FOTO: MARYKE SWART

Matriculant abandons newborn MARYKE SWART

A matric learner is facing a charge of attempted murder after having given birth to a baby boy and abandoning him in a public toilet in Mbekweni. Community members found the baby and informed the police. Mbekweni Police spokesperson, Sergeant Nceba Vanqa, said that when police officers arrived at the scene, a community member approached them with a baby in a blanket. The baby was crying. Members of the community were able to point out the mother of the child, who is originally from Kraaifontein, but attends a local school in Mbekweni. The matriculant (18) was on her way to write

exams when she unexpectedly went into labour. She was still wearing her grey school uniform and had blood stains on her legs when police approached her. She was accompanied by her aunt with whom she had been staying during her final exams. According to her aunt, she wasn’t aware of her niece’s pregnancy. The young woman told police she had abandoned the baby as she didn’t want to disappoint her mother, who is a single parent, and because she wouldn’t be able to raise the child. She also said that she and the baby’s father had broken off their relationship. The baby and his mother were transported to Paarl Hospital where both were examined. Vanqa said doctors have reported that the baby is stable, normal and healthy, weighing 2,3 kg. The baby’s mother has not been arrested and

police are investigating the matter. Social services have also been informed. According to Millicent Merton from the directorate of communication at the Western Cape Education Department, the baby’s mother will be treated the same as any other matriculant who falls ill or is pregnant and unable to write an exam. If she can produce a valid doctor’s certificate, she will be able to write the supplementary exam in the first semester of the next school year. She says the WCED policy on Managing Learner Pregnancy in Public Schools, provides guidelines on how schools should support pregnant learners. These guidelines are available on the department’s website. Mothers who feel that they can’t keep or take care of their babies can contact Open Arms of Hope for free counselling on 076 812 0783 or visit www.openarmsofhope.wozaonline.co.za.

“Peace begins at home” is the theme of this year’s 16 Days of Activism for no violence against Women and Children Campaign. On Tuesday Drakenstein Municipality kicked off their campaign of 16 Days of Activism at the Civic Centre in Paarl. Municipal employees, executive managers, Mayco, councillors and various community stakeholders were in attendance. Mayor Gesie van Deventer called on all residents and employees in Drakenstein to blow the whistle on abusers and not keep quiet. She said that as a community we must make as much noise as possible to create awareness and not to forget the many victims of abuse and violence, especially in our own community. The Municipal Manager, Johann Mettler, raised the issue of how violence has become a game

A hoaxster had Paarlites in a spin this weekend when he sent off an SMS to hundreds of residents claiming that severe load shedding would be taking place in the Drakenstein throughout the week. A person calling himself Martino Johnson and claiming to be the “Executive Municipal Manager”, sent out the SMS stating, amongst others, that the power would be off on various days, during the middle of the day for more than two hours. The false information was distributed throughout the community by means of WhatsApp and SMS. Not only were residents shocked at the load-shedding schedule, but at the poor language that “Johnson” had used in compiling the SMS. The municipality very quickly had to douse the fire, as this message spread like wildfire. Municipal Manager Johann Mettler said that they were fully aware of the SMS that had been sent out. “The SMS was sent in the

Van Deventer also called on the community and all the employees of the municipality to contact her if they are aware of abuse happening in the community or even in the municipality, as she is committed to help victims. She urged victims to speak out and to make sure that the perpetrators of violence do not go free. The Drakenstein Municipality, along with various stakeholders, will conduct activities for the entire campaign, continuing to raise awareness and supporting victims wherever possible. “We ask the community to wear a white ribbon to show support throughout the campaign and beyond so that we work together for a safe and violence free society,” said Van Deventer.

Fuel price decrease just in time for the holiday FRANS LE ROUX I doubt that there is news that generates as much happiness throughout the country as that of a drop in fuel prices. Nothing as simple provides so many smiles

across the board when it is announced on a monthly basis. Once again motorists will be reaping the rewards from the global reduction in the sales of crude oil. This is in fact thanks to a couple of things but applause should mainly be given to those world-dominating Americans. The lovely folk living in the USA have in the past couple of months decided they will use more natural shale gas to power their massive country and due to this the global demand for crude oil imports have plunged. In short then, South Africa has also been taking advantage of this decision for the past four months. With four consecutive drops in the price of all fuels types, motorists should indeed rejoice.

This year kicked off with three big increases from January through to March, which brought the price of 95 unleaded-petrol to a staggering R13,98 per litre. Relief was only felt later in 2014 as the price started to plummet from September onwards. If you calculate September through to December the total decline is close to R2,00 per litre. If you drive an average city car with a 50-litre fuel tank and fill it once a week, this saving is quiet significant. You could easily save R100 per week which quickly adds up to R400 for the month. That is enough to nearly fill your car for a fifth time, if needed. Paarl Post posted a question on what our readers make of this good news on our Face-

book page, to which they responded as follows: Grant Alfonso Petersen said, “Great stuff”, while a few others weren’t as positive. JM Memories wrote, “And early in January the fuel price will go up by 86c just as motorists will be returning from their holiday.” Abigail Steenkamp summed up the situation very aptly: “Geez people, please stop moaning. If the price rises everyone moans and if it goes down everyone still moans. A 72c decrease means more petrol and more petrol means more fun ... just enjoy the perk ... we don’t get many of those in SA.” Motorists can look forward to even more reductions in 2015.

After Deidré and John Fredericks lost their little girl to meningitis, Deidré went searching for answers and decided to start the Meningitis Association of South Africa to create awareness about the illness. In 2010, three-year-old Chelsea Fredericks died of meningococcal meningitis after being diagnosed just a day earlier. The Fredericks family’s lives literally changed in a matter of hours. “Chelsea started vomiting the Wednesday afternoon. I brought her home from day-care and gave her medicine for vomiting. Later that evening, it seemed that she was getting better, but the vomiting started again in the early hours of Thursday morning and she also had a severe fever. We rushed her to the emergency room. As we undressed her, we saw red marks on her body that had not been there before. The doctor told us that these were all symptoms of meningitis. At 18:00 that evening the doctor pronounced her brain-dead and the morning of Friday 11 June, she passed away.” Deidré can remember that 11 June was the start of the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup and as everyone else was celebrating, their family was experiencing their saddest day. She said that as she walked away from the hospital that morning, she wanted to know why it happened to them and what the disease was about. “I discovered that there wasn’t a lot of information on meningitis available in South Africa. I started researching online as a coping mechanism and to understand what had happened to us.” Shortly after Chelsea’s death, Deidré started the Meningitis Association of South Africa with the support of her family and friends. “I knew that I was not the only parent unaware of the symptoms or signs of meningitis and was therefore

She currently runs the organisation part-time and hopes to open a office in the near future. Their mission is to educate, raise money and create awareness of meningitis among the public and health care professionals in order to prevent death and disability from the disease. “With meningitis, time is of the essence. Early detection and treatment are critical to a full recovery.” They also provide grief and bereavement counselling, financial assistance and support services to individuals affected by meningitis. “As meningitis can devastate families and communities, we aim to improve the quality of care for individuals affected by the disease.” Deidré explained that some of the early warning signs or symptoms are a fever, vomiting, headaches and a general feeling of unwellness. She said that red spots show symp-

Toddler raped by teenage boys A three-year-old girl was raped by four teenage boys at her house in Silvertown, Mbekweni. Mbekweni police spokesperson, Sergeant Nceba Vanqa, said the toddler’s mother reported the incident at around 22:00 on 16 November. According to the mother, her daughter was crying and complaining of itching and pain in her private parts. When questioned the little girl told her mother what had happened.

Vanqa says information given by an 11-year-old eyewitness suggests that the toddler was playing in the yard in front of her house in Zakuza Street at around 18:00 when the suspects took her to the back of the yard and raped her one after the other. The underage boys have not been arrested and the case has been referred to the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit for further investigation.

toms more specific to meningitis and septicaemia and are less common in milder illnesses. Limb pain, pale skin, and cold hands and feet often appear earlier than the rash, neck stiffness, a dislike of bright lights and confusion. Other signs in babies are a tense or bulging soft spot on their heads, refusing to feed, irritable when picked up, a high-pitched or moaning cry, a stiff body with jerky movements, or else floppy and lifelessness. Fever is often absent in babies under three months. “I believe we all can make a difference by joining hands in the fight against this disease that can kill within hours,” Deidré said. * On Saturday 29 November you can burn 2 000 calories with a twohour Zumbathon with a professional instructor at William Lloyd Primary School from 08:00 until 10:00 in aid of the Meningitis Association of South Africa. Entrance fee is R40. For more information, call Deidré on 084 248 3372 or visit www.meningitis.org.za.

What to do after matric? Should matriculants go and study immediately after school, or should they take a year off. Two Paarl matriculants tell of their journey after school. Tandy-Lee Marinus, La Rochelle 2009: I mingled with the same friends from pre-primary until my matric year. Many of them were much more intellectual than what I was, so hearing that they wanted to become marine biologists and lawyers, definitely raised the bar high. I completed my matric year in 2009 at La Rochelle Girls’ High School, a school always encouraging its learners to aim high. It was not until Grade 10 that I set my mind on pursuing a career in the media. At a young age, my father would drag me along to his lectures at the University of the Western Cape. Some would think this to be a small gesture, but being a father of two, married, Accounting student and full time employee, was a glimpse of what was expected of me. He was the first family member to receive a degree and I thought it well that I follow in his footsteps. I was accepted for a three-year National Diploma course in Journalism at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. During my first six months I was constantly contemplating whether I had made the wrong career choice. Coming from a school where there was always structure and discipline, it was difficult to maintain afterwards. The disappointment of travelling all the way from Paarl to Bellville, to find that unenthusiastic lecturers had not arrived for class, left me extremely unmotivated at times. I failed a subject during my first year, requiring me to redo it the follow-

ing year, a minor but consuming setback. But I went on to complete my second year and survive my first intern job, where I gained much experience of the work. It is the investigative work and natural inquisitiveness of being a journalist that excites me. Learning however, did not stop there, I endured seven months of unemployment, which caused many sleepless nights. I cringe knowing that 25,2% of South Africa’s working population is unemployed. Deciding to attend university after school has opened many doors. I will be graduating next year and am now proud to say that I have more than a matric certificate next to my name. At the age of 23 I have however yet to travel the world. I envy those who were lucky enough to take a gap year. Babette Beyers, Paarl Girls High 2010: When I reached grade 11 at Paarl Girls High School I had no idea what career I wanted to follow. I discussed this with my mother and told her that I would then rather do a gap year after matric to find some direction. Needless to say, my mother was not too keen on this but eventually told me that if I wanted to take a gap year, then I must do something constructive and not just bum around. She told me about the Rotary Youth Exchange programme. I did my homework and this appealedtomeandIappliedforexchange at Paarl Rotary. After various meetings, assess-

ments and a gruelling screening camp, I was accepted. I wanted a totally different experience, so I chose Brazil as my home country for a year. All packed and ready to go, I set off for Sao Paulo in January 2011 to a totally strange country of which I knew very little. And on top of that, I would be spending a year with a family I had never met and who do not speak a word of English. I was enrolled into a school in Sao Paulo and also did community work at a school for autism. For the first few weeks I was completely disorientated because of the huge communication gap. Basically no one who I came across could speak English. But almost as if over night, I started latching onto the language and was able to start communicating. While in Brazil I applied at AAA in Cape Town to study marketing and communication and even had to write my acceptance exams there. I had the time of my life in Brazil. I travelled the country extensively. A highlight was a week-long trip on the Amazon, staying on a river boat with only hammocks as beds. I learnt the language, culture and beauty of this wonderful country and it is something that can never be taken from me. I also now have a Brazilian family as well as friends right across the world. I feel as if the world’s doors are open for me. During my year away from home, I became independent and self assured and am ready for anything that life throws at me.

Tandylee Marinus.

Briewe Letters

27 November, 2014

Fight for rights for more than 16 days The international campaign 16 days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children has once again kicked off with much fanfare. But at the same time we read about a youngster who was allegedly raped by other children. Unfortunately incidents like these happen far too regularly on our own doorstep. The campaign was born due to the many daily atrocities which are committed against the most vulnerable members of our society. During the next few weeks, this campaign will be marked by many ceremonies and functions, but it seems that once the 16 days are over, the plight of abused women and children is forgotten – let alone the abuse of men, which is never mentioned. Despite a world-renowned constitution and a legislative overhaul that safeguards all people’s rights, South Africa is still home to high levels of violence, especially against women and children. Unfortunately no amount of policing can prevent most of these acts. It is the result of a mindset which has become inherent in a society suffering at the hands of an inadequate justice system and police force, where people think they can literally get away with murder. Unless the powers that be focus on socio-economic upliftment and improved education, this will never change. Most importantly, moral values should be instilled at a young age and the punishment should fit the crime.

Your problems aren’t that big after all They say it never rains but it pours. And that is exactly what the past month or so has been like for me. Bad luck rained down on me like a tsunami of bird droppings. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I got knocked down – so badly that I actually did not want to try to get up again. The last, well hopefully, was my car’s clutch giving in just the other day. Not only is it a huge inconvenience not having wheels for a good few days, but the expense which comes with it is rather numbifying. So kids, be warned, for Christmas I may have to dig around in the kitchen and garage to come up with some very low cost or unwanted gifts that may be hidden away under a heavy layer of dust. At times like this I wonder why can life continue so deliciously, undisturbed until one day, a day like any other, things start to go extremely wrong. But after contemplating my past month or so of bad luck I begin to see things in a different light. How bad have things actually been? I still have a roof over my head, food to fill my tummy, some money in the bank (even though it may only be a measly amount), a warm bed to sleep in and someone to love me – well, perhaps only my dog. So when people around me now start griping about the blows they havebeendealt, likeabusinessdeal which didn’t quite work out, or their child not being chosen for the holy-grail first team, I almost feel the steam come out of my ears with anger. Things could be so much worse. Returning to your vehicle, which you parked only a moment ago, to find a window smashed and some measly belongings stolen, is not pleasant, but not as bad as a car crash in which you may be seriously injured or a loved one has died Your child will no doubt recover from an irritating bout of flu, which has been keeping you up all night, but round the corner a mother is praying for her child’s life, who

probably will not make it to see another Christmas. Life is full of unpleasant surprises. That is why these minor surprises that hit us should be hit right back, full-fisted and with a smile. Even though I did become rather irritated by my own spate of bad luck, admittedly sometimes even feeling sorry for myself, I did manage to regroup and realise that all these ‘injuries’ I have incurred are superficial. I can truly thank my lucky stars that I can, for example, afford to replace the car’s clutch, and above all share my sorrows and frustrations with good friends who will make me laugh, forget about these silly irritations, and continue life with a hop in my step. It is like meeting people and asking “how are you”. More often than not the reply is: “Well it doesn’t help to complain” or “don’t ask”. Then, the lady who works for me arrives each morning, never a minute late. She too has had her fair share of bad luck. Perhaps fair share isn’t the right word, as it puts my little blue days to shame. She was abandoned by her husband, leaving her with a young child and no income in the Eastern Cape. She was eventually forced to leave her child and home behind to find greener pastures in the Western Cape. She shares a flimsy house with more people than most of us would feel comfortable with at any given moment. And she is only practically able to see her daughter twice a year. But she strides into my house, soaked during a downpour or in searing heat, having walked from the taxi rank. Sometimes she does not even feel too well when the winter bugs attack the soul. Her umbrella broken by a sudden gush of wind and a hole has developed in her shoe en route. Each day, no matter what blow she has taken, she will walk into my house with a true hop in her step and the warmest smile on her face, and say to me, as I grumpily depart for work: “Miss Lise, today is going to be another beautiful day”.

Toe ek daar opdaag was daar reeds begrafnisgangers vanaf Kaapstad.

No thanks after good deed On Sunday 16 November at about 11:15, we turned left onto Dorp Street from Bergrivier Boulevard. My husband saw a man jump over the wall on the side of the street and tuck a laptop under his jacket. My father stopped the car and my brother, Ezra Cyster and my husband Gary Williams, jumpedoutofthecarandchased the man. They ran across the street and followed him. Luckily a driver from the Main Road noticed they were chasing someone and he followed the man in his car while my father and I also drove after him. The man in the car stopped and threw the thief against the fence, my brother arrived and

kept him in a position that prevented him getting away. He tried to bite Ezra and to get a knife out of his pocket, but could not manage to do so. Gary climbed in the car with the other driver, to drive along the path the man ran and gather the items that fell out of the thief’s hands. We contacted the police and they were there immediately. The owner of the stolen goods arrived at the police station, but a simple thank you or act of appreciation was not even mentioned. “Saying thank you, is everyday etiquette and a simple courtesy that takes only a moment.”

JOY PAARL

Silly firework celebrations Once again an illegal spate of firework eruptions took place with Guy Fawkes celebrations recently. And not only for one evening, but for the entire week. It is rather ironic that these celebrations are still taking place in South Africa, because Guy Fawkes is a celebration which was brought here by the colonists. As a very large part of our society blame colonists for so much suffering in the past, why is it that they now celebrate Guy Fawkes? And to top it all, I would like to know whether those who are ruthlessly firing off fireworks, actually know that Guy Fawkes was actually a man, and do they know what he did and why this celebration takes place in England? As per usual, only fools rush in.

) I refer to the SMS dated 20 November re: “Why do drivers of Paarl take a snail’s pace, etc.” I am one of those people. Op 9 Desember 2013 is graad 3- maligne osteosarkoom by Pieter-Jan gediagnoseer.

* A Gr 11 learner of Hugenote High School has lost his battle against cancer.

AWARENESS: Amputee, Paul Steyn, the founder of the Paul Steyn Foundation, embarked on one of his fundraising walks on Friday 14 November, starting his 97 km walk in Wellington and finishing at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on 23 November. When Steyn reached the Arboretum in Paarl, he said that he had forgotten the challenge of walking with crutches, as he has become used to his pros theses. Through this initiative, Steyn wishes to highlight the plight of amputees in rural areas that have to walk with crutches for about 12 km to receive essential services at clinics. How much do you need to retire? SCHALK LOUW Saving for retirement is a lot like batting first in a cricket match. You know you have to save and do so to the best of your ability, but how many “runs” do you truly need to retire comfortably? The easiest place to start is to look at the income you currently need to live. Most experts recommend that you should use approximately 80% of your current required income as a benchmark for what you need after retirement. I myself will not necessarily guarantee the reliability of this figure, but it provides us with a starting point nonetheless. I am going to try to keep my example as simple as possible, but it would be wise to include more variable that can affect you personally, in this calculation. Examples of variables include the expectation that your health may deteriorate or that you may still have to cover debt such as your bond, after retirement. Let us suggest that you currently earn R15 000 monthly. By applying the 80% rule, we will assume that you will need R12 000 monthly after retirement. Unlike food products, human beings do not reflect “use by” dates and we have to rely on a “safe withdrawal rate” to ensure that we do not outlive our savings. According to this rate, you should be able to withdraw 6% of your portfolio yearly, without using any of your remaining capital. This theory is based on the fact

that the historical return on the SA Stock market (since 1964) was about 8% more than the local inflation rate, so if you limit your withdrawals to 6% of your portfolio, you should still have an additional 5%-6% growth in your portfolio to cover inflation. If you then expect to withdraw 6% of your capital annually, the amount in today’s rand value should look something like this: R12 000 x 12 months = R144 000 (annual income), divided by 0,06 (6% safe withdrawal rate) = R2 400 000. Inflation factor: One of the biggest variables associated with your retirement planning, is inflation. If you do not compensate properly for this variable, you may end up severely lacking on your required total. This surely is also one of the most difficult variables to take into account. How does one calculate something that still needs to happen? Let us suggest that you are now aged 40 and that you plan to retire at age 65 (25 years). Using the top of the Reserve Bank’s inflation target range, the best ‘calculated guess’ we can offer on annual inflation, is 6%. A 6% annual inflation will mean that with your current R2 400 000 requirement, you will need a capital of R10 715 928 to retire according to the above-mentioned criteria. For any queries in this regard, phone 021 202 2712 or send an email to Schalk.Louw@psg.co.za.

Wine industry’s young talent Key wine industry representatives recently gathered at Oude Libertas in Stellenbosch to showcase young talent being launched into the sector. Hosted by the Pinotage Youth Development Academy, guest speaker Rico Basson, CEO of VinPro, gave his views on skills and attributes essential to strengthening the South African wine industry’s position as a significant player in the global market. To support his argument, four Academy representatives spoke as part of a new generation of wellqualified young people entering the industry. Two graduates, Dillon Uren, now working at Antonij Rupert and Phelisa Moni from Spice Route, plus two current students, shared their stories and experiences. These four, along with their fellow students, will bring their skills and qualities to benefit the sector and play an important role in achieving the desired transformation of the industry. The Stellenbosch-based Pinotage Youth Development Academy runs a 12-month programme for disadvantaged 18-25 year old South Africans. Its innovative approach follows the pattern of the workplace with clear policies and procedures in place. Learning combines

These bright students from Drakenstein are part of the Pinotage Youth Development Academy. technical theory with practical placements across the entire value chain of wine, from vineyard through to tasting room. It also focuses on personal development, giving its students the confidence, knowledge and ability to ease the transition into the world of work. The Academy’s approach has delivered impressive results. The first intake of 25 students completed their studies in May 2014, with a 96% retention rate and all students achieving a 75% pass mark or better. Within three months of completing the programme, 21 of the 24

graduates were in employment. Nikki Munro, programme director, strongly believes that the Academy’s students will make a vital difference in the years to come. “Our Academy’s graduates have an excellent understanding of the A-Z of wine from a technical point of view, strongly embedded through their practical experience. Combine this with a highly developed degree of self-awareness and self-confidence and they are already bringing the requisite skills and right attitude that will guarantee a bright future for the country’s wine industry.”

TREES DONATION: Postwink Recycling Solutions recently donated 40 trees to New Orleans Primary School via Food and Trees For Africa’s, Trees for All program. By donating these trees and having the learners help them with the planting, they hope to raise awareness about the importance of nature and looking after it. Some of the learners were even allocated trees to water every day until the end of the school year. They also initiated a short clean up of the school’s grounds, as they feel it is important for leaners to respect their environment and not to litter. With the staff of Postwink are the learners and acting school principal, George Cook.

Parsons to join Bestmed-ASG team Ashleigh Parsons (14) from Hugenote High School in Wellington will officially join the Bestmed-ASG women’s professional cycling team for next year’s season. Multiple national track champion Ashleigh Parsons has signed with the Bestmed-ASG women’s professional cycling team for the 2015 season. The 14-year-old three-time national track champion, who is also the Western Cape road and time-trial champion in her age group, will sign on as a first-year u. 16 rider. Team manager Owen Botha said they were looking forward to bringing the talented youngster on board and grooming her for top-level competition. The Wellington-based sprinter first grabbed the pro outfit’s atten-

tion with a dominating performance at the national track championships in Durban at the end of April. There she won four gold medals and broke the South African record in the pursuit and time-trial events. “I realise that a team like Bestmed-ASG is always on the lookout to add new talent and I’m very proud to have this opportunity,” said Parsons. “I’m incredibly excited but nervous at the same time, as it’s my first pro team. It’s a dream come true.” She said she believed her track cycling experience would serve to strengthen her performance on the road. “It’s important for any young cyclist to ride on the track, as that is where the basic skills are learnt.” Parsons, who is currently in grade eight at Hugenote High

School, said it was her ultimate ambition to become a full-time pro once she completed her schooling. “The sport is demanding and that would be the perfect reward for the hard work – to ride my bike as my job.” As part of the Bestmed-ASG setup, she said she hoped to add the 2015 national road title in her age category to her existing accolades. “I think this is achievable with hard work.” Extra effort is something Parsons is not afraid of, as she juggles her daily schoolwork and training schedule. “It’s not always easy, but with discipline and a little push and shove from my family, I manage it.” With both her parents having been competitive cyclists, she said her involvement in the sport seemed somehow inevitable.

Ashleigh Parsons.

PHOTO: FRANS LE ROUX

“At the age of four I started riding short fun rides and, after falling in love with the sport, I entered my very first Eric van Enter interpro-

vincial competition at age nine and have never looked back.” Her brother Alexander is a firstyear junior provincial cyclist and her father is former junior Springbok rider Colin Parsons. He said Ashleigh’s true commitment was demonstrated in Bloemfontein a few weeks ago when she was involved in a crash on day one of the interprovincial track champs. “She bounced back for the time trial the following day, only to be involved in another crash involving an unauthorised vehicle in the finish area. “After X-rays, she was cleared to race the next day and went on to win the criterium. She shows great mental strength and determination, which I believe will take her to great achievements.” For more information visit www.inthebunch.co.za

Stellenbosch Cycle Tour: Road closures and potential delays The 2014 Stellenbosch Cycle Tour, presented by Liberty – Own your life Rewards, takes place on Sunday 30 November. Roughly 7 500 riders will line up at Stellenbosch High School to tackle the 95 km route. The annual event, now in its eighth year, will result in a few scheduled road closures and traffic delays in Stellenbosch and surrounding areas on race day. Reneé Jordaan, operations director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust which organises the event, explains: “The recently renamed Stellenbosch Cycle Tour has grown from strength to strength and has become a sought-after race on the annual South African cycling calendar. “To ensure the safety of all participants, and to minimise the impact of the race on the general public, we have implemented measures to control traffic in certain areas where cyclists will be using public roads. “These scheduled road closures and delays will allow for a safe and enjoyable ride for cyclists, while also causing as little inconvenience to road users as possible.” All road users are encouraged to take note of the following road closures and expected delays during the event: ) Road Closures: The following roads will be closed to traffic on the day of the event: Merriman Street (between Jannasch Road and Simonsberg Road) Time: 04:00 – 14:00 Simonsberg Road Time: 04:00 – 14:00 R310 Helshoogte Road (between R44 & Cluver Road) Time: 07:00 – 14:00 R44 (between the R310 Helshoogte and Lang Street, Cloetesville towards Stellenbosch) Time: 07:40 – 13:30 Welgevonden Exit onto the R44
