Venneal was reeds oorlede toe nooddienspersoneel by die toneel opdaag.

* A season worker was killed and several others injured after the driver of the truck they were travelling on lost control and hit a ditch on the Haaskraal Road.

The safety of shoppers at Paarl Mall is in question after armed robbers gained easy access to the mall on Sunday and robbed a prominent cellphone shop. Despite the mall being abuzz with people, shoppers and mall staff were oblivious to the armed robbery taking place right under their noses. According to information, three female personnel were on duty at MTN when a man walked into the shop at about 14:30. One of the employees was attending to the only client in the shop, and the man approached a second employee. He showed her that he was carrying a firearm. He motioned to two accomplices who were standing outside, and they also entered the shop. They told the employee to go to the back room and instructed her to open the safe. Meanwhile, the first robber waited in the shop with the other employees and the client. “The suspects removed all the iPhones, tablets and laptops, placed them in plastic bags and left the store. The suspects fled

the mall in a vehicle,” said Capt Louise du Plessis, the police spokesperson. Paarl Mall confirmed the incident, stating, “Paarl Mall’s on-site security suspected suspicious activity and did excellent work by securing the registration details of the escape vehicle, as well as capturing a clear description of the robbers. No injuries were sustained and the incident is being investigated by the South African Police Service.” Paarl Mall’s Centre Manager, Faizah Behardien, said she is pleased with the level of efficiency with which the mall’s security staff handled the situation. “Safety and security at Paarl Mall is one of our key priorities and we will continue to strive to provide a safe shopping environment for our customers.” A source disagreed, however, stating that there are few safety measures in place at the mall and that the “quality of security cameras is very poor”. Paarl Post approached MTN’s head office for comment, but had not received feedback at the time of going to press.

Enigiemand met inligting kan Groot Drakenstein-polisie by 021 874 8000 of Koch by 021 874 2849 bel. * Farmers in the district of Simondium are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of arsonists in the area.

* A former employee of KWV was sentenced to two years correctional supervision after being found guilty of fraud.

ouers by ’n partytjie was.

Learner’s licences for unemployed youth Last week, scores of youngsters descended on the traffic offices in Wellington to apply for their learner’s licence. This left many bystanders, bewildered at the amount of young applicants, but it soon came to light that this is an initiative of the Drakenstein Council. Municipal manager, Johann Mettler said that annually funds are allocated from the Executive Mayor Ward project fund to be used for various operational projects in the 31 wards. “The needs of the wards are determined through participatory meetings with the

community and therefore the community themselves choose what the needs of the wards are. Seven wards chose a learner’s license project for unemployed youth. “The beneficiaries were recruited through the ward committees and the ward councillor submits the names of beneficiaries to the Speaker’s office for verification and approval. The municipality through this process assisted 222 unemployed young people from the seven wards in Drakenstein area to obtain their learner driver licenses.” “This is one of ways in which Drakenstein Municipality invests in the leaders of the future.” Mettler added.

How safe is our mall? The past weekend’s armed robbery at the Paarl Mall comes as a shock. The public is under the impression that a public area such as a shopping mall should be a safe environment to do their shopping in, away from pick-pockets, unwanted characters and more. The armed robbery which took place on Sunday ended up being rather harmless. But things could just as easily have gone haywire if the wrong moves were made. What also astonishes, is the fact that these robbers, amidst what the mall calls their efficient security, were able to escape very quickly, almost like ghosts in the night. Not only has the Paarl Mall since it’s establishment had various break-ins at night, but cars are often stolen here in broad daylight – and that with an abundance of car-guards in the area, security personnel close-by as well as security cameras. So how safe a shopping experience is the Paarl Mall actually? Perhaps its the mall’s close proximity to the N1 as well as Paarl Station which makes for quick escape routes? Or is it just lack of general security? One can only hope that the latest incident at the mall has been a true wake-up call before something happens that has more dire consequences.

“Of dink jy dis ’n Coca Cola-advertensie?”

Terloops, ek was lanklaas in Port Elizabeth. Ek hoop dis steeds ’n stad met rustige, goedgemanierde motoriste!

These river escapades are getting completely out of hand I am responding to the beautiful front-page photograph of last weeks Paarl Post. Yes, it was a lovely photo, but on the other hand very disturbing. How many times has it not previously been reported that swimming is not permitted here? There are after all very clear signs. But once again, the municipal law enforcers turn a complete blind eye to this. Have councillors actually visited the banks of the river here after these revellers have left? It is an absolute disgrace. Rubbish and broken alcohol bottles are strewn all over the place. The morning after the severe spell of heat was especially bad. Debris that was left behind was even

Pathetically slow process on sewage pipe Please can we have an update on the status of the sewage pipe project under construction in Paarl. This project has been drawn out over a number of years and there seems to be no end in sight. One of my colleagues at work was involved in a bad accident on the corner of Lady Grey and Distillery road where the construction sites on both sides of the road render the intersection very unsafe from a viability point of view. Will this be another “Madupi Project” with an open ended time frame for completion? Surely there must be some penalty clauses for such pathetically slow progress.

blown across the Berg River Boulevard. Now, I really don’t mind people having their spot in the sun, but is it really necessary for them to leave behind an absolute pig-sty. But the other disturbing aspect now is that once many of these revellers tire of the river, they make their way back to Lady Grey Street

via Churchhill and Rooseveld Streets, also leaving behind rubble here and even vandalising post boxes and more. Last weekend my neighbour was accosted by a group of men returning from the river demanding to know where she lived because they wanted water. This is becoming more and more unacceptable. My question remains, where are the law enforcers and what is the municipality doing about this blatant disregard for the law? Or are they just purposely turning a blind eye, because the elections are coming up?

DISGRUNTLED RESIDENT PAARL

What makes these police officials so special? I have noticed ever since my son has been attending WA Joubert Primary school that there is always a police van parked at the school. I initially thought that it was a safety measure at the school. Recently I saw that the parked police van is dropping a child off in the morning at school and picking him up in the afternoon. Personally I think that this is misuse of an official vehicle. With the sharp increase in petrol, it has been a hassle to get my son to and from school on a daily basis. And since I am a tax-paying citizen and I indirectly contribute to the fuel of the police, I feel that it would be fair if the police then

offer this service to all parents. I suggest that the police officer in question collect my child at home since I am also contributing to the fuel. Since when do police vehicles serve as car pools? Since when may police officers use official vehicles for personal use? I have seen police officers in uniform doing their grocery shopping with an official vehicle and even using officials vehicles as moving trucks, packed with furniture. Some police officers believe that they are above the law; parking on a red line in Lady Grey Street to run across the road to Steers. From

what I have noticed, it is justified to park on a red line when you are getting lunch. Why is it that some people are above the rules of the road? Why is it fine for a police vehicle to speed across a red traffic light with sirens blazing just to switch it of when they reach the other side? What happened to the emergency, I ask. In all fairness, I understand that maybe the police officer at the school has transport issues, but so do I. Who gave him permission to use a vehicle that is there to serve and protect to use as a taxi. And who will be held responsible?

“The last day we spent together, we went to a beautiful wine estate, to bid our friend,

Maricia, farewell as she was departing to the US a few days later. We spent such a memorable day together. She told us about her pregnancy. We were amongst the first people besides her family she broke the news to, and that made me feel so special, that she shared such wonderful yet intimate news at the time, with us. We were ecstatic at the news and I could visualise the discussion we had earlier on in the year taking form...the first baby in our ‘play group’ was well on its way. We reminisced about the good old days...laughed constantly, and I remember staring at her with such admiration, that my friend would soon become a mother, and what an amazing mother she would be!!! Little did we know that Elzette would be the one we bid farewell to on that day,” lui ’n gedeelte uit die huldeblyk. * A Wellington couple is left heartbroken after the sudden death of their eldest daughter.

Italian memorial to be restored A memorial on Du Toitskloof Pass overlooking Paarl which honours the Italian prisoners of war, has been desecrated by vandals. The bronze plaque was erected in 1984 during the Goodwill Festival to commemorated the many Italian prisoners who constructed the pass during the Second World War. After a member of a Facebook page dedicated to the role of South Africans involved both World Wars and the Korean War, Roché Petersen, reported the loss to the group, the idea was born to restore the memorial. The response was overwhelming, with the Italian Consul to Cape Town, Edoardo Maria Vitali, members of the Italian community in South Africa and the Zonderwater Association, named for the internment camp in Pretoria, as well as benefactors as far as Italy expressing their support. The memorial is very important to the military history of South Africa, with specific reference to the Second World War and Paarl in particular. The Du Toitskloof Pass is one of our most splendid mountain passes and just one of many such projects undertaken by the Italians. Others include the Outeniqua Pass

An 18year old boy who matriculat ed from Paarl Boys’ High School last year, was found dead on Tuesday at his Boschenmeer home. Marcello Monteiro was a popular boy amongst all who knew him and was an active sportsman. He was a star of Boishaai’s first hockey team. He is survived by his mother Heilet, father Joe and brother Manuel. No foul play is suspected.

Beware of these scamsters A man from Wellington was shocked after he received a call from someone claiming to be from Absa – a bank he hasn’t done business with in almost two decades. The caller, a man calling himself Bessinger, told him he was calling on behalf of Absa and wanted to know whether he had received his Absa credit card. Since the man has not done business with this bank in about 20 years, he was caught by surprise. He went online and searched the telephone number that appeared on his phone from the caller. The phone number is registered to a company in Brakpan called New World Trace. According to the company’s website they trace debtors, missing persons and companies. Many complaints have been lodged on social networks. A person going by the alias “Too Clever” wrote: “He phoned me saying he is marketing for Absa, but the moment he phoned me I was on to him.” Another person using the alias of “Sucker” wrote: “This number belongs to New World Trace in Brakpan. The guy’s name is Bessinger. According to his website he locates missing persons and debtors. He phoned me this morning pretending to be from Absa. He is misrepresenting himself in order to get personal information.” Heidi wrote: “I got a call from this guy claiming to call from Std bank (Standard Bank) regarding my credit card.” Paarl Post contacted Absa asking them whether Bessinger is an employee or if they are doing business with such a company. Absa denied the relationship, stating: “It is safe to say that the person in question is not mandated to act on Absa’s behalf.” Arrie Rautenbach, head of Retail Banking at Absa said: “Banking fraud across the industry continues to be very prevalent, and the scenario highlighted would appear (to be) another way of obtaining full card and personal details with the aim of committing fraud.” He further said that fraudsters often send out emails or call customers claiming to be from Absa (or other reputable organisations) resulting in individuals giving out confidential information about their accounts. “Although Absa has a number of security measures in place to protect you, your awareness is the key to avoid being a victim of banking fraud,” said Rautenbach. Paarl Post contacted Bessinger. He admitted to being the owner of New World Trace but refused to answer any questions related to the telephone calls that were made impersonating an employee of Absa.

Blinds for every taste and home

Blinds do not only let you control the amount of sunlight that enters your home and give you more privacy, they also add to the ambience and style of your home. It’s imperative to decide on the best window covering solution for your residential or commercial requirements. Here are some of the types available. . Aluminium Venetians These come in a wide variety of colours and are all made from the finest imported Swedish slat with custom trimmings, giving them a stylish finish. . Aluwood Venetians Aluwood Venetians are aluminium slats with a wood print, which gives a wood appearance without the cost. These blinds also come standard with real wood trimmings, giving them a real wood finish. . Bass-wood Venetians This is the ultimate window covering in terms of elegance and style. These Venetians come in a wide variety of colours to match your décor and are made from the finest basswood, which is proven to be the best wood for making Venetian blinds. They are also available in laminated bass wood. . Plass-wood Venetians These are made with PVC that has been

moulded and printed to look like real wood. They are mostly preferred in areas with high humidity, like bathrooms, as they are more suited to moisture than real wood is. However, make sure the company you buy it from can guarantee that their PVC will not warp from UV exposure in the South African climate. . Vertical A wide variety of fabrics is available to choose from – from light filtering to total blockout vertical blinds. These blinds are also available in PVC or aluminium. . Roller blinds An excellent selection of roller blind fabric is available to suit not only your taste, but your budget too. These blinds come with a side control to raise and lower the blind in any position. . Roman blinds These are made with side controls that can stop the blind in any position. They are available in a wide variety of fabrics that have been specifically tested for use as Roman blinds – not all fabrics are suited for this purpose. . Bamboo and woven wood blinds These blinds come standard with cord lock and matching valance. The cord lock will stop the blind in any position, and it’s possible to make your bamboo or woven wood blind work like a roller or Roman blind. They also come in a wide selection of exquisite weaves. . Duette and plissè blinds These are available in total blockout or light-filtering fabrics to suit your application. . Printed blinds Any graphics can be printed on your Venetian or vertical blinds. You can also print different graphics on the front and the back of the blind, giving you the ability to change your graphic by simply tilting the blind in the desired direction. . Double-glazing blinds Twenty-five-millimetre aluminium Venetians can be made to fit between the glass of your double-glazed windows or doors. . Solar film roller blind These are made from solar film in a variety of shades and colours. Lift it up in winter to warm a room or put it down in summer to cool the room.

Insulating your home only has benefits Once you get to the matter of heating and insulation in building your house, keep in mind a fundamental law of physics: hot air will always attempt to move towards cold air to reach an equilibrium. If you do not have insulation material on your ceiling, there is nothing stopping hot air from moving into the house via the ceiling boards. This will cause the temperature inside to rise. In winter the exact opposite happens – the warmer air generated by a heat source will rise and escape through the ceiling into the roof. To stop this flow, insulation is needed to keep the hot air where it belongs. Every home or office needs to save energy. It’s not just a buzz word any more – it’s now a necessity. We have to take part in the drive to use less power for cooling and heating. Insulation is the starting point for any cost-saving exercise. Things like solar power and heating are also very important, but most energy is used to make a space more comfortable. The perfect solution to insulate your space is by installing cellulose insulation. It is 100% environmentally friendly in both its composition and the manufacturing process. Cellulose insulation is manufactured us-

Harmless chemicals are used to make it resistant to fire, rodents, insects and mould. Cellulose insulation is cheaper per square metre than other insulation materials, and offers more benefits.

What’s important is that insulation has now become a matter of legislation. Since 1 July, all new houses approved for construction require insulation. Cellulose insulation is approved by the government, provided it receives the SABS stamp.

Jou plante benodig gereeld water.

Don’t let a water leakage ruin you home Few homeowners know much about plumbing on their property until it’s too late. Their level of interaction generally ends with the selection of taps, showerheads, baths, basins, sinks and toilets. Understanding some basics about plumbing, however, can save you time and money. Most suburban properties receive water from a municipal connection, where a meter and – importantly – the general stop-tap are located. Every house is required to have one. If there’s an accident, like a pipe burst,

this tap is where you’ll cut off the main supply. Cold water is supplied under pressure, and some of it flows to the geyser to be heated. Make sure the geyser operates at the right temperature – between 50° and 60 °C for optimum savings on your rates bill. Different forms of drainage systems ensure waste-water is removed, while some “green” systems can route waste-water for garden irrigation. Keep a lookout for dripping taps – thousands of litres can be wasted this way, adding to a significant portion of your water costs if left unchecked.

Most leaking taps can be easily and cheaply repaired with basic tools, but modern mixers and thermostatic taps generally require more sophisticated and sometimes costly expertise. It’s worth keeping this in mind when you’re shopping for bathroomware. When you need a plumber, it’s a good idea to get references. Services and skill levels vary vastly in this industry. Some plumbers even have hi-tech devices able to identify leaking pipes underground or in walls without having to open them up, which can greatly reduce the amount of work required.

Under lock and key Having built or renovated your home into the dream home you’ve always wanted is quite an accomplishment in itself. But now comes step two: getting the appropriate security measures in place to protect your home, your belongings and your family. Take note of the following safety tips: • Ensure your house number is clearly visible. • If your vehicle is parked outside, consider fitting a gorilla lock to the steering wheel. • Do not be seen to be placing valuables in your boot or hatch back and then leaving your vehicle. • Ensure the area around your residential buildings is well lit. • Ensure your pavement is clear of “hiding places”. • Be observant when approaching your home, especially of suspicious-looking characters. • Don’t leave extra house or car keys under your doormat, potted plants or any other obvious outdoor places.

• Be aware when driving home at night. If you suspect someone is following you, do not drive straight home. Rather drive around the block first to get rid of them, otherwise drive straight to the police station. • Dogs are great companions and a wonderful sense of security. However, they can’t always help you in difficult situations. • Do not leave valuables visible in your car, even if it is only an empty bag. • Always take your radio face out of your car at night. • It is wise to not have your key hanger/bowl close to a door or window. It is also advisable to invest in other security options such as burglar bars, trelly/security door, electric fencing, etc. Some homeowners also prefer having an alarm system or an armed response security company as the ultimate security method. Where your possessions and your loved ones are concerned it is better to be safe rather than sorry!

FOTO: JOHAN NEL

Spur school mountainbike league in line for award The Spur School Mountain Bike League cemented its position as one of the leading sport development programmes in the country when it was shortlisted as a finalist for the 2014 Discovery Sport Industry Awards. Launched in 2009 as a joint initiative between Spur and Amarider, the league has shown a 45% year-onyear growth and has exceeded all initial projections in terms of numbers and reach. The league has grown explosively and has expanded from 900 entries and 20 events in 2009 to 7 506 entrants taking part in 52 events hosted in nine South African provinces as well as neighbouring countries Zimbabwe, Namibia and Lesotho. League coordinator Meurant Botha of Amarider attributes the amazing growth of the league to the hands-on involvement of Spur Steak Ranches as well as the efforts of a team of dedicated regional organisers and school coordinators. He adds that one of the key objec-

tives of the league is to leave a legacy for participants. “We are really happy with the steady growth of the league in terms of participants, more regional events and new tracks being developed in collaboration with schools and municipalities. The figures for 2013 have shot up to more than 7 000 entries. The level of competition has also improved significantly since the launch of the league five years ago,” says Botha. The Spur School Mountain Bike League final is also considered an interprovincial derby with the top cycling teams from across South Africa vying for the coveted interprovincial floating trophy. According to Spur market development manager Andrew Cronje, the group is delighted to be a part of grassroots mountain-biking development at school level. “We are really proud to be associated with the league as it not only provides a platform for schools to compete in a structured way, but is also playing a key role in growing mountain-bik-

ing as a sport discipline,” said Cronje. “We would love to see mountainbiking acknowledged as an official school sport. Being nominated for the official shortlist of the most respected and prestigious sport industry event in Africa will most certainly support this endeavour,” concludes Cronje. The Dreamfields Project walked away with the coveted title in the Sport Development Programme of the Year category of the Discovery Sport Industry Awards, while other nominees included the Powerade Performance Sessions with John Mitchell, NBA Royal Bafokeng Jr. Programme, SARU – Vodacom Cup 2013 “Tjovitjo” and SuperSport Let’s Play. The 2014 Spur School Mountain Bike league starts in March and will culminate with the final at Bekker School in October. Tour de Boland starts Multiple-time mountain bike world champion and four-time Absa Cape Epic winner Christoph Sauser will lead a powerhouse invitational team at the Bestmed Tour de Boland, presented by ASG, early next week. The four-day road tour, which starts in Franschhoek on 4 March, will pit Sauser’s stellar line-up of mountain bikers against the cream of South African roadies as they take on the gruelling 432 km challenge. The Meerendal-Songo.info team will include Sauser’s new Cape Epic partner Frantisek Rabon, as well as local pros Erik Kleinhans, Lourens Luus, Nico Bell and Oliver Munnik. They will face off against pro teams like Abantu, Bonitas and the local MTN-Qhubeka outfit, which includes last year’s champion Nic Dougall. “I’m glad there will be good competition. It will make the race interesting and it lifts our game too,” said Sauser. All eyes will be on the three-time

Czech time-trial champion Rabon during the 21 km stage from the Berg River Dam to the top of Helshoogte Pass. Sauser said Rabon, who rode for Omega Pharma-Quick Step last season, would provide invaluable guidance on the three road stages between Stellenbosch, Tulbagh and Riebeeck-Kasteel. The last of the climbs ends with a dramatic mountain-top finish on the spectacular Franschhoek Pass. As one of only two road races he will do this season, Sauser said he was looking forward to the Western Cape tour. “For me it’s free hard speed-training with lots of added excitement.” The former Olympic bronze medallist said road work formed an important part of his preparations for international commitments like the Cape Epic. Aside from the pros, this year’s Bestmed Tour de Boland will also feature amateurs across various gender and age categories For more information, find the race on Facebook or follow them on Twitter @TourdeBoland.
