’n Bekende juwelierswinkel is verlede week helderoordag in die toeriste “mekka”, Franschhoek, beroof. Juweliersware van sowat R4 miljoen en ’n duur kamera is gebuit toe vyf mans verlede Donderdag op die juwelierswinkel, Tracey’s Diamonds, toegesak het. Volgens Franschhoek-polisiewoordvoerder, konst. Marize Mentoor, het twee netjies geklede mans kort voor 11:00 die juwelierswinkel binnegekom en voorgegee hulle is op soek na ’n ring. Volgens beeldmateriaal van die voorval, het die mans ’n paar minute na ringe gekyk. In die video word gesien hoe nog drie verdagtes by die

winkel se deur, wat ’n magnetiese slot het, kom staan, waarna een van die vermeende rowers binne die winkel ’n vuurwapen uithaal. Winkeleienaar, Evan Tracey, gryp dan een van die vermeende rowers vas, maar wanneer dié rower ’n vuurwapen op sy seun Matthew rig, besluit Tracey om hom te los. Die drie verdagtes dwing dan die deur van buite oop en help hulself aan juweliersware in die vertoonkaste. ’n Fotograaf ,wat in die winkel was om juweliersware vir ’n tydskrif af te neem, se kamera is ook gebuit. Die vyf verdagtes het ná die rooftog vermoedelik in drie motors – ’n silwer Audi, ’n silwer BMW en ’n swart Volkswagen Golf, almal met Kaapse registrasienommers, gevlug. wilde jaagtog agternagesit maar kon ongelukkig nie die verdagtes, wat volgens inwoners teen sowat 200 km/h gery het, inhaal nie. Tracey het die voorval bevestig. Three men are in custody after a huge abalone haul was found on a farm in Wellington. Altogether 20 546 abalone, most of them undersized, were confiscated on Friday morning during a raid on the farm Rooshoek, according to a police statement. The abalone are estimated to be worth about R10 million. The raid was conducted by members of the Wellington police, together with the air wing and the Boland K9 Unit, after a source revealed possible illegal activities on the farm. As police vehicles approached the house in question, three suspects ran away from the house. However, they were later tracked down by a chopper and detained by ground personnel, who took them back to the homestead. While conducting a search of the house, it was discovered that all the rooms contained abalone, stacked on drying racks. It is believed that the house was used as a small factory. Only 106 unprocessed abalone were found. The three suspects, all illegal Mozambique citizens, appeared briefly in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The case was postponed until 19 October for a possible bail application. The suspects remain in custody. Sources say the farm belongs to a Russian company, but this could not be confirmed.

Walk for charity this spring Entries are pouring in for the 14th Spring Walk that will take place on Saturday 25 October from the Paarl Cricket Club. The annual spring walk is the flagship community event for the Drakenstein Hospice. It was initiated and funded by Hospice volunteer Tommy Goliath and his son André in 2000, when just 281 walkers participated. The walk is a major, mass-participation fund-raiser, catering for the whole family and is the biggest community-family charity walk in Paarl, drawing walkers from all over the Cape Winelands. The Spring Walk offers a day of fun walking through some of the most scenic and historic areas of Paarl, culminating in an opportunity for families and friends to socialise, enjoy food stalls and local entertainment. The 2014 event includes four walks. ) 1,3 km family fun walk caters for the mothers and babies in prams, active toddlers or the not so fit. ) 2,8 km family fun walk – The 8 km family walk will take the walkers alongside the Berg River. Walkers will all complete the course through the Paarl Arboretum. ) 3,10 km spring walk – the 10 km spring challenge caters for the more serious social

walker. Teams of five or ten members are encouraged to enter. Man arrested for laptop theft An alleged thief was arrested last week in Alexander Street, Paarl, a day after he presumably stole a laptop. Anton Swanepoel, who is in a wheel chair, said that when he and his assistant who helps him due to his disability, returned home, he became suspicious when saw his cupboard doors were wide open. On closer inspection he discovered that his laptop had vanished. Swanepoel reported the incident to the Paarl Police, but there was no indication of when and how the laptop had gone missing.

The following day there was a knock at his front door. When his assistant opened it, he found a man who asked for water. They, however, became suspicious as the gate to the property was kept locked. When the man tried to flee, Swanepoel’s assistant apprehended him and pinned him down, while Swanepoel alerted the police. When the police arrived, the suspect allegedly admitted to having stolen the laptop the previous day after he had gained access to Swanepoel’s house through a window.

Vermeende dief loop sy rieme styf MARYKE SWART Knap polisiewerk het gesorg dat ’n vermeende dief minute nadat hy by ’n plaashuis in Klein Drakenstein gesteel het, vasgetrek is. Volgens die eienaar van ’n plaas in Klein Drakenstein, wat verkies om anoniem te bly, het ’n vermeende dief omstreeks 10:00 op Erfenisdag (24 September) deur ’n oop skuifdeur toegang tot hul plaashuis gekry. Haar 17-jarige dogter was in haar kamer toe die man instap en haar selfoon uit haar hande vat. Hy het gevra wie is nog in die huis en sy het gesê haar broer (14) en oom. DBV en Drakensteinmunisipaliteit vat weer hande Die Drakenstein-munisipaliteit het sy ooreenkoms met die Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV) van Wellington en Paarl hernu. Die doel is om die munisipaliteit te help om probleme rakende rondloper- en/of siek diere aan te spreek. “Die Drakenstein-munisipaliteit moet omsien na rondloperdiere wat potensieel siektes kan versprei of ’n gevaar inhou vir die publiek, deur onder meer die diere van die straat te neem, te probeer versorg en hul eienaars op te spoor. Die munisipaliteit beskik egter nie oor al die geriewe of

personeel om hierdie taak veilig en doeltreffend uit te voer nie. Dit is ook nie finansieel haalbaar om hierdie geriewe aan te skaf en heeltydse personeel daarvoor aan te stel nie. In die lig daarvan word hande gevat met die DBV om met die geweldige taak te help,” sê munisipale bestuurder Johann Mettler. Die ooreenkoms maak voorsiening dat die nodige dienste gelewer kan word met behulp van die DBV. Die munisipaliteit vergoed dan die DBV daarvoor. Die DBV skut probleemdiere wat aangemeld word. diere wat langer as sewe dae geskut word sonder aanspraak van ’n eienaar, sal dan die eiendom van die DBV word om mee te maak soos hy goeddink. Dié ooreenkoms spreek spesifiek honde en katte aan. “Hierdie soort ooreenkomste tussen die munisipaliteit en gemeenskapsorganisasies strek tot voordeel van die gemeenskap as geheel. Dit laat die munisipaliteit toe om bekostigbare dienste aan die gemeenskap te lewer en verskaf geleenthede aan organisasies en sakeondernemings van die omgewing.”

Beware: fire season is here With the winter barely behind us, no one expected a mountain fire so early in the summer season. As we are all too aware, these devastating fires generally take place in the harsh summer months of January, February and March. The mountain fire on Paarl Mountain of almost six years ago, which caused such havoc, is still fresh in Paarl residents’ memory. So too, are many other fires that have ravaged the surrounding mountains through the years and caused huge damage to farm land. Mountain fires are not always bad. The valuable fynbos in this floral kingdom, indeed, needs to burn every few years to rejuvenate themselves. But, as mentioned before, in many cases these fires move onto farm land, causing destruction. Unfortunately these fires are often either caused by human negligence or otherwise by the reckless behaviour of arsonists. A man was taken in for questioning with regard to the Bains Kloof fire this week, but he has been released due to lack of evidence. Unfortunately this trend of arson has increased during the years, but no one has been brought to task. The broad public can, however, assist by adhering to fire regulations and reporting any person whom they suspect is causing mischief.

Die man van Iowa het gesê, die menslike brein is so bedraad dat jy ’n nuwe taal teen minstens 500 woorde per dag kan aanleer. Nie leer deur lyste en lyste nuwe woorde in jou kop te probeer prop nie, maar moeiteloos die nuwe woorde onlosmaaklik deel van jou denkproses maak deur na ’n pragtige stuk barok of klassieke musiek te sit en luister. Omdat jy net 1 500 woorde van ’n nuwe taal moet ken om die taal vlot te kan praat, sal jy binne ’n week die nuwe taal vlot en met selfvertroue praat . . . Ek het vir die man van Iowa gesê, ek wil graag Duits praat. Hy het my na ’n instituut in Switserland gestuur waar ek, tot my stomme verbasing, ná vyf dae baie beter Duits kon praat as dié waarmee oom Oubaas van 7de Laan vir hom ’n fraulein in Duitsland losgeslaan het! Iemand anders wat ook gesorg het dat ek deur die jare ’n onvergeetlike leerervaring beleef het, was die groot voëlkenner van weleer, O.P.M. Prozesky. Ek het, deur my werk as TV-vervaardiger, die geleentheid gekry om vir drie maande saam met hom Suid-Afrika se ryk voëllewe te ervaar. Toe ons op ’n dag ’n program oor tuin-voëls wou maak, het oom

Dit lok onmiddellik al die voëls in die omtrek nader om te kom kyk presies waar die vyand is. Danksy oom Proz, kon ons ook sien hoe ’n dapper kuiken van ’n witkruisarend ’n ding regkry wat ’n totale omwenteling in die kuiken se ouers se lewe veroorsaak het. ’n Wyfie witkruisarend lê normaalweg twee eiers. Die tweede eier broei ’n hele rukkie ná die eerste een uit en die nuwe aankomeling word ná ’n rukkie deur die ouer kuiken aangeval en uit die nes geskop. In die geval van die nes wat ons dopgehou het, het die jonger kuiken die aanvalle deur die ouer kuiken so suksesvol afgeweer dat die verbaasde ouers (waarskynlik vir die eerste keer in die geskiedenis van witkruisarende) gedwing was om uiteindelik twee kuikens in stede van een groot te maak. Oom Proz het nie alleen my oë kom oopmaak vir die wonder van die voëllewe om ons nie, hy het ook gesorg dat ek en my huismense steeds elke oggend sorg dat die voels in ons tuin op die oopte voor die sitkamervenster ontbyt kom nuttig en ons met hul gedrag betower. Af en toe, soos in die afgelope maand, vereer ’n ma en ’n pa janfrederik jou deur twee eiers in ’n nessie reg voor jou slaapkamervenster uit te broei en 13 dae later wip die twee kuikens uit hul nes, kry hul eerste vlieglesse deur vrolik agter ma en pa te wip en ná ’n maand kyk diehelefamilie virjouvanuit’n hoë boom en sing . . .

Wees op die uitkyk vir sulke skelms Ek skryf hierdie boodskap omdat ek bitter teleurgesteld is in ons mensdom vandag. Ek wonder hoeveel mense besef dat indien die kliënt iets breek, of besluit hulle is nie meer lus vir die kos wat hul bestel en dan sê dat hulle iets anders wil bestel, alles van die kelner verhaal word. Dan kla ons baie gou oor ’n 10% fooitjie wat hulle verdien. Ons moet besef dat werk skaars is en almal wil nie ’n kelner wees nie, maar dat dit die enigste manier is om ’n inkomste te verdien. Maak seker jy het geld om jou rekening te betaal en maak seker dat jy ’n fooitjie kan gee of bly eerder by jou huis. Ek klim nooit in my motor as ek nie weet ek het geld vir wat ook al ek wil eet plus ’n fooitjie ingereken nie, en ek maak seker daar is geld om die motorwag te betaal.

Dis nie net mooi om so te ry en die pienk bome te sien nie, maar ook die omgee vir mense met kanker. uit die hart, en laat die bome so staan tot en met einde Oktober. Aan die gemeenskap, kyk uit vir sulke kwaaddoeners en kom ons staan saam teen hulle. Ons dorpe kry ook baie besoekers en hulle kan dan ook die mooi versierde bome sien, asook sien dat Drakenstein omgee.

Why are our lifts not working after all this time? I am a resident of the Towers on the corner of Paarl Main Road and Lady Grey Street. For the second time in just more than a year our lifts are broken. And not one, but all of them. I live on the 11th floor and one can just imagine what a daily climb it is – up and down. There are several elderly people living here who simply cannot manage the stairs, as well as mothers with babies. Also, our floors are not being cleaned as the cleaning staff

don’t want to carry their cleaning equipment up all the stairs. I feel that the administrators of the building are contravening the lease agreements, because as tenants, we signed our contracts knowing there are lifts which could take us up and down this building. And on top of it all, after three weeks without lifts, it seems as if there is no attempt being made to repair them.

Dit is die manier hoe hulle die klub wil opbreek, oor hulle lafhartige kwaadstokery en agterbaksheid. Ons as bestuur wil ’n beroep doen dat die betrokke persoon wat die skrywe gerig het, te voorskyn kom en die afrigter om verskoning vra.

Die algemene jaarvergadering van SATSA, South African Transplant Sport Association, word ook vandag gehou. Giving the gift of sight to the elderly The dream of being able to see again was made possible for 10 disadvantaged senior citizens last week thanks to free cataract surgery at Cure Day Clinics St Stephen’s, Paarl. The surgery on each patient takes

only 40 minutes and the patients, all from the Drakenstein area, could go home knowing that their lives would now be much brighter. They will now be able to see their children and grandchildren clearly again and be able to see the world around them. Hierdie inbraak volg kort op die hakke van die rooftog in Kerkstraat waarin die koster van die NG Moedergemeente van die kollektegeld beroof is, wat hy namens die kerk by ’n bank wou gaan inbetaal. Von Schlicht sê die inbrekers

het oor die veiligheidsmuur tussen die kantore en die motorhuise van Silwerkruin geklim en toe ’n venster na die kantore oopgebeur. Hulle het die elektriese krag in die kantore afgeskakel en daardeur die alarm buite werking gestel. Daarna het hulle begin om pype, veral rondom die warmwaterstelsel van die kantore, uit die mure te breek en die kantoor se telefoonlyn afgeknip. “As hulle so maklik oor die veiligheidsmuur na ons kantore kon kom, sal hulle net so maklik oor die aangrensende veiligheidsmuur van Silwerkruin, die ACVV se tehuis vir bejaardes langs ons kan klouter en dit sal chaos veroorsaak,” aldus Von Schlicht. “Die ACVV sal dringend geld in die hande moet kry om die sekuriteit van ons geboue drasties te verbeter.” * Thieves have recently been targeting charity organisations in Wellington.

Boishaaier performing in Italy FRANS LE ROUX To most Paarlite’s, the name Dario Chistolini (26) won’t mean anything. To those international rugby fanatics among us, he is a brute of a prop who recently made his debut for Italy’s national side. Dario’s connection to Paarl is that he attended Paarl Boys High, where he matriculated back in 2006. Born in Johannesburg, his family moved to Cape Town where he later enrolled at Boishaai. “After school I was part of the Boland Academy, which included players such as Willie le Roux and Cornal Hendricks.” After completing his Academy duties, Dario moved to Italy because he had a valid Italian passport. “I played in Italy for three years, then went to England for another two, where I played for Gloucester in the English Premiership.” Today he is part of Zebre Rugby Club, which competes in the Guinness Premiership and includes various South African and other international players. “We have many international

Dario Chistolini Italian players and some Super Rugby players from South Africa too. We are five South Africans in our team with ex-Cheetah and Paarl Gymnasium full-back Hennie Daniller, who joined us recently.” On why he chose to play rugby in Italy, Dario’s answer was simple. “Rugby in Italy is a growing sport. With such good backing for the sport it grows from strength to

strength. I am excited to see what the future holds for Italian rugby.” In June this 110 kg mobile prop’s dream came true when he made his test debut for Italy against Samoa. “It was such an amazing and humbling experience to get my first test cap against a strong side such as Samoa.” Training hard is a given, and each week is tough if you want to stay fit: “We train very hard for five days a week, usually the first two training days are the toughest.” Living in Italy is great, especially if one loves to indulge. “We don’t follow any specific diets, although we should stay clear of Italian staples such as pizza, pasta and the very delicious Gelato ice cream.” Dario can easily still play for another decade if he remains injury free: “Focussing on the next five years I hope to remain fit and get better in my prop position. Hopefully I can reap the rewards after all the hard work is done.” Some inspiring words from a promising young player: “My advice is simple really, just keep following your dreams and give 110 percent to achieve them. Things might just work out in the end.”

Coffee bags for change Who would have thought that a simple empty filter coffee bag can be turned into a stylish pencil case or bright coloured make-up bag. This idea is the brainchild of Corné Bekker, who entered a recycling competition at work at Mediclinic Paarl, making her first pencil bag from a used coffee bag with something as simple as a zip and few dazzling accessories. She used the zip of an old pencil bag, to attach to the bag and found that it made a delightful pencil bag. “I received amazing reactions. For almost two years, this was a great topic of conversation at many meetings, when I took out my bright yellow House of Coffee pencil bag,” she says. Friends then started asking her to make them bags and she has since received numerous orders, with one totalling 20 earlier this year. Corné then realised that she needed help and was referred to the Association of People with Disabilities just outside Paarl and they were just as excited as she was about the possibilities of these bags. She has now identified centres in Saron and Gouda where training will take place. The majority of the profits made by the sale of these bags will be donated to the centres. She has also managed to get various producers of coffee on board, such as Terbodore, a coffee roaster on the Goederust farm in Paarl and

Paarliet is beste student van USfakulteit ’n Oudleerder van Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle, Elmien Thom, is onlangs deur die Universiteit van Stellenbosch (US) as die beste nagraadse student van bestuurswetenskappe bekroon. Elmien het die toekenning ontvang vir haar uitmuntende prestasie in haar BCom-honneursgraad in operasionele navorsing wat sy in 2013 met lof geslaag het. Sy sit tans haar studie voort met haar M-graad. Prof. Stan du Plessis, dekaan van ekonomiese en bestuurswetenskappe, het die medalje gedurende ’n geselligheid op Stellenbosch aan Elmien oorhandig. Volgens prof. Du Plessis het sy die ideale van die Schumann-medalje verpersoonlik. “Akademies is sy ’n toppresteerder, maar haar belangstellings strek baie wyer as die klaskamer. Sy het boonop ’n ekstra vak geneem en as deel van haar studie het Elmien ’n navorsingsprojek vir Pep Stores gedoen,” vertel hy.

Hierdie Paarliet is die jongste van drie slim sussies uit ’n talentvolle gesin. Die oudste, dr. Matildie Thom Wium, is ’n musiekdosent aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) en ’n begaafde sangeres, terwyl Maryke van der Walt vir haar doktorsgraad in wiskunde in St. Louis (Missouri, VSA) studeer. Hul predikant-pa, ds. Jaco Thom, is die skrywer van ’n hele paar Bybelromans en ander werke en ma Elmien is ’n musiekonderwyser en orrelis. Hoewel Elmien haar studie as aktuariële wetenskapstudent begin het, het sy in haar tweede jaar na die kursus BCom (wiskundige wetenskappe) oorgeskakel. “My suster het voorgestel dat ek operasionele navorsing neem en ek was dadelik gek daarna,” vertel sy. This journey can be quite treacherous, as often it leads to them having to cross both Paarl Main Road and the Berg River Bou levard. This week, a family of geese was seen waddling down De Toit Street towards the Boulevard. KWV and Nederburg sparkle at Veritas KWV swept the boards at the 2014 Veritas Awards, winning nine double gold and 14 gold medals, accumulating a total of 55 medals, the most medals won by any producer. These awards are regarded as the Oscars of the South African wine industry. In an extraordinary performance, KWV won the Best Producer Award for the fourth year in a row, the first time this has been achieved by a South African producer. Commenting on the overall performance, KWV chief winemaker, Johann Fourie said: “We are delighted with the results which demonstrate strength in all categories, across wine and brandies.” He added that the South Africa wine category has seen a huge jump in the quality and style of wines as local producers have fought to compete on the international stage in tough economic times, against strong competition from both new-world and old-world wine producers. Fourie noted that whilst the rate of stylistic evolution and overall improvement among South African producers has been

marked, “the rate of KWV’s wine-style evolution in SA over the last ten years has been especially rapid, some would even say revolutionary. The focus for the wine-making team has been on techniques that promote vibrancy, freshness and regionality. These attributes can be seen throughout the entire KWV product range, and it’s this focus that has underpinned our success at Veritas”. Pieter de Bod, chief distiller at KWV commented, “KWV’s craftsmanship in brandy is being recognised as a credible and formidable competitor to French Cognac. Quite simply, KWV is the leader, nationally and internationally, in wine and spirit excellence.” “KWV management has supported the winemaking pursuit, with capital investment in winemaking equipment and vineyards, which has allowed our young, dynamic winemaking team to innovate and experiment. Vineyards RFC celebrating their 70th Vineyards RFC are celebrating their 70th anniversary this year and the glimmer of the Vineyard brand still shines brightly in the Paarl region. Despite recent financial difficulties, they remain consistent performers. Their recent turnaround still has many in awe. They came through a disappointing campaign in 2009, which saw them finish second last on the table. They swiftly turned their fortunes around by winning the league title in 2010 and then went on to finish as runners-up in 2011,

2012, 2013 and in 2014. Vineyards’ success is due to great governance and management of the club. Club members who played an important role in achieving this are Feisal Ahmed (chairman), together with Bronwin Whittles, Khalied Abrahams and Ganief Dulvey. Vineyards is an amateur club and players are not paid to play. Those who wear the jersey do so for the passion. Despite financial difficulties and losing players they continue to be competitive. Vineyards recent record

echoes the glories of yesteryear, when the club was considered the best team in Paarl. They won numerous domestic titles and went on to produce 15 Springbok representatives. Captain and No 8 Sulaiman Antar, centre Zubair du Plessis (Disa player) and scrumhalf Alvin Farmer, who played SA Schools, are currently the main role players in the squad. Former Springbok and DHL Western Province women’s coach Aslam Abrahams together with Naasief Abrahams and Elmo Carelse are in charge of the teams. Ahmed adds there are greater

goals they want to achieve: “We want to achieve success in the Paarl league, but we also want to make a valuable contribution to rugby in this region. We want to help Paarl get a few representative teams to compete in the Western Province Super Leagues, which would be massive for local development.” ) The club is planning a rugby day on 18 October at Faure Street stadium against Rangers RFC (Cape Town). Table Tennis Academy yields results Boland Table Tennis joined hands with the Drakenstein Municipality and launched a Junior Table Tennis Academy at the newly built Paarl Thusong Centre earlier this year. This initiative marked the realisation of a dream for table tennis enthusiasts in the Drakenstein area, and was made possible through close cooperation and partnering with the National Lotteries Board, Department of Sport (Boland regional office) and local schools. The project aims to promote the development of table tennis as a sport amongst disadvantaged youths and aspiring table tennis players in the local Nederburg and surrounding areas in Paarl, with emphasis on addressing the socio-economic challenges facing these communities on a daily basis. The programme is held once a week on Tuesday’s from 14:00 to 17:00. Boland Table Tennis employs and provides qualified coaches to facilitate all activities at the centre. To date seven players attending the academy have been selected for the Junior Boland team. In addition, two academy players have been selected for the Western Cape Schools team which will be participating in the National School Sport tournament during December this year. Boland Table Tennis and its partners wish to invite all interested players and schools to join them on the remaining dates for the year.
