Peugeot 308 arrives in South Africa QUICKPIC
The 2014 European Car of the Year is finally available in South Africa. Peugeot SA this month launches the all-new 308 hatchback, heralding the advent of the marque’s most advanced hatchback to date. Designed around Peugeot’s newgeneration Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2), the new 308 combines compact, wieldy dimensions and a substantially reduced kerb mass with an advanced, high-efficiency drivetrain to deliver exceptional dynamics and frugal fuel consumption. The interior execution reflects the advanced nature of the 308, as well as close attention to design detail, high comfort levels and tactile quality. The cockpit design combines deeply recessed, highly visible instrument dials with a large, full-colour touchscreen display, while a multifunction steering wheel further benefits intuitive access to key functions and features. Mirroring a design trend first introduced by the 208 and 2008, the 308’s ergonomic layout combines a small-diameter steering wheel with an elevated instrument binnacle, allowing an unencumbered view of the road and the key instrumentation. Despite the fact that the new 308 is more compact than its predecessor, efficient packaging and intelligent design conspire to create a
roomy cabin with spacious accommodation for front and rear occupants. Smart finishes, including textured surfaces, metallic accents and high-gloss inserts, establish an upmarket ambience, adding to the new Peugeot 308’s feel-good character. Practicality remains a further 308 attraction, with a generous luggage compartment, and a 60/40-split rear bench seat that can be partly or completely folded flat to boost cargo space. A five-star Euro-NCAP rating underscores the new Peugeot hatchback’s exceptional safety standards, with a comprehensive array of active and passive safety features. The new Peugeot 308 is initially offered in two variants, both employing Peugeot’s latest, high-efficiency PureTech engine technology. The cutting-edge, three-cylinder powerplant incorporates high-pressure direct injection, four valves per cylinder, and high-pressure turbocharging. The result is a small-capacity engine with compact dimensions and low mass that emulates the power and torque of a much larger, more conventional and less efficient power plant, while achieving clear benefits as far as reduced exhaust emissions and lower fuel consumption are concerned. Starting off the range is the Peugeot 308 Active, which is fitted with the 1.2 PureTech e-THP 110 engine. It produces a maximum power output of 81 kW at 5 500 r/min, combined with a generous 205 Nm of torque, available from just 1 500 r/min. A

By comparison, the 1.2 PureTech e-THP 130 engine fitted to the 308 GT Line elevates those output levels even further. Maximum power increases to an impressive 96 kW at 5 500 r/min, while torque now peaks at 240 Nm, already on song from only 1 750 r/min. The GT Line model gets a six-speed manual gearbox with optimised ratios. The differences between the Active and GT Line models extend to exterior styling details and interior trim and equipment levels. For instance, the GT Line gains full LED headlights, a different grille, and twin, narrow-aperture tailpipes, as well as larger alloy wheels and more brightwork. While both models offer a compre-

hensive array of standard equipment, the GT Line gains an extended features list, together with enhanced trim levels. However, the 9,7-inch touchscreen display is standard on both variants. “The arrival of the new-generation Peugeot 308 in South Africa represents a quantum leap for the brand in the highly competitive C-segment hatchback market,” says Francis Harnie, managing director of Peugeot South Africa. “Its strong suite of attributes, including reduced mass, high efficiency, dynamic prowess and marked quality all combine to create a car that looks elegant and contemporary, and feels every inch the 21st Century hatchback. “ Harnie points out that the new 308’s excellence has already been

Each one offers a different Boxer® powerplant, but the same drivetrain: the latest version of Subaru’s Symmetrical All Wheel Drive™ system mated to the acclaimed Lineartronic™ CVT. Another common thread is the level of cabin sophistication, ambience, and roominess. Sleeker styling, a more assertive grille and bigger wheels convey the message on the outside. The Outback has achieved 5-star ratings for both Euro NCAP and ANCAP testing, and its body has been carefully resigned to place high tensile steel at critical points, further enhancing the crash structures. This has resulted in minimal increases in weight. The Lineartronic Constantly Variable Transmission has been further refined for smoother shifting and a more linear feel. Using the paddle shifters, drivers have the option of using six ‘steps’, the turbodiesel having an additional one, to take its torque characteristics into account. Luggage space is up from 490 to 512 litres and there’s a generous 1 801 litres of utility space when the split rear seat is folded. And getting to the luggage compartment couldn’t be easier thanks to a powered tailgate. Meeting the needs of the gadget generation has been high on the priority list, and there is a lidded pocket ahead of the shift lever, which contains 2 x USB, Aux and 12 Volt ports. Petrol-engined versions are equipped with 12-speaker Harmon Kardon audio. Voice control allows the driver to control audio, climate control and telephone systems through a single steering wheel control button. The piéce de résistance is a new 6.2-inch touch screen with an interface reminiscent of smartphones and tablets; which acts as a command centre for functions such as audio, telephony, and vehicle-related settings and systems. Pricing starts at R479 000 for the 2.5 litre version, which is powered by an uprated version of the 2.5-litre Boxer engine, now producing 129 kW and 235 Nm thanks to a number of internal and external changes. Fuel consumption has benefited hugely, with overall consumption plummeting to 7,7 litres per 100 km. This is followed by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel – the only compression-ignition Boxer engine in the world – and priced at R529 000. While peak power and torque remain at 110 kW and 350 Nm respectively, the torque peak starts lower down and continues further up the rev range. Consumption has improved to 6,3 litres per 100 km. The flagship of the range is the Outback 3.6R-S, with the smooth , 3.6-litre H6 engine under its aluminium bonnet. Power output of this lusty, free-revving powerplant is a heady 191 kW, with torque of 350 Nm. Despite these numbers, it requires just 9,9 litres per 100 km. With improvements in key areas, the latest Outback continues to evolve, meeting environmental requirements with increasingly clean-burning engines, low friction drivetrains, and exceptional safety standards.

It also boasts an array of new cutting-edge technologies that enable new and more practical solutions to everyday challenges. “When we set out to improve upon the Ford Ranger, we knew we had our work cut out for us: The current Ranger is one of the toughest, most capable trucks out there,” said Richard Tilley, vehicle line director, Ford Asia Pacific. “But thanks to our proud truck heritage and global expertise in the utility segment, we’ve made what was great even better, with a bold new look, improved efficiency and a new level of refinement.” The changes to the Ranger begin with an updated exterior design. A bold, more modern look lends Ranger a powerful presence
Maximizing the efficiency of its engines, the new Ford Ranger is available with Automatic Start/Stop Technology, which saves fuel by shutting off the engine when the vehicle is idling, such as at a traffic light, improving fuel economy by up to 3,5 percent PHOTO: QUICKPIC on the road, and immediately conveys a sense of capability. A more muscular hood flows into a strong new trapezoidal grille, while imposing projector headlamps make the truck instantly recognisable, with a bold, technical look. The Ford Ranger remains one of the most capable trucks in its class. With a class-leading ability to wade through water up to 800 mm deep, and with 230 mm of ground clearance, it is designed and engineered to handle the most extreme terrains with ease. Thanks to a 28-degree approach angle and
25-degree departure angle, drivers in the new Ranger can feel confident when taking on steep obstacles. A robust electronically controlled transfer case allows drivers in 4x4 models to shift on the fly from 4x2 to 4x4 high with a knob on the centre console. For low-speed torque or additional downhill braking, drivers can also engage low-range 4x4 gearing, while an electronic locking rear differential helps to improve traction in difficult conditions. These off-road strengths are matched by towing capability of up to 3 500 kg and exceptional pay-
load capacity. SYNC 2, the latest generation of Ford’s incar connectivity system, gives drivers smarter and safer ways to stay connected. Using natural voice commands, like “temperature 20 degrees”, “play AC/DC” or “I’m hungry”, the driver can control the car’s climate controls, entertainment system and navigation system more easily than ever before. An eight-inch touch screen places more controls at the driver’s fingertips, with colour-coded corners for easy menu navigation. For extra convenience, the new Ranger features a 240-volt power socket that can be used to power a laptop computer anywhere, from a work site to a family road trip. For maximum power and torque for heavyduty towing, Ford is offering the latest generation of its globally proven 3.2-litre Duratorq five-cylinder TDCi diesel engine. Upgrades, including an updated exhaust gas recirculation system, help to improve fuel efficiency by up to 18 percent, while still putting out 147 kW of power and 470 Nm of torque. Equipped with the latest generation of Ford’s 2.2-litre Duratorq four-cylinder TDCi diesel engine, the Ranger delivers significantly improved fuel efficiency and refinement while also providing the power Ranger customers demand. Depending on the market, Ford will offer a standard 2.2-litre engine, which generates an improved 118 kW of power and 385 Nm of torque, or a high-efficiency (96 kW) variant for up to 22 percent improvement in fuel economy. The new Ranger is also available with Ford’s dependable 2.5-litre Duratec petrol engine, providing 122 kW of power and 225 Nm of torque#.
