LUXURY APARTMENTS WHERE THE RIALTO CINEMA ONCE WAS
97 On Strand on beach front 9
7 On Strand, set on the site of the former landmark Rialto Cinema in the Strand, has now been launched and has four show apartments ready for viewing. The master of ceremonies at the launch event was former Miss South Africa and Top Billing presenter Jo-Ann Strauss, who matriculated from local school HottentotsHolland High. Guests included Raoul Barenblatt, former owner of the Rialto Cinema, and ward councillor of ward 83 Dave Venter. Local businessmen Andre du Plessis and Arjan Ockhuisen took on the semi-complete apartment building – which had been stalled for two years –, and have upgraded it significantly. Barenblatt out- The view of False lined the history of the location, where the original movie house was owned by his father from 1935, but which burnt down early one Saturday morning – after a showing of Hans Die Skipper) in 1952 – to be rebuilt with modern conversions in 1980. “The Rialto may no longer exist, but now a new, modern, beautiful building is in its place, and I congratulate Arjan and Andre on this lovely building, and wish them lots of luck for the future, which they
certainly deserve,” Barenblatt said. A commemorative sculpture of a movie camera was unveiled, which now graces the entrance area of 97 on Strand. Some insight into what the Council has in mind for the area was provided by Venter: “I can remember coming to the Rialto in the winter time, when you got a cup of soup and a blanket to cover your knees! In terms of what is going to happen in the precinct opposite this building, which is supposed to house 130 traders, but sometimes sees up to 210 – this is going to see the number of traders reduced and moved into a focal area. Also, the sea wall, which was built in the early 1900s, will start being Bay from the show flat repaired and upgraded from the next financial year. To upgrade the entire wall from Greenways to the Lourens river will take five years and cost R27–37 million, and will take the form of an esplanade where people can walk and sit. The environmental impact assessment is currently being done and processes are being put in place, and we plan to start next year in the tidal pool area.” Monte Jordaan, CEO of Somerset West-based Multi Projects, whose
Multi Projects Property Management Pty Ltd arm will be handling the body corporate management, tenant management of units belonging to owners , who want to use their units for holiday accommodation, said that since 1995 about 700 new beachfront apartments have been built in the Strand. “Since 2004, 472 new apartments have been completed on the Strand beach front and most have been sold, with potential buyers entering the market every month. If everything normalises as it should in due course, prices of beach front apartments will recover substantially. So I believe the time to buy is now. “Those who think the market is going to drop further – I think you have missed the boat. At the current rate we will run out of available stock in the next 18 months – and from then on the pressure on prices will go upwards, especially in a premier building like this, which compares to the best in the world.” Ockhuisen and Du Plessis bought the building six months ago and they foresee completion of 97 On Strand by 1 December. They have agents on site at the building every day from 10:30 until 16:00 to show potential buyers around, with four furnished show flats on the fourth floor. The 31 apartments include one-, two- and three-bedroom/penthouse layouts and are sized from 77 m² to 185 m² (from 94 m² to 209 m² including balconies). The balconies wrap around corners, so that every apartment has the best of all views: sea, and mountains one way, and the Helderberg the other. The apartments range from R1,295 million to R1,895 million for a spacious two-
97 On Strand bedroom en suite apartment, and from R3,2 million to R4,750 million for a penthouse. There are also two one-bedroom apartments each priced at R1,495 million. All prices include VAT, transfer duty, and one shared lockable garage. There is a commercial element on the ground floor, and four of the five

shops have been taken, with negotiations taking place on the final one. Four of the apartments have already been sold. View the show flats on site, 7 days a week from 10:30-16:00. Cindy Mey wins R1,2 million eco home at Green Expo At the final Green Expo of 2012, held in Cape Town this weekend, Expo visitor Cindy Meyer was announced as the winner of the R1,2 million eco home! Cindy was drawn as a finalist at the Sandton Green Expo held in September this year and flown to Cape Town by The Green Venture Group along with Bea, to compete in the final event on Sunday which took place at The Green Expo.
In a nail-biting event which saw each of the four contestants attempt to open the four locked doors, appropriately name Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink with their key, Cindy was the lucky finalist whose key turned the lock and opened the Re-use door to her new home. Courtesy of The Green Venture Group and The Green Expo in association with National Geographic Channel, Cindy is now the proud owner of a magnificent R1, 2 million
home in a first-of-its-kind Eco Village in the picturesque Wellington valley. The Rozelle Eco Village in Wellington is the pilot project of a series of similar eco villages planned for various locations in South Africa. Cindy who currently lives in Johannesburg, is planning to become an inhabitant of Cape Town very soon. She will receive the keys to her new home when construction is complete in 2014.

GELÄNDEWAGEN: A BOMB-PROOF RIDE
MBs GClass the fearsome monster HANJO STIER
M
ercedes-Benz is one of the most innovative automotive brands on the planet, never mind the oldest, so it’s rather surprising that they have a monster lurking in their price list. A rugged, uncompromising, almost backwards machine called (insert sounds of thunder) Der Geländewagen. OK, so the G-Wagen isn’t really a monster and simply a pleasant spin-off from Mercedes’ military vehicles division. Developed in collaboration with Magna-Steyr, the first GClass appeared in 1979. Mercedes already built four-wheel-drives in the twenties but the W460 was their first 4x4 offering for civilian Fritz. Although continuously improved upon, the car’s rugged nature ensured its popularity and an uncontested first place for the longest ever Mercedes production run. With no sign of fading demand and 33 years under its belt, the G-Class even wipes the floor with Bobby Ewing’s R107 SL which managed a measly 18 years. A few explanations for this longevity may be its ancient ladder frame chassis with eight mounting points for the square body, not forgetting its solid axles, heavy duty suspension, 60cm wading depth, low range transfer case and three diff locks - centre, front and rear for 100% traction. This sturdy construction happens in Graz, Austria, where every Geländewagen is built by hand. The reason we only welcomed the G-Class in April last year (and now, its updated form) is that there wasn’t much demand for right-hand-drive vehicles. When Australia ordered 1 200 military units, Mercedes-Benz immediately updated their production and RHD models started rolling off the line. South African Mercedes execs weren’t the only ones who jumped at the opportunity when a civilian right-hooker business model became viable. Good on ya’ Bruce for ordering a whole heap of the stuff and thanks to MBSA for bringing the legend to town. You only need to visit Som-
erset West or Stellenbosch to spot an older, meticulous G-Class which someone imported at great expense. These enthusiasts keep the legend alive and are helped by Hollywood celebrities who regard the Gee (usually in AMG and/or convertible trim) as the coolest must-have on wheels. Another famous passenger is his holiness the Pope, whose Geländewagen has been dubbed the Popemobile or Papa G. This week’s launch celebrated a host of new features to the W463 range, including a new model and engine changes. The entry-level, basic G300 Professional remains unchanged. New for the rest of the gang are better door mirrors and LED daytime running lights. The fresher models receive a much-needed update to their interior which now falls in line with Mercedes-Benz standards. The new dashboard has a central TFT monitor and COMAND selector knob as well as new dials, switches, gear lever and multi-function steering wheel. Crucially, this update has given the G-Class safety and comfort fea- Steering tures which wouldn’t be out of place build. in a big Mercedes sedan. Highlights are park sensors, Harmon Kardon speakers, ESP/ABS, tyre pressure monitors, media interface, ventilated multi-contour seats, Blind Spot Assist and COMAND with DVD. G63 AMG has a restyled front bumper with large air intakes, red brake callipers and 20inch rims, exquisite cross-stitching and Alcantara trim, a sunroof, reversing camera and Chrome package. The AMG also sets itself apart with side-exit exhaust pipes of the gigantic and loud variety. Non-AMG derivatives can be ordered with the G63’s toys as extras and, depending on model, the options list also includes Sports and other packages, Sports exhaust (G500 only), brush guard, headlight grills, privacy glass, rear entertainment, bigger wheels and

tyres. As for engines, G350 BlueTEC retains its 155kW/540Nm turbo-Diesel V6 while the lunatic G55 AMG Kompressor was dragged away from licking windows and fitted with an even crazier 5.5L Bi-Turbo V8 (400kW/760Nm) to become the G63 AMG. Slotting in between these two is the new G500, powered by a 285 kW/530 Nm V8. This 5.5L unit was fished out of Mercedes’ redundant engine skip because it can stomach substandard fuels ‘ahem’ in third world countries ‘cough cough’. Unfortunately, we won’t get convertible, crew cab or G65 AMG models. Local models are highly customisable though and delivery of a regular one should take about 2-3 months. Prices start at an eye-watering R786 900 for the
G300 Professional and end at a heart-stopping R2 047 000 for a G63 AMG. In return for your second mortgage, you do get a phenomenal 4x4. On our launch route, a convoy of Gees snaked through KZN’s sugar fields and into a rather muddy off-road playground. No problems for the extremely capable G-Class, even when fitted with AMG goodies and 20-inch low-profile tyres. Steering and road-holding are definitely last millennium yet all G-Classes exhibit a bomb-proof ride and build. Some observers hated it, others were infatuated and most fainted at the mention of prices. One thing’s for sure though, its prices are as fearsome as its desirability and off-road abilities. – Galimoto Media

Chevrolet’s new towering Trailblazer FRANS LE ROUX
S
ome years ago a gap opened up in the bottom end of the SUV market. A gap that was to be filled with the introduction of the so-called bakkie-based SUV. It fitted nicely between your normal doublecab bakkie and luxurious top of the range SUV’s. Competing in this “newly founded” category were manufacturers such as Mitsubishi with their Pajero Sport, Ford, briefly with their Everest, and the reigning champion, Toyota’s Fortuner. The SUV purists among us complained that all the above mentioned vehicles were just a fancy shell welded onto a “bakkie’s” chassis. That was obviously true, but to their owners these cars lived up to their expectations. The latest edition to this much coveted highsales market, is an attractive offering from Chevrolet called the Trailblazer. And it’s here to do one thing – to try it’s hardest to dethrone Toyota’s Fortuner. The Fortuner is based on the Hilux which has been a sales success like no other. Chevrolet is now following the same route with the Trailblazer as it is based on the next generation 2013 Isuzu KB-bakkie. So in truth all Isuzu lovers should relate to the Trailblazer. Three models are available, of which two are diesel. A 2.5 and 2.8 diesel engine are available producing 110 kW/350 Nm and 132 kW/470Nm respectively, while on the petrol side you can look forward to a 3.6 V6 with 176 kW/330Nm. My test car was the 2.8 4X2 LTZ automatic. Lets start with some facts and figures. Both the Fortuner and Trailblazer uses 4-cylinder turbo diesel engines. The one in the Toyota is very reliable, but it has been around for close to 8 years. The 3.0d4d in the Fortuner has 120kW/340Nm while the 2.8 Duramax diesel trumps it resoundingly with its
Toyota’s Fortuner drivers should look anxiously in their rear-view mirror when they see the Trailblazer approaching. PHOTO: SIEB SIEBERHAGEN 132kW/470Nm. As a result, the Chevy outruns the Toyota on acceleration and will make light work of towing your caravan to Hartenbos over the summer holidays. My test vehicle was fitted with a solid 6-speed auto-box which I struggled to fault after my 500 km trip. When I had the cruise control engaged, especially on a hilly road, the gearbox did not once feel confused or lazy. That is partly due to it being a good gearbox and partly thanks to the superb torque from the 2.8. One very noticeable aspect was the noisy engine at idling speedreminding one of the old Isuzu bakkies. Fuel consumption was also very reasonable considering the weight and the automatic gearbox. My combined figures were spot-on with that of the manufacturer at 10 lit-
ers/100km. The Trailblazer is about 10 cm longer than the Fortuner and its 3rd-row seats are easily accessible to adults. Cup-holders and air-con vents for the passengers in the boot just adds to the comfort of the Chev. Those same two seats can be neatly tucked away if you want to use the boot space. The rest of the interior features comfortable seats, loads of leg and headroom and some nice touches on the two-tone dashboard. A black leather multi-function steering wheel where the driver can operate the cruise control, adjust the volume or answer his/her cellphone. The climate control’s display is massive and the cabin temperature could easily be seen by passengers using the 3rd-row seating. In contrast, I found the display of the en-
gine heat and fuel gauge too small. Another let down was the sound quality of the soundsystem. The green dot-matrix display on the audio display reminds one of the first pc’s back in the 80’s. A nice touch though, is the 4-wheel drive select system which is operated using a modern selector which one can just turn to select a specific gear. This is a step in the right direction considering that the Fortuner still uses an extra gear-lever which tends to get in the way. Thanks to independent rear suspension with dampers, the ride was forgiving and soft when I needed it most. On a badly rutted gravel road I hardly noticed the potholes when driving above 80 km/h. I even took my 4x2 Trailblazer onto two strictly 4x4 only routes and it passed with flying colours. The extra 40mm ground clearance over the Fortuner also made sure the front never touched any unwanted rocks. I for one, really fell in love with the Trailblazer’s looks. That unmistakable golden bow-tie and the spilt front grille adds to its appeal. The 18-inch rims are big for this type of vehicle, but they do complete the look. At the rear the LED-lights look fresh and the standard park assist saved me from nasty surprises more than once. Choosing between the strong newcomer or the trusted champion might be very difficult for some. I would like to make it easier, by highlighting a few aspects. The Trailblazer has more interior space, it does feature a much stronger engine and a better automatic gearbox. The 3rd row seating can actually be folded flat and adults can comfortably use them. If all of the above is still not enough to make an appointment for a test drive, then consider that it is also competitively priced. The 2.8 LTZ 4x2 retails for R423 500. The standard service plans are identical at 5 year/90 000 km, but the intervals are longer on the Chev at 15 000km.
