Inwoners ontstoke oor dwelms Lise Beyers

Dit was die duidelike boodskap wat Dinsdag deur inwoners van Lanquedoc in Groot Drakenstein uitgestuur is, nadat hulle die huis van ’n vermeende moordenaar en dwelmsmous afgebrand het. Die lont in die kruitvat het Saterdag ontbrand, toe ’n polisiebeampte wat woonagtig is in dié gebied, ondersoek ingestel het nadat hy inligting ontvang het oor ’n moord. Groot Drakenstein se polisiewoordvoerder, kst Rionel Uithaler, het gesê dat die beampte deur ’n inwoner van Lanquedoc ingelig is dat hy vroeg dié oggend ’n man gesien het wat ’n kruiwa gestoot het waarin die liggaam van ’n vrou was. Die polisieman het ondersoek ingestel en op die bebloede, halfnaakte liggaam van Nothemba Giladile (28) in ’n beboste gebied afgekom. Sy is erg aangerand en het gesterf weens ’n harde hou teen die kop. Versterkings is ingeroep en die huis waar die vrou gewoon het, is deursoek. Hier het die polisie op bloedbesmeerde mure afgekom.

Volgens Kleinschmidt het Ntlomelwana arrogant en uittartend in die beskuldigdebank opgetree. Die saak is uitgestel tot 3 Mei. Maar kort ná Ntlomelwana se hofverskyning was sy huis in ligte laaie. “Ons het skaars teruggekom in Lanquedoc, toe sien ek rook vanuit Ntlomelwana se woning borrel,” het Kleinschmidt gesê. Niemand is tot dusver in verband met die brand in hegtenis geneem nie. “Die polisie doen ’n beroep op die gemeenskap en kerkleiers om vrede te bewaar en om nie die wet in eie hande te neem nie,” het Uithaler gesê. Hoorsê | Hearsay VOTERS may be forgiven if they have their doubts about the quality of some of the candidates in the local election on 18 May. Among the candidates is former ANC councillor Dan Kotze, who is once again standing for election to a council seat in the upcoming municipal elections - despite being recently convicted of serious assault. This time he is standing for SA Progressive Civics Party, but even if he wins a seat, he will have to give it up if he is sentenced to serve a prison term. One wonders how many voters will be prepared to support such a candidate. Some might say his candidacy makes a mockery of politics in general. Besoedeling gevrees ná vragmotor teen berg rol Lise Beyers BOERE van Klein Drakenstein is steeds ontstoke nadat ’n vragmotor veroorsaak het dat ’n bergspruit besoedel is. Dit kom nadat ’n vragmotor wat verf-chemikalieë vervoer het, Dinsdagaand by Dutoitskloof afgestort het. Die voorval het omstreeks 18:30 plaasgevind toe die bestuurder van die vragmotor wat in die rigting van die Paarl gery het, beheer oor sy voertuig verloor het, op ’n skerp draai. Die vragmotor het sowat 20 meter ver van die pad afgetuimel en onderstebo in die Miaspoortspruit buite die Paarl beland. Die bestuurder van die vragmotor het verskeie beenbreuke opgedoen, maar sy drie passasiers het ongeskonde uit die wrak geklim.

Saam met hom staan ander voormalige politici soos Cupido Dan Kotze Rogers, Van der Berg Pienaar, en Titus Hendricks ook as kandidate vir Sapco. Kotze, voorheen ANC-raadslid, is reeds in Oktober verlede jaar skuldig bevind op twee aanklagte van aanranding met die opset om ernstig te beseer. TWELVE armed men went on the rampage on a MetroRail train in Paarl on Sunday afternoon. According to Mbekweni police the men entered a carriage of the train between Dal Josaphat and Mbekweni stations, holding various passengers hostage. They produced knives and firearms and forced passengers to hand over their valuables. At Mbekweni station the men disembarked and vanished. Only one of the victims laid a charge of robbery at Mbekweni police station, so it is unclear how many people were robbed. Nobody was injured in the incident. MetroRail was unable to comment on the incident at the time of going to press.

Man arrested for wife’s murder A MAN from Franschhoek has been arrested for his wife’s murder. Annelize Arendse (32) was found dead last week on Montagne Farm. She had been struck on the head with a metal pipe. According to the spokesperson for Franschhoek police, Cst Marize Papier, Arendse had spent the evening with her cousin, after a row with her husband, Abie Arendse. When Abie came looking for his wife, an argument again ensued, during which she was allegedly struck on the head with a metal pipe. Abie was arrested on a charge of murder.

Can we afford these holidays?

FOR many this extended week of public holidays has been a glorious break. But the negative impact of these holidays outweigh the advantages. Firstly, the schools had barely opened for the second term after their autumn break, when this second “holiday” deprived students of seven whole days which should have been spent in classrooms. Although some schools have already worked in this lost time, many have blatantly taken these days off without worrying when they will catch up on their work. Will the powers that be then again at the end of the year adjust exam results, as was done with last year’s matric results? Then the excuses used for poor results were strikes and the extended World Cup holiday which had deprived children of school time. We must also not forget the huge economic impact these holidays have on businesses. The financial loss runs into millions of rands for some. In short, these holidays are counter productive for a society in a recession which can least afford time out.

Hoe gemaak met onse Munisipaliteit?

Ek wonder maar net... SIENDE dat ek nie behoort te dink nie, mag ek seker wonder oor ’n fenomeen of twee? Volgens die betekenis van ‘dink’ en ‘wonder’ beweeg ek alweer op verstandelike dun ys. Ek wonder tog of die feit dat ek, alhoewel moeitevol, bank- en e-posgeriewe sélf kon baasraak op my selfoon en kan kommunikeer met my skoondogter se katte, moontlik daarop dui dat ek nie ressorteer onder “die heilige klip”, soos my onderwyseres-skoonma met moedelose hartseer verwys het na ’n minder skerp leerling. Hoekom wonder ek skielik of pres. Zuma ooit daaraan dink dat genl. Smuts en mnre. De Klerk en Mbeki se veelvuldige buitelandse besoeke moontlik hulle politieke status binnelands geknou het? Ek mag seker nie wonder of sommige leiers meer klip en minder heilig is nie en dus nie besef wat die essensie van diens aan ’n volk se kieserskorps behels nie. Ek wonder altyd hoedat dit moontlik is dat leiers die regte kleredrag, protokol e.a.dinge navolg, maar nie die goeie voorbeeld van groot leiers uit die geskiedenis nie? Ek wonder steeds hoekom sommige vroue ten alle koste wil meeding op tradisioneel manlike terrein? Daar is niks inspirerend of betowerend manlik aan vroulike sokker- en rugbyspelers nie en minder as niks verleidelik-vroulik. Net soos daar werklik geen aura van smeulende vroulikheid is aan machomanne wat deesdae vrouemodes op internasionale loopplanke vertoon nie. Die afgelope tyd wonder ek nog meer wie die meester en/of weesheer is. Is dit ’n hy of sy, hoe kontak ’n mens die “mitiese” figuur? Hy/sy/hulle is soos Moekie en Evelina van 7de Laan; mens hoor net van hulle, maar sien hulle nooit. Ek wonder of, soos genoemdes, die meester/weesheer nie net spookfigure is nie. Selfs my prokureur, hy is baie slim, kry nie reaksie van dié noodsaaklike skakel in boedelbereddering nie. Ek wonder of “dit” nie nog ’n politieke opportunis is nie...

Ek wonder of ons nie liefs moet mooi drome droom oor die toekoms van ons land nie; drome word baie dikwels waar, terwyl wonder, net wonder bly. Watch out for cash register theft PLEASE do yourself a favour and check your grocery shopping against your till-slip. I bought around R600 worth of groceries at a big supermarket and when I checked, I found that the cashier bought herself R30 worth of airtime on my account. Some of the groceries were also priced wrong on the shelf, and I ended up paying R5 more for three of the items. To my relief, the manager of the shop did not object to paying me back the money. Paarl Tourism not responsible for tourism woes

Hoekom word lesings geskat?

I would like to comment on Lise Beyers’ excellent article in Paarl Post, on 31 March, about Paarl tourism woes. I have been in the travel business for many years. After retiring to Paarl, I served five years on Paarl Tourism’s Exco. Paarl is clearly not a tourist friendly town. The attitude towards cyclists during a recent event that overnightedinPaarlisapointincase. Cycling in the Cape is huge business - netting millions of rands, but Paarl was not able to show a welcoming face, partly because the Municipality did not advertise the event. Immediately one questions their ability to promote tourism effectively. Until citizens, businesses and Drakenstein Municipality get together with one purpose in mind, we will forever be ‘standing at the back of the queue’. Secondly, Paarl Tourism bent over backwards to encourage homestay and other Paarl East and Mbekweni tourist services to join Paarl Tourism. We drastically reduced annual subscriptionsandwaivedentryfeestoattract these services. We did have some success with about four or five services joining us. It was explained to all who joined Paarl Tourism that we promoted the whole of Paarl as a tourist destination. We did not promote any one member’s service be it a B&B, homestay or transport company. Unfortunately, there were those who, when joining, expected us to recommend their service above their competitors. This we could not do and went to lengths to explain that

The main stumbling block seemed to be the fact that Drakenstein Municipality had a problem with Paarl Tourism because the latter did not in the Municipality’s eyes, promote ALL the tourist services in Paarl irrespective of whether they were members of Paarl Tourism or not. This attitude prevailed despite our determined efforts to recruit and assist other groups. At one time, the information desk would not hand out Paarl Tourism’s brochure because our brochure did not contain all of the tourism services in all of Paarl despite the fact that anyone could advertise in our brochure. How crazy is that? It is vital that tourists feel welcome the moment they enter Paarl. Is there anywhere a big outdoor street map of Paarl? There should be one at all major entrances. Ward 15 wanted to spend their budgeted allocation on such a map

in Main Street near the off-ramp from the N1, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. The Municipality did not sanction it. It is essential that the Municipality co-operates fully with Paarl Tourism who are the representatives of the private sector in the tourist industry. Paarl and Wellington Tourism MUSTbeconsultedandallowedtogive input into determining tourism policies and budgets affecting their towns. In the years I served Paarl Tourism, I have yet to see any policy document detailing tourism policies or how the Municipality aims to promote tourism in Paarl let alone the rest of Drakenstein. Paarl Tourism does not have the money from members’ fees alone to do more than they already do. Government has money to assist in tourism promotion and development, but this can only be accessed through the Municipality. In discussion with a senior member of the municipal department responsible for tourism, I was asked in all seriousness what Paarl Tourism does for Paarl that the Municipality can’t do. When I asked what policy the Municipality had in place to promote and develop tourism, I was met with a blank stare. Despite all I said, it was obvious to me that the Municipality wanted Paarl Tourism out of the way and that is not the way to go!

By die Toerisme Inligtingskantoor op Wellington gaan kry ek ’n permit vir ’n staproete in Bainskloof. Vroeër was ’n vriendelike Afrikaanssprekende personeellid (bruin) baie effektief behulpsaam en het meer moeite gedoen as wat nodig is. Toe ek weer eendag daar kom,

Die Toerisme Inligtingskantoor is mos elke gemeenskap se vertoonvenster en behoort die dorp, besighede en gemeenskap so baie goed te ken en met geesdrif diens te lewer – dit was nie my beste ervaring nie. My nuutste ervaring was met kieserregistrasie. By die lokaal waar ons moes gaan registreer, was alle aanwysings Engels en vorms was net in Xhosa en Engels beskikbaar. SWEMMERS. Swemmers Mila van Huyssteen, Margeaux van der Merwe en Ethan Fredericks van Courtrai Laerskool het uitstekend presteer by die Telkom SA vlak 1-streekkampioenskappe in Oos-Londen. Mila het een goud, vier silwer en twee brons medaljes weggeraap, terwyl Margeaux twee goud, twee silwer en een brons medalje verower het. Ethan het een silwer medalje ingepalm.

SWIMMER. At the recent 4M girls’ interschools swimming gala held in Stellenbosch, Bernitia Hess of La Rochelle High came second in the girls 15-16 individual medley and butterfly (50m), and first in breaststroke (50m). She was also selected for the Level 3 age group swimming championships in Durban.

vSWEM. Darren Minnies (links), William Kruger en Alexander Kruger met Pierre Pretorius (agter) van Primêre Seunskool is puik swemmers. Pierre Pretorius en Darren Minnies het aan die “Level 2” swemkompetisie te Nuweland deelgeneem. Hulle het albei baie goed gevaar en Pierre het ’n goue medalje gekry in die 50m rugslag, silwer in die 50m vlinderslag en 2 brons medaljes in die 100m vryslag en die 50m vryslag. Pierre het ook sy persoonlike beste tye verbeter tydens die byeenkoms. William en Alexander Kruger het in Oos-Londen aan die “Level 1” swemkompetisie deelgeneem.

Gemeenskapsentrum open dié naweek Devidean Moses

KE MOJA. Six schools in Paarl and Wellington completed the Ke Moja programme which informs learners about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse and introduces them to alternative lifestyles. The programme was run in partnership with Koinonia and the Department of Social Welfare. Koinonia thanks all its partners who made the success possible. Sisipho Fololo (Wellington High), Gabrielle van Turha (Hillcrest Primary), Shanique Julies (New Orleans Primary) and Zinzi Hlutyana (Noorder Paarl High) represented their schools. Paarlzicht Primary and Weltevrede Secondary was also part of the programme. Strong support for tax on copper scrap STRONG support for a 40 percent tax on copper scrap leaving the country was expressed at the copper summit organised by the Cape Chamber of Commerce. Michael Bagraim, President of the Chamber, said the effect of the tax would be that more scrap copper would be available to South African manufacturing industries at lower prices and that this would lead to more jobs in factories. There was unanimous support for the urgent implementation of the Second Hand Goods Act which had been approved by Parliament in 2009, but had not yet been gazetted because the regulations required by the Act had not been drafted. When the Act is implemented it will become easier to clamp down on dealers who sell stolen property. Top 100 Wines of South Africa selected AT the inaugural Top 100 SA Wine Challenge, South Africa’s top wines were selected by a panel of renowned international and South African judges. Five of the nine judges were Masters of Wine of whom there are less than 300 in the world. THE Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, has upheld the appeal of the developers after the director of integrated environmental management refused authorisation for the proposed Klapmuts Hills Residential Estate. The development, which is to comprise of about 1500 houses in an upmarket security complex of 73 hectares to the west of Klapmuts, now has permission to go ahead within the next five years. The development proposal was originally refused on the grounds that its peripheral location was not ideal and because the proposed development’s water demand cannot be met within the existing reservoir capacity for Klapmuts. It will require the construction of a second reservoir adjacent to the existing reservoir at Klapmutskop. ) A public participation process has

Council helps needy local schools THE Executive Mayor of Drakenstein, Charmaine Manuel, recently handed over an amount of R500 000 in cheques to needy schools in Drakenstein. This money was made available even though schools are not a primary function of local government and this decision was made against the backdrop of the many requests received from schools for support. The schools’ principals undertook to honor the commitment they have signed to

use the funds for the purposes as stipulated in the memorandum of agreement. Said Manuel: “We as council have invested in young people from poor communities to allow them te equip themselves with the necessary skills to be successful in life. Even though the Provincial Education department providces funding to schools, it is simply not sufficient to address all the needs. This is further complicated by poverty and the high rate of unemployment.

More trophies for Vineyards ads 28 April

THE Vineyards Rugby Club is on the roll. After this weekend’s Fish King 10-a-Side tournament, that was hosted by Young Standards at the Faure Street Stadium, they now have ten trophies in their cabinet for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. After Saturday’s 10’s victory over Young Peoples, Violets and Franschhoek United, Vineyards Rugby Club can arguably claim to be the best club in the Paarl area. Paarl, who are playing in the Premier A league, were knocked out early by Young Standards with a try in the last minute. They then went down to Franschhoek by 25 points in the semi-final. On current form, both with the number of players and on field results, Vineyards is doing something right. Both Young Peoples (Super B) and Franschhoek (Premier B) were victims to the elusive running style and strength of the Vineyards players on Saturday. At times it seems that the Vineyard’s team was playing with 15 men as opposed to 10. Vineyards beat Young People 24-10, Violets 44-5 and Franschhoek United 27-5 taking their trophy count to ten in the display cabinet. They are now the trophy holders of the Gardens Sevens and the Fish King 10-a-Side tournaments. In2010theywerethePaarlregionleagueandknockout champions and then to top it all, the u.20 plate final winners at last Saturday’s 10-a-side tournament and the u.16’s league trophy winners for 2010. Added to the six trophies are the four trophies for Vineyards players who were named players with the most tries and points accolades in these competitions. All indications are that Vineyards, with a points difference of 200 after 3 wins in the league this year already, are on their way to defend their league title successfully in 2011.
