Inbrekers vasgevat in Noorder-Paarl Frans le Roux ’n ONLANGSE rits huisinbrake het die inwoners van die Paarl omtrent bekommerd. Daar was verlede week drie inbrake in Noorder-Paarl, maar ’n paar kalante is ook aangekeer.

In Mertenstraat, Noorder-Paarl, is Kallie le Roux verlede week Dinsdag in die vroeë oggendure verras toe hy ’n man in sy huis betrap het.

In die proses is Le Roux met ’n mes gewond, maar die inbreker het ontsnap. Le Roux sterk tans aan by sy huis.

Later die dag is ’n man, Motsani Rantsani (31), in dieselfde gebied in hegtenis geneem vir dié misdaad, met gesteelde goedere in sy besit. Hy word verbind met agt ander onlangse inbrake.

Die polisie het twee verdere arrestasies gemaak toe hulle vir Nico Burns (24) en Apols Fortuin (40) weens verskillende huisinbrake aangekeer het.

Burns is aangekeer ná ’n inbraak Donderdagoggend by ’n woonstel in Pastorielaan waarin elektroniese ware gesteel is.

Hy is later die dag in Lady Greystraat gearresteer waar hy met die sportsak vol goedere gestap het. Die sportsak stem ooreen met die beskrywing van die sportsak wat uit die woonstel gesteel is.

Apols Fortuin is gearresteer ná ’n huisinbraak in Noorder-Paarl. Terwyl ’n vingerafdrukspesialis die toneel van die inbraak besoek het om vingerafdrukke te neem, het hy vir Fortuin in die buurt gewaar.

Fortuin is ondervra oor die inhoud van sy sak en daarna in hegtenis geneem.

Inbrake is ook verlede week gerapporteer in New Orleans, Paarl-Oos Die meeste van die huisinbrake vind tussen 01:00 en 07:00 plaas.

Lightning strikes THE Agter Paarl area and parts of Paarl and Groot Drakenstein were left without power from 11:00 to 21:00 during stormy weather on Saturday when the Eskom substation in Windmeul was struck by lightning during heavy weather.

Some residents had to sit out the wet and cold without electricity until midnight before the complete power grid was restored.

On Saturday another power blackout was experienced from 16:40 in Denneburg’s Hanepoot Street vicinity after a low voltage circuit breaker at Belmont substation malfunctioned. It was replaced and by 23:00 power had been restored. Street lighting was not affected.

Previous power outages in Denneburg have been ascribed to faults on high voltage equipment and trees growing over the lines.

Undercurrent of concern DESPITE the excitement of all the interschools matches and derbies, there is an undercurrent of concern in the Paarl Valley, due to increasing poverty and crime.

Leafy suburbs like those in Noorder Paarl, and many others, have been hard hit by a growing spate of burglaries by thieves who will do anything to get hold of valuables - probably to feed their drug habits.

In poorer areas there is a different war being fought - that of survival at all costs. While people who have no other means of making a living, run house shops or trade on the street, others who have no scruples, rob them of their hard earned income. And of great concern, is the fact that the robbers seem to be targeting foreigners, especially Somalians. Add to this the fact that many people trade drugs and alcohol from their homes it is an explosive situation.

In a scenario like this, people must be aware of the dangers, ensuring that their homes and belongings are secure. Parents must also raise their children to be aware of the deadly long term effects of drugs, which are decimating our youth. One can only hope for effective action from the police to assist in the battle against this scourge of crime..

Dit word toe goedgekeur sonder dat ons klagtes in aanmerking geneem word. Goedkeuring op watter gronde?

Ons probeer nog om ’n antwoord van die munisipaliteit te kry.

Die munisipale woordvoerder reageer: Drakenstein Munisipaliteit ontvang daagliks talle klagtes rakende honde wat ’n oorlas veroorsaak. Die munisipaliteit poog om elke klagte so gou as moontlik by te woon en af te handel.

Drakenstein Munisipaliteit se Wetstoepassing het aandag gegee aan elke klagte vanaf mnr Du Preez rakende die blaffende honde. Die klagtes is hanteer en die skuldige is daaroor aangespreek.

Na ’n geruime tyd het mnr Du Preez weer geskakel rakende die aantal honde wat die buurman aanhou. Mnr Du Preez is daarop gewys dat die buurman volgens prosedure aansoek gedoen het vir die aanhou van ’n derde hond.

I first checked the perimeters of our complex and found nothing. I then ran to the street.

The following ten minutes was unbelievable. The proverbial “witch hunt” took place right in front of my eyes.

I saw children, women and men of all ages, sizes and walks of life (armed with sticks and even golf clubs) searching for the attacker. Our community stood together, united and ready to seek justice for the crime that had just been committed What felt like an hour turned out to be less than ten minutes until the vagrant was caught.

Katte bly nie in hul erwe nie en loop en raas by ander mense se huise. Hul katte hinder egter nou my honde en nou hou my honde ons almal wakker.

As ’n oudstudent wat nog elke jaar pligsgetrou die jaarlikse kragmeting ondersteun,was ek hierdie jaar uiters teleurgesteld.

Eerstens: Hoekom moes NO se seunshokkie teen Labori speel? Kan KN dan nie ’n span in die veld stoot nie? ’n Tweede teleurstelling was om Woensdag 8 Augustus uit te sien na ’n dag van derbyrugby tussen die B-spanne net om uit te vind dat NO

teen Wellington Sekondêr speel.

Dit laat my wonder of die hele spektakel nog ’n interskole-kragmeting tussen NO en KN genoem kan word, aangesien daar nou talle buiteskole betrek word. Waar is KN se spanne?

Wat het geword van sportmangees waar daar sommige jare lap-lap spanne bymekaar geskraap was vir die derby net sodat daar ’n span vir die opponente op die veld gestuur kan word nie, wen of verloor?

Ek was onlangs geskok toe ek wakker word en die selfoon langs my bed is weg.

Ons ontdek toe dat ’n inbreker in die nag die skuifdeur op ons agterstoep oopgedwing en verskeie items uit die huis gesteel het. Hy was ook in ons kamer terwyl ons geslaap het.

Toe die polisie ons huis besoek, is ons ingelig dat dit die 28ste inbraak in Noorder-Paarl was vir die maand van Julie en dit was teen 20 Julie!

So Paarliete - wees gewaarsku: ’n skuifdeur is vir ’n vasbe-

rade, dwelmhonger dief geen probleem om oop te maak nie.

Jy moet ongelukkig nou ook ’n diefalarm of veiligheidslot op jou skuifdeur voeg by jou sekuriteitsarsenaal.

Die polisie maak nie graag die misdaadsyfer bekend nie, dus moet ons maar ons eie afleidings maak.

Onlangs het hulle wel in ons straat ’n draai gemaak en ’n groot geraas gemaak (die dief het hom vermoedelik toe al lankal uit die voete gemaak), maar dit lyk nie of hulle juis hond haar-af maak om die vele oortreders te vang nie.

Skokkende getal huisinbrake DAAR is in die afgelope maand by vele huise ingebreek in Noorder-Paarl. Verlede Dinsdagoggend in Mertensstraat het drie mans in ’n huis ingebreek terwyl die vrou tuis was - een van sewe inbrake daardie oggend.

Ander wat ter haar hulp gegaan het, is met messe aangeval. Een goedhartige man is drie keer in die rug gesteek en in die kop. ’n Mes en “tik” is agtergelaat.

By my huis is daar ’n paar weke terug ook ingebreek, die persoon het in die huis ingestap

terwyl my vrou en kinders reggemaak het vir skool. Daar is ook by ander bure goed gevat en ingebreek.

Die polisie het my die volgende oggend vroeg ’n SMS gestuur om te sê die saak is onopgelos en hulle sien dit as afgehandel.

Ek weet die polisie gaan nie die statistiek bekend maak nie, maar dit raak nou belaglik en niemand word in hegtenis geneem nie.

Disappointed I WAS disappointed by the behaviour of some of the volunteers at the Samaritan’s Feet footwashing ceremony held on Mandela Day in Mbekweni. I was shocked when I saw some people trying to misappropriate the shoes we were handing out to the children.

We need to heed the call of the great father of our nation, Nelson Mandela, to understand the true meaning of the word volunteerism - it means you do something without expecting to get anything in return.

Do not destroy the good we try to do in the community with such actions.

Wiskunde-marathon kom Johan Nel

DIE ongekende sukses wat die leerlinge van die Pauw Gedenkskool die afgelope paar jaar in landwye wiskunde-wedstryde behaal het, het gelei tot die besluit om die skool se vaardighede met wiskunde nou op groot skaal in te span om fondse vir die skool in te samel.

VolgensCarmantheaCarstens,watdie nuwe Wiskunde-Marathon bestuur, wil die skool met behulp van sy leerlinge se bewese vermoëns om somme blitsvinnig te verwerk op 24 Augustus poog om minstens R100 000 vir die skool in te samel.

“Ons gaan vanaf 14:00 op Vrydag 24 Augustus ’n tamaai Wiskunde-marathon by die skool van stapel laat loop. Die leerlinge en alle ander mense wat graag wil deelneem, moet in die namiddag en aand altesaam 200 000 somme op die rekenaar voltooi.

Vicky Davis, die bekende Pasella-aanbieder, sal ook deur die loop van die middag ’n verrassingsbesoek by die marathon aflê.

“Besoekers kan ook, indien hulle wil, deelnemers teen R50 per 100 somme borg of hulle kan vir ons ’n donasie gee - maak nie saak hoe gering nie. Of hulle kan bloot kom en vir ons ’n hand gee om van die marathon ’n groot sukses te maak.”

Lions maak skoon DIE Lions van Wellington werk nou saam met die Korrektiewe Dienste en Drakenstein Munisipaliteit om elke tweede Saterdag van die maand (as die weer dit toelaat) die ingange van die dorp skoon te maak.

Daar word gemiddeld 80 tot 90 sakke rommel elke keer opgeruim deur mans wat gemeenskapsdiens moet verrig. Een keer is daar 129 sakke rommel opgetel.

Die meeste van hierdie mans gaan werk sonder dat hulle die oggend iets geëet het en die Lions probeer dus om iets vir hulle te gee om te eet.

Several PAC (Pan-African Congress of Azania) supporters gathered in Mbekweni on Saturday to attend a Heroes’ Day programme in commemoration of the death of Poqo members during the uprising which took place in Paarl in 1962. Child lung health study LUNG infections and chest problems are common in young children.

The Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch are doing a study in the Drakenstein area, to find out the effect of chest infections in the first year of life on the development of lung disease in children.

The study will also look at a number of other factors that may affect your child’s health.

Pregnant mothers are invited to participate in this study. Both mother and baby will carefully be followed up for a

few years at your primary health care clinic and Paarl Hospital. Should your baby get sick with a chest infection he/ she will be carefully investigated to try and find out the cause of the infection.

The study will help us to better understand why children get chest illnesses and may help to improve child health. Blind pianist shines her light

YING-SHAN TSENG is a vibrant nine-year-old pianist, born visually impaired, who succeeded in her audition for the Samro National Music Competition, taking place in September. She will perform at the Bôrdienghuis Theatre in Wellington on 21 August at 19:00.

She already had a keen interest in music and sounds at only a few months old.

By the time Ying-Shan celebrated her first birthday, she could recite almost fifty songs without hesitation.

Due to her lack of vision she had no interest in other toys. Her grandparents bought her a little keyboard and the rest is, as they say, history.

Ying-Shan started with her first piano lessons in October 2007. From the start she was taught to play like a sighted child, this included basic piano theory. She is extremely dedicated and practices for many hours per week, often sharing the piano with her little sister, aged six.

In 2009 she attended a mainstream primary school in Johannesburg. Here she socialised with sighted children without any difficulty. Ying-Shan has no vision and can only sense light and dark. She was also able to do the same school work as the students.

In 2011, she was transferred to the Pioneer School in Worcester due to their readiness regarding better life orientations and music education.

Ying-Shan has since under the teachings of Dr Joan Wootton and Elmarie van Aarde mastered a number of Unisa Grade 6 and Grade 8 pieces, which will form part of her programme for this concert.

PIANIST. Ying-Shan Tseng (9) a visually impaired pianist will perform at the Bôrdienghuis Theatre in Wellington on 21 August at 19:00.

She has won numerous awards in both district eisteddfods and provincial competitions. Her most precious awards to date include Most Inspired Junior Performer at the National Eisteddfod Academy in 2009 and the Grand Champion Award for Instrumentalists aged between 5 and 15 years old in 2010 at the South African Championships for Performing Arts. The latter included a fully paid trip to Los Angeles.

Talent competition THE Global Spotlight Talent Search Competition invites singers, dancers and actors to enter and stand the chance to win great prizes.

Action against problem buildings to be launched soon in Drakenstein THE Drakenstein Municipality is gearing itself to deal purposefully and decisively with owners who allow their buildings to go to ruin or who allow unlawful activity on site.

Drakenstein Mayoral Committee has approved, in principle, the draft Problem Building By-Law. The By-Law will be advertised for public comment whereafter it will be submitted to Drakenstein Council, together with any comments or objections by the public, for final approval.

Problem buildings are properties that violate national building regulations which meanbuildingsthatareovercrowdedorinabad state, are the subject of numerous complaints from the public, are invaded by illegal squatters or pose a serious health or safety risk in terms of national building regulations.

Benewens die groot styging is koopkragverbruikers ook ontstoke oor die nuwe basiese tarief, wat wissel volgens die Ampere van die huishouding se kragtoevoer. Hoe groter die toevoer, hoe groter die dagtarief.

HOCKEY * Raining goals for Paarl Ladies The ladies played on Women’s Day in Stellenbosch and it was raining goals. It was a run away game with a 14 - 0 victory for Paarl. Stellenbosch didn’t know what hit them with all the goals being scored.

The goals were scored by Inkies Loubser (1), Annelise Smeda (4), Sain Bradbury (4), Celestte Botha (2), Louise de Roubaix (1), and two by the captain Anél Beukes.

On Saturday the ladies played against WPCC and the score was 2-2 on a soaking wet astro. Inkies Loubser scored the first goal for Paarl off a rebound ball, taking Paarl to an early lead and minutes later Paarl visited the goal post of WPCC again securing a short corner with Anel Beukes capitalizing taking the half-time score 2-0. WPCC didn’t leave it there and levelled the game.

The men’s first team suffered their second defeat of the season against a formidable WPCC. Paarl led most of the game with Francois (the Hammer) Hamer, Donovan (Mr Biceps) Caldecott and Brett Bailey scoring one goal each, with the scores levelled at 3-3. WPCC put the final nail in Paarl’s coffin with the final score 4-3.

The men’s second team also suffered defeat against a formidable and a stronger Hermanus team. After 7 minutes of play, the game was stopped due to a hail storm.

With the resuming of the game, Hermanus scored their first goal from a short corner.

This was the longest game played with 5 breaks of 10 to 15 minutes because of the hail storms that hit Paarl on Saturday.

This played a huge role in the morale of the Paarl players, needless to say Hermanus just steam rolled over Paarl and secured a 4-0 victory.

GOUD. Larissa Burger, ’n sportbestuurstudent aan CPUT Wellington, het onlangs deelgeneem aan USSA Tuimel- en Trampolienkampioenskappe op Stellenbosch en aan die USSA Artistiese Gimnastiekkampioenskappe op Phillippi.

Op Stellenbosch het sy goud verwerf in tuimel, “blacktop” en mini-trampolien en op Phillippi het sy in artistiese gimnastiek die beste presteer op al vier haar apparate (balk, brug, vloer en spronge) en algeheel goud verwerf. Sy is die afgelope elf jaar verbonde aan die Wynland Gimnastiekakademie as gimnas, afrigter en beoordelaar.

DIE Boland Hoogspring-akademie wat onlangs sy deure in die Paarl geopen het, wil hoogspringers en afrigters blootstel aan nuwe afrigtingsmetodes.

Dié akademie is deel van die Paarl-atletiekklub en word bedryf onder die vaandel van Boland Atletiek.

DERBYWENNERS. New Orleans Sekondêr se o.19A-rugbyspan het verlede Saterdag op ’n papsopnat Faurestraat-stadion oortuigend met Klein Nederburg Sekondêr afgereken en die 2012 derby met 25-8 gewen.

BABA-BOKKE. Die SA-skole o.18-rugbyspan het onlangs teen Frankryk gespeel op Wellington. Hier is JD Schickerling van Gimnasium besig om op een van sy sterk lopies te gaan op die veld by Hugenote Hoër. Schickerling is een van drie spelers vanaf die Drakenstein-area wat ingesluit was in die span. Handré Pollard (Paarl Gimnasium) en Gideon Koegelenberg (Hugenote Hoërskool) het ook gespeel. Die SA skolespan het die wedstryd 17-7 gewen. In die wedstryd tussen Engeland en Wallis het Engeland 28-25 gewen.

OORSEE. Vyf toutrekkers en ’n afrigter sal aan die begin van September die Paarl-toutrekklub se naam in Switserland hoog hou wanneer hulle vir die SA nasionale span aan die wêreldkampioenskappe gaan deelneem. Van links is Stefan Venter (senior mans), Eljo van den Berg (senior dames), Johnnie Thiart (o.23 mans), Tumiza Nkanunda (o.23 mans), Gerdus van Rhyn (o.23 mans) en Abrie van den Berg (afrigter van die o.23 span). Veertien lande neem aan vanjaar se kampioenskappe deel.

Eid ul-Fitr is a day when family, friends, neighbours and loved ones gather to cele-

brate their sacrifices of fasting, increased prayers and good deeds and abstaining from worldly pleasures to attain God Consciousness.

Eid is a day of sharing, love, mercy, forgiveness and joy.

ON the eve of the joyous day of Eid ul Fitr (Labarang) I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Muslims of Paarl and surrounding areas an Eid Mubarak (Slamat). The well wishes and encouragement we receive from our non-Muslim friends and family during this month are overwhelming.

The Muslim community of Paarl has been observing the obligatory fasting during the month of Ramadaan. Preparation for the month does not stop with spiritual preparation.

The Imaam together with the committee must also prepare a Ramadaan program for the daily activities that take place during the month.

The Muslim community has grown and is spread over the entire Paarl valley.

During Ramadaan all three mosques and two temporary mosques in Groenheuwel and Smartie Town were

all used for the spiritual activities that are performed during this holy month.

Besides the five daily obligatory prayers that are performed at these mosques, Muslims also attend mosque every evening to perform extra non-obligatory Taraweegh prayers.

At each of these mosques there is a team of Huffaath (those who have memorised the Quran) who lead the prayers.

We are grateful to those members of the community that have made themselves available this year to lead us and make the Ramadaan program a success.

We also have invited wellknown spiritual leaders (Sunday mornings) to address the community on the benefits of Fasting.

On the 25th night of Ramadaan which is called Lailatul Qadr (the night of power) the community assembles at the Lapperts Street mosque to take part in a mass boeka (breaking of fast).

Here each one brings a plate of cookies and shares it with someone else. After the sermon those who can will spend the rest of the night in Ibadah (spiritual upliftment).

In a few days time we will be celebrating Eid with our loved ones, family and friends.

Besides abstaining from eating and drinking Ramadaan also provides us with the opportunity to give charity to those in need.

During this month Muslims increase their charitable work. This can be in the form of food, clothes or cash. This is handed to the Zakah fund which is responsible to distribute it to those who are in need.

We would also like to thank our donors and sponsors who make every Ramadaan a special month. We wish to say ‘baie slamat’ to all and may Allah accept our fasting, our good deeds and our prayers, Insha Allah. May you all have a wonderful Labarang Day.

En dit is presies wat gebeur het. New Orleans met hul swaarder pak voorspelers het die kitaar voorlangs geslaan en uiteindelik maklik met 25-8 geseëvier.

LAKWERK. Jovean Jordaan van KN ontduik vir Jaundré Alwyn, maar loop hom kort daarna teen NO-verdedigers vas.

NO het aan die begin van die wedstryd effens gegly en Owen Krediet (heelagter) van Klein Nederburg Sekondêr het deurgegly om die eerste punte aan te teken. Dit was al drie wat KN kon druk en Garen Kulsen het later ook met een strafskop geslaag.

Daarna was dit so te sê eenrigtingverkeer met NO wat stelselmatig met hul swaarder voorspelers hul wurggreep op die wedstryd verstewig het.

Selfs in die tweede helfte, toe mens sou reken dat KN die wind tot hulle voordeel sou gebruik, het NO gereeld in hul opponente se kwartgebied geboer.

Vir NO het Angus Cornelissen (vleuel), Chesné van Wyk (senter), Jaundré Alwyn (flank) en Juan Aaron (slot) agter die doellyn gaan kuier.

Dale Watts (losskakel) het met een doelskop en een strafskop geslaag.

“Die amptenary en skeidregters van Boland lewer diens van onskatbare waarde aan die skole en daarom wil ons ook ons opregte apologie tot hulle rig,” sê hy.

Met die ter perse gaan het Klein Nederburg Sekondêr nog geen kommentaar oor die voorval gelewer nie.

Ivan Pekeur van die Boland-rugbyunie sê hy weet niks van die voorval nie en ondersoek nie meer dié tipe voorvalle nie.

KN kon daarin slaag om die o.14A-rugbywedstryd (6-5) en die o.16A-rugbywedstryd (15-3) te wen. Hulle was ook baas in die o.16A (11-5) en o.14A (13-7) netbal.

Ander rugby-uitslae: o.19B (NO wen met 13-0) en o.15A (NO wen met 14-12).

New Orleans het die o.19A-netbal met 22-14 gewen.

Op die sokkerveld was NO ook baas en het hulle die o.19A-wedstryd met 6-1 en die o.15A-wedstryd met 7-2 gewen.

In die meisies- sowel as die seunstafeltenniswedstryde het die New Orleansspanne koning gedraai en al hul wedstryde gewen. (Meisies o.19A - NO wen 4-3 en meisies o.15A - NO 6-1 en seuns o.19A - NO wen 5-2 en o.15A NO wen 6-1).

Klein Nederburg se seunsbasketbal was nog ’n ligpuntjie toe hulle NO met 21-7 kafgedraf het. NO se dogtersbasketbalspan het gemaklik met 38-12 gewen.

In die skaakstryd was die telling 4-4 elk.

Op die hokkieveld het die o.19A-meisiespanne met 0-0 gelykop geëindig en in die o.19A- seunswedstryd het KN se span nie vir die wedstryd opgedaag nie. NO moes toe teen Labori speel.
