nou ja, as ek deesdae gaan stap is dit met my stapstewels, rugsak en ek doen steeds nie die nodige gereelde oefening soos wat dit moet nie. Maar ten minste is ek al aan die stap. ’n Mens is nooit te oud om dit te doen wat jy nog altyd, jaar na jaar vir jouself beloof om te doen, te doen nie. Feit is, dit hoef nie net leë beloftes te bly nie. En jy hoef dit boonop vir niemand anders te doen, as jouself nie. Net so hoef jy dus ook vir niemand anders iets te bewys nie. Of jy nou verder wil studeer, jou eie besigheid wil begin, ’n gesonde eetplan wil volg, ophou rook, wil spaar vir ’n oorsese reis, ag noem maar op - maak net ’n begin. Moenie verskonings of redes soek oor waarom jy nie aan die gang kan kom nie. Begin eenvoudig net.

Was heffing vooraf bekend gemaak aan publiek? EK sien in die Paarl Post van Donderdag 19 Julie dat daar baie ongelukkigheid is oor die diensgelde wat vanaf Julie op koopkrag gehef word. Dit was te wagte. Wat my verbaas, is dat die munisipaliteit so ’n belangrike aankondiging NET in die Paarl Post doen en dan net TWEE DAE voordat dit op 1 Julie in werking sou tree. Nie almal lees of kry die Paarl Post nie. Ek dink elke belastingbetaler is geregtig om ten minste EEN MAAND kennisgewing te verwag deur ’n duidelike uiteengesette inligtingstuk ter verduideliking wat by die munisipale rekening gevoeg is. Dit is nie ’n eenvoudige proses nie, aangesien die volle bedrag

vir dienste (R4,26 per dag R127,93 per maand) nie eenmalig afgetrek kan word nie. Volgende keer met aankope word daar weer ’n gedeelte of die res afgetrek en

dan kry jy ’n ander aantal eenhede vir jou R100. Dit skep ’n babelse verwarring. Drakenstein kon hulself baie moeite gespaar het, want ek weet van baie inwoners wat glad nie bewus was van die nuutste verwikkelinge nie en dan navraag by die munisipaliteit moes doen. Ek praat nie eens van die mense wat krag vooruit gekoop het nie (“stockpiling prepaid vouchers”) om te bespaar en dan hierdie diensgelde eenmalig (terugwerkend tot 1 Julie) sal moet betaal wanneer hulle weer krag koop nie. Wat moontlik mag gebeur is dat die getroue gedissiplineerde belastingbetaler sy steun by die stembus mag onttrek. Die DA munisipale raad sal werklik baie ernstig moet besin hoe hul die kiesers wat hul in mag geplaas het, behandel. Vier jaar is ’n baie kort periode en ondeurdagte besluite mag hul duur te staan kom. Ongelukkig manifesteer die getroue belastingbetaler van Drakenstein-area hul frustrasies op ’n baie beskaafde manier. Hy probeer eers R50 se krag koop, maar die dame agter die toonbank kan dit nie prosesseer nie, aangesien die totale bedrag vir heffings afgetrek sou word. Hy staan en dink ’n rukkie en koop toe R100 se krag, waarvan hy slegs 9 eenhede ontvang het. Slegs 9 eenhede – wat hom en sy gesin hoe lank gaan hou? Ek verstaan dat daar heffings moet wees op sekere dienste, maar het die munisipaliteit nie die nodige navorsing gedoen voordat sul-

Court soon to be repaired Lise Beyers ALTHOUGH the Paarl Regional Court building is still in a state of disintegration, it is due to receive a face-lift. Paarl Post last year revealed in what a shocking condition this historic building on the corner of Main and Market Streets is. The public and the employees contend daily with rat infestations, walls and pillars crumbling, wooden floors disintegrating due to damp rot, broken doors and windows

which cannot open. The toilets are reportedly inadequate for the number of people they serve and the cells are sometimes so dirty that some legal advisors refuse to enter them to consult with clients. And witnesses often have to sit for days in the unprotected courtyard, waiting their turn to appear in court. But, says areas court manager Cheryldene Martin, serious attention is being given to the situation. Already small changes have been made, such as the replacement of the ancient electrical wiring. “Plans are in the pipeline to have the entire building revamped. Unfortunately it is a lengthy process, as the building is a historical monument and whatever is done, has to be approved by the heritage association. “Various assessments and tenders also have to be processed. “Once all of this has been finalised, work will continue, such as paint and repair work and all faults will be repaired. REVAMP. The Paarl regional court is due to be revamped.

Hy is in 2000 verplaas na die Worcester Metrodienste waar hy ook hoof geword het. Hy word oorleef deur sy vrou, Cielie, ’n dogter Anjoleca Vorster (tans in Brittanje) en seun Heinrich. ‘n Roudiens is gister in die Maranathasentrum gehou deur die nooddienste. Facebook lei tot familie-reünie DIE Paarlse sanger Ameen Levy (Rappin Donkey) is al vir drie jaar Facebookvriende met Zubeida Levy Abrahams van Kaapstad, die hele tyd salig onbewus daarvan dat dit sy bloedniggie is. Hy is algemeen bekend in die Paarl as die eerste sanger wat in die tagtigerjare begin rap het. Hy het geleidelik die kloutjie by die oor begin bring toe Zubeida onlangs foto’s van haar pa op Facebook geplaas het met sy 90ste verjaarsdag. Ameen het kommentaar daarop gelewer om vir haar geluk te wens met haar pa se verjaarsdag en vertel toe dat hy ’n oom gehad het wat 94 jaar oud geword het. Zubeida het begin uitvra oor wie sy oom was. Levy het toe vir haar die verhaal vertel van hoe hy as driejarige moes verhuis van die plaas Dekkersvlei waar hy gebore is, na sy tante in Distrik Ses, omdat sy ma in die hospitaal beland het. Na vier jaar keer hy terug van Kaapstad na die Paarl om by sy ouma te woon. Dit is hier dat hy op agtjarige ouderdom leer kitaar speel het. Hy het nooit weer van die familie in Distrik Ses gehoor nie en het baie na hulle verlang. Zubeida het Ameen se facebook-foto aan

Sy oom, Chico Levy, was een van die persone agter die musieblyspel Distrik Ses. Dan is daar ’n kleinneef, ook met die naam Amin, wie se liedjie die Duitse trefferparade gehaal het. In September kom daar nog ’n groot dag vir Levy. Hy en sy vrou vlieg Durban toe vir ’n reünie met sy 81-jarige tannie, Gadija Jungle Barns, by wie hy destyds gebly het. Ameen het nou uitgevind dat hy altesame tien half-susters en -broers het. Hulle beplan ’n groot familie-reünie vir die Levy-familie later vanjaar en besoeke aan oorsese familielede in Australië en Engeland is nie uitgesluit nie. Daar word tans ’n boek oor Ameen Levy se lewensverhaal geskryf.

Shelter from the storm Lise Beyers WHILE many of us are able to stay warm in our homes during these icy winter months, many residents battle to survive the elements. But those who are left on the streets do manage to find a light at the end of the tunnel by seeking shelter at the Haven Night Shelter in Ambagsvallei Street, Huguenot. Under the watchful eye of manager Eugene Zwaan and his staff members, 170 people receive a comfortable bed to sleep in and three meals a day. “We provide accommodation for unemployed people, pensioners and working homeless,” said Zwaan. “Generally we are only able to accommodate 120 people in our dormitories, but during the icy winter months, we make space for more people.” At the night shelter, each person that enters its doors is first evaluated to access their immediate needs. Minister urges communities to speak out THE deputy minister in the Presidency responsible for Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation, Obed Bapela, has urged communities to speak out about the problems they experience so that government can effectively tackle them. However, he cautioned communities to raise their grievances at the appropriate levels of government. On Friday, Bapela led a delegation, which included human settlements deputy minister Zou KotaFredericks, sports and recreation deputy minister Gert Oosthuizen, government communication and information systems CEO Jimmy Manyi and local leaders, to Mbekweni, Paarl.

Friday’s visit came after minister in the presidency responsible for performance, monitoring and evaluation, Collins Chabane, visited Mbekweni earlier this year. Representatives from local, provincial and national government addressed issues like housing, unemployment, job creation, skills training, land claims and youth development. Earlier, the delegation visited the Drommedaris housing project in Mbekweni. “What we found is that the houses there are very attractive, very beautiful. I would also want to own a house there one day, but there were problems indicated by the residents,”

he said. “These problems related to the absence of overhanging roof sections and leakages.” It was agreed that provincial government and the municipality would follow up with the developer and fix the problem so that the roof was adjusted properly, he said. Bapela said the government was looking into the community’s request for an isiXhosa-speaking school closer to the communities and that this was under consideration. He added there were talks about developing a “liberation route” in the area. He urged the communities, who had participated in the struggle, to help map out that route.

Car thieves strike A TOTAL of three vehicles were stolen in Paarl last week, two of them on one day. One of the vehicles was stolen from the parking area of Paarl Mall on Friday morning at 10:00 near the Pick n Pay entrance to this shopping centre. A woman parked an older model Isuzu bakkie here and went into the mall for approximately 30 minutes. On her return the vehicle had vanished. She reportedly asked nearby car-guards whether they had noticed anything, but they did not reply to her question. The vehicle has still not been found. Also on Friday, a Nissan sedan was stolen in broad daylight in New Street in the CBD. And on Sunday, a VW sedan vanished from the parking area at Huguenot railway station. Paarl police are urging the public to take extra precautions when leaving their vehicles unattended.

Interskolereëlings VERKEERSPROBLEME by Hoër Meisieskool Paarl bereik gewoonlik ’n piek gedurende Interskole en paaie by die skool sal volgende Woensdag en Vrydag vir besoekers gesluit wees (Zeederberg-, Theron- en Hoogstraat). Die netbalprogram vir volgende Woensdag is: 17:00 o.16A (baan 2 HMS), 17:00 o.19B (baan 3), 17:40 voorstelling van spanne, 17:50 o.19A (baan 2 HMS) en 18:50 Old Girls (baan 2 HMS). Verkeersbeamptes sal aan diens wees aan die onderpunt van Zeederbergstraat, Theronstraat en aan beide kante van Hoogstraat asook waar Zionstraat aansluit by Hoofstraat. Slegs die inwoners van L’Ideal, personeel en eregaste sal kan gebruik maak van die gedeelte van Zeederbergstraat tussen Hoogstraat en die skool. Eenrigtingverkeer sal geld vir almal en voertuie moet dus in Hoogstraat regs draai. Parkering op die skoolterrein en in Hoogstraat is gereserveer vir voertuie met parkeerkaartjies. Ouers en besoekers word versoek om ander parkeerareas, soos dié van die Strooidakkerk, te gebruik en na die skoolterrein te stap. Parkeerplek in Hoogstraat is gereserveer vir die personeel van HMS. Geen motors mag aan die skool se kant parkeer nie. Verkeersbeamptes sal aan diens wees.

School competition receives great quality entries THE national EduPlant greening and food gardening programme competition has received 440 entries from schools across the country this year. According to EduPlant programme manager Joanne Carty, the quality and standard of the food gardening entries are higher than ever before. “The cluster workshops initiated last year have had a very positive impact on the schools that have upped their game. “This year’s entries come primarily from the schools who chose to participate in the cluster workshops over the past two years.” EduPlant teaches educators, learners and communities how to sustainably grow their own food naturally. FTFA initiated the programme in 2004 and co-ordinates it to encourage, recognise and reward schools that promote food security, improved nutrition and health at school and in their surrounding communities. Out of the 440 entries, 60 schools will be chosen to participate in the finals from 1 to 4 October. Almost 25% of the entries come from the Limpopo province, traditionally a strong region for this competition. “The Western Cape entries have increased threefold from a mere six entries in 2010 to eighteen in 2012. The EduPlant team of permaculture experts are now working through the entries to shortlist 200 of the 440 schools. The shortlisted schools will be visited by the team during July and August when schools will be assessed and the 60 finalists selected. The 60 finalists will be announced on 1 September. Each finalist school will receive R1 500 and will be invited to four days of workshops, seminars and entertainment culminating in the awards dinner on 4 October in Johannesburg, where the winners will be announced. There are 21 categories and cash prizes up for grabs ranging from R5 000 to R25 000, as well as educational and gardening resources for all the finalist schools and even for all entrants. Schools also stand a chance to win a two week permaculture design course for their project leaders. The EduPlant programme is jointly funded by Absa, Engen and Woolworths Trust as part of their corporate social investment programmes in an effort to address food insecurity within South Africa. Meulwater ready to produce crystal clear water Lise Beyers PAARL can now be proud to have one of the most sophisticated water treatment works in the country. The water treatment works at Meulwater on Paarl Mountain has just become operational, after construction was recently completed and it will be officially opened next week. This multi-million rand plant on Paarl Mountain will supply approximately 20% of the current municipal water demand to the area, benefiting more than 25 000 households. It will also reduce dependency on Wemmershoek Dam which is owned by the City of Cape Town and from whom Drakenstein has to purchase water. Paarl Mountain has been an important water source for the Drakenstein Municipality for a long time. The various streams around the mountain have been used by farmers and residents from the early settlement of the valley, as they provided a pristine source of water. However, as the water requirements of Paarl increased, more demand was placed on the mountain waters and as a result, Nantes and Bethel Dams were built in order to provide capacity to store mountain water throughout the year.At certain times of the year, water from the Berg River is also pumped to the dams to raise their levels. Though the quality of this water is pristine for most of the year, the dam water has been subject to fluctuations in quality. As a result, the Drakenstein Municipality decided to construct a water treatment works on Paarl Mountain to ensure a high standard of water quality. Head of Water Services for Drakenstein, André Kowalewski, said that the new plant has some of the highest available technology and that the whole process of purification is constantly monitored in each and every stage of the process.

“Many objections were received about constructing the waterworks at Meulwater, but if one now looks at the building, it is aesthetically pleasing. “A stringent environmental impact study was followed. Granite which was blasted from the building site was used as cladding for the building and the gardens are planted with Paarl Mountain fynbos. “The Drakenstein Municipality is committed to supplying residents with only the best quality water, and this is exactly what this process offers.” The structure has been sunken almost 6 m into the ground, in order to reduce the visual impact of the building. The treatment process is optimised to suit therelativelygood rawwater quality.Itisalso designed to allow future incorporation of an additional dissolved air flotation process within the existing filters, should water quality deteriorate. This is a possibility considering the relatively poor quality of the Berg River water which will supplement the mountain water. The process consists of poly-aluminium chloride (to bind colour and suspended solids in the water), direct filtration through four deep sand-bed equipped with a dual parallel lateral under-drainage system, disinfection with chlorine (to kill any pathogens which may be in the water, and provide a residual disinfectant to counter any possible contaminants which could enter the water in the distribution network), and stabilisation with lime (to soften the water and make it less corrosive). After treatment the water is fed into variousreservoirsin Paarlfrom whereitisdirectly siphoned for general purposes. The treatment works has the capacity to treat 8 megalitres of water per day. The treatment works will officially be opened by Drakenstein Mayor, Gesie van Deventer and the Western Cape minister of environmental affairs and development planning, Anton Bredell.

As deel van pogings om kinders te motiveer om skool by te woon, het Khula in samewerking met Pioneer Foods op Mandeladag reënjassies uitgedeel aan kinders van graad R tot graad 3 by Mbekweni Primêr, Daljosafat Primêr en Groenheuwel Primêr. Hier is Inge du Plessis van Khula saam met ’n leerder Inathi Magadlela. Khula is ’n gemeenskapsgebaseerde program wat volhoubare ondersteuning bied aan kinders wat as gevolg van hul omstandighede uitval uit die skoolsisteem. Hulle poog om dié jeugdiges en hul gesinne emosioneel, sosiaal, geestelik en opvoedkundig by te staan.

VEELS GELUK MADIBA. Groenheuwel Primêr se manspersoneel het op Mandeladag vir die skool ’n sementsypaadjie gelê. Man betrap ná inbraak ’n VERMEENDE dief is op heterdaad betrap, enkele minute nadat hy glo ’n diefstal gepleeg het. Dit kom nadat op-en-wakker Paarlse polisiebeamptes ’n verdagte persoon in die vroeë oggendure gewaar het. Die beamptes het omstreeks 04:45 Sondagoggend patrollie gery in Sentraal-Paarl toe die man wat ’n sak gedra het, in Hoofstraat opgelet is. Die beamptes het dadelik onraad vermoed en het versoek dat die verdagte hulle wys wat in sy sak is. In die sak was ’n verskeidenheid waardevolle goedere soos sonbrille, ’n mp3-speler en selfs ’n Rolex-horlosie. By verdere navraag het die verdagte erken dat hy by ’n woning in Nantesstraat ingebreek het. Die polisie is na die toneel en het die eienaar van die woning wakker geklop om die goedere te identifiseer. Dit was inderdaad sy besittings, maar hy het nie eens geweet dat ’n dief in sy huis was nie. Die verdagte het toegang tot die woning gekry vanaf ’n motorhuis. Leroy van Greunen is in hegtenis geneem. Polisiewoordvoerder kapt Louise du Plessis het gesê dat dit die soveelste diefstal is wat die afgelope paar maande plaasvind, waartydens huiseienaars binne hul woning is terwyl die misdaad plaasvind. “Die publiek moet dubbeld seker maak dat hul wonings goed beveilig is, al is hulle tuis.”

Inligting gesoek ná vrou se dood DIE Paarl polisie vra die publiek se hulp om inligting te verskaf nadat ’n vrou in ’n trefen-trap-voorval doodgery is. Volgens die bestuur van die klub, is ’n man besig om die rondes te doen by veral besighede om vir hierdie klub geld in te samel. Dan steek hulle dit in hul eie sak. Alle besighede in die Paarl word dus versoek om geen bydrae te lewer aan die sogenaamde fondsinsamelingsendelinge nie. Heritage symposium THE tragedy of the forced removals of black and coloured communities by the government during Apartheid will be commemorated during a function to be held in Paarl in October. It will form part of the tenth symposium of Heritage South Africa from 4 to 6 October, hosted by the Drakenstein Heritage Foundation. Social historians, researchers, architects and restorers will discuss the social and economic history of the Valley and its influence on the development of the famous Cape homesteads. They will discuss how the three forces – indigenous peoples, settlers and slaves – combined to shape our heritage. Guests will visit 18th century sites in the centre of town and on surrounding farms during the symposium. The symposium will trace the development of the Cape from its geological beginnings, through the earliest inhabitants, to the arrival of the Dutch East India Company. Everyone is welcome. The symposium will be held in the hall of the Toringkerk. Transport will be available to various farms. Wellington’s very own Bar One Man LUSHWILL ROSSOUW from Wellington was crowned the winner of the reality television show The Bar One Man Hunt and walked away with prizes worth more than a million rand. The search for the ultimate Bar One Man started at the end of March with 25 contestants battling it out for the elusive title. Contestants were tested both mentally and physically and were subjected to hard-core challenges. The ultimate Bar One Man should not only be physically strong and mentally fit, but should also have heart and be able to play the game on a social level, and Rossouw had it all. Not only does he walk away with R500 000 cash courtesy of Nestlé, but also a Harley-Davidson V-Rod Muscle 2012 to the value of R300 000 and a Mahindra XUV 500 to the value of R300 000. In addition to this he will participate in next year’s three instalment as head judge as well as play the role of brand ambassador for Nestlé/Bar One. “For me this was a very amazing journey and I have definitely learnt that whatever life throws at you and what ever obstacles get in your way, if you dig deeper and push through, the sky is the limit!” Rossouw said that his most unforgettable moment in the competition was, when he had to jump off the Soweto Towers.

He completed matric at Huguenot High School in Wellington. He chose to participate when a client encouraged him to do so. “Funny enough it was on the last day of the entries that I entered.” “I would like to thank my family, friends and fans in Wellington and Paarl for the overwhelming support you gave me through the challenge, it carried me through.” Rossouw comes from a family of five namely his parents Annaline and Lionel, sister Miche and brother Lee-Heino Rossouw. “It was kept a secret from us and the rest of the public that he was participating until the episodes started showing. “We cheered and screamed and made it known to all our friends and family and in doing this they all followed the episodes and supported him as well,” Miche said. “The evening of the finals we knew in our hearts that he could and would be the winner and when they announced his name we jumped up and screamed and cried in each others arms - we were so very proud of him.”

PLAY. The play Krismis van Map Jacobs, a prescribed work for grade 12, can be seen at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town from 1 to 3 August. This work is set against the backdrop of forced removals in the Cape Flats in the early 70s. After seven years in prison, feared gang leader Map Jacobs is eligible for parole and the question on everybody’s lips is whether Map has changed or not. The play examines the pain and grief of that time and also looks at the good times before the “Big Days”. Fietna Lekker Jy THE production Fietna Lekker Jy, a sensitive drama/comedy in Afrikaans can be seen at the Old Mill Theatre from 2 to 5 August. The play was written by Hein Poole in 2011 and is now reworked. It takes place in the Boland in the 1980’s and is about boys discovering their sexuality. A bond between three close friends is also explored. Issues about how the community and their parents ignored their gay status but, still the gay community grew and became a serious and sensitive matter at the time. The director is André Samuels, the writer is Hein Poole (also one of the actors), Gaerin Hauptfleisch is the stage manager and technician, and Dean van der Ventel and Lee Roodt are both actors. Frank Pietersen hosts gala concert THIS year the Frank Pietersen Music Centre will be holding their annual gala concert on Saturday 28 July at Ihlumehlo Secondary School in Mbekweni at 15:00 and on Sunday 29 July at Bethel Congregational Church at 17:00. This concert will have something for everyone’s musical taste. Once again the public can get a glimpse of the amazing musical activities which take place at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre as the centre will showcase its talent from the youngsters to the seniors, with music through the ages from the Baroque period to Strauss’s well-known Waltzes and then to Light Music, Jazz and African music. The junior and intermediate strings will combine with the junior percussion ensemble in a junior orchestra. The senior windband and senior percussion ensembles will perform and the senior strings will play Strauss Waltzes and Bach’s famous Double Violin Concerto with soloists Cara Paulse and Catherine Kramer. Some string players from Kuilsriver will join the music centre’s members.

Those who love the sound of Brass Instruments will be delighted in the brass ensemble where the music centre’s learners will be complemented by members of the Moravian Brass Players. Jazz lovers will be impressed by what the FPMC youngsters are able to do in the jazz ensemble and of course no centre concert can be complete without the youth orchestra under the leadership of Milton Pietersen. The choirs will also be showcased. The youth and adult choirs will both be conducted by Johannes Schickerling and the children’s choir will perform for the first time under the new conductor Rykie Boeke who was a former conductor at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir. To close off the Gala Concert the African Music Department will put on a show with marimbas, traditional African instruments, djembe drums, singing and dancing. Nixon’s recital pays homage to Debussy INTERNATIONALLY renowned South African pianist Mark Nixon will perform works by Brahms, Debussy and Liszt at the Nederburg Concert on 29 July. The works include Johannes Brahms’ emotional Six Piano Pieces, opus 118, and four dramatic transcriptions by Franz Liszt: Widmung (Schumann), Auf Flügeln des Gesanges (Mendelssohn), Aufenthalt Mark Nixon (Schubert) and Isoldens Liebestod (Wagner). Popular works by Claude Debussy make up the remainder of the programme and mark the 150th anniversary of the great French composer’s birth. Currently residing in London, where he is head of keyboard at King’s College School in Wimbledon, Nixon is a sought-after chamber musician and accompanist. His engagements have included many solo and chamber concerts in Holland, France and the United Kingdom. His Nederburg recital forms part of a

South African concert tour. A founding member of the London Song Circle and Ensemble Hans Gal, Nixon is also a member of the King’s Piano Trio. In 2010 he released a critically acclaimed CD entitled Songs, featuring South Africanborn soprano Erica Eloff, and more recently he released a solo CD which includes some of the works he will perform at Nederburg. A graduate of the University of Cape Town, the Amsterdam Conservatory and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, he has received many prestigious awards, including first prizes in the Adolph Hallis and Nederburg-Unisa National Piano Competitions. Colors and Core bury the hatchet LOCAL exporters Colors Fruit and Core Fruit have decided to settle the dispute between them which resulted from a group of former executives of Colors Fruit leaving the company back in 2010 to join Core Fruit. Colors initially claimed damages of R15 million from Core, which belongs to Polokwane businessman and fruit farmer André Lombard. The claim was against a number of former employees of Colors who set up new offices for Core in Paarl in September 2010. In a joint media release, Colors Fruit and Core Fruit say that while competition is healthy for the fruit industry, it needs to be handled in a responsible manner to protect the long-term investment made by producers and retailers. “We are happy to engage in healthy competition to the advantage of the industry, with our producers and customers always

The trend in Europe to bottle on the continent has impacted the local industry, with the bulk export figures up by 31% while exports of wine packaged in South Africa are down by 9%. With nearly all major South African volume brands sold in Europe moving to bulk exports, South Africa for the first time in years now exports more bulk than bottled wine (in 2010 only 40% of our exports were bulk). However there are exciting bright spots with bottled exports. Exports to Germany (South Africa’s third biggest market) have risen by 5%, Canada has increased by 16%, Finland by 8%, Kenya by 55%, Japan by 21% and Russia by 41%.

Property revalued in Drakenstein THE general revaluation of property across Drakenstein is currently being undertaken by Rode Valuations of Wellington. This valuation is undertaken every four years, to ensure that valuations for property tax purposes, remain market related. Data is currently being collected and some sample properties are visited, after which market related valuations will be finalised, chiefly according to the existing data base. About 18 000 homes are being valued, and 2500 farms in the district. According to Herman Smit of Rode Valuations, property prices in Drakenstein have not dropped, and in some places have risen by between 5% and 8% over the past four years. Property owners will be informed of their new valuations for property tax purposes by about 1 November, after which there is a period of 30 days for owners to raise objections. If owners are not satisfied by the response of the valuers, the can appeal to the valuation court early next year. The valuation as at 1 July 2012, will become effective on 1 July 2013.

THE annual sheep counting competition is a highlight of Agri Mega Week which will take place at Mega Park in Bredasdorp from 12 to 15 September. The ability to count every animal in a flock of fast moving sheep from a distance is an art mastered by only a few. This year’s competition will again be hosted under the watchful eyes of Daan van Tonder, the committed team of Driekop Dewetsdorp Sheep Counting Officials and BKB. The competition will commence at 9:00 on Friday 14 September at the SAB Arena at Mega Park. Search for South Africa’s top cellar talent begins in Paarl THE search for South Africa’s top cellar talent has commenced in Paarl with a gruelling round in wine identification, as part of the annual Cellar Assistant of the Year competition. Ten candidates from the Paarl Wine Route were presented with 20 wines whose cultivar and analysis they were asked to identify in a blind tasting format. The candidates, who were nominated by their home estates, received intensive training over preceding weeks. Those who performed well will join their colleagues from other regions

across the Western Cape in the National Cellar Worker of the Year competition, the highest level of recognition for South African wine cellar workers. The final phase pares the group down to the top third, who do a presentation on a wine topic of their choice before the judging panel. Finally the candidates analyse a wine in discussion with the panel, who pre-select the wine. Soon after additional wine wards and regions joined in, forming the National Cellar Worker of the Year competition. The judging panel is

comprised of respected industry members, and is convened by experienced wine judge and lecturer Charl Theron. Previous winners have included those who have shown initiative in starting their own career in wine; often under adverse personal conditions. The winning cellar worker will be announced at a gala event on 22 August at the Grande Roche in Paarl. The top ten Chenin Blanc and Shiraz wines of Paarl will be announced at the same event, by invitation only. A public tasting will take place in November.

Gun run entries open ENTRIES for one of Cape Town’s biggest and most popular road running events, the OUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run, are open. Participants can enter online at www.thegunrun.co.za. The event takes place on Sunday 14 October and participants can choose to take part in the 21 km half-marathon, 10 km run/walk or the 5 km fun run/walk, aimed at families, younger participants, beginners and walkers. Last year saw the introduction of the RaceTec timing system for the half-marathon, which will again make use of this system that offers state of the art technology and ensures that the processing of results and times is far easier and more userfriendly. Those runners who already have a RaceTec chip can use it for the half-marathon, while those that do not, will need to

buy one for R100. Runners will not require a chip for the 10 km or 5 km events. Runners are advised to note the amended start times for the 10 km and 5 km. The 21 km starts at 07:00, the 10 km at 08:00 and the 5 km at a later start time of 09:00. Cut off has moved to 10:30 so participants have ample time to complete their event. Participants can enter online or pick up an entry form from any Sportsmans Warehouse, where entries will be taken in store. Life skills for Boland athletes RECENTLY twelve youth athletes from the Boland Athletics Excellence Squad attended a life skills workshop in preparation for the 2013 athletics season. The athletes who attended the life skills workshop were Mandolene Hermanus, Kulthoom Gaidien, Tamryn Cupido, Audrey-Kay Noble, Natasha Obermeyer, Taylia Visagie, Ciani Loubser, Theo Frantz, Craig du Plessis, Luvo Ngwevu, PeterJohn Waterboer and Gantham Caesar. The objective of the workshop was to prepare talented athletes in a more holistic manner for the 2013 athletics season. Under the guidance of the Sport Science Institute the athletes where introduced to topics

such as goal setting, performance measurement, self-esteem, self-confidence, taking responsibility, leadership, ethics, assertiveness, respecting differences, conflict management, touring, and communication. During September to December Boland Athletics will be implementing a talent identification programme to identify more athletes for the 2013 athletics season. The talent identification programme will consist of coaching courses, life skills workshops and talent identification athletics meetings. The dates and venues of the projects that will form part of the talent identification programme will be announced during the next few weeks.

Hy het onlangs op Oudtshoorn deelgeneem en het uit negentien jaers in die 2,1 liter gemodifiseerde klas as wenner uit die stryd getree. Hy gaan in September in Bloemfontein aan die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe deelneem. Saam met hom is Olla Daniels van Franschhoek wat op Oudtshoorn in die 2,1 liter klas tweede was.

Sporttelbord RUGBY *Rangers bly ’n krag Rangers het verlede naweek gewys dat daar moet rekening gehou word met hulle nadat hulle vir Riverstones met twee punte verslaan het. Die eindtelling was 20-18. In gietende reën het Rangers vooren agterlangs gedomineer, maar in sulke omstandighede kon die wedstryd enige kant toe geswaai het. Riverstones kon maklik die knoop deurgehaak het as hulle net beter pale toe gekorrel het. Die uitblinkers aan Rangers se kant was Kabamba en Honda. Rangers speel Vrydagaand weg teen Allandale op Drakenstein Gevangenis se velde. HOCKEY * Paarl Club Last Saturday the men’s first team had it their way against Conberg which resulted in a 5-0 victory for Paarl, which sets them well on the top of the log for the Men’s 3rd division. The second team played away against Central at Vygieskraal and secured a 1-0 victory. They moved from the 7th place on the log in the Men’s 5th Division to the 5th spot. The game was very evenly balanced, with good possession and territory gained by both teams. Fortunately, Paarl’s defence was just too good for Central. The only goal scored in the game came from a pass with a deflected shot by Mervan Davids passing the goalkeeper of Central to score the goal. The second half was very much in favour of Paarl, but Paarl just could not capitalise to achieve more goals. Simondium trap water VIOLETS het Saterdag in gietende reën die span van Simondium behoorlik laat les opsê deur hulle met 32-3 te klop. Die wedstryd wat eers laat aan die gang kon kom weens die nat speeltoestande, was gekenmerk deur sterk skrumwerk en goeie lynstaanspel van Violets. Die voorspelers, met Granville September en Monrico Carolissen aan die spits, het die span van Simondium behoorlik laat modder ruik en ente ver oor die plek-plek uiters nat veld gedryf. Dit het vir die flanke kans gegee om die agterspelers van Simondium onder geweldige

druk te plaas. Speler van die wedstryd, Adriaan Toontjies, het uitgetroon met goeie spel op die grond. Agterlangs het Sam Adonis, Aldino Brown en Emilio Siebrits goeie werk verrig met goeie aanvallende spel en op verdediging. Alhoewel Simondium eerste punte aangeteken het deur ’n strafskop vroeg in die wedstryd deur die pale te jaag, was dit daarna net eenrigtingverkeer met Violets wat vyf keer agter Simondium se doellyn gaan kuier het. NEW. The much anticipated “Mini-Astro” hockey field was officially opened on Monday evening. This sporting facility located at Paarl Girls’ High has been a few years in the making, but, as was witnessed by the guests at the function, is much appreciated by the learners of both Girls’ and Boys’ High. Hopes are that hockey will gain ground at both schools and a full astro pitch will eventually become a reality.
