* A jewellery store in Church Street, Wellington, was robbed on Monday morning..

Vakansiedae, reg of weg? Laat mens wonder.

Icy weekend ahead TODAY we may have some refuge from the rain, but be prepared - the next few days it will be raining cats and dogs. It will be sunny at 16°C today, but tomorrow torrents of rain return. Saturday brings more rain and an icy 13°C while Sunday will start to clear at 16°C. Isolated showers will however still be possible until Monday morning.

Police corner armed robbers Lise Beyers DETERMINED police officers from Groot Drakenstein apprehended three armed robbers last week, in real ‘cops and robbers’ style. The incident occurred after an armed robbery at a farm in Banhoek near the Helshoogte Road. Here five armed men held a man and woman hostage in their homestead for two hours on Tuesday evening, before escaping with numerous valuables. According to Groot Drakenstein police spokesperson, Const Rionel Uithaler, once the hostages were released, the man called the police. A high alert was sent out for patrol vehicles in and around the area to be on the look-out for suspects. The help of the Boland K-9 unit was also called in. Earlier the evening, members of Groot Drakenstein police had spotted a suspicious vehicle, but, said Uithaler, only one person was in the vehicle and when stopped and searched there was no need to apprehend the occupant. But when news of the armed robbery was sent out on air, the officers realised that the vehicle in which the suspects had fled, matched the description of the vehicle they had stopped earlier that evening.

The vehicle was again spotted near Boschendal and when members of the dog unit stopped the vehicle, three men jumped out and disappeared into the vineyards. Another suspect however did not manage to flee. Early the following morning, detectives were still trying to track down the fugitives. They then noticed three suspicious looking men near the four-way-stop in Klapmuts. The men were soaking wet and were trying to hitch-hike. When the unmarked police vehicle stopped, the three suspects fled into an open field. One suspect was quickly apprehended while another disappeared. A third suspect continued running while a detective gave chase. This chase continued for approximately 4 km, through farm land and even a dam, before the suspect was eventually apprehended with the help of passing ADT security guards. Three suspects are still at large while three suspects appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court in connection with the incident. They are Siya Silombo (22), Ndivike Manga (38) and Simion Shalong (23) of Cape Town. Anyone with information regarding the incident can contact Const Fabian van Riet at 021 874 8000.

Amado gallops to new heights Lise Beyers

LOCAL lass, M’Lani Basson (32), has been listed as one of 200 inspiring young South Africans. VERSIGTIG.

This comes after the influential newspaperMail&Guardian’sannual list of the country’s top 200 young South Africans was recently revealed. Annually this newspaper compiles a list of the leaders of tomorrow, as well as in many cases, today. These outstanding young individuals (35 years old and under) from all walks of life, excel in their various arenas, such as sports, politics and arts. M’Lani was included in this elite list of young people for the outstanding work which she does amongst disabled, underprivileged children in and around Paarl through horseassisted therapy. This is a unique form of therapy where interaction with horses is used to enhance the quality and productivity of the lives of persons with mental, physical, and psychological disabilities. M’Lani has already become wellknown in Paarl for this unique form of therapy which has changed many children’s lives. She has on various occasions been honoured for her selfless work, receiving a mayoral award in appreciation of service rendered in the Social Services Field, a Jet Community Award in recognition of dedication and commitment and a Rotary merit award for services rendered to humankind. Having majored in psychology and art in 2003, she wanted to specialise in art therapy, but did not have R25 000 for the course. Having been an avid horse rider since the age of three, M’Lani stumbled upon equine-assisted therapy ten years ago. She surfed the internet and hopped onto a plane to Edinburgh in Scotland where she started working as a volunteer at an equine assisted therapy centre outside the city.

THERAPY. Trevor Manuel (Minister in the Presidency for the National Planning Commission) showed a keen interest in M’Lani Basson’s horse-assisted therapy centre, Amado, at a recent function in Johannesburg, where M’Lani was listed as one of 200 inspiring young South Africans. Her income came from the farm next door, where she had to clean twenty stables a day and was responsibleforcheckingaherdofcows every two hours during the night for signs of labour. This apprenticeship schooled her for the future. Today she saves on veterinary bills by inoculating her horses herself, cleaning and trimming hooves and teeth. Amado was then eventually born in 2006. Today M’Lani offers horse-assisted therapy to 60 children of the Ligstraal School for the disabled in Amstelhof. Groups of children are daily transported by M’Lani to her stables on the slopes of Paarl Mountain where they participate in all kinds of activities related to horses. “I am not one of those ‘horsey’ people who are only interested in the animals because of the image they sometimes represent. I see the potential of horses and what they can offer the children. “In nature, horses are flight animals, buttheyalsohaveanimmense sensitivity and can sense who is on their back. “It is awe-inspiring to see a horse suchasoldJoseph, wholovestorun, become meek as a lamb once a disabled child mounts the saddle. “All my horses are incredible with

the children. If they seem to be sliding off the saddle, the horses will move with the falling child to stabilise it.” M’Lani has truly had inspiring results from her therapy. Children who have their entire life been bound to a wheel chair and for whom doctors had no hope, now run around her stables and saddle up horses. She also has to deal with children who have been sexually abused and after only a few encounters with horses, these children whose lives have been devastated, get a new lease on life, becoming responsive, laughing out loud and enjoying themselves. But being a non-profit organisation remains an uphill battle. It is a constant worry where next month’s funding will come from. “We do apply for a government grant, but this takes many months before, and if, it materialises. We thus rely on contributions from the public and the support of our fundraising events. The public can also become involved with Amado by registering us on a My School card at Woolworths.” M’Lani can be contacted at 083 604 4037 or visit her website, www. amado.co.za, to read more about the magical work which is done at Amado.

BOEK.

Vroeër in Junie is daar weer by die werkswinkel ingebreek.

WENNER.

* Three Paarl police officers have been found guilty of fraud after they were caught stealing illegal cigarettes confiscated from informal traders.

VERWOES.

Too many public holidays?

THE question of public holidays has arisen again. For many it is a welcome break, while for others it is a cumbersome disruption of what should be profitable work-time. And according to economic charts, the negative impact of these holidays outweigh the advantages. Firstly, schooling is often disrupted, with an extra school holiday given if the public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday. It is a known fact that many of our schools are far behind in their curriculum. Not to mention the Mondays that get latched onto public holidays which fall on a Sunday. Then we must not forget the huge economic impact these holidays have on businesses. The financial loss runs into millions of rands for some. And on top of it all, South Africa has more public holidays than most countries. In short, these holidays are counter-productive for a society in a recession which can least afford time out. And does the broad public actually respect and celebrate holidays such as Youth Day, Women’s Day and Workers’ Day? Now Christian religious holidays are also under the spotlight. According to statistics, the majority of South Africans are Christians. If religious holidays are added on for other religious groups, it will be a severe blow to the economy. So maybe it is time for Christians to do the right thing, and give up some of their holidays for the good of the country. Surely one can celebrate Easter without having the Monday off?

Bring on ‘sop mammies’ MY heart is full of mixed feelings, one of gratitude and the other of deep disappointment, if not loss. I have laboured in this vineyard (the Western Cape) for some 50 years and come to regard the whole community of Paarl, with one or two notable exceptions, as a very personal blessing. We have some of the finest and most talented people in the world. We not only belong to one another, but also have an obligation together to make this town and others like it work for our children and grandchildren. It could become a model urban society with less rancour and more appreciation for the good things that we have in common and less recrimination about a past we can no longer change. My wife, however, has reminded me that I do a lot of grumbling these days – “everything is always wrong” – and I must confess that the answer would be to turn off the news. Then, when everything looks bleak, I get a nice letter from the Municipality, from Ester Kearns’ office where she is our Ombudsman. I wrote to her about a problem “my man Fridays and Tuesdays” is having at Fairyland and was rewarded with a positive result. It has made Mr Magele Fezile Frank’s life in his desperate surroundings, so much happier. What has made me much sadder, however, is that a well-dressed man walked through the back door the other morning while my wife was busy with breakfast and feeding the dog. She thought he was from the Municipality, but challenged him when she found him in the passage. He just brushed past her, however, and disappeared into the rain. In the meantime, he had looked in at my bedroom. There, he snatched my wallet and cellphone

from right next to my bed. Fortunately, I was not sleeping in it at the time, but momentarily fetching in the Paarl Post from the verandah. The mercy is no one was hurt, but we expect more respect for old age, if not illness, from able-bodied youngsters who could be doing a useful days’ work, building a future for themselves and their children. It is no joke having to renew credit cards and driving licences, but the real disappointment is the destruction of one’s confidence in the community and the future. Now, I hear that some folk posing as “indigent” or “starving” are begging for money or bread from customers right inside the supermarkets. Little old ladies inclined to dig in their purses for the necessary might find they are donating more than just alms for “the poor”! That also applies to those who waylay heavily laden older women on the way from the shop to their vehicles. Could we not jointly find some way of promoting soup kitchens to feed the starving, or just persuade the trade unions to allow our young folk to start doing community work somewhere, even voluntarily or for a menial wage? Lying around the streets and living off easy pickings is no investment for their own lives or our future. “Sop Mammies” could be put in charge of every block, to advise and assist their neighbours and liaise with donors and the Municipality. I believe that if the community wants to heal itself, it must start right there in its own homes, churches and schools. Self-help is the best kind of help, but that does not include people who are caught helping themselves. P.S. I take my hat off to our local police for their friendly and prompt assistance.

“PRIDE only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice”. Proverbs 13:10

Health risk I WOULD like to respond to the sms in Paarl Post concerning people urinating on the wall at the taxi rank in Breda Street. This wall actually belongs to the Herberg Hotel of which I am the caretaker. My customers in the rooms at the back of the hotel are unable to open their windows because of the stench. I returned to the hotel last Sunday and saw a woman lifting her dress and urinating next to our bar entrance. We clean this area regularly with disinfectant and I think is is high time something is done. I won’t start on the trucks that double park most times behind Shoprite. And phoning the authorities does not help. Jerry Kemp

nele krag.

Conrad Poole Onderburgemeester Drakenstein

Is asking for help like begging? EVEN in a house where the elderly pension drawing men and women have found refuge, there is a great economic divide (see letter regarding Huis Lizelle in Paarl Post of 21 June). The saying “living below the railway line” has never been more apt. The haughty few who may have access to funds from friends, family and widows pensions seem to think that they are elevated to a higher status. Caterers and companies often have a lot of left over food after their functions. They have in the past dropped those off at Huis Lizelle, knowing that there is a need in this house. I have never known any of those “superior” persons refusing the food or suggesting that it be taken to a shelter for the needy. Thankfully the Lions organisation has given us boxes filled with grocery staples, washing powder etc. at Christmas time.

Have these people donated their boxes to those less fortunate than themselves? Yes, we can all admit that our rent is very reasonable, and from what I understand it was the idea of Mr Tienie Malan to provide affordable accommodation for the elderly. Yes it’s true living has become very expensive. In a town full of students there is constantly a shortage of houses to rent which enables home owners and estate agents to send the rent sky high. Simply a question of supply and demand, it is business, but to max out the rent of the less fortunate, is inhumane. For the ten more fortunate of us, there are 20 other people who may land up on the street. Begging is not on the cards for these people, they are proud. Since when has asking for help become begging? Geen fondse vir herstel van grondpaaie

Reward for lost keys

I AM looking for the keys that I lost at Paarl Mall on Saturday 9 June. Please contact me on 083 458 3919 or 083 251 2177. I am offering a reward.

Rowena Kellies (skakelbeampte), Kaapse Wynland Distriksraad)

Chippa’s - just the place to let your hair down Lise Beyers WE have all heard of the ever popular Gugulethu hotspot, Mzoli’s Restaurant, but hidden on our doorstep, within Mbekweni, lies just as vibrant a rural restaurant, Chippa’s Place. And at the helm of this restaurant is local entrepreneur, Chippa Mlata. Here in Mbekweni he has managed to create a popular hang-out for locals where safety and security is the name of the game. Mlata, born and bred in Mbekweni, first set out in the 1990’s establishing cellphone outlets out of containers. He then saw the potential of a restaurant in Mbekweni, to offer the community a safe and friendly environment in which to enjoy themselves. So on 1 December 2007, Chippa’s Place opened its door just off Maqhina Street. Like most businesses, it started off humbly with a small butchery and eating section. Chippa’s popularity soon grew and Mlata realised that his business had space for

Winter-wise electricity

Body found

Advertorial

Your cut-out-‘n-keep road map to smart energy savings when it’s cold outside.

THE body of a man was discovered on Franschhoek Pass on Monday afternoon by a unsuspecting tourist who had parked to admire the view. The man presumably died after being shot in the back with a shot gun. He is presumably in his mid thirties and was wearing a blue track-suit pants, a ‘Nampak’ fleece top and Ultra Tek training shoes. A police spokesperson, Const Marize Papier, said that the body was presumably dumped on the mountain. The community is asked to contact Franschhoek police with any information as regards to the incident. Sgt Lood Muller can be phoned at 021 876 8060 or 072 059 2024.

We can feel it in the air – the first little nip telling us that winter is around the corner. But getting ready for winter doesn’t have to mean heating up your electricity bill. Be winter-wise during these tough economic times with this step-by-step guide on how to become electricity smart and save. Let’s start our trip and travel question to question, answer by answer .…

Why do I find winter energy costs expensive?

Sharing a lift

The cold months bring a surge in household energy costs – an increase of up to 15%: • You begin to switch on space heaters • Your house might not be insulated - heat escapes through the ceiling and through gaps in windows and doors • You take extended baths • You cook for longer periods to prepare stews and other “soul-warming” favourites • You run additional appliances such as tumble dryers to dry clothes.

What can I do to save electricity today?

Immediate steps: •

WITH petrol prices at a premium and road congestion increasing almost on a daily basis, commuters have become very frustrated. But a new website has just been launched to assist all South African commuters, while reducing their carbon-footprint. Liftshare is a free-to-join, mission-driven social enterprise, which seeks to make a difference in the way South Africans travel and interact with each other. Liftshare’s main aim is to help people to travel more sustainably by sharing their car journey. Via their online network, they match people with similar journeys, enabling them to save money, make the world a better place, and have fun whilst doing it. Liftshare South Africa is affiliated with Liftshare.com, the world’s largest liftsharing network. They are therefore able to rely on a tried and tested system, which makesregistering and searching for journey matches easy and safe. The benefits of liftsharing include savings, reduction in pollution, time saving, safety and company on frustrating trips. Liftshare South Africa is operated by Patrick Hebbard and Thozamile Javu who are passionate about improving social and environmental conditions in South Africa. Hebbard said that many residents of Drakenstein work in Cape Town and that this system could significantly improve their lives. Visit www.liftshare.co.za for more information.

at the butchery and there are grillers who braai it for them in the many blazing fireplaces right around the venue. They can then choose from traditional side dishes such as samp and pap, but salads are also available. African cuisine can also be enjoyed. Live music and DJ’s see to the entertainment over weekends. Mtala does not take any nonsense from drunkenness and disorderly behaviour. He employs security personnel and no weapons or any type of drug is allowed on the premises. Those who disobey are ‘redcarded’ and are thereafter not even allowed to buy meat at the butchery. Car guards are also at hand to safe-quard vehicles. Chippa’s is truly a spot which deserves a visit to enjoy the vibe of the township.

Lower the thermostat on your geyser to 60°C, cover it with a geyser blanket and insulate the water pipes. The most energy-hungry appliance, the geyser is responsible for up to 39% of monthly electricity bills. Consider replacing your geyser with an energy efficient alternative like solar geyser or heat pump. Keep warm this winter by dressing appropriately, use blankets, hot water bottles and insulate your home. Hot beverages will go a long way in keeping you warm. Get your winter kit on, no need to switch on.

In the event that you do switch on, keep it energy efficient. We recommend that you use heaters with a built-in thermostat and a short warm up time. Consider if the heat required is to project directionally (like a fan heater or air-conditioner) and finally, which option will be the safest.

Insulation is one of the most important solutions to improving the energy efficiency of your home. Insulated houses stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter. This keeps ambient temperature in the home constant. An insulated room requires 51% less energy to heat up, while warmth generated by heaters is more effectively retained and does not escape. Insulation reduces the need for space heating and uses less energy.

Remember, lowering your energy costs and saving electricity requires a combination of two simple decisions: • •

Switch off … all appliances and lights you do not need and are not using. Switch to … new, energy efficient technologies throughout your home. Visit www.eskom.co.za/idm for more information.

By haar is Runita Abrahams, Theresa Demas en Louise Leven. Guests will enjoy a journey through the magical realism and travel adventures of the two authors as they discuss their books in front of the roaring fire at the most hospitable and historic hotel in Paarl. Add to that the tasting of the finely crafted wines of Avondale’s proprietor Johnathan Grieve and a superbly matched dinner conjured up by Chef Roland and a host of sensory experiences awaits you. PULLETS. Nulaid is busy upgrading its Fransrug pullet rearing farm in the Voor-Paardeberg area. The project will be executed in a number of phases to ensure continuity of pullet production for delivery to the laying farms in the Western Cape. Two rearing houses and an ablution block with the latest bio-security technology, up-to-date ventilation equipment and energy saving lighting systems have been completed recently. The second phase will commence in spring.

BIBC strategy to retain industry skills THE Building Industry Bargaining Council Western Cape has announced the launch of its skills data-base, a strategy designed to retain the skills of those employees considered to be unemployed within the building and construction industry. With an annual trade turnover of up to 45%, the need to maintain this intelligence is critical. The data-base will go live by the end of June and is a first of its kind for the industry. This essential tool is designed to help combat the cyclical nature of the building and construction industry, a trend that adversely affects the demand for labour. “This industry can’t afford to lose its skilled labour force during a downturn period, as once the industry starts to expand again, the critical skills base will be required on short term notice,” says Arnold Williams, Secretary for the Building Industry Bargaining Council (Cape of Good Hope). The entire data-base comprises close to 500 000 employees records, dating back to 1983, and is the result of years of IT development. “We will monitor the usage of the data-base to establish trends, which in turn will provide us with a barometer of the industry. “The valuable information captured within the data-base is available, free of charge, to all compliant employers to ensure that they have access to the skills that are lacking at any point in time and from

which the industry as a whole can benefit. “We have on average about 800 compliant employers, at any given time, and we are once again, rewarding those employers that subscribe to good corporate governance,” said Williams. It therefore, goes without saying that non-compliant contractors will be unable to access these critical skills and will therefore be at a disadvantage. The data-base will be comprehensive focusing on all artisan as well as semi-skilled trades. In addition to these, other employment categories such as drivers, general workers, labourers and cleaners will be included. The details of between 8 000-10 000 employees, who are considered to be unemployed over a rolling 12-month period, will include name, trade category, address and contact telephone number. The one thing that Council will not be able to confirm is the competency of the individual. “Compliant employers will have their requirements e-mailed to them as soon as they make the request online,” concluded Williams. Once the service goes live, all compliant employers have to do is to log on to the BIBC website, select the Labour Bureau tab and follow the relevant instructions. If you are thinking of building, ensure that your contractor is compliant with the BIBC by logging into www.bibc.co.za or phone 021 950 7400.

A first for wine tasting: satellite linkup A LOCAL winery, Avondale, is to host a wine tasting by satellite link-up. Ritrovo, an Italian fine dining restaurant in Pretoria, will be hosting an exclusive mentored tasting of Avondale’s range of nature-friendly wines in its video conferencing room. Avondale proprietor Johnathan Grieve will discuss each wine with the guests from a remote location, via satellite link-

up in Ritrovo’s video in its state-of-the-art conferencing room. Grieve says that the Mentored Tasting is one of the ways Avondale is looking at reducing its carbon footprint. “Avondale prides itself on its innovative, forward-thinking and environmentally-conscious approach, and this is one of the ways that we will be approaching tastings in areas that are further afield in future,” says Grieve.

Volgens Giliomee is opleiding ’n baie belangrike faktor. Ander uitdagings

Free fun at winter school THE Prestige Academy will be hosting their annual Winter School from 11 to 13 July. This event attracts many Grade 12 learners from across the country. The aim of the Winter School is to give the learners a taste of what it is like to study at this institution. For more information on this free event in Bellville, contact 021 949 5036.

How to land a job even if you have none IT is the Catch-22 situation that has been frustrating jobseekers for ages: positions require experience from applicants, while applicants can’t gain experience without first having had a job. But there are ways to make oneself employable and gain experience without having landed a position in formal employment first, an education expert says. Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education, SA’s leading private education provider which focuses heavily on ensuring the job-readiness of their graduates, says what employers are looking for in many instances is just to be given proof that someone is able to self-manage and that a candidate can be trusted to make a contribution from as early as possible. “The experience requirement is an attempt to ensure new employees are productive as early as possible. “This makes good sense, and while there are several good reasons to be training new people, it is always helpful to have someone who has done something before,” says Coughlan. “If you are studying and are about to graduate, you need to be looking at all the ways you can fill the experience gap right away.” Coughlan says that students must analyse the kind of work they intend to do and then look for opportunities to build appropriate experience in that niche. “For instance, if you are studying towards a journalism qualification, volunteering to run a student newspaper or getting involved in putting together newsletters for local NGOs are the right kinds of experience to present to a potential employer. “Volunteering at a children’s home is good experience for someone studying social work or psychology, but it may not be the perfect fit for someone studying law. “However, helping to put together a fundraising campaign for the same children’s home would enable business and public relations students to put together experience they can present to potential employers,” Coughlan says. She says the beauty of gaining this kind of ‘involved citizen’ experience while studying, is that everyone wins. “You gain the skills you need, to show that you have some of the experience required by the employer, but at the same time, you are giving something back to the

society that enabled you to get the education in the first place. And the beneficiaries benefit from a much-needed service they did not have to pay for from their often meagre funding.” Career counselling researchers have noted that while the value of different attributes employers look for vary, there are key values and attitudes that attract the attention of employers. “If you keep these in mind while volunteering, you can build a set of references that speak exactly to the attributes that matter to a potential employer. “Be conscious of what you need in terms of skills, demonstrated ability and qualifications, and then set out in a determined manner to build a portfolio for yourself based on the experience and recommendations that make you different from the person next to you,” says Coughlan. She says some traits are universal in terms of their attractiveness to employers, who need to decide whether a candidate is worth investing in, and that future jobseekers should ensure they are able to demonstrate the following: • Strong work ethic: Be the person who volunteers to do more than anyone else and don’t give up until the job is done; this includes the ability to manage and motivate yourself – to get on with the job when no one is watching. • Dependability and reliability: Never let anyone down. Under-promise but over-deliver. Be loyal. • Positive attitude: Look for solutions and don’t get caught in negative spirals. • Adaptability and resilience: If circumstances change, change with them. • Integrity and honesty: Would you employ someone who lied to you? • Willingness to learn: Tackle and master new things. • People skills: Make other people feel comfortable, cultivate the ability to work well with a range of different people, and manage conflict and disagreement positively. “Gaining relevant know-how where need exists will not only enable you to tick the omnipresent ‘experience’-box on your application, it will also provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate that you have the qualities that can turn you into a valuable and valued asset, should an employer take a chance on you.”

‘Trail of Hope’ on Paarl Mountain A TRAIL RUN, the Trail of Hope in aid of Bowy House, will be presented on Paarl Mountain on 23 August. Together with Trailrunning.co.za, the organisers Frost & Sullivan have designed three trail routes in the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve to cater for various fitness levels including a 2 km walk, 5 km sprint and a 12 km run for the longer distance athlete. The trail will start at 08:00 in the scenic vineyards of Laborie Wine Farm and pass the famous Paarl Rock, before finishing back at Laborie where a picnic and wine tasting will follow. Entrants receive a goody bag, T-shirt, free entry to the

BREEK WEG.

nature reserve, a snack pack after the race and a tasting of Laborie wines. The run will take place following Frost & Sullivan’s annual Growth Innovation and Leadership event on 22 August. Avid runners, employees and C-Level Executives will actively unite to raise funds for Bowy House, a focus area of Monte Christo Miqlat, a critical care facility for babies and young children, infected or affected by HIV/Aids and life-threatening diseases. To register, visit http://trailofhope.frostinstitute.org/ to enter as an individual (R500) or a team of 4 runners (R2000). For enquiries, phone Christie Cronjé at 021 680 3566.

READY, STEADY, GO. In the annual inter-provincial 4x4 Challenge held at Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape at the weekend, Paarlite Klaus Lützeler drove his Flatfoot, a super modified vehicle, to second place. Much to the delight of the 3 000 spectators, he rolled twice, was pushed back onto his big wheels and managed to continue without any bodily or material harm. Out of the five classes, the Western Cape took two first and a second place. Pic: Malane Bosman

JEUGSPELE.

BESTE. Hanno Kotze is onlangs by Krieket Suid-Afrika se jaarlikse toekenningsaand, aangewys as Krieket Suid-Afrika se Skole T20 Speler van die Jaar.

POTENTIAL Yannick Sauls (15), a Grade 9 Paarl Gymnasium pupil, has great potential as a wrestler. Here he enjoys a friendly tussle with his coach, Raynard Botha of the Solid Rock Wrestling Academy. Yannick hails from Atlantis. Paarl Gymnasium last year granted him a five-year bursary in recognition of his rugby and athletics abilities. As part of its community involvement programme, SAPS Academy Paarl has also contributed to the development of this talented young sportsman. The Academy has sponsored his registration at Solid Wrestling Academy and his wrestling shoes. Coach Raynard - who himself started wrestling when he was six - will go all out to make Yannick a champion. “I admire his skill and potential, but mostly it is his discipline and perseverance that make me want only the best for him,” says Botha.

WEDDENSKAP.
